…Highland Style!
It is always nice to start the New Year with some good news; and the announcement that Inverness and the Highlands are going to play a major role in Scotland’s 2014 Homecoming celebrations, is certainly that. The Highland Homecoming (Tilleadh dhan Ghàidhealtachd) will last from 1st September to 31st October. The Festival will start with the Northern Meeting Piping Championships and the World Sheepdog Championships; before the Highland Clans arrive in Inverness the following weekend to lead a Torchlight Procession through the streets of Inverness to mark the 150th Anniversary of the opening of Northern Meeting Park and the start of a world record breaking Masters World Championships Highland Games (MWC2014) featuring 190 competitors. It really will be an unforgettable weekend with the climax of the 2014 Blas Festival, Shinty’s Camanachd Cup Final and the Kirking of the Council all adding to the fun. Full details of the Highland Homecoming programme can be found at www. invernessfestivals.com or at www.whatsonhighlands.com and you can expect more events to be added to the packed programme which already includes the Highlands Strongest Man, the Loch Ness Marathon and the Inverness Street Theatre Festival to name but a few. Of course The Homecoming Halloween Show is more than just the end of the Highland Homecoming Festival. Revolutionary Spirit
As a venue that’s been kicking over the barricades and crushing all opposition for some time now, it’s apt that the IG:LU XMAS SHOW is called F1RST AGAINST THE WALL. Running from FRI 13–FRI 20 DEC then from TUE 07–FRI 24 JAN on the top floor at 19 CHURCH STREET, it warns us to “prepare for anything”, but if past winter shows are anything to go by, one certainty is that there’ll be some stimulating work on show. Featuring some of the area’s most boundary-pushing artists, including experienced artists MICHAEL FORBES, CHRIS (SIMPSONS ARTIST), SHAUN MACDONALD, ROGER & REID, PAMELA TAIT and RICHARD MADDALENA alongside new and developing talents like DOUGIE SHARPE, LADYFACE, HOLLIPOPS, CHARIS EDWARD WELLS, PENNY DEVERELL and a room curated by the TWO:8 COLLECTIVE ( a new artists studios venture at 28 Church Street led by Joni Phippin from Hung) there’ll be a plethora of thrilling, challenging stuff. FILM
COMEDY DOCUMENTARY DRAMA FAMILY ROMANCE

Oscar Time.
It was during the UK premiere of MANDELA: THE LONG WALK TO FREEDOM [1] (03 JAN) that the great man’s death was announced, meaning that even more attention is now being given to the biopic based on Nelson’s autobiography. And perhaps even more likelihood that IDRIS ELBA, playing the role of Madiba, will find himself anointed with an Oscar. Initial reviews suggest that it’s a powerful portrayal, although steering well clear of any controversy. That film is just one of many notable releases this month as the glut of US films making sure they’re out in time for Academy Award nominations, come to UK screens. This looks like being one of the tightest battles in years, with another film examining black history, Steve McQueen’s 12 YEARS A SLAVE [2] (10 JAN) also impressing critics, particularly the performances from CHIWETEL EJIOFOR and LUPITA NYONG’O alongside established stars BRAD PITT, BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH (swoon) and MICHAEL FASSBENDER (semi-swoon). Look out too for awards for THE RAILWAY MAN [3] (01 JAN) (COLIN FIRTH and NICOLE KIDMAN in the true story of a victim from World War II’s “Death Railway” looking for those responsible for his torture), AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY [4] (17 JAN) (CUMBERBATCH popping up again, this time alongside MERYL STREEP and JULIA ROBERTS in a black comedy about a dysfunctional Oklahoma family) and INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS (24 JAN) (CAREY MULLIGAN aka Mrs Mumford starring in the COEN BROTHERS’ latest, looking back at the birth of modern folk music in 1961 Greenwich Village). THE WOLF OF WALL STREET [5] (EDEN COURT, 17-30 JAN) is by all accounts a return to form for America’s greatest living filmmaker, MARTIN SCORSESE, based on the real-life account of a corrupt stockbroker’s rise and fall. It’s also the fifth collaboration between the director and his current muse LEONARDO DICAPRIO, whereas Marty’s old favourite ROBERT DE NIRO seems these days to be acting his way on autopilot through whatever he’s offered, content just to take the pay cheques. And this month that means LAST VEGAS [6] (03 JAN) (in which, alongside MICHAEL DOUGLAS, KEVIN KLINE and MORGAN FREEMAN, he plays the part of a sixty-something throwing a bachelor party in Vegas) and, depressingly, GRUDGE MATCH [7] (24 JAN) (in which pair of ageing boxing rivals are coaxed out of retirement to fight one final bout -- 30 years after their last match. He’s up against SLY STALLONE which makes for the terrifying prospect of Raging Bull meets Rocky, without any of the greatness/ redeeming features of either). And the film doesn’t end there this month. Look out for the INVERNESS FILM FANS MIDWINTER SUN SEASON at EDEN COURT (including the French classic PLEIN SOLEIL on 21 JAN), the BANFF MOUNTAIN FILM FESTIVAL on 30 JAN at EDEN COURT and the excellent KINGUSSIE FOOD ON FILM FESTIVAL from 30 JAN-02 FEB with loads of grubrelated movies including DELICATESSEN, VOLVER and TAMPOPO. That’ll Teach ‘Em…
Presumably the kids will be jiggered after all the excitement of the holiday season (concluding perhaps with the WEE HOT HIGHLAND FLING on 31 DEC or one of the last few SLEEPING BEAUTY panto perfomances at Eden Court - until 06 JAN), which is why there’s very little for them to do in January. Although this is the time for resolutions and all that, so maybe learning an instrument is in order. Or embracing Highland heritage. If so, then there’s the perfect opportunity to combine the two with FÈIS FARR at FARR COMMUNITY HALL on FRI 31 JAN (then on the last Fridays of Feb and Mar) from 7.30–9pm, providing workshops for young people aged 8 to 18 in a wide range of subjects at different levels: fiddle, chanter, tin whistle, guitar, Gaelic song, bodhran and more. Cost is £4 for the first child and £2 for siblings. There’s also a FÈIS BHEAG for wee ones aged 5–7.

