UW Wraps Four-Game Homestand With Pac-12 Opener
web: www. gohuskies. com • twitter: @UW_Football
THE GAME: The Washington football team (4-0) ends a stretch of four straight home Saturdays in
September with its opening Pac-12 game of 2014 as the Stanford Cardinal (2-1 overall, 0-1 Pac-12)
come to Husky Stadium for a 1:15 p.m. game this Saturday. The game will air on FOX television. The
Cardinal, who come to Seattle after a bye week, are ranked No. 16 in the current AP top 25 and No. 14
in the coaches’ poll. Washington, which has won its Pac-12 opener five straight seasons, is receiving
votes in both. The Huskies are seven spots out of the AP top 25 with 30 points and four spots out of
the coaches’ with 62 points. After the Stanford game, the Huskies have a week off before returning
to action Oct. 11 at California.
QUICK SLANTS: Washington shares the national lead for total sacks with 19 ... senior DT Danny
Shelton leads NCAA Division I-FBS with seven total sacks and shares the national lead with 9.5 tackles
for loss ... teammate Hau’oli Kikaha is tied for second in the nation with 6.0 total sacks ... with nine
takeaways and just one turnover, the Huskies’ turnover margin of plus-8 is tied for best in the nation
with three other teams ... the UW is one of just nine teams that have yet to throw an interception this
year (one of four to do so over four games) ... Washington is one of six teams to share the national
lead with one turnover ... kicker Cameron Van Winkle is 6-for-6 on field goals this season ... only three
kickers in the nation have made more without a miss (two are 7-for-7 and one is 8-for-8) ... Washington
has had eight true freshmen play this year: DB Budda Baker, DL Will Dissly, DB Darren Gardenhire, DB
Naijiel Hale, DB Sidney Jones, WR Brayden Lenius, WR Dante Pettis and PK Tristan Vizcaino ... Baker
and Jones have both started ... thanks to the four straight home games and a bye week, the Dawgs
will go 42 days between road games before taking on Cal in Berkeley on Oct. 11 ... vs. Hawai’i, John
Ross caught a 91-yard TD pass from Jeff Lindquist, the second-longest pass play in Husky history
(Jake Locker to Marcel Reece, 98 yards, 2007, is the record) ... prior to the season-opening win at
UH, the last time a new Husky coach won his debut game was in 1993, when Jim Lambright’s Dawgs
opened the season with a win over Stanford ... Chris Petersen is the first Husky coach to begin his
UW career 4-0 since Gil Dobie (1908) ... Dobie got a 6-6 tie vs. Washington State in his fifth game.

THE HEAD COACH: Chris Petersen, who has built a reputation as an of-
fensive innovator who carried the Boise State football program to its high-
est highs, was finally swayed to take on a new challenge when he agreed
to become head coach of the Huskies in December of 2013. Petersen, 49,
the only two-time winner of the Paul “Bear” Bryant Award (2006 and 2009),
compiled an exceptional 92-12 record in his eight seasons as Boise State
head coach (2006-2013), including two unbeaten seasons (13-0 in 2006 and
14-0 in 2009) and two BCS bowl berths. He won five conference titles and
posted a 57-6 record in conference play (WAC from 2006-10 and Mountain
West from 2011-13). Petersen, who also won the Bobby Dodd Coach of the
Year Award in 2010, led the Broncos to 10 or more wins in seven of his eight
seasons and to 12 or more in four straight (2008-11). In 2006, Petersen’s first
season in charge in Boise, he led the Broncos to their first undefeated sea-
son since 1958, when the school was a junior college. The 2006 season was
capped by a 43-42 overtime win over Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl, a game
remembered by many as one of the greatest in bowl-game history. That Boise
team ended the year ranked No. 5 in the final Associated Press top 25 poll.
