Students with special needs can sometimes be verbally or physically abusive and the job can be emotionally draining. How to work as a special needs teacher and teacher’s aide
Students with autism, mental or physical disabilities, learning difficulties or mental illnesses may all be considered to have special needs, if these conditions make schooling difficult. All children have a right to access an appropriate education that meets their needs and helps them reach their potential, whatever that may be. For some students this will mean attending a mainstream primary and secondary school, while others will flourish in a specialist environment. Special needs teachers and teacher’s aides work with students with special needs to assess their strengths and limitations, and to help them grow and learn. What do special needs teacher’s do? Special needs teachers are trained to assess the strengths and needs of each of their students, and then design and implement an educational program to help them reach their potential. They may work in mainstream schools, but will more often find employment in specialist schools. The spectrum of what constitutes special needs is very broad, so a special needs teacher must be adaptable. Some high functioning students with special needs may just need a bit of additional assistance with accessing the mainstream curriculum, while for others an education will centre on building life skills and a degree of independence. Special needs teachers are also responsible for assessing student progress, report writing and liaising with parents, guardians and other teachers about each student’s achievements. Special needs teaching is a highly skilled job, and like all teaching professions, a relevant four year university degree is required for registration. Some schools and other institutions may also require their teachers to have specific skills that will assist students – for example, a teacher at a school for students with hearing impairments may need to be proficient in sign language. What do teacher’s aides do? Teacher’s aides work with teachers to ensure all students are able to succeed at school. They may sit with students who are struggling and help them, or work with small groups of students who are experiencing similar difficulties. They also assist teachers with administrative duties and supervision of students. Teacher’s aides are not registered teachers, and therefore they do not need to have a university degree. TAFE courses are available for aspiring teacher’s aides.