MON 30 DEC

Vestra casts a spell on the baby, proclaiming that on her 18th Birthday, she will prick her finger on a spinning wheel and die! Sleeping Beauty tells the tale of the beautiful Princess Belle who is cursed at her Christening by the wicked Fairy Carabosse, which means that on her 18th birthday she will prick her finger on a spinning wheel and die. The good Fairy Azuriel offers some hope. She changes the spell to ensure that the Princess won’t die but will fall into an enchanted sleep for 100 years from which she will only wake if kissed by the one she loves. Join Nanny

Ken Kelman: Base urges
Hi. If I’ve got my calculations right you should be reading this during that awkward no-man’s land between Christmas and New Year, between turkey and steak pie, between festive frolics and more festive frolics. The bit where you have to go back to work for just one or two days during a fortnight off because your holiday allowance won’t stretch or there’s no one to provide cover. If that’s the case then “Merry Christmas” for last week. If everyone got what they wanted we should by enjoying world peace and there’ll be a pony in your back yard… happily munching all that long grass… though you’ll just now be realising that, no way is there enough grass to sustain a pony for very long and shortly the enormous bills for straw will start arriving… not to mention the stable that needs building and all that tack you’ve still to buy… but hey (pardon the pun) - your daughter’s worth it. It’s traditional at this time of year to look back and reflect on the past 12 months. For me they included a ‘pretty significant’ birthday and that in many ways was the turning point, the whatam-I-doing-with-my-life moment and the point at which I decided I should be using more of the knowledge I had to learn when I did my degree all those many years ago - you know so that those particular four years of my life won’t have been wasted. At college we learned what everyone and his dog now knows from birth but for us was a fairly new concept: computers use a series of 0s and 1s to do their, well, computing I suppose. They deal in what’s called binary or base 2 numbers, e.g. 1110 (or as we’d usually say, 14).This is all well and good but a bit cumbersome, so we use other number systems such as hexadecimal to deal with bytes, kilobytes, mega-bytes and now terra-bytes etc. Hex, as it’s known, is base 16 – it uses the digits 0-9 plus the letters A-F so 1110 (or 14) becomes ‘E’ - simple really. And there’s much fun to be had with hex numbers!… popular boy-band ‘1D’ are hex for 29… the Tesco clothing range FF is 255 - hours of amusement if you’re that way inclined, which I am. Anyway, in honour of my years of diligent study I have decided to start counting my birthdays in hexadecimal - as of this year, if anyone asks my age, and they don’t specify they want it in decimal, I shall say 32 and leave them to decided if they want to create a scene by questioning it. Forget age-defying makeup, counting in hexadecimal can fight the major sign of ageing by literally making the number of years you’ve been around seem smaller. CAUTION: whilst using alternative number bases can be great fun… it won’t always work to your advantage. For example if you’re 28 (decimal) this becomes 1C in hex which will only confuse things. Also you must be careful which number base you use… my age in octal (base 8) is 62 which isn’t doing me any favours at all! In general though, for birthdays you’ll seem younger if you use a number base greater than 10. KEN

