Parkinson’s Disease and
Sun Exposure
Caring Community
Summer Ice Cream Socials

Dear Friends of Hope Parkinson Program
“Until there is a cure, there is a community.”
Many of our participants have chosen to live by this powerful phrase - believing that
those who live with Parkinson’s disease are stronger together. All of us at Hope believe
this too.
Our program includes nearly 2,000 vibrant and passionate people living with PD and
their care partners too. Within this close-knit community, participants find empathy,
compassion, motivation, and friendship. This past season, movement classes, support
groups and inspiring events brought members together to share successes and learn
from experiences.
More than 150 people gathered at Lakes Park to raise awareness for our PD Community
at the Walk 4 Hope. Other participants enjoyed a beloved Parkinson Program tradition:
the annual Sunset Cruise. Whether at a large event or a small gathering – we are simply
better together.
Spend the summer among friends. Enjoy a new class, join a support group and stop by
one of our Ice Cream Socials to have some fun!
Warm regards,

Samira K. Beckwith

Parkinson’s Disease and Sun Exposure
Dr. Amanda Avila

As the season winds to a close
and summer’s heat, sun and
rain is once again upon us,
I’d like to take a moment to
discuss the risks people with
Parkinson’s disease face with
added sun exposure.
As we already know, PD is a disease of the whole body.
Not only does it affect movements, balance and the GI
tract, but it can also affect the skin. In fact, people with
PD have almost twice the risk of developing skin cancers
including melanoma, the most serious type. Some
scientists even speculate that both PD and melanoma
share a common genetic link – that it is actually a lack
of natural pigmentation that predisposes people to both
skin cancer and Parkinson’s disease. Individuals with PD
are also more susceptible to other skin diseases such as
2

actinic keratosis and seborrheic dermatitis, both of which
cause dry, flaky and sometimes itchy skin.
Good skin care and regular visits to the dermatologist
can go a long way in protecting against and treating these
diseases. Every person with Parkinson’s disease should
see a dermatologist for an annual screening. In the
interim, sunscreen should be used daily and reapplied
frequently, especially while spending time outside. This
is especially important in South Florida, where our
exposure to the sun is so great. Be safe, stay cool and
cover up!

A Summer Tradition:

Hope PD Program Ice Cream Socials
Create your own ice cream sundae – complete with all the toppings
– while enjoying fun and fellowship with your friends. Immediately
following the ice cream social, you are invited to watch “Capturing
Grace,” a 50-minute documentary from filmmaker Dave Iverson,
who also directed a film about Parkinson’s for the PBS Frontline
series called “My Father, My Brother and Me.” RSVP is required.
See calendars for details.

Friday, July 15 at 1 p.m.

Friday, Aug. 12 at 1 p.m.

Friday, Sept. 16 at 1 p.m.

27200 Imperial Parkway,
Bonita Springs

Capturing Grace is a story about two realms. One is occupied by some of the most
acclaimed modern dancers in the world. The other is inhabited by a group of people
with Parkinson’s disease. This film is about what happens when those worlds intersect.
For me, it’s also a personal story. I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s eight years ago, the
third member of my family to receive that news.
— Dave Iverson

Ask a PD Expert: The “Milk Effect”
Kathrynne Holden, MS, RD

Do you use levodopa? If so, have you noticed that when
you drink milk, the medication doesn’t work as well?
Not everyone is sensitive to the protein in cow’s and
goat’s milk, but for those who are, a glass of milk in the
morning can block their levodopa for the rest of the
day. This is because the milk contains an unusually high
amount of the five neutral amino acids that compete
with levodopa for absorption from the small intestine.
Milk has an even higher ratio of these amino acids than
meat, poultry, or fish.
Almond, soy and rice milk alternatives don’t contain
this high ratio of aminos, so they can be safely
substituted. Also, some people find that cheese and
Greek yogurt do not produce as severe an effect; this is

because some of the whey is drawn off in production,
taking with it a large amount of the competing amino
acids.
Do be certain that you are getting enough protein daily
– about one-half gram of protein per pound of body
weight per day. Fatty fish, meat, poultry, cooked dried
beans, nuts and seeds are all good sources of protein.

Parkinson Foundation Forum

with Parkinson’s Disease,” and “Cook Well, Stay Well with
Parkinson’s Disease.”

To decrease tremors that make eating a challenge,
try using a 2.5-pound cuff weight on your
wrist while you are eating. Cuff weights can be
purchased at retail stores for approximately $5.
Using weighted utensils may also make it easier
to reach the mouth. A variety of styles, in both
plastic and stainless steel, can be purchased
online from www.Amazon.com or
www.SammonsPreston.com starting around $12.
