Publishing Editor Production Customer Service

Your Title Page, with all identifying Author, Affiliation and contact information, should be uploaded in the “File Upload” section of Manuscript Central under the category, "Title Page." This page will not be viewable to reviewers. Authors should then upload the BLINDED manuscript in the “File Upload” section of Manuscript Central. The BLINDED manuscript should include all required sections of the text, tables and legends

in one Word or Text document, and should be uploaded along with any separate figures. After your manuscript is submitted, the Editors will inspect the submission online before assigning reviewers. If any part of the manuscript is not complete, the manuscript will be unsubmitted, with an email notification sent to the author indicating the need for additional information and/or correction. Once a complete manuscript is correctly submitted, the CVIR editors will assign reviewers. The format of your manuscript should follow one of the manuscript formats outlined below.

Springer is pleased to offer CVIR authors the opportunity to have their submissions reviewed by an independent language editing service prior to submission. The following four contractors have been selected specifically for their English as a second language (ESL) capabilities and their years of experience with scientific manuscripts. Interested authors should contact any of the following contractors for manuscript assistance; authors are directly responsible for all payments to these contractors:

Diacritech Language Editing Services http://www.languageedit.com/

Write Science Right http://www.writescienceright.com/

Genedits http://www.genedits.com/

International Science Editing http://www.internationalscienceediting.com/

Only assigned reviewers will be able to view and print the uploaded, blinded electronic manuscript. This electronic review process offers a more prompt submission, review and decision process for all involved individuals.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS Authors will need the following in order to use Manuscript Central: - Netscape 4.x or MS Internet Explorer 4.x/5.x or higher - Adobe Acrobat browser plug-in - Electronic files of the article text. - Electronic files of the article figures/graphics (electronically created, scanned or exported)

AUTHOR ACCOUNTS Authors entering the journal's Manuscript Central site for the first time can create a new account and then follow the online prompts in order to submit a manuscript. If you have previously logged into the system, you should use your existing account for ALL subsequent submissions. If this procedure is followed and you use one primary account, then you will be able to track the status for all of your submitted manuscripts from the same page.

GETTING STARTED Once you have logged into your account, Manuscript Central will lead you through a step-by-step submission process. When submitting your manuscript on Manuscript Central, you will be required to enter data through several different screens. The requested information will include cover letter, title, abstract, author names and affiliations, and so forth. Support for special text characters is available. At any point during your submission process, Help buttons and a support link are available to view common questions, or ask specific questions via email. If you cannot finish your submission in one visit, you can save a draft and later re-enter the process at the same point for that manuscript by clicking on the “Partially Submitted Manuscripts” button in the Submission Center.

REQUIRED FORMS Copyright forms and color publication payment details are now handled online after an accepted article is prepared for proofing. When proofs are ready for viewing, the author is contacted via e-mail by the typesetter, and sent a website address that will provide the author with forms/orders/proofs procedures.

UPLOADING FILES TEXT AND TABLES: The electronic text file that you submit should contain text, tables and legends in one document, and should be uploaded as RTF. RTF (Rich Text Format) is a common export property of most popular word processors. Check your word processor to see if it can export or "Save As" your file in RTF format. MS Word and WordPerfect both contain this function. FIGURES AND GRAPHICS: Along with uploading the RTF for text, you can also upload separate figure and graphic documents. Common graphics files such as GIF, JPEG, EPS, TIFF and many others are supported. It is requested that very large figure files be compressed as much as possible before uploading figures to the website. After uploading the parts of the article in this manner, the system will convert the files to PDF. You will see the result of the conversion with the Acrobat plug-in in your browser. ALWAYS KEEP COPIES OF YOUR WORD-PROCESSING AND GRAPHICS FILES. You may want to revise the manuscript during the review process and you will need the original files if your manuscript requires revisions. At any point during your submission process, Help buttons and a support link are available to view common questions, or ask specific questions via email. After you submit your manuscript you will be notified by email that your submission was successful. Copyright Transfer Statement: As soon as your manuscript has been submitted online, the “Copyright Transfer Statement” must be printed out, signed and sent to the CVIR Editorial Office either as an online submitted document (submitted in the Cover Letter section), by fax, email, or mail. To download the form, please go to www.springer.com/270 and click on "Copyright Transfer Statement" Copyrights and other forms should either be uploaded online during manuscript submission, or sent to the following Editorial Office fax number, email and/or mailing address. If your manuscript is accepted, other hard copy items may also be requested later by the editors.

