Introducing Yoko Inoue

Finding the perfect window treatment for your home is easy when you visit Show Me Blinds & Shutters in Kirkwood, a one-stop shop for blinds, shades, shutters, drapes and custom items. Professional design consultant Delayna Adams can help select from the store’s limitless combinations of color, texture, fabric and function while owner Robert Starr oversees the installation and in-home service. “We offer the best national brands but provide a local touch because we are independently owned and operated,” Starr said. The store opened in 1996 and Starr took ownership in 2006. He says the best parts of his work are seeing a homeowner’s excitement after their new window treatments are installed and getting calls from new customers who were referred by one of Show Me Blinds & Shutter’s satisfied clients. “We always shop around, but were referred to Show Me Blinds & Shutters through some friends who had also used their services. They

offered the best price out of all the companies who bid our project and, most importantly, their personal service cinched the deal. They treated us right every step of the way,” said Julie and David D. of St. Louis. That attentive contact has been an important part of growing the business, and Starr is proud of the feedback from their customers. They have a perfect score on Angie’s List and received the highest rating from the Better Business Bureau. “2010 has been a great year for us and we are excited about using new technology to keep improving the service to our clients,” Starr said. Show Me Blinds & Shutters is a gallery store for the Hunter Douglas brand and was only the second one built in the country. The Hunter Douglas product line features products with energy efficiency ratings that qualify for a $1,500 government tax credit. They are also offering summer sales on their sheers through Aug. 15.

You can tell a lot about a person by their favorite piece of jewelry. Some people love a modern item that shows a daring sense of fashion. Others are attached to an heirloom piece that reminds them of a cherished relative. Or maybe their heart skips a beat each time they look at the one-of-a-kind piece their spouse presented to them on a special occasion. Regardless of personal tastes, Lindwedel Jewelers in Webster Groves has the selection and quality to match buyers with the perfect piece. “Our customers become our friends. We’ve created a comfortable atmosphere in our store that allows them to relax and enjoy the experience of purchasing jewelry,” said Phil Lindwedel. Phil and his wife, Antoinette, opened the store in 2008 after he spent several years crafting award-winning pieces as a bench jeweler. That expertise combines with the staff’s attentive service to form relationships that turn first-time buyers into repeat customers. Lindwedel’s cases sparkle with top-quality stones, gleaming gold and silver, and high-fash-

ion items. But if a customer is looking for something truly unique, the Lindwedel team is always excited to design something just for them. “Jewelry buyers today are very savvy and know exactly what they want. We are committed to helping them select something that will last a lifetime,” said Phil. The Lindwedel’s service extends beyond their own inventory to repairing, polishing, reworking, or appraising pieces that a customer may already have. They also offer top dollar for gold jewelry that a customer has decided to part with. “Many of our customers are surprised by the value of the items they have sitting in their jewelry boxes at home. We are professional jewelers who are proud of the reputation we’ve built within the community, so you can feel confident that we will offer the best price,” said Phil. A sense of community is an important part of the Lindwedel’s business, and they are committed to supporting their friends and neighbors through volunteering and sponsoring events. “We value our community and enjoy being involved in its success,” said Phil.

Webster Groves Complete Auto Repair has been in business for nearly 30 years under the leadership of the Pfitzinger family. Originally located in Valley Park and owned by Jerry Pfitzinger, the business was purchased by son Scott in 1993 and relocated to Webster Groves in 1996. Today, Scott focuses on accommodating customer needs with help from his experienced staff. Service manager Joe Johnson, automotive technicians Tim Freese and Jim Upton, and office manager Jessica Vaccaro work as a team to make client satisfaction their top priority. “If our customers are happy, we are happy. It’s what keeps our business going. We get many new clients because of referrals,” Scott said. Over the years, the company has witnessed many changes in the industry ranging from advancements in electronics to hybrid cars. Specialized tools, updated facilities and training for technicians are crucial to keeping up with the evolving needs of the shop’s clients. The business prides itself on being able to

adjust its schedule to serve emergency automotive needs such as flat tires. Webster Groves Complete Auto Repair is also a Missouri state safety and emissions inspection station. The company has had to adjust to more than just the technology of cars. The modern importance of being environmentally friendly has prompted a decidedly green change in the way the business is run. A clean burning furnace that runs on used waste oil and transmission fluid has been installed to heat the shop. “Being ‘green’ isn’t just good for the environment; it also helps us save on our heating costs. We continue to look for additional ways to make our shop more ecologically friendly,” Scott said. A number of regular customers have recently expressed concerns regarding the expansion of the neighboring McDonald’s restaurant. Scott said the construction process and eventual expansion of McDonald’s over the next year will in no way interfere with business being conducted as usual. UPDATE: The McDonald’s expansion/construction project is on “hold” for now.

