Both are lounging on a log eating the bread. Gale: We could do it you know. Katniss: What? Gale: Leave the district. Run off. Live in the woods. You and I, we could make it. Pause. What can you have? Five entries? I had six when I was just twelve years old. Katniss: (Steps between Gale and Madge, looks at Gale.) That’s not her fault. Gale: It’s no one’s fault. Just the way it is. Madge: (Emotionless now. Trades money for berries.) Good luck, Katniss. Katniss: You, too. Door closes. Switches to next clip. Setting: In front of a run-down building. Katniss giggles. Mr. Everdeen: (Jokingly.) Katniss, as long as you can find yourself, you will never starve. He continues to sing. Are you, are you Coming to the tree Where the dead man called out For his love to flee… Fade out

Scene 3a Resumed: Characters, setting, costumes, props, makeup, and hair are the same as in scene 3a. Goes back to shot of Mrs. Everdeen braiding Katniss’ hair. She is finishing now, and ties it back with a hair tie. Katniss gets up and walks over to the cracked mirror Prim was in front of. Prim steps aside and lets Katniss admire herself. Prim: (Quietly.) You look beautiful. Katniss: And nothing like myself. Katniss hugs Prim. Prim’s blouse becomes untucked. Katniss: Tuck in your tail, little duck. Prim: (Giggles.) Quack. Katniss: (Light laugh.) Quack, yourself. Come on, let’s eat. Katniss begins to leave the room, but Prim stays put. Katniss turns around to look at her. Katniss: What’s wrong, Primrose? Prim: I’m… I’m scared.

Katniss hugs Prim. Katniss: It’s only your first year, Prim. You are one slip in thousands. They won’t pick you. Prim: But Katniss, I’m worried about you. Katniss: I’ll be fine. Prim: Promise they won’t pick you! Promise! Katniss: I promise. Fades Out

I am honored to be here with you all. (Giggles in an unbelieving way.) Shot goes to Katniss, who is in a group of girls, staring, with a concerned look on her face, to the left of the camera at Gale. Shot goes to Gale, who is staring back at her with “a ghost of a smile.” Suddenly his face drops and he looks away. Shot goes back to Katniss. Each shot lasts approximately five seconds. Katniss’ thoughts: (Voice-over. Echoed slightly.) But there are still thousands of slips. Shot reverts to Effie, who approaches the girls’ glass ball. Shot is from the front of the stage, showing most of Effie, as well as the boys’ glass ball. Effie should be offcenter.

Effie: Ladies first! Camera zooms in on her hand. She reaches in, digs her hand deep into the ball, and pulls out a slip. She walks back to the podium and smoothes the slip out. Camera goes to shot over her shoulder, focus on the print of the slip. Effie Trinket: (Clearly.) Primrose Everdeen. Shot goes to Prim who blinks, shocked, and clenches her fists by her side. She takes small, little steps up to the stage. When she is almost to the top of the stage, the shot reverts to Katniss. She gapes in awe for a moment and pushes her way through the crowd of kids. Katniss: (Screaming.) Prim! Prim! Katniss pushes in front of Prim. Katniss: I volunteer! I volunteer as tribute! Prim screams hysterically behind Katniss. Prim wraps her arms around Katniss. Prim: No, Katniss! No! You can’t go! Katniss: (Pained.) Prim, let go. Let go! Gale comes up behind them and lifts Prim up. He carries her off the stage to Mrs. Everdeen. As he picks up Prim, he says… Gale: (Pained.) Up you go, Catnip. Katniss clenches her fists and walks up the steps to the stage. She stands next to Effie. Effie: Lovely! That’s the spirit of the games! What’s your name? Katniss: Katniss Everdeen. Effie: I bet my buttons that was your sister. Don’t want her to steal all the glory, do we? Come on everybody! Let’s give a big round of applause to our newest tribute! Crickets chirp, sound effect. Effie: (Surprised.) Okay then, time to announce our male tribute! Effie approaches the boys’ glass ball. Camera zooms in on her hand. She reaches in and grabs the first slip she encounters. She walks back to the podium and smoothes the slip out. Camera goes to shot over her shoulder, focus on the print of the slip. Effie: Peeta Mellark. Katniss’ thoughts: Oh no, not him. As Peeta walks up the stage. Fades to Scene 4b

Makeup: Peeta- Red hand mark, from slap. Hair: Katniss- Very messy pigtails. Peeta- Normal. Katniss is first seen in the shot. She appears soaked to the bone and defeated. She walks over to the trashcan, pulls of the lid with a hopeful look on her face, and shuts it, disappointed. Suddenly, the garbled, angry speech of Mrs. Mellark pierces the sound of the rain. Mrs. Mellark: (Ad-libs.) Get out of my trash, filthy child. Nothing for you, go away before I call the peacekeepers. The door slams. Katniss slumps down against a tree. More garbled speech and the sound of a blow come from inside of the house. The door suddenly opens. Shot goes to Peeta, who carries two loafs of burnt, blackened bread. He looks at Katniss and tosses them, one after the other, onto the ground in her general direction. He closes the door. Katniss approaches the bread. One of the loaves lands by a dandelion. The shot of the dandelion dissolves back to scene 4a.

Scene 4a Resumed: Characters, setting, costumes, props, hair, and makeup same as scene 4a. Haymitch hobbles up to the pair of tributes. He pushes between them, put a hand on the inside shoulder of each of them, and gives Katniss and Peeta a shake. Haymitch: Look at them! Look at these two! I like ‘em. Lots of… Spunk! (Points at the camera.) More than you! MORE THAN YOU! Peeta and Katniss are whisked off the stage without another word. Scene 5: Characters: Katniss, Prim, Mrs. Everdeen, Madge, Gale. Prim hurries over to Katniss and hugs her. Mrs. Everdeen uncomfortably sits down on the couch next to them. They sit silently for a few seconds. Then, Katniss interrupts the silence. Katniss: (Speaking mostly to Prim.) You have to remember how to get by without me. Prim, do not take any tesserae, the fewer entries you have the better. You can make it with your goat and mom’s apothecary business. (Turning to Mrs. Everdeen.) Gale will get you the herbs you need. He will bring you what game he can. Conserve fuel, make the best trades you can, and keep Prim in school. (Grabs Mrs. Everdeen’s arm.) Listen to me. You can’t leave again. Mrs. Everdeen: (Looking at the floor.) I know, I won’t. I couldn’t help what—

Katniss: (Interrupting Mrs. Everdeen.) Well, you have to help it this time. You can’t clock out and leave Prim on her own. There is no me now to keep you both alive. Mrs. Everdeen nods. Prim: I’ll be all right, Katniss. But you have to take care, too. You’re so fast and brave. Maybe you can win. Katniss: Maybe. Then we would be as rich as Haymitch. Prim: I don’t care if we’re rich. I just want you to come home. You will try, won’t you? Really, really try? Katniss: Really, really try. A bell rings, and Prim and Mrs. Everdeen leave. Moments later, Madge enters. She walks straight to Katniss. She doesn’t sit down. Madge: They let you wear one thing from your district in the arena. One thing to remind you of home. Will you wear this? (She holds out the Mockingjay pin.) Katniss: Your pin?

