SPECIALS P29

Inside issue 164 – ART (P07) Eden Court Stalls display ‘Poise
& Reflection’ by Jane Lewis, whilst IMAG host something called
Celtic Forest. | FILM (P10) The moneyed studios will urge you
to Captain America: Civil War or John Favreau’s live action
Jungle Book, or The Huntsman spin-off, but we’d suggest
more skewed fun in the shapes of Eddie The Eagle, Elvis &
Nixon, Anomalisa, Midnight Special, or the German Victoria
– a stunning single 138 min take! | KIDS (P14) Cbeebies fans will
be out in force for Mister Maker whilst guides and scouts etc
will entertain you in the Inverness Area Gang Show, and Fun
Box visit Dingwall. | MUSIC (P18) Ironworks now plays host
to a new event, TECHnique, with true giants of techno, Dave
Clarke, Kenny Larkin and more, but it’s folk and acoustic music
that really dominates: Altan Mànran Adrian Moffat Newton
Faulkner are the tip of that iceberg, whilst classicalists will love
BBC SSO, and young hip types will be out for Man Made –
featuring Nile Marr, son of axe legend Johnny. | SPECIALS (P29)
Mad concoctions prevail – take your pick from the Inverness
Science Festival or the NIP Craft Whisky & Gin Festival… |
SPORT (P31) Delights on offer range from the classiest cycle
event in Scotland, Loch Ness Etape – to the slightly alarming
sounding Man V Horse (it’s not boxing, phew). | THEATRE (P34)
You really shouldn’t miss the ‘Muppets for grown-ups’ fun of
Avenue Q, or the National Theatre production, I Am Thomas,
stand-up Tom Stade, or indeed Scottish Ballet’s new Swan
Lake. | BACK END (P38) Thai Green Curry on Millburn Road…

Does globalisation mean one day we’d have a vote on Trump,
et al? Think we’d like one, the way it’s going. Instead we have
one on something we know nothing about – we’ve been IN
the EU so long, anyone who says they KNOW we’d be better
off in OR out is lying, plain and simple. And, should our criteria
even BE whether WE’D be ‘better off’ – or perhaps whether
the greater number of people would be? Don’t ask me. What?
Oh, you didn’t - right… Back in Funland, there’s plenty this
month to take your mind off such quandries: depending on
your age/sensibilities, you might be drawn to CBBC’s Mister
Maker, the top-notch techno show, TECHnique, with Dave
Clarke, the Inverness Science Festival, Loch Ness Etape, the
potty-mouthed puppets of Avenue Q, folk giants Altan, or
(technically next month) a brilliant new Swan Lake. Drumpf!

ART
Looking Good.
The Stalls Gallery at EDEN COURT is well worth a visit, or at least a rewarding
look at while waiting before shows at the venue and it continues its recent run
of excellent exhibitions with POISE AND REFLECTION [1] by JANE LEWIS. Muted
colours and powerful imagery predominate in elegant pieces that range from the
conventional to more experimental and avant-garde.
Up in Ullapool, the vibrant AN TALLA SOLAIS gallery gives you the opportunity to
see stars of the future with its JUST LANDED exhibition running until 01 MAY.
Showcasing some of the most exciting degree show work from the 2015 shows
in Dundee, Glasgow and Edinburgh, the exhibition includes works from a range
of disciplines in the Fine Art and Design schools with pieces by LORIE BALLAGE,
RACHEL BLAIR, GREIG COCKBURN, ROBIN CRAWFORD, AMY DUNNACHIE,
GREGOR HENDERSON, ELLIS O’CONNOR and EVE STOTESBURY. Details at
antallasolais.org
Of course you don’t have to be an aspiring professional to make paintings as will
be demonstrated at the SPEY ART GROUP’s Annual Exhibition at Grantown On
Spey Museum from 23 APR–07 MAY. Entry is free and as well as displaying some
lovely works, it might inspire you too to take up the brush.

