Helping in the Time of Need
When you are part of an organization that jumps in the time of others’ needs, you have to feel amazing. We heard about a chemical spill West Virginia, and 9 counties needed water. Within 4 hours, our Virginia Chapters raised $6,100. We want to THANK YOU SO MUCH for your support.

On behalf of myself, the West Virginia/Ohio state office and the citizens of our area we would like to thank team Virginia for helping us out during our water disaster! You have no idea how much you helped us in our time of need. I have always thought of Virginia as my home and the Woodmen of the World Virginia office as my family and after the way all of you guys stepped up to help us out just confirms how close of a family we all are at Woodmen. Your generosity has enabled us to continue our disaster relief efforts here at the state office. As of today we have been handing out clean water for seven straight days from 8:00am until 8:00pm and our estimate is around 90,000 bottles. Fraternally, Kevin Crouse State Manager West Virginia & Ohio

From the desk of …
Happy Happy Happy New Year all! I want to first take this time to thank all of you for a great 2013! I really enjoyed all the Christmas parties that I was fortunate enough to be able to attend. I would have loved to have been able to attend all of your Christmas parties but there is only so much time. The celebrations continue to show your local communities how much you care. Next I would like to thank all the chapters who jumped to action to support West Virginia H2O disaster. Virginia Chapters always amaze me by how much you

truly care. If you see Terry Carroll, Jeremy Carroll, Steve Bishop, Ken Widener, or Tyler Lawrence you should thank them for taking a day and delivering 798 cases of water to Hurricane, West Virginia. They woke up early and got back around midnight. So thank you for your support gentlemen. I have picked a theme this year and it is “LEAD WHERE YOU LIVE” I have 3 goals for our chapters this year. Goal 1: Every member bring one new person to a meeting this year. Goal 2: Plan one Community Outreach

These trifold’s will be available for Chapters and the field force to handout to promote this great program. Below is just a sample of what is on the inside of the trifold. A special thanks is sent to Chapter 279 Charlottesville for purchasing a majority of the flags used for this program. Woodmen Living Chapter Calendar FAQs
Starting with the Fall 2014 issue of Woodmen Living, your chapter’s October, November and December events will be printed on the back cover. With this change, the annual calendar mailing will be discontinued, starting in 2015.

Woodmen Living Chapter Calendar FAQ’s

Benefits of Making This Change: It gives members a more immediate view of their chapter’s events covering three months, versus a whole year. It gives chapter officers more flexibility with planning chapter activities because they won’t have to set events more than a year in advance (for example, the deadline for 2014 fourth quarter events will be in July). More chapter events and information will be able to be included on the back cover of Woodmen Living than in the current annual calendar. It saves Woodmen of the World money and cuts down on the need to mail chapter updates. FAQs: Why are you making this change? We’re excited to make this change because it will give each chapter more visibility to our members as a whole. We know that in a lot of chapters, it’s a small group of people doing the bulk of the work. We want to let our members know what is happening in their communities, and we think the quarterly magazine is the perfect place. We suspect that you’ll see some new faces at events once this is rolled out in the fall! Won’t this affect chapter calendar deadlines? Yes, but this change will make it a lot easier on chapter leaders. While we still require chapters to hold an annual calendar meeting to talk about events they want to organize for the following year, now you won’t have to have all the details set in November. The deadlines will be once a quarter and you won’t have as many “to be determined” lines on your calendar! You’ll be hearing more about what the specific deadlines will be and other details later this spring. I belong to more than one chapter. Will I receive magazines for each chapter I belong to? No. Woodmen Living is sent to the oldest member of the household, so that person’s chapter will be featured on the back of the magazine. For all other chapters in the household, we encourage you to visit woodmen.org and your chapter’s website to view and print the calendars anytime you’d like. How do I find my chapter’s calendar online? Did you know every chapter has its own website, and chapter events are a main feature of those websites? Simply go to woodmen.org, click on “Customers and Community” near the top, then click on “Chapters and Community” and do a Chapter Search. Click on the Chapter number, and you’ll be directed to the chapter’s website. You can copy the website address in your browser and share it, and be sure to add it to your favorites. Chapter leaders have the ability to update the website at any time! If you are a chapter leader and are unsure of how to update your website, contact your Community Outreach Manager for help. What will this look like? Please see the next page for an example of what this will look like.