MUSIC
CLASSICAL CLUBBING FOLK JAZZ/WORLD ROCK

Sounds Old & New…
NEWTON FAULKNER [1] has much to answer for, not least endowing legitimacy on that crusty-round-the-campfire-with-acoustic-guitar-playing-Kumbayah vibe. Which in turn spawned Ed Sheeran. Posterity won’t forget who’s to blame. Indubitably, Faulkner’s Highland tour, which takes in IRONWORKS on 26 JAN, will be packed to the rafters. Meh. But, hey, if you love him (and we know some of you that do), enjoy it! Also bound to be popular is THE VATERSAY BOYS [2] doing a two night stint at IRONWORKS on 24 & 25 JAN when bouncing along to their rumbustuous contemporary take on traditional sounds will be nigh on compulsory. And more rootsy ebullience comes from GORDIE MAKEEMAN & HIS RHYTHM BOYS [3] at EDEN COURT on 31 JAN as the fellow nicknamed Crazy Legs brings his mix of frenzied jigging and bluegrass vocals to town, accompanied by irresistibly uplifting music. They’ve won a whole load of awards and this shindig should show why. It’s a good month for music at EDEN COURT with another interesting prospect looking like being NORTHERN LIGHTS on 18 JAN. The enterprise brings together six world-class musicians from Scotland, Northern Ireland and Scandinavia in a cross-cultural celebration of new music that bridges the divide between folk and classical, the traditional and the avant-garde in six new compositions. Should be good. January also marks the start of a BATTLE OF THE BANDS competition at THE EAGLE, taking place every FRI and SAT throughout the month. Eighteen slots will be made available at the Baron Taylors Street venue in the city centre for musicians across from the Highlands to showcase their skills where they will be judged by an eclectic pool of local tastemakers and musicians. The grand finale has been set for FRI 31, when the victorious band will be presented with a prize that includes recording a single at Gargleblast Studios in Hamilton with producer Andy Miller (Mogwai, The Fratellis) and the shooting of a professional video courtesy of Caithness based film company Big Box Network, to be directed by Charlie Wilson. For more see facebook.com/eaglebar.inverness Friday and Saturday each week also find a plethora of new bands from all over Scotland playing MAD HATTERS and, even if you may not have heard of them before, there are often some real gems to be found. This month, for their names alone, we’ll be heading along on SAT 25 JAN for POP CAMPAIGN [4] and DOUNREAY BEACH PARTY [5]. The following week, on FRI 31 JAN, again at MAD HATTERS, top local combo LITTLE MILL OF HAPPINESS [6] will hopefully be proving just why we believe they’re on the brink of doing something very special..

MARK STUMBLES: Imperial Music
What I’ve Been Listening T To… o…

18

For anyone who loves music, record shops are a unique source of wonder and delight, at least if you’re of a certain generation. These days, unfortunately, as Spotify et al stomp their jackboots across the cultural consciousness, record shops as physical places of pilgrimage are a dying breed. Social networking means you don’t need to spend your Saturday afternoons mooching about and flicking through the racks with like minded souls in the hope of discovering something that’ll change your life. And that’s sad. Nevertheless there are some admirable souls still flying the flag and we have one in our midst in the form of MARK STUMBLES, owner of IMPERIAL MUSIC in the Victorian Market. Having started Imperial in Bristol back in 1996, he built such a reputation for the place that it was named one of the ten best independent record shops in the country before its closure in 2004. Bristol’s loss was our gain though and in April 2009 he moved up here, opening Imperial deep in the bowels of the market and creating a wonderland for record lovers, providing a totally different experience to the corporate homogeneity of the likes of HMV. Enduring cold winters and driven by a genuine love for music, even he admits that it’s sometimes hard to be optimistic about the future of physically selling things, particularly CDs. One glimmer of light though comes in the form of vinyl, the format that seems to be making a comeback and on some days accounts for almost 80% of his sales. No wonder as some of the stuff in his shop, particularly the lavish box sets are truly

