May 2013

The Festival juggernaut is rolling. . .
RockNess, GoNorth, Northern Roots, Highland Salsa Fest - you name it, there s a festival trucking your way soon. And these ones are just in June and you won t get much let up until the summer has waved bye-bye and isn t sure if it remembers your face fully. The best thing about Highland festivals is the diversity - sure, many are music based, that s a given - but take those first three above, they re very different each with something unique to offer to very different sets of people. Bruce MacGregor s Celtic Connections of the North Northern Roots Festival will be hoping to emulate their recent success of last month s sell-out Brew At The Bog - only this time serving up high quality Celtic and Roots music. New for this year are the city sessions - festival artists performing in the centre of Inverness during the day. More details inside - and of course, online. GoNorth is a creative industries festival - aimed at industry insiders and newcomers who want to share experiences and learn from people who ve been there and done that . But it is also for everyone else - there is a palpable buzz about town as the music programme in particular totally overruns the main city venues for two nights. RockNess offers more of a festival of a national scale - which is a strength as well as a weakness - it usually attracts acts of a scale beyond all our other local festivals, but it suffers somewhat from a lack of local staffing and feel , being a bit like a Glasgow festival set in the Highlands. This year s headliners in truth are a bit disappointing compared to previous years, but there are some acts of real interest to many further down the bill - and the lateish addition of the return of the RockNess Ruler, Fatboy Slim lends some gratefully received weight to proceedings. And then there s the Highland Salsa Fest. Seems like a cracking idea - plainly not for the likes of us with our two left feet tied to the chair leg, but we re sure there s many a golden shimmy out there just waiting for release. . . But all that glisters is not festival - don t miss Scottish Opera s take on Gilbert & Sullivan s awesome Pirates of Penzance or the new Superman movie, or Ruthie Henshall s intimate show, or the Queen-flavoured show Bohemian Rhapsody, or the Mountain Bike World Championships, or the shinty MacTavish Cup Final, or Oasis former guitar son, Bonehead s new band, or the beautiful White Tent with its magical kids shows, or rock chaps Funeral For a Friend, or Zombie Science: Worst Case Scenario . Barely time to go lap dancing! Read on then. . . And don t forget to join us at whatsonhighlands.com

Sound and Vision
Not perhaps quite as much scintillating art for our delectation this month as in the recent past, but still plenty worth checking out. Most notable perhaps is HILLS AND HIGH WATER at INCHMORE GALLERY from 01–29 JUN, a new body of work and the first solo show in the Highlands for three years by JAMES NEWTON ADAMS, which sees the artist deliver more narrative based paintings in his distinctive style. “Using both acrylic and oil on board I explore an idea or a theme through successive layers of underpainting, in order to reveal a story,” he explains. “This process has helped me realise a stronger relationship between expression of feeling and the physical components of the painting itself; the brush and the raw surface.” The potentially oppressive effect of this method is leavened by James’ sense of humour, and the sympathy with which he approaches the struggles and efforts of his subjects. Bottom line - nice pictures. Which is always good. Open Tue to Sat 10am to 5pm, (until 8pm Thu) and by appointment. For more information see inchmoregallery.co.uk Rather more oblique, but certainly intriguing is SOUND MATTERS at THE IONA GALLERY, Kingussie throughout JUN. The exhibition professes to explore “the connections between craft and sound, immersing visitors in environments where these distinct practices, with differing histories and aesthetics, collide”. Quite what that means is beyond our ken, but we’re certainly game for plunging in to find out. Further explanation, of sorts, is provided at theionagallery.co.uk In the past, student shows have often proved to be the most engaging way to catch new talent at an embryonic stage, so the forthcoming demonstration of creativity at IG:LU in CHURCH ST should be well worth checking out. It’s a celebration of a year’s work from those studying VISUAL COMMUNICATION at UHI, showcasing promising designers, illustrators, photographers and image makers. As you might expect, there’s a wide variety of work on show, covering a range of styles and techniques. Participants are HOLLI ROSS, JAMIE HALL, GRAEME MACFARLANE, FAITH LOCKETT, GEOFF MCBRIDE, JAMIE BOWIE, EMIL DATONY, DAZ SMITH and JAMES CASSIE. The exhibition runs from SAT 01–FRI 14 JUN with a special preview on FRI 31 MAY at 8PM. See theIG.LU for more.

