Some plants and herbs have the potential to naturally repel mosquitoes. Care should be taken when handling some of these plants as some people have a sensitivity to them.  Pelargonium Citrosa (citrus geranium): can be grown in gardens or pots. They offer localised protection against mosquitoes by releasing a citronella scent. They are ideal for outdoor areas around your home including BBQ areas, verandahs and patios.  Pennyroyal, Marigold, Basil and Rue: should be planted in pots and located near doorways and windows, to deter mosquitoes from entering the house. STOP BEING STUPID  It is a timely reminder from NSW Police to quell drunken behaviour in our streets, especially after Friday night’s rampage of senseless vandalism of upending pot plants outside the National Australia Bank and Canowindra Newsagency, and the uprooting of plants in Memorial Park.

Inspector Anthony McLean of Cowra Police Station advises, “Report all crime so that we can ensure staff are allocated where and when necessary. Call the police station directly if you need police to attend, or Triple Zero 000 if it is an emergency. The Police Assistance Line should only be used to report incidents

Police are warning responsibly and avoid the public the dangers to behave of alcohol-related behaviour during this weekend’s latest Operation Unite blitz against drunken violence being conducted on Friday and Saturday 17 & 18 December. Across NSW scores of additional police will be on the lookout for unlawful and reckless behaviour.

where police attendance is not required.” It is up to us, the community, to take responsibility for reporting intolerable antisocial behaviour. If we focus on stamping out vandalism, violence and public drunkenness, we will have a more visible and regular police presence in our town to prevent incidents occurring.

To the editor... An age of "Thatcherism" is slowly appearing as evidenced in Britain with the protests over increases in student fees and other basic cuts. How long for Australia to follow suit? In the past Australia "followed the leader" in this regard, of making cuts, especially after 1994 when British rail was privatised and NSW then corporatised rail (1996). This action, taken by NSW has justified the shut down and destruction of many important railway lines in rural, regional and remote areas of the State. In 1998 the Commonwealth did much the same through the corporatisation/ privatisation of interstate track. NSW is now paying the penalty of this 1996 decision which is exacerbated by the following Commonwealth action. Water sodden roads (foundations/ subsoil) are being pounded to pieces by excessive road use, a direct result of the absence of access to railway lines by producers and consumers, because they are closed. Yours sincerely, Bill Barwood, Canowindra PS The person or persons who objected so strongly to the road closed sign placed in Icely Street should complain to Cabonne Council instead of throwing the parts into adjoining paddocks thus allowing damage to occur to agric agricultural ultural machinery.

SPORT

SWIMMING CLUB R EPORT EPORT  At swimming Club this week the relay went off without a hitch as 5 teams of 9 swam their competitive hearts out and lane 2 won. The winning pennants were collected by Claire Wright, Nick Jeffrey, Abbey Slattery, Josh Middleton, Harry Jeffrey, Joe Coady, Brooke Kinsela, Erica Blanch, and Kye Reid. Also handed out this week were 5 swimming caps and these went to the five biggest improvers for the night: Jamie Austin [26 seconds in the 33m breaststroke, Amelia Holmes [16 seconds in the 100m freestyle], Ella Andrews [12 seconds 33m breaststroke], Jessica Bennett [11 seconds 33m breaststroke], and Sophie Tremain [100m freestyle]. The cap was a replacement of sorts for Jamie Austin who dropped his time by 5 seconds in the 33m freestyle, or Spoon, 2 seconds in the heat and 3 seconds in the Final. Unfortunately this was 1 second too fast so the spoon went to a fast finishing Eloise Beath who knocked a second from her time and took out the spoon in a PB of 29 seconds. Other superfish from Friday in the 33m butterfly were Jen Holmes, 8 seconds, Wade Kinsela, 7 seconds, and Angus Fisher, 6 seconds. Zac Giger improved his 33m freestyle by 5 seconds in the heat and as such swam himself out of a semi final spot, oh well there is always this week to try and win that elusive spoon. This week will be the last swimming club of the year, and we will recommence on Friday 7 January 2011. So sign up this week and remember to sign by Wednesday evening and be ready for roll call and relay nomination at 5:45pm on Friday.

CRICKET BLATHER   As all cricket has been washed out for the past two Saturdays this may be something to consider. If the Australians do not do any better in the Ashes in Perth this week maybe the Australian selectors need to start thinking outside the square for inspiration. I’m sure Matt Devlin wouldn’t hesitate to leave his rain-battered-flood damaged crops and fences to impart his coaching wisdom to the Australian XI. Blake Willson or the Billimari red-head, Conor Lamond, would love to get their chance to tell the Australian fielders exactly where to go. Nick and Peter Guthrie could give all the Aussie batsmen lessons in playing straight and keeping those Pommie bowlers at bay. Hopefully we will get a sunny Saturday this week so our local heroes can practice for their Aussie call up!
