Huron Parks & Rec to Offer Summer Day Camps
By Lisa Yako Some children thrive on the routine that they experience during the school year. Hence, the lazy days of summer provide a dilemma for these children. Other children simply yearn for fun activities that engage them during the summer. Hence, in an effort to fill the need for fun and structured summer activities, Huron Parks and Recreation will be offering a new program of 6 weeklong day camps that will run from June 24 through August 2. The camp program was developed by Parks and Recreation, Brian Croucher. In their inaugural year, the camps will run for 6 weeks, but eventually the goal is to expand the camp season to 8 to 10 weeks. The camps are geared towards students ages 6 through 12. The students will be broken up into two groups- Adventure Camp for ages 6 through 9 and Explorer Camp for ages 9 through 12. Each week-long camp will be organized around a theme. A variety of themes were chosen so as to appeal to children of varying interests. The themes for this year include: Jump into Summer, Wild for Nature, Water World, Explore the Arts, Sport it Up, and Super Science. All of the camps will be held at Shawnee Elementary School, but each Friday will include a field trip that is related to the week’s theme. School buses owned by the Huron City Schools will be used to transport the campers to their field trip destinations. As an example, the Explore the Arts camp will be run in conjunction with the Huron Playhouse and likely will involve visits from some of the actors. The field trip for that particular week will be to the Playhouse. Croucher stressed that these camps will be different from many other camps because they will be highly interactive. The camps will begin at 8:30 AM and end at 3:30 PM daily and cost $110 per week for Huron residents. Parents have the option of extending the day from 7:30 AM until 4:30 PM for an additional cost of $15 per week. The camps will be facilitated by a director and will be run by camp counselors. There will be no more than a 10 to 1 ratio of students to counselors. Enrollment in the camps will be limited to 20 to 30 students per age group per week. Registration for all of the camps is currently being accepted. For more information on these camps or other programs, including Safety Town and Summer Youth Programs, visit the Department of Parks and Recreation web site at www.cityofhuron.org or call 419-433-8487.

15th Chamber Lighthouse Race Route Will Circle McBride Arboretum
For nearly two decades, the Huron Chamber of Commerce has sponsored an annual rite of Spring here in Huron. The 15th annual Lighthouse Races help everyone shed the winter blahs and sprint into Spring. Once again runners in the 10-mile race will follow a scenic route that will take them out to BGSU Firelands campus and through the picturesque James H. McBride Arboretum there. Also planned on Saturday, May 4, will be the traditional Lighthouse 5K race and the Kalahari Kids Fun Run. The 5K race will follow the same course as in previous years. These races draw a crowd of several hundred runners each year. Plants and trees in the arboretum should be in full bloom, providing the long distance runners a close-up view of the campus, located on the corner of Rye Beach and Boos roads. Kalahari Waterpark Resorts is sponsoring a Kids’ 1-K Fun Run for children up to 12 years of age. Each child will receive some sort of award, refreshments and prizes. “We are very grateful for the generous support of the folks at Kalahari and our other major benefactors: Arby’s, Firelands Regional Medical Center, Comfort Inn River’s Edge and The Gym,” said Sheila Ehrhardt, director of the Huron Chamber of Commerce. Funds raised from these races in the past 14 years have been used to provide thousands of dollars in scholarships for graduating Huron High School seniors. A copy of the registration form can be found at this website The first 150 participants to pre-register will receive a commemorative t-shirt, lots of refreshments, age group and overall awards, and will have the chance to win some great door prizes. Start time for the 5K Run is 9 a.m. and the 10-Milers will set out at 9:15 a.m. In order for those racing to cheer on the aspiring young runners in their families, the Kids’ Fun will start at 8:30 a.m. All of the racers will take off from and return to Huron High School Memorial Stadium. For the fit and fearless, registrations will be accepted there from 7:45 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. in the stadium locker rooms. Runners have come to look forward to this race and with the picturesque 10-mile route it will be a whole new challenge to runners. Awards will be given to the top overall male and female finishers and to the top three in each age division. Age groups include: 13 and under, and 14-19, (5K only) 19 and under, (10-miler only) 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70 and over. So put on your running shoes and head to Huron to compete in the Huron Chamber of Commerce’s Lighthouse 10-Mile and 5K Run. For information, phone 419.433.5700 or e-mail [email protected].