Edward F. Tate, D.D.S., is a third generation dentist who knew from a young age that caring for healthy, beautiful smiles was going to be his lifelong passion. He uses that knowledge every day at Kirkwood Family Dental, where the saying “No pain, your gain” guides their practice. “Time after time, patients of all ages compliment me on their painless dental experiences. Education and technology have made all the difference in the world with modern dentistry,” said Dr. Tate. Kirkwood Family Dental’s state-of-theart facilities include laser cavity detection, which decreases the need for anesthetic, and computerized treatment rooms that provide the ultimate in patient education and understanding of all dental procedures. Dr. Tate also has extensive experience with esthetics as well as function of partial and full dentures. “My patients are stunned by how beautiful their smiles can be and how perfectly their appliances can fit,” he said. ate’s New products include OraVerse, which dramatically reduces the time that

patients experience numbness after a procedure, and ClearCorrect invisible braces, which allow patients to improve their smile without enduring “metal mouth.” As the name of the business indicates, family is an important part of Tate’s practice. His wife, Rita, has been the administrator for 16 years. Their daughter, Victoria, is a junior at Kirkwood High School and is a part-time office receptionist in training. The Tates’ son, Austin, will be in seventh grade at Nipher Middle School. In addition, the couple has four adult children, three of whom have married within the last year! “My family resides in an outstanding community,” said Dr. Tate. “I have another office in Florissant, but we are proud to live in Kirkwood and have a thriving business here.” The practice is offering special pricing for Zoom! Teeth Whitening: $400 for one patient or save $50 when you refer a friend (through August 2010). For new patients, there is the Bleach Free for Life program. Pay $97 for custom trays and receive free bleach after one year as a patient.

“I started Seniors Home Care to provide a support system for older adults,” said Kit Whittington, R.N., founder of Seniors Home Care. “SHC allows individuals who want the benefits of assisted living, but do not want to move out of their home, stay in the comfort of their own homes and maintain their independence. The range of services is reassuring to client families who find it difficult to raise their own families while trying to be supportive caregivers to their elderly parents. Those services have been designed around the true needs of the older population, with companionship, medication reminders, transportation, shopping, light housekeeping, cooking, and personal care among the many services offered. How are a client’s needs determined? One of SHC’s registered nurses meets with each client personally conducting a detailed complimentary assessment. Their intimately itemized checklist is the basis for their overall impression of the client’s needs. The sum of data and, professional intuition, provides

the blueprint for meeting the client’s needs. Those needs are met by carefully screened, bonded, and insured Seniors Home Care employees, not contract hires. Each caregiver undergoes drug testing, a thorough background search and completes a training program designed by Whittington and administered by professional instructors. It includes some basic nursing skills and physical therapy applications. SHC offers its clients flexibility, with care ranging from a 30 minute QuickVisit™ to 24 hour care seven days a week. A number of services are also offered to those in a nursing home, recovering from an illness, or who are hospitalized. SHC is a member of the Better Business Bureau with an A+ rating, and a winner of the Better Business Bureau Torch Award in 2009. “My goal is for older adults to be able to live with dignity,” said Whittington. “I believe Seniors Home Care provides individuals just that, through the kindness and respect we show them.”

Best Home Furnishings Fills Void With First Factory Direct Store
Best Home Furnishings chose St. Louis to open its first factory direct furniture store in 2007. “When family-owned furniture stores, like Rest Assured Furniture, Debasio, Phillips, went out of business, we felt it necessary to fill the void with our first factory direct store,” said owner Carl Boyer. “We believe people are still interested in high-quality furniture at a low price.” Best Home Furnishings is the largest chair manufacturer in the world, producing 7,000 chairs every day. The furniture is manufactured 200 miles from St. Louis in Ferdinand, Ind. “Where else can one see over 200 chairs in one place, with over 700 fabric and leather options – all available usually within three weeks?” Boyer said of his store. “But, we are more than chairs. Best Home Furnishings features stationary sofas, sectionals, reclining sofas, glider rockers, accent chairs, sleepers, desk chairs and accessories,” Boyer said. He said his store stocks over 586 pieces for immediate pickup. Most of the staff were previously employed by Boyer with past experience averaging 12 years. Staff includes Manager Danielle Boyer, Mary DeMello. Chris Bohn, and Rebecca Steinberg (maternity leave). To determine quality of furniture, Boyer said to lift the cushions. If they’re heavy, the foam density is good. “Make sure the cushions are Dacron wrapped. But most importantly, turn it over. If there’s particle board on the frame, run! Run to Best Home Furnishings where solid wood is the norm,” Boyer said. “Our repeat business says it all,” he added.

