Sports: Trust Canowi ndra has
managed the running of the Sports
Complex since 1982, with many local
community members working tirelessly
during this time. The Sports Trust con-
sists of 14 affiliated bodies (sporting
clubs & schools), & from these organi-
sations, an executive and board are
elected to run the Trust voluntarily.
The affiliated bodies pay a fee for
use of the grounds, with this money
being spent on improvements to the
oval.
The Annual General Meeting of the
Canowindra Sports Trust will be held
on Monday 9 May 7pm at the
Canowindra Health Centre. All affili-
ated bodies are encouraged to send
2 delegates along and community
members are welcome to attend to
help maintain this important facility
for our community.
Thanks: to Newcrest Mining who have
generously donated $1,500 to our
High School for enhanced literacy
achievement. The money will be used
to purchase iPads and other resources
to develop literacy programs. Many
thanks also to Mrs Meredith Healey
who composed the submission and led
the development of the initiative.
Kudos: to Dr Kumar and John Giger
for taking the time and effort to im-
prove the streetscape of Gaskill
Street. Dr Kumar was quick off the
mark after a letter to the editor gave
some feedback on the state of the
footpath and installed some bird net-
ting underneath the balcony on the
corner of Gaskill & Blatchford Streets.
John Giger's beautiful historic building
on the corner of Gaskill & Ryall is be-
ing given a much needed facelift.
Thanks to you both, and your helpers.
Python: membership forms can be
pi cked up from Canowi ndra
Newsagency and submitted with pay-
ment of $25 single or $50 for a
family. Support the snakes, it's going
to be a cracker of a year!
Help: This year the Salvation Army
Red Shield Appeal Doorknock will
take place over the weekend of
28-29 May. If you wish to volunteer,
please contact the volunteer hotline
13 SALVOS (13 72 58) and a
co-ordinator will be in touch.
CABONNE DRAFT BUDGET
Record spending on roads is the high-
light of Cabonne Council’s draft Budget
for 2011/12. The Council will spend
almost $12.2m on roads projects during
the next year, including $1.5m on the
construction of new bridges.
Cabonne Mayor Bob Dowling said a call
for better roads was the loudest message
from a recent series of consultation
meetings held with local communities
and he was delighted that Council had
been able to increase its expenditure in
this area.
“This allocation of $12.192m is an
increase of more than 20 per cent on last
year,” Cr Dowling said.
However, the Mayor said the record
expenditure would not allow the Council
to undertake all the roadworks projects
that it wished.
“There is an Australia-wide funding gap
for the local roads network and Councils
throughout the nation are struggling to
maintain these roads to the standards
that their ratepayers are demanding,” he
said
“When you consider that Cabonne
Council has more than 2,100 kilometres
of roads to maintain you begin to under-
stand the mammoth task that confronts
it. But with almost 1,300km of that net-
work being gravel roads, the challenge to
provide a balanced roadworks program is
enormous. The replacement cost of
Cabonne’s roads is more than $182m and
that doesn’t include bridges.
“Governments of all types are being
forced to make cutbacks to balance their
books and that why I am proud that
Cabonne Council has been able to
increase its road funding in this Budget.”
Other highlights of this Management Plan
include $6.4m for the completion of the
Four Towns Sewerage Scheme for
Manildra, Cumnock and Yeoval; $1.9m for
the remediation of the Molong gasworks;
$1.4m for waste management upgrades;
$500,000 for design investigation for
potable water for Cumnock and Yeoval;
$471,000 for the Eugowra and Molong
Floodplain projects; and $400,000 for
Village Enhancement Programs.
But the Mayor said that one item close to
his heart is an additional $67,000 for
Cabonne’s 11 cemeteries.
“I fully agree with residents’ requests for
more to be spent on cemetery
maintenance, especially during peak
seasonal periods,” Cr Dowling said.
The Council voted to increase its general
rate by 2.8 per cent in accordance with
the State Government’s rate pegging
limit. The draft Budget and Management
Plan will be placed on exhibition for the
next 28 days, during which residents and
ratepayers are invited to make comments
and suggestions.
At the end of that period the Council will
consider any changes before formally
adopting its Management Plan.