Madge: Here, I’ll put it on your dress, all right? (She leans in and fastens it to Katniss’ dress.) Promise you’ll wear it into the arena, Katniss? Promise? Katniss: Yes. Madge squeezes Katniss’ hand and walks out. Moments later Gale enters. He embraces Katniss. He then pulls her away by her shoulders and begins to speak. Gale: Listen. Getting a knife should be pretty easy, but you have got to get your hands on a bow. That’s your best chance. Katniss: They don’t always have bows. Gale: Then make one. A weak bow is better than none at all. Katniss: I don’t even know if there will be wood. Gale: There’s almost always some wood. Katniss: Yes, there is usually some. Gale: Katniss, it’s just hunting. You’re the best hunter I know. Katniss: It’s not just hunting. They’re armed. They think. Gale: So do you. And you’ve had more practice. Real practice. You know how to kill. Katniss: Not people. Gale: (Grimly.) How different can it be, really? Suddenly, a Peacekeeper bursts in. Gale: Can I have more time? Peacekeeper: No, sorry. The Peacekeeper begins to usher Gale out of the room. Katniss: Please, Gale, don’t let them starve! Gale is nearly out of the room. Gale: I won’t! You know that! Katniss, remember, I— The slamming of the door cuts him off. Shot of Katniss almost panting, with a pained look on her face. Fades out.

Katniss sits on a cot and awaits Cinna’s arrival. He enters the room and walks over to Katniss. Cinna: Hello Katniss. I’m Cinna, your stylist. Katniss: Hello. Cinna: I am sorry this happened to you. Katniss: Most people just congratulate me. Cinna: I don’t see the point in that. Katniss: You’re new, aren’t you? I don’t think I have seen you before. Cinna: Yes, this is my first year in the games. Katniss: So they gave you District Twelve. Newcomers usually end up with the least desirable district. Cinna: I asked for District Twelve. Pause. Katniss: So, you’re here to make me look pretty. Cinna: I’m here to help you make an impression. Now, for the opening ceremony costumes. As you know, it is customary to reflect the flavor of the district. Katniss: So, I’ll be in a coal miner outfit? Cinna: That’s very overdone. No one will remember you in that. It is my job to make you unforgettable. (Small pause.) You’re not afraid of fire, are you Katniss? Black out. Voice over of Katniss: Peeta, what do you think about the fire? Voice over of Peeta: I’ll rip your cape off if you rip off mine. Voice over of Katniss: Deal.

Glimmer: Amazing. (Flashes the audience a smile) Caesar Flickman: what will be your strategy? Glimmer: I’m gonna try to stay alive (patronizingly) Caesar Flickman: who do you think will be the most competition? Glimmer: (Unconsciously glances at Katniss. Shot goes to Katniss for a moment, then reverts to Glimmer.) Oh, um, (Disoriented.) I don’t know… I guess, well, the arena will turn out to be my toughest challenge. Fades out. Fades in to shot of Marvel and Caesar. Caesar Flickman: So Marvel, what has impressed you the most since you came to the Capitol? Marvel: Easy, all the pretty ladies. (Women begin to cheer and swoon.) Caesar Flickman: Oh, what is your strategy in the games gonna be? Marvel: Ya know, knock ‘em dead! (Girls giggle.) Caesar Flickman: I see, it’s all about the girls, ain’t it? Marvel: Yep, I just can’t get enough, especially the Capitol girls. (Girls scream.) Caesar Flickman: What do you think the toughest thing you’ll have to overcome in the games? Marvel: Not having anyone to kiss me for more than a week! (Winks at camera.) Fades out. Fades in to shot of Clove and Caesar. Caesar Flickman: Welcome to the Capitol, Clove! How do you like it so far? Clove: Well, I miss some of my favorite weapons back home, but I love learning all these new techniques. Caesar Flickman: How do you mean? Clove: Like, the other day, I learned five new ways to put a knife through someone’s stomach and three ways to slit a throat. Caesar Flickman: (A bit disgusted, but trying hard not to show it.) Well, I’m glad I’m not going in that arena with you! Clove: Yeah, I already feel so sorry for my, ahem, competition. (Laughs.) Not! Fades out. Fades in to shot of Cato and Caesar. Caesar Flickman: Cato, I hear you received a ten in training. Has that improved upon your stay here at the Capitol?

Cato: A bit, but I am still upset that I have been her four days and I haven’t snapped a single neck! Caesar Flickman: Well then, I hope your stay improves. What is your greatest strength in the arena going to be? Cato: (Flexes muscles.) Isn’t it obvious? Caesar Flickman: Yes it is, Cato! Is there anything you want to say to Panem? Cato: I just want to say to my fellow tributes, you have no chance against the mighty Cato, so you had better sleep with one eye open. Fades out. Fades in to shot of Foxface and Caesar. Caesar Flickman: The Capitol is quite a change from District 5, don’t you say? Foxface: Yes, it is much too simple for my taste. Caesar: What is your strategy? Foxface: Well, I’m smart enough to not give away my strategy, unlike some competitors. Fades out. Fades in to shot of Rue and Caesar. Caesar Flickman: Great job on your training score, Rue. Seven is excellent for someone of your stature. Rue: (Meekly.) Thank you, sir. It means a lot. Caesar Flickman: You’re very welcome. May I ask what your greatest strength in the arena will be? Rue: I’m very hard to catch. And if they can’t catch me, they can’t kill me. So don’t count me out. Caesar Flickman: I wouldn’t in a million years. Fades out. Fades in to shot of Thresh and Caesar. Caesar Flickman: Hey, Thresh! Thresh: (No reply.) Caesar Flickman: (Exaggerate.) Okay then, let’s get started. So, you got a ten in training. How did you wow the Gamemakers? Thresh: (Mumbling.) I don’t know. Caesar Flickman: I heard you turned down the Careers. Is this true? Thresh: (Stonily.) Yes. Caesar Flickman: What is your strategy? Thresh: (Shrugs shoulders.) Win. Fades out. Fades in to shot of Katniss and Caesar. Caesar Flickman: So, Katniss, the Capitol must be quite a change from District 12. What impressed you most since you arrived here? Katniss: (Stammers.) Uh… Uh… The lamb stew. Caesar Flickman: The one with the dried plums? (Katniss nods.) Oh, I eat it by the bucketful. It doesn’t show does it? (Turns so audience can see stomach.) Now Katniss, when you came out in the opening ceremonies, my heart actually stopped. What did you think of that costume? Katniss: You mean after I got over my fear of being burned alive? Caesar Flickman: Yes, start then. Katniss: I thought Cinna was brilliant and it was the most gorgeous costume I have ever seen and I couldn’t believe I was wearing it. I can’t believe I am wearing this, either. I mean look at it… Katniss stands up and spins around.

