It opens with a default inorganic compound and all the details pertaining to that compound. Click the pull down arrow of "Select a compound" combo box. You will be presented with a list of all inorganic compounds included in the software. Select by clicking the name of any one of the inorganic compounds listed. The Inorganic compounds window will display all the data pertaining the selected compound. It displays the NFPA 704 fire diamond of the compound at top right hand side. It also displays 3D custom color animation of the selected compound. Click "View Full Screen" button. The software displays the scaled-up 3D custom color animation of the selected compound in "Full Screen Mode", which occupies the entire screen of your computer.

Click "Close Full Screen" button to switch back to normal view. To view information pertaining to another compound, click the pull down arrow of "Select a compound" combo box. You will be presented with a list of all inorganic compounds included in the software. Select by clicking the name of any other inorganic compound listed. The Inorganic compounds window will display all the data pertaining the newly selected compound. In the same way, you can view the information and animation pertaining to all the listed inorganic compounds.

How to customize and control the 3D molecular animation ?
Click "View Full Screen" button. The software displays the scaled-up 3D custom color animation of the selected compound in "Full Screen Mode", which occupies the entire screen of your computer. Customization and control of 3D molecular animation can be done very easily by moving the mouse across the animation area. When the mouse is away from the center of the animation area, the molecule rotates towards that direction. In other words, it rotates about an axis, which is perpendicular to the line joining the mouse position and the center of animation area. The angular speed of rotation

depends on the radial distance of the mouse cursor from the center. When the mouse is close to the center of the animation area, its speed of rotation is very slow and on moving the mouse away from the center, its rotation speed increases. When the mouse is far away from the center, its speed of rotation is high. When you position your mouse at the exact center location of the animation area, the molecule stops rotating. To pause animation, just click anywhere in the animation area. To resume animation, click once again anywhere in the animation area.

An Exercise for custom animation practice: Click "View Full Screen" button. The software displays the scaled-up 3D custom color animation of the selected compound in "Full Screen Mode", which occupies the entire screen of your computer. Refer the following figure for the naming convention used in this exercise.

3-D Molecule Animation Reference

Position the mouse pointer at Top Middle. The molecule starts rotating vertically with good speed. Move the mouse pointer towards Center slowly. The molecule continues to rotate vertically, but its speed of rotation reduces gradually. Now move the mouse pointer towards Bottom Middle. The molecule starts rotating in the opposite direction. It's speed of rotation increases gradually as the mouse pointer is moved away from Center. Now move the mouse pointer towards Center slowly. The molecule continues to rotate vertically, but its speed of rotation reduces gradually.

Position the mouse pointer at Middle Left. The molecule starts rotating horizontally with good speed.

Move the mouse pointer towards Center slowly. The molecule continues to rotate horizontally, but its speed of rotation reduces gradually. Now move the mouse pointer towards Middle Right. The molecule starts rotating in the opposite direction. It's speed of rotation increases gradually as the mouse pointer is moved away from Center. Now move the mouse pointer towards Center slowly. The molecule continues to rotate horizontally, but its speed of rotation reduces gradually.

Position the mouse pointer at Top Left. The molecule starts rotating at 45 angle with good speed. Move the mouse pointer towards Center slowly. The molecule continues to rotate about the same axis, but its speed of rotation reduces gradually. Now move the mouse pointer towards Bottom Right. The molecule starts rotating in the opposite direction about the same axis. It's speed of rotation increases gradually as the mouse pointer is moved away from Center. Now move the mouse pointer towards Center slowly. The molecule continues to rotate about the same axis, but its speed of rotation reduces gradually. Repeat the same exercise by moving the mouse pointer between Top Right and Bottom Left.

o

You may try to position the mouse pointer at the exact center of the animation area in an attempt to completely stop its rotation speed. You will be able to position the mouse pointer at the exact center after a few trials. Once you positioned it at the exact center, you will notice that the molecule stops rotating.

Just click at anywhere in the animation area at any time. The animation pauses at the current view position. Just click once again to resume animation.

What is NFPA 704 Fire Diamond ?
NFPA 704 is a standard maintained by the United States National Fire Protection Association. It defines the fire diamond used by emergency personnel to quickly and easily identify the risks posed by nearby hazardous materials. The hazard identification signal by NFPA is in the shape of a diamond with a color-coded array of four numbers or letters. Such diamond symbols are seen in gas cylinders, storage tanks, trailers, bottles of chemicals, and in various other places dealing with gases and chemicals. The colors in the squares depict the nature of hazard and the number indicates the level of hazard. "0" means no hazard of that nature and "4" means extremely hazardous.
