Students in EHOVE’s Firefighter programs in the high school and adult education use real equipment in their training. Thanks to a donation from the Huron Township Trustees earlier this month, those students have another vital piece to learn the critical hands-on skills that firefighters need. Trustees donated a Gruman Pumper/Tanker which will allow EHOVE instructors to perform a variety of new training tasks, which were not possible with the previous situation of only one truck. Thanks to the donation, instructors are now able to train students in scenarios that include pumper to pumper relays, attack engine, rescue engine, water shuttles and more. Huron Fire Department has been a contributing department to EHOVE’s Firefighter training programs for several years through allowing students to utilize equipment to supplement practical skills sessions for years. “We’ve had a long standing relationship with Huron Fire Department when it comes to training and donated equipment,” said EHOVE Fire Training Coordinator Doug Nash. “For several years, since at least as long as I’ve been at EHOVE, they’ve been supportive. It’s a huge benefit for departments to have firefighters trained right and on the right equipment.” Nash says that another major benefit of having two training trucks is that multiple classes can

Local Charities Gets Lots of Fish
The weekend of May 19th the city of Huron was invaded by 80 professional fishing teams from all over the Midwest and Canada. The Cabala’s Master Walleye Circuit tournament came to town. Those 80 teams caught a total weight of over 5000 lbs of walleye.. What was really neat is that the fish were donated to local organizations that help with feeding the needy. The Huron Helping Hand Food Pantry located in Lighthouse AG Church in Huron, Christ Community Meal located in the First Presbyterian Church in Huron and Victory Temple Soup Kitchen in Sandusky divided 2000 lbs. of walleye filets. Pictured are over 700 lbs of filets that were processed by the Huron Helping Hand Food Pantry volunteers to be given out to those in need. FishHuronOhio, the organization that helped to bring the tournament to Huron paid for the cleaning of the fish. So this was a true donation to the charities.

“A Taste of Wine & Roses” has become one of Huron’s treasured summertime events in the past six years. It’s a chance for neighbors and friends to get together for an evening of sampling awardwinning Ohio wines and delectable gourmet treats. This year the Huron Chamber of Commerce and Barnes Nursery, co-sponsors of the Friday, June 22, event are taking the things up a notch, creating“A Taste of Wine, Roses& Tapas.” The Spanish word means small plates, but they will be filled many times over with “a taste of ” creations by several well-known Huron chefs. Guests will receive tickets that can be used for the wide array of foods, sips of the fruit-of-the-vine from the area’s award-winning wineries and premium, locally-roasted coffee from Storm Mountain Roasting Co. The gardens at the nursery will be ablaze in their full summer colors and a huge, picturesque white tent will be filled with vases of roses in rainbow hues, sitting atop white linen tablecloths. Just a few of the many luscious items being served are: sea scallops with crab mango chutney, hickory smoked beef brisket, salmon topped with fresh-roasted pineapple, and a salad topped with rose petals and a champagne dressing. Watch the Hometown News in upcoming weeks for more details on this unique menu being provided the folks at Angry Bull, Marconi’s, Mesenburg’s Creating Catering, The Kitchen’s Bounty and Storm Mountain Coffee Roasters. June is Ohio Wine Month and area wineries are making their mark in the U.S. wine industry. With each new vintage, they garner more and more awards. Samples, along with bottled wine for sale, will be provided by Chateau Tebeau of Helena, Oh; Firelands Winery of Sandusky; Matus Winery of Wakeman, Mon Ami of Catawba Island and Paper Moon Vineyards of Vermilion. A group of friends can reserve a table for eight with signage and they will receive two bottles of wine and a mention in the program, all for $200.

