Art with a smile...
What with the HAPPYNESS COMEDY FESTIVAL taking place this month, which you can read about throughout this issue, it’s apt that you can also take in THE ART OF HUMOUR at KILMORACK GALLERY until 01 JUN. Bringing together work from a wide range of artists, it also displays a whole range of definitions as to what makes us smile. So, you get everything from EDUARD BERSUDSKY, creator of the kinemats (mechanical sculpture) for the astounding Sharmanka Theatre to the brightly surreal pop art of MICHAEL FORBES [pic] and PAUL BARNES who have both produced special work for this show. There’s also ALAN MACDONALD from Carnoustie who grabs with the strange juxtaposition of the modern with the ancient. There might be a Coca Cola can in the hands of a Cardinal in full red garb; even the faces appear recognisably contemporary, but they exist in an historical and surreal landscape. With humour, Macdonald makes you look deeper at the painting and because of this at ourselves. Other painters, printmakers and sculptors at this marvellous exhibition are; COLIN BROWN, HELEN DENERLEY, STEVE DILWORTH, HENRY FRASER, DAVID KEMP, ROBERT POWELL, INGEBJORG SMITH, DAVID KEMP, RONALD RAE, GEORGE WYLLIE and ILLONA MORRICE. You can read more about the exhibition and see some of the work on show at kilmorackgallery.co.uk IG:LU in CHURCH STREET continues to demonstrate that there’s a space for all kinds of artistic expression. Hot on the hells of the unsettling Harry Potter fanfic show, the gallery is given over this month to the intriguing LIVING IN CLIPS: LIVING IN RETROGRADE by fashion blogger and designer NATALIE RIACHI. Having graduated from her degree in Fashion Design at Heriot Watt University in 2009, she moved to Paris and it’s there that she started her Living In Clips blog, primarily following daily personal style moments from home and away, new up and coming British designer must-haves, a range of her own designs and creations and most recently, street style photography features from Paris Fashion Week 2013. The exhibition of images follows Natalie’s footsteps and vision of beauty through the streets of Paris - her home away from home - as she captures moments in Fashion’s saturated Social Media history. Extending an invitation to all to join her on this journey to view it with your own eyes and join her in her future social media exploits. The show runs from FRI 10 to WED 22 APR. Visitors to IG:LU will be familiar with the work of ROBBIE MACKINTOSH who has exhibited there regularly since it opened. If you’re a fan you’ll be interested in his show with friends called BREACH OF THE PEACE / IN THE FACE OF IT at the newly opened ART BANK gallery under THE VILLAGE on Union St. Ask in the shop to be taken down to the gallery for the show which runs from 01–31 MAY…

