How do you know what makes you happy?

Say y ou eat a casserole that’s so blended y ou can’t tell what the ingredients are, and
lov e it. Then someone tells y ou that the casserole had some spinach-and incidentally ,
this is the first time y ou’v e had spinach, ev er. Do y ou like spinach?
You can’t immediately tell, and the same is true of a lot of things in y our ev ery day life,
particularly when it comes to influences like y our job or where y ou liv e. Day to day
influences-weather, y our health, hormones, or hav ing a fight with y our girlfriend-
ty pically hav e a much bigger effect on y our mood at the moment than any thing long
term. How do y ou isolate the effects of any indiv idual source of emotion in y our life?
Two y ears ago I was absolutely certain that I would want to go to grad school for a PhD
in Math. Today I’m looking for a job in Finance, after realizing that what I liked about
Math wasn’t what I would be doing in grad school.
So how did I choose what to do? Rather than try to gauge emotion, I look at energy . It’s
easy to track what thoughts keep me awake and inspire me to action, v s. things that fill
me with dread and make me exhausted. I lov e solv ing problems. I lov e reading lots of
theory and seeing how it produces short, clev er solutions to v ery general problems with

broad-ranging applications-that’s what I enjoy ed in Math. That’s what a lot of Math
education is like. But most research is about v ery specific problems that may or may not
hav e applications, and the number of people who read a giv en paper is v ery small.
When I thought about it, it was clear that I get most excited by projects with far-
reaching and measurable consequences. But the thought of doing work that almost no
one reads exhausts me.
Similarly , being around my SO makes me excited and more alert. My friends noticed
this before I ev en realized I had a crush on her.
Measuring energy is a major consideration y ou can use to decide where to work, liv e,
and y our general lifesty le. It’s a quick way to measure whether something makes y ou
happier. How do y ou measure y our happiness? What are some other indicators y ou can
use?

Why write this? It makes me realize that there are a lot of causes I would be happy
working for. On the other hand, none of them dominate. There are some I like more
than others, but on the whole, ultra-long term goals like these aren’t good motiv ation
for me. Kind of sad, but good to know.
So what is good motiv ation for me? Well, shorter term goals, day -to-day challenges, and
the skills I’ll learn. More on that later.