things of beauty in a way that an MP3 download will never be. Check out the shop and show your support for a place that makes the world that little bit better. And in the meantime, here are some of the songs that Mark loves to listen to right now:
WHITE DENIM – ‘Pretty Green’ Saw these boys in Glasgow recently– tiny venue + beer + one of the best live bands in the world – great! From the Jeff Tweedy produced new album ‘Corsicana Lemonade’ DAUGHN GIBSON – ‘The Pisgee Nest’ From this year’s excellent Sub Pop album ‘Me Moan’; this 6ft.5” ex-trucker from Pennsylvania creates deliciously dark Americana – Scott Walker meets Chris Isaak on the set of Twin Peaks? JON HOPKINS – ‘Open Eye Signal’ There have been some fine electronica releases this year, but Jon Hopkins’ ‘Immunity’ album on Domino is inspired (it landed him a Mercury nomination) – shifting between up tempo and ambient, it’s constantly engaging. STEVE MASON – ‘Lonely’ Stand out track from the ex-Beta Band leader’s ‘Monkey Minds’ album - our biggest seller of the year. Such a shame he cancelled that Ironworks gig BOMBINO – ‘Azamane Tiliade’ The Tuareg tribe from Northern Africa have been responsible for some mighty desert blues in recent years, but this is up there with the best. It’s from his second album ‘Nomad’, produced by the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, a wonderful listen from start to finish Read full interview and see YouTube clips of all of the above at: whatsonhighlands.com IMPERIAL MUSIC, Victorian Market, Inverness 01463 718 472 www.imperial-music.com

Talk Things Through.
One of the many things we’d like to see in 2014 is the lowering of the age demographic at the plethora of talks that take place each month in the area. As even a cursory dip into BBC4 proves, the unlikeliest of subjects can be interesting if presented well and while we’re not claiming that everyone giving a talk will be able to engage as impressively, you’re bound to leave knowing something you didn’t know before. And that has to be good, right? If only for your future standing in the Pub Quiz team. So, tear yourselves away from the Xbox and give some of the following a go this month: MYSTERIOUS LANDS-LEGENDS AND ARCHAEOLOGY OF ETHIOPIA (CULLODEN FREE CHURCH, 09 JAN, 2pm); KANGAROOS AND DIDGERIDOOS, in which Paul Hibberd will talk about the wildlife, history and culture he encountered whilst working as a National Park Ranger in Australia (NAIRN FREE CHURCH, 10 JAN, 7.30pm); the enigmatically titled CHURCHILL AND THE MAN FROM FORTROSE (SEAFORTH ROOMS, FORTROSE, 13 JAN, 7.30pm) from Iain Maclean; PROBLEM - WHAT PROBLEM?, an Inverness Field Club talk about native versus invasive species (NEW MILBURN ACADEMY, 15 JAN) and SWANNING AROUND IN SCOTLAND AND ICELAND, an RSPB talk on Whooper Swans (FRASER PARK BOWLING CLUB, 30 JAN). As you can see, nothing if not diverse. For admission details, see our website at whatsonhighlands.com If you fancy turning your hand to something a bit more physical, how about taking part in WE WANT YOUR LOAF, part of the KINGUSSIE FOOD ON FILM festival. Taking advantage of the deserved success of the mighty Great British Bake off, this is a competition to find the best freshly-baked loaf. There won’t be the kind words of the saintly Mary Berry or the killer gaze of Paul Hollywood, but VIP judges are promised. To participate register using the form at kingussiefoodonfilm.co.uk before 24 JAN. And, just in case you need an excuse for a little more New Year celebration, 25 JAN is BURNS NIGHT. If you want to see all that’s happening haggis/dram wise, again whatsonhighlands.com is the place to look.