PERMISSIONS. If you use text passages, illustrations, or tables from other works, you must in each case obtain permission from the copyright holder for both the print and the online format. A written statement must accompany materials that are taken from other sources and included in the submitted manuscript. Please be informed that we will not be able to refund any costs that may have occurred in order to

receive these permissions from other publishers. Please be aware that some publishers do not grant electronic rights for free (an example is Thieme Publishers). In these cases we kindly ask you to use figures from other sources.

KEEPING TRACK After submission, you may return periodically and monitor the progress of your submission through the review process. Be sure to enter the same User Name and Password that you originally used to submit your manuscript.

REVIEW AND ACTION The editorial staff will examine the manuscripts for accuracy and completeness, and will customarily send a manuscript to two or three reviewers, depending on the manuscript type. Authors will be notified as to the acceptability of a manuscript as rapidly as possible.

SPECIAL CHARACTERS The Journal does not assume responsibility for errors in conversion of customized software, newly released software, and special characters. Please indicate if any special characters are used in the file (e.g., Greek, math symbols) by using a symbol code (e.g., ‹ga› for Greek alpha), and defining these codes at the end of your paper. ~~~~~~~ MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION Please type manuscripts (including references) double-spaced with one-inch wide margins. Number the pages consecutively and organize the manuscript in the order indicated below.

MANUSCRIPT FORMAT I Separate Title Page. This page should be submitted separately from the blinded text of the manuscript, in the "File Upload" section of Manuscript Central, under the category, "Title Page." This page will not be viewable to reviewers.

The Title Page should include:

The title of the article

The complete names and academic degrees for each contributing author (first name, middle initial[s], surname, degree[s]) The departmental and institutional affiliations with complete street or mailing addresses for each contributing author. Include the city, state or province, and country where the work was performed "Correspondence to" followed by the name and contact information for the corresponding author, and Corresponding fax and telephone numbers and e-mail address (required) A short title for use as a running head (not to exceed 30 characters in length, including spaces between words) Any grant information, and at the bottom of the title page, indicate any acknowledgment of grant support Acknowledgments. Individuals, other than authors, who were of direct help in the reported work should be acknowledged by a brief statement. Each acknowledged person should give their written consent to be named in the manuscript. This consent is to be sent to the Editorial Office by fax or mail

MANUSCRIPT TEXT FOR REVIEW should be organized into the following: ABSTRACT. Your abstract must not exceed 250 words. Include the manuscript title at the top of this page. The Abstract in full manuscripts should consist of four (4) structured paragraphs: Purpose, Materials and Methods, Results, and Conclusion. The Abstract for Case Reports and Brief Communications is a single paragraph. It must not exceed 125 words. Letters to the Editors do not require an Abstract. The Abstract should be fact-based, not descriptive or focused upon background information. It should not cite any references. Spell out each abbreviated term in full and follow with the abbreviation the first time a particular term is used; for example, “ultrasound (US).”

KEY WORDS. Up to six words providing index terms for the article. These should follow the abstract. For selection of appropriate key words, the "Index to Imaging Literature" published by the Radiological Society of North America may be consulted. TEXT. Organize the text into an Introduction section that conveys the background and purpose of the report, and then into sections titled "Materials and Methods," "Results" and "Discussion." When required by the nature of the report, manuscripts that do not follow this specific format may be accepted. Please include a statement in the Methods section indicating approval (or exemption) by your Institutional Review Board for the conduct of your research. Use a normal, plain font (e.g., 12-point Times Roman) for text

Double-space the text

Use italics for emphasis

Use the automatic page numbering function to number the pages Do not use field functions

Use tab stops or other commands for indents, not the space bar

Use the table function, not spreadsheets, to make tables

TABLES: All tables are to be numbered using Arabic numerals.

Tables should always be cited in text in consecutive numerical order.

For each table, please supply a table heading. The table title should explain clearly and concisely the components of the table. Identify any previously published material by giving the original source in the form of a reference at the end of the table heading. Footnotes to tables should be indicated by superscript lower-case letters (or asterisks for significance values and other statistical data) and included beneath the table body.

All tables should be supplied on a separate page at the end of the main document and have callouts

in the text.