The following season, the Broncos went 10-3 and finished out of the polls
for what would be the only time in Petersen’s first seven seasons. The 2008
squad went 12-1 and ranked No. 11 in the final top 25, finishing the regular
season undefeated. In 2009, Petersen led the Broncos to their second unde-
feated campaign and another Fiesta Bowl berth. Boise State beat TCU, 17-10,
in Arizona, becoming the first team from a non-BCS conference ever to win
two BCS bowl games. The ‘09 Broncos checked in at No. 4 in the final AP
poll. The 2010 season ended with a 12-1 record, a No. 9 final ranking and
a win in the Las Vegas Bowl, the first of three straight trips to Vegas for
Boise State. In 2011, BSU once again went 12-1, finishing with a No. 8 final
ranking. Last season, Petersen’s team went 11-2 and beat Washington in the
Las Vegas Bowl, good for a No. 18 final ranking. In 2013, Boise State, which
faced Washington in the first game at the newly renovated Husky Stadium,
finished the regular season with an 8-4 record (Petersen came to the UW prior
to the Broncos’ bowl game). Throughout his teams’ unmatched on-field suc-
cess, Petersen also saw his Broncos succeed in the classroom. In 2011, Boise
State was the only school to finish in the top 10 in both major polls and also
receive a Public Recognition Award from the NCAA for finishing in the top 10
percent of the Academic Progress Rate (APR), the second of three straight
such awards for the program. Boise State’s APR was second in the nation in
2011 and 2012 and Petersen was recognized in 2012 for having the best APR
for the two previous years among all FBS coaches. Known for his work with
quarterbacks, Petersen tutored Ryan Dinwiddie, Jared Zabransky and Kellen
Moore at Boise State. Moore set an NCAA record with 50 career wins as a
starting QB while winning three conference player of the year awards. Moore
was the only player ever to record four 3,000-yard seasons in both passing
and total offense. His 142 passing touchdowns were second-most in NCAA
history while his 14,667 career passing yards were fifth-most. He twice led
the nation in passing efficiency and set an NCAA record for season intercep-
tion percentage, throwing just three in 431 attempts in 2009. During his eight
seasons seasons, 51 Broncos earned all-conference honors. Before taking
over as head coach at Boise State, Petersen served as the Broncos’ offensive
coordinator from 2001-05, during which his teams averaged 41.3 points per
game, leading the nation in scoring in both 2002 and 2003. Petersen began
his coaching career in 1987 as freshman coach at his alma mater, UC Davis. In
1989, he became the Aggies’ varsity wide receivers coach. In 1992, Petersen
moved to Pittsburgh, where he was quarterbacks coach. That season, Alex
Van Pelt passes for more than 3,100 yards and 20 touchdowns. In 1993, Pe-
tersen moved back west to take over a QBs coach at Portland State, helping
the Vikings to Division II playoff berths in each of his two seasons. In 1995,
he took a job at Oregon as the receivers coach under Mike Bellotti, a position
he held before moving to Boise as offensive coordinator in 2001. Born in Yuba
City, Calif., on Oct. 13, 1964, Petersen graduated from Yuba City High in 1983
and went on to play quarterback at Sacramento City College. From there, he
transferred to UC Davis, earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 1988. He
later earned a master’s in educational psychology from Davis. At Davis, he set
numerous school records, including the single-season standards for passing
efficiency, completions, completion percentage, touchdown passes and total
offense as well as the career mark for completion percentage. He still remains
in the top 10 in Aggies history in numerous season and career categories
and his season and career completion percentage records still stand. In 1986,
Petersen was named the Northern California Athletic Conference Player of
the Year and earned UC Davis’ Colby E. Slater Award as the school’s Male
Athlete of the Year. He was also a captain and won the team’s Jerry Norris
Award (Most Valuable and Inspirational). He was inducted into the Cal Aggie
Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997. Petersen and his wife, Barbara, are parents of
two sons, Jack and Sam.

PETERSEN TOPS LIST: The 2014 NCAA record book lists the top active FBS
coaches in terms of winning percentage (minimum five years at FBS) and the
Huskies’ own Chris Petersen tops this list. Peteren’s .885 career winning per-
centage entering the season was No. 3 in the country for all NCAA levels
behind only Lance Leipold of Wisconsin-Whitewater (.940) and Chuck Martin
(.914), who is in his first season at Miami (Ohio) having compiled his entire
previous W-L record at Grand Valley State. Here are the top 10 FBS coaches
by career winning percentage, at the start of the 2014 season:
No. Name, School W L T Pct.
1. Chris Petersen, Washington ................92 12 0 .885
2. Urban Meyer, Ohio State ...................128 25 0 .837

PETERSEN’S FIRST FIVE: The NCAA Record Book also notes that Petersen
won more games in his first season as a head coach (13-0 in 2006) than any
coach in history and that his record over his first five seasons as a head coach
(61-5) was fifth-best in history, ahead of the likes of Knute Rockne and Bud
Wilkinson and behind coaching legends like Gil Dobie and Walter Camp. Here
are the 10-best coaching performances over the first five years of a career:
Coach, Team(s) Seasons W L T Pct.