BLANDINE ANDERSON, to 1 June Porcelain and Stoneware Ceramics and New Oil Paintings inspired by folklore. SHAZIA MAHMOOD : ON THE EDGE, 8 to 29 June, Shazia Mahomood paints ‘on the edge’ – metaphorically, emotionally and physically. Most of the paintings in this exhibition are coastal scenes from the West coast of Scotland, Cornwall and Northern Ireland, connecting three different Celtic landscapes on the edge of Britain and Europe. The expressive brushstrokes evoke Shazia’s emotional and spiritual reactions to a landscape and changing weather conditions. She enjoys working outdoors, invigorated by the wind, sea spray and the tingle in the air. She will perch on the edge of a cliff or some isolated peak, if needed, in order to gain the best viewpoint. She is a dedicated and passionate painter and it is for this reason that her paintings will stand the test of time. She says “When watching a spectacular storm, no matter how long it lasts, we still remain enthralled and fascinated - I aim to achieve this with my paintings.” castlegallery.co.uk

FILM
COMEDY DOCUMENTARY DRAMA FAMILY ROMANCE

More Than Just Movies
A trip to the cinema these days can mean much more than just going to see a film, as demonstrated by an array of attractions at EDEN COURT this month. On 04 JUN there’s a live performance from the GLYNDEBOURNE opera festival of ARIADNE AUF NAXOS [1], a new production of this compelling and intricately crafted collaboration between composer Richard Strauss and writer Hugo von Hofmannsthal. It’s an interesting way of participating in the festival and there are discounts if you buy tickets for productions throughout the season. See the Eden Court website for more details. On 13 JUN, the latest instalment of NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE finds Helen Mirren’s Olivierwinning performance as the Queen in THE AUDIENCE [2] beamed live from that London. It’ll be interesting to see the dynamic of a play “filtered” by a cinema screen, but it’s a rare chance to see one of our greatest actors. So rare in fact that it’s already sold out, so keep an eye out for returns. And street drummers, plainly… On 18 JUN you can see the world première of POMPEII LIVE [3] – the first live cinema event produced by the British Museum from their major exhibition Life and Death in Pompeii and Herculaneum. It’s introduced live by British Museum Director Neil MacGregor and features Mary Beard, Rachel de Thame, Giorgio Locatelli and Exhibition Curator Paul Roberts, plus you’ll see specially made films of Pompeii and Herculaneum today, and go behind the scenes of the exhibition. If you want something a little more conventional from your cinema, like, well, an actual film, then arriving in cinemas on JUN 14 is MAN OF STEEL [4], the long-awaited reboot of the Superman series. However, those expecting the John Williams theme and speeches on “Truth, justice and the American way” will be disappointed as this offers a deeper, more complex and darker re-imagining, much like Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy (perhaps not coincidentally – Nolan produces this and it also shares the dramatic scoring talents of Hans Zimmer). Helmed by ZACK SNYDER (300, Watchmen, Sucker Punch), the plot sees journalist Clark Kent (HENRY CAVILLE - The Tudors, Immortals) discover his true identity as an alien from the planet Krypton, before using his powers to become Superman and defend people from menace, not least that of fellow Kryptonian General Zod (MICHAEL SHANNON - Boardwalk Empire, Revolutionary Road). As is seemingly customary for modern superhero films, Man of Steel has attracted an all-star cast, including AMY ADAMS as Lois Lane, KEVIN COSTNER and DIANA LANE as the humans who raised Clarke, RUSSELL CROWE as his alien father, and LAURENCE FISHBURNE as the boss of Lois and Clark. After the disappointment of Superman Returns, this looks set to give Superman his cinematic credibility back. You’ll believe a man can fly – without rubbish superimposing! Lastly, look out for NOW YOU SEE ME and THIS IS THE END – both star-studded and with interesting premises (a renegade gang of ultra-magicians-cum-robbers and a clutch of Hollywood’s cool set playing themselves facing, erm, the apocalypse!) and Brad Pitt’s zombie flick, WORLD WAR Z. more at: whatsonhighlands.com