And, just in case you need an excuse for a little more New Year celebration, 25 JAN is BURNS NIGHT. Many of you will be going down the traditional route of drams, pipes and poetry, while others might be plumping for the stripped-down version involving a Haggis Supper from the chippy and a bottle of Buckfast. If you want to celebrate in style though, then why not participate in the BURNS NIGHT event organised by the EDEN COURT CREATIVE team. Start in the city centre at 6.45pm with a Haggis Highland Games (whatever that may be), followed by a procession through the streets of the city centre, across the river and over to Eden Court for an eye-catching outdoor projection display, plus bite-sized drama performances based around key moments in the Bard’s life. The night’s celebration climaxes with a traditional ceilidh in the OneTouch Theatre where the organisers promise to teach you a few standard dances like Strip The Willow and The Dashing White Sergeant. There are also ceilidhs and Burns Night celebrations at the Glen Mhor Hotel (tickets £14.50 from www.reelceilidhs.moonfruit.com) and, slightly further afield, at the award-winning CLACHAIG INN, GLENCOE.

SPORT
ATHLETIC BALL COMBAT EXTREME RACING

Mush! Mush!
It’s that time of the year again when you think it might be rather a fine idea to buy yourself a husky, such is the beauty of the canine competitors in the AVIEMORE SLED DOG RALLY at GLENMORE FOREST Park on SAT 25 & SUN 26. From just 20 entries in 1984, the event has grown to be one of the most important dates on the calendar for the self-styled “UK Mushing Family”. Over 200 teams are expected this year, with those gorgeous dogs pulling sleds over a picture postcard course that may even, if meteorologists are to be believed, be covered in snow this year. And it’s a great spectacle to witness, so for more details head to siberianhuskyclub.org.uk

This year the slopes opened earlier than ever and it looks like snowsports fans should have plenty of opportunities to hone their skills in the months ahead. And if you want to get competitive about it, it’s always worth checking out snowsportscotland.org where you can find details of upcoming events, this month’s highlight being the GORDON SKIERS OPEN at THE LECHT on SAT 18 JAN. There’s even a Bairns Race for the prodigiously talented youngsters. Talking of prodigious talent, DUNDEE UTD’s Ryan Gauld has it in spades and is already being whispered about as the most promising Scottish player of his generation, with scouts not just from the Premiership, but also from Real Madrid and Barcelona checking out his every move. He’s the most notable member of a young team playing with real panache and moving up the SPL table accordingly, so it’ll be interesting to see how they cope when they come to town to face INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE (11 JAN) and ROSS COUNTY (18 JAN). County are having a wretched season so far and ICT are trying to maintain momentum after the departure of Terry Butcher and arrival of Yogi Hughes, so there’s lots at stake when the two meet in Inverness on NEW YEAR’S DAY for the first EL KESSOCKO of 2014. Should be the perfect way to blow away those Hogmanay hangovers, though there might be some sorrows to be drowned afterwards. For County it’s a particularly crucial month, with visits from ST JOHNSTONE and HEARTS, while Caley won’t want to be distracted by the forthcoming League Cup semi final against HEARTS (and its ludicrous, anti-Highlands Edinburgh location/noon kick off) on 02 FEB…