Family has been an important part of Watson Pointe Dental for three generations. The practice began in 1911 by Dr. Vincent Grimaud, who was joined by his son Dr. James Grimaud in 1938. The third and current owner, Dr. Joseph Grimaud, began practicing 1985. Six relatives (plus three honorary family members) are currently employed at the office. The dental assistants at Watson Pointe enjoy a job sharing program that allows them to spend more time with their own families. This focus on life balance isn’t the only modern improvement at Watson Pointe Dental. Dr. Grimaud likes to make sure he stays on the cutting edge of technology. “We are excited to now offer the Spectra Cavity Detection System in our office. It uses fluorescence technology to help us find cavities early, especially in the deep grooves of the teeth. This allows for a more conservative treatment of tooth decay,” said Dr. Joe.

Focus Is On Family & Technology At Watson Pointe Dental

The office also offers single-visit, allporcelain restorations and crowns and an intraoral camera that helps show patients what is going on in their mouths. Before and after photos on Watson Pointe Dental’s website show the amazing results that the team can achieve in a short amount of time. The site also provides complimentary tips and helpful information on personal dental health. Check out the site at: www.mywatsonpointedental.com. Even though technology is an important feature of the office, the atmosphere remains decidedly family-focused. Dr. Grimaud’s mother, 91-year-old Joan, often joins the team for their daily lunch. Brother, sisters, and nieces all work together to maintain the success the family has upheld over the years. “I enjoy helping our patients understand the connection between oral health and general health. I also enjoy the attention to detail and precision that dentistry requires,” said Dr. Grimaud.

Computer St. Louis focuses on bringing a human touch to the digital world. The company has many long-term staff members who enjoy interacting one-onone with clients. “I have been using Computer St Louis for nearly 10 years for both business and personal use. There is nothing better than having a live, local support technician to assist you when you have a frustrating issue at hand. The Webster Groves and Kirkwood areas are known for their lovely, tree-lined streets. It is part of what gives these and the surrounding communities their special character. Ottiger Tree Service is committed to helping home and business owners maintain the health and beauty of their trees through careful maintenance. They are one of only five companies in Missouri to receive national accreditation from the Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA). They have adopted TCIA’s model safety program and enhance their employee training through the association’s continuing education program. “Our mission is to maintain tree health, ensure customer safety and satisfaction, and raise the standards of the arboriculture industry,” said OJ Ottiger, owner of the company. OJ had been working with trees since the early 1970s but didn’t officially start his business until 1998, when his accountant pointed out that this “side job” was

generating more income than his full-time job of driving a concrete truck. He and son, Nick, are now certified arborists. Nick is the company’s main climber and foreman, daughter-in-law Mindy serves as office manager, and grandsons Sam and Will are “saplings in training.” “OJ’s hard work, dedication to quality, and willingness to share knowledge have earned him the respect of his peers and industry professionals. We call him The Tree Whisperer!” said Mindy. The Ottigers take a naturalistic approach to their work, pruning with the tree’s natural shape in mind so the beauty of each species can shine on its own. If a tree must be removed, the staff can safely take it down. “We strive to leave every job site better than we found it. So many customers comment on our ‘tread lightly and clean brightly’ policy. Except for the tree and/or branches being removed, many times you wouldn’t even know we had been there,” said OJ.