In-tents Storytelling
Of all the venues in town, the one that seems to best understand the excitement to be had from reinterpreting notions of performance space is EDEN COURT. From street dance and graffiti art in the foyer and swings incorporated into an outside performance to NTS’ inventively snaking THE DAY I SWAPPED MY DAD FOR TWO GOLDFISH (which you might be just in time to catch at EC from 29 MAY–01 JUN), it seems like the entire venue is fair game for some sort of show. And this month there’ll be a big white tent outside dominating proceedings. It’s the popup location for NICOLE AND MARTIN who, from 14–20 JUN will, in said WHITE TENT [1], be presenting a mixture of storytelling and physical theatre. The duo’s performance tent was a huge hit at Edinburgh, with the space itself described as “the most beautiful venue on the Fringe”. Inside you’ll find a magical place where the world of theatre and fairy-tale comes to life. Ancient folk tales take on a new guise with Nicole & Martin’s unique story-telling style, children and adults alike are taken on a journey. The stories are played out with a colourful mix of words, music, song, dance, juggling and acrobatics making for a thrillingly unusual experience. Of course, with this being Inverness, there’s always the possibility of it all being played out in the teeth of a hurricane, but fingers crossed for some weather to match the warmth of the performance. Fairytales include The Musicians of Bremen, Hansel & Gretel, The Girl Without Hands and The Fisherman and His Wife with the shows suitable for anyone aged seven and above. Aimed at a younger audience of two to six year olds and, if such a thing is possible, even more exuberant, the STICKY KIDS FUNKY MONKEY SINGALONG (BOAT OF GARTEN COMMUNITY HALL, THU 13 JUN, 10AM and STRATHPEFFER PAVILION, FRI 14 JUN, 10AM) finds Molly and Mac hosting a singalong show featuring loads of favourites from the popular Sticky Kids CDs. Molly Muddle – “the human equivalent of a party popper” apparently - and her friend Mac are having fun dressing up. Don’t forget to look out for the Funky Monkey and the Monster in the Bathroom.

THE DAY I SWAPPED MY DAD FOR TWO GOLDFISH @ Eden Court, 10.30am, 1.30pm. What if you wanted your best friend Nathan’s two goldfish so much, that you would swap anything you had for them? Anything. Absolutely. Anything. Even your Dad... Well that’s just what Tom does and when Mum finds out, she’s not best pleased and Tom and his little sister have to ‘GO GET DAD BACK!’ Unfortunately though, it’s not that simple. Nathan doesn’t have Dad any more. He swapped him for Vashti’s electric guitar. And Vashti swapped Dad with Blinky, for a Gorilla mask. And Blinky swapped Dad with Patti, for Galveston the rabbit. And Patti lives a very, very long way away. Young audiences are invited to take part in an interactive promenade production to help Tom and his sister on their mission to ‘get Dad back!’ A delightful show which is a little bit about being a sibling, and a little bit about being a genius.

MUSIC
CLASSICAL CLUBBING FOLK JAZZ/WORLD ROCK

Tribal Gatherings
Plenty of music this month, with people coming from all over the country to sample a wide selection of exciting bands. And we don’t mean ROCKNESS (though that will obviously be a fine old knees up from 07–09 JUN, with FATBOY SLIM [1], EXAMPLE and several hundred more acts putting in an appearance). No, we’re talking about something a little more intimate, namely the NORTHERN ROOTS FESTIVAL [2] (BOGBAIN FARM, FRI 31 MAY–SUN 02 JUN) and GONORTH [3] (various venues around INVERNESS, 05 & 06 JUN). First up Northern Roots, which we told you a bit about last month, namely that it’s one of the folk highlights of the year and that Irish sibling trio THE HENRY GIRLS are just one of the delights on a strong bill that also includes GROUSEBEATER SOUND SYSTEM, MIKE VASS, NUALA KENNEDY and loads more. But there’s more to the festival than just that. You’ll also be able to experience free affiliated sessions from festival acts in four city centre pubs - Castle Tavern, Market Bar, Gellions and Hootananny - on FRI, SAT and SUN from 2 til 5pm, plus free shuttle buses and a late night Festival Club running till 2am at Bogbain. Craft beer and good grub too, which should make for a top weekend. More details at northernrootsfestival.co.uk GONORTH is an even more established fixture on the musical calendar and, having been based in various Scottish cities in the past, appears to have found its natural home right here. Ostensibly a get together and showcase for the creative industries, it gives the general public a great chance to see some of the best in fashion, film and, most accessibly, new music. There’ll be free gigs in just about every venue in town and you’d be well advised to just wander from one to another as somewhere along the way you’re bound to stumble on an unexpected treasure. If you really need signposts, we’d urge you to check out BE LIKE PABLO, CALL TO MIND, CLEAVERS, COWBOIS RHOS BOTWNNOG, HOMEWORK, LIONEL, MINIATURE DINOSAURS, RED RONSON, THE OXIDES and THREE BLIND WOLVES, but there are heaps more worth checking out. See gonorthfestival.co.uk for more. Also this month, there’s much fun to be had from BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY [4] at EDEN COURT, TUE 18–SAT 22 JUN, in which many startlingly dressed people stomp sexily around stage performing many of Queen’s greatest hits. Is this as Freddie would have wanted? Quite probably! Showing a little less leg but no less fun will be HOOTANNANNY’s 10th BIRTHDAY PARTY (JUN 14–16) with some surprises promised, while BONEHEAD from OASIS brings his new band PARLOUR FLAMES [5] to MAD HATTERS on 02 JUN, Welsh hardcore veterans FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND [6] at IRONWORKS on WED 19 JUN and jazzy soul man CURTIS STIGERS [7] at the same venue on WED 26 JUN. CANDI STATON @ The Ironworks, 7pm. The Soul Queen turned Disco Diva first established herself in the late sixties as one of the true icons of the R’n’B being made in the American South as a response to Detroit’s all-conquering Motown. So she already had a hatful of hits and accolades behind her when she became the Queen Of Disco with songs like “Young Hearts Run Free” and “Nights On Broadway”. In the eighties she experienced another resurgence when “You Got The Love” became a house anthem and, with its 21st century cover by Florence and The Machine, she’s become a touchstone for a whole new generation. If this show is anything like her storming appearance at Belladrum in 2010 we’re in for a treat.