THE ADULT SURVIVORS OF CHILD ABUSE
Is a group that meets every month on the first Friday of each month. Each meeting is held
in a safe environment in Cowra. Professional counselling staff will be available if needed –
in a separate room, in all privacy.
Each meeting is structured as follows: a welcome to new members, an update on items
discussed at the previous meeting, an update on upcoming workshops and events
focusing on healing, followed by sharing of resources and discussions on healing
strategies. Informal chats, and tea/coffee breaks occurring at times of your choice whilst
respecting the group.
If you are interested to join, it is better for you and for the smooth and safe running of
the group meetings that you fully understand the group’s objectives and be introduced to
some group members prior to attending for the first time. Contact Pascale on 6342 1612,
have a chat, and assess whether this group is what you are looking for.

From the amount contributed to the
Community Chest program last year,
Johnny Lawrence was able to present
$5,000 each to the Age of Fishes Museum
and Canowindra Preschool Kindergarten.
Lawrence's IGA support all community
organisations and sporting groups in
Canowindra and area including the Lions
Club, Golf Club, Bowling Club, Little
Athletics, Squash Club, both football
codes & the inaugural Central West Team
Penning event held earlier this year.
Another facet of supporting the
community is the Saturday morning
Raffle Roster where community groups
reserve the high traffic area on the foot-
path in front of the supermarket. There is
a public notice board just inside the
doors, where every week there are
various for sale, garage sale and events
on display. This is a free service and that
is required is that the notice is dated with
when it was put up.

DON’T DRIVE TO HOSPITAL
Remember in a medical emergency, dial
Triple Zero (000) and ask for Ambulance.
Don’t drive yourself or the patient to hos-
pital as you may endanger your life, the
patient’s life or members of the public.
It is important, that in medical emergen-
cies, members of the community don’t
panic and try to drive themselves or the
patient to hospital.
Ambulances are equipped with lifesaving
equipment and drugs. The Ambulance
calltaker will tell you what to do and will
provide medical instructions until para-
medics arrive.
Paramedics are highly trained profession-
als who are able to provide advanced
medical treatment to those who are sick
or injured.
Every minute counts. By being able to
deliver essential life-saving treatment at
the scene, as well as en-route to hospital,
ambulance paramedics can start deliver-
ing treatment much earlier than if a per-
son tries to get to the hospital by other
means.
Time is not the only factor that should be
considered. You can do more for the pa-
tient by staying calm, reassuring them,
keeping their airway open and stop life
threatening bleeding.
Especially in the rural setting, follow
these important steps:
Call Triple Zero (000) and do not hang
up the phone. The call-taker needs to
gather important information to help
the paramedics
Learn First Aid – these vital skills may
help you save the life of a friend or
relative
Keep a First Aid kit in your house and in
your car
Teach your children how to call Triple
Zero (000)
Help us to locate you - if possible,
when you call for an Ambulance, have
someone wait outside your address to
guide the Ambulance to the correct
location.

Please find above a photograph of
the work done by Cabonne Council at
Morris Park.
A recent meeting of Canowindra
Driver Reviver Committee decided to
approach Council with a view to
having the drainage problems at the
Driver Reviver Site at the Park
corrected.
Access to the park by visitors was
hindered by drainage problems
created during the November/
December 2010 heavy rain events.
Council in time for the Easter/ANZAC
week-end installed extended gutter-
ing and filled in large "holes" in the
parking area, which is greatly
appreciated by all.
Yours sincerely