FILM
COMEDY DOCUMENTARY DRAMA FAMILY ROMANCE

Cinema Rules OK
We can’t remember a month when there’s been quite so many eagerly awaited films on show, so without further ado let us tell you exactly why you’d be well advised to spend just about the entire month deciding that cinema might not be dead after all. GOOD VIBRATIONS [2] (EDEN COURT, 03–06 MAY) tells the story of 1970s Belfast music fan Terri Hooley, a vital force in that city’s emerging music scene thanks to his record shop and label from which the film gets its name. His biggest discoveries were The Undertones and when they first get played on the John Peel show it’s a joyous moment around which the rest of the impressive drama whirls. There are bound to be fictional liberties taken, but it’s still both a fascinating insight into the Belfast punk scene and a reminder of how pure passion can change the world just a little bit. I’M SO EXCITED [1] (EDEN COURT, 03–16 MAY) looks gloriously odd, as you’d expect considering that it comes from Spain’s PEDRO ALMADOVAR. His compatriot and similar visionary Bigas Luna died last month leaving Pedro alone to carry the flame for wildly inventive drama, laced with unhinged comedy. This one’s set entirely in a plane on a flight to Mexico and appears to be a Latin reinvention of the Alan Cumming sitcom The High Life. Which has to be a good thing. We’d quite like to have seen Almadovar take on THE GREAT GATSBY [3] (EDEN COURT, 16–30 MAY), but this is helmed by BAZ LUHRMANN. While the previous film version with Robert Redford, Mia Farrow and a very young Patsy Kensit looked great, it never captured the mixture of elegant melancholy and vicious abandon found in Fitzgerald’s magnificent novel and you sense this might again be a triumph of sheen over content, but stars LEONARDO DI CAPRIO and CAREY MULLIGAN will be eyeing Oscar nominations. There’s more doomed hedonism in THE LOOK OF LOVE (EDEN COURT, 17–23 MAY) which reunites director MICHAEL WINTERBOTTOM and actor STEVE COOGAN in an account of the life of British porn king Paul Raymond. It’s a fascinating tale and Coogan was born to play the lead role, while it’s good to see ANNA FRIEL back on the big screen as his long suffering wife. And watch out for rising star IMOGEN POOTS as his daughter. She’s on the verge of becoming one of the most in-demand actresses around as you’ll realise by the end of the year. We guarantee it. Finally, a few big box office releases: STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS [4] (VUE from 09 MAY) is the latest instalment in JJ ABRAMS’ telling of the life of the young Captain Kirk, with BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH scene stealing in action packed yarn about a quest for WOMD. THE BIG WEDDING [5] (VUE from 29 MAY) is a U.S. remake of a French film starring ROBERT DE NIRO, KATHERINE HEIGL, DIANE KEATON, AMANDA SEYFRIED, TOPHER GRACE, BEN BARNES, SUSAN SARANDON, and ROBIN WILLIAMS. Almost enough reason to go see it right there. No wedding for once, this time for THE HANGOVER PART III [6] (VUE from 24 MAY) the Wolfpack return for a ‘final’ outing. The traditional stars are rejoined by MIKE TYSON and HEATHER GRAHAM and introduced to JOHN GOODMAN. Japes? Yes, japes.

Keeping the Kids Happy
Typically now that the school hols are over and everyone should be back revising for exams by boning up on oxbow lakes, coracles and the like, along comes a host of rather marvellous distractions for kids. Many of them are centred around the HAPPYNESS COMEDY FESTIVAL which is back for a second year and runs from 23–26 MAY, providing entertainment not just for the grownups but also youngsters who like a chuckle. JAMES CAMPBELL [1] presents Comedy For Kids in EDEN COURT GARDENS at noon on SAT 25 and SUN 26 MAY, and at 2pm each afternoon in FALCON SQUARE, aimed at children over six and their families. Talking about “funny things in a funny way that children seem to like”, it’s born out of his weekly travels around primary schools, telling stories and encouraging children to write their own stuff. And those of them with a knack for it, might just find themselves in the final of CLASS CLOWNS [2] at 5pm on SUN 26 in EDEN COURT ONETOUCH, the conclusion of a competition to find the funniest youngster in the Highlands with the prize of a VIP trip to the Edinburgh Fringe up for grabs. You might just get to see a star of the future take their first steps into comedy. Hosted by the excellent PATRICK MONAHAN Also worth seeing are the SCOTTISH FALSETTO SOCK PUPPETS [3] who’ll be presenting a couple of kids shows in EDEN COURT GARDENS on SAT 25 and SUN 26 at 3pm, full of their usual mayhem, silliness and loopy creativity. There’ll be hyperactivity from both crowds and performers we’ll warrant.

Check whatsonhighlands.com for more info, features & interviews. Launches 31-3-13

