Naughtie but Nice.
Radio 4 legend James heads up the Nairn Book & Arts Festival.

issue 133 Sept 2013

Local radio just got interesting: Monster FM returns for another stint through September!
“…Monster FM is back for 2013 and this year we’ve had to buy a new mantelpiece. Since we were last on air we’ve picked up an award for the Best Gaelic entry at the Highland & Islands Media Awards. This was presented to the station in appreciation of the bilingual Local News, Sport and Showbiz bulletins which were voiced by our students Gavin Gilchrist and Roya MacLean. Another student of ours, Donald Shields, had the opportunity to travel to The Gambia for a significant period. He took the chance to bring back parts of Africa with him in the form of audio which then formed a special programme going on to collect Best Documentary at the New York Festival. This September will be jam packed with more potential as we showcase the talent of this year’s trainees. Back by popular demand is the bilingual Gaelic Sports Show; the team’s focus is to bring you small sport on a bigger playing field. They’ll cover all the action from ICT to Clach to Inverness City, plus sport fans will get all the insider news on shinty and what’s going on at club level when it comes to curling, tennis, bowls and golf. On weekdays, we’ll speak to the right people as we bring you something a bit different. We’ll look at the Highland lifestyle, help to rehome unloved animals, take care of your wellbeing, provide some tips and advice on being safer in the community and at home and we’ll make sure the kids are sorted with a bedtime story. The Monster FM studio will be pumping on a Friday night as it transforms into the North of Scotland’s Dance Destination. Firstly, student Veronica Finlayson will educate you on the roots of the genre with her specialist show Dance Floor Approved, then Calum Urquhart will keep you in the party mood with his Trance Anthems. The finale of the evening comes from the sensational Soundclash DJs, who have recently performed at Rockness and Belladrum. The dynamic duo have been holding regular club nights at Karma Lounge in Inverness and their beats have been shared through online streaming of their gigs. When the guys and their associates mixed it up last year, we saw the Monster FM audience and social media activity go global. From Balloch to Brazil and Hilton to Holland, these guys blow the roof off the sucker! 2013 will feature more top DJ and Producer talent from across the North of Scotland and venture further afield with the likes of Krazzy Martin (Snafu, Aberdeen) Kappa & Beta (Sub Club, Glasgow) Jakk it & Saizme (We Own, Edinburgh) as Soundclash Sessions continues to grow. Disco King David Campbell is back to spin his

Shiny Disco Ball fresh from his summer stint
on Worthy FM (the radio station which broadcasts from Glastonbury during the festival). Other specialist shows will include Lewis Murray with his love of Rock’n’Roll (It’s Only Rock n’

Roll), Gerald Holdsworth will celebrate 60 Years of Music Gold and pupils across Inverness
schools can voice their choice of music Monday to Thursday nights on School Sounds. We’ve a

Chill Out show for you to listen in bed to on a
Sunday, one of the students plans to do a show based on his dad’s choice of music called Tracks

of His Years and after the success of working
with Inverness Old Town Arts (IOTA) last year, one of our new students Carol Hutchison will collate as much culture as she can from the scene on the weekly Arts Show…