Conflicts & Crowd Pleasers
With the sun hopefully coming out (any minute now...), and the Easter holidays well
underway, it is the time for the big blockbusters to emerge in earnest. Unsurprisingly,
Marvel are leading the charge with CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR [1] (29 APR Vue).
Oddly, just a month after Batman V Superman, this is another superhero film pitting
two good guys against each other – in this case Chris Evans’ titular war hero and
Robert Downey Jr’s Tony Stark, who clash over a proposed bill putting restrictions
on superheroes – did no-one ever read Watchmen?! The sheer number of characters
presents a danger of overcrowding, but the Russos did an excellent job with Cap’s
previous outing, and their pitch of the film as a “psychological thriller” is intriguing.
Thor’s left out of this one, but fans of Chris Hemsworth in armour can get their fix with
THE HUNTSMAN: WINTER’S WAR [3] (22 APR Vue), a spin-off from 2012’s Snow
White & The Huntsman, which keeps Hemsworth and Charlize Theron, loses Kristen
Stewart, and adds Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain. It looks like a souped-up, starstudded remake of Willow, and it will hopefully be as stupidly fun as that sounds.
There’s another re-imagining of a Disney classic with THE JUNGLE BOOK [2] (15 APR
Vue). Jon Favreau directs this remake of the beloved animation, starring an impressive
ensemble – including Ben Kingsley, Idris Elba, Scarlett Johansson, Bill Murray and (yay!)
Christopher Walken. And, some dodgy CGI…
Some other crowd-pleasing thrills can be found a little off the beaten track, including
JANE GOT A GUN [4] (22 APR Vue & EC), an addition to the current Western resurgence,
starring Natalie Portman as a woman defending her home and family from outlaws.
It’s been in development hell for close to five years, so we’ll see if it was worth the
wait. Perhaps the most unique bit of action on offer is HARDCORE HENRY [5] (08
APR Vue), an 80s-style shoot ‘em up shot entirely in first-person POV. It remains to be
seen if the daring gambit can sustain a feature film, but it certainly looks like the kind
of awesomely OTT entertainment we need more of. Lurking amid the big tentpoles is
a little film that might just surprise us all, namely MIDNIGHT SPECIAL [6] (15 APR
Vue). A sci-fi thriller from Mud writer/director Jeff Nichols, with a cast including Michael
Shannon, Kirsten Dunst and Adam (swoon) Driver, it fuses blockbuster spectacle to the
director’s trademark rural Americana. Could be the year’s big sleeper hit.
More grounded drama can be found in EYE IN THE SKY [7] (15 APR Vue, 29 APR EC),
a timely and gritty drone warfare thriller featuring an almighty array of talents ranging
from Helen Mirren to Aaron Paul to Captain Phillips’s Barkhad Abdi to Iain Glen to the
much-missed Alan Rickman. There’s further quality acting on show in Jean-Marc Vallee’s
DEMOLITION [8] (29 APR EC), a comedy-drama lead by Jake Gyllenhaal in what appears
to be another incredible performance from one of the finest talents of his generation.
The “heroic failure” of Eddie Edwards at the ‘88 Calgary Winter Olympics makes it to the
big screen with EDDIE THE EAGLE [9] (01 APR Vue, 08 - 21 APR EC), directed by Dexter
Fletcher, with Taron Egerton as Eddie himself. Should be a warm-hearted romp.
If you heard that the other big true-story film this month involved Elvis Presley meeting
Richard Nixon, you’d be inclined not to believe it. But it really happened, and now the story
gets the film treatment in Liza Johnson’s ELVIS & NIXON (29 APR Vue). Michael Shannon
is the former, Kevin Spacey is the latter. That should be all you need to know. That’s
just one of the esoteric offerings out there this April, which also include ANOMALISA
[10] (O1–07 APR EC), wherein Charlie Kaufman does existentialism. With puppets. Then
there’s HIGH-RISE [11] (15–21 APR EC), Ben Wheatley’s adaptation of JG Ballard’s
nightmarish satire, starring Tom Hiddlestone, Sienna Miller and Luke Evans. more>>>>

11

A couple more Inverness Film Festival highlights arrive on screens this month, namely
charming midlife study LEARNING TO DRIVE (22 APR Vue) and astonishing crime
thriller VICTORIA [12] (15–21 APR EC), which tells the story of a bank robbery in one
138 minute-long take. You have to see it to believe it.
A particularly intriguing treat at Eden Court is ARABIAN NIGHTS, a re-telling of the
ancient tales, drawing on modern events, told in three parts - THE RESTLESS ONE
(22/23/27 APR EC); THE DESOLATE ONE (29 Apr–01 May EC) and THE ENCHANTED
ONE (06–08 May). And more culture in BFI’s SHAKESPEARE 400* initiative – screening
film adaptations of the Bard. The selection is Baz Luhrmann’s modernised ROMEO +
JULIET (23 APR), another take on the same in WEST SIDE STORY (23 APR), ‘62’s
RICHARD III (28 APR) – accompanied by a live simulcast Q&A with star IAN MCKELLEN
– and two variants on Othello, namely Oliver Parker’s OTHELLO (30 APR) and ALL
NIGHT LONG (30 APR) with Patrick McGoohan and Richard Attenborough.