Away from the festival there are another couple of shows worth mentioning. SPOT’S BIRTHDAY PARTY at EDEN COURT EMPIRE on 14 & 15 MAY. Adapted and directed by the UK’s premiere children’s playwright David Wood (The Gingerbread Man, The BFG, Meg and Mog Show), this finds, as the title suggests, everyone’s favourite puppy celebrating his birthday, accompanied by Steve the Monkey, Helen the Hippo and Tom the Crocodile plus Spot’s mum and dad, Sally and Sam. Special guest Marco the Rabbit Magician is on hand too and the fun includes music, songs, games, stories and theatrical magic to capture your little one’s imagination. The reliably ace NATIONAL THEATRE OF SCOTLAND are bringing THE DAY I SWAPPED MY DAD FOR TWO GOLDFISH to EDEN COURT from 29 MAY–01 JUN. As you’d expect from NTS, it isn’t your average show, but an interactive promenade production taking in the stalls foyer as our hero Tom, having swapped his dad for his best mate’s goldfish, negotiates a whole series of secondary exchanges to get his father back. Best of all, with a nod to Noel Edmonds’ much missed Swap Shop, there’s a chance on SAT 01 JUN from noon to 1.45pm to get along and swap “a toy, a book or even a Dad” at a special swap table. Free, creative and fun family activities will be taking place between shows in the foyer, all welcome.

MUSIC
CLASSICAL CLUBBING FOLK JAZZ/WORLD ROCK

Big Daddy
As father to Rufus and Martha and once married to the late, great Kate McGarrigle, LOUDON WAINWRIGHT III’s [2] own excellence has perhaps been overshadowed by that of the rest of his family. If, however, you want to see just why he has strong claims to being one of the greatest singer-songwriters America has produced, you’ll get proof at his EDEN COURT EMPIRE show on SUN 12 MAY. Originally inspired by seeing Bob Dylan at the Newport festival in 1963, he’s been making music for the best part of 35 years, honing an individual self-mocking style that’s maybe had people underestimating the quality of his work. And he’s not finished yet, though his new album does contain intimations of mortality with its title, Older Than My Old Man Now. The record itself is as good a chunk of autobiography as you’ll hear all year, but hopefully the rest of his set will include some more of his delightful humour, a characteristic that’s been tapped most recently by his cameo role in the excellent Parks and Recreation sitcom. It’s rather too much to expect that any other members of the Wainwright clan will put in an appearance at the show, but they’re no strangers to the area with Martha having delivered a memorable performance at Belladrum a couple of years back. This year’s BELLADRUM TARTAN HEART FESTIVAL has just announced its line-up for its tenth anniversary on FRI 02 and SAT 03 AUG and there’s the head of another musical dynasty putting in an appearance in the shape of folk legend MARTIN CARTHY. He’s part of a diverse and intriguing line-up that also includes JAMES, TWIN ATLANTIC, THE HORRORS, DOUGIE MACLEAN, THE NOISETTES, FATHERSON, KING CHARLES and RICK REDBEARD. You’ll be reading plenty more about the festival on these pages in the months ahead, but you’d best buy your tickets now as they sell out fast. For more details see tartanheartfestival.co.uk Elsewhere this month there are plenty more opportunities to take in a whole range of musical treats including Carrbridge’s most famous daughter RACHEL SERMANNI [1] at IRONWORKS on WED 22 MAY, Lewis’ THE BOY WHO TRAPPED THE SUN at the same venue on FRI 10 MAY (supported by SCOTT RINNING from CINEMATICS), bluesy rock veterans NINE BELOW ZERO at MAD HATTERS on WED 22 MAY, plus a rake of big name DJs - DAVE CLARKE [3] (IRONWORKS, SAT 04 MAY), LISA LASHES (UV, SAT 11 MAY), a DJ set from pop chaps JLS [4] (SAT 18 MAY) for MIAMI’s 2nd birthday – and JON PLEASED WIMMIN [5] (KARMA LOUNGE, SAT 25 MAY) who you can read about in ‘Spill’, p20. Finally a shout out for something a bit different at EDEN COURT ONETOUCH on 31 MAY in the form of the HIGHLAND SOUL CLUB. That’ll certainly be the case if past performances everywhere from Belladrum to your local Tesco are anything to go by, each one treated as if they’re headlining a stadium or something. Though only together since April 2012, they’ve already done much in the Wake Up Inverness stakes, bringing a bit of good-old fashioned rock’n’roll flamboyance and some surprisingly well crafted songs to proceedings. All too often when we hear local bands, it’s a tad dispiriting to sense their sound is drawn from a tiny pool of influences, making for music that’s all too often homogeneously underachieving. It’s refreshing then to find KOBI unashamedly celebrating the lush pop of the likes of The Blue Nile, Aztec Camera and even The Cars. It’s a brave admission, but one that pays off with their debut single “All The Way” being something that demands heavy rotation radio play or soundtracking an American TV show thanks to hooks aplenty and great big chiming chords almost as massive as the handsome picture of the Matterhorn on the front cover. The trio of GARY THAIN, STEVE ROBERTSON and DAVE SMITH are steadily picking up support having played King Tuts and The Lemon Tree as well as gigs closer to home at Rockness, Belladrum and Brew At The Bog. And with the single produced by Grammy Award winner STEVE ORCHARD (Noel Gallagher, Travis, Paul McCartney) it’s obvious that, unlike many, they’re not ashamed to think big. A very, very promising start. For more details see www.kobimusic.co.uk