60 Years of Keeping Customers Comfortable Harster Heating & Air Conditioning
Harster Heating & Air Conditioning Co. has grown from a one-man shop in 1950 to a company with 25 employees today. Emil F Harster started the business after he learned the sheetmetal trade in the Navy during World War II. In 1987, his son David Harster and his wife Marilyn bought the business. The company, which services and installs residential and commercial heating and air conditioning equipment, has been in the same location since 1952 at 9900 Gravois Road in Affton. “We service all makes, but install equipment manufactured by American Standard, Heil, Bryant, Amana and Lennox,” said David Harster. “In our industry many technicians and installers get laid off in the winter, but we pride ourselves in working our people all year long,” said Harster. “This results in very low employee turnover so many of our employees have been with us for 10 years or longer.” That includes Service Manager Rick Ebert who has been with Harster since 1974 and General Manager Bob Burtelow who joined Harster in 1999. Harster said he derives the most satisfaction from his business by providing good service that is lacking in so many businesses today. “We try to match our schedule with the customers’ so they don’t sit home all day waiting for the repairmen,” he said. “I like being one of the top companies on Angie’s List which proves that we do care about how our customers are treated.” Customer review cards often state that they like the professional way employees treat them from booties the installers put over their shoes, to the cleanup when they’re finished. “The actual installations are put in with quality in mind and that makes the whole heating and cooling system more efficient,” Harster said. He also noted that customers like the fact that real people answer the phones.

Solid Surface Resources is a custom fabricator of natural stone, engineered stone and “green surface” counter tops, as well as distributor of environmentally friendly flooring options including cork, rubber, bamboo and recycled vinyl. The company was acquired in 2007 by Bill Behan, president of Solid Surface Resources, and his wife, Rhema Behan, design sales consultant. Since then they have worked hard to provide professional customer service as well as environmentally friendly surface products. “We strive to employ only ‘A’ players; ones who understand the meaning of professionalism and commitment to our customers,” Bill said. Clients of Solid Surface Resources said they were impressed with the quality of customer service. “Solid Surface Resources came out to review the project promptly after my call.” Christine, a client from Town and Country, said. “I got three

bids for this service and found Solid Surfaces to be very competitive plus they had the best turnaround time. Very professional, timely and pleasant. I will certainly use them again.” Solid Surface Resources is a full solution provider for home and business. Their clients include commercial real estate developers, architectural mill-work shops, custom home builders and residential homeowners. Bill and Rhema insist being “green” does not have to be boring. Solid Surface Resources is committed to building functional and yet visually pleasing counter tops and flooring. “I get the most satisfaction helping clients make beautiful selections for their home,” Bill said. “While it may seem that counter tops serve just one function, the form, design and style are an expression of the owner. Natural stone is like jewelry for your home.” For more information visit www.solidsurfaceresources.com.

The Tin Rabbit, located at 2733 Highway T in Labadie, Mo., offers American-crafted home furnishings and American folk art. The shop is owned by Barbara and David Kahn. “My love for antiques and primitive folk art led me to discover newly-made furniture and one-of-a-kind pieces of folk art that replicated antique pieces that I could not afford,” Barbara said. By educating people on how important it is to support artists from across the United States, customers come to the shop looking for that special hand-crafted piece to add to their collections. At The Tin Rabbit, purchasing a special piece of hand-made furniture or special light fixtures are not about just filling spaces — but true home treasures. “Everything in the store, with the exceptions of some florals and a few textiles, are American crafted. We have the works of over 150 American artists, and most of the pieces are one of a kind. The Tin Rabbit is a family affair.

“The people who work here, Julie and Laurie, along with my husband, appreciate and truly understand the uniqueness of what I do and are passionate about my shop,” Barbara said. “No matter whether a customer purchases a hand-made tea towel or a beautiful masterpiece 18th Century reproduction piece of furniture, the fact that these were chosen for their home and they love what they have selected makes me truly happy.” Customers love the 1820 restored farmhouse that is the perfect setting for The Tin Rabbit. They also love that owners are regularly finding new, beautiful, unique pieces to fill the ever-changing shop. “I love shopping at the Tin Rabbit. It never fails that I find a unique treasure to add to one of my collections,” said Pat Knoche of Town and Country. “Everyone is so helpful and friendly. The Coffee House is fabulous.” The adjoining Coffee House is co-owned by Dave and Barbara’s son, Josh Kahn.