KIDS
Child’s Play
A trio of kids’ shows worth heading along to this month, in addition to the INVERNESS
SCIENCE FESTIVAL (29 APR–07 MAY, various locations), which you can read about on
our Specials page…
First up on 02 APR, at UNIVERSAL HALL, the Findhorn venue that’s booked some fine
shows in recent months, it’s MONKEY. Part of the Puppet Animation Festival and
presented by PuppetCraft, Monkey is inspired by the ancient Chinese folk story about
the adventures of a fantastical, comical superhero. Watch Monkey as he learns magic,
makes mayhem, flies on a cloud, plays tricks, defeats a dragon, dodges death, and eats
lots of peaches… all in search of a Great Secret! Brought to exuberant life by one of
England’s leading puppetry companies using exquisitely crafted marionettes, authentic
old Chinese shadow puppets and enchanting live music – snappy raps and witty words
written especially for PuppetCraft by the brilliant award winning poet Michael Rosen.
The Puppet Animation festival continues at UNIVERSAL HALL on 09 APR with THE
FISHERMAN AND THE SEAL. Presented by Alison Monaghan of Yugen Puppet Theatre,
this story of a lonely fisherman living in a small Scottish village by the sea and looking for
love uses charming hand-crafted puppets and striking shadow theatre to create a comic
story based on the myths and legends about the selkie, putting a charming and surprising
twist on this usually most tragic of Scottish folk tales.
Biggest event of the month for many of the young ‘uns and one that possibly already has
them giddy with excitement, is the visit of MISTER MAKER & THE SHAPES [1] to EDEN
COURT on 16 & 17 APR. Remarkably this is the first ever live theatre tour from one of
kids TV’s most popular figures and we expect exuberance will be unbound. Packed full
of art-related adventures there’ll be a big ‘make’ to take part in, songs to join in with, a
fabulous supporting cast, and of course, The Shapes, a cult foursome better known by
the names Circle, Square, Rectangle and Triangle..

THE FISHERMAN AND THE
SEAL @ Universal Hall,
Findhorn, 2pm. Part of the
Puppet Animation Festival and
presented by Alison Monaghan
of Yugen Puppet Theatre
this is the story of a lonely
fisherman living in a small
Scottish village by the sea
and looking for love. Things
never quite go according
to plans…sometimes true
love can be found in the
most unlikely of places…
and with the most unlikely of
soul mates! Using charming
handcrafted puppets and
striking shadow theatre Yugen

this comic story based on
the myths and legends

Ken Kelman: Crook-lock Man…
If you’re anything like me you’re
probably wondering what happened
to the little cheese I found in my
garden. You remember! I told you all
about it last time – how I woke up
one morning to discover a little round
cheese sitting outside my garden
shed – a cranberry flavoured one.
The cheese that is, not the shed. As
far as I’m aware sheds don’t come
in a variety of flavours, I suppose
technically they’re available in just
the one .. original .. or shed, which
I guess is probably kinda ‘woody’ in
taste – perhaps flavoured sheds is a
missed marketing opportunity. If as a
result of reading this you go on to be
a hugely successful flavoured-shed
entrepreneur – I think I deserve a
share of your profits as the originator
of the idea. I’m not greedy, ten
percent will do, after all you’ve done
most of the hard work convincing the
buying public that the flavour of their
garden shed matters.
Anyway, regarding the small white
abandoned cheese – I don’t know
what happened to it. When I checked
up on it a few days later it had simply
gone as mysteriously as it had arrived
in the first place. Destined to remain
one of life’s little conundrums…

Here’s another. I recently spotted a
car in a car park. I know, where else
might you expect to see a parked
car, and indeed what else might you
expect to see in a car park. This car
was slightly odd and what was slightly
odd about was this – it had “crook
lock” fitted over its steering wheel! A
crook-lock! On a fairly new car! You
have to wonder why a modern built
car would need such an outmoded
piece of technology to protect it from
car thieves. Presumably one which
isn’t of a high enough specification
to have a built-in steering lock ..
or door locks .. or indeed one of
those fancy key things for starting
the engine. The sort of car like you
see in bad 70’s cop shows, where,
once you’ve defeated the door lock
with and old coat hanger you simply
had to scrabble about under the
dashboard until you find a couple of
yellow wires, they’re always yellow
and conveniently already stripped,
which when wound together start
the car on the first attempt without
giving you a nasty electric shock. If
car’s low enough spec to warrant a
crook-lock it’s probably not worth the
expense of it. Maybe.

Perhaps, and I now believe this to
be the more likely explanation, the
car belonged to an enthusiastic
collector of old technology. Someone
who still listens to cassettes or
even more appropriately, 8-track
cartridges. I like to think crook-lock
man would motor on home listening
to AM radio after filling his car with
4-star at Scotland’s last remaining
Burmah petrol station. Arriving home
to a dinner of braised oxtail ready to
eat straight from his Slow-cooker.
Washed down with fresh home-made
lemonade from his SodaStream
and accompanied with a toastie
from his Breville sandwich maker.
He’d probably then settle in for the
evening with a nice glass or two of
Mateus Rosé poured from a bottle
that nestles in its own little raffia
basket. A bottle that later on that
very same evening he’d turn into a
handsome table lamp. But only after
he finished listening to his new Top
Of the Pops album, an album he’ll
keep in tip-top condition with his
Ronco Record-vac – never before
have dodgy covers of top pop tunes
re-recorded by session musicians to
avoid royalties, sounded so crystal
clear...
KEN

Keep up.