Be de ya - say do you remember?
Can t beat a bit of Earth, Wind & Fire at this time of year, eh? Well, yes, perhaps you can - but why would you? It was the 70s - let it go, will you? Jeez! Anyway - you didn t pick this up to be baffled, if we know you, you want entertaining. So entertain you we shall. Right. Now. . . So, in the netherworld betwixt s*mmer and a*t*mn that is Septembrrrr, what treasures might you find to tickle your entertainment bones? Well, as usual, there s loads - but we can tell you right now that poking out the top of the packets you ll see the following: Art: Much great art as part of the Nairn Book & Arts Festival, inc Gerald Laing and Eugenia Vronskaya ‒ and a (as per usual) curious looking thing at H-I-C-A. . . Film: Filth, utter filth. Literally, actually, as Jon S Baird s adaptation of national treasure Irvine Welshs book is released, with JAMES MCAVOY at his most objectionable. That and some other people in some other stuff. About James Hunt and a gay couple with a mentally handicapped teenager and some Dundee rappers. Not all in the same film, you understand. Kids: An Australovenator. It s some kind of Aussie dinosaur. For kids. Dino Zoo. Music: We re gonna need a bigger boat. The shark that is music this month has teeth the size of the Blas Festival, Loopallu (with The Enemy and Newton Faulkner), The Magic Numbers, Tim Burgess and Dick Gaughan put together. Big, big, musical teeth. Specials: The behemoth of writers, speakers, art, films, music, drama and more that is the (tenth, wow!) Nairn Book & Arts Festival rolls in and dominates the landscape - that and Highland Councils Doors Open Days and the Moray Culture Day. Sport: Probably able to lay the most legitimate claim as the monster of Loch Ness, the Loch Ness Marathon rears its head again, plus more footy. . . Theatre: Always nice to welcome stars of the small screen and we say hello to ROBERTA (The Bill, Eastenders) TAYLOR - who stars all over the Highlands in The Baroness. See her interview P20. Also worth checking out: Pip Utton s Adolf, Buddy - The Buddy Holly Story, Long Live The Little Knife, Ed Byrne s Roaring Forties and (tv comedian) Sara Pascoe - who appears as part of Nairn B&A Fest. Elsewhere, you ll find wee gems ‒ Ken Kelman s column, features on the spidery Dear Ingo chandelier, back to school health tips and our food review. And remember: songs mean a lot, when songs are bought. . .

Laing was one Nairn Book & physically Arts Festival of influential artists of post-war Britain and it’s 3rd – the 8th most September 2013 frustrating that Charity his status as a long-resident Highlander Registered SC037105. isn’t celebrated as much as it should be, especially now he’s no longer with us. This collection of some of his finest works should at least prove just how good he was. Another significant artist working here is EUGENIA VRONSKAYA and her show, again at THE COURT HOUSE is called BEYOND GLASS – LIFE ON THE WINDOW SILL. As she explains, the title comes from how the paintings, including new works, “seek to express the unity of our inner lives with our existence in the physical world, distilling this through the metaphor of the window and what lies on either side of it”. Both the above exhibitions are free, but VRONSKAYA is also hosting a PORTRAIT AND SELF PORTRAIT PAINTING WORKSHOP at NAIRN COMMUNITY & ARTS CENTRE on WED 04 SEP from 10am–4pm, which costs £65 including lunch. She will explore how to compose a portrait and render the complex form of the head in two dimensions, and how to create a successful self portrait through expression of individuality and character, something she achieved rather adeptly with her “Iconistas” project, where she painted 120 portrait sketches of a diverse range of local people and visiting actors, which is on display in the foyer at Eden Court. The event is limited to just ten places so book now if you’re interested at www.nairnfestival.co.uk It’s there that you’ll find details of all the art events taking place with other highlights including some never before seen oil paintings at Nairn Museum, unframed paintings pegged in windows throughout the town, an exhibition of work by Art and Design students at Nairn Academy, including handmade books and design projects, and a talk by local arts champion ROBERT LIVINGSTON with the gloriously ambitious title PAINT: THE FIRST 40,000 YEARS. We’re fully expecting Nairn to have something of the atmosphere of Left Bank Paris for the duration. more at: whatsonhighlands.com