Gil Dobie, North Dakota St., Washington ...... 1906-10 26 0 1 .981
Walter Camp, Yale, Stanford ......................... 1888-92 69 2 2 .959

COACHING STAFF: With a new head coach on board for 2014, the Husky
coaching staff obviously includes mostly new faces. In fact, of the nine full-
time coaches on the 2014 staff, six worked for Chris Petersen last year at
Boise State. Defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski was on Petersen’s staff
in Boise in all eight seasons as head coach, including the last four as coordi-
nator. Kwiakowksi, a BSU Hall-of-Fame defensive lineman, also worked at his
alma mater from 1988 to 1996. Associate head coach and offensive line coach
Chris Strausser spent 12 of the last 13 season coaching in Boise (he coached
at Colorado in 2006), meaning he was with Petersen seven of eight seasons.
Running backs coach and recruiting coordinator Keith Bhonapha was also on
Petersen’s Broncos staff during Petersen’s entire eight seasons, though he
started as director of operations. He’s coached running backs the last five
years at BSU. Assistant head coach and linebackers coach Bob Gregory comes
to Washington having spent the last four seasons at Boise State. He was the
defensive coordinator at California from 2002 to 2009 and, along with also
having coached at Boise State in 2001, has also worked in the conference at
Oregon. Former Oregon State quarterback Jonathan Smith, who turned in sev-
eral top-class performances vs. the Huskies during his playing days, was quar-
terbacks coach at Boise State the last two seasons. Previously an offensive
coordinator at Montana, he takes that role (along with QBs) at Washington.
Defensive backs coach Jimmy Lake, who spent the 2004 season in the same
position at Washington under head coach Keith Gilbertson, was Petersen’s
DBs coach in Boise the last two years, having spent five seasons in the NFL
before that. Wide receivers coach Brent Pease worked at BSU under Petersen
for his first six seasons as head coach. The former standout quarterback at
Montana, Pease returned to the Northwest after having coached at Florida
the last two seasons. Defensive line coach and special teams coordinator
Jeff Choate has a similar recent history as he worked under Petersen from
2006 through 2011 before going to Washington State in 2012 and Florida in
2013. Among the nine full-time assistants, the only returner from the 2013
season is tight ends coach Jordan Paopao, who served in that same role in
2013 after having worked as a UW grad assistant in 2011 and 2012, when he
was also in charge of tight ends. The UW staff for four grad assistants in 2014
includes one returner and three newcomers. The returner is former UW and
NFL wideout D’Andre Goodwin, who’s back for his second year. He’s joined
by Ben Thienes, Joshua Taufalele and Gerald Alexander. Thienes was a GA
at Boise State last season while Alexander was a standout DB at Boise State
before playing in the NFL for five years. Taufalele is new to both UW and Pe-
tersen. The former offensive lineman at New Mexico most recently coached
at Foothill College in California.
HUSKIES vs. CARDINAL HISTORY: Washington holds a close 41-39-4
advantage in the series against Stanford, but has been the dominant team in
recent decades. After winning eight straight vs. Stanford from 1959 to 1966, the
Huskies lost 10 in a row from 1967 to 1976. Since that 1976 loss, Washington
has gone 22-9 against the Cardinal. One of those nine losses was a big upset
in 1982 when the No. 2 Huskies fell to the Cardinal, 43-31, in Palo Alto. The
second UW loss during that stretch came at Stanford in 1994, when the Cardinal
upset 12th-ranked Washington, 46-28. More recently, the Cardinal beat the
Huskies, 27-13, at Palo Alto in 2004. After no game in 2005, Stanford won its
second straight over the UW in a 20-3 victory in 2006 at Husky Stadium. The
Cardinal also won five seasons ago in Seattle, 35-28, and in 2010 in Palo Alto
(34-14). Three years ago, Stanford blanked the UW, 41-0, at Husky Stadium;
and in 2011, the Cardinal won, 65-21, at Stanford. Last year, the Cardinal edged
teh Dawgs in a close game in Palo Alto, 31-28, with Washington's attempt to
drive or a tie or the lead stalled at midifeld with 1:16 left on the clock. Bishop
Sankey rushed for 125 yards and Keith Price threw for 350 in the loss. In 2012
on a Thursday night in Seattle, the Huskies edged the No. 8 Cardinal, 17-13,
thanks to a 61-yard run from Bishop Sankey and a 35-yard TD catch from Kasen
Williams. Prior to that, the most recent UW victory had come in 2007, when the
Huskies rushed for a total of 388 yards in a 27-9 win over the Cardinal. Louis
Rankin led the way with 255 yards on 36 carries. Over the last 17 seasons, the
two old league rivals have not played one other four times (1998, 1999, 2002
and 2005). Washington and Stanford first played one another in 1893 in a game
that marked the first major college opponent for UW. That game, played in West
Seattle, resulted in a 40-0 Stanford victory. There wouldn’t be another matchup
between the two schools until 1920, when the Cardinal nipped Washington,
3-0, in the last UW home game played somewhere other than Husky Stadium.
