WASHINGTON vs. GEORGIA STATE
Panthers’ Staff Features Five With Husky Ties
web: www. gohuskies. com • twitter: @UW_Football
THE GAME: The Washington football team (3-0) welcomes an unfamiliar opponent with some
familiar faces on its coaching staff this week as Georgia State (1-2) comes to Husky Stadium for a
3:00 p.m. game Saturday. The game will air on the Pac-12 Networks. GSU, in just its fifth year of
playing football and second year in the NCAA Division I FBS, is coached by former UW assistant
Trent Miles and has a total of five members of its staff with Husky ties. After this Saturday, the
Huskies remain at home for a fourth straight Saturday as Stanford visits on Sept. 27.
QUICK SLANTS: Washington shares the national lead for total sacks with 15 ... the UW also
leads the Pac-12 and is 14th in the nation in sacks allowed per game ... senior NT Danny Shelton
became just the fifth Husky ever with four or more sacks in a game with 4.0 vs. EWU ... he was the
first Husky to record four or more sacks in a game since 1989 (Martin Harrison) ... Shelton leads
the nation with 6 sacks ... he also shares the NCAA lead with 7.5 tackles for loss ... senior Hau’oli
Kikaha, who had three sacks vs. Illinois, is fifth in the nation in sacks with 5.0 ... John Ross’ four
touchdowns this season have come from 20, 91, 55 and 75 yards ... Washington had five true
freshmen play in the Hawai’i game: DB Budda Baker, DB Darren Gardenhire, DB Naijiel Hale, WR
Brayden Lenius and PK Tristan Vizcaino ... three more saw action vs. EWU, for a total of eight this
season: DL Will Dissly, DB Sidney Jones and WR Dante Pettis ... thanks to the four straight home
games and a bye week, the Dawgs will go 42 days between road games before taking on Cal in
Berkeley on Oct. 11 ... vs. Hawai’i, John Ross caught a 91-yard TD pass from Jeff Lindquist, the
second-longest pass play in Husky history (Jake Locker to Marcel Reece, 98 yards, 2007, is the
record) ... the 91-yard play happened on the first play of the drive, which tied the UW record for the
longest-ever one-play scoring drive ... prior to the season-opening win at UH, the last time a new
Husky coach won his debut game was in 1993, when Jim Lambright’s Dawgs opened the season
with a win over Stanford ... no Husky coach had ever begun his UW tenure with a road victory ...
Washington hadn’t won a true non-conference road game since the 2007 opener at Syracuse (last
year’s win over Illinois came at Soldier Field, technically a neutral site).
TELEVISION: The Washington-GSU game will air live to a national audience on the Pac-12 Networks
with J.B. Long (play-by-play), Anthony Herron (color) and Ashley Adamson (sidelines) providing the
commentary. The Pac-12 Networks will also show 60-minute replays next week.
RADIO: The Washington IMG College Network, with its flagship station KOMO AM-1000 and FM-
97.7, will carry the live broadcast of every football game on 18 Northwest radio stations. Longtime
play-by-play man Bob Rondeau and color analyst Damon Huard are joined by sideline reporter Elise
Woodward. The UW broadcast of the game will also air on Sirius (93) and XM (203) satellite radio.

THE HEAD COACH: Chris Petersen, who has built a reputation as an of-
fensive innovator who carried the Boise State football program to its high-
est highs, was finally swayed to take on a new challenge when he agreed
to become head coach of the Huskies in December of 2013. Petersen, 49,
the only two-time winner of the Paul “Bear” Bryant Award (2006 and 2009),
compiled an exceptional 92-12 record in his eight seasons as Boise State
head coach (2006-2013), including two unbeaten seasons (13-0 in 2006 and
14-0 in 2009) and two BCS bowl berths. He won five conference titles and
posted a 57-6 record in conference play (WAC from 2006-10 and Mountain
West from 2011-13). Petersen, who also won the Bobby Dodd Coach of the
Year Award in 2010, led the Broncos to 10 or more wins in seven of his eight
seasons and to 12 or more in four straight (2008-11). In 2006, Petersen’s first
season in charge in Boise, he led the Broncos to their first undefeated sea-
son since 1958, when the school was a junior college. The 2006 season was
capped by a 43-42 overtime win over Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl, a game
remembered by many as one of the greatest in bowl-game history. That Boise
team ended the year ranked No. 5 in the final Associated Press top 25 poll.