Huron’s Strategic Location
By Lisa Yako Stand on any shoreline along Lake Erie, and you just might be overwhelmed by the vastness of our Great Lake. Yet, our location on the shores of Lake Erie offers Huron far more than just beauty and recreational opportunities. The most valuable resource that our location affords us is clean water. Moreover, that resource demands responsible management at home and at the municipal and governmental levels. Huron is fortunate in that we have this amazing water source and a water filtration plant to make that water potable. Nevertheless, most people take this precious resource for granted. When we turn on our faucet, we expect clean, cheap water to flow endlessly. In fact, Americans use far more water per capita than anyone else in the world. Clean water is a vital resource that is scarce in most other countries around the world. In his 2011 book, Water: The Epic Struggle for Wealth, Power and Civilization, journalist Steven Solomon argues that water is surpassing oil as the world’s scarcest critical resource. Thus, Solomon suggests that future wars might be fought over water and not oil. Amazingly, according to www.water.org, the “lack of access to clean water and sanitation kills children at a rate equivalent to a jumbo jet crashing every four hours, and approximately one in nine people, or 780 million people, lack access to an improved water source.” Huron residents truly are fortunate. Over the last five years, the City of Huron has completed a major overhaul of its water filtration plant. Namely, city employees have modernized the plant, identified and repaired water main leaks, paid off debt, replaced water meters and acquired the capability to automatically read them. Despite all of these improvements, water rates for residents within the city limits have not increased since 2007. Further, for the past 34 years, the City of Huron has had an agreement with Erie County to sell water, thus making available to others this abundant resource at our doorstep. Specifically, Erie County is the Huron’s largest customer and accounts for approximately 40% of the water consumed. Yet, with the improvements to the water filtration plant, the city now has a surplus of water that it is seeking to sell. If a new agreement to sell more water can be reached with Erie County, water rates for Huron residents could actually drop. This is a stark contrast to what is happening around the United States. A 2012 study conducted by USA TODAY found that over the past 12 years residential water rates have more than doubled in one of four localities. Further, rates for all of our other utilities continue to increase at a steady rate. In a series of articles over the next few weeks, I will explore the benefits that Huron’s water filtration plant provides to city residents, the hopes and aspirations that city officials have for the future of the plant, the potential for changes in the city’s relationship with the county, etc. I welcome your questions and comments.

Spring Outing for Huron Garden Club

On Friday, April 26,2013, the Huron Garden Club will car pool from the First Huron Presbyterian Church, 225 Main St. to Wooster, Ohio. Departures from the church parking lot will be no later than 9:30 a.m. Members are advised to be ready to leave at that time. Club Members are looking forward to a trip to Quailcrest Garden Center,, 2810 Armstrong Road, Wooster. The Center is especially noted for its unusual plantings and arrangements. Lunch will be included in the selfguided tour of the outdoor and indoor planted areas. Co-ordinators for the trip are Judy Slocum 440-8392269 and Dulcie of Quailcrest 330-345-6772. Due to a general lack of proper maintenance, historic structures often come with a host of unforeseen problems. Nonetheless, the integrity with which these structures were built and the quality of the craftsmanship is often unparalleled in today’s world. If you own an older house or building or are simply interested in the preservation of historic structures, you can gain valuable information by attending the upcoming Building Doctor Clinic in Vermilion. The Ohio Historical Society’s Building Doctors are specifically trained to teach those who own historic structures how to recognize and solve some of the most common problems associated with maintaining those structures and how to make informed decisions about repairs and improvements. According to the Ohio Historical Society’s web site, “Each Building Doctor clinic begins with a free seminar on topics like peeling paint and failing plaster, wet basements, deteriorating masonry, windows, wood issues, and bringing buildings built before 1955 up to date without sacrificing historic integrity. On the following day, the Building Doctors make the rounds of ailing buildings within five miles of the city center where the seminar is held to examine problems and prescribe

cures.” The site visits are free, but only about 10 inspections will be performed. Hence, it is imperative that interested parties register for the seminar and then make an appointment with the Building Doctor for a site visit. The Building Doctors will visit any pre-1955 building including schools, churches, factories, stores, offices, farm buildings, and homes. The Building Doctors only give six programs per year. On April 11, they will be visiting Vermilion and presenting their program at the Ritter Public Library at 7:00 PM. Site visits will take place on Friday, April 12 from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM. Registration for the seminar and the site visits is can be completed online at www.ohpo.org/gis/ BDindex.htm or by calling 1-800-499-2470. The Building Doctor Program is being co-sponsored by Main Street Vermilion, Inc. and the Sandusky/Erie County Community Foundation. Further information about the program in Vermilion should be directed to Linda Tallitsch at 440963-0772. If you cannot attend the program in Vermilion, the Building Doctors will be visiting Port Clinton in September. Alternately, the Building Doctors will make a ‘Virtual Site Visit’ if you have one or two technical questions that you would like to ask. Questions should be directed to the Building Doctors at [email protected].