FILM
COMEDY DOCUMENTARY DRAMA FAMILY ROMANCE

Back To The Future
Younger readers might not believe it, but there was a time when the highest grossing movies in Hollywood weren’t CGI blockbusters, one of the most notable successes being a domestic tug-of-love drama called Kramer Vs Kramer, wherein Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep got divorced and decided who got custody of their son. And that was pretty much it [Erm, think you’re forgetting the ice-cream - Ed]. As if to prove that everything is cyclical, similar ground is covered in not one, but two movies this month. WHAT MAISIE KNEW [1] (EDEN COURT, 20–26 SEP) is an adaptation of the Henry James novel about a child witnessing her parents’ imploding marriage that could well have been a load of sentimental tosh save that it stars STEVE COOGAN and arguably the world’s greatest living English speaking actress JULIANNE MOORE. Meanwhile, ANY DAY NOW (EDEN COURT, 27SEP-03 OCT), finds none other than local lad ALAN CUMMING in a 70s based yarn about a gay couple taking in a mentally handicapped teenager and fighting the courts to keep custody. In neither film does a bunch of superheroes have a fist fight, so it’s progress of sorts. Not that you’re short of more raucous cinematic options this month. The long-awaited adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s FILTH [2] finally comes to the big screen with JAMES MCAVOY scene-stealing as bent copper Bruce and the welcome return of the marvellous SHIRLEY HENDERSON. Welsh is letting it open in Scotland ahead of anywhere else so you should be able to see it from 27 SEP onwards. Equally louche was racing driver JAMES HUNT and his life is celebrated in Ron Howard’s newie, RUSH [3] (EDEN COURT, 27 SEP–03 OCT) which traces the 1970s rivalry between Hunt and Nikki Lauda in an age when you could turn up to race in a Grand Prix after a night on the tiles, knowing that even sober your life expectancy as a driver was often measured in weeks. The racing sequences are apparently impressive and it looks set to become one of the definitive movies about the sport. Others to look out for this month are: THE GREAT HIP HOP HOAX (EDEN COURT, 06–10 SEP) telling the true story of a Dundee rap duo who convinced a major record label they were American for five years; Richard Curtis’ time travel tearjerker ABOUT TIME (04–19 SEP) and UPSTREAM COLOUR (EDEN COURT, 20–26 SEP) from director Shane Carruth which, if it’s anything like his own time travel flick Primer, should be bracingly baffling. In a good way. Finally, just to emphasise that sometimes the old stuff can be a whole lot better than the new, there’s a screening of Sergei Eisenstein’s peerless 1925 silent classic BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN on TUE 03 SEP with live musical accompaniment – part of the NAIRN BOOK & ARTS FESTIVAL about which you can read more in Art and Specials…

MUSIC
CLASSICAL CLUBBING FOLK JAZZ/WORLD ROCK

Summer’s Last Hurrah
Autumn may be bearing down on us, but the festival season isn’t over just yet, oh no. And two of the most enduringly popular take place this month. BLAS [1], which runs from 06–14 SEP has, despite funding issues over the years, established itself as the prime source for celebrating Gaelic music and culture throughout the Highlands, attracting visitors from all over the world and taking performances to outlying communities as well as major venues. See the centre page pull-out in this issue for event details, from opening night gala with MANRAN and CRUINN, to closing finale feat. CAPERCAILLIE, SEAMUS BEGLEY & JIM MURRAY an excerpt from the Blas Commission – Calum MacCrimmon’s ‘Boraraig’, sandwiching gigs involving RACHEL HAIR TRIO, THE SHEE, the awesome MANUS LUNNY, a collaboration between FIONA J MACKENZIE and NATIONAL THEATRE OF SCOTLAND and much more. Another much loved get together is LOOPALLU up in ULLAPOOL (20 & 21 SEP) where for its regular fans the socialising is just as important as the line-up. The roster itself includes THE ENEMY [2], NEWTON FAULKNER [3], RODDY WOOMBLE and old ska faves THE BEAT. And expect to encounter many spontaneous shindigs in the town’s hostelries. Another event that’s still finding its feet, but which looks like establishing itself in locals’ hearts in forthcoming years is JOCKTOBERFEST over at BLACK ISLE BREWERY on 06 & 07 SEP. The theme this year is 1940s (presumably without the constant threat of imminent death from bombs, TB and a diet of powdered egg), so expect lots of zeitgeisty vintage fashion alongside the fine beer, great food and slew of top local bands including RED RONSON [4], BE LIKE PABLO, LEONARD JONES POTENTIAL and WILLIE & TABS MACASKILL. Back in Inverness, there’s plenty to tickle our fancy with coincidentally, a host of “young veterans” out to prove they’re just as good as ever: THE MAGIC NUMBERS [5] bring their delightful Mamas & Papas influenced harmonising to IRONWORKS on THU 19 SEP as part of an acoustic tour, having spent the past couple of years collaborating with the likes of Damon Albarn. They’ve got a new album of their own out next year and you’re bound to hear some tasters. TIM BURGESS [6] has carved out a most interesting solo career in recent times, even becoming something of a coffee entrepreneur online while he’s at it. His solo work shows he retains a fine knack for songwriting and he might even throw a few old Charlatans songs into the mix. With the tragic death of Jon Brookes, the future of that band is as yet undecided, but, as one of the good guys, it’s always nice to have Tim in our world. Another fine fellow is MARK MORRISS, ex of The Bluetones, who’ll be playing his smart creations at MADHATTERS on SUN 29 SEP. And HOOTANANNY is also the place to go for a cultural exchange on SUN 15 SEP bringing some London reggae to town in the form of JAH REVOLUTION and others. Finally, one of the world’s finest folk singers, DICK GAUGHAN is at UNIVERSAL HALL, FINDHORN on FRI 13 SEP, telling stories, singing songs and generally wiping the floor with all competition.

