AQHA Officials Visit Prairie Meadows
Early in April, three executives from the American Quarter Horse Association visited Prairie Meadows on a “site visit” in advance of 2012 Challenge Championship Night on October 27. The AQHA delegation included Executive Director of Racing Trey Buck, Senior Manager of Racing And Association Marketing Matt Darby, and Director of Event Management Kellye Baker. Representatives of Prairie Meadows Racetrack & Casino included Director of Marketing Jeff Nelson, Horsemen’s Liaison Chuck Schott, and QH Racing Secretary Chad Keller. The Iowa Quarter Horse Racing Association was represented by president Tom Lepic, past president Butch Hammer, and board member Brenda Onstot. According to Jeff Nelson, “There was a lot of positive energy during the site visit.” He added, “The AQHA was impressed with the new hotel and is very excited to be able to have all of the week’s events hosted at a single location. There is definitely some shared excitement about the Challenge Championships at Prairie Meadows.” And the AQHA’s Darby concurred, “All in all, I was encouraged by everything I saw. This will be the first time we’ve held the Challenge Championships and the AQHA Racing Conference at a hotel/track combo. It’s going to make things so much easier.”

Championship Challenge Update
As of April 15, only 3 regional challenge races have taken place, including 2 races at Sunland Park in New Mexico. In Brazil, Dash Glory Ease became the first horse to qualify for the Bank Of America Challenge Championship. The 4YO Brazilian homebred will be pointed toward running at Prairie Meadows and is scheduled to be under the care of leading California trainer Paul Jones. At Sunland Park on April 1, JW A Royal Flirt pulled off an upset in the Red Cell Distance Challenge regional. His owners, George and Judy Weldon of Utah, also plan to point their horse toward running in the 870-yard race at Prairie Meadows. And most recently, on April 8 at Sunland Park, the highly accomplished veteran Rylees Boy, owned by Gerardo OchoaPena, stamped his 4th consecutive ticket to the Challenge Championship main event by winning his 3rd straight Sunland Park Championship Challenge regional.

President’s Message
Tom Lepic, IQHRA President
I want to thank everyone who has helped with this year’s IQHRA Stallion Service Auction. To date, we have sold over $80,000 in breedings and we are still actively marketing the remaining stallions. If you need a breeding for 2012 please check the IQHRA website for the list of remaining stallions. We are currently working on an IQHRA “New Owner’s Guide” which will soon be posted on our website. This guide will supply all of the information regarding the state regulatory policies for Iowa-bred Quarter Horses, racing industry links, licensing information, foaling locations in Iowa, stallions standing in Iowa, national (AQHA) and state (IQHRA) contact information, Prairie Meadows condition book, and other important information about owning, racing, and breeding. A big thank you to Jill Paxton (Department of Agriculture) for making this possible! Our Board is currently working hard to make 2012 a tremendous year for our owners, trainers, and members. A list of this year’s special events is included in this newsletter. Please take time to look over the events and dates and join us whenever possible. Thank you to the IQHRA Board for their continued hard work. We are just four months away from the start of our 2012 season. Make sure you mark Saturday August 18th on your calendar. Our 2012 meet is over a 10 week period and will include 9 races per night. This is a total of 234 racing opportunities for our Quarter Horses, which is the most ever at Prairie Meadows! Yes, it is an exciting time to be an Owner/Breeder/Trainer in the State of Iowa!

What’s New?
John Hernandez, Executive Secretary
As this issue of The Quarter Horse Wire goes to press, we are now just a little more than six months away from the biggest weekend in Iowa Quarter Horse racing history … the last weekend of October in which our home track Prairie Meadows will host the 2012 Bank of America Challenge Championships on Saturday October 27. Between now and then, owners and trainers all over the Unites States will be attempting to qualify their runners for the six championship races: the $75,000 Pfizer Starter Allowance Challenge Championship, the $125,000 Red Cell Distance Challenge Championship (G1), the $125,000 Merial Distaff Challenge Championship (G1), the $150,000 John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship (G2), the $200,000 Adequan Derby Challenge Championship (G1), and the $350,000 Bank of America Racing Challenge Championship (G1). We have included the schedule of the regional challenge races, which includes locations, trial dates, final dates, and payment information for the various regional qualifying races around the country. For those of you hoping to see one of your horses run on championship night, please note that by the time we finish hosting our regionals at Prairie Meadows in mid-September, there will be only a few opportunities to qualify for five of the races and only one opportunity – at Turf Paradise– to qualify a runner for the BofA Racing Challenge Championship. Also note that the April newsletter includes the Prairie Meadows / IQHRA “calendar of events” through the end of October. April, May, June, and July are light as far as QH events go, but the pace picks up in August as we draw close to opening night of the 2012 season. On August 4, the IQHRA will participate in the annual Iowa Classic Parade for the second time. We encourage all members to get involved and join us on the IQHRA float. And take some time to review the 2012 Prairie Meadows / IQHRA Youth Days information and application. If you know of potential candidates for this wonderful opportunity to get “up close and personal” with our sport, please encourage them to fill out the application, write an essay, and submit them to Brenda Onstot well before the July 1 deadline.