Ex Oasis guitar man, BONEHEAD, brings his new band, PARLOUR FLAMES :
Mad Hatters @ Hootananny, Sun 02 Jun

It’s not exactly Knebworth, but MAD HATTERS on 02 JUN is the location for a gig by a man who spent a significant part of his career gazing from stage at hundreds of thousands of upturned faces. PARLOUR FLAMES is the new combo featuring none other than BONEHEAD from Oasis, who, alongside fellow Manchester troubadour VINNY PECULIAR, is making lyrical, psychedelic art-rock that’s going to confound a whole load of expectations. Their eponymous debut album is out now on Cherry Red along with the new single Pop Music Football

and Girls, which should be one of the highlights of their live show. In the meantime, we asked Bonehead which records he can always trust to make him tingle:
‘Caroline’ by STATUS QUO - has a ferocious energy to it and Vinny and I are proper secret fans of the early stuff. ‘Golden Brown’ by THE STRANGLERS - is as timeless now as it was then. They’re one my all time favourite bands. ‘Venus in Furs’ by THE VELVET UNDERGROUND Lou Reed changed the world and my world too.

‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond’ by PINK FLOYD - Love the way the Floyd structure and build and this is one I often return to. ‘Walk Up to Me’ by TOY - Lovely shoe-gazing psychedelia from a great newish young band. ‘Sweet Thing’ by DAVID BOWIE - from Diamond Dogs. The dramatic vocal kills me; it’s possibly his finest record.