Caesar Flickman: Oh, do that again! (Katniss spins then stops.) Don’t stop! Katniss: I have to, I’m dizzy. Caesar: All right, all right. Can’t have you following in your mentor’s footsteps, now can we? So, how ‘bout that training score. E-LEV-EN. Give us a hint on what happened there! Katniss: All I can say is I think it was a first. Caesar Flickman: You’re killing us, Details, Details! Katniss: I’m not supposed to talk about it. My lips are sealed. Caesar Flickman: Let’s go back to the moment they called your sister’s name at the reaping. And you volunteered. Can you tell us about her? Katniss: Her name’s Prim. She’s just 12. And I love her more than anything. Caesar Flickman: What did she say to you? After the reaping? Katniss: She asked me to try really hard to win. Caesar Flickman: And what did you say? Katniss: I swore I would. Caesar Flickman: I bet you did. It looks like we’re out of time. Best of luck, Katniss Everdeen, tribute from District 12. Fades out. Fades in to shot of Peeta and Caesar. Caesar Flickman: Last but not least, Peeta Mellark, from District 12. Peeta, I heard you got a pretty decent score. Big eight? Peeta: That’s right. I think I wowed them with my baking skills. I’m the town baker’s son, and I think it gives me an edge over my fellow tributes. Caesar Flickman: Oh, how is that? Peeta: You see the district breads correspond with the tributes. Take district 11, for instance, the bread is tough and so is Thresh. District 4’s bread is full of seaweed, and so are some of their tributes’ brains. Caesar Flickman: (Laughs.) I see what you mean! (Pause.) What is your favorite part of being here in the Capitol? Peeta: I like it all, but what troubles me are the showers. At a hundred buttons each, I can’t help but be intimidated. One wrong push and you are doused with women’s perfume. Tell me, do I still smell like roses? Caesar Flickman: Well, let me check (Sniffs Peeta.) Peeta: Have you had that problem, Caesar? Because… (Sniffs Caesar.) I smell a bit of cinnamon! Caesar Flickman: Really? (Both sniff and ad-lib.) Peeta, a nice-smelling guy like you must have a girlfriend back home. Do you? Peeta: (Gives a hesitate shake of head.) Caesar Flickman: Handsome lad as you are. What’s her name? Peeta: Well, there is this one girl. I’ve had a crush on her ever since I can remember. But I’m pretty sure she didn’t know I was alive until the Reaping. Caesar Flickman: She has another fellow? Peeta: I don’t know but a lot of boys like her. Caesar Flickman: So here’s what you do. You win, you go home. She can’t turn you down then, eh? Peeta: I don’t think it’s going to work out. Winning... Won’t help in my case. Caesar Flickman: Why not? Peeta: Because… Because…she came here with me. Shot goes to Katniss, who has a surprised look on her face. Shot reverts to Peeta and Caesar. Caesar Flickman: Oh, that’s a piece of bad luck. Peeta: It’s not good. Caesar Flickman: Well, I don’t think any of us can blame you. It’d be hard not to fall for that young lady. She didn’t know? Peeta: (Shakes head.) Not until now. Caesar Flickman: Wouldn’t you love to pull her back out here and get a response? Sadly, rules are rules, and Katniss Everdeen’s time has been spent. Well, best of luck to you, Peeta Mellark, and I think I speak for all of Panem when I say our hearts go with yours.

Peeta: (Quietly.) Thank you.

Scene 8: Characters: Katniss, Peeta, Effie, Haymicth, Cinna, Portia. Setting: The hallway of a fancy hotel. There are two elevators. Effie- Capitol Esq. makeup. Portia- Rather subdued Capitol Esq. makeup. Peeta and Katniss exit the elevators. Katniss shoves Peeta to the urn. He loses his balance and falls. The urn falls on the floor and shatters. Shot goes to Effie, Haymitch, Cinna, and Portia entering from the elevators. Shot reverts to Peeta, who has bloodied hands. Peeta: What was that for? Katniss: (Shouting.) You had no right! No right to go saying those things about me! Effie: What’s going on? Did you fall? Peeta: After she shoved me! Effie and Cinna help Peeta up. Haymitch: (Turning to Katniss.) Shoved him? Katniss: This was your idea, wasn’t it? Turning me into some kind of fool in front of the entire country? Peeta: It was my idea. Haymitch just helped me with it. Katniss: Yes, Haymitch is very helpful. To you! Haymitch: You are a fool! Do you think he hurt you? That boy just gave you something you could never achieve on your own. Katniss: He made me look weak!

Haymitch: He made you look desirable! And let’s face it, you can use all the help you can get in that department. You were about as romantic as dirt until he said he wanted you. Now they all do. You’re all they’re talking about. The star-crossed lovers from District 12! Katniss: But we’re not star-crossed lovers! Haymitch grabs Katniss’ shoulders and pins her against the wall. Haymitch: Who cares? It’s all a big show. The most I could say about you after your interview was that you were nice enough, although that in itself is a small miracle. Now I can say you’re a heartbreaker. Oh, oh, oh, how the boys back home fall longingly at your feet. Which do you think will get you more sponsors? Katniss shoves his hands off her shoulders. Cinna comes over to Katniss and grips her arm. Cinna: He’s right, Katniss. Katniss: I should have been told, so I didn’t look so stupid. Portia: No, your reaction was perfect. If you’d known, it wouldn’t have read as real. Peeta: She’s just worried about her boyfriend. Katniss: I don’t have a boyfriend. Peeta: Whatever. I bet he is smart enough to know a bluff when he sees it. Besides, you didn’t say you loved me. So what does it matter? Katniss: After he said he loved me, did you think I could be in love with him, too? Portia: I did. The way you avoided looking at the cameras, the blush. Others except for Peeta chime in, ad-libing “Yeah, agreed, for sure… etc.” Haymitch: You’re golden, sweetheart. You’re going to have sponsors lined up around the block. Katniss: (To Peeta.) I’m sorry I shoved you. Peeta: Doesn’t matter. Although it’s technically illegal. Blackout.

Scene 9: Characters: Katniss, Peeta. Setting: The rooftop of the Training center. Night. Costumes: Katniss- Nightgown. Peeta- Simple pajamas. Props: None. Hair: Katniss- Braided back. Peeta- Rather messy. Peeta sits towards the edge of the roof. Katniss walks over toward him until she is a yard or two behind him. Katniss: You should be getting some sleep. Katniss walks over and sits to the right of Peeta. Peeta: Couldn’t sleep, either? Katniss: Couldn’t turn my mind off. Peeta: Thinking about your family? Katniss: No. All I can do is wonder about tomorrow. Which is pointless, of course. I’m really sorry about your hands. Peeta: It doesn’t matter, Katniss. I’ve never been a contender in these Games anyway. Katniss: That’s no way to be thinking. Peeta: Why not? It’s true. My best hope is to not disgrace myself and… Katniss: And what? Peeta: I don’t know how to say it exactly. Only… I want to die as myself. Does that make any sense? Katniss shakes her head. Peeta: I don’t want them to change me in there. Turn me into some kind of monster that I’m not. Katniss: Do you mean you won’t kill anyone? Peeta: No, when the time comes, I’m sure I’ll kill just like everybody else. I can’t go down without a fight. Only I keep wishing I could think of a way to… to show the Capitol they don’t own me. That I’m more than just a piece in their Games. Katniss: I just can’t afford to think like that. Peeta: Okay. (Mimicking Haymitch’s tone.) Thanks for the tip, sweetheart. Katniss: Look, if you want to spend the last hours of your life planning some noble death in the arena, that’s your choice. I want to spend mine in District 12. Peeta: Wouldn’t surprise me if you do. Give my mother my best when you make it back, will you?