Arthur Smith, Patrick Monahan, Bec Hill, Janey Godley, Ben Norris, Hedluv & Passman, and the Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre:
Happyness Inverness Comedy Festival, various venues, Thu 23–Sun 26 May
Okay, so hopefully by now you’ll have noticed this issue is choc full of news about the Happyness Comedy Festival – well, we spoke to several of the stars ahead of their visit - here’s some excerpts, for the full interviews & more, visit: T Is comedy losing something in the relentless surge to sell more DVDs than anyone else? HEDLUV + PASSMAN - H: no idea. It’s one of the only ways to get comedy down in Cornwall though so I don’t mind. P: they’re pretty expensive though... T What would you be doing for a living if you weren’t a stand-up? ARTHUR SMITH: Male escort BEC HILL: I’d probably end up being one of those people who stops you on the street and asks if you want to sponsor a tiger. T What’s the secret of your success? SCOTTISH FALSETTO SOCK PUPPET THEATRE: We have cornered the live comedy socks market in this country. Also toilet gags, they’re popular. PATRICK MONAHAN: Eating lots of cake and giving out lots of hugs - and never swearing or panicking when it’s going wrong, remember to always smile and make sure you brush your teeth twice a day! T What do you do to relax? JANEY GODLEY: I like to go long walks in the hopes of meeting people with dogs I can clap, I watch customs based reality shows like “Nothing To Declare”, I goad rappers into fighting with me on Twitter and in general irritate my family. Just the usual stuff. SCOTTISH FALSETTO SOCK PUPPET THEATRE: Sit in a laundry basket and ming. And what other act can make that claim? T Any up and coming talents we should be keeping an eye on? ARTHUR SMITH: Yes – newsreader Huw Edwards. T Got anything to sell us? BEN NORRIS: I have a Korean Rickenbacker copy guitar for sale if anyone’s interested…

JON PLEASED WIMMIN:
Karma Lounge, Sat 25 May
Whisper it, but DJs are a bit boring these days. Heads down nerdiness and a general lack of creativity tending to rule the roost. Thankfully there are still a few of the old-school gang around to show just how it should be done and one of the best remains JON PLEASED WIMMIN. A product of London’s wild Acid House club scene, he’s played all over the world and is coming to Inverness in May. We tracked him down for some words of wisdom: T If a nuclear missile was heading our way and there was just time for you to drop one more tune to soundtrack the end of the world, what would it be? Ooh.....it would either be the Lionrock Wigout mix of Bjork’s Big Time Sensuality or Say Hello, Wave Goodbye by Soft Cell (Extended Version with the sumptuous clarinet solo). T Back then, clubbing seemed to be a far more celebratory and welcoming experience whereas nowadays it’s largely geared to catering for fans of very narrow genres. Do you still have the Balearic spirit? Oh god totally, it’s that element to what I do that made my name. I remember playing at Slam at The Arches and mixing from a Jeff Mills track into A-Ha and the place went wild. What people remember the most are surprises. There’s nothing more boring than a DJ set that doesn’t fluctuate or change direction a few times. You may as well just play the same track on a loop for 2 hours. T What were the records that you first fell in love with? My parents are in The Salvation Army and I grew up singing in the choir and playing cornet in the band so it was a very musical household. Abba were big in our house (and still are) followed by Bowie, T-Rex, Kate Bush, Blondie, Siouxsie & The Banshees and Adam and The Ants (Adam was my first crush). I’m a massive pop fan and always sneak some elements of it into my sets. WANT MORE? READ FULL INTERVIEW AT:

