ATB Financial struggles with SAP implementation
SAP’s core banking project at ATB in Canada is a year late and over budget
SAP’s core banking project at ATB Financial in Canada is experiencing a major setback and budget review. The project is one year behind schedule (the implementation was originally scheduled for early 2010, but is now reset for 2011) and the initial budget of $157 million has had to be significantly increased. No comment was available from ATB and IBS was referred to the bank’s management discussion and analysis (MD&A) report. The statement, issued by the bank, says that although ATB realised from the outset the scale of the initiative and ‘allocated a substantial amount of resources – both people and capital’ for it, the extent of the work involved was underestimated. ‘ATB has recently determined that the scope and effort behind the project is significantly larger than initially anticipated. Further, ATB believes that the management of the programme can be strengthened.’ The bank launched an ambitious IT transformation project in May 2008 (IBS, May 2008, SAP gains two high-end deals), to replace its Cobol-based legacy systems and to tailor SAP’s banking suite for the ...continued on page 10

CRDB nears crucial Misys Bankfusion cut-over
Tanzania-based CRDB poised to go live; Bankfusion Universal Banking gains fourth taker
The pivotal cut-over of Misys’ emerging Bankfusion Universal Banking system at CRDB Bank in Tanzania is now due to happen over the long Easter weekend. Meanwhile, a fourth bank has signed for the system, Time Bank in Zimbabwe. The deadline at CRDB has been pushed back from the revised planned go-live in March to allow more time to iron out any issues. ‘If anything goes wrong, we have time to take care of it,’ says the bank’s deputy managing director, Jens Ole Pedersen. Having been through such migrations, he is aware that there will be issues but there has been extensive testing. The original cut-over was scheduled for last November. ‘These things will always take more time, you always tend to be overly positive. No harm has been done and it is best to be as prepared as possible, so long as it doesn’t cost a lot,’ says Pedersen. Misys has been ‘very supportive, and very keen that we will be a success’ so there has been little additional cost for the bank. A failure would be very difficult for Misys, says Pedersen, because there are a lot of banks waiting to see what happens at CRDB. Although the system has been live for some time at Standard Bank in Zimbabwe, he doesn’t think there is much comparison as it is a single branch operation. CRDB has 65 branches and more than one million accounts. The ...continued on page 6

About the IBS Sales League Table The IBS Sales League Table is universally acknowledged as the barometer for international core banking systems sales for the last 16 years. It covers 60 international suppliers’ sales in over 150 countries. The table is compiled annually from submissions from each supplier detailing the names of the banks that have bought their systems in the year. IBS verifies each submission; licence renewals and extensions to the systems within a bank are excluded.

Core Banking Systems

Core Banking Systems

30 Case Studies
Volume 2
This collection of case studies includes the experiences of an additional 30 banks in over 20 countries worldwide that haverecently changed or installed new core systems. They look at awide variety of organisations offering a range of banking activitiesin very different geographical, organisational and operational circumstances. The report provides the reader with a revealing insight intothe strategies employed, the successes enjoyed and the pitfalls tobe avoided when embarking on these major implementations, allowing senior decision makers and project leaders to make comparisons, learn valuable lessons and avoid costly mistakes. This second set of 30 case studies also delves further into the practical aspects of conversion and implementation. Each case study is written from the bank’s point of view, as opposed to the vendor’s, and so avoids vendor sales spiel. Each case study focuses on: ❏ ❏ ❏ ❏ ❏ ❏ ❏ ❏ ❏ ❏ The bank’s objectives when deciding to change/select systems The scope and complexity of the project The areas of banking operation affected What technologies were selected (and why) The selection process used and rationale for the bank’s final choice of vendor Details of implementation – structure, phases, training, interfacing, successes and problems Time-lines for selection and implementation The results and level of satisfaction Functionality of the new system Lessons learnt.

30 Case Studies
Volume 1
This report details the experiences of 30 banks which have recently changed or installed new core systems. It compares the projects, and draws conclusions about what makes them successful and what are the pitfalls. The case studies cover banks in 20 countries in all regions of the globe covering a variety of banking activities.