Shake Your Booty…

MUSIC

In 1994, DAVE CLARKE [1]’s
[1]’s ‘Red 1’ plus the follow-ups ‘2’ and 95’s ‘3’ put him firmly
on the techno map after fringe releases as Hardcore and Directional Force from the
turn of the decade. Techno’s seeds had sprouted it first shoots in Detroit 1988 from
pioneers like Juan Atkins and Derrick May, so Clarke was among the very first in the UK
to embrace this game-changing musical direction. Also in 1990, Detroit’s own KENNY
LARKIN [2] was making his initial releases (on giant Richie Hawtin’s Plus 8 label) and
Michigan’s Burden brothers (Lenny & Lawrence) made their debut ‘I Believe’ on Derrick
May’s own Transmat label, as OCTAVE ONE. Glasgow’s Lars Sandberg, meanwhile,
had been djing hip-hop and house since the late 80s and began releasing as FUNK
D’VOID from 1995 on Soma. So how lucky are you, dear people, to be able to catch
these four illustrious Techno grandees all in one place on one day – Steve Robertson’s
TECHnique takes place at IRONWORKS on SAT 30 APR and should NOT be missed.
Nicely offsetting all that electronic music, there are a host of really impressive
acoustic gigs: ALTAN [3] (DINGWALL TOWN HALL, 16 APR) are Irish folk giants (in
terms of reputation, not height) whose impact has been such that they’ve even
been pictured on a stamp in their native land! Expect excellence; LANDERMASON
[4] play SPECTRUM CENTRE on 08 APR. Multi-instrumentalist Fiona Lander
(vocals, piano, whistles, saxes, clarinet and recorder) and Paul Mason (guitars and
vocals) – hence the name – combine both traditional and contemporary folk with
jazz and other styles in their beautiful compositions and striking arrangements;
At DRUMNADROCHIT VILLAGE HALL on 01 APR the wonderful ex-Arab Strapper
AIDAN MOFFAT makes an appearance. It’s the very venue where he recorded the
live album to accompany his film, Where You’re Meant To Be, a warm-hearted and
open-armed journey through Scottish music, landscape and time, featuring the late
Sheila Stewart, last in a line of travelling folk royalty. Fitting then that he returns to
both show the film and provide musical accompaniment; NEWTON FAULKNER [5]
has tapped into some sort of collective appeal, as he’ll demonstrate when he
plays IRONWORKS on 05 APR. Really has to do something about that hair though.
MÀNRAN (IRONWORKS, 16 APR) meanwhile, are certainly making waves in the
world of traditional music, their mix of Gaelic and English songs invested with an
energy that revitalises the genre. A little further off, the acclaimed folk musician
MARTIN SIMPSON plays UNIVERSAL HALL on 01 MAY and GLEN URQUHART
PUBLIC HALL a day later.
There are a couple of interesting rock gigs in the form of Thurso’s excellent PURE
GRIEF at MAD HATTERS on 08 APR and MAN MADE [6] (featuring Johnny Marr’s
son, Nile, no less) at the same venue on 24 APR, while BIG COUNTRY’s chiming
anthems and returning Scouse oddbods SPACE should both get IRONWORKS
bouncing on 02 & 22 APR respectively.
Finally the city’s reputation for attracting prestigious classical guests continues
with the BBC SSO [7] concert at EDEN COURT on 15 APR when Tchaikovsky’s
scintillating Violin Concerto, will be played by the young American violinist and BBC
Radio 3 New Generation Artist ESTHER YOO…

but courageous British ski-jumper who never stopped believing in himself – even as an entire nation was
counting him out. With the help of a rebellious and charismatic coach, Eddie takes on the establishment
and wins the hearts of sports fans around the world by making an improbable and historic showing at the

LOST TREASURE

SAT 23 APR (N/C Recommended PG)
Directors Dawn Cine Group & Minttu Mäntynen
UK I 1956 & 2016 I 70 mins inc. Q&A
Assembled by filmmaker Minttu Mäntynen. Accompanied live by renowned musicians Drew Wright
(Wounded Knee) and Hamish Brown (Swimmer One). In 1956 a Glasgow-based socialist filmmaking
collective embarked on an ambitious project confronting the rural depopulation crisis in the Highlands.
Although 40 minutes of footage were shot across Sutherland and Caithness, the film was never finished.
A special new commission by Glasgow Short Film Festival for the 60th anniversary, Lost Treasure is a
beautifully atmospheric audio-visual performance responding to the abandoned film. Followed by a Q&A.
Supported by PRS for Music Foundation and part of CineScore Live, a touring season of live music and film events
supported by Film Hub Scotland. With thanks to National Library of Scotland Moving Image Archive.