T Who were your first comedy heroes? BEN NORRIS: Tony Hancock, Peter Cook & Dudley Moore, Sgt Bilko & Python. JANEY GODLEY: From a very young age Billy Connolly was my comedy hero, it was amazing to see someone from the same kind of upbringing as me on the telly singing songs and telling funny jokes. When I was in New Zealand doing the comedy festival he came to see my show - it was the best feeling ever! T Tell us about the very first time you stood on a stage and told a joke. BEC HILL: I ad-libbed a line in a school production of Snow White when I was 6. I was playing the Evil Witch and I had to act angry because I had just found out Snow White wasn’t dead. I yelled out, “THIS IS WORSE THAN A MEASLES INJECTION!” (We had just had school vaccinations, so it was topical.) I’m not sure if I’ve ever topped that in terms of confidence or timing. T How long did it take to realise you wanted to do stand-up for a living? PATRICK MONAHAN: When I realised that I didn’t like getting up early in the morning and enjoyed the company of drunk strangers on a night out. HEDLUV + PASSMAN - H: I think what’s happened here is what’s being mistaken for stand-up is simply me and Passman standing up on stage… P: probably during the bits between the songs... We’re primarily a music act. H: we’re trying to be proper rappers P: it’s kind of awkward…

In 2012 a resurrection no one thought possible took place when legendary band The Stone Roses reformed after 16 years. With unprecedented access to previously unseen archive footage, The Stone Roses: Made of Stone is a revealing journey through the life of one of the most revered and influential bands in British music history.

After breaking up with his girlfriend, American graduate Simon goes on a soul-searching trip to Paris. There, he falls in love with sweet-natured prostitute Victoria. The chemistry builds between the pair until they find themselves in a serious relationship, one that leads to blackmail, betrayal and the ultimate revelation of Simon's true nature.

Pablo Trapero, director of Carancho and Lion’s Den, returns with this story of two deeply respected Argentinian Catholic priests who take very different paths in their struggle against violence, corruption and injustice.

Plus satellite Q&A with Shane Meadows and, possibly, The Stone Roses.

Words & Deeds
You can moan all you like about the general dumbing down of culture, but we do our bit up here to allay such fears with a host of literary celebrations, the first of the year coming in the form of the ULLAPOOL BOOK FESTIVAL which runs from 10–12 MAY. Now entering its ninth year, it’s not only based in the most beautiful of locations, on the shore of Loch Broom, but also offers some interesting guests. One of the most popular this year is sure to be IAN RANKIN [1] on FRI 10 MAY, who used a recent appearance in Inverness to exclusively reveal to the world the title of his new Rebus novel, Saints Of The Shadow Bible. Hopefully he’ll be revealing more about what to expect from it. We’re also looking forward to: PAULA WILLIAMS giving a talk on the history of female climbing called Pinnacles and Petticoats; RAJA SHEHADEH [2], a lawyer and writer living in Ramallah, who is the author of Occupation Diaries, A Rift in Time - Travels with my Ottoman Uncle and Palestinian Walks - Notes on a Vanishing Landscape, which won the Orwell Prize in 2008; and ANTHONY BAXTER [3] who made the magnificent You’ve Been Trumped film. There are plenty more impressive looking guests so for full details see ullapoolbookfestival.co.uk

