Laying the foundation
As one of the many educational opportunities that Missouri StateWest Plains offers, the honors program is expressly designed for the student-scholar who enjoys active learning. Interdisciplinary in nature and in focus, the honors program strives to foster an educational experience that lays a foundational understanding of the world’s most influential ideas, stimulates creative and critical thinking, and cultivates the growth of a learning community on and off campus and in and out of the program itself.

Why Honors?
• • • • Our program fosters a learning environment of interactive and collaborative learning, where your fellow students are just as curious and serious as you are. Our program lays an intellectual foundation that will enable you to pursue whatever subject area you choose with excellence. Our method is to make you think outside of the box. We stress critical and creative thinking in our joint adventure to pursue truth. Our program ‘dovetails’ easily into the Associate of Arts in General Studies degree (as well as most of Missouri State-West Plains’ other associate degree programs), which allows you to prepare for the career of your choice while also completing the specialization in honors. Our graduates go on to complete their bachelor’s degrees at transfer institutions around the country. And, many go on to graduate and professional schools in areas such as law, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, English, teaching, theology and religious studies, and the varying areas of business.

Honors grads excel beyond the campus
Kelly Johnson - I loved the honors classes. They were challenging but mentally stimulating at the same time. It was nice to be around people in college who enjoyed thinking more broadly. Rick Taylor - Honors helped me go from the quiet person I was in high school to a much more outgoing, more well-read and intelligent person, one able to make decisions for myself instead of just letting my decisions be made for me. John Turner - As a non-traditional student, it has allowed me to share my life experiences with the class through discussion, and I have learned new ideas from the younger students. Jared Cates - For me honors was a way for a student to experience the courage to ‘step outside of the box’ to discover what is truly inside of it. Jeremy Alsup - Now at 25, there has not been a single year of my adult life during which I have not attended school or a university. To this day, I am still most impacted by the seeds of academic and intellectual insight which were planted and watered through the honors program. Alex Pinnon - Honors was an experience that I have not been able to replicate in the entire four years of college I have taken. It changed my outlook on education, love and freedom of thought. Almost every other day I am seriously using quotes or ideas from the works that we read in honors class. Joining honors was the wisest decision I made while attending college.

Honors abroad
A unique and inviting option within the Darr Honors Program is the discovery of life outside our immediate area, including the exploration of new cultures and ideas around the globe. The Honors Abroad Program continues to attract participants who want a taste of international travel in a very safe and planned environment. In the past five years, the program has seen dozens of students enjoy trips to Ireland, Greece, Italy, France, Scotland, Spain, Britain and China.

Transferability
Students who graduate with the honors specialization are automatically eligible for admission into the honors program at Missouri State-Springfield. The AA degree also transfers to most other fouryear colleges and universities.

To apply
To enter the program, newly admitted students must have an ACT score of 25 or higher, although those who have an ACT score less than 25 can apply to enter the program following an interview with the program director. To remain in the program, students must maintain a 3.5 GPA in all classes and earn a grade of “A” or “B” in all honors program or honors component courses.