Mark Twain and the Oral Tradition
Mark Twain and the Oral Tradition by Daniel Slife will be June 13 at Huron Public Library. Many were blessed with English teachers who, when covering the works of American literary legend Mark Twain stressed the importance of regional accent and vernacular in Twain’s idiosyncratic prose. It’s a presentation that must ultimately be spoken totruly be heard. The rich, layered language of Twain will come alive at Huron Public Library on Thursday, June 13 at 7 p.m. as actor and Mark Twain impersonator Dave Ehlertbrings Samuel Langhorne Clemens into the 21st century through a tapestry of the poet’s writings and speeches. Professor of Twain studies at St. Mary’s College in Maryland, Ben Click sees in Ehlert’s performance the marks of craft and novelty. “What I found most refreshing is that [he] clearly [has] absorbed the essence of Twain’s words… and found refreshing contexts in which to put them.” Twain’s prose has long been noted (criticized and praised) for its attempts to paint a vivid portrait of 19th century American life by connecting the ground of reality to the written word through acute attention to the vernacular and colloquialisms of our diverse culture. Sometimeslabeled a racist, sometimes a humanist, it cannot be denied that Twain captured through his idiosyncratic lens a distinct counter-cultural snap shot of perhaps the most turbulent era in American history. On June 13, Ehlert will bring Twain’s wit, humor and wisdom back to life for the entire family. Please mark your calendar and join us for this very special event. The program will be held in Meeting Room A at the Huron Public Library.

A Summer Of Music And Laughter!
Ohio’s oldest continuing summer theater, The Huron Playhouse has announced the bill of plays for its 64th consecutive season, which runs Tuesday through Saturday evenings, June 26th through July 28th. Curtain time for all productions is 8 pm in the McCormick School auditorium on Ohio Street in Huron. Bye Bye Birdie, book by Michael Stewart with music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Lee Adams, will run June 26 – June 30. One of the most captivating ‘period’ musical shows of our time (originally presented by The Huron Playhouse 50 years ago!), Bye Bye Birdie tells the story of an Elvistype rock and roll singer about to be inducted into the army. This musical will leave you singing and dancing all the way home!! Fun entertainment for the entire family! The Fox on the Fairway, a tribute from Ken Ludwig (author of Lend Me a Tenor and others) to the great farces of the 1930s and 1940s, will run July 3 – July 7. The Fox on the Fairway takes audiences on a hilarious romp filled with mistaken identities, slamming doors, and over-the-top romantic shenanigans; it’s a furiously paced comedy that recalls the Marx Brothers’ classics. The Drowsy Chaperone – A Musical Within a Comedy, book by Bob Martin and Don Mckellar with music and lyrics by List Lambert and Greg Morrison, will perform July 10 – July 14. A rare combination of unprecedented originality and blinding talent, a winner of 5 Tony Awards, it has been hailed as one of the wittiest, craziest shows ever to hit Broadway! Delightful, sparkling entertainment! Greater Tuna, by Jason Williams, Joe Sears and Ed Howard, will be offered July 17 – July 21. This long running Off-Broadway hit…a hilarious sendup of small town morals and mores... will feature long-time Playhouse favorites (as directors and as actors), Geoff Stephenson and Jim Williams. Come enjoy! You may even wish to ‘place a donation bet’ on whether they’ll make all the costume changes!! The closing production of the 2012 season brings to our stage one of the ‘best musicals of the 20th century’ according to many critics: Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel, July 24 – July 28. Such now-classic songs as “If I Loved You,” “June Is Bustin’ Out All Over,” “Soliloquy,” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” attest to the longevity and power of the musical score. A large cast of actors, singers, and dancers will grace our stage to lead audiences to enter the world of, and truly experience the power of, Carousel. For ticket information and reservations, contact The Playhouse after June 13th at (419)433-4744 or anytime by mail: The Huron Playhouse, P O Box 487, Huron, Ohio 44839. Money-saving Season Passes as well as individual show tickets are available.

