How to measure a height of standing tree?
Clinometer:
A clinometer is used to measure angles from ground level (base) to top of the tree. This method
is used by forester to measure the height of standing tree.
A
E
Ø
B
AB- height of the tree
BC- Distance between tree and observer
CD- Height of the observer
Ø- Angle made by clinometer to the top of the tree
We have,
tanØ = AE/DE
or, AE= tanØ *DE
Actual height of tree= AE+BE

How to measure a biomass of the standing tree?
Above ground biomass (AGB) is all the plant material above the ground in forest. That includes
live trees, dead trees, leaves and shurbs.
AGB, m= aDb
where, m= overedry wight biomass of tree
a and b are parameters. The parameters a and b are different for every species
AGTB= 0.509*ᵟD2H
where, D= dbh (cm)
Aboveground biomass density (t/ha)= VOB*WD*BEF
Where, VOB= measured volume
WD= volume weighted average wood density
BEF= biomass expansion factor
Wood density:
Wood density is defined as the over drying mass per unit green volume (either tons/m3 or
grams/m3)
WD= 0.0134+0.8X