FIGURES (ILLUSTRATIONS) All figures are to be numbered using Arabic numerals

Figure parts should be denoted by lowercase letters

Figures should always be cited in text in consecutive numerical order

For each figure, include the figure legends at the end of the manuscript text

Make sure to identify all elements found in the figure in the caption

Identify any previously published material by giving the original source in the form of a reference at the end of the caption For more information about preparing your illustrations, please follow the hyperlink to the artwork instructions below

Figures should be uploaded in the File Upload section of the Manuscript Central website, but separately from the text document. Figures should be restricted to the minimum necessary to clarify the work described. After uploading the parts of the article in this manner, the system will convert the files to PDF. You will see the result of the conversion with the Acrobat plug-in in your browser. Symbols, letters, and numbers should be of sufficient size to be clearly recognizable, if published. Photographs of patients in which the subject is identifiable must either have the face masked out, or be accompanied by written permission from the individual in the photograph for publication. REFERENCES. Please type references double-spaced and list them in consecutive, numerical order as they appear in the text (not alphabetically). Reference citations in the text should be identified by numbers in square brackets (e.g., [1]). Once a reference is cited, all subsequent citations should be to the original number. All references must be cited in the text or tables. Papers that have been accepted for publication or are in press may be listed in the References, but the Journal does not reference unpublished data and personal communications. Use the form for references adopted by the U.S. National Library of Medicine, as in Index Medicus. If several references are available on the same subject, cite only the most recent and pertinent, giving preference to original articles over review articles or textbooks.

In references to journal ARTICLES, please include (1) surname and initials (without periods) of first three authors and et al. for all others, (2) year in parentheses, (3) article title, (4) abbreviated journal name, (5) volume number, (6) inclusive page numbers, in that order.

An example follows: 1. Teichgräber UK, Gebauer B, Benter T, et al. (2003) Central Venous Access Catheters: Radiological Management of Complications. Cardiovasc Intervent Radiol 26(6): 321-333

In references to BOOKS, please include (1) surname and initials (without periods) of first three authors and et al. for all others, (2) year in parentheses, (3) chapter title, if any, (4) editor(s), if any, (5) title of book, (5) Publisher, (6) city of publication, and (8) inclusive page numbers. An example follows: 2. Holmes SAV, Christmas TJ, Rickards D (1993) Ureteric stents. In: Rickards D, Jones S, Thomson KR, Rifkin MD (eds) Practical Interventional Uroradiology. Edward Arnold. London, pp 53-65

ABBREVIATIONS, DRUG NAMES, DIGITS. Please use the standard abbreviations and units listed in Scientific Style and Format: The CBE Manual for Authors, Editors, and Publishers, Sixth Edition (Reston, Va., Council of Biology Editors, 1994). The first time an uncommon abbreviation appears in the text, it should be preceded by the full name for which it stands. Generic names for drugs and chemicals should be used the first time the drug or chemical is mentioned in the text and, preferably, thereafter. If an author wishes, the trade name may be inserted in parentheses following the generic name the first time the generic name appears, and the manufacturer name and city should also be included. Please express digits as numerals except when they are the first word in a sentence, and decimals should be written in North American format. Express units of measurement in the metric system whenever possible, and abbreviate them when used with numbers.

MANUSCRIPT FORMAT II Manuscripts submitted as review articles, case reports, technical notes, brief communications, letters to the editor and pictorial essays should be in accordance with the following conventions. Other invited submissions not mentioned here may also require certain formats, which would be clarified upon invitation.

REVIEW ARTICLES are usually invited submissions dealing with current topics in Interventional Radiology. However, submitted articles are considered and are subject to the same review process as original articles.

CASE REPORTS are limited to six typewritten pages (1800 words) and five illustrations. They should follow the style for original papers, but should only include a one-paragraph Abstract. The order of presentation is Abstract, Key words, Introduction, Case Report, and Discussion, followed by references, tables, and legends. Aim to limit the total number of references in Case Reports to a maximum of 10.

TECHNICAL NOTES are limited to six typewritten pages and three illustrations. They should follow the style for Manuscript Format I. In the Materials and Methods section, the emphasis should be on the exact description of the novel technique and the application to the experimental or clinical setting, even if there is only one case to be reported.

