Purposive sampling technique was employed for the selection of the 89 sampled rattan craftsmen. Descriptive statistics and stochastic profit frontier were employed for data analysis. The descriptive statistics shows that the rattan crafts production enterprise is dominated by men that are within the age bracket of 36 - 50 years indicating active involvement in labour force; mostly literate which give them the ample scope for promoting the growth of the trade; with several of them having working experience that spans between 1 and 15 years. The result of the budgetary technique indicates a net margin of N18, 000.00 per month. The profit frontier results shows that the mean profit efficiency is 60%. Age, years of education, years of working experience significantly influence the profit efficiency. While age and experience have inefficiency reducing effect, years of formal education has efficiency reducing effect. On this premise, it is recommended that the craftsmen should endeavour to reduce their expenses on raw cane by adopting backward vertical integration approach and maximize the benefit of acquired experience in promoting greater efficiency in rattan crafts production enterprise.

ABSTRACT

This study examined the profit efficiency in rattan craft production in South-West Nigeria.