THEATRE
CABARET COMEDY DANCE DRAMA MUSICAL

Going Live.
The festive season draws to a close with the last frenetic shenanigans of the Eden Court panto, SLEEPING BEAUTY, which slaps its last thigh on 05 JAN. It’s perhaps a little too much to hope that a trip to the theatre will induce mass desire to take in live performance on a regular basis, but hopefully at least a few people will have decided to make 2014 the year that they take in the “original 3D” experience a little more often. And this month offers plenty of opportunities to fulfil such resolutions with a wide array of entertainment on offer taking in a diverse mix of genres, the most notable being SCOTTISH BALLET’s production of HANSEL & GRETEL [1] at EDEN COURT from 22–25 JAN. As we’ve come to expect from SB, this is a rather special take on the story, Christopher Hampson’s delightfully inventive production, relocating the Grimm Brother’s famous fairy tale to the 1950s and incorporating the stories and imagination of the people of Scotland. Over the past year participants of all ages, through creative writing and visual art competitions, have helped shape the show and the result already looks like being one of the highlights of the year ahead. More audience input and just as inventive is I AM THE TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS [2] at MAD HATTERS on SAT 01 FEB. Continuing the Rock’n’Wrestle theme that popped its head over the barricades last year, this is a live comedy production by fans, for fans and was a sell out at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe festival. Billing itself as “a show about life, fandom, geekiness and the wild world of the squared circle, with stand up, improv, special guests and more”, it promises to be a lot of fun, with comedians BILLY KIRKWOOD and CHRIS BROOKER marshalling the mayhem. Rather gentler humour as a familiar face from the TV, PHIL HAMMOND brings his GAMES TO PLAY WITH YOUR DOCTOR [3] to EDEN COURT on SUN 26 JAN. As both a practicing doctor and campaigning journalist, he sees things from both sides of the desk, so expect some underlying serious points to be made in a show that also teaches you how to “sing your symptoms, sniff a thermometer, diagnose your doctor, arm wrestle for drugs, get past the bearded receptionist and get out of the NHS alive”. Finally a heads up for THE SUICIDE at EDEN COURT’s ONETOUCH on 05 FEB. Nikolai Erdman’s black comedy was originally banned by Stalin and is widely considered to be one of the finest plays produced in the Soviet Union. Erdman’s controversial piece of theatre still shares some parallels with today’s world as will no doubt be demonstrated when a cast of HND Acting students from Inverness College give their take on this rarely produced farcical tale. DR PHIL HAMMOND : GAMES TO PLAY WITH YOUR DOCTOR @ Eden Court Empire, 7.30pm. Medicine is jolly serious, life and death, pain and suffering, pills and needles. But wouldn’t a trip to the doctor or a rush up to A+E be much more fun if it was a game? In his BRAND NEW show, Dr Phil - a practising doctor, campaigning journalist and the first comedian to appear at a public inquiry - turns the whole of medicine into a succession of games for you to play with your doctor*. What’s the diagnosis? What’s the misdiagnosis? Why are you doing that to me doctor? How long have I got? What are you doing with all our money? And when did you last wash your hands? Learn how to sing your symptoms, sniff a thermometer, diagnose your doctor, arm wrestle for drugs, get past the bearded receptionist and get out of the NHS alive - all through Dr Phil’s highly subversive guerrilla tactics, some of which may be

THE SUICIDE @ Eden Court OneTouch, 1.30pm, 7pm. Semyon Semyonovich, an unemployed young man, comes to the realisation that he’s worth more dead than alive. As news of his misery spreads, a parade of locals emerge from the woodwork hoping to exploit Semyon’s suicide for their own gain. With his doting wife Maria and mother in law Serafima now living on the edge, and an array of eccentric individuals waiting with bated breath for his last one, will Semyon have the nerve to carry out this fatal self-inflicted act? Nikolai Erdman’s black comedy was originally banned by Stalin in Soviet Russia. Widely considered as one of the finest plays produced in the Soviet Union, Erdman’s controversial piece of theatre still shares some parallels with today’s world. Now, a cast of HND Acting students from Inverness College give their take on this rarely produced farcical tale.

Cool (and warm) gadget
The Nest Thermostat
We ll start 2014 by giving you some good news and some bad news. At this time of year it is hard to think of anything more vital to our homes than the heating system. Yet, at a time when we want everything to be sexy or smart it is hard to get excited about the world of the thermostat. That may be all about to change however, because once one of the creators of the original iPod decided to leave Apple in 2008 and focus his considerable talents on the humble home heating thermostat things have been looking decidedly sexier. Tony Fadell was a key player in Steve Jobs Apple reinvention and he is the man behind The Nest Learning Thermostat. His idea was simple. To design a very clever thermostat which learns to automatically adjust the temperature of your home according to your family needs and routine and yet is completely easy to use and self explanatory. This much he has achieved, as well as making a device which looks dang fine too. So what can it do? Programming thermostats is complicated and irritating - but an unprogrammed thermostat can waste a lot of energy. So the Nest Thermostat programs itself. Most people leave the house at one temperature and forget to change it. The Nest Learning Thermostat learns your schedule, programs itself and can be controlled from your smartphone (this lets you change the temperature miles from home, if you are getting home earlier or later than planned). Teach it well and the Nest Thermostat can lower your heating bills up to 20%. If you want your bedroom to be a certain temperature when you wake up at you just tell the nest that and it will turn the heat on at the appropriate time to make sure you get what you want. Following the same principles of Apple products, it is designed to be simple to install and most people manage it in 30 mins or less. First you answer a few basic questions and then the Nest will start building your personalised schedule automatically. The bad news (we did warn you. . .): It is currently only available for the US market, but if you know a tech savvy electrician then it is possible to configure it to the UK power system (you can Google it). However the word on the street is that Mr Fadell is working on a UK version and it may be to market as soon as next year.
RRP (in the US) $249 - which equates to about £152 - but if they were to follow Apple s pattern, it would retail closer to £250. . .