Support Virginia Chapter Outreach is a NEW section we will be adding to the Community Connection as needed. This section is going to feature Virginia Chapter Community Outreach Projects that Chapters around the state of Virginia might want to be involved with and support even if the Outreach project is not in your local area. If you have a project that you might want featured in the Community Connection, please send Scott or Sheri an email. “THE MEMORIAL” It all started with a dream… The Lima Company Memorial: The Eyes of Freedom was created as a result of a vision of an Ohio artist, in which she saw the finished memorial and felt she was being asked to create it. With the help of the families of the fallen and the returned Marines of L3/25, the work was created and unveiled in the Ohio State House Rotunda in 2008, as the vision foretold. Although the paintings in this Memorial specifically depict the 23 fallen Marines from Lima 3/25, it has become much more: a Remembrance of Spirit & Choice for all who have answered the call of service. Behind each portrait we feel the hearts and spirits of the thousands of men and women who have served, fought and died for their country, in every branch of the armed forces. It has been said, “There is no greater love than this: than one lay down his life for his friends.” These Marines and thousands more have given their lives for us. The Memorial now travels to tell the story of love and sacrifice, as a reminder of the great price men & women are willing to pay for their country. This work is offered in gratitude for their gift.” This information and pictures were taken from www.limacompanymemorial.org. This is a project that Chapter 7 Lynchburg is helping support. They are looking for donations to the project. Lynchburg would like the traveling exhibit to spend some time in Lynchburg, Virginia. The Outreach Coordinator for this project is Gary Witt. For additional information and to support/donate please contact Gary Witt at 434258-1808 or by email [email protected]. Gary will be happy to provide you with additional information.

Fraternal Summits are a great way to learn, grow, share and “Lead Where you Live”. The gears are rolling up here at the State Office in planning one of the best Woodmen of the World Educational events this state has ever seen! In 2014 Sheri and I will be conducting 5 Fraternal Summits. We know that it is getting expensive to travel long distances so we are bringing them closer to you. Please see below for dates and locations. These events are for any individual who wants to “Lead Where They Live” and help grow Woodmen of the World. So, any Chapter Officer, member or perspective member is invited to these great trainings. We are putting together a lot of take home material so that you can go back to your local chapters and “Lead Where you Live”. We will be asking each chapter to pay a $10/person registration fee (to cover the lunch). You will be receiving a registration form in your email. Please encourage as many people from your chapter to attend these Summit’s. SEE YOU THERE!

From the desk of Terry Wayne Carroll
Hello Again Virginia Woodmen: Well, 2013 is history and I hope you and your chapters accomplished everything you set out to do last year. If by chance that did not happen, you now have a second chance. Not many times do we get second chances. I am certain that you made a significant difference throughout Virginia in 2013 with the reports I have been reading. Some of you went beyond the call of duty as you reached out to your communities and you are to be commended. Thank you for all you did as you waved the Woodmen flag with class and honor.