The following season, the Broncos went 10-3 and finished out of the polls
for what would be the only time in Petersen’s first seven seasons. The 2008
squad went 12-1 and ranked No. 11 in the final top 25, finishing the regular
season undefeated. In 2009, Petersen led the Broncos to their second unde-
feated campaign and another Fiesta Bowl berth. Boise State beat TCU, 17-10,
in Arizona, becoming the first team from a non-BCS conference ever to win
two BCS bowl games. The ‘09 Broncos checked in at No. 4 in the final AP
poll. The 2010 season ended with a 12-1 record, a No. 9 final ranking and
a win in the Las Vegas Bowl, the first of three straight trips to Vegas for
Boise State. In 2011, BSU once again went 12-1, finishing with a No. 8 final
ranking. Last season, Petersen’s team went 11-2 and beat Washington in the
Las Vegas Bowl, good for a No. 18 final ranking. In 2013, Boise State, which
faced Washington in the first game at the newly renovated Husky Stadium,
finished the regular season with an 8-4 record (Petersen came to the UW prior
to the Broncos’ bowl game). Throughout his teams’ unmatched on-field suc-
cess, Petersen also saw his Broncos succeed in the classroom. In 2011, Boise
State was the only school to finish in the top 10 in both major polls and also
receive a Public Recognition Award from the NCAA for finishing in the top 10
percent of the Academic Progress Rate (APR), the second of three straight
such awards for the program. Boise State’s APR was second in the nation in
2011 and 2012 and Petersen was recognized in 2012 for having the best APR
for the two previous years among all FBS coaches. Known for his work with
quarterbacks, Petersen tutored Ryan Dinwiddie, Jared Zabransky and Kellen
Moore at Boise State. Moore set an NCAA record with 50 career wins as a
starting QB while winning three conference player of the year awards. Moore
was the only player ever to record four 3,000-yard seasons in both passing
and total offense. His 142 passing touchdowns were second-most in NCAA
history while his 14,667 career passing yards were fifth-most. He twice led
the nation in passing efficiency and set an NCAA record for season intercep-
tion percentage, throwing just three in 431 attempts in 2009. During his eight
seasons seasons, 51 Broncos earned all-conference honors. Before taking
over as head coach at Boise State, Petersen served as the Broncos’ offensive
coordinator from 2001-05, during which his teams averaged 41.3 points per
game, leading the nation in scoring in both 2002 and 2003. Petersen began
his coaching career in 1987 as freshman coach at his alma mater, UC Davis. In
1989, he became the Aggies’ varsity wide receivers coach. In 1992, Petersen
moved to Pittsburgh, where he was quarterbacks coach. That season, Alex
Van Pelt passes for more than 3,100 yards and 20 touchdowns. In 1993, Pe-
tersen moved back west to take over a QBs coach at Portland State, helping
the Vikings to Division II playoff berths in each of his two seasons. In 1995,
he took a job at Oregon as the receivers coach under Mike Bellotti, a position
he held before moving to Boise as offensive coordinator in 2001. Born in Yuba
City, Calif., on Oct. 13, 1964, Petersen graduated from Yuba City High in 1983
and went on to play quarterback at Sacramento City College. From there, he
transferred to UC Davis, earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 1988. He
later earned a master’s in educational psychology from Davis. At Davis, he set
numerous school records, including the single-season standards for passing
efficiency, completions, completion percentage, touchdown passes and total
offense as well as the career mark for completion percentage. He still remains
in the top 10 in Aggies history in numerous season and career categories
and his season and career completion percentage records still stand. In 1986,
Petersen was named the Northern California Athletic Conference Player of
the Year and earned UC Davis’ Colby E. Slater Award as the school’s Male
Athlete of the Year. He was also a captain and won the team’s Jerry Norris
Award (Most Valuable and Inspirational). He was inducted into the Cal Aggie
Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997. Petersen and his wife, Barbara, are parents of
two sons, Jack and Sam.

