The Missouri Comprehensive Guidance Program (MCGP) is based on a developmental
curriculum framework and is implemented through four program components: Guidance
Curriculum (classroom guidance), ndividual Planning (planning for the future), !esponsive
"ervices (responding to uni#ue needs of individuals and groups) and "$stem "upport (guidance
program support, e%g%, research, outreach)% This Guide (ndividual Planning) for Professional
"chool Counselors (P"C) is one of si& developed with the support of the Missouri 'epartment of
(lementar$ and "econdar$ (ducation ('("() and the Missouri Center for Career (ducation
(MCC()% The si& guides, designed to support P"Cs as the$ lead the implementation of their
districts) Comprehensive Guidance Program, are:

The ndividual Planning component of the MCGP emphasi-es the importance of planning as
students prepare for the future% .earning how to plan is a critical aspect of preparation%
ndividual Planning is a process that formall$ begins when a child enters the school% The
process includes ac#uiring personal knowledge, skills, and understanding in the strands of the
Comprehensive Guidance Program Curriculum: Personal,"ocial, /cademic 'evelopment and
Career 'evelopment% These strands include the core school and life competencies and form
the framework for the Missouri Comprehensive Guidance Program% Classroom guidance
lessons, aligned with grade level e&pectations, in each of these strands are introduced at the
elementar$ level and continue through middle and high school, providing the foundation for
individual planning%
/t the elementar$ school level, students e&plore opportunities within each of the Career Paths%
The emphases in elementar$ school are two0fold: 1% To help students learn more about
themselves, their interests, abilities and aptitudes along with academic knowledge and skills2 3%
To help students learn about the world of work and workers4the importance of all work and
what people do when the$ go to work%
'uring middle school, students have opportunities for more in0depth e&plorations in the career
pathwa$s that reflect their emerging preferences in such things as school and communit$
activities, sub5ect areas and their strengths and limitations% Middle school ndividual Planning
includes gathering information about specific careers within the career paths of greatest interest
to individual students% /s students prepare for the transition from middle school to high school,
the$ are re#uired to develop a Personal Plan of "tud$%

Career Paths e&plored during elementar$ and middle school merge into Career Clusters in late
middle school and high school% /s a result of the ndividual Planning activities in which students
engaged during elementar$ and middle school, the$ will be able to appl$ what the$ have learned
about themselves and career paths of interest to occupations within a primar$ Career Cluster%
This focus will help them continue their e&plorations in a deliberate manner% "tudents are
encouraged to gain work e&perience within their Career Clusters of interest% /s the$ progress
through high school, the$ will review and modif$ their Personal Plans of "tud$ based on new

institutions, prepared this ndividual Planning "tudent >andbook% The purpose of
this handbook is to provide assistance to students, parents and P"Cs in
developing and updating the students) Personal Plans of "tud$% "tudents need to
take into consideration their interests, abilities and talents when choosing a career
path and cluster% The intent is not to have students choose a specific occupation,
but to see the broader career pathwa$s and select courses that will enable them to
get as much knowledge and as man$ skills as possible given their individual
interests and needs%

a student knows what direction the$ want to focus their energ$, the$ need to