Katniss: Count on it. Katniss gets up and leaves. Fades out.

Scene 11: Characters: Katniss, Peeta, Cato, Clove, Glimmer, the Female District 4 Tribute, the Female District 8 Tribute Setting: A wooded area of the arena. Day, evening, then night. Costumes: Arena clothes

Props: Katniss- Backpack, sleeping bag. Careers- Various supplies and weapons. Hair: All- Same as previous scene. Makeup: Cuts, bruises, all minor injuries. Shot of Katniss trekking through the woods lasts around five seconds. Fades to a second shot, the sky a bit darker this time. Fades to a third shot, sky even darker. Katniss walks to a tree and climbs up. She unravels her sleeping bag and climbs in, resting on a branch. The last thing seen in the shot is a shot of everything below Katniss as seen from her eyes. Fades out Snapping of branches sound x 2 Goes to shot of Katniss in the tree, suddenly wide awake. Snapping of branches sound x 2 Katniss: (Under breath.) You idiot! A fire starts and the hands of the Female District 8 Tribute are seen. She is located 20 or so yards from Katniss. It is just light enough to make out her silhouette. From the brush comes the career pack. Marvel threatens the girl with a spear. District 8 Female Tribute: No, no, please don’t! No! Ahhh!! (Screams.) Marvel: Twelve down and eleven to go! Careers hoot. Cato: Better clear out so they can get the body before it starts stinking. Careers head closer to Katniss’ tree. Clove: Shouldn’t we have heard a cannon by now? Glimmer: I’d say yes. Nothing to prevent them from going in immediately. Marvel: She’s dead. I struck her myself. Cato: Someone should go back. Make sure the job’s done. Marvel: I said she’s dead! Peeta: We’re wasting time. I’ll go finish her and let’s move on. Shot of Katniss, who nearly fell out of the tree. Cato: Go on, Lover Boy. See for yourself. Peeta heads towards the girl. Glimmer waits until Peeta is out of earshot, then speaks. Glimmer: Why can’t we just kill him now and get it over with? Marvel: Let him tag along. What’s the harm? And he is handy with a knife. District 4 Female Tribute: Besides, he’s our best chance of finding her. Glimmer: Why? You think she bought into that sappy romance stuff? Clove: She might have. Seemed pretty simple minded to me. Every time I think about her spinning around in that dress, I want to puke. Glimmer: Wish we knew how she got that 11. Clove: I bet you lover boy knows. Peeta returns. Cato: Was she dead? Peeta: She is now. Ready to move on? Fades out

She sniffs, with a confused look on her face. Katniss: Smoke? Smoke? Fire…! Shot goes to a burning bush, then to Katniss’ shocked face. She gets up unsteadily, still looking at the burning bush, and runs away.

Blackout. Voice-over of Cinna: Katniss, the girl who was on fire… Literally.

Scene 13: Characters: Katniss, Rue, Peeta, Marvel, Glimmer, Cato, Clove, District 4 Female Tribute. Setting: A spring-fed pool in the arena. Costumes: Arena clothes. Props: Katniss- Orange backpack, knife. Careers- Various supplies and weapons. Glimmer- Silver bow and arrows. Cato- Sword. Tree- Tracker Jacker nest. Hair: Same as previous scene. Makeup: Katniss- Large burn on calf, smaller burns on hands, three Tracker Jacker stings; One on knee, one on neck, one on cheek. Careers- Minor cuts and bruises, some burns (small). Fades in to shot of Katniss sitting on the shore with her right calf in the water. Suddenly, foots steps are heard, and Katniss scurries up a tree. When the careers have stopped to rest under Katniss’ tree, she speaks. Katniss: How’s everything with you? Cato: Well enough. Yourself? Katniss: It’s been a bit warm for my taste. The air’s better up here. Why don’t you come on up? Cato: Think I will. Glimmer holds out the silver bow and sheath of arrows.

Glimmer: Here, take this, Cato. Cato: No, I’ll do better with my sword. Cato hoists himself into the tree, and Katniss begins to climb again. Cato’s foot snaps a branch and he falls. He regains his feet. Marvel: You try, Glimmer. Glimmer scales the tree until the branches start to crack. She is twenty or so feet up. She pulls out her bow and tries to shoot Katniss. The arrow lodges in a branch. Katniss grabs the arrow and waves it above her head. Glimmer climbs down and the careers regroup. Cato: I looked like a fool! Glimmer: We both did! How the heck did she get up that tree? Clove: That’s prolly how she got that 11. Marvel: How’re we gonna get ‘er down? District 4 Female Tribute: Yeah, we need to finish her off. Peeta: Oh, let her stay up there. It’s not like she’s going anywhere. We’ll deal with her in the morning. Katniss unrolls her sleeping bag and settles in. Katniss sees a pair of eyes looking at her from a neighboring tree. Rue sits on a branch, watching her. Rue slides her hand out into the open and points to the Tracker Jacker nest above Katniss. Katniss looks at the nest, and back to where Rue was, but she is gone. Katniss works her way up the tree. She begins to saw at the branch the nest is hanging from, but halts three-quarters of the way through, due to the pain in her hands. She inches back down to where she sat before and notices a small plastic pot attached to a silver parachute. She reaches in the pot and pulls out a bottle filled with white powder. Katniss rubs a bit on her hand and her burns immediately vanish. She applies some to her calf, then puts the bottle in her backpack. Katniss snuggles up in her sleeping bag and falls asleep. Fades out Fades in. Dawn. Katniss wakes up and peers down at the careers. Glimmer is propped up against a tree, asleep. The rest lie in sleeping bags, asleep. Katniss: (Hushed whisper.) Rue. Rue appears from behind a tree. Katniss holds up her knife and makes a sawing motion. Rue nods, then disappears. Katniss climbs up the tree and begins to saw. A quiet buzzing is heard, and it gradually grows louder and louder. An accented buzz is heard and Katniss’ free hand goes to her knee. She winces in pain. The knife cuts through and Katniss pushes the branch away from her. Two more accented buzzes are heard. The careers wake up and scream. Clove: Tracker Jackers! Wake up! To the lake! To the lake! All ad-lib. The girl from District 4 tries to escape, but she falls over, twitching, only 10 yards from Katniss’ tree. Glimmer heads towards the lake, and tries to bat the wasps away with her bow. She shrieks and calls Cato’s name. She falls, twitching hysterically for a few moments, then goes still. Katniss scampers down the tree and takes off in the opposite direction of the lake. She stumbles to the spring-fed pool and submerges. She then climbs onto the rocks and examines the stings. Suddenly, she gets up, and stumbles back to Glimmers disfigured body. She has over a dozen stings. Her fingers grasp the silver bow and the sheath of arrows is trapped under her. A cannon fires. Katniss rips the bow from Glimmer’s grasp and rolls her onto her stomach in order to retrieve the arrows. Peeta stumbles back to Glimmer and Katniss. Katniss has retrieved the bow and the arrows now and attempts to position one on the string. Peeta has been badly stung under one ear. Peeta: What are you still doing here? Are you mad? Get up! Get up! Run! Run! Behind him, Cato slashes through the brush. He is badly stung under one eye. He carries his sword. Katniss flees, tripping and falling often. She goes for a short while and hallucinates. She trips into a pit. Blackout.