The banks were asked: ❏ ❏ ❏ ❏ ❏ ❏ ❏ Why they decided to change systems What was the scope and complexity of the project How they selected the new system How they implemented it How long it took to select and implement How successful it was What they would have done differently.

Key observations: ❏ ❏ ❏ ❏ ❏ ❏ Many banks need to change to comply with regulations A common reason for changing was to improve retail marketing Banks who did not evaluate fully the chosen system regretted it later Some banks shortened the selection process by skipping the RFI stage Many banks underestimated their involvement in implementation, particularly user testing Data conversion and interfaces were the biggest headaches Despite the complexity of the projects, few projects had any major problems A few banks were able to calculate ROI, one estimated payback in one year.

The Innovators
Financial institutions that think differently
In times of hardship, it is how you differentiate yourself from your competition that will define your success. The Innovators comprises a collection of financial institutions that have decided to think differently and not always follow the crowd. It explores and dissects 20 institutions that are truly innovative in their business and systems strategies and in the technology they have chosen to implement. Our search has taken in all corners of the globe and all sizes and make-up of financial institutions. The Innovators looks at the various benefits this has brought to the banks, both internally and to customers at an individual, SME and corporate level. The case studies ask how much of a competitive edge these innovations provide and if this is the direction of banking to come. Innovations include: ❏ Web 2.0 technology ❏ Branch franchising ❏ Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) ❏ The world's only registered charitable bank ❏ Biometrics and smart cards ❏ Mobile money transfers and payments ❏ e-Invoicing ❏ Urban microfinance advances in Africa ❏ Pioneering Islamic finance in the US ❏ Alleviating poverty in rural India. Issues include: ❏ Where the innovation comes from ❏ What form it takes ❏ How it is being supported by people, processes & technology ❏ What has been achieved ❏ What is planned in the future.

Corporate Financial Technology

25 Case Studies
Setting up a technology project can prove daunting, even for hardened professionals. The cost, the risk, the pressure, the time involved – all can eat away at the confidence of those involved. There’s no substitute for direct experience, so knowing what thosewho have already been there – and come out the other side – have to say can provide you with extremely valuable insight before you set out. Corporate Financial Technology: 25 Case Studies explores in depth the personal triumphs and tragedies across some of the leading global companies such as BT, Google, Phillips and UPS, covering a broad scope of projects. From relatively simple (but extremely lucrative) cost-hedging technology to nerve-jangling full TMS and ERP implementations, these are real projects, by real companies, written without bias by IBS’s team of independent and informed reporters. Case Study Coverage Each case study presents real life experiences concerning the installation of new technology including: ❏ Key business statistics and objectives ❏ Challenges faced ❏ Implementation process and roll out ❏ Outcomes, expectations and limitations ❏ Results and future developments. Regardless of the exact nature of your own financial IT project, each case study will help you form a vision of how to approach it, what to expect once you are underway and, importantly, how to deal with the issues when they arise.

Customer Centricity
Edition 2
‘Around 80 per cent of CEOs think their companies produce a superior product or service but only about eight per cent of their customers agree.’ Steve Towers, senior VP at not-for-profit organisation BP Group. In this new 2nd edition of our Customer Centricity Analyst Report, we explore where the industry has gone so far, and what it has really achieved in its search for customer centricity. We tackle the elusive question of what ‘customer centricity’ actually is, we analyse the drivers and objectives for becoming customer-centric, and we evaluate the pitfalls and offer examples of best practice. Instead of trying to make each process and product within a financial organisation ever more efficient, leading banks are looking at: ❏ ❏ ❏ ❏ ❏ Creating shared services that can be used across the organisation Centralising services through ‘centres of excellence’ Replacing existing platforms and unifying systems infrastructures Initiating enterprise-wide transformation and re-engineering programmes Truly driving these programmes from the perspective of customer interaction and Successful Customer Outcomes (SCO).
