LOCATION
Malaysia
Commonly dubbed the gateway to Asia, Malaysia, is
geographically centred in the heart of South East
Asia, strategically placing the country in an unrivalled
location for international travel because of its easy
accessibility by air, land and sea.
Malaysia comprises of Peninsular and East Malaysia,
two areas of mainland separated by the South China
Sea. Whilst Peninsular Malaysia is better known for
its urban cosmopolitan cities and technological
advancements, East Malaysia, is world-renowned for
its lush rainforest and pristine islands; a perfect
tourist getaway.
From the majestic mountain tops of Mt. Kinabalu in
Sabah, to the cavernous sights of the Mulu caves in
Sarawak, to the immaculate beaches of Langkawi,
discovering Malaysia's unique and natural wonders
is now possible on a student budget with the numerous
budget airlines available making air travel more
affordable.
Malaysia, located along the equator line, is a fascinating nation that
enjoys tropical warm weather all-year through.
Penang
Living in Penang is one of the benefits of studying at
the University Sains Malaysia. Steeped in rich colonial
history, Penang is located in the north-western region
of Peninsular Malaysia. Commonly referred to as the
Pearl of the Orient for its natural geographic location
for a port, Penang is divided into two sections, Penang
Island and Province Seberang Perai, which borders
the state of Kedah.

Kuala Lumpur
Penang Island is easily accessible by air, with daily
flights to and from major capital cities in Malaysia
to Bayan Lepas International Airport. Penang Island
is merely 45 minutes by air from Kuala Lumpur
International Airport, the main access point into
Malaysia. Penang Island can also be reached by road
via the Penang Bridge. For those who truly wish to
experience Penang to its fullest, a ferry ride between
the mainland and the island is a must.
ii
Ingeniously fusing modernization with history, town
planners have meticulously preserved Penang Island's
colonial legacy through the years. The remains of
these historical sites are still evident and visible
through the prewar architectures mostly spread
alongside the streets of George Town, the capital
city of Penang, a charmingly quaint city full of
character. UNESCO has recognised Penang Island as
a Heritage City solely for the preservation of these
legacies of the past.

INSTITUTE OF POSTGRADUATE STUDIES
Postgraduate Studies
Postgraduate education and research in Universiti
Sains Malaysia is distinguished by the close working
relationships graduate students share with their
professors. With an emphasis on close interaction
and mentoring, you can be assured of a stimulating
intellectual environment conducive for learning and
research at the highest level.
Modes of Studies
The University offers three modes of study for the
graduate programmes, that is, by research, by mixed
mode (a combination of coursework and research),
and by coursework.
Fast Track to PhD for First Class Students
Students who display an overall excellent academic
aptitude despite only possessing an undergraduate
degree may be accepted into the Doctoral Programme
at the discretion of the USM Senate. This privilege
is offered to students with a First Class honours in
their bachelor's degree.
Established in 1991, the Institute of Postgraduate Studies (IPS) is the
University's main centre handling all matters pertaining to the postgraduate
studies. Endorsed by the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education, the
University practices a strong emphasis on quality, diversity, access, and
equity. The IPS is responsible for increasing the number of postgraduate
students and ensuring the quality of postgraduate education. Acting as a
one-stop centre for postgraduates' education-related needs, the IPS serves
to administer all facets of postgraduate work from the intake of students,
monitoring their progress as well as the evaluation of theses and examinations.
xii
Alternative Route for Award of PhD
The Senate of Universiti Sains Malaysia approved
the submission of the Thesis and Publication Route
for the award of a PhD, in June 2009. Hence two
submission routes are now available to PhD
candidates: the traditional PhD thesis route, and the
thesis and publication route.
The purpose of introducing this alternative route is
to make it possible for students to select a method
of submission for PhD that is most appropriate with
their discipline and accomplishments.
The key issue for the award of the PhD regardless
of the route is the quality of the research and that
the documentation represents an acceptable
contribution to the field and that the methodology is
appropriate. The final document should reflect a
submission as an integrated whole.
xiii
Study Opportunities for Senior Citizens
With the understanding that education is a continuous
process, USM offers opportunities for individuals of
every age group the opportunity to gain knowledge
in order that they can realize their dreams of obtaining
a postgraduate education. Under this scheme, local
students will be charged half of local students' normal
tuition fees, while international students will have
to pay the full tuition fees charged for local students.
Group with Special Abilities
Living with special abilities should not hinder anyone
from obtaining higher education. Implementing
measures aimed at equalizing opportunities for all
students, the University practices an inclusive learning
environment with its extensive range of services for
students with special abilities. The University seeks
to help students with special abilities achieve academic
excellence; develop their skills and confidence while
at the same time experiencing a wholesome academic
and social life that the University can offer. Tuition
fees for this group of students will be the same as
that of the senior citizens mentioned previously.
Admissions
Applying for either a postgraduate degree at the
Master's level or Doctorate level requires the applicant
to hold an undergraduate degree from an accredited
university recognised by the USM Senate. The
applicant must also possess qualifications accepted
by the USM Senate and must be of good academic
standing.