Three weeks after that game, the UW would open what would eventually come
to be known as Husky Stadium. After a 0-0 tie in 1921, the Huskies’ first victory
in the series came in 1922, 12-8 at Palo Alto.

WASHINGTON-STANFORD TIES: Stanford’s coaching staff includes de-
fensive line coach Randy Hart, who spent 21 seasons (1988-2008) under five
different head coaches at the UW. First-year SU defensive backs coach Duane
Akina was a three-year letterman quarterback at Washington in the 1970s
and began his long career as a GA at the UW under Don James in 1979-80.
Additionally, Husky tight ends coach Jordan Paopao was on the Stanford staff
as a recruiting assistant prior to coming to Washington four seasons ago.
Current Stanford head man David Shaw and current assistant Lance Ander-
son were on the San Diego coaching staff when Paopao played and worked
there. UW linebackers coach Bob Gregory spent a number of years on Jeff
Tedford’s staff at Cal along with SU special teams coordinator Pete Alamar.
There are five Washingtonians on the current Stanford roster: Isaiah Brandt-
Sims (Wenatchee), Calvin Chandler (Bellarmine Prep), Josh Garnett (Puyallup),
Charlie Hopkins (Gonzaga Prep), (Lynnwood), Michael Rector (Bellarmine Prep)
and Sam Shober (Archbishop Murphy). Washington’s roster includes numer-
ous Californians, including 14 from Northern California: DiAndre Campbell
(Oakland), K.J. Carta-Samuels (Saratoga), Aaron Chapman (San Jose), Brian
Clay (Vacaville), Darrell Daniels (Pittsburg), Ross Dolbec (Orinda), Travis Feeney
(Richmond), Kevin King (San Leandro), Scott Lawyer (San Jose), Marcus Peters
(Oakland), Elijah Qualls (Petaluma), Neel Salukhe (San Jose), Shaq Thompson
(Sacramento) and Vita Vea (Milpitas). Other Huskies who attended the same
high school as Cardinal players: UW’s Taniela Tupou and Shober (Archbishop
Murphy); UW’s Salukhe and SU’s Gautam Krishnamurthi (Harker School); UW’s
Carta-Samuels and Chapman and SU’s Kyle Olugbode (Bellarmine Prep (San
Jose)); UW’s Gavin McDaniel and SU’s Solomon Thomas (Coppell); UW’s Jesse
Sosebee and SU’s Jeff Trojan (Edison); UW’s Mike Criste and SU’s Daniel Marx
(Mission Viejo); UW’ Andrew Kirkland and SU’s Joey Alfieri; UW’s Matt James
and SU’s Addison Johnson (Coeur d’Alene) UW’s Kendyl Taylor and SU’s Casey
Tucker (Hamilton); UW’s Coleman Shelton, Colin Tanigawa and John Turner and
SU’s Kodi Whitfield and Conrad Ukropina (Loyola).
HUSKIES vs. BAY AREA SCHOOLS: Washington has a combined, all-time
record of 105-78-8 vs. opponents from the San Francisco Bay Area. Washington
is 52-38-4 against Cal, 41-39-4 vs. Stanford, 10-0 vs. San Jose State, 1-1 vs.
St. Mary’s and 1-0 vs. Santa Clara. The Huskies haven’t played Santa Clara
since 1935 and St. Mary’s since 1947. Since 1977, UW is 55-14-0 vs. Bay Area
teams: 25-5 vs. Cal, 22-9 vs. Stanford and 8-0 vs. San Jose State.