Moussaka

3 large eggplants
sea salt
olive oil
2 medium onions, chopped
500g minced beef or lamb
1 can tomatoes
2 cloves of garlic, minced
4 whole cloves
¼ tsp of ground cinnamon
pinch ground allspice
1 bay leaf
½ cup of grated parmesan
½ cup of breadcrumbs
½ cup of dry red wine
2 tbsp of tomato paste
freshly ground pepper
3 cups of basic béchamel sauce

Cover 1cm slices of eggplant with salt
for 30 minutes. Rinse well, pat dry &
brush with olive oil. Sauté onions in oil
until translucent. Add meat & sauté until
brown, add tomatoes, ½ breadcrumbs,
salt, pepper, garlic, cinnamon, bay leaf,
allspice, wine, and tomato paste & mix
well. Reduce heat, cover, simmer until
liquid has been absorbed & mixture is
dry, stirring to prevent sticking. Remove
bay leaf, set aside uncovered until ready
to use. Make the béchamel sauce,
cover, and set aside. Preheat the oven
to 180°C. Oil a baking dish, sprinkle with
remaining breadcrumbs. Place a layer
of eggplant slices on the breadcrumbs &
spread meat mixture evenly on top.
Cover with the remaining eggplant
slices, carefully pour the béchamel
sauce evenly over the top. Bake at 180°
for 30 min, sprinkle cheese on top,
continue to cook for another 15 to 30
mins, until golden brown.

Moussaka is traditionally served warm,
in large slices served with a green
salad, crusty bread, and a dry red wine.

Tigers V Goannas on Saturday
This Saturday’s game will see the naming
of two life members of Canowindra Rugby
League. The presentation will take place at
about 2.55 just before first grade take the
field.
The 2011 Woodbridge Cup season is
under way and the Tigers get their first
home game on Saturday. The Youth
League side take on the Goannas at 12:45,
followed by the Tigresses up against the
Girlannas at 2pm with First Grade running
on at 3pm. The first grade match shapes
up as an exciting match of the New
Zealand boys, with Canowindra giving two
young players from Auckland an
opportunity once again; they will be
taking on the Grenfell side with several
players from Wellington.
Our two youngsters Peter Pita and Willie
Lafolafo are loving Canowindra and are
employed by our sponsors Canowindra
Produce, Capital Investments Rural, and
Central West Building services.
First Grade: What a game, it had every-
thing, great attack and some defensive
hits that made the crowd shake. The
Tigers led for seventy two minutes before
Peak Hill got there nose in front and then
finished with two more tries including the
last right on the siren.
Brad Bowman was absolutely outstanding
on the day, he was hit with everything
from the Peak Hill side and yet continually
powered into them eventually scoring one
of the great tries on the day, his defence
was superb, this was a great all round
display by the young front rower. Equally
as impressive was Peter Pita who
cannoned into the defence constantly,
and backed this up with some great
offloads. Centre Matt Kelly returning after
three years away had the last pass in two
tries and scored one himself as the Tigers
got out to a 30-22 lead with eight on the
clock. In the dying stages it was Peak Hills
quality centres Kenny Everson and Trevor
Samuels that got them home 40-30.
This was an incredible game for the first
one of the season with huge efforts from
both sides.

Woodbridge Cup Youth League
A lot like the senior side, the juniors led
for the majority of the match before two
late intercept tries sunk their chances.
Brydon Hughes was easily the best player
on the field, and was backed up by
nuggetty half back Dan Middleton, Dan's
passing game was absolutely 100% on
Sunday, and Sam Wallace who constantly
‘dropped’ the big Peak Hill forwards who
targeted his side of the field. Sam was
rewarded with a good try. Phil Tarrant
nailed a field goal to put the tigers out to
a 23-16 lead. Peak hill scored off a high
bomb to Joseph Moss to narrow it 23-22
before Torin Hando claimed two
intercept tries in as many minutes to take
the victory.
League Tag: The Tigresses play their first
game this Saturday.
A reminder that Full Bar and Canteen
facilities will be operating on Saturday.