JANIS: LITTLE GIRL BLUE (15)

EYE IN THE SKY (15)

FRI 29 APR & SUN 01 MAY

AD

FRI 29 APR – THU 05 MAY

Director Amy J. Berg Starring Janis Joplin, Cat Power

Director Gavin Hood Starring Helen Mirren, Alan Rickman

USA I 2015 I 104 mins I janismovie.com
Janis Joplin is one of the most revered and iconic rock & roll singers of all
time, a tragic and misunderstood figure who thrilled millions of listeners
and blazed new creative trails before her death in 1971 at age 27. Janis:
Little Girl Blue examines Joplin’s story in depth for the first time on film,
presenting an intimate and insightful portrait of a complicated, driven,
often beleaguered artist.

UK I 2016 I 102 mins
Helen Mirren stars as Colonel Katherine Powell, a military intelligence
officer commanding a drone operation to locate terrorists in Nairobi. When
she discovers that the terrorists are planning a suicide mission they are
marked for death instead. But just as pilot Steve Watts is set to destroy the
safe house, he sees a nine year old girl entering the kill zone. Eye in the Sky
is a fascinating look at how modern wars are waged from control rooms
thousands of miles from their targets. From the Oscar winning director of
Tsotsi.

Director Miguel Gomes Starring Crista Alfaiate, Adriano Luiz SEE ALL 3 FILMS FOR £20
PT/FR/DE/CH I 2015 I 125/131/125 mins I Portuguese, English, French, German and Mandarin with subtitles
Arabian Nights (As mil e uma noites) is probably this year’s most ambitious cinematic undertaking, and the most talked about film experience of the last
Cannes Film Festival. Inspired by the famous book of the same name, arthouse cult director Miguel Gomes (Tabu, Our Beloved Month of August) announces
with a title card that this film is not an adaptation of the book despite drawing on its structure. Arabian Nights' uses the framing device of the beautiful
young Scheherazade telling tale after tale in order to keep her murderous husband Shahryār from killing her – but that’s where the similarities end…

SHAKESPEARE 400

As the world celebrates Shakespeare 400 years after his death, BFI explores how

screening of Richard III featuring a live simulcast post-show Q&A with Ian McKellen.

From the Royal Academy of Arts, London & the Cleveland Museum of Art.
From the exhibition walls to the wonder and beauty of artists’ gardens like
Giverny and Seebüll, the film takes a magical and widely travelled journey
to discover how different contemporaries of Monet built and cultivated modern
gardens to explore expressive motifs, abstract colour, decorative design and
utopian ideas.

Oi – people who we vote for to represent us!
(and public bodies funded by instuitutions run by
people who we vote for to represent us…)
Is Inverness going backwards?
Delivery charges: An increasing number of delivery companies

and online sites are refusing to deliver to the Highlands - not just the
islands, but central IV addresses (ie mainland Britain) - or charging unfair
surcharges not charged for sending the other way!

Broadband: the number of suppliers of broadband has reduced for
many rural residents close to Inverness, with several big players opting
not to offer broadband and phone services to anyone other than fibre
customers. Whilst subsea cables are being provided to bring next-gen
80Mbps superfast fibre optic broadband to island communities, people
living within half an hour of the city centre are suffering with dial-uplike broadband speeds, dropped by mainstream suppliers (Virgin, Talk
Talk) and punted onto expensive contracts (charging more for slower
connections) and only guaranteeing connections at less than 1Mbps!
So, WHAT you gonna do about it?!

SPECIALS
Raise A Glass To Science!
Amazingly, there was a time not so long ago when science considered a fusty terrain
fit only for losers. A time when ‘geek’ was an insult rather than proud accolade. A
time when it wasn’t, well, sexy. That’s all changed these days with a plethora of
science shows in the media, Tim Peake whizzing around in space and coding being
a discipline that young folk positively scramble to master. Strange times indeed.
And INVERNESS SCIENCE FESTIVAL is capitalising on that new-found interest.
Last year’s event proved a huge success, so it’s back in various venues from 29
APR–07 MAY. Opening with a lecture at the new University of the Highlands and
Islands STEM HUB on Clouds and Climate Change, there are plenty more talks
over the ensuing week. There’s also an extended FAMILY SCIENCE BANK HOLIDAY
WEEKEND with events at Simpsons Garden Centre, Tiso’s, Waterstones and the
University of the Highlands Forestry school, plus the popular FAMILY DAY on 07
May at Inverness Leisure when robots will take pride of place. Prior, we assume to
conquering the world and making us their slaves. Full details at uhi.ac.uk/isf
If all that makes you feel like a stiff drink, you might as well learn to appreciate
what you’re imbibing and the perfect opportunity to do that comes at NIP 2016,
the Festival of Whisky & Gin running from 29 MAR–02 APR. There are all sorts of
spirit-related events going on, which can be found at nipscotland.com, but perhaps
the most interesting is on the evening of 01 APR when there will be simultaneous
whisky and gin tours around Inverness with tastings along the way. At the end of
the evening the two groups will meet up at Hoots for much slightly
tipsy fun. Or kick off like Roundheads against Cavaliers.
Perhaps raise a glass to the Jacobites instead
– particularly as this month marks the
270TH ANNIVERSARY OF CULLODEN
on 16 APR. There’s a special
commemoration at the battle site
on the day itself, plus an ongoing
special exhibition with related
resources at the Highland
Archive & Registration Centre.
Plus, if you want to learn more
about the significance and
context of the event, we can
heartily recommend the newly
released
tome,
“Culloden:
Scotland’s Last Battle” by
Trevor Royle. Well worth a read.