Everybody Salsa
Since the weather has obviously decided to be absolutely no help in the matter, it’s up to us all to create our own summer spirit. And there can’t be many better places to start than at the HIGHLAND SALSA FEST which runs at various venues around Inverness from FRI 21–SUN 23 JUN. Now in its fifth year, it’s proud of being bigger and better than ever, with a whole weekend devoted to the music of Cuba and the Caribbean, including not just familiar styles like samba, rumba and meringue, but also intoxicatingly unusual dances such as bachatango, kizomba, rueda and son. Some of these will be familiar to devotees of the outer reaches of Strictly…, but they’ll be new to most, so it’s just as well that there’ll be some of the finest exponents around to show you the moves. Things kick off on FRI 21 with a boat trip on the JACOBITE QUEEN incorporating a Midsummer Solstice Salsa followed by a Welcome Party at the MAPLE COURT HOTEL. Then on SAT 22 it’s down to business with registration at EDEN COURT from 8.45am then a full programme of dance workshops kicking off with a Zumba warm up followed by a selection of classes hosted by professional dance teachers and performers from throughout the UK. On top of all that there’s a full evening programme at Eden Court where you’ll be able to see how the very best dancers from across the globe use salsa as a starting point for so much more. For full details of the festival contact Alma Cubana Dance on 07795 166433 or email [email protected] If all that seems a bit too continental to you, then there’s a bit of traditional homegrown choreography on offer in the form of THE EUROPEAN PIPE BAND CHAMPIONSHIPS taking place in GRANT PARK, FORRES on SAT 29 JUN and featuring over 100 Pipe Bands from all over Scotland as well as the UK and Europe. As well as the skirl of the pipes, and the beat of the drums there will be highland dancers, a craft fair, children’s’ entertainment and many other stalls and attractions, including a food and drink marquee, to make this a fun, family day out. Cheer on your local Pipe Band or just enjoy the, ahem, “traditional sights and sounds of Scotland” with around 4000 of the country’s best pipers and drummers, all dressed in their colourful tartans. More at rspba.org Or, hey, who knows, maybe the sun will come out after all and you can take in some of the plethora of walks on offer. Be Like Wiggo
These are heady days for cycling, fuelled by all-conquering British success on track and road. There are plenty of opportunities to participate in the latter this month so that when the Tour starts in July you’ll be able to turn to your nearest and dearest and nod knowingly while saying, “yeah, I know EXACTLY how they feel”. And you might be able to say that with some justification after THE CAIRNGORM 100/50 CYCLE SPORTIVE [1] taking place on CAIRNGORM MOUNTAIN on SAT 08 JUN. The UK’s highest event on a public road (632m) - with a finish on Scotland’s version of Alpe D’huez! - the route take you from the heights of Cairngorm through the north of the Spey Valley. It’s a classic in the making. See handsonevents.co.uk for more. That’s not the only cycling fun to be had with another couple of events doing their best to promote and encourage the activity. The SCOTTISH BIKEATHON on SUN 16 JUN starts in KINGUSSIE with a similar route to the above, the riders pedalling through Cairngorms National Park to Aviemore and return on a circular route along the Spey Valley - passing through historic Ruthven Barracks and back to a hero’s welcome at Kingussie. The Bikeathon, which is held in aid of Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research provides the conclusion to a whole weekend of activities under the banner BIKEFEST SCOTLAND, with stalls, displays and more at Ardvonie Park, Kingussie. For details of the whole event see bikefestscotland.co.uk A rather more rigorously competitive form of cycling comes with the MOUNTAIN BIKE WORLD CUP [2] at FORT WILLIAM on SAT 08 & SUN 09 JUN. As the name suggests, it’s the most prestigious event in the calendar in a glorious setting and attracting the best competitors from around the world. For details of where to stay and how to make the most of an unrivalled event see fortwilliamworldcup.co.uk

It’s not all cycling in Cairngorm though, with the CBNS ROLLER-SKI UPHILL RACE [3] on SUN 09 JUN sounding particularly intriguing. Also recommended this month: MACTAVISH CUP FINAL (15 JUN), MORAY WALKING FESTIVAL (20–24 JUN), CALEDONIAN CHALLENGE (15/16 JUN). THEATRE
CABARET COMEDY DANCE DRAMA MUSICAL

The Very Model of a Modern Major Musical
Last month there were pirates at EDEN COURT in the form of the acrobatic cast of FLOWN, now they’re back with feet a little more firmly planted on the ground for PIRATES OF PENZANCE [1] (EC, 05–08 JUN). Credentials don’t come much finer than a collaboration between Scottish Opera and the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company (returning to the stage for the first time in a decade) means we’re in for a treat, especially since there’s apparently more than a little of the spirit of Monty Python to this interpretation of the Gilbert and Sullivan classic. Conducted by G&S expert John Owen Edwards and directed by Martin Lloyd-Evans, the fantastic ensemble cast includes a horde of young, fresh talent as well as G&S stars Steven Page as The Pirate King and Richard Suart as the MajorGeneral. If you want to learn more about the production it’s also worth booking a place on one of the special Unwrapped sessions. More details at www.eden-court.co.uk Another person guaranteed to pretty much own the stage is RUTHIE HENSHALL [2], who though still young is something of a seasoned musical veteran with notable appearances in Chicago (on Broadway), Les Mis and more as well as a host of awards. She’s at EDEN COURT EMPIRE on SUN 09 JUN for what’s billed as an INTIMATE EVENING. She and her band will take you on a musical journey through her extraordinary career drawing from a broad range of genres, right through from the great American songbook to contemporary tunes. More memorable tunes in WHY DO YOU STAND THERE IN THE RAIN? [3] at EDEN COURT on TUE 11 JUN. Featuring the music of Woody Guthrie and his contemporaries, the students of Pepperdine University tell the story of the march of the Bonus Army, a national campaign for food, work and justice in 1932. It resulted in brutal reprisal and parallels with protest of today are easy to see. The excellent PLAY PIECES season continues at SPECTRUM CENTRE, with the latest offering on SAT 01 JUN at 1pm drawing on the current popularity of all things Nordic. THE SEA BETWEEN US finds the Caithness Skraelings Theatre Company telling a tale created by Icelandic writer Sólveig Jónsdóttir about “life, death and nature - both elemental and human. It highlights the fact that on this planet, nature doesn’t live alongside us, we live alongside it”. More about the whole season at www.playpieces.co.uk Also recommended this month: THE 39 STEPS [4] (EDEN COURT, 28 MAY–01 JUN), Alan Bennett’s HABEUS CORPUS (FLORIANS THEATRE, WED 26–SAT 29 JUN), SOME OTHER MOTHER [5] (EDEN COURT, TUE 25 JUN) and ZOMBIE SCIENCE: WORST CASE SCENARIO [6] (ARDROSS COMMUNITY HALL, THU 27 JUN). More details in the listings and on our website at www.whatsonhighlands.com