Scene 14: Characters: Katniss, Rue. Setting: A pit, then the stream. Costumes: Arena clothes. Props: Katniss- Backpack, knife, black sleeping bag, bow, sheath of arrows, pack of crackers, dried beef strips, bottle full of iodine, matches, wire, bottle for water, night vision goggles, burn medicine. Rue- Roots, berries, leaves, roasted bird, water skin, a homemade slingshot, an extra pair of sock, a sharp shard of rock, nuts, greens, small rucksack. Hair: Same as previous scene, but messier. Makeup: Katniss- Cuts and bruises, slightly inflamed burn on right calf, three Tracker Jacker stings; one on knee, neck and cheek. Rue- Burn on forearm, various cuts and bruises. Fades in blurrily to shot of Katniss in the pit. She sip from her water bottle. She sits up, grabs her gear, and heads out. Fades in to shot of her making a small fire by the stream. Suddenly, a twig snaps. Katniss sits up, alert. Shot goes to the tip of a child’s book peeking out from behind a tree. Katniss grins. Katniss: You know, they’re not the only ones who can form alliances. Rue waits a bit then peers out from behind the tree. Rue: You want me for an ally? Katniss: Why not? You saved me with those Tracker Jackers. You’re smart enough to still be alive. And I can’t seem to shake you anyway. You hungry? Come on then, I’ve had two kills today. Rue slowly steps out into the open. Rue: I can fix your stings. Katniss: Can you? How? Rue digs into her jacket pocket and pulls out a handful of leaves. Katniss: Where’d you find those? Rue: Just around. We all carry them when we work in the orchards. They left a lot of nests there. There are a lot here, too. Katniss: That’s right, you’re District eleven. Agriculture. Orchards huh? That must be how you can fly around in the trees like you’ve got wings.

Rue Smiles. Katniss: Well, come on then. Fix me up. Katniss plops down by the fire and rolls her pant leg up. Rue puts the handful of leaves in her mouth and chews them up, then spits them on Katniss knee. Katniss sighs in relief. Rue giggles. Rue: Lucky you had the sense to pull the stingers out or you’d be a lot worse. Katniss: (Begging.) Do my neck! Do my cheek! Rue stuffs another handful in her mouth and Katniss begins laughing but then notices Rue’s burn. Katniss: I’ve something for that. Katniss sets aside her weapons and rubs the burn medicine on Rue’s arm. Rue: (Longingly.) You have good sponsors. Katniss: Have you gotten anything yet? Rue shakes her head. Katniss: You will, though. Watch. The closer we get to the end, the more people will realize how clever you are. Pause. Rue: You weren’t joking about wanting me for an ally? Katniss: No, I meant it. Katniss: I thought in District 11 you’d have a bit more to eat then us. You know, since you grow the food. Rue: (Eyes widen.) Oh, no, we’re not allowed to eat the crops. Katniss: They arrest you or something? Rue: They whip you and make everyone else watch. The mayor’s very strict about it. Do you get all the coal you want? Katniss: No. Just what we buy and whatever we track in on our boots. Rue: They feed us a bit extra during harvest, so that people can keep going longer. Katniss: Don’t you have to be in school? Rue: Not during harvest. Everyone works then. Why don’t we lay out our food so we can plan our next few meals? Katniss lays out her kills, crackers and beef. Rue gathers roots, nuts, greens, and some berries. Katniss grabs a berry. Katniss: You sure this is safe? Rue: Oh, yes, we have them back home. I’ve been eating them for days. Rue pops a handful in her mouth. Katniss bites into one. Rue and Katniss divide their food. Rue shows Katniss her small water skin, a homemade slingshot, an extra pair of sock, and a sharp shard of rock that works as a knife. Rue: I know it’s not much, but I had to get away from the Cornucopia fast. Katniss: You did just right. Katniss spreads out her gear. Rue gasps when she sees the sunglasses. Rue: How did you get those? Katniss: In my pack. They’ve been useless so far. They don’t block the sun and they make it harder to see. Rue: These aren’t for sun, they’re for darkness. Sometimes when we harvest through the night, they’ll pass out a few pairs to those of us highest in the trees. Where the torchlight doesn’t reach. One time, this boy Martin, he tried to keep a pair. Hid it in his pants. They killed him on the spot. Katniss: They killed a boy for taking these? Rue: Yes, and everyone knew he was no danger. Martin wasn’t right in the head. I mean, he still acted like a three-year-old. He just wanted the glasses to play with. Katniss: So what do they do? Rue: They let you see in complete darkness. Try them tonight when the sun goes down.

Katniss: Where do you sleep? In the trees? Rue nods. Katniss: In just your jacket? Rue holds up extra pair of socks. Rue: I have these for my hands. Katniss: You can share my sleeping bag if you want. We’ll both easily fit. Rue’s face lights up. Fades out. Fades in. Night. Rue and Katniss sit in a tree. Katniss: Rue, I only woke up today. How many nights did I miss? (Speaks in whisper. Put hand over lips. Rue does the same.) Rue: Two. The girls from District One and Four are dead. There’s ten of us left. Katniss: Something strange happened. At least I think it did. It might have been the Tracker Jacker venom making me imagine things. You know the boy from my district? Peeta? I think he saved my life. But he was with the careers. Rue: He’s not with them now. I’ve spied on their base camp by the lake. They made it back before they collapsed from the stingers. But he’s not there. Maybe he did save you and had to run. Katniss: If he did, it was all probably just part of his act. You know, to make people think he’s in love with me. Rue: Oh, I didn’t think it was an act. Katniss: ‘Course it is. He worked it out with our mentor. Let’s try out these glasses. Katniss puts glasses on after pulling them out of the bag. Katniss: I wonder who else got a pair of these. Rue: The Careers have two pairs. But they’ve got everything down by the lake. And they’re so strong. Katniss: We’re strong, too. Just in a different way. Rue: You are. You can shoot. What can I do? Katniss: You can feed yourself. Can they? Rue: They don’t need to. They have all those supplies. Katniss: Say they didn’t. Say the supplies were gone. How long would they last I mean it is the Hunger Games, right? Rue: But Katniss, they’re not hungry. Katniss: No. They’re not, that’s the problem. I think we’re going to have to fix that, Rue.