SPORT
The cycling season’s underway, with Geraint Thomas having polished off Paris-Nice
and big things expected in the Grand Tours and Rio Olympics, meaning that the
sport looks like becoming even more popular than ever. And up here is no exception
with this year’s ETAPE LOCH NESS [1], which takes place on 24 APR, filling up in
record time. Unsurprising because the event, now in its third edition, offers over
100km of closed roads and a beautiful location, starting and finishing in Inverness
and taking in a lochside route. There’s an early start and a finish around lunchtime,
with a dedicated “village” at Eden Court. And it’s all for Macmillan. Chapeau! For
details of where to watch, head to etapelochness.com
There’s sporting activity of all sorts this month, none more curious than MAN
VS HORSE on 17 APR. Not some sort of bizarre gastronomic challenge response
to someone saying “I could eat a horse”, rather a race twixt people and equines
finishing at Loch Ness Riding, Drummond Farm, Dores. There’s a £100 prize and a
commemorative Quaich up for grabs, plus a definitive ruling on whether horses or
humans are better. More at lochnessriding.co.uk
BAG THE PIPE sounds equally odd and frankly, after the whole horse thing, we were
prepared for it to be absolutely anything. In fact it’s a snowsport event at Cairngorm
on 16 APR. And not just any event, but the first half pipe contest on UK snow. Now
in its second year, it’ll attract some of the keenest competitors around and further
demonstrate that instead of spending hundreds of pounds to look for snow abroad,
it makes far more sense to appreciate the idyllic locale on our doorstep.
Finally, congratulations from all here to ROSS COUNTY on their spirited League Cup win,
making a bit of history by giving the club their first trophy and ensuring that, until May
at least, two of the three Scottish ones are in the Highlands (with the third potentially
ending up in the North as well thanks to Aberdeen’s tilt at the title). ICT will be looking
to hang onto the Scottish Cup and if they negotiate a tricky replay against, of all people,
Hibs, they’re due to meet DUNDEE UTD at home in the semi final on 16 APR. A welcome
distraction from a season that’s rather fallen apart, so let’s hope they don’t get sucked
into a relegation battle.

<< Scottish Ballet return to Eden Court in early May (04–07 MAY), with their
very special new production of SWAN LAKE, envelope-pushingly choreographed
by David Dawson. It’s sure to be a hot-seller, so we thought we’d give you a
prod about it now. Dawson has said that for inspiration for this piece, he kept
going back to Zbigniew Herbert’s poem, ‘Study of the Object’, so here’s a slice
to pique your interest:

34

“obey the counsels / of the inner eye
do not yield / to murmurs mutterings smackings
it is the uncreated world / crowding before the gates of your canvas
angels are offering / the rosy wadding of clouds
trees are inserting everywhere / slovenly green hair
kings are praising purple / and commanding their trumpeters to gild
even the whale asks for a portrait
obey the counsels of the inner eye / admit no-one”

Puppets For Grown Ups

THEATRE

It wasn’t too long ago that the ace puppet musical for adults, AVENUE Q [1], last
came to EDEN COURT, but it’s returning from 26–30 APR. It’s a pleasant surprise
to see it back so quickly, especially since it gives plenty more folk a chance to
experience its whip-smart appeal. Created by Jeff Marx and Robert Lopez (Cocreator of ‘Book Of Mormon’ and, slightly astonishingly, writer of the songs for
Disney’s ‘Frozen’) it’s is an irresistibly charming, though irrepressibly cheeky,
musical which tells the story of the loveable characters on a downtown New York
street trying to make sense of life’s burning issues. Those characters played by
puppets. And not exactly shy about speaking (or singing) their mind. The whole
thing’s a delight though, as we say, not for the easily offended. No surprise that
it’s swept up awards across the world. Highly recommended.
As is I AM THOMAS [2] at EDEN COURT from 12–16 APR. A collaboration between
acclaimed poet Simon Armitage, Told by an Idiot, National Theatre Scotland and
Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh, it’s an inventive creation telling the true tale
of the last person in Britain to be executed for blasphemy. That happened in
Edinburgh, “a cold town on the edge of civilisation, in very much the Year of
Our Lord, 1696” and it’s that world we’re given a glimpse of. A world where the
church has spies everywhere and you keep your counsel and choose your words
with care. Unless you are Thomas Aikenhead – a loud-mouthed, smart-arsed
and likeable student at the university. A man in the wrong place at absolutely
the wrong time. I Am Thomas looks like it could be brilliant.
A look back at another age, albeit not one so distant, comes in the form
of DALLOWAY [3] (EDEN COURT, 17 APR). Performed by Rebecca Vaughan
(Female Gothic, I, Elizabeth, Austen’s Women), this adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s
celebrated map of hearts, minds and memories offers a compellingly feminine
response to the aftermath of the First World War in middle and upper class
London, a time when the modern world, with its loss of innocence, was born.
If dance is more your thing, you’ll be pleased to learn that SCOTTISH DANCE
THEATRE [4] are coming to EDEN COURT on 29 APR with the double bill of
Dreamers and Process Day. The former by Anton Lachky explores links between
reality and surrealism in the dreamers of the title, highlighting the beauty and
power of the moving body with his quirky and humorous style, while the latter,
a world premiere of a piece by Sharon Eyal and Gai Behar (who have created
a stream of critically acclaimed, original works for some of the world’s leading
companies) promises “visceral, animal, androgyny”. Better get along then!
Finally a word for the marvellously acerbic Canadian comic TOM STADE [5] who
comes to EC on 20 APR. Uncompromising, edgy and fabulously inventive, he’s
always a treat.