BRIEF COMMUNICATIONS are by and large works in progress that are of particular interest to the readership. They should not exceed four typewritten pages (1200 words) and two illustrations, and should only include a one-paragraph Abstract. They undergo limited review; however, they are not considered definitive publications of the material. The preliminary nature of the communication is to be stressed in the presentation. Aim to limit the total number of references in Case Reports to a maximum of 10.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR are unstructured communications, in letter format, with a limited number of typewritten pages, illustrations, and references. No Abstract is required. The editors reserve the right to accept, reject or excerpt letters without changing the views expressed by the author.

PICTORIAL ESSAYS are limited to ten pages and 15-20 illustrations.
ARTWORK INSTRUCTIONS

MULTIMEDIA ARTICLE & DYNAMIC MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION (I.E. STREAMING VIDEOS) Video is subject to Editorial review and approval. All multimedia submissions must be sent directly to the editorial office address listed above. Multimedia articles are papers where the heart of the article is the video and, generally, only an

abstract and references are included. Dynamic articles are regular articles with video(s) included as electronically supplementary material. Upon submission of multimedia or dynamic articles, the author(s) will be required to submit the video in the following format:

MULTIMEDIA ARTICLES All submissions must be in English

Long submission (10 minutes maximum) or short submission (approximately 3 minutes)

Abstract with bibliographic references (see MANUSCRIPT PREPARATIONS above. 3 copies and a CD is required saved as a Microsoft Word file format) Multimedia file for review and submission: MPEG-1 file with the largest frame size (usually 320 x 240 pixels) that will fit on a CD and will be playable on a Windows-based computer (3 copies)

DYNAMIC MANUSCRIPTS A dynamic manuscript is a print article with imbedded video material. Up to 3 (one minute maximum each) videos per manuscript submission will be accepted. Make sure to note in your manuscript the placement of the video clips. All standard instructions for manuscript and video submission should be followed for a dynamic manuscript submission ~~~~~~~~~~ ESM We invite contributing authors to publish additional, article-related materials on the web site that complement and reinforce information published in the print journal. If Electronic supplementary material (ESM) is submitted, it will be published as received from the author in the online version only. All standard instructions for manuscript and video submission should be followed. ESM may consist of

information that cannot be printed: animations, video clips, sound recordings

information that is more convenient in electronic form: sequences, spectral data, etc.

large original data, e.g. additional tables, illustrations, etc.

If supplying any ESM, the text must make specific mention of the material as a citation, similar to that of figures and tables (e.g., ". . . as shown in Animation 3.").

Upon submission of articles with video as Electronic Supplementary Material, the author(s) will be required to submit the video according to the following specifications: To accommodate user downloads, keep to the recommended upper limit for the size of the different file types. Larger-sized files may require very long download times, and some users may experience other problems during downloading. Video clips should not exceed 6 minutes or 60 MB. Anything exceeding 6 minutes must be submitted in two separate videos. Supply all supplementary material in standard file formats.

Always use MPEG-1 (.mpg) format.

Multimedia file for review and submission: Supply the MPEG-1 file with the largest frame size (usually 320 x 240 pixels) that will fit on a CD and will be playable on a Windows-based computer. The content of these files must be identical to that reviewed and accepted by the editor-in-chief.

All narration should be in English.

AFTER ACCEPTANCE Upon acceptance of your article you will receive a link to the special Springer web page with questions related to:

OFFPRINTS/ REPRINTS can be ordered. PUBLICATION OF COLOR FIGURES: Color figures may be used without charge for the electronic version of the journal that is published online via SpringerLink. However, color figures will appear in the print version of the Journal at the author's expense at $1,150 per article. OPEN CHOICE: In addition to the normal publication process (whereby an article is submitted to the journal and access to that article is granted to customers who have purchased a subscription), Springer now provides an alternative publishing option: Springer Open Choice. A Springer Open Choice article receives all the benefits of a regular subscription-based article, but in addition is made available publicly through Springer’s online platform SpringerLink. We regret that Springer Open Choice cannot be ordered for published articles. Please go to: http://springer.com/openchoice or click on the below link for more information
OPEN CHOICE

AUTHOR PROOFS After a submission is accepted and processed through production, a proof of the article is made available to the author. The purpose of the proof is to check for typesetting errors and the completeness and accuracy of the text, tables and figures. Substantial changes in content, e.g., new results, corrected values, title and authorship, are not allowed without the approval of the Editor. The article will be published online after receipt of the corrected proofs. This is the official first publication citable with the DOI. After release of the printed version, the paper can also be cited by issue and page numbers. After online publication, further changes can only be made in the form of an Erratum, which will be hyperlinked to the article.
