MY CANOWINDRA

GET INSPIRED! Local man Ian Gruber recently launched his book, Beyond Circumstances: The Life and Times of Frederick John Young 1854-1943. This book is the inspirational story of Ian’s grandfather, Fred Young, who challenged adversity from a young age, being orphaned at 5, to achieve extraordinary national success...beyond circumstances! Ian started researching his book in January 2006 with his daughter Janet, and they uncovered many incredible facts. Amongst Fred’s greatest achievements were teaching himself to read at 12 years of age. He also taught himself to build at age 19, which lead to him build in 1891 a three storied mansion on a farm called Yarralumla, near Queanbeyan. This building stands today as the home and offices of the Australian Governor General in Canberra. Fred has contributed much to the history of our nation’s capital, with many structures there a testament to his skills. Incorporating historical fiction to assist with ease of reading, Ian has gathered first hand accounts from friends and relatives, and includes many historical photographs of Fred’s life and achievements. Ian is one of Fred’s three remaining grandchildren, and hopes that all of Fred’s descendants will have a copy of the book one day. You can learn more about Fred‘s amazing life by picking up a copy of this wonderful book at the Canowindra Newsagency or Cullane’s Bookshop, both in Gaskill Street Canowindra, or by ringing Ian direct on 02 6344 1611.

Welcome all to The Old Vic Inn Canowindra on Friday 2 October, at 6:30pm for the opening of Melissa Lazarou’s latest solo exhibition, “MY CANOWINDRA”. Melissa states “This exhibition is different to all my previous exhibitions”. It showcases Melissa’s well known oil landscapes as well as never seen before graphite sketches. These graphite portraits of well know Canowindra “Characters” are the feature of this exhibition. Melissa is very excited about the way her “Character Wall” has come together and has immensely enjoyed the processes of their creation. She states that one of her paintings, “My View” is by far one of her best work to date. “This exhibition is about “my little world” within Canowindra, the places and faces that I grew up with, that mean something.” Says Melissa. They evoke memories of the town in which she was born, raised and works.

Melissa’s artistic profile has grown significantly in recent years and she is seeing ever increasing interest in her work, with galleries wanting to feature her art and her work now going as far afield as England and Canada. This is a must see exhibition!

The Dubbo MP has criticised both the State and Federal Government’s push to publicise school results, “There are so many more important education issues we should be debating in Parliament such as bullying and truancy, and improving facilities in small country schools where students have no choice but to attend the local government school.” Ms Fardell pointed to local communities that have only one public school on offer, and where the publication of school results will be of no benefit. ST EDWARD’S BATTERY DRIVE St Edward’s P&F would like to thanks Kinsela’s Farm Supplies, Canowindra Tyre Service, B&K Burn-Repco, Rue’s Auto Service, Central Motors and the community of Canowindra for their ongoing support of the school’s Battery Drive. With the money raised we have been able to purchase a number of educations tools, including spelling and maths programs for the electronic smart boards in two of the classrooms, something of great benefit to both the students and teachers. So, as a result of the community’s support, we have decided to continue the battery drive as an ongoing project for the school. If you have any old car, truck or heavy machinery batteries that you would like to recycle, the drop off point is Kinsela’s Farm Supplies. St Edward’s P&F again thank you for your support!

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED… What the name of the dog is on the Barclay’s ad above? Well, wonder no more! Ollie is Barclay’s pin-up sire and one of their best working dogs. Kate and Jamie Barclay breed premium working kelpies, and are coming into a very busy part of the year. Demand is high for a good work dog, and they are expecting a litter in the next couple of weeks, so make sure you put your order in before the pups arrive. www.barclayskelpies.com is updated regularly and has full details of new litters, dogs, pedigrees, working dog school and any started or broken in dogs for sale. Barclay’s have just had a successful day at the recent Woodstock Show, providing a three stand crutching trailer for the Speed Shearing contest, organised by BM Chalker Shearing Contracting. They even had to modify the trailer to handle the bigger ewes that are around thanks to all the feed at the moment! The trailer, which can also be used as a mobile shearing shed, has its own power or can be hooked up to your mains, making it completely mobile, which means less stress caused by excessive stock movement. Barclays have a full range of equipment including: a lamb marking cradle, quad and two wheel bikes for contract mustering, fencing equipment, excellent working dogs, trailers and all the tools needed to get the job done. They are fully self contained to allow travel where ever the work is. Jamie has over 15 years farm management experience ranging from stud merinos, horses, fat lambs, cattle, feedlot and irrigation. No job is too big or too small. Contact Jamie on 0448 535 743 or 6344 1117 if you would like a quote or to book a job.

SPORT
TIGERS OUT OF THE RACE - SORRY KEYSIE! Canowindra Tigers premiership hopes are over after a disappointing second half display against the Cargo Blue Heelers at Molong on Sunday. The Grand Final qualifier started full on from end to end but it was the Heelers that ran in two tries early to lead 8-0. Canowindra replied with some good play, for Rob Burn to cross twice and both tries were converted by Aaron Woolley and the Tigers led 12-8. A towering bomb to the corner saw Cargo level the scores through their winger Alf Bishop 12-12. Again the Tigers fought back and Captain Coach Damian Kennedy offloaded a great pass to Robert Freimayer to score for the Tigers 16-12. Right on half time Cargo’s Captain Coach and former Southern Division representative Tim Shephard raced 60m to score and with Matt Watson’s conversion went to the break leading 18-16. The Tigers were fairly confident at half time, knowing they were probably fitter and with a decent breeze at their back, a good kick chase would win them the game. The first 20 minutes of the second half surely cost the Tigers a grand final berth, despite Phil Butler racing 80m to be held up over the line, the Canowindra team imploded making many unforced errors. The Tigers never reached their kick once, giving Cargo the ball in prime attacking position and the Heelers made them pay, racing in 3 unanswered tries to jump to a lead of 34-16. The Tigers continued to fight hard with Aaron Woolley crossing out wide and converting to narrow the gap to 34-22. Twice more the Tigers crossed only to be held up, but the damage had already been done. Both sides crossed for one more try each in the dying stages with Karl Maere grabbing the Tigers try. Cargo advance to the Grand Final while Canowindra now play in the third place play off for the Garry Tiernan Shield at Cowra on Sunday. In the other grand final qualifier Eugowra have defeated the Peak Hill Roosters.