I In The City - The Jam A great tune, the spirit of the song meant a lot to us when we first started the band. We covered it on one of our tours which went down really well. I Baba O’Riley - The Who This song is played before we go onstage at most of our gigs, an immense tune! Really puts us in the mood to go out and play the gig. The crowd always seem to clap and stamp along too. The Who are one of our favourite bands. I Sit Down - James A song which we have recently been covering in our set and collectively one of our all time favourite tunes. Such great lyrics! ‘If I hadn’t seen such riches, I could live with being poor’ Everyone likes a sing along to this tune! I Common People - Pulp A bit of a party song of ours, on numerous occasions over the years when we’ve been out this has came on at the perfect moment in the night, we’ve all sang it at the top of our voices and lost the plot ha-ha. Always gets us hyped. I Tender - Blur A song that we use to warm up to in the dressing room before we go on, have a sing and loosen up then go onstage and smash it.

Ken Kelman:
Why is it all of a sudden everyone wants to know my opinion of what they’re up to? Seems every time I take to the road the vans that hurl past have stickers asking “How’s my driving?” followed by a phone number that I couldn’t hope to write down or even commit to memory before they’re off hurling past someone else. And now my preferred sandwich supplier is at it, offering me ‘a cookie’ if I spare a minute to tell them “how they did” …here’s a quick suggestion: stop referring to biscuits as cookies.
Dear Van Driver, I just wanted to say that for the brief period I was behind you on the A9 your van driving seemed fine to me. Not that I’m really in anyway qualified to make that assessment other than being a motorist myself – I only really have my driving to go on as a comparison. So what I guess I’m saying is your driving is no better or worse that mine, though to be honest I probably wouldn’t have over-taken my car in your van at that point just so I could pull in sharp in front of me and spray my windscreen with dirty rain water. I suppose then what I’m really saying is that in my estimation your standard of driving is slightly poorer than mine. I know that’s still not really a quantifiable answer given that you don’t know how good my driving is but I have recently placed a sticker on my car asking other road users for their opinion and rest assured that once I get the results from them I will be back with a more definite answer on the state of your driving. Yours, sincerely, Ken Kelman …a fellow motorist.
17:56

Dear Sandwich Company, Thank you for your enquiry as to how I think you did when you recently sold me a sandwich. In as much as I entered your shop with the desire to purchase a sandwich and I left with a sandwich, your did pretty much as I would have expected a sandwich shop to do - you sold me a sandwich. If I might offer a bit of advice though, I think you should maybe relax and stop worrying too much about what other people think of what you‘re doing. I’m sure if one day a customer asks you for a sandwich and you supply them with a paperback book instead they’ll soon let you know, certainly after they bite into it – a paperback book being a bit tougher and lest tasty than the majority of sandwiches.

ROBERTA TAYLOR: The Baroness

Various Highland Venues, 30 Aug–21 Sep
The excellent Dogstar Theatre Company are back in the Highlands this month with The Baroness, a play by Thor Bjorn Krebs that’s already been a smash in his native Denmark. Telling the story of Karen Blixen, writer of Out Of Africa, and the relationship she had at 62 with a young poet and writer, it stars Roberta Taylor in the title role. Best known for her parts in Eastenders and The Bill, Taylor is returning to the Scottish stage where she first developed her craft. We caught up with her for a quick-fire Q&A. I Was acting always in your blood? No. I What did you want to be when you were ten years old? A barrister or Ms Kitty from Gunsmoke. I When did you first walk on stage? 1971. I You spent some time as part of Glasgow’s Citizens Theatre. What are your memories of that? Naughtiness. I Scotland always had a reputation for strong political theatre. Do you think that still exists? Not enough. I How different is your acting life when you take on long running parts in series like Eastenders and The Bill? Pretty much the same, I’m still acting though you don’t have the chance to have fun in rehearsals like you do with theatre. I Do you have to trade adrenaline for job security? What is job security for any of us these days? We are all working on adrenaline. I Tell us about The Baroness. How did you come to be involved? Is it a role you can have fun with? Matthew (Zajac), the director, and I go a long way back and he asked me if I’d take the part. I trusted him so I took it. I love the weirdness of the piece. The Baroness is everything I think all human beings are if they allowed themselves to show their monster within. She may not be human to you but is to me. I What would be your dream job? A leading part with no lines. I Which three actors would you pay to go and see no matter what they were in? Klaus Maria Brandauer, Peter Guiness (my husband) and Miranda Richardson. The Baroness is on throughout the Highlands this month, inc. Strathpeffer, Resolis, Findhorn, Gordonstoun and Inverness - See p35 & listings for details.