With three locations, Reineke Decorating Centers Inc. strives to give its customers the best products and advice to get their projects finished right! Reineke sells color, specializing in decorating techniques and selling paint, wallcovering and related items. The three centers are located at 12017 Manchester Road, Des Peres; 8121 Manchester Road, Brentwood; and 3015 Lemay Ferry Road, Mehlville. Carl D. Reineke acquired a family tradition in the paint business when he bought out an existing paint store in 1976 where the Des Peres store is located. “With the support of my parents, Russell and Rita Reineke, I went out on my own,” he said. He said the staff, most of whom have been with him for years, are considered part of the family. Over the years products have changed and customers are much more knowledgeable about the products and applications. “One thing that has remained the same is our ability to bring the most

innovative product selection to St. Louis customers,” said Reineke. He noted that his company was the first to have a color computer for matching. He also offers new trends in wallpaper and the latest color trends – with large color samples to take home. Stores carry Benjamin Moore paints for any problem a customer may have and stores also have environmentally-friendly paint. As another service, Reineke can provide customers with referrals for reliable contractors for painting, wallpaper hanging or faux finishing. Reineke finds it very satisfying helping customers determine the best color for their particular jobs. Customers like Reineke’s one-stop shopping for painting/faux finishing and accessories. “Painters tell us they make only one stop – at Reineke’s – to get everything needed – including that important cup of coffee, and help carrying the paint to the car,” Reineke said.

When was the last time you had your windows washed or your gutters cleaned? Why not let the professionals at M&P Window Washing and Gutter Cleaning, Inc. get on that ladder for you? Owners Mark Thompson and Paul Cernich have been partners in their residential window washing and gutter cleaning business since 1983. They first met when both worked at a Denny’s restaurant as teenagers, and have became lifelong friends. When they first started their business, Rose Thompson, Mark’s mother, was invaluable, answering calls and doing payroll and bookkeeping. She did such a good job, in fact, that she is still their number one employee. Mark has lived on the same street in Webster Groves his entire life. He is married to Terri, and together they have three children: Brody, Trevor and Nina. Paul lives in Fenton with his wife Susan, and they are the parents of Rachel, Josh, Ryan and Nicole. Both Mark and Paul are proud of the relationships they’ve built with their regular customers.

“We appreciate our clients who refer other clients… that is the best compliment ever.” “Over the years, we’ve had the opportunity to see families grow,” said Paul. “Now we clean windows and gutters for our clients’ sons and daughters. “With only the two of us on the job site, customers don’t have to worry about having several different people in and out of their home,” he added. “Most of our clients don’t even have to be home for us to do our job.” M&P Window Washing is a 2007, 2008 and 2009 Angie’s List Super Service Award winner. This recognition is based on achieving and maintaining a Superior service rating on Angie’s List throughout 2007, 2008 and 2009. The company is fully insured, and offers reasonable rates and free estimates. “We do business with many different types of people, from professionals in the NFL, to selfemployed individuals like ourselves,” said Mark. “They all have the same thing in common – their time and everything in their home is valuable to them.”

Bachmann Construction: Providing Expert Construction To Enhance Your Life
“Our customers are like family,” said Don Bachmann, with a twinkle in his eye. “We pride ourselves on doing high quality work and in taking care of our clients. It’s no surprise that we develop long-lasting friendships. We are all about helping people find the ‘fine living’ in their home.” For over 30 years, Bachmann Construction has had a passion for improving people’s lives by creating great living spaces. Don and Sue Bachmann say their success is due to the way their work makes customers feel, not just when the job is finished, but day after day and year after year. Almost all of their work comes from previous clients or referrals, a sign that they give customers a high level of satisfaction. “Homeowners feel something special when they walk into their new kitchen or their new great room or bathroom that we have created together,” said Don. “We believe that the design and the quality of every detail should make them smile.” When Don and Sue started, they understood the importance of quality construction that would last. A generation later, they are still seeing much of their original handiwork as old friends invite them back for new work. “Our clients know that we provide quality service at a fair price,” said Sue. “They trust our employees and our subcontractors. Because we strive hard to please, we want to make sure that when someone calls us 10 or 20 years from now they are still appreciating the quality work we did back then. We are currently renovating a master bath and screening a porch for client friends whose first project with us was a room addition 17 years ago! That’s the kind of longterm relationships you build when you do your best work.” Sue emphasized the importance of their “full service” approach to customer service. “When we talk about ‘fine living,’ we don’t just mean large construction projects. We have many clients who call us to handle all kinds of home maintenance and repair issues. They’re happy to have just one company to call and they know we’ll get the appropriate resources to take care of the problem.”

