YOUNG CARERS OFFICER 1. MAIN TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT Job Title

Salary

£25,515 pro rata (£14, 308)

Hours

18 hours per week. Some out of office hours working will be expected, particularly Saturdays. Time off in lieu is given.

Employed by: Carers Lewisham Management Committee, and supervised by Carers Lewisham Young Carers Service Manager. 2.

AIMS OF THE POST

2.1 To co-ordinate respite service for young carers aged 8-11 years old in Lewisham that meets their specific needs and supports their families by increasing young carer’s involvement in groups, activities and events and provide a break from caring. 2.2 To identify and provide practical and emotional support to children and young people who have caring responsibilities within the London Borough of Lewisham aimed at reducing inappropriate caring. 2.3 To raise awareness of the situation of Young Carers with other professionals and the general public. 3.

DUTIES

3.1 To plan, organise and deliver 11 monthly clubs; 18 holiday (day) schemes and events for young carers. 3.2 To carry out home visits and casework for young carers, aged 8-11, who are referred to the service. 3.3 Liaise with young carers to identify their emotional, social and recreational needs and encourage them to access suitable youth orientated services and facilities. 3.4 To co-ordinate Sessional Workers and Volunteer’s involvement in the respite activities as needed.

3.5 To assist with follow up work arising from home visits and enquiries including making phone calls on behalf of young carer’s and their families, making referrals, writing simple letters and making notes on the Carers Lewisham database. 3.6 Act as an advocate on behalf of Young Carers and their families including liaising with schools, social services and other relevant professionals at TAC/F meetings and conferences to improve the quality of life for young carers. 3.7

Giving telephone or other means of practical support where required.

3.8 Consult with young carers and their families in order to deliver a service that is responsive to their needs. 3.9 Provide specific information for Young Carers and professionals in both the statutory and voluntary sectors who may be working with them. 3.10 To assist organising awareness-raising events and workshops, producing newsletters and social networking programmes aimed at raising the profile of and communicating with Young Carers. 3.11 To maintain accurate records on the project’s database, monitoring & evaluation of the young carers service using relevant assessment tools and spreadsheets. 3.12

Provide written reports on the progress of respite activities as appropriate.

3.13 To collect statistical information for monitoring purposes and prepare regular reports on the work and development of the service, and carry out assessments to track the progression of individual young carers. 3.13 To carry out the duties of the post with due regard to Carers Lewisham's Policies and Procedures. 3.14 As a member of the Carers Lewisham Team to participate in collectively responsible activities such as Duties; AGMs and other Team activities as required. 3.15 Must be available to work flexible hours in particular evenings and weekend as necessary. PERSON SPECIFICATION ALL ESSENTIAL UNLESS OTHERWISE IDENTIFIED

Experience of working with individuals who look after others or affected by caring Organising and coordinating young person centred programmes and activities Undertaking complex casework directly with young people and their families Engaging and working with diverse young people in a youth orientated environment or setting Have an ability to build good rapport with disadvantaged and marginalised young people Experience of enabling diverse young people to become involved in significant decision making processes Experience of team work and commitment to being a team member Keeping accurate and up to date records

Qualifications: • •

DipSW, CQSW, JNC Youth and Community Work or equivalent. Hold a current First Aid at Work, four-day qualification or be prepared to train for one Equalities: • •