IQHRA BOARD MEETING MINUTES FEBRUARY 12, 2012
Board members absent: John Lawless, Bob Brown, Terry Thorson, and Ken Denning. Meeting was called to order by President Tom Lepic APPROVAL OF JANUARY MINUTES: The minutes of the January Annual meeting were reviewed. Motion for board approval of minutes made by Butch Bain and seconded by Leonard Reed. Motion carried. The minutes will be reviewed by the membership at the 2013 Annual meeting for final approval. APPROVAL OF TREASURER’S REPORT: A corrected treasurer’s report was distributed to the board by Troi Mulford. After review, motion made by Don Rayner to approve corrected report and seconded by Brenda Onstot. Motion carried. Troi explained to the board that the 2010-2012 audit has not been done because she is getting bids from other firms. She and Butch Bain know a certified public account that might be able to do the audit less expensively. She will report back at the March meeting what the bids were and her recommendation on which firm we would use. Troi reported that the estimated cost of our year-end awards has increased. Jim Harvey, awards chairman, will look into the increase and report back to the board before any awards are purchased. LOBBYIST: Sandra reported that the legislature is in session. She distributed a letter to the board from the lobbyists we gave donations to thanking IQHRA for supporting them. The “dog bill” to discontinue dog racing in the State is still in committee. Sandra is monitoring this to make sure there is no reference to horse racing. The bill regarding internet poker is progressing. Sandra is also monitoring that and will report if there are any amendments we need to be aware of. PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Tom congratulated Butch Hammer on his recent election as President of the IQHA. Butch expressed the continued support between the two organizations and his willingness to help us with our Challenge races. TVG has been selected to operate the account deposit wagering for Prairie Meadows for the next 5 years. This agreement will potentially increase simulcasting for Prairie Meadows racing. The April board of directors meeting has been moved from Riverside Casino in Iowa City to April 15th at Prairie Meadows. OLD BUSINESS: FALL SALE: The Fall Sale will be Saturday, September 8th at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. Terry Thorson will report further at the next meeting. Sale futurity nomination forms have been mailed. The first payment is March. YOUTH DAYS: Brenda announced that the dates September 21 and 22 have been approved by Prairie Meadows. Applications are on the website and will be distributed at Horse Fair. Brenda also has forms available for interested youth. Our last years’ representative, Fenton Nelson spoke to the board describing his experiences both at Prairie Meadows and at National Youth Days in Indiana. He highly recommended the program for future participants.

STALLION SERVICE AUCTION: The auction is going well. We are still selling a number of stud services . The auction continues through May. We are placing ads in Speedhorse and TRACK magazines through April advertising the remaining stallions. The current list of unsold stallions is also on our website. An error in a farm fee was noted. Motion by Don Rayner and seconded by Butch Bain to pay $600 farm fee to 6666 Ranch. Motion carried. CHALLENGE CHAMPIONSHIP: Tom reported that there is a lot of excitement for the races at Prairie Meadows. He attended the Heritage Place sale and distributed lots of pens, playing cards, and brochures advertising the Challenge races. The IRGC was very pleased about the income generated for the Des Moines area by hosting the races here. AQHA has blocked rooms not only Prairie Meadows hotel but other local hotels in anticipation of a large turnout. PICNIC: The picnic is slated for Sunday September 2nd. Due to the 1 p.m. race time there will be a brunch instead of a picnic. On Labor Day there is no live racing but IQHRA encourages members, guests, and trainers to come to the All American party at the Prairie Meadows pavilion, watch the Ruidoso races and enjoy appetizers. NEW BUSINESS: STAKES INFORMATION AND PAYMENTS: The Future of Iowa and Terrace Hill stakes payment structure was discussed. Motion to have each race at $900 total payment with $400 to nominate and $500 to enter made by Jim Harvey and seconded by Butch Bain. Motion carried. The current list of nomination forms are on the Prairie Meadows website. The board discussed and decided that the stakes nomination forms also need to be on our website. HORSE FAIR: Horse Fair is scheduled for March 30th –April 1st. We will again share a booth with the IQHA. Chris passed out sign up sheets for officers and directors to sign up to be at our booth. Those who help will be reimbursed for their admission fee. MEMBERSHIP: Shirley reported that we have 14 lifetime members and 51 paid 2012 memberships. Membership applications will be sent to past members encouraging them to renew their memberships. The committee will also get a list of trainers who raced at Prairie Meadows and send an application to them. BOARD CONTACT INFORMATION: Chris passed out a current contact list from our website. Officers and board members were asked to look over the sheets and make any corrections to their information. This will be given to John Hernandez to put on the website. BY-LAWS REVIEW: Committee set up to review and recommend changes to the current by-laws. Committee members are Butch Bain, Mark Guy, Shirley Peiffer, Leonard Reed, and Jim Harvey. COMMITTEES: Tom is reviewing the current list of standing committees and a possible revision in the format and number of committees. He will discuss with the board at the March meeting. NEW BUSINESS COMMENTS: Mark Guy and Bob Urich will meet with a representative of the Thoroughbred groups and see how the Department of Agriculture changed the allocation of “breeders money” for their organization and if this change is pertinent to our group. They will report at the March meeting.

Motion to adjourn made by Don Rayner and seconded by Brenda Onstot. Meeting adjourned. Chris Hovey, Secretary