ROMEO STODART: The Magic Numbers
Ironworks, Thu 19 Sep
THE MAGIC NUMBERS are back. And playing IRONWORKS on THU 19 SEP as part of an acoustic tour. We asked the band’s ROMEO STODART to tell us more. I You’ve been out of the public eye to an extent recently. What, if anything, went wrong? Or were you just enjoying yourselves under the radar? I think it’s really important to retreat back into the woods. To live. Whether it be starting a family or continuing your own personal journey. You need to discover things about yourself and have real experiences with people so it enhances what you write about. It can be really healthy stepping away from the limelight so to speak, whether by choice or it just being the nature of this beast, people move on, you’re not always going to be centre of attention and to be honest nor would I want that to be the case. I We hear you’ve spent a lot of time in South America. What’s the attraction and how is it influencing what you do? We just love it out there, love the people, love the music. South American fans are incredibly passionate; we’ve had some truly special shows over there. We recently recorded a version of a Caetano Veloso song ‘You Don’t Know Me’ to commemorate his 70th birthday; he was one of the originators of the Brazilian Tropicalia music movement which I’ve been obsessed with for a very long time. I You played up here at the Belladrum Festival a few years back. How do you like Highland audiences? That was great fun, I remember the audience being really into it, can’t believe it’s been such a long time since we’ve played up in the Highlands; we’re really looking forward to it. Come one, come all. Promise a night to remember, no pressure :0) Read the FULL INTERVIEW online at:

Naughty, Naughtie
Elsewhere in this issue you can read about the plethora of visual treats on show at the NAIRN BOOK & ARTS FESTIVAL which runs from 03–08 SEP. As the name suggests though, it’s not just about paintings and there are plenty of other events throughout the week of the event that are well worth checking out. We’ll certainly be interested in what JAMES NAUGHTIE has to say when he appears on 03 SEP. The Radio 4 stalwart has, by his own admission, had a “ringside seat” to much of the political shenanigans of the past twenty years and he’ll be he taking the audience behind the scenes of Radio 4’s Today programme and talking about a life in newspapers and broadcasting that has taken him round the world. As we go to press, Naughtie is at the centre of (ironically), a media hoo-ha for pointing out that Edinburgh’s welcome to visitors is “embarrassing, cheap and nasty”, so it’s just as well that he’s ensconced in Nairn and doesn’t have to pass judgement on some of Inverness’ failings. The old dog’s still snarling. Another guest well worth checking out is author EVE HARRIS on FRI 06 SEP. Her latest book The Marrying of Chani Kaufman has just made the Booker list for locally based independent publisher Sandstone and it’ll be interesting to hear the inspiration behind her tale of repressed desire and bubbling secrets in the ultra Orthodox Jewish community. Passions of quite a different hue will be on show when DANNY ALEXANDER and FERGUS EWING debate Independence on SUN 08 SEP, the first of many times in the next year when the same old argument will be tossed back and forth. At least these two are getting their oars in relatively early so shouldn’t induce catatonia quite as swiftly as will undoubtedly be the case come 2014. If you think you have something original to ask them then submit questions in writing to NBAF, c/o Nairn Community and Arts Centre, Nairn by Thu 29 Aug. Elsewhere in the fest, highlights include ALEC FINLAY and KEN COCKBURN presenting poetry and words inspired by Boswell and Johnson’s Hebridean travels, music from GILLIAN FRAME and FINLAY NAPIER and a FOOD FAIR bringing together some of the best local producers. For details of all the events see our website at www.whatsonhighlands.com and the festival site atnairnfestival.co.uk If the food fair sounds like fun, you’ll also want to check out LIVING FOOD at CAWDOR CASTLE which returns on SAT 21 SEP. This celebration of Highland, artisan food and drink producers, many organic, will find marquees, in the stunning setting of Cawdor Castle, full of people telling the story of their produce complimented by delicious food and drink served all day, local crafts and family entertainment. SPORT
ATHLETIC BALL COMBAT EXTREME RACING