Scene 15: Characters: Katniss, Rue, Marvel, Cato, Clove, the District 3 Male Tribute. Setting: The arena, then the Careers’ camp. Costumes: Arena clothes. Props: Katniss- Backpack, knife, bow, sheath of arrows, Mockingjay pin. Rue- Rucksack, rope necklace with bead, two eggs. Hair: Katniss- Messy braid. Rue- Messy pigtails. Makeup: Minor cuts and bruises. Shot goes directly from previous blackout to next scene. Rue sits on a branch near Katniss and Katniss sleeps in the fork of a branch. A cannon fires, jolting Katniss awake. Rue cups the two eggs in her hands. Katniss: Who do you think that was? Rue: I don’t know, it could have been any of the others. I guess we’ll know tonight. Katniss: Who’s left again? Rue: The boy from District One. Both tributes from Two, the boy from Three. Thresh and me. And you and Peeta. That’s eight. Wait, and the boy from 10, he makes nine. Katniss: Who’s the other person? Rue: I can’t remember? Can you? Katniss: Nope. Rue: I wonder how that last one died. Katniss: No telling. But it’s good for us. A death should hold the crowd for a bit. Maybe we’ll have some time to do something before the Gamemakers decide things have been moving too slowly. What’s in your hands? Rue holds out her hands, revealing the eggs. Rue: Breakfast. Katniss: What kind are those? Not sure. There’s a marshy area over that way. Some kind of waterbird. Fades to shot of Katniss and Rue gathering their supplies. Katniss: Ready to do it? Rue jumps up. Rue: Do what? Katniss: Today we take out the Careers’ food. Rue: Really? How? Katniss: No idea. Come on, we’ll figure out a plan while we hunt. Fades to shot of Katniss and Rue in some part of the woods, sitting on a log, and drinking water from their bottles. Katniss: So, tell me everything you know about the Careers’ camp, once more. Rue: They have set up their camp by the lake. Their supply stash is about thirty yards away. During the day, they’ve been leaving the boy from District Three to watch over the supplies.

Katniss: The boy from District Three? He’s working with them? Rue: Yeah, he stays at the camp full-time. He got stung, too, when they drew the Tracker Jackers in by the lake. I guess they agreed to let him live if he acted as their guard. But he’s not very big. Katniss: What weapons does he have? Rue: Not much that I could see. A spear, I think. Katniss: And the food’s just out in the open? Rue nods. Katniss: Something’s not quite right about the whole setup. Rue: I know. But I couldn’t tell what exactly. Katniss, even if you could get to the food, how would you get rid of it? Katniss: Burn it. Dump it in the lake. Soak it in fuel. Katniss pokes Rue in the belly. Katniss: Eat it! Rue giggles. Katniss: Don’t worry, I’ll think of something. Destroying things is much easier than making them. Fades to new shot of Katniss and Rue, sitting somewhere else in the woods. They are assembling their supplies. Katniss: Here, take my sleeping bag. Rue: What about you? Won’t you be could? Katniss: Not if I pick up another bag down by the lake. You know, stealing isn’t illegal here. Rue: I have an idea. Listen. Rue whistles four note mockingjay tune. Rue: It might not work. But if you hear the mockingjays singing it, you’ll know I’m okay, only I can’t get back right away. Katniss: Are there many mockingjays here? Rue: Haven’t you seen them? They’re everywhere? Katniss: I haven’t noticed. Okay, then. If all goes according to plan, I’ll see you back here for dinner. Rue throws her arms around Katniss. While still embracing, they speak. Rue: You be careful. Katniss: You, too. Katniss heads towards the stream, parting ways with Rue. Fades out.

Scene 16: Characters: Katniss, Marvel, Cato, Clove, District 3 Male Tribute Setting: A grassy expanse ringed by trees. In the middle of the plane, a pyramid of boxes, crates, backpacks, and other similar items sits. A sack of apples rests near the top. The stack is about four feet high. Costumes: Arena clothes. Props: Katniss- Orange backpack, bow, sheathe of arrows. District 3 Male Tribute- Spear, plastic box, stones. Clove- Knives. Cato- Sword. Marvel- Spear. FoxfaceBackpack. Hair: All in messy styles, remotely resembling those of scene 10. Makeup: Small cuts and bruises. Katniss hides in the trees and undergrowth ringing the plain. The District 3 Male Tribute sits on a crate or box and fiddles with some kind of small plastic box. Clove polishes her knives and Cato stalks around, sword drawn. Marvel loiters, spear in his hand. Cato points upward at smoke rising from the trees. He yells out. Cato: Hey guys, check it out. Looks like someone is inviting us to a cozy get together. Others snicker and arm themselves. Clove motions to the District 3 Male Tribute. Clove: Is he staying? Cato: He’s coming. We need him in the woods, and his job’s done here, anyway. No one can touch those supplies. Marvel: What about lover boy? Cato: I keep telling you, forget about him. I know where I cut him. It’s a miracle he hasn’t bled to death yet. At any rate, he’s in no shape to raid us. Come on. Cato and the others stalk off into the woods, to the left of the supplies. Cato: When we find District 12, I kill her in my own way, and no one interferes. Katniss emerges slightly, examining the supplies. Foxface darts out of the woods to the left of the supplies and approaches them. When she reaches a set marker, she takes small hops to the supplies, teetering slightly. At one point, she launches into the air, over a box, and lands poised on her tiptoes. She overshot slightly and her hands hit the ground. She squeals on impact. She regains her feet and continues until she has reached the supplies. She grabs various packages, an apple, and other smaller items and fills her backpack. She repeats the pattern of hopping and teetering until she is away from the set marker. She sprints off into the woods. Katniss looks shocked. Katniss: (Whispering.) It’s mined. Shot scans the supplies, almost passing the bag of apples, then reverts back and locks on it. Katniss loads her bow and shoots. The arrow leaves a rip in the bag. Katniss loads her bow and shoots. The arrow widens the rip to a gaping hole. Katniss loads her bow and shoots. The bag rips open fully. The apples spill to the ground and an explosion sound effect is heard. Katniss is blown backwards into the air. Debris rain down over her. No sound besides a ringing is heard for the rest of the scene. Katniss crawls from the plain and disappears into the woods just as the careers arrive. Cato goes mad, banging his fists on the ground and nearly tearing out his hair. The District 3 Male Tribute throws stones into the ruins and the careers subsequently kick through the charred supplies. Katniss chews her finger nails, curled up in a ball in the bushes. Cato turns to the District 3 Male tribute and appears to be shouting at him. The boy tries to run but Cato catches him in a headlock and snaps his neck by jerking his head to the side. The other two careers try to calm Cato down. He shouts some more, and the group grabs their weapons. They run off in the direction they did before. Fades out.