walking and strolling the Gurney Drive, and partying
on Saturday nights at various hotspots such as
Slippery Senoritas and the newly-opened Hard Rock
Café up along Ferringhi Beach, student life in Penang
would simply be a memorable one!
Local cuisine such as the daily taste of roti canai
(flat, grilled bread with some curry), a sizable meal
of fried char kuey teow (flat, thin noodles fried) and
a plate of hearty nasi kandar (rice with curried meat,
usually chicken) meal is considered quite cheap, yet
filling. Available in George Town, Penang's capital
city, are special-themed restaurants ranging from
North Indian cuisine, Thai cuisine, Italian cuisine, and
Middle-east delights. These restaurants may charge
higher compared to the normal street foods Penang
is famous for, but they provide a great deal of variety
and options to soothe your cravings for international
cuisines.
In the Health Campus, Kelantan, life is more quiet
and serene. The Kelantanese are more friendly and
conservative. This is naturally expected in Kelantan
for the state's population is dominated by the Malays.
Kota Bharu is an excellent city to visit during the hot
months of the year, because during November till
January, the north-east monsoon brings a lot of down
pour to this eastern state of Malaysia. It is a city
where you can have a taste of the variety of local
traditional cuisine such as, nasi dagang, nasi belauk,
and nasi kerabu, which are seldom found in other
places in the west coast. Also, Kelantan is well-
known as the "house" of traditional Malay cakes.
You can have a taste all of these traditional Malay
cakes without having to spend much money.
Living in Penang would definitely enrich a student's
life experiences. One should definitely take the
opportunity to travel as it is one of the best things
to do while in Penang! Equipped with an international
airport facility, you may fly to various faraway
attractions such as Indonesia, India, Hong Kong,
Macau, Singapore, and Thailand. Closer to Penang,
you might also want to cover nearby attractions such

rail, or a two and a half hour's flight to East Malaysia,
the states of Sabah and Sarawak. Do bear in mind
to also set aside an allocation for education-related
programmes/trips abroad and within the country.
Living in Kelantan would be comfortable even with
a small budget. Rent is not as expensive as in the
West Coast. The popular beach of Pantai Cahaya
Bulan is within an hour's drive from the Kubang Kerian
Campus. In the weekends, students and their families
can visit the border town of Rantau Panjang which
is about one and half hour's drive away. Many of the
locals come here to do their shopping. By air, Kelantan
is accessible via the Sultan Ismail Petra Airport
situated about half an hour's drive from the Health
Campus. The following list gives some of the places
of attraction in Kelantan: Batik/Songket Center, Siti
Khatijah Central market, Night Market, Mohd Salleh
& Sons Silver Crafts, the State Museum, Rantau
Panjang Duty Free Zone, and Sultan Ismail Petra
Arch.
Outreach Programme
In line with the University's vision, "Higher Education
for a Better Tomorrow," the Outreach Programme is
geared towards sustainable development. Engaging
in this commitment to bettering society through
research, the program enables students and staff to
get a first hand glimpse of the issues that need to
be dealt with.
xxv
Homestay
Participating in Homestay programmes would be an
excellent opportunity to become better acquainted
with the local culture. This serves as a mutual cultural
exchange between the international student and the
local host family. Not only does this option give
students the extra level of support upon first arriving
in a country foreign to them, it also enables
International Students to practise their English in a
very natural and relaxed environment. Most
international students and host families develop very
strong bonds that last throughout their lifetime.
