After decades of empty promises, local officials
were once again left crestfallen with the NDP’s recent response regarding one of Strathmore’s perennial issues. Following a letter from Deputy Minister
of Health Janet Davidson, announcing yet another
study into the situation surrounding the expansion
of the Strathmore Hospital, town council turned to
Strathmore-Brooks MLA Derek Fildebrandt to bring
the pressing matter back to the legislature’s forefront.
However, after raising the concerns with Minister
of Health Sarah Hoffman on June 26, the topic, for
now, continues to be shelved.
“I discussed this at length in my maiden speech
and I asked about it repeatedly in question period
with the health minister, and the answer has been
stay tuned; which has been the answer for a lot of
different things,” said Fildebrandt. “Getting a hospital
in Strathmore is not a part of an issue, it’s an issue
of the government following through on a very longstanding commitment. We appreciate that they’re still
getting a grasp on their files and they’re not necessarily briefed on a lot of these things. It’s my role to
keep the pressure up on it and put it back on the
agenda.”
Despite ranking as one of the busiest rural hospitals in Alberta, the Strathmore facility hasn’t received
any of the promised upgrades or expansions since
it’s construction in the mid 1980s.
A year ago, local officials and surrounding area representatives met in Strathmore to discuss the issues
with then Minister of Infrastructure Wayne Drysdale.
While the sit-down gathering served as an informational and fact-finding meeting, those in attendance
were presented with two options – a long-term and
a short-term solution. While a major capital project
would’ve cost upwards of $85 million, an interim project was proposed to relieve some of the pressures.
By housing diagnostic imaging, pharmacy, laboratory,
and home care in the currently vacant hospital wing,
more space would be freed up for the emergency department with a cost of $2 million. While Strathmore
was hopeful that the issue would rank in the Top 15
of priorities this year, the creation of Alberta’s new
NDP government meant further delays.
“I look forward to having an opportunity to work
collaboratively with the minister of infrastructure and
our cabinet to bring forward a sunshine list to really
reflect a list of needs of Albertans,” said Minister of
Health Sarah Hoffman. “In the fall, we expect that
we will be able to do that and we’ll be able to have
a dialogue with all members of this house. In the
interim I encourage members, at any time, to send
correspondence of questions or concerns that they
have to me, and we will do our best to get back to
them in a timely way.”

Canada Day big success
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

With double the vendors, all-day-long
entertainment, and attractions that never fail to impress, this year’s Canada Day
celebrations accomplished what numerous volunteers and town staff set out to
achieve – delivering a bigger and better
event.
An estimated 1,500 residents frequented Kinsmen Park on July 1, taking part
in activities such as face painting, the
dunk tank, petting zoo, bouncy castles,
and the watermelon-eating contest.
Compared to prior years, the town
placed greater focus on food vendors,
which came up short previously. As a
result, community members had more
selection between burgers, hot dogs, ice
cream, and cotton candy.
“Last year we really struggled to keep
people fed, so our main focus this year
was trying to find some new local food
vendors. We had almost twice as many
food trucks out and people seemed to
really like that,” said Tracy Simpson,
community services coordinator with
the Town of Strathmore.“We take the
same plan every year, and try to build
in it and make it a little bit bigger and
better.

“We had no major glitches and the
weather cooperated for the most part,
which is always a tough thing. It was a
success in our books.”
Not only did the town bring back the
usual activities, but the Hope Bridges
Society was also approached about
coming up with an art project to include
citizens from Strathmore and the surrounding areas. In collaboration with
the Strathmore Regional Arts Collective,
and 400 triangular plastic pieces – all of
which were used – the Strathmore amphitheatre will now permanently house
the project: Maple Leaf Tree.
“What’s so fantastic, is you can look
and there are some very detailed works
of art that are hanging up there and
then there are some very simple childlike representations of Canadian pride
there as well,” said Wanda Reinholdt.
“This particular story was about Canadian pride of all generations. That’s what
the story is. That’s what my focus is as
an independent artist is telling a story.”
Representatives from the town said
they believe attendance was up this year,
based on the unwavering steady flow
of people for most of the day. With the
2015 celebrations now passed, staff are
already brainstorming on how to make
next year’s event even better. Although

128 - 2nd Avenue, Strathmore

they offered much positive feedback,
residents did point out the lack of activities for teenagers. Keeping that in mind,
Simpson and her staff will place a focus
on coming up with creative ways to entertain 12 to 16-years-olds next year.
As entertainment, which included Dallas Larsen, Sykamore, Kirstyn Johnson,
Pulse, and Inkahoots, slowly petered to
an end, Strathmore finished Canada’s
birthday with yet another stellar firework show.