For an account of something just that little bit more physically demanding, we’re looking forward to the talk by RODDY RIDDLE at EDEN COURT on THU 16 MAY. Inverness man Riddle is a former international cyclist who competed in the 1994 Commonwealth Games, but in 2008 he was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Insulin dependent, he decided to challenge the perceived limitations of living with the condition and, as you do, signed up for the toughest foot race in the world, the 250km Marathon des Sables across the Sahara Desert. The race is being run as we go to press, but assuming he makes it back on one piece, Roddy will be in conversation with MFR presenter and newspaper columnist Nicky Marr so expect tales of scorpions and bivouacs, sand storms and insulin pumps. Proceeds from the evening will be donated to Diabetes UK and JDRF UK. From the barren desert to our local waters, the REALLY WILD FESTIVAL on the MON 06 MAY Bank Holiday at WDCS SCOTTISH DOLPHIN CENTRE, FOCHABERS has fun activities for the whole family, including dolphin watching (from the shore), guided walks, competitions, music and food. There’s even talk of an inflatable whale. Children must be accompanied. See wdcs.org for more.

SPORT
ATHLETIC BALL COMBAT EXTREME RACING

Highland Sport’s Golden Days
When the SPL season started last summer, there was much rash talk of Rangers’ absence tolling a death knell for the league. In fact it’s been just the opposite, making for the most exciting competition in years. Sure, Celtic have, as expected, dominated, but the real story of the season has been the glorious achievements of our Highland sides. It’s fitting then (as well as sign of the bankability to TV audiences) that the season concludes on SUN 19 MAY with a televised clash from VICTORIA PARK - ROSS COUNTY V INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE at 12.45pm. County have settled into life in the SPL with some aplomb and but for a few mid-season wobbles might not just have clambered into the top half before the split but be as close to a European place as rivals Caley Thistle. ICT in turn had a curious start to the season (at one point having scored more than Celtic and conceded more than bottom club Dundee), but have soared in the second half of the campaign and, at the time of writing, are only three points off the runners up spot. If Terry Butcher doesn’t get Manager Of The Year we’ll know all those anti-Highland conspiracy theories are true. Ross County might not be in everyone’s good books after their decision not to ratify the prospective new league structure, but on the field they’ve been a breath of fresh air. And whatever the result of the final El Kessocko before the summer, it serves as a glowing tribute to two teams that have firmly established Highland football as a force to be reckoned with. SPORT Once the final whistle blows it’s time to turn our attention to summer sport. Cricket is one such activity that’s finally establishing itself in Scotland and if you fancy being part of that resurgence, why not sign up for the INVERNESS WELFARE CRICKET LEAGUE which starts again on TUE 07 MAY. There are 5 teams (Beauly, Corriegarth, Merkinch, Redcliffe and Warriors) and they play Mon, Tue and Wed nights from 6–9pm until mid-Aug at FRASER PARK in Inverness. There is also a cup competition which is also played during these dates with the final usually on a Sunday in the middle of August. If anyone is interested in playing midweek cricket then pop along any night and have a chat to see if it’s for you. And if anyone thinks they could start up a new team for next year (2014) it would be most welcome as the organisers say they need some new blood to keep the league going. All ages and abilities are made welcome. For more details contact Martyn Beaton at [email protected]