Your mortgage lender is likely to require you to contribute a deposit of around 5% and your mortgage and deposit must cover a combined minimum 80% of the total purchase price. Your mortgage from a qualifying lender must be a repayment mortgage and you are not permitted to buy a Help to Buy (Scotland) scheme property with an interest-only first mortgage. What can we expect from the financial markets in 2014? We all hope that the positivity remains and also the competition between lenders. 5 Tips to keep warm this winter
Christmas may well be over but winter is still very much with us so here are some cost effective tips that you could do to keep you warm throughout the remainder of the winter months without spending a penny. 1 Let the sunlight in and preserve the warm During daylight hours always draw back your curtains. Glass is a natural magnifier of heat. The sun shines on the glass and creates a greenhouse effect and warms the room up. It s natural energy and it s free! Remember to close your curtains (the thicker the better) to preserve that heat once dusk falls. 2 Layer Up A familiar refrain in my house is there s no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate dress usually addressed at children who walk around in a t-shirt and then complain it is cold. You would think jumpers had never been invented! Many people don t realise that the best way to keep warm is by wearing lots of thin layers of clothing, rather than just one bulky item. It is important to keep your feet cosy too, with cold feet you will never feel warm. So double up the socks and wear slippers. 3 Exercise A little bit of exercise does wonders to get the blood flowing and keep you warm. However, you don t have to go mad to have a beneficial effect; doing a little housework, like vacuuming or dusting, will keep you moving and help to keep you warm. Sitting for long periods of time makes you colder so you could try spacing activities out through the day, so that you can alternate between rest and activity. 4 Hot Water Bottle It s and oldie but a goodie. By placing a hot water bottle beneath the covers an hour before you slip into bed means you won t have to brave the chill of the sheets. It s also a great way to ease aches and cold, stiff joints. 5 Warm Bath Whether it is a cold start to the morning or you re wanting to wind down after a long day, then a steamy bath will do you the world of good. It s great way to clear your lymph nodes, stimulate circulation and boost your immune health.

EATING OUT

Jaipur

14‒17 Bridge Street, Inverness
Well, that s a pleasant surprise. Some of us have long held the belief that the prospect of encountering any sort of genuinely different Indian restaurant in Inverness was about as likely as Nessie swimming upstream and hoisting a Union Jack from the castle ramparts. It turns out that we were wrong and, while the monster still sleeps beneath the deep, Jaipur has slipped under the radar to produce the best Indian food you ll get in this city by quite some distance. Considering it s right in the heart of town, next to Gellions and often has a fellow outside in full Indian regalia promoting the good value set meals, it s perhaps surprising that it s never really struck us as a potential gem, although maybe that s exactly why, suggesting a joint

taste sensations to be astounded by. Some of that attitude has filtered through to what Jaipur is doing and, remarkably, the majority of the menu is taken up with dishes you will never have encountered before, traditional options confidently buried in a section called Golden Oldies. We re the only diners in the airy, modern room (a little too simple in décor, but resolutely refusing to subscribe to typical kitschiness), but apparently it s packed in the evening. At least this gives the aforementioned waiter, welcoming and helpful throughout, time to talk. And ensures that our food is freshly cooked and served without having to wait long. My starter is Samooka. Yeah, Samooka. Told you this is a place for new experiences.

aimed primarily at tourists. If we d taken care to actually have a shufty at even the set menu we d have noticed a host of excitingly unfamiliar dishes and our visit would have come much sooner. As curry aficionados know, the majority of cooks at Indian restaurants actually come from Bangladesh, that usually being the main reason for the same old dishes being churned out time and time again. And, indeed the chef here is Bangladeshi too, but, as our friendly waiter (who happens to be his son) tells us, this enterprise started in London, before moving to Aberdeen and thence to our city. In that London they demand far more from their Indian restaurants, recognising that the vast country has a rich variety of cuisines on offer and a whole panoply of