Rue: No. Rue lays on her side, body curved in and around the spear. Katniss takes out knife and cuts rue out of net. Katniss crouches next to rue. Rue reaches hand out and Katniss holds on to it. Rue: You blow up the food? Katniss: Every last bit. Rue: You have to win Katniss: I’m going to. Going to win for both of us now. Cannon sounds (sound effect). Rue: Don’t go. Tighten grip on Katniss’ hand. Katniss: Course not. Staying right here. Rue: Sing. Katniss: (Small cough then swallows hard.) Deep in the meadow, under the willow A bed of grass, A soft green pillow Lay down your head, And close your sleepy eyes And when again they open, The sun will rise. Here it’s safe, Here it’s warm Here the daisies guard you from every harm Here your dreams are sweet and tomorrow brings them true Here is the place where I love you. Mocking jays pick up her song. Katniss sits there watching as her tears drip on Rue’s face. Cannon fires. Slowly lays Rue’s head down on the ground and releases her hand. Takes Marvel’s pack and gets the arrow back. Katniss goes a few steps into the woods to a bank of wild flowers. Blossoms are in beautiful shades of violet and yellow and white. Goes back to Rue with an armful of the flowers and one by one she decorates Rue’s body in flowers, covering the wound, wreathing her hair and face. After done she takes a step back and looks at her companion. Katniss: Bye, Rue. Katniss presses her three middle fingers of left hand to her mouth and holds them out in Rue’s direction. She walks away without looking back. Mocking-jays give the hovercraft warning. The birds sing Rue’s melody. Katniss: Good and safe. We don’t have to worry about her now. A silver parachute floats down and lands in front of Katniss. She opens it and finds a small loaf of District 11 bread. Katniss: My thanks to the people of District 11.

Both tributes from the same district will be crowned winners if they are the last two alive. Does everyone understand? If the last two tributes standing are from the same district, they can both win. That's all. Happy Hunger Games, and may the odds be ever in your favor!

Katniss: Peeta! She claps her hands over her mouth. Fade out.

Katniss moves along the bank toward him. Peeta: Well, don't step on me. Katniss jumps back. Peeta opens his eyes and Katniss gasps. Peeta laughs.

Katniss: Close your eyes again. Peeta closes his eyes. Katniss: I guess all those hours decorating cakes paid off. Peeta: Yes, frosting. The final defense of the dying. Katniss: You're not going to die. Peeta: Says who? Katniss: Says me. We're on the same team now, you know. Peeta: (Opens eyes.) So, I heard. Nice of you to find what's left of me. Katniss: (Giving him a drink from her water bottle.) Did Cato cut you? Peeta: Left leg. Up high. Katniss: Let's get you in the stream, wash you off so I can see what kind of wounds you've got. Peeta: Lean down a minute first. Need to tell you something. Katniss bends down. Peeta: (Whispering.) Remember, we're madly in love, so it's all right to kiss me anytime you feel like it. Katniss: (Laughing.) Thanks, I'll keep it in mind. Fades out. Fades in to different spot near the stream. Katniss and Peeta sit on the bank. Peeta is relatively cleaned up and has a patch of fabric removed from his pant leg over his thigh. Peeta has a nasty wound on his thigh. Peeta: Pretty awful, huh? Katniss: (Shrugs.) So-so. You should see some of the people they bring my mother from the mines. First thing is to clean it well. (pours water over his leg) Why don't we give it some air and then... Peeta: And then you'll patch it up? Katniss: That's right. In the meantime, we're going to have to experiment some. Katniss applies Tracker Jacker leaves. Peeta: Katniss? (Mouths, “How about that kiss?”) Katniss bursts out laughing. Peeta: Something wrong? Katniss: I... I'm no good at this. I'm not my mother. I've no idea what I'm doing and I hate pus. Euh! Euuuh! Peeta: How do you hunt? Katniss: Trust me. Killing things is much easier than this. Although for all I know, I am killing you. Peeta: Could you speed it up a little? Katniss: No. Shut up and eat your pears. Peeta: What next, Dr. Everdeen? Katniss: Maybe I'll put some of the burn ointment on it. I think it helps with infection anyway. And wrap it up? Peeta: Whatever, sweetheart. Fades out. Fades in to similar spot. Katniss: (Shaking him awake.) Peeta, we've got to go now.

Peeta: Go? Go where? Katniss: Away from here. Downstream maybe. Somewhere we can hide you until you're stronger. Come along, you can do this. Katniss helps him up and leads Peeta to the cave. She covers the floor with pine needles, unrolls the sleeping bag and tucks Peeta into it. Peeta: Katniss, thanks for finding me. Katniss: You would have found me if you could. Peeta: Yes. Look, if I don't make it back— Katniss: Don't talk like that. I didn't drain all that pus for nothing. Peeta: I know. But just in case I don't— Katniss: No, Peeta, I don't even want to discuss it. Katniss places her fingers on Peeta's lips to quiet him. Peeta: But I— Katniss kisses him (stage kiss). She breaks away and pulls the edge of the sleeping bag up. Katniss: You're not going to die. I forbid it. All right? Peeta: (Whispering.) All right. Katniss steps outside. Parachute floats down. Katniss grabs it and unties the parcel, discovering a pot of broth. She stares at it, then picks it up and walks quickly back into the cave. Katniss: Peeta! Peeta, look what Haymitch has sent you. Camera shot drifts upward to the sky. Fade out.

Scene 20: Characters: Katniss, Peeta, voice-over of Claudius Templesmith. Setting: Woods near the cave. Costumes: Arena clothes. You were worried about me? Have you taken a look at yourself lately? Peeta: I thought Cato and Clove might have found you. They like to hunt at night. Katniss: Clove? Which one is that? Peeta: The girl from District Two. She's still alive, right? Katniss: Yes, there's just them and us and Thresh and Foxface. That's what I nicknamed the girl from Five. How do you feel? Peeta: Better than yesterday. This is an enormous improvement over the mud. Clean clothes and medicine and a sleeping bag... and you. Katniss: (Reaches out to touch his cheek. Peeta catches her hand and presses it to his lips.) No more kisses for you until you've eaten. Peeta: You didn't sleep. Katniss: I'm all right. Peeta: Sleep now. I'll keep watch. I'll wake you if anything happens... Katniss, you can't stay up forever.

Katniss: All right. But just for a few hours. Then you wake me. Katniss lies down on the sleeping bag, one hand on her bow. Peeta: Go to sleep. Fade out Open on a tight shot of Katniss's closed eyes, zoom out. Daytime. Katniss: (Opening her eyes and sitting up.) Peeta, you were supposed to wake me after a couple of hours. Peeta: For what? Nothing's going on here. Besides, I like watching you sleep. You don't scowl. Improves your looks a lot. Katniss scowls and Peeta grins. She moves closer and unwraps his bandaged leg. It's much worse. He now has blood poisoning. Katniss: (Unsteadily.) Well, there's more swelling, but the pus is gone. Peeta: I know what blood poisoning is, Katniss. Even if my mother isn't a healer. Katniss: You're just going to have to outlast the others, Peeta. They’ll cure it back at the Capitol when we win. Peeta: Yes, that’s a good plan.