THEATRE
CABARET COMEDY DANCE DRAMA MUSICAL

Flying High
You get the feeling that people will still be talking about MATTHEW BOURNE in a hundred years time. Though he spent fourteen years as a professional dancer, it’s his work as a choreographer that seems destined to immortalise him in the world of ballet, most notably his extraordinary version of Swan Lake. With his company New Adventures he’s consistently come up with award winning productions, one of his best being HIGHLAND FLING [1]. Now he’s updated his original 1994 show and it’s coming, courtesy of SCOTTISH BALLET to EDEN COURT from 09–11 MAY. A reworking of the classic ballet La Sylphide, this production of Highland Fling is rechoreographed and totally redesigned, bigger and even better than the 1994 original version - now with double the number of cast members. It tells the story of James, a young Glaswegian who is lured from his nuptial bed by an unearthly siren. As his love for this beautiful ‘Sylph’ becomes an obsession, he embarks on a journey that takes him from the mean streets and nightclubs of Glasgow into a magical world beyond. This gothic fable of winged fairies and kilted ladies - filled with all the wild excesses of romanticism - has been given an ingenious make-over by Bourne and is packed with all his trademark wit, magic and wicked humour. Nigh on unmissable. There’s also an accompanying “sociable evening for adults” on 08 MAY where you can take part in an enjoyable beginners’ ballet class before relaxing with refreshments and listening to behind-the-scenes tales. Promising to be just as spectacular is FLOWN [2] (EDEN COURT, SUN 05 & MON 06 MAY), presented by PIRATES OF THE CARABINA, a cutting-edge company of innovative British and international circus artists. Playing around with notions of the very performance itself, it sets up a scenario where the participants aren’t actually prepared for what they’re about to do, then transcends expectations courtesy of a dizzying array of acrobats, aerialists, dancers, musicians and stuntmen. An unusual and thrilling take on a night at the circus. From Pirates of the Carabina to PIRATES OF PENZANCE (EDEN COURT, 06–08 JUN). We’ll have more about this one next month, but as it’s a collaboration between SCOTTISH OPERA and D’OYLY CARTE, this version of Gilbert & Sullivan’s classic comes with impeccable credentials and tickets will go fast, so get yours sorted now. On a slightly smaller scale, but just as enjoyable looking is THE 39 STEPS (EDEN COURT EMPIRE, 28 MAY–01 JUN). Direct from the West End, Broadway and 25 countries around the globe, this inventive and gripping comedy adaptation of the familiar tale of cross-country high jinks to foil dastardly spies features four fearless actors, playing 139 roles in 100 minutes of fast-paced fun and thrilling action. Toasters...
Even though the humble toaster has been around for almost 100 years, toast is never going out of fashion - at least not in our house.
However, that s not to say that even classic designs can t be improved upon. Here are our favourites of the new innovations in the world of toasting. The Transparent Toaster Have your toast the way you want it. With this clear glass toaster you can see the toast turning brown and stop it when it reaches the exact shade you like.

The Notepad Toaster This toaster incorporates a little message board so you can write a quick message to the one you love, or a to do list for yourself. The message gets toasted into the toast itself so it gives you something to read while you eat.

The Sunrise Wall-Mounted Toaster The light emits while it is toasting and becomes progressively brighter until it shines like the sun, and your toast is done. So cool.

The Toasting Knife The light-saber knife that toasts the bread as it slices. OK, maybe this one is just an invention from Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy - but mark our words, there are clever people out there striving to make this a reality. . . Those buying to let have picked up considerably too and there seems to be a rising confidence in the market. Giving Up Smoking
If you are one of the many people all across the UK who took inspiration from the National No Smoking Day on March 13th and decided to give cigarettes the old heave ho - then we wonder how you are getting on 6 weeks down the line? Research shows that most relapses occur within the first 3 months of quitting. Don t be discouraged if you do have a slip ‒ Scotland has set itself an ambitious target to become tobacco-free (by having less than five per cent of the population smoking) by 2034 ‒ it will be worth you putting your relapse behind you and trying again. If you are needing some further encouragement and inspiration to keep you going then here is a timeline of what happens to your body once you ve given up smoking:
After 20 mins: After 8 hrs: After 48 hrs: After 72 hrs: After 2 weeks: weeks. After 3 to 9 months: After 1 year: After 5 years: After 10 years: After 15 years: Blood pressure will drop down to non smoker levels. Carbon monoxide levels in your blood stream will drop by half and oxygen levels will return to normal. Your chance of having a heart attack will have decreased. All nicotine will have left your body. Your sense of taste and smell will return to a normal level. Bronchial tubes will relax, and energy levels will increase. Circulation will increase, and it will continue to improve for the next 10 Coughs, wheezing and breathing problems will dissipate as your lung capacity improves by 10%. Risk of having a heart attack will have dropped by half. Risk of having a stroke returns to that of a non-smoker. Risk of lung cancer returns to that of a non-smoker. Risk of heart attack returns to that of a non-smoker.