It is a team effort at Streib Electric, where everyone from office staff to the guy in the bucket truck works hard to earn the right to be their customers’ “go to” company for electrical needs. “This business has been a dream of mine since I got into the industry 15 years ago. I went out on my own in 2004 with just myself and one truck and, since that time, have been able to expand to hire a group of talented people who are passionate about what they do,” said company president Tom Streib. Streib believes that completing projects cleanly and with attention to detail is the key to a job well done. He said that the parts of the project that a client doesn’t see are just as important as what they do see. “Our customers appreciate our knowledge and our attitude. We always stay positive while performing our work,” said Streib. The company provides a full list of services to meet the modern needs

Our qualified technicians will come to your home, walk through, and point out any code violations or safety hazards. We can assess the situation and help you prioritize and repair as needed,” Streib said. Streib Electric stresses quality and safety among its team members and invests in their continuing education. They are proud to have the top apprentice with the Independent Electrical Contractors of Greater St. Louis on their staff and will be cheering him on as he competes at a national competition in October 2010.

Family-Owned Kirkwood Plumbing Celebrates Its Silver Anniversary
The year 2010 has special meaning for the owners of Kirkwood Plumbing, as Paul and Debbie Schaefer commemorate the silver anniversaries of both the business and their wedding. The familyowned Kirkwood Plumbing has been proudly serving Webster-Kirkwood Times readers since 1985, which is the same year Paul and Debbie were married. They recently celebrated the occasion with friends, family, and their two children, Renee and Brad. Renee and Brad are both involved in carrying on the family business: he is learning the techniques of the trade out in the field while she works in the office assisting Debbie, Diane, and Donna - Paul’s three “angels.” Renee is an Ursuline graduate and Brad is a graduate of Kirkwood High School. Paul and Debbie started Kirkwood Plumbing out of a roll top desk at their Kirkwood home. Today, the Schaefer family and the rest of the Kirkwood Plumbing staff continue to provide services to the community from their new building located at 248 Grand Ave. in Kirkwood. “Without the continued support of our customers and their great referrals, we would not be celebrating Kirkwood Plumbing’s 25th year in business,” said Paul. Schaefer is a member of the Kirkwood-Des Peres Area Chamber of Commerce, Kirkwood Rotary Club, and Kirkwood Optimist Club, as well as a board member of the Missouri Association of Plumbing Contractors. Paul and Debbie have also been parishioners of St. Gerard Majella for 26 years. “Our continuous goal is providing our customers with licensed staff who ensure quality work and professional integrity. Debbie and I are extremely proud of our team” Paul said. Schaefer challenges his employees to attend continuing education courses so they can offer the latest advancements in the plumbing industry. The company provides services ranging from a simple water closet repair to a complete remodel, including sewer laterals repairs. Paul and Debbie Schaefer are including the entire community in their Silver Celebration, offering $25 off any service over $250 through Aug. 31, 2010. Kirkwood Plumbing and the Schaefers thank you and all of their loyal customers for 25 years of continued support!

Martha’s Hands provides caring assistance with a client’s daily activities, allowing them to maintain their independence in their home. Their nursing supervisor works with the client and their family to customize a care plan just for them. Typical services include bathing and dressing assistance; meal preparation/clean-up; medication set-up and reminders; light housekeeping; laundry; errand running; and companionship. Eileen and John Hedrick founded Martha’s Hands with a mission that Eileen was taught over 30 years ago. While a nursing student, Eileen was taught compassionate care by the Sisters of Mercy, emphasizing total wellness. Eileen applied this mission in her nursing career. John built his own success, having run a successful engineering company since 1986. With Eileen’s focus on high quality standards and John’s ability to organize and run a company, Martha’s Hands started in their basement in 1997. Known for its quality service, Martha’s Hands has grown to become one of the premiere private-

duty home health agencies in St. Louis. They are regularly looking for compassionate individuals willing to serve the needs of the elderly. Martha’s Hands provides training and matches a caregiver’s skills with the client’s needs. Their nurse supervisor introduces the new caregiver to the client, and reviews the care plan to make everyone feel comfortable. Martha’s Hands now offers basic dental services in the client’s home. These Mobile Dentistry Services, performed by Dr. Dennis McCaffrey, provide people dental services without leaving the comfort of their own home. Martha’s Hands maintains membership in the National Private Duty Association, Missouri Alliance for Home Care, Social Workers in Long Term Care and the Kirkwood Chamber. While actual family members have joined the company, the Hedricks consider all of their employees members of their family, working to continue Eileen’s original mission of “Love through Service.”