Taxes
From Betty at H&R Block

Have You Filed Your Income Tax Returns Yet?
The April 15th deadline is fast approaching. And what a crazy year this has been! Congress waited until the week of the New Year’s Holiday to pass legislation extending many commonly used tax breaks. The IRS delayed the opening of the tax filing season to January 22, and even then many forms were not available for filing. Some forms could not be filed until early in March. Many taxpayers are asking “So, based on all these delays, is the tax filing season being extended?” The general answer is “no” . April 15th is the deadline to timely file your income tax return. However, you always have the option to file for an automatic extension. This will give you until October 15th to file your return and still be considered timely filed. This is an extension of time to file your return, but not an extension of time to pay if you have a balance due. At H&R Block, we can file that extension for you electronically…..and it is free of charge. Just stop by or call the office in Huron for assistance. The Internal Revenue Service did recently announce that they have provided late-payment penalty relief to individuals and businesses requesting a tax-filing extension because they are attaching to their returns any of the forms that couldn’t be filed until after January. The relief applies to the late-payment penalty, normally 0.5 percent per month, charged on tax payments made after the regular filing deadline. This relief applies to any of the forms delayed until February or March, primarily due to the January enactment of the American Taxpayer Relief Act. Interest still applies to any tax payment made after the original deadline. If you have any questions about how this applies to you, H&R Block can help.

Warren A. Schmidt
Apr 16, 1947 - Apr 1, 2013
Warren A. Schmidt, 65, of Huron, died Monday, April 1, 2013, in Fisher Titus Medical Center, Norwalk. He was born April 16, 1947, in Evergreen Park, Ill., and had been a resident of Huron since 1974 coming from Sandusky. He graduated from Sandusky High School in 1965. He worked as an operating engineer for Local 18 out of Cleveland for 30 years, retiring in 2006. Letter to the Editor
As former members and Presidents of the Huron Board of Education, we are distraught at the failure of the majority of the current board to carry out the primary function for which they were elected, namely to meet their fiduciary obligations to the taxpayers and students of the district. With the board majority ignoring the unequivocal recommendations of the Ohio Department of Education referee, the district now faces a precarious future. School boards have well defined legal steps that must be followed to terminate any employee during their contract. The dysfunctional process that this board majority has used to handle a personnel issue already has resulted in significant financial waste and the diversion of critical resources and energy from the business of education. Of greater concern, these actions have resulted in the alienation and loss of support, financial and otherwise, from key members of the business community and other long-time supporters of the district. Finally, with pending lawsuits and other legal issues, these actions have cast a dark shadow over the financial future of the district, a district that was prospering until the past year. A school district that is financially stable and excels in education is the most important asset for a community to grow and prosper. Our hope is that some responsible citizens in the community will step forward to run for the Board of Education so that the board can begin to undo the damage that has been done and return to the model of excellence for which the district has long been known. Signed, Sharon Barnes, Joseph R. Bransky, Nancy Bulea, Dr. Richard A. Dolbeer, Hannah Lendrum, Dominic (Tike) Majoy, Sally Sprunk

...It’s your choice.

House plant fertilizers contain 3 main nutrients: nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium or potash. The ratio of these three ingredients usually indicated on the label as 3 numbers, such as 5-10-5 or 10-20-10. Commercial fertilizers for house plants come in several forms; liquids, powders, tablets and capsules. Most of these are dissolved and diluted in water for application. Some types are scratched into the soil surface. Tablets and slow release capsules are also placed on the soil surface or just into the soil where they slowly dissolve in normal watering over a period of time. WHATEVER YOU CHOOSE, READ THE LABELS CAREFULLY, AND FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS COMPLETELY. Many indoor gardeners find it beneficial to apply fertilizers more frequently than normal, usually twice as often, but in a much diluted state, usually ½ the recommended dose or slightly less. When you purchase a house plant, look at the tag that comes with it. It will sometimes tell you how often to fertilize. You may also go to the library or go on the internet, and type the name in the browser, and you will find the information you need. A few tricks: • Never apply fertilizer to dry potting mix. Be sure your plant is watered well first. A plant purchased in a store will probably already been fertilized when potted for sale. This potting fertilizer usually lasts for the first 3 months.

• Never fertilize a sick plant. Wait until it has completely recovered before encouraging it to grow. • Most plants rest in the winter months. This is especially true of non-bloomers. Don’t coax them into growth by applying fertilizer. Avoid fertilizers between September and March. Don’t feed dormant plants; wait instead until you see signs of growth. • Never deliberately over-feed your plants. An extra pinch can damage your plant severely. If you find you overfed your plant, sit it in the sink or in the bathtub, and run lukewarm water through it slowly for a minute or so. This will rinse out some of the fertilizer, and stop some of the damage to the plant. Now that you have them successfully fertilized, it is it time to consider when to move them outside. For the most part, nighttime temperatures must be about 50 degrees constantly, not just a few days a week. When temps are right, set the plants out in a protected area, usually in shade for the first few days, and if the plant loves full sun, slowly move it out into the sunshine. This way, they will harden off, or get themselves ready for the brightness and the heat of the sun. Watch your houseplants as they are sitting outside, and any sign of stress, move them back further into the shade again. It’s tricky, but well worth the trouble. Most of all, enjoy your gardens, and your houseplants. Happy Gardening!