the march of the Bonus Army: a national campaign for food, work and justice. A stylistic tribute to the Scottish Political Theatre tradition, this true story for here and now is told in the words and songs of those who were there. Production Premiere: Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2012

CALUM’S ROAD @ Eden Court OneTouch, 7.30pm, Calum’s Road has become the stuff of modern folklore. It is the remarkable true story of one man’s single-minded determination to challenge the powers-that-be and is brought to stages across Scotland for the first time. Based on Roger Hutchison’s elegiac novel of the same name, Scots playwright David Harrower offers audiences the richly detailed and unhurried description of a dying way of life in Northern Raasay.

A Conversation with Carmel fuses the talents of some of the UK’s most exciting artists; choreographer Natasha Gilmore; performers Diana Payne-Myers; Matthew Hawkins; Jade Adamson and Vince Virr; Candice Edmunds and Jamie Harrison from Fringe First winner Vox Motus; composer Quee MacArthur (Shooglenifty) and filmmaker Rachel Davies plus an ensemble cast drawn from across the local community.

All Good In The Hood. . .
Check out the Moodlight Aura from Whirlpool
When thinking of a kitchen redesign you would imagine that most people would start with something fundamental, like the layout or the materials used, but actually the design element that more people base their whole kitchen look on is the humble cooker hood. And when I look at the beautiful Moodlight Aura Cooker Hood from Whirpool, I can see why. This elegant piece of design adds real atmosphere to any kitchen. You can change the mood and look of your kitchen by selecting a colour from a palette of 8 bright predefined colours or scroll through the 256 shades on offer. Giving your kitchen a warm, relaxing, cosy or vibrant feel at the touch of a button and a distinctive artistic look. Designed for kitchen islands, though there is a wall mounted alternative called Graceful, the Moodlight Aura doesn t only look good either, it offers great functionality with a beautifully quiet but powerful 3 speed blower. This product is relatively new to market and currently only available through the French Whirlpool website with a retail price of around £1500. As they say in France: Feront régner modernité et harmonie dans votre cuisine , which - according to my translate app - means that modernity and harmony will reign in your kitchen. You can t argue with the French. (Erm. . . - Ed) HSPC ¦ 30 Queensgate Inverness ¦ www.hspc.co.uk ¦ 01463 231173

The tea dress started life as a more informal dress for ladies to be able to wear at home. Mostly importantly they were to worn without a corset and not everyone was happy about this decline in morals. As one writer in 1879 wrote, Ladies who a few years ago would have considered the idea appalling, calmly array themselves in the glorified dressing-robe known as the tea gown and proceed to display themselves to the eyes of their admirers. Well, times have changed, thank goodness, but the tea dress - albeit in many different guises - remains. These days many different styles can be called a tea dress as long as it it falls between the knee and the bottom of the calf. Usually made from lighter fabrics and often with a floral print, making them so suitable to the summer months. (Erm. . . - Ed)

Many of the high street shops have some super sweet tea dresses this season but if you want to get really authentic the you have to hit the second hand shops and hunt for some originals.