Q: What is Embalming?
A: Embalming, by definition, is the “process

of chemically treating the dead human
body to reduce the presence and growth of
microorganisms, to temporarily inhibit organic
decomposition, and to restore an acceptable
physical appearance.” This process is usually
performed by injecting a formaldehyde
based chemical into the arterial system.
The formaldehyde reacts with proteins
in the body and renders them unsuitable
for microorganisms to grow on. This is
a temporary situation and the body will
eventually decompose naturally depending
on several external factors such as the type
of casket and soil conditions. Embalming is
not legally required except when transporting
across borders or with public transportation,
although many funeral homes require
embalming if there is to be a public viewing.

Advocacy looks to bring hospital
back onto government’s agenda
Continued from Page 1

However, frustrations are still growing among local politicians who are
aware of the issues close to home and
feel more studies are unnecessary. With
demand at the hospital continuing to
increase, some are worried about keeping current doctors employed.
“To be quite honest, I feel this is a
stalling technique and once again we’re
being asked to wait,” said Councillor
Bob Sobol. “Our situation at the hospital is not getting any better, it’s getting
worse. I’m very aware of the fact that
the doctors are frustrated up there with
the lack of facilities. It’s a situation that
is becoming fairly dire. These people
are very dedicated individuals and I just
feel it’s unfair to have them working in
these conditions. We haven’t been playing this game for 10 years, we’ve been
playing this game for 25 to 30 years.”
According to Sobol, patients are regularly transferred to other hospitals due
to a lack of beds. He said as many as
a dozen patients are being transferred
out of the hospital within a 72-hour pe-

Although Strathmore won’t see upgrades to the hospital in the near future, Fildebrandt said the issue is his
number one priority and he will continue to speak about it in the house. He
is also arranging for key stakeholders
within the community to meet with the
minister, once the legislature is back in
session.

With all the talk about vitamin D during the
past couple of years, it’s understandable to
be a little confused over how much we need
each day. It used to be that 400 IU daily was
the right amount. Now, doses of 2000 IU to
4000 IU are being recommended and some
sources say as much as 8000IU is the answer.
The right answer is probably in the 2000IU

RCMP 15 years ago.
Here in Strathmore, White was posted within
the Crime Reduction Unit. One of the main parts
of her job requires her to monitor habitual offenders upon their release into the community.
White ensures criminals are abiding by the conditions they were released under, and liaisons
with other police forces, including Calgary City
police and Lethbridge City police. She said that
crime doesn’t stay in boundaries and because of
Strathmore’s close proximity to Calgary, which
has over one million people, there is bound to be
spillover. Therefore, communication between the
forces is essential.
However, her effort to keep the town safe
doesn’t stop there. She sits on the Strathmore
Regional Victim Services Society board, teaches
DARE (Drugs Abuse Resistance Program), and
has started the Strathmore Neighbourhood Watch
program.
The program stemmed from her work in the
Crime Reduction Unit, that focuses on educating
the public, preventing crime, and keeping an eye
out for suspicious activity.
“In other areas where I worked I have started
community projects similar to this,” said White.
“But essentially I want to get that education
awareness out there.”
As White explains nobody knows their community better than those who live in it, the Neighbourhood Watch program consists of 19 community-involved citizens who act as an extra pair of
eyes and ears for the Strathmore RCMP. White
explained that one of the watch’s most valuable
properties is their ability to educate the rest of
the community on how to prevent crime and
keep safe.
By teaching them small safety tips, they can
spread the information to others. This including

not leaving ladders lying around which thieves
can use to enter the house, or leaving the garage
opener inside the vehicle.
An eye-opener for White, was the mention of
many people not knowing when to call the police or which number to use.
“Obviously if it is an emergency or a crime in
progress call 9-1-1,” she said.
Since the program started, along with the educational aspect, breaking and entering incidents
have decreased by 51 per cent and White believes
spreading the word has played a major role.
The constable also represents her detachment
on the board of directors for the Victim Services
Unit.
“I have been with the RCMP for 15 years and
I am very aware of what victim services does
in supporting those people who are victims of
crime,” she said.
“I believe wholeheartedly in the program and
what they do for people.”
However, it’s the DARE program is one of her
favourite parts of her job. She has been teaching the program since 2001 and for the past four
years has speaking to Grade 6 students from
Westmount Elementary School. White said the
program expands beyond drug education and
relies on helping children make good decisions.
They are taught to weigh the pros and cons we
make decisions every day of our life. The program consists of 10 classes and the children have
a graduation upon completion. So far it has received good feedback from parents and teachers.
“I love the program, it is incredibly awarding
and you get to develop a relationship with the
children that you normally wouldn’t do,” she said.
While White has accomplished much in her
short four years in Strathmore, she credits the
people she works with. She compared her work
environment to sports, saying that each person
has their individual roles but they must work together to solve crimes.
She added: “Ultimately we all have the same
goal to make and continue to keep Strathmore as
a great place to raise children. We want to keep
the community safe.”