So keep going, it s all downhill (or should that be uphill?) from here.

EATING OUT

Hootananny
Several months ago a friend and I were sitting in Hootananny one evening discussing important affairs of state, when we were approached by a visiting French couple enquiring as to where they could sample some traditional Scottish food. Hoots very raison d être revolving around a determinedly Scottish musical and cultural identity, they d assumed the kitchen would be doling out indigenous grub too, only to discover that the only food on offer was Thai.

67 Church Street, Inverness 01463 233651
least venison, salmon and the like could be had, albeit cooked in a French style. Which must have made them feel glad to have travelled abroad. It was always something of an anomaly that Hootanany only served Thai food, though it has to be said that it was unfailingly delicious and many of us ate regularly enough there to be able to order without even having to look at the menu. But as a staging post for tourists you sensed they were disappointed at not being able to find food that matched the environs, settling instead for something they could probably get in any other city in the world. So it wasn t entirely surprising when Hoots disbanded the Thai kitchen crew and instated a new Scottish menu. After all, Scottish food is enjoying a resurgence here, as our review of Urquharts in last month s issue demonstrated. But, unlike that place, Hootananny remains very much a bar, so the task was to introduce home-grown dishes while still retaining the informality that drives the venue. And they ve largely succeeded. Bringing in a chef from owner Kit Fraser s other highly successful restaurant down the road, Joy Of Taste, ensures a high quality of cooking, while the food itself provides all the traditional staples with a nice modern twist. It s something of a relief to find a stripped down menu, with enough options to provide for most tastes, but an admirable resistance to showy excess. Driven by smart business sense it s, quite literally a recipe for success.

My pal explained (in English, but helpfully with a French accent) that there really wasn t anywhere in Inverness to sample what could be described as traditional Scots food and wasn t entirely sure that there was such a thing, eventually directing them around the corner to The Mustard Seed, where at

45

Last time out I had soup as a starter for the first time in yonks and once again I choose that option, though soup is far too dismissive a description of something as majestic as one of North Scotland s greatest gifts to world cuisine, Cullen Skink. Even at its worst it s a step above just a bowl of something, and this version is the dish taken to sublime heights. Smoked haddock, potato, white wine, cream, saffron and chives combine exquisitely to produce something both simple but with a depth of flavour that rewards every mouthful. A glorious example of a truly brilliant taste experience. More taste bud delight in my companion s starter, another bowl of soup. This time it s Apple and Parsnip, a bold combination that actually works, celebrating what the French would call the terroir, the food of the land, to emphasise that this isn t just Scottish in terms of recipes, but also the food itself. Everything is locally sourced, including meat from butcher Duncan Fraser, delicious bread from the Cromarty Bakery and Black Isle ale in the batter for the haddock and chips (as well as, of course to accompany the meal), giving a real integrity to proceedings. For my main course I go for Venison Meatballs with Red Wine and Smoked Paprika Sauce, an enticing combination. There s no arguing, again, with the depth of flavour, but the presentation leaves something to be desired, being basically just a bowl of meat. Venison is inherently less fatty than beef, so the balls tend to collapse, leaving something that would

make a tremendous pasta sauce, but which doesn t work as well served merely with a side dish of new potatoes. If I were a tourist I d prefer either the pasta version or, better still, an actual venison steak to show off the distinctively wonderful flavour of the meat. It s a missed opportunity. My companion has Butternut Squash & Chickpea Casserole, delighted to find a vegetarian option on a menu that isn t the standby Macaroni Cheese commonly offered. It s pronounced nice enough without being really special, the cheese scones on top being a particularly impressive touch. There aren t any puddings, which is un-Scottish to the point of treachery. Surely something traditional like Cranachan or, let s be honest, a deep-fried Mars Bar, would provide the happy ending we re all after. Something to think about. All in all though, a fine meal and an excellent example of how to deliver a concept with both skill and confidence. Next time that French couple coming in asking where to find great traditional Scottish food, we ll know exactly what to say - ici . . . Price for 2: £24.35 (exc. drinks)
