t-shaped scar over Clifford Ellenwood’s right eye serves as testament to his reckless drinking days and the night a beer bottle smashed into his face. “I wandered, and I was lost. I was very, very lost.” The light of Clifford’s life, on the other hand, his four-year-old daughter, Jordan Marie, serves as testament to God’s grace and His ability to bring beauty out of chaos. Almost fifteen years before Clifford found himself at the Union Gospel Mission, he had accepted Christ through the Mission’s outreach at Juvenile Detention. He was 16. When he got out of detention, however, his old friends were waiting and the slide back into his old lifestyle was effortless. Pulled in both directions, Cliff joined the Master’s Commission – a year-long intensive training in biblical knowledge and character at Zion Christian Center. After demonstrating the discipline and drive to complete the program, Cliff still found his old way of life an easy option. “After a full year of ‘yes, Lord, yes, Lord,’ I went out and drank again. “I went back out into that lifestyle because I had these ideas in my mind that I didn’t belong. I thought, These people are better than me; so I went back to old friends where I felt like I belonged, and it was nothing but hell after that for almost ten years. “There’s no guarantee when you live that life of sin, and you come out from the protection of the Lord, and you’re out there like a sheep among wolves . . . and that’s what I was. I was scared, but I couldn’t find a way out. I believed at one time I was never continued to page 3...

We Fall Down. We Get Up.
We fall down. We get up. Sometimes new beginnings are as simple as that. Clifford Ellenwood fell down and got up. He fell down and got up again. The truth is, we all fall, and sometimes we need help to get back up. New Year’s resolutions have become a bit of a joke in our society for that very reason; we break them almost as soon as we make them. Our journeys are not journeys of perfection. The ministries of the Union Gospel Mission are based on grace and the understanding that we are all – residents, staff, and volunteers alike – broken people in need of God’s mercy and forgiveness. We seek to be a place where it is safe to be yourself, to be transparent with your honest struggles, and where we help each other get back up when we fall. This is perhaps most obvious among our residents who experience a wide range of new beginnings: the first day of a life free of drugs and alcohol; learning new job skills; expressing hidden feelings for the first time; and being introduced to the love of Christ. Less obvious, but no less significant, are the new beginnings for staff and volunteers when we see the world in a new light, meet people we might never have otherwise known, reorder priorities, witness God’s transforming power, and realize that the same God who rescues the homeless and softens the hardened heart works within us, cares about us, and changes us. Something you might not know about Clifford is that he has a heart for his people, Native Americans. He realizes that his new beginning is not just a new beginning for him but for his daughter and the generations that come after her, as well. He wants to tell his story of transformation to anyone who will listen because he knows God can use one changed life to change another and another. We all fall down, but it is in the getting back up that we witness God’s grace. I’m excited for a new

Phil Altmeyer, Executive Director year, to witness the new people God brings through both our doors and the new beginnings He has in store. Thank you for helping people get back up when they fall. Serving Together,

Change at Anna Ogden Hall
Anna Ogden Hall experienced a change of leadership in October. Debi Pauletto, who had been the director for nine years, stepped down to make more time for family. Executive Director Phil Altmeyer praised Debi’s tenure as a unifying time for the ministry and expressed his gratitude that she won’t be leaving UGM Ministries altogether. Debi has assumed a new position in Donor Relations. She is looking forward to getting to know our donors better and having the opportunity to share stories about the lives they’ve helped to transform. Chris Armstrong, the new director, said she feels as though God has been preparing her for this position her whole life. The first time she walked into Incoming director, Chris Armstrong (Left) Ogden, she loved the fact that it felt nothing like a homeless shelter. Her and outgoing director, Debi Pauletto vision for the future is to build on that foundation. “When I look at our If you would like to help the women women here, I don’t see homeless women. I see leaders. My passion, my at AOH, there is always a need for heart for his ministry, is to help these women find that leader within themvolunteers. Please call to sign up for our selves. I want them to understand the fullness of who God created them to volunteer orientation class! 509.535.8510 be and live it.”

story continued from front page... gonna make it out. I should have died.” When Clifford got out of jail in November 2005, the thought immediately came to him, Go to the Union Gospel Mission. He pushed the idea aside. A homeless shelter was the last place he wanted to go, and he wouldn’t . . . until he had cut himself off from every other tie. “I had nothing. I had nothing.” He partied hard on January 1, 2006 and afterward realized, “Nobody wants me around, and I don’t know what to do, so I’m gonna go down to the Mission and just stay for the night.” When he stepped through the east door, however, Clifford had the sensation of coming home – not so much physically as spiritually. As the Mission’s warmth welcomed him, he realized God was also welcoming him. Cliff joined the Mission’s Grace Recovery program. He confessed his fear of not being good enough and found the sense of belonging for which he Today Clifford has hope for a good future.

the Lord, it would work out.” Clifford doesn’t need the scar over his eye to remind him of the past. He’s in little danger of forgetting that he missed the first three years of his daughter’s life. Overshadowing any regret, however, is his joy in the present and hope for the future – that his life will serve as testament to the power of God to transform.
