As the industry leader in bringing new technology
to market, New Flyer is proud to offer a complete
range of hybrid-electric bus solutions to meet your
transportation service needs. New Flyer has a long
history of hybrid technology experience, dating
back to 1997 and has been building buses in North
America since 1930.
ISO 14001 Certified

With the most revenue service miles, the most diesel-electric and gasolineelectric configurations, and the most vehicles on the road, we continue to
be the North American leader in building and supporting heavy-duty buses.

Diesel-electric and gasoline-electric hybrid buses from New Flyer offer
proven performance, superior support, and long-awaited relief for the
environment. Owners of New Flyer buses are doing their part to reduce
the use of non-renewable fossil fuels while saving operational costs during
periods of increasing fuel prices.

New Flyer offers a choice of hybrid bus technologies in 30, 35
and 40-foot standard vehicles and 60-foot articulated vehicles.
Customers can choose the best propulsion system that meets
their service requirements: a dual-mode parallel hybrid system
developed by Allison Electric Drives, or a full series hybrid drive
system developed by ISE and Siemens.

Parallel Hybrid-Electric Buses
New Flyer diesel-electric hybrid buses reduce emissions by up to
90% when compared to conventional diesel-fueled buses and
reduce vehicle noise throughout their entire operating range.

It (the New Flyer DE60LF)
performs well, provides
good comfort, has an
acceptable noise level,
good emissions and
excellent reliability. We're
very pleased with our fleet
purchase of 213 vehicles
and the support New Flyer
delivers with their product.

Hybrid Technology
Performance
New Flyer has logged more on-road hours with hybrid
technology than any other hybrid bus manufacturer in North
America. We have minimized changes to the vehicle, ensuring
a seamless introduction to bus fleets and operators. You
can be assured that our buses will withstand the rigors of
a demanding bus environment, as extensive testing at
Altoona’s Vehicle Testing Center has been completed on all
New Flyer heavy-duty bus models.

Maintenance
During the design process, maintainability and repairability
were two crucial issues that could not be compromised.
New Flyer's development team limited the amount of new
parts and procedures to assist customers who would eventually
operate hybrid buses. As a result, customers have experienced
virtually no impact to their current maintenance practices
and technicians are immediately familiar with New Flyer's
hybrid-electric buses. As with all New Flyer products, training,
service, parts and documentation are available throughout
North America. For more information, visit our website at
www.newflyer.com.

Power is drawn from two energy sources: a clean diesel,
heavy-duty engine combined with a drive unit and electric
energy from batteries located on the roof of the vehicle.
The electronic control unit blends power from the two energy
sources, whether electric (low speed), diesel (highway speed)
or a combination, reducing emissions, optimizing fuel economy
and reducing overall engine wear. Fuel consumption is reduced
by up to 50% using regenerative braking technology, which
captures energy as the vehicle slows and allows the internal
combustion engine to operate at its most optimal range. As
a result, harmful greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are reduced.

Improved Fuel Economy

One tested—235 delivered

Increased fuel efficiency of 20-50%

The reliability of New Flyer buses is never compromised with
technology. In fact, official maintenance reports from King
County Metro in Seattle show a significant improvement in
performance when using New Flyer’s 60’ articulated hybrid
buses. These units have been averaging over 7200 miles
between trouble calls – a 45% improvement over the fleet
average (reported at less than 5000 miles). This report includes
road calls for any reason, not just for the hybrid systems related
issues. This means these buses are reducing the operating
cost per mile and reducing the need for back-up vehicles to
respond to in-service replacement.

Most of the equipment required to support the bus, such as
compressors, the HVAC system and air systems, is electrically
powered, saving fuel and reducing emissions caused by these
components.

Series Hybrid-Electric Buses
New Flyer Series System buses use a smaller engine that is
certified for mass transportation use. The engine is not directly
coupled to the vehicle drivetrain. Operating at peak efficiency,
it is connected to an electric generator that provides power to
the wheels. The system works well in frequent stop-and-go
service because the electrically-driven propulsion system has
high torque at low speeds, providing smooth, fast acceleration
regardless of the grade.