PETERSEN TOPS LIST: The 2014 NCAA record book lists the top active
FBS coaches in terms of winning percentage (minimum five years at FBS)
and the Huskies’ own Chris Petersen tops this list. Peteren’s .885 career
winning percentage entering the season was No. 3 in the country for all
NCAA levels behind only Lance Leipold of Wisconsin-Whitewater (.940)
and Chuck Martin (.914), who is in his first season at Miami (Ohio) having
compiled his entire previous W-L record at Grand Valley State. Here are
the top 10 FBS coaches by career winning percentage, at the start of the
2014 season:
No. Name, School W L T Pct.
1. Chris Petersen, Washington ................92 12 0 .885

PETERSEN’S FIRST FIVE: The NCAA Record Book also notes that Pe-
tersen won more games in his first season as a head coach (13-0 in 2006)
than any coach in history and that his record over his first five seasons as
a head coach (61-5) was fifth-best in history, ahead of the likes of Knute
Rockne and Bud Wilkinson and behind coaching legends like Gil Dobie
and Walter Camp. Here are the 10-best coaching performances over the
first five years of a career:
Coach, Team(s) Seasons W L T Pct.
Gil Dobie, North Dakota St., Washington ...... 1906-10 26 0 1 .981
Walter Camp, Yale, Stanford ......................... 1888-92 69 2 2 .959

COACHING STAFF: With a new head coach on board for 2014, the Husky
coaching staff obviously includes mostly new faces. In fact, of the nine
full-time coaches on the 2014 staff, six worked for Chris Petersen last
year at Boise State. Defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski was on Pe-
tersen’s staff in Boise in all eight seasons as head coach, including the
last four as coordinator. Kwiakowksi, a BSU Hall-of-Fame defensive line-
man, also worked at his alma mater from 1988 to 1996. Associate head
coach and offensive line coach Chris Strausser spent 12 of the last 13
season coaching in Boise (he coached at Colorado in 2006), meaning he
was with Petersen seven of eight seasons. Running backs coach and re-
cruiting coordinator Keith Bhonapha was also on Petersen’s Broncos staff
during Petersen’s entire eight seasons, though he started as director of
operations. He’s coached running backs the last five years at BSU. Assis-
tant head coach and linebackers coach Bob Gregory comes to Washington
having spent the last four seasons at Boise State. He was the defensive
coordinator at California from 2002 to 2009 and, along with also having
coached at Boise State in 2001, has also worked in the conference at
Oregon. Former Oregon State quarterback Jonathan Smith, who turned in
several top-class performances vs. the Huskies during his playing days,
was quarterbacks coach at Boise State the last two seasons. Previously
an offensive coordinator at Montana, he takes that role (along with QBs)
at Washington. Defensive backs coach Jimmy Lake, who spent the 2004
season in the same position at Washington under head coach Keith Gil-
bertson, was Petersen’s DBs coach in Boise the last two years, having
spent five seasons in the NFL before that. Wide receivers coach Brent
Pease worked at BSU under Petersen for his first six seasons as head
coach. The former standout quarterback at Montana, Pease returned to
the Northwest after having coached at Florida the last two seasons. De-
fensive line coach and special teams coordinator Jeff Choate has a simi-
lar recent history as he worked under Petersen from 2006 through 2011
before going to Washington State in 2012 and Florida in 2013. Among the
nine full-time assistants, the only returner from the 2013 season is tight
ends coach Jordan Paopao, who served in that same role in 2013 after
having worked as a UW grad assistant in 2011 and 2012, when he was
also in charge of tight ends. The UW staff for four grad assistants in 2014
includes one returner and three newcomers. The returner is former UW
and NFL wideout D’Andre Goodwin, who’s back for his second year. He’s
joined by Ben Thienes, Joshua Taufalele and Gerald Alexander. Thienes
was a GA at Boise State last season while Alexander was a standout DB
at Boise State before playing in the NFL for five years. Taufalele is new
to both UW and Petersen. The former offensive lineman at New Mexico
most recently coached at Foothill College in California.
