How to become a good student
1. Participate in the academic and social activities
Each year, the student advisors plan student orientation with academic and socia
l content. By participating in the activities you automatically get to know your
fellow students and the university. When you have a connection with the other s
tudents and spend time at the university for example in study groups outside clas
s you have a better opportunity of getting a good start and a sense of belonging
at the university.
2. Plan the upcoming term
Read the course descriptions, the teachers course plans, the curricula, the acade
mic regulations and the ministerial orders on examinations thoroughly and make a
detailed schedule.
3. Get an overview of the people who can help and ask them!
Student advisors, fellow students, counsellors, teachers and the staff in the st
udent administration are all ready to help you. Dont hesitate to ask any type of
question. Also remember to communicate with other students who might struggle wi
th the same study-related issues as you. This dialogue is important for you to g
et information on, for instance, the teaching level and academic challenges of t
he courses you are following.
4. Take it easy
Dont expect to be able to see the big picture from the beginning. Some feeling of
chaos is natural at first, and things normally fall into place after a couple o
f years of studies.
5. Allow your studies to take up a lot of your time
The first period of time at the university typically consists of hard work with
many papers, classes and books to be read. Hang in there and do the best you can
. In time, it gets easier to juggle several courses at the same time.
6. Use your mental baggage
Remember that you never start at the bottom. You will always carry some relevant
academic knowledge from your life or from your qualifying examinations in your
previous studies which you can actively draw on when you follow new courses and
read new texts.
7. Stay aware of your physical study environment
The physical environment is really important for your ability to concentrate. Ma
ybe you dont do your best work at home but rather in the library or study hall.
8. Consider what you want to do with your education
You have the opportunity to participate in annual student fairs and career days.
This might help to get an overview of the different choices you need to make du
ring your studies, for example what masters degree programme you want to apply fo
r.
9. Check your AU e-mail for important info
At the beginning of your studies at Aarhus University you will be assigned a stu
dent e-mail address. You can have the AU-mail forward all messages to another e-
mail address. Its important that you check the messages from AU, since you will r
eceive essential information on registration deadlines, events etc. It is your o
wn responsibility to stay up to date.
10. Give your new study programme a fair chance
Having an interest for a course often depends on knowing the content, and a cour
se that seems dull from the outside might turn out to be very interesting when y
ou apply yourself. This means that you shouldnt make any hasty decisions about ch
anging study programmes or dropping out of the university before talking to your
student counsellor, fellow students, friends and family. If you finally decide
to quit your studies, you will know that the decision is carefully thought throu
gh.