The Really Great North Run

A little earlier in the year than usual, the BAXTER’S LOCH NESS MARATHON AND FESTIVAL OF RUNNING takes place on 29 SEP and at that time of year should be even more aesthetically inspiring than ever, making us wonder why it still doesn’t get the live TV coverage it deserves. Especially since, over the past twelve years, it’s become one of the most popular events on the worldwide running calendar, attracting more than 8,000 competitors. With this being The Year Of Natural Scotland you would have imagined there could be no better way to publicise such a fact than by showing athletes racing against the breathtaking backdrop that constitutes the route. Not that such lack of imagination publicity wise has put off those competing and this year’s event looks like being better than ever, bringing together serious runners as well as those trying out not just the marathon, but also the 10K and 5K runs, no doubt with the intention of doing The Mobot at some point during the day. It’s a great day out for competitors and spectators alike, with lots of food and entertainment (including a Pasta Party) at the Event Village in Bught Park. For more details see lochnessmarathon.co.uk Perhaps in tribute to such athleticism, INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE started the new footer season up and running with the same kind of determination as they approached much of the last campaign. Billy McKay seems as much of a fox in the box as ever, meaning that ICT even managed to top the table after the first couple of weeks. Their game against the less than impressive Hibs on 28 SEP should give them a fine opportunity to secure another victory. Things haven’t started quite so well for ROSS COUNTY, but when it comes to their match against HEARTS on 21 SEP, the latter’s points deduction means the Dingwall side will still be kept off the foot of the table. Derek Adams will be hoping his team get into gear pretty sharpish though as this season looks like being more competitive than last time round, as new boys Partick Thistle’s dismantling of County demonstrated.

THEATRE
CABARET COMEDY DANCE DRAMA MUSICAL

Taylor of Inverness
You’ll know ROBERTA TAYLOR. If not by name then for her roles as Irene Raymond in Eastenders and Inspector Gina Gold in The Bill. But she hasn’t spent her days just squabbling in the square or embarking on yet another attempt to quell crime on Sun Hill’s terrifying Jasmine Allen estate. In fact she’s had a rich and enduring career as one of the country’s finest stage actresses, making her mark as part of Glasgow’s Citizens Theatre throughout the 1980s. Now she’s back in Scotland with the excellent Dogstar Theatre Company in the title role of THE BARONESS [1], a play by Thor Bjorn Krebs which tours the Highlands, debuting in Stornoway on 30 AUG before coming to STRATHPEFFER PAVILION (03 SEP), then being performed throughout the region including RESOLIS MEMORIAL HALL (17 SEP), UNIVERSAL HALL, FINDHORN (18 SEP), GORDONSTOUN SCHOOL (19 SEP) and EDEN COURT (20 & 21 SEP). Directed by ICA favourite, Matthew “Tailor Of Inverness” Zajac, it tells the story of the intense friendship between the 62-year-old Karen Blixen, the writer of Out of Africa, and Thorkild Bjornvig, 29 years old and, at the time a rising star of Danish poetry. A smashhit in Denmark, it’s an extraordinary piece of theatre, made all the more impressive by accompanying music from LAU’s Aiden O’Rourke. See our interview with Taylor on p20. A rather more hackneyed yarn, but just as much of a commercial success is BUDDY –THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY [2] (EDEN COURT, 23–28 SEP). The first notable tragic rock’n’roll martyr, Holly influenced a whole generation of musicians, most notably The Beatles and without him we’d probably all still be doing the Charleston. This show gives you all his hits, of which there are so many that we can almost forgive it for billing itself as “Peggy Sue-perb.” We’ll also be checking out LONG LIVE THE LITTLE KNIFE [3] at ARDROSS COMMUNITY HALL on 30 AUG and EDEN COURT on 01 SEP, a multi award-winning show from the Fringe about “art forgery, castration and blind drunkenness”. Liz and Jim are smalltime con artists who need £250,000 fast. They decide to become the world’s greatest counterfeiters. There’s only one problem. They can’t paint. A caper ensues and it all looks like something of a riot. Recommended. As is ED BYRNE. The Irish comedian is something of a veteran stand-up, as are most of his peers on the scene and it’s the process of getting older that he examines in ROARING FORTIES [4] at EDEN COURT on 29 SEP. He’s been getting rave reviews from the show during its Edinburgh run, so expect to find him at the top of his game. From a seasoned standup to one of comedy’s rising talents. Back at Nairn Book & Arts Festival, SARA PASCOE [5] is appearing on SAT 07 SEP at NAIRN COMMUNITY & ARTS CENTRE. A smart, original comedian, she’s done her share of TV, but is best experienced live. Well worth seeing. More details in the listings & at www.whatsonhighlands.com