Trumpets blare (sound affect). Claudius Templesmith: Greetings and congratulations, final six tributes! You are all invited to a feast at the Cornucopia at dawn. Now hold on. Some of you may already be declining my invitation. But this is no ordinary feast. Each of you needs something desperately. Each of one will find that something in a backpack, marked with your district number, at the Cornucopia at dawn. Think hard about refusing to show up. For some of you, this will be your last chance. Peeta: No. You’re not risking your life for me. Katniss: Who said I was? Peeta: So, you’re not going? Katniss: Of course, I’m not going. Give me some credit. Do you think I’m running into some free-for-all against Cato and Clove and Thresh? Don’t be stupid. I’ll let them fight it out, we’ll see who’s in the sky tomorrow night and work out a plan from there. Peeta: You’re such a bad liar, Katniss. I don’t know how you’ve survived this long. (Mimicking Katniss.) Well, there’s more swelling, but the pus is gone. Of course, I’m not going. (Resumes regular voice.) Never gamble at cards. You’ll lose your last coin. Katniss: (Angrily.) All right, I am going, and you can’t stop me! Peeta: I can follow you. At least partway. I may not make it to the Cornucopia, but if I’m yelling your name, I bet someone can find me. And then I’ll be dead for sure. Katniss: You won’t get a hundred yards on that leg. Peeta: Then I’ll drag myself. You go and I’m going, too. Katniss: What am I supposed to do? Sit here and watch you die? Peeta: I won’t die. I promise. If you promise not to go. Katniss: (Pretending to relent.) Then you have to do what I say. Drink your water, wake me when I tell you, and eat every bite of the soup no matter how disgusting it is! Peeta: Agreed. Is it ready? Katniss: Wait here. Katniss goes down to the stream and stares at the water. The parachute floats down and she grabs it, unwraps it, and gapes at the tiny vial. She uncorks the vial and sniffs it. Katniss: (Whispers.) Sleep syrup… Fades out. Fades in quickly to shot of Katniss entering the cave. Katniss carries the sugarberry treat. Katniss: I’ve brought you a treat. I found a new patch of berries a little farther downstream. Peeta: (Taking a mouthful.) They’re very sweet.

Katniss: (Giving him more.) Yes, they’re sugar berries. My mother makes jam from them. Haven’t you ever had them before? Peeta: No. But they taste familiar. Sugar berries? Katniss: Well, you can’t get them in the market much, they only grow wild. Peeta: They’re sweet as syrup… Syrup. (His eyes widen in understanding.) Katniss clamps her hand over his mouth, forcing him to swallow instead of spit. Peeta loses consciousness. Katniss wipes a stray berry off his chin. Katniss: Who can’t lie, Peeta? Fades out.

Scene 21: Characters: Foxface, Clove, Katniss, Thresh, Cato, and Peeta Setting: The cornucopia. There is a table in front of it. Costumes: Arena clothes. Props: Katniss- Bow, sheath of arrows, backpack with district number on it. Clove- Jacket of knifes. Foxface- bags with district numbers on it, backpack. ThreshBackpacks with District 2 and 11, rock. Hair: Katniss- Braid. Clove- Ponytail. Thresh- normal. Foxface- ponytail. Cato- normal. Peeta-normal. Makeup: Katniss- Cut on forehead in action. Clove- Dented skull in action. Fades in. Foxface darts out of cornucopia and grabs a backpack with a 5 on it, then darts off. Katniss sprints for table. Clove throws a knife that whizzes by Katniss’ right ear. She deflects it with her bow. Katniss sends arrow at Clove’s heart but Clove turns and gets hit in her upper left arm. Clove pulls the arrow from her arm and looks at the wound. Katniss keeps moving and gets another arrow ready. Once she gets to the table she slips the orange pack on her arm and gets hit by a knife right above her right eyebrow, which sends blood down into her mouth and blinds her right eye. She aims her arrow and it misses. Clove slams into her and knocks her down, pinning Katniss down with her knees. Clove: Where’s your boyfriend, District 12? Still hanging on? Katniss: He’s out there now. Hunting Cato. (Screams.) Peeta! Clove slams her fist into Katniss’ windpipe, then scans the area. Clove: Liar. He’s nearly dead. Cato knows where he cut him. You’re probably got him strapped up in some tree while you try to keep his heart going. What’s in the pretty little backpack? That medicine for Lover Boy? Too bad he’ll never get it. Clove opens jacket and selects knife with a curved blade. Clove: I promised Cato if he let me have you, I’d give the audience a good show (Katniss struggles.) Forget it, District 12. We’re going to kill you. Just like we did your pathetic little ally… What was her name? The one who hopped around in the trees? Rue? Well, first Rue, then you, and then we will let nature take care of Lover Boy. How does that sound? Now, where to start? (Carelessly wipe away blood from Katniss’ wound. Tilts her face back and forth. Katniss tries to bite Clove’s hand but Clove pulls her by her hair back down.) I think… I think we’ll start with your mouth. (Katniss clamps teeth together. Clove teasingly traces the outside of Katniss lips with the tip of the blade.) Yes, I don’t think you’ll have much use for your lips anymore. Want to blow lover boy one last kiss? (Katniss spits blood and saliva at Clove’s face. Clove gets mad.) All right, then. Let’s get started. Clove starts to cut Katniss, but gets ripped off by Thresh. Thresh picks up clove and flips her around then slams her on the groud. Thresh: What’d you do to that little girl? You kill her? Clove: (Scrambles backwards on all fours.) No! No, it wasn’t me! Thresh: You said her name. I heard you. You kill her? You cut her up like you were going to cut up this girl here? Clove: No, no, I-- (Clove sees stone and loses it.) Cato! Cato! Cato: (In the distance.) Clove! Thresh slams clove in the head with rock. Clove lets out moan and breathes rapidly as she dies. Thresh goes to kill Katniss, stone is raised.

Thresh: What’d she mean? About Rue being your ally? Katniss: We teamed up. Blew up the supplies. I tried to save her, I did. But he got there first. District 1. Thresh: And you killed him? Katniss: Yes. I killed him. And I buried her in flowers. And I sang her to sleep. Thresh: To sleep? Katniss: To death. I sang to her until she died. Your district… they sent me bread. Do it fast, okay, Thresh? Thresh: (Lowers rock. Points at Katniss accusingly.) Just this one time, I let you go. For the little girl. You and me, we’re even then. No more owed. You understand? ( Katniss nods.) Cato: (Still distant.) Clove! Thresh: You better run now, Fire Girl. Katniss flips over and digs her feet in the ground. Katniss, once in woods, looks back, and sees Thresh with big backpacks vanishing over the plain. She sees Cato with spear in hand, kneeling besides Clove, holding her hand and begging her to stay with him. Katniss crashes into trees and wipes away blood that is pouring into her eye. She loads an arrow. Then she takes Rue’s socks and puts them on her forehead, they are soaked in minutes. When she gets to the cave she opens her bag and jams the needle in Peeta’s arm. Then she blacks out. Blackout.