EATING
OUT

Jury’s Inn Inverness
Millburn Rd, Inverness 0161 774 2986 / 01463 239666
Does changing the name of a hotel
ever work? There are (seemingly
frequent) changes of ownership or
operating group that means you see
a different name or logo plastered
above the entrance or to the side of
the building, but in reality folk round
here always talk about the Caley or the
Kingsmills or the Station hotels, largely
ignoring the comings and goings of
yer Marriots or Ramada Jarvises. So
presently the Thistle Hotel – the big
block on the left towards the bypass
end of Millburn Road – is the Jury’s Inn
Inverness, which is a gift for reviewing
purposes, more of which later…
There are some immutable truths
about hotels and lunches. Every hotel
will tell you they could be busier for
lunch. The hotel food proposition is
aimed first and foremost at evening
dining and more specifically for guests.
They present a captive market (not
quite literally, but as close as you can
legally get these days) and that means
guaranteed numbers and people who
are not comparing prices with places
outside the hotel doors. So hotel food
tends to be less imaginative (not totally
universal), less quality (thankfully

much less universal these days) and
more expensive (entirely universal, if
matching like for like). Hotel guests
have a pesky habit of being out during
the day (someone’s got to fill all those
Spa coaches and attend all those
business meets), so hotel lunchtimes
(save for conferencey-type hotels) often
feel like the Marie Celeste.
In accordance with section two of
The Law of Hotel Food, the (mildly
interesting, octagonal-shaped) dining
room is shut during the day, leaving the
bar area to cater (arf) for the lunchtime
trade. Section four of said law states
that if a hotel is part of a chain, then it
must offer a colourfully branded, clearly
presented menu featuring ubiquitous
headings (Lite Bites, Burgers & Hot
Dogs, Pizza & Pasta, Sandwiches,
Salads, Desserts) and contents (yer
Pulled Porks, Fish Goujons, Sirloin
Steaks, etc). Like gravity, Jury’s Inn
Inverness adheres helplessly to the
aforementioned laws – they can no
more offer a daily changing menu
with creative culinary decisions than
Newton’s apple can fall sideways from
the tree. But at least that means that
we know exactly where to look for fallen

apples and what we’ll be able to order
for lunch.
However, innocent until proven guilty;
are Jury’s Inns guilty of providing a
homogonised characterless lunch
option or do they offer a pleasing array
of high quality food in comfortable
surroundings? Let’s find out…
The bar area has the feel of an airport
lounge, open to the hotel foyer and part
of quite a vast space - but as the hotel
and its staff go about their business
quietly, there is no audible interference
from other areas. Decor is conservative
but pleasant with neat, clean tables
and chairs and a sofa area also.
Curiously, a shortfall projector beams
a silent Sky News from the ceiling to
wall. We are mighty glad of that lack
of audio but one wonders what is the
point exactly of showing the soundless
images? Not a lot of staff are on hand
in the bar, but the room is worked
efficiently enough, no-one waiting for
long to be attended to or order – longer
waits are in store for meals to arrive etc
but not so much you’d complain about.
The service is pleasant, unfussy
and uncomplicated - cutlery and

39

drinks are brought without interruption
or disturbance.

tart side – perhaps leaving that in its
own serving jug would be a good idea.

We order starters from the Light Bites
section; mains from the Favourites
and Salads section – and, of course,
a couple of Desserts. We don’t like to
let you down in that department, oh no.