HUSKIES vs. PANTHERS HISTORY: Given the geographical distance
the two universities and the fact that Georgia State only began playing
football in 2010, it's obviously no surprise that the Huskies and Panthers
have never faced one another on the football field. In fact, the Huskies
have never played football against any program from the state of Georgia.
HUSKY-PANTHER TIES: While the player rosters include virtually no
crossover, the Georgia State coaching staff includes five members with
direct ties to the UW program. Panthers head coach Trent Miles was the
running backs coach at Washington from 2005 to 2007. During that period,
he was on the same coaching staff as Tim Lappano and J.D. Williams,
who are both current assistants at Georgia State. Williams is also the
older brother of former Husky safety Curtis Williams while Lappano's son
Taylor played at the UW. Georgia State quarterbacks coach Luke Huard is
the brother of former Husky quarterbacks Brock and Damon Huard (Damon
is on the UW staff as the football program's chief administrative officer).
Luke was also a graduate assistant at Washington during Miles' time in
Seattle. Finally, GSU grad assistant Ronnie Fouch played quarterback at
Washington before transferring to Indiana State, where he started for
Miles. Fouch started eight games for Washington in 2008. He redshirted
the 2007 season and also appeared at quarterback in four games in 2009
before transferring. As for players, while there are a few Californians on
the GSU roster, none of them attended the same high school as any UW
player. The only Husky from anywhere near Atlanta (and it's not THAT near)
is senior Travell Dixon, who grew up in Miami, Fla.
HUSKIES vs. SUN BELT: The only history that Washington shares with
the members of the Sun Belt Conference all comes via the UW’s longtime
association with Idaho. The Vandals officially joined the Sun Belt this sea-
son. Washington and Idaho have a long history of football, mainly due to
the fact that the two universities were both a part of the Pacific Coast
Conference for many years. Idaho was a PCC member from 1922-1942 and
again from 1945-1958, when the league was broken up and re-formed as
the AAWU. The UW is 25-2-2 all-time vs. Idaho and have won 18 in a row.
Washington has never before played any of the other current football-
playing members of the Sun Belt Conference.

T E A M NO T E S
HOME vs. NON CONFERENCE: Washington has been very tough to beat
in home, non-conference games over the last several decades. Going back
to (and including) the 1981 season, the Huskies have posted a 59-13 record
against non-Pac-10/Pac-12 foes in Husky Stadium. Those 13 losses have
come to Nebraska (2010), LSU (2009), BYU (2008), Oklahoma (2008), Ohio
State (2007), Notre Dame (2005), Fresno State (2004), Nevada (2003), Air
Force (1999), Nebraska (1997), Notre Dame (1995), Colorado (1989) and
Oklahoma State (1985). Notable wins during that stretch include victories
over No. 19 Boise State last season, No. 22 Boise State in 2007, No. 11
Michigan in 2001, No. 4 Miami in 2000, and No. 12 Nebraska in 1992.
Prior to the 2004 loss to Nevada, Washington hadn’t lost a home game to
a non-league opponent since falling to Air Force, 31-21, on September 18,
1999. The Huskies had won 10 such games before that Nevada loss. The
UW is 10-2 over its last 12 home, non-league games, with an eight-game
winning streak.