By now you should have set your activity goals for 2014. Many of you did a great job getting your calendars in and earning the bonus points toward the 5 Star Challenge. Help us set a record this year with the most qualifiers AND do everything you can to increase your star level over last year. All that will mean is that you will help more people, take a load off of someone, provide love and support in their darkest hours and make your part of the forest a little better. I am sorry to say that very well might be one of us when Woodmen people have to show up. Lead your chapters as if it will in fact be someone you are close to and you will be amazed at how you approach every meeting, activity or project. The team in the fraternal division have developed some great new tools for you to access as you lead your chapters. The Woodmen "Care Package" is but one of those tools. Please make sure you understand it and take full advantage of the many ideas and support this exciting tool will offer you. Work smart to appoint the right people who can with ease navigate and use the new technical support tools that are available to post and record all of your chapters accomplishments. Please take full advantage of these tools, and as leaders, know where you are at all times in order to keep your members informed and challenged. We have put out the call many times in the past when our friends have had disasters and urgent needs. The chapters in Virginia are second to none in responding to these needs. That was no more evident than last weekend when in a matter of about two hours you wonderful people had committed to the purchase of 796 cases of water for our friends in West Virginia. To say is was a shock when those people were told not to use the water to bathe, cook, wash their cloths, use their toilets, care for their pets and farm animals, close their schools and businesses is an understatement. That was truly a disaster that happened very quickly and the needs were immediate. Thank you Virginia Woodmen for such an outstanding response. In closing I want to pledge the support of the state office staff of Joyce, Kay, Vicki, Scott, Sheri and myself to you and your members for 2014. Let us make this the best year ever as we continue to prove to the world that when Woodmen people show up, you can depend on great things happening! Lead with passion and they will follow, otherwise, you are only taking a walk? Fraternally Terry

Five-year-old Grayson Tolley was diagnosed with Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcus (PANDAS) in October 2013. In a child with PANDAS, their antibodies do not react normally to a strep infection. Instead of attacking the infection, the antibodies attack the basal ganglia in the brain, causing severe behavioral issues. His family needs help covering Grayson's medical treatment, which is not covered by insurance and must be paid for in full before the treatment begins. Grayson’s family is trying to raise a total of $15,000. Please visit Red Basket at www.redbasket.org for the Grayson’s full story. $3,630 has been raised as of 1/22/14 and has 27 days remaining on the project. Lets help him reach his goal. If you have a project for Red Basket let us know and we will help you get it up and running. www.facebook.com/Graysonspandas IT IS HERE!! Red Basket is open for Virginia Projects. We want to encourage all of you to visit www.redbasket.org, create an account and see the awesome power of this new program. This program is geared to help needy members and to reach out to needy people and groups inside your local community. Projects that are posted on Red Basket are not restricted to Woodmen of the World members. In fact, it is geared to non members as much as it is geared to members. Sheri and Scott will be training at your Fraternal Summits on this new great program. Here is some great information to help you get a little better understanding of Red Basket.  Chapters can Donate by Check! (projects might qualify for matching funds.) When you donate to a specific project or story (“Ask”) on RedBasket.org, you must use the web site. For now, we are limiting directed (“designated”) donations to the e-commerce options offered on our site. If you would like to support Red Basket’s administrative costs through an undesignated donation, you may mail donations to: Red Basket, c/o Business Development, 1700 Farnam St, .Omaha, NE 68102 -2007 If you host a fundraiser in support of an individual or project on RedBasket.org, you may also open an account on RedBasket.org and submit a lump sum donation via credit card or PayPal account. Only the person or entity submitting the lump sum donation can claim a charitable deduction.  We want to help We know there are people who feel the same way – we want to do what we can to help someone in need. We like to compare this to a barn raising. In the Midwest, friends and neighbors used to come together and literally build a barn from scratch in a day. When everybody does their part, miracles can happen and lives are changed. *Our Red Basket state coordinator is Kay Keen. She will be in charge of approving projects and helping you enter projects. Sheri and I are also experts in Red Basket and will be here to assist you in any way needed. Start thinking of individuals, groups or community projects that might qualify so we can help the masses.

Volunteer's Creed Though my troubles and my worries are sometimes all that I can see still I always must remember life's not only about me. Other souls are also hurting and I know that it's God's plan to reach out to help another to extend them my hand. With this purpose as my focus to be a comfort to a friend all my troubles and my worries seem to fade out in the end. It is one of God's true lessons how my walk is meant to be true happiness I find when life's not only about me. ~Tom Krause