A staff changeover made for a delayed
foray into dessertland – but we are
patient types when it comes to pudding,
no fuss was made. There are, inevitably,
Chocolate Brownies and Sticky Toffee
Puddings and Cheese or Ice Cream
Selections but we opted for the two
slightly less obvious choices, Bakewell
Tart and Apple Tart Tatin, both choices
offer Ben and Jerry’s Vanilla Ice Cream.
The former in fact comprises two tartlets
each topped with a ‘breast’ of ice cream,
and two swabs of raspberry jus either
side. Tartlets are really better suited
to wetter content as the high pastry-tofilling ratio with a bakewell filling makes
for a rather dry, unlush experience. The
upside-down apple pie is more moist
(extending to the thin pastry base/top)
but is pleasantly sweet and mixes mildly
toffee-ish flavours with the fruit. It feels
much less like an ‘out of the packet’
dessert at least, although the request
to replace ice cream with cream was
probably lost in translation - and the
Ben & Jerry’s sadly sits in a rather unnecessary, dry sugary wafer basket.

Freshly Baked Dough Balls with Hot
Garlic Butter Dip are indeed fresh and
(save for a little limp, unnecessary,
greenery) quite pleasing – a little
seasoning livening up the plump halfdozen balls. The Roasted Sweet
Potato, Carrot and Coriander Soup is
sweet and substantial – all promised
flavours are present with perhaps a little
leaning to the carrot. The accompanying
Warm Pitta Bread is indeed warm,
but is, unexpectedly, crispy – I’d have
preferred it soft, but, hey…
My dining partner is one of those
annoyingly clever sorts who always know
the name of the person you’re trying to
think of and the film they were in, and
what year that came out. You know the
sort. He’s charming and upbeat about
most things and pretty easily pleased
when it comes to food – yet when he
has something particularly to his taste,
you can definitely discern the added
enthusiasm. His Thai Green Vegetable
Curry with Jasmine Rice looked fairly
undistinguished – the rice dome served
from an upturned bowl a nice touch
alongside an unassuming-loooking bowl
of beige curry – but boy, did it pack a
flavour punch. A latent heat that builds
long after the mouthful, with a rich array
of flavours, all nicely subdued by the
delicate rice. A good dish.

Being late winter, I plumped for a
salad – Beetroot and Feta Salad, to
be precise, with Spinach, Walnuts,
Pomegranate and a Balsamic
Dressing. At nearly £12, this is an
example of the hotel pricing conundrum
– one can’t help but feel that it is a bit
on the high side for a lunchtime salad.
However, this was a good salad with a
great variety of flavours and textures
– the strong feta balanced by the
calming leaves, the sweetness of the
walnuts and pomegranate pearls and
particularly the soft beetroot chunks.
As you approach the bottom of the
bowl, the concentration of balsamic
dressing increases substantially,
leaving the overall balance a bit on the

So, the meal is done, assessments
must be made. On the plus side, all
parts of the meal were palatable, the
environs were quiet and quite private
for a big space, whilst on the down
side, some servings were entirely
unremarkable, prices are hotel-high and
the whole thing took about 20 minutes
longer than a lunch ought to. And here’s
where the hotel name helps me out –
for whilst they could be condemned if
we had an out-and-out bad experience,
or declared innocent and free if the
meal had been a triumph – for now, for
Jury’s Inn, the jury’s out.

GARDEN OF ELKS special limited release:
‘A Different Sigh’ is the new EP from Garden Of Elks and can be considered a
companion piece to last year’s critically acclaimed debut album ‘A Distorted Sigh’
The 3 tracks here showcase a stripped down lo-i sound and is
close to how Elks songs begin life as simple demos. The songs
were recorded in Niall’s bedroom, here in the Highlands of Scotland.
A limited number of cassettes will be available (£4/tape)
from April 8th at: gardenofelks.bigcartel.com
and you can buy a digital copy (£3) here:
gardenofelks.bandcamp.com/releases

At the moment Elks are busy working on their second album and
are ever edging closer to the weird, twisted pop sound in their minds.
Meanwhile, see the video here:

total purchase price will be paid in addition to
any Stamp Duty that might have been paid at the
pre 1st April rate. By way of example if a property
was being purchased pre 1st April at a price of
£175,000.00 the Stamp Duty payable would
have been £600.00. If the Additional Dwelling
Supplement applies then the Stamp Duty payable
will be £5,850.00. Clearly this is quite a significant
increase ..
The supplement will apply if you purchase a
property in Scotland but own or partly own with
others a property in Scotland or elsewhere in the
UK for example if a couple jointly owned their
main residence and wanted to jointly purchase a

property
flat with their son or daughter then because the
parents already partly owned a property this flat
would be deemed to be an Additional Dwelling
and so the supplement would apply even if that
property was going to be the main residence of
the child.
Clearly the new supplement is slightly more
complex that might on the face of it first appear.
There are some reliefs from the Supplement
available in terms of the legislation but it is
important before making a decision to purchase a
second property that buyers seek legal advice as
to the possible additional financial consequences
of that.