1,000-YARD STREAK: With back-to-back stellar seasons the last two
years, Bishop Sankey has extended to five the Huskies’ current streak of
1,000-yard individual rushing seasons. Last year, the Doak Walker Award
finalist broke the UW record with 1,870 rushing yards. The year before,
he ran for 1,439. Sankey was just the 11th different player in UW history
to rush for 1,000 yards and his seasons was the 16th and 17th 1,000-yard
season in school history. In each of the last five seasons, the UW has
produced a 1,000-yard back. Chris Polk reached the benchmark each of his
three seasons as a starter, running for 1,113 (2009), 1,415 (2010) and 1,488
(2011). Polk and Sankey were the fourth and fifth Huskies ever to rush for
1,000 yards in more than one season.
FOUR BOWLS IN FIVE YEARS AFTER WINLESS SEASON: By reach-
ing a bowl game last year for the fourth season while just five years re-
moved from a winless season, Washington pulled off a rare feat. The
Huskies were just the second team in the last 50 years of major college
football to have gone from winless to four bowl games within five sea-
sons. The only other program to accomplish that feat is Florida (winless in
1979; bowl games in 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1983).
THE PAC-12: Prior to the 2011 season, the Pac-10 Conference added
Utah and Colorado to expand to the Pac-12. Washington, which along
with California is one of two schools who have been in the conference
since its founding in 1915, plays in the Pac-12 North, along with the other
three Northwest schools (Oregon, OSU, WSU) and Stanford and Califor-
nia. Under current plans, each school will play all five division rivals, plus
four of six teams in the other division each season. The first two seasons,
the Huskies did not face UCLA or Arizona State. Last year and in 2013, the
Huskies don’t face Utah or USC.
CAPTAINS: Washington will utilize game-by-game captains this season.
Here is the game-by-game list:
Hawai’i: Micah Hatchie, Hau’oli Kikaha, Jaydon Mickens, Danny Shelton
EWU: DiAndre Campbell, Brian Clay, Andrew Hudson, Colin Tanigawa
Illinois: Dexter Charles, Evan Hudson, Cyler Miles, Shaq Thompson
THE 100-YARD FACTOR: Since the 1947 season, Washington is 192-60-
3 (.758) when a Husky player rushes for 100 yards in a game. The Huskies
are 1-0 in such games this season (EWU).
HISTORY LESSON: Successfully rushing the football and winning go
hand-in-hand for the Huskies. Since 1990, UW has rushed for 200 yards
in a game 91 times. The Huskies’ record stands at 76-14-1 (.841) in those
contests. Since 1995, UW is 51-11-1 (.817) when rushing for 200 yards.
HUSKY STADIUM RENOVATION: Husky Stadium underwent a major
renovation over from Nov., 2011, through Aug., 2013, as the entire lower
bowl and south upper deck were demolished and replaced. The new fa-
cility features a new, state-of-the-art football operations center (weight
room, training room, locker room, meeting rooms, coaches’ offices) in the
west end, much more premium seating options and a new playing surface.
Husky Stadium had featured a track up until 2011, so seats that were once
far from the field, particularly in the west end, are much closer to the ac-
tion. For much more information, including a virtual look from every seat
in the new stadium, photo galleries, live construction cams, and more, go
to huskystadium.com.
HISTORIC HUSKY STADIUM: The Oregon game on Nov. 5, 2011,
marked the final game in Husky Stadium prior to major renovations that
have now been completed. The Huskies re-opened their home field with a
38-6 win over then-No. 19 Boise State on Aug. 31, 2013. The 2014 season
marks the 94th season of play in Husky Stadium. Original construction on
the facility was completed in 1920 when Washington played one game in
the new campus facility. UW’s all-time record in Husky Stadium stands at
365-170-21 (.675).