Anglepoise Arachnid

The Dear Ingo Chandelier by Ron Gilad. . .
No need for any dark corners in your house with this unique chandelier by famed Israeli designer Ron Gilad. Known for his functional and minimalistic approach to interior design, Gilad has taught in some of the top design schools in the world. The Dear Ingo Chandelier has no fewer than 16 completely adjustable lamps, allowing you to direct light to any part of the room you want. This dynamic, spider-like chandelier would provide a spectacular centre piece for a large room as well as giving all the light you need. You can change the shape of the chandelier by adjusting the robotic-like arms, to achieve the exact right look for your room. It is a witty and original take on the classic anglepoise lamp and is even deemed a genuine work of art, as it is on permanent display at the Art Institute of Chicago. Manufacturered by cutting edge Dutch design firm Moooi and available for order in the uk from clippings.com at a fairly hefty £2,286 but the shipping is free so go mad!

Making The Most Of You:

health

Back to school health tips
By the time you read this you will be, most likely, getting your wee ones ready to face the prospect of settling back into a long term at school after the long summer break. It can be hard for parents and children alike to get back into the routine, and routine is exactly what you need in order for a busy school life to run smoothly. Here are a few simple tips to help you set them up for a healthy and hopefully, happy new year at school. 1. Bedtime routine
After they have been running wild for the past 7 weeks and bedtimes have slipped later and later it can be very hard to reign it back in again, but sleep plays a significant role in brain development, and it is therefore important for children to get enough sleep as their bodies grow and mature. Sleep is crucial for teenagers - it is while they are asleep that they release a hormone that is essential for the growth spurt during puberty. Lack of sleep makes it much harder for us to concentrate and scientific evidence shows that the right amount of night-time sleep is just as important for children s development as healthy eating and regular exercise. So try to make sure your primary school child get 10‒12 hrs and your teenagers 8‒10 hrs.

2. A healthy breakfast

Though the mornings can be a bit hectic, try to make your child a nutritious breakfast - missing breakfast can result in kids feeling tired, restless or irritable. Their bodies need to fuel-up after not eating during those 8‒12 hours sleep above. Quick tips: Avoid the high sugar cereals and cereal bars. ¦ Use brown bread for toast. ¦ If all else fails, a piece of fruit is a good quick choice.

3. Water

It is very important for kids to keep hydrated. Make a water bottle part of your child s daily school gear ‒ you ll be saving money, keeping your child away from unhealthy alternatives and saving disposable water bottle waste.

4. Lunch safety

If your kids bring a packed lunch with them then you are more able to determine that they eat healthily during the day. However what you must remember is that the food in that lunchbox will be sitting around in a usually warm environment for several hours before your child gets to it, so you need to add a few precautions to make sure the lunch stays as good as when you pack it. Use an insulated lunch bag, to help keep the food fresh - if possible, use an ice-pack with foods like sandwiches, and cheese or yoghurts. The cooler a food starts out in a lunchbox, the better. Avoid the processed convenience lunch products on offer in every supermarket, they are often pumped full of hidden sugars and fat. Finally wash the lunch bag and all containers after each use with hot, soapy water to get rid of any bacteria.

5. Love

Finally, remember how tough school can be sometimes and give them a big hug when they come home - yes, even the big spotty teenage ones!