EHOVE students shine at SkillsUSA
EHOVE students involved in SkillsUSA accomplished plenty at the state competition last month. Skills USA is an association of trades and industry students. Skills USA allows students to participate in competitive events, fund-raisers, community service projects and social chapter activities. Cosmetology student Chandra Biecheler (Western Reserve) won first place and will be going to Nationals June 22-28 in Kansas City, Mo. “The event was so much fun. What a great learning experience, “ said Biecheler. “We did a Tech Prep showcase for human services in the cosmetology field, and we partnered up with Snipper’s Salon in Monroeville helping them to promote facials,” said Biecheler. Students in the Cosmetology program who are a part of SkillsUSA had an open house, made t-shirts, buttons and business cards to help Snipper’s Salon advertise their facial product. “We learned different business techniques, which is good for when we enter the workforce. You have to be very open-minded in this career. Creativity plays a big part for cosmetology,” said Biecheler. EHOVE’s Forensic students Dylan Shea (Vermilion HS) and Tasha Cromwell (Edison HS) also attended the competition for SkillsUSA. Shea and Cromwell also won first place and will be headed to Kansas City, Mo in June as well for Nationals. “We did a Tech Prep showcase for public safety, and had to come up with some kind of idea to show law enforcement how to communicate with those affected by autism,” said Shea. “We participated in a crime scene investigation,” said Cromwell. There was a team of three. I was the sketch artist. We competed against 16 teams.” Cromwell and her team had to search a room as if it were a crime scene and identify any evidence. Students had their own reasons for participating in this competition. “Participating in this competition will look good on my resume, college and job applications,” said Biecheler. “My sister has Asperger’s disease, and I wanted to further educate myself and others on how to communicate with individuals who have this syndrome, so there’s no conflict,” said Shea. “It’s in my career field. Being a part of a team was a fun experience,” said Cromwell. Students agree that the SkillsUSA competitions relevant to students’ career training. “I plan on being a cop before going into homicide. This has made me more confident and more aware,” said Shea. “I want to be a forensic anthropologist,” said Cromwell. I have learned so much about sketching through SkillsUSA. This has also helped me with my communication skills and leadership aspect of everything.”

marY StraYer, maSter gardener, author Many people are asking which perennials are best for sun, and dry summers. It’s no fun to have to be watering every day or two, and when you have a lot of flower beds, it becomes impossible. One of the first perennial I would suggest are daylilies. They come in almost any color besides pure white, live long, can last a lifetime, require water only in drought, and can bloom from mid-April through to frost. Lemon lily is an old fashioned antique lily, and is the first to bloom. You would have to look online for a grower, but well worth having. Many other lilies are available for late blooms, and there are repeat bloomers available now to the public. Shasta daisies, Leucanthemum x superbum, are also long term bloomers, and if deadheaded will continue bloom all summer. Some grow to 36” tall, while others maintain the 24” mark. They like full sun, and average sun, and only need to be watered in drought. Russian Sage, Perovskia atriplicifolia, which actually comes from Asia, is very long lived, and extremely easy to grow. It can grow to 48” tall x3’ wide, has silver leaves, and tiny purple/blue flowers that attracts hummingbirds. Deer avoid this plant. Recently a miniature Russian Sage has been developed, and again, it can be located online only for now. It grows to 24”, but has the same leaf color and flower description. Both grow in well drained soil. For the last 10 years or so, perennial geraniums have been strongly introduced

into our USDA Zone 5. They do best in full sun, but survive in part shade. They are long flowering, and won’t tolerate standing in water. Many companies now offer selections of 5-10 different varieties and they too can be found at local greenhouses, big box stores, and of course some located on the internet. This year a new pure red perennial geranium names “PacKate” was introduced, and it was meant for hanging baskets, but will survive planted in our gardens as well. For the last few years many rudbeckia have been introduced and will grow locally. There are species with pink and green leaves, pure red leaves, and of course ‘Arc Angel” which is pure white. All in all over 23 varieties have been introduced this year alone. Most grow to 18” high, spread nicely, and broom from late May until first heavy frost. They love full sun, and well drained soil, and are drought resistant. Agastache is a relatively new introduction in our area, and there are many colors coming out. It is a very touch growing perennial, and hummers absolutely love it. It is important with this plant to read the ticket that comes with it, as some require much more water than others. Most plants are tall, 30-48”, spread nicely, and love full sun. These are available at local nurseries and greenhouses, and worth the time to brighten your gardens. Have fun adding new plants and happy gardening.