1,000-YARD STREAK: With back-to-back stellar seasons the last two years,
Bishop Sankey has extended to five the Huskies’ current streak of 1,000-yard
individual rushing seasons. Last year, the Doak Walker Award finalist broke the
UW record with 1,870 rushing yards. The year before, he ran for 1,439. Sankey
was just the 11th different player in UW history to rush for 1,000 yards and his
seasons was the 16th and 17th 1,000-yard season in school history. In each
of the last five seasons, the UW has produced a 1,000-yard back. Chris Polk
reached the benchmark each of his three seasons as a starter, running for 1,113
(2009), 1,415 (2010) and 1,488 (2011). Polk and Sankey were the fourth and fifth
Huskies ever to rush for 1,000 yards in more than one season.
FOUR BOWLS IN FIVE YEARS AFTER WINLESS SEASON: By reaching a
bowl game last year for the fourth season while just five years removed from
a winless season, Washington pulled off a rare feat. The Huskies were just
the second team in the last 50 years of major college football to have gone
from winless to four bowl games within five seasons. The only other program
to accomplish that feat is Florida (winless in 1979; bowl games in 1980, 1981,
1982 and 1983).
THE PAC-12: Prior to the 2011 season, the Pac-10 Conference added Utah and
Colorado to expand to the Pac-12. Washington, which along with California
is one of two schools who have been in the conference since its founding in
1915, plays in the Pac-12 North, along with the other three Northwest schools
(Oregon, OSU, WSU) and Stanford and California. Under current plans, each
school will play all five division rivals, plus four of six teams in the other
division each season. The first two seasons, the Huskies did not face UCLA
or Arizona State. Last year and in 2013, the Huskies don’t face Utah or USC.
CAPTAINS: Washington will utilize game-by-game captains this season.
Here is the game-by-game list:
Hawai’i: Micah Hatchie, Hau’oli Kikaha, Jaydon Mickens, Danny Shelton
EWU: DiAndre Campbell, Brian Clay, Andrew Hudson, Colin Tanigawa
Illinois: Dexter Charles, Evan Hudson, Cyler Miles, Shaq Thompson
GSU: Jesse Callier, John Timu, Cameron Van Winkle, Kasen Williams
THE 100-YARD FACTOR: Since the 1947 season, Washington is 192-60-3
(.758) when a Husky player rushes for 100 yards in a game. The Huskies are
1-0 in such games this season (EWU).
HISTORY LESSON: Successfully rushing the football and winning go hand-
in-hand for the Huskies. Since 1990, UW has rushed for 200 yards in a game
91 times. The Huskies’ record stands at 76-14-1 (.841) in those contests. Since
1995, UW is 51-11-1 (.817) when rushing for 200 yards.
HUSKY STADIUM RENOVATION: Husky Stadium underwent a major reno-
vation over from Nov., 2011, through Aug., 2013, as the entire lower bowl
and south upper deck were demolished and replaced. The new facility fea-
tures a new, state-of-the-art football operations center (weight room, training
room, locker room, meeting rooms, coaches’ offices) in the west end, much
more premium seating options and a new playing surface. Husky Stadium
had featured a track up until 2011, so seats that were once far from the field,
particularly in the west end, are much closer to the action. For much more
information, including a virtual look from every seat in the new stadium, photo
galleries, live construction cams, and more, go to huskystadium.com.
HISTORIC HUSKY STADIUM: The Oregon game on Nov. 5, 2011, marked
the final game in Husky Stadium prior to major renovations that have now
been completed. The Huskies re-opened their home field with a 38-6 win over
then-No. 19 Boise State on Aug. 31, 2013. The 2014 season marks the 94th
season of play in Husky Stadium. Original construction on the facility was
completed in 1920 when Washington played one game in the new campus
facility. UW’s all-time record in Husky Stadium stands at 366-170-21 (.676).

EXPERIENCED O-LINE: Washington boasts the rare distinction of re-
turning seven players with starting experience on the offensive line.
What’s more: all seven of those players started at some point TWO sea-
sons ago (in 2012) and were returning starters last season. Entering the
2014 season, UW offensive linemen had started a total of 123 games.
Here’s the breakdown (alphabetically): James Atoe (7), Shane Brostek (3),
Dexter Charles (21), Mike Criste (20), Micah Hatchie (26), Ben Riva (20)
