As you proceed into the forest you begin to see signs of the battle. After around twenty minutes you come upon a clearing where it looks like a patrol must have caught the Germans during their infiltration. Several bodies, all appearing to be American, litter the opening. You are beginning to near the coast as well, the smell of the sea ever increasing.

The vampire enters into the clearing from directly in front of you flanked by a ghoul. A second and third ghoul enters the clearing from to your left and right. The vampire holds a MG34 single handedly while the ghouls all have submachine guns. The vampire gives the ghouls a nod before letting out a loud scream. (Initiative)

The rain continues to pour as you stand at attention. The wind sings gently against the wet grass as the priest finishes his reading; “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” you hear him say. As he finishes, a group

of three men raise their rifles to the sky. The command of ready, aim, fire is given three times each time ending with a gunshot that echoes across the hills. A lone man standing behind the service begins to play taps on a bugle as a final salute is given to the fallen. As the service begins to break up, you see Whitaker motioning for you to follow. He leads you into the same projection room as earlier and judging from his face, you doubt he has slept in the last three days since the attack. When he speaks you notice a slight New York accent leak out through his cracking façade. “There is really no way to say what I have to say to you now…..*sigh*…. every member of Valor 4 died in that attack. They were preparing for the most important mission in military history; to strike at the diseased heart of the Third Reich’s power and rip it out. What this project promised to the American and British governments was miracles and that is the burden that I must now place upon your shoulders. There is no time for training or further preparation, you will be sent to France in a matter of days to complete 4’s mission. Your mission is called Operation Forlorn Hope; your objective is a Nazi base somewhere in Northern Germany called letzte dämmerung, or last dawn. Within this base is some sort of machine that funnels power from something called the Black Sun, whatever the hell this thing is, it gives the Thule Mages their powers. If we can destroy it, we can not only make real headway on land but maybe even regain air superiority. This gentlemen, is how we will win the war.”

“Once in France, the U.S. Army will launch an offensive upon German lines that should allow you to sneak through undetected. You will have to try and make contact with a French Resistance cell once you are behind enemy lines but at this point we can’t even confirm their existence. In 1944 when we launched the invasion of France many groups of resistance fighters rose up against the Nazis in open warfare but when we could not fully secure our victory, a good portion of the groups were destroyed. The few that were not would see battle in Paris and take even higher casualties. We know they existed three years ago and if you can find them, they will be able to lead you at least part of the way. This brings me to my next subject: Alexander Collins.” Whitaker moves to the back of the room and shuts the door. “What I am about to tell to you is known by a very select few, the majority of which now lie dead. The reason we know anything about the resistance group or the Black Sun goes back to the very formation of the VALOR project. Back in 1942, when we still thought we could win this thing, a special team was formed to go behind German lines in the hours leading up to the second battle at El Alamein and sow as much destruction and confusion as possible. Though none of them made it out alive their actions were more successful than could have ever been imagined and so the VALOR project was born. By 1944 another team had been selected and trained, this time for the invasion of France.” Whitaker’s eyes begin to trail off into a nonexistent horizon. “There were six of us in VALOR 2, me and Elliot included. It was our job to land on Omaha Beach and carry the day for the Allies, what none of us could have expected was just how deep the Nazis had dug in their lust for victory. Though we fought and won victory against an unimaginable foe, it was not good enough for the powers that be. What they wanted was the homerun, the knockout punch and instead we gave them just good enough. With a simple signature on a piece of paper the VALOR program was put to death. Shortly after the invasion, kinetics were discovered and not too long after, the CHARON project was born. What those in power wanted was the weapon to end all weapons and

CHARON delivered that in the form of Alexander Collins. You are of course aware of the three levels of kinetic. Type 1 Battle, Type 2 Service, and Type 3 Invalid but the only way I could describe Alexander to you would be Type 0…demigod. I witnessed his power only once at a demonstration stateside; he walked calmly onto a field, picked up a tank with a flick of his wrist , crushed it into a ball by making a fist, and he then proceeded to blow up another by looking at it from over half a mile away. He was released against the enemy only once, in the last days of the siege of Paris, they set him loose against a heavily defended bunker system. An hour later he emerged and when soldiers went in to investigate they didn’t find a single body because it appeared that every single room had been painted from floor to ceiling with their blood. His last mission occurred in early 1945 when he was sent behind enemy lines to meet up with a resistance group and discover the secret behind the Nazis arcane power. His transmissions began normal enough: enemy movements, discovered strongpoints, and the like. Eventually they took on a stranger tone, ramblings about infinite power, some personal philosophy of his creation, and talk of a Black Sun. His last radio contact would be made in 1946 but by then the project had been deemed an even larger failure than VALOR. We were born again and given a chance to redeem ourselves. Elliot and I were given command and though it was somewhat rushed, we trained VALOR 3. Their mission was all too similar to that of 1’s except sand was replaced with snow. They were going to breach enemy lines in the Ardennes in preparation for an Allied offensive but what we all ended up blind to was that the Germans had planned an offensive of their own.

One day before the date of the mission, we entered into the Battle of the Bulge as tanks and infantry poured across our lines. Two days into the battle on a cold snowy night, Knight, Gallows, Turk, and Athena faced down a charge of over sixty werewolves and by all that is holy on this Earth they held the line. Despite their abilities, one by one they were killed: Turk first, then Gallows, and finally gods help those stupid bastards, Athena. Due to the sacrifices they had made, leaving their units, their families, we allowed them certain…liberties, you see. The day after their training finally ended, Knight and-no, James and Heather were married.”

Whitaker’s eyes fall to the ground. “I was there and I still don’t know if I saw James or the devil himself out there in that blood smeared field. When he saw her fall, something very vital must have broke within that man’s mind and in that moment he died with her. I was leading a general retreat of the unit but I looked back in time to watch as he faced down the last twenty of those monsters with nothing but his knife and pistol. The Battle of the Bulge would last for another three weeks and in that time, James and all the other members were assumed dead. A day after the stalemate was reached; he wandered out of a blizzard and back into camp, holding most of his guts in with one hand, the other still clutching a twisted and broken knife. I sent out three patrols and they discovered the body of both Gallows and Turk but Heather’s was never found. I never asked what happened to her body or how he lived and I would have to suggest you do the same seeing as how he will be joining you on this mission. His experience will prove invaluable and though I doubt he has taken a psych evaluation since he was first selected, we have little choice in the matter.

So, you will enter enemy lines and find this group. They should at least give you a lead to Alexander’s location or they may even know the location of the base themselves. If you can find him, command wants you to do everything you can to bring him back alive. I have my doubts about that possibility; if he is not dead in a ditch I expect that he is raving madman by now. Not sure what they expected would happen when you give such power to a man but they certainly got it.

The transport ship lumbers through the night, all of its lights dark in case of enemy patrols. You are in a makeshift cabin in the cargo deck, away from the rest of the crew.