Schools
Where the heart is
EHOVE Forensic Science student Dylan Shea (Vermilion HS) wrote a compelling story, which caught the attention of many people as he wrote a 15-page essay for his application for the Firelands Positive People scholarship. Firelands 17th annual Positive People Scholarship program took place last month at Kalahari. Shea has certainly had some extreme and very personal hardships, which was the focus of his essay. That essay caught the attention of the judges, who awarded him a $3,000 scholarship award. “This is a big help and will help pay off tuition at Tiffin University,” said Shea. Forensic Science Instructor Kelly Bodkin is very proud of Dylan’s success. “He’s shared his story with me before and to see his accomplishments from last year to this year is amazing,” said Bodkin. “He’s been more successful than most kids. He has great leadership abilities, and he is going to achieve many great things due to his commitment to be a different person.” Shea is a role model for kids, and stays very involved at EHOVE and in the community. He participates in SkillsUSA, Mock Trial, Project Ignition, Jump Start Program at the Vermilion Police Department, plays football, Shakespeare contest, G.L.A.S.S. and takes the leadership position in the Forensic Science program at EHOVE. Dylan is also an EHOVE blogger at www.EHOVEconnection.com, where he has shared his senior year experiences through written blogs and firsthand videos. Shea says was very shocked when he won the scholarship. When his name was called, Dylan walked to the front of the room, and gave a speech from his heart. He left many people in the audience in tears, as he shared his story and positive attitude about life. “Keep going for your dreams,” said Shea. “People said I was an inspiration. If you are going to let your past control your future, then you are not as strong as you think you are.” Shea has completed his time at EHOVE, where he was studying Forensic Science. Students in this program learn how to process crime scenes, conduct investigations, analyze evidence and understand criminal psychology. As part of his training, he earned certifications in 911 Telecommunications

Selected For Leadership
One area high school sophomore has been selected to attend the Ohio West Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership Seminar. He/she will join more than 200 young leaders representing as many high schools from throughout northwestern Ohio. The seminar will be held June 7-10 in Ada, Ohio at Ohio Northern University. Selected to attend HOBY is: Abby Wiseman, Huron High School. Students are chosen based upon demonstrated leadership and potential for continued leadership growth. HOBY Leadership Seminars bring together a select group of high school sophomores with groups of distinguished leaders in business, government, education, and other professions to discuss present and future issues. The goal is to provide the youth with a stimulating forum for learning about critical issues while broadening their understanding of their leadership potential and quest for self-development. Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership was established in 1958 by the popular actor, Hugh O’Brian, following a visit to Africa, where he was inspired by a meeting with Dr. Albert Schweitzer. “One of the things Schweitzer said to me was that the most important thing in education was to teach young people to think for themselves,” O’Brian said. “From that inspiration, and with the support of others who believe in youth and the American dream, I started HOBY to seek out, recognize, and develop outstanding leadership potential among our nation’s youth.”

Dispatching, OSHA, HAZMAT, Homeland Security, Evidence and DNA Handling, and CPR and First Aid. Shea plans to continue his training by attending Tiffin University to study Forensic Psychology with a minor in Homeland Security, then attend EHOVE Adult Education Police Academy after graduation. He plans a career in law enforcement with a final goal of working for the F.B.I.

EHOVE Medical Assistant students working with their visitors (L to R) Brittany Ballard of Clyde, Amanda Heydinger of Willard, Sylvia Hendricks of Norwalk and Jacob Bodi with other male visitor

A Family Affair
EHOVE’S Medical Assistant Adult Education Program recently participated in a fun Friends and Family Night event. This event allows students in the medical assistant program to bring either a friend or family member to class for the evening to experience different skills and become educated on what the students have been learning. This practice will aid in preparation for their required practicum of 200 hours hands-on in various physician offices. Examples of skills students are learning include: blood pressure checks, routine venipuncture, throat swab, urinalysis, vital signs, wound dressings, first aid, injections and blood draw. Medical Assistant Director and Coordinator Tonya Lloyd is in charge of putting together the annual Friends and Family Night, and has been doing so for the last three years. “This is very important for my students because it helps them to be prepared for their practicum, and it helps my students understand patient education,” said Lloyd. Friends and Family Night at EHOVE included a total of 15 stations. Each student in this program had six minutes at each station to explain various topics they have been learning throughout this program. Each student started off with his or her own project, then rotated to a different station.

DECA COMPETITION
EHOVE’S Job Training Coordinator Lisa York and students in Marketing Sales and Services program participated in the DECA Competition on April 19 at Glen Oak High School in Canton, OH. Students participated in different competition areas, some included: Interviewing, Community Service, Cash Register, Grocery Shopping, Housekeeping, and Team Decision Making. EHOVE students won 25 trophies for 2nd and 3rd place. “They had a great time. It’s a great opportunity for students to work on their skills,” said York. Students spent a lot of time preparing for this competition. “Students were not obligated to go to this competition,” said York. “They went because they choose to go. We had a total of 9 students participate. They had a lot of fun,” she said.