EATING OUT

Maple Court

12 Ness Walk, Inverness, 01463 230330
With fewer establishments in the city centre offering cracking value lunch time deals these days, the 2 courses for £7.50 being offered recently by Maple Court jumped out as a really good deal. So, dodging the showers, on this fine / freezing / sunny / rainy / hail-stoning day - you name it I saw it - I had a very pleasant / wet / painful stroll along the river bank to The Maple Court Hotel. I ve learnt my lesson and will drive next time, because they do in fact have ample parking spaces in the hotel grounds. I realise I was pushing the boundaries of what is properly considered lunchtime by turning up close to 2pm but still our welcome couldn t have been warmer and we were shown to a table with a window view which would be honestly hard to beat. In view of the castle, watching the river run by just beyond the beautiful grounds is as perfect a way to eat as I can think of. There are 2 dining rooms and we were in the slightly more informal room off the bar - which is fair enough at lunchtime I think. The whole feel of the place is old fashioned and I don t mean that in a detrimental way at all, I literally mean the building is old, the furniture is that old solid kind - armchairs that say I m here and here I ll stay , paintings from days of yore. The interior is not funky but it seems quite comfortable with what it is. The lunchtime menu is pretty extensive, offering a choice of 6 starters, 5 mains and 3 light bite dishes. I chose the Deep Fried Brie served with Salad Leaves and Mango Couli, which was a pleasant dish. The batter on the Brie was very light and crisp no stodge here. A pleasing array of neat salad and the cheeky perkiness of the mango set this dish off nicely. My dining companion chose the Grilled Goats Cheese with Seasonal Leaves, Tomato Salsa and Toasted Bruschetta. Very happy with this dish also, with it s generous slice of Goats Cheese fused onto a slice of very crisp bruschetta. It presented a satisfying combination, the creaminess of the cheese with the crunch of the bruschetta and an especially successful pert little salsa - which was very finely prepared and added the top notes to the dish well. In double quick time our main meals arrived - I didn t mind rushing through the courses as we had arrived late and lunch would have

been pushing into dinner if we weren t careful. Mine was Roast Vegetable and Goat s Cheese Tartlet with Roast Vine Tomatoes served with boiled potatoes. I was feeling a little jealous of the ladies on the table next to me who had ordered the Haddock and Chips (which incidentally on the regular menu is £10.50, so that makes the lunchtime deal even better value). Anyway, that looked amazing but all jealousy was forgotten when I tasted my own dish. The Goats Cheese was prepared in much the same way as my partner s starter but in this case it was used as the topping to the tartlet. The roast vegetable filling was sweet and super tasty and the pastry still had an amazing crunchy texture. The roasted vine tomatoes were a lovely and unusual addition, though I found the bare potatoes a bit plain that s the Irish in me, we don t believe in having naked potatoes while there is butter in the world. My partner had Mushroom Stroganoff with Rice Pilaf. This was a simple dish, served in an unpretentious manner but was quite the little stunner. The sauce was a tangy, creamy sensation, the mushrooms of excellent bite and quality and the pilaf rice was subtly fragrant and non cloggy what more could you want? The dessert menu was maybe a little uninspired, featuring all the usual suspects; Sticky Toffee Pudding, Chocolate Fudge Cake etc... Though it was a relief not to have a Creme Brûlée in sight. We went for the 2 very slightly more unusual choices - Tarte Au Citron with Chantilly Cream and Baked Vanilla Cheesecake with a Duo of Fruit Coulis. The lemon tart was nice enough - a

bought-in affair that neither excites nor offends. My one quibble was that the cream was not a Chantilly cream, though it was a perfectly decent heavy cream. I feel that a light, flavoured Chantilly would have added something to the dish. The Baked Cheesecake (also generic) was a tad more interesting with some texture and flavour. The 2 coulis it came with were the stand out - especially the raspberry one which had an intriguing sherbet sensation about it. I should mention as well that the waitress who served us was very good - she was friendly, professional and attentive. So, over all, we enjoyed our great value lunch. This type of modern Scottish food with a bit of European flair can be a touch safe and unimaginative but the chef here at the Maple Court seems to throw in the occasional curveball just to keep it interesting - keep em coming. I was a happy camper as I stepped out into the May hailstones again - very glad that the Maple Court is just a hop skip and a jump away from centre of town. Price for 2: £24.50 (exc. drinks)