EATING OUT

The Corner Bar & Bistro
50 Union Street, Inverness
Having reviewed restaurants in the Highlands for over 12 years now, I expect a certain amount of repeat visits ‒ but when it is suggested by ICA that I review The Corner Bar & Bistro this month I am ready to mutiny. I ate there a few years ago and though it wasn t a terrible meal overall, there was a bit of an incident over a burger, involving a discussion over whether you can really call a large mushroom stuffed in a bap, a mushroom burger . After telling my scarring tale about the mushroom burger/ not burger and saying I was not sure I could go through it all again, I was told to fear not because the Corner Grill as was, is no more and whilst they are still indeed on and still bear the name of the corner, it is now under new management and mushroomburger-gate is no more. So, always happy to oblige, I trundle along. The decor remains largely

and meaty cheese that works great cooked or uncooked. This was a simple dish, the halloumi cut pleasantly thick and pan fried to perfection served with a crisp, dressed salad which unfortunately did not contain the Parmesan in the title. It was, however, yummy. My partner chose the Oven Baked Camembert with Red Onion, Chilli Chutney and warm Rosemary Bread. This is actually

unchanged and that is no bad thing. It has a curious mix of styles inside including some large art pieces that draw the eye and a European appeal that seems to bring in the tourists in droves. It s the sort of place where you can feel comfortable if you are on holiday and feel adventurous if you live here. It is run by a small team and it is a pretty smooth, norush, relaxed affair even though the place is packed out. We got our drinks and placed our order quickly but then had quite a wait for the food ‒ which was fine as we weren t in a particular rush and the sofa I was sitting on was lovely and comfortable. My starter, when it did arrive, was delicious. Pan Fried

Halloumi with Wild Rocket and Parmesan Salad. I am noticing

Halloumi ‒ a semi soft cheese from Cyprus ‒ popping up on more and more menus at the moment, and quite rightly. It is a very versatile

on the sharing menu and it was indeed a feast. A whole gooey, melting Camembert with a stack of Rosemary focaccia bread. It did not however contain the Red Onion which was in the title ‒ was there a pattern building here? It was simplicity itself, this dish. Cheese and bread however can be lifted to iconic status when it is the right cheese and the right bread and this was both of those. The red onion would have been very

complimentary to the dish, adding a bit of depth of flavour, however it wasn t to be. The Mains menu has great variety and certainly offers something for everyone but I would say by far and away the most popular item on that menu when I was there was the enormous Gourmet Beef Burger with mushroom, tomato and red onion. Served with chunky chips (which looked amazing) and salad. At just £7.95 it is a great value meal and seemed to be going down extremely well. I however ordered

uniformly presented - black slate, clean and modern, all pretty stylish. The Trufito was not so stylish though, it should have looked a bit like a chocolate tea-cake or bomb but the chocolate shell on the outside was all cracked and broken. So although it did not look beautiful it was a satisfying enough sweet. A far superior dessert was my partner s choice of Champagne

Hot Coriander, Mushroom expecting that by now. The two Risotto served with Warm Herb different sorbets though were in Bread, only ‒ you ve guessed it ‒ fact quite special. The light, bubbly
there was no herb bread, though there was a small side salad. Hum. The risotto was the sort you can stand a spoon up in and I must say although the flavours in this were lovely, I do prefer the more traditional creamy consistency rather than this solid stuff.

cream

and Raspberry Sorbets with Wild Berries and Whipped Cream. There was no whipped
but hey-ho, we were

textured champagne sorbet nestling at the bottom of the glass with 2 scoops of gorgeous dark pink raspberry sorbet on top - they looked like 2 beautiful roses and the flavour was immense. So all in all, a pretty satisfying meal. The place looked good, the staff were friendly and efficient and most of the food was above average. I did spend most of the meal regretting not ordering a side of their chunky chips as each table around took delivery of their bowls of crispy delights, so I will definitely go back.

Not such great value at £8.25 (no longer it seems is a salad the cheap option on the menu) but all ingredients were at least present and correct (although there were more green olives than black). It was a beautiful fresh salad, with lots of variety and different textures set off by a sweet balsamic dressing. There was a good choice of desserts and I plumped for the Chocolate

My partner chose a Black Olive, Sun Dried Tomato and Wild Rocket Salad with Greek Feta Cheese and Rosemary Dressing.

We weren t offered the lunchtime deal menu (offering 2 courses for £9.95 Mon-Fri 12‒2.30pm), so ask for that if you think it suits you.
