How to Build Bed Frame into a Wall Building a bed into a wall frame can be the ideal solution if you want to save money on construction, and already have an idea for a permanent bedroom layout. Using your walls as its structural support, a built-in bed offers a unique look with added strength. Relatively easy to build and requiring few resources, a built-in bed is a great project for a first-time woodworker. Saw 2-by-6-inch lumber into pieces enough to build a frame to your desired size. For a twin, the bed should be at least 39 inches by 75 inches; a full should be at least 54 inches by 75 inches; a queen should be at least 60 inches by 80 inches; and a king should be at least 76 inches by 80 inches. Regardless of length and width, the height of the bed can be whatever you want. Cut 2-by-2-inch lumber into two slat support rails that measure the inside length of the bed. Divide 2-by-4-inch lumber boards into at least four rails that measure the inside width of the bed, for the slats. Use a stud-finder and mark the location of the wall studs along the wall or walls where you want to attach the bed. Assemble the bed frame by butting the first side rail and head rail perpendicular placing 3-inch countersunk screws through the side rail and into the head rail. Repeat with each corner. Screw the bed frame into the wall studs using 3-inch countersunk screws, supporting it on the unattached corner with a leg cut to the desired height of the bed. Secure it to the bottom of the frame using wood glue and a flat bracket. Fix the slat support rails into the frame of the bed, screwing them into the side rails using 3-inch countersunk screws. Lay the slats across the rails. You’ll Need: Measuring tape Saw 2-by-6-inch lumber 2-by-2-inch lumber 2-by-4-inch lumber Stud finder Pencil 3-inch countersunk screws Screwdriver Wood glue