St. Louis County Council

2 Democrats Face Off In 5th District Primary
Republican Randy Jotte running unopposed on Aug. 3 ballot
by Fran Mannino
Two Democrats and one Republican are vying for the St. Louis County Council 5th District seat being vacated by Barbara Fraser, D-University City. Fraser is running for the state senate 24th District seat. On the Aug. 3 primary ballot are Democrats Pat Dolan and Terri Williams, and Republican Randy Jotte. The 5th District takes in all, or parts of, Affton, Brentwood, Clayton, Crestwood, Glendale, Grantwood Village, Kirkwood, Ladue, Mackenzie, Maplewood, Marlborough, Oakland, Olivette, Richmond Heights, Rock Hill, Shrewsbury, University City, Warson Woods and Webster Groves. Democratic Primary Pat Dolan, 1259 Boland Place in Richmond Heights, is a former Richmond Heights city councilman (1992-2000). He works as a superintendent with United Fire Protection of St. Louis, and is president of Sprinkler Fitters Local 268. Dolan is currently the secretary/treasurer of the St. Louis Labor Club. He is 55 years old. Dolan is a lifelong resident of St. Louis County and a 1973 graduate of Christian Brothers College Pat Dolan High School (CBC). He and his wife, Jean, have two sons, Patrick and Christopher. Dolan said he would make job growth in the county a top priority, and that he would work with current council members to bring more businesses and better jobs to the region. “We need to basically create some job growth, maybe along the lines of green buildings, LEED buildings – even the current county buildings need to be brought up to date,” said Dolan. “That would create all types of jobs and address environmental sustainability issues. It would create work and improve quality of life for the county.” He said he would also work for more transparency in county government. “People trust government more when they have full disclosure of where our tax money is being spent,” he said. “I’m basically in favor of a taxpayer bill of rights and more accountability for county government.” Dolan said when he was a city council member in Richmond Heights he was part of an effort to establish a 911 center shared by five municipalities. Keeping the lines of communication open throughout the 5th District is a priority, he said. “I’ve talked to almost every mayor and gone to almost every city’s council meetings to explain to them that I’d have an open door policy,” said Dolan. “I’d like to hold town hall meetings with each municipality – individually or together – and maybe a quarterly meeting with all the mayors of the 19 municipalities, and go over whatever concerns they might have. Having been on the municipal level, I understand they deserve the time of their county councilperson to respond to their needs.” Dolan said he has the official support of many St. Louis County officials, including current council members Michael O’Mara, Hazel Erby, Kathleen Burkett and Steven Stenger; St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley; and St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Robert McCulloch.

celebrating 29 years in business • thank you

Thirty years ago this summer, life changed for Rick and Mary Jane Kuhn. Rick’s mother, Mary Louise Kuhn, died after a brief illness. One month later, Mary Jane’s dad, George Moxley, passed away. “It was a rough time. We also had a sixmonth-old baby girl,” said Rick. Rick had been remodeling and rehabbing homes with his father, John. After his mother’s death, “Pop” decided to hang up his tool belt and send Rick out on his own. Rick became a one-man show and worked hard to grow his business. He incorporated just two years later and, as the saying goes, the rest is history. It’s a history that runs deep: Rick is the fifth generation of his family to be in the building business. He recently completed courses from the Home Builders Association and is now a Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS). Mary Jane said she is proud of Rick and all that he has accomplished. “Growing from a oneperson shop to an awardwinning contractor is a pretty great feat,” she said.

Kuhn Construction Of Kirkwood Celebrates 30th Anniversary

She is also proud of how much he gives to the community. “We are currently building a playhouse that will be auctioned off to raise funds for Court Appointed Special Advocates. You can see photos on our blog!” she said. The Kuhns have built their business by creating strong relationships with their clients, who become friends and repeat customers along the way. This great reputation has been important to growing the business through word-of-mouth. “A great example of the kind of relationships we have with our customers is a kitchen we just remodeled. We actually worked with the same client in the same kitchen twenty years ago,” Rick said. Kuhn Construction specializes in general home repairs and remodeling, high-end interiors, room additions, kitchens, and bathrooms.