Strathmore Corporal selected for Changing of Guards
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

While at a wedding 17 years ago, then six-yearold Cameron Drummond’s eyes were fixed on a
young girl dancing - or so his parents thought.
As it turned out, Drummond was actually fixated
with the man playing the bagpipes next to the
young dancer.
Since that moment, the bagpipes have played
a constant in the now 23-year-old’s life, provided
opportunities to travel the world, and landed him
a position with the Ceremonial Guard in Ottawa
this summer.
Drummond, a Strathmore resident who’s been
residing in Ottawa since May, is one of approximately 30 pipes and drum musicians, that make
up a subunit of the band of the ceremonial guard
which is comprised of 130 members. In its entirety, the guard swells to nearly 400 individuals
over the summer from members of the Canadian
Navy, Army, and Air Force personnel.
“With the pipes and drums, it’s quite a closeknit community, and I find that people are more
Scottish in Ontario than they are in Scotland,” said
Captain David Rennie. “The ceremonial guard is a
bit of an icon. It’s an important institution. This is
probably one of the only places where members
of the general public - the Canadian populace actually see a soldier at work. It’s not all about
combat clothing and in the heat of the battle. It’s
not all that. This is just another part of it.”
After three weeks of intensive drill training,
maintaining a high standard of dress and deportment, mastering precision movements while paying an instrument, and undergoing considerable
physical fitness training, the guard performed
their first Changing of the Guard ceremony on

June 27 – a performance modelled after those
observed at Buckingham Palace in England.
Having been in the military with the Calgary
Highlanders for six years, Drummond previously
travelled to England, met the Queen, and participated in numerous battlefield tours. Together
with his bagpipe, the piper also performed at
the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in 2012. Although he had been approached several times
over the years to audition for the Ceremonial
Guard, Drummond could never find the time.
Then, with a slowdown of the Alberta oil patch,
the Strathmore local decided it was time to head
to Ottawa.
“I’ve been asked a few times over the years
and I really hadn’t had time,” said Corporal Cameron Drummond. “It’s a great honour to be doing
it. It’s something to give back to the country.”
Besides providing an anticipated summer attraction and performing on Parliament Hill,
Drummond will also supply sentries – a soldier
stationed to keep guard – at the National War
Memorial and Rideau Hall.
While his parents Carol-Ann and Russ Drummond remember the countless hours he spent
practicing, as well as his track record, his recent
move comes as no surprise to the family.
“Instead of sports, he was doing this, and it has
taken him all over the world,” said Russ Drummond.
During the summer, the Ceremonial Guard will
make several appearances in eastern Ontario.
While this is Drummond’s first experience with
the Ceremonial Guard, he is looking forward to
perform in the military and musical event, Fortissimo, in which he had taken part in 2011. The
event will take place on the Parliament Hill’s
lawns from July 23-25.

Strathmore Legion breaks fundraising
record for military families
ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Contributor

Since its conception in 2006, the Strathmore
Legion’s fundraising event Shoot for the Troops
has helped to raise about $20,000 for the Calgary
Military Family Resource Centre, but this year exceeded expectations with a record-breaking high.
The local Legion was able to raise $5,503.75 for
the centre this year, nearly doubling the amount
raised last year.
“It was the biggest one yet since we have
been running Shoot for the Troops,” said Jenny
Schumann, the Legion President who helped to
create the event. “To think we started this in our
little Legion and we are proud that we started
this.”
This year’s event brought out people from
Southern B.C. and High Prairie to compete in the
dart throwing. According to Schumann it has inspired Legions from Drumheller and Winnipeg to
start their own Shoot for the Troops fundraising
events. The Legion presented the cheque to the
centre on June 8.
The Calgary Military Family Resource Centre is
thankful for the record donation.
“We really appreciate the support of the Strathmore Legion and all those that competed in the
tournament,” said Carla Tremblay, one of the Calgary MFRC board of directors. “It was a record-

setting donation and we are extremely pleased to
have it.”
Tremblay who is also a retired captain and a
military wife explains that the money will go on
to help the centre to continue supporting military
personal and their families in the area that runs
from the United States border to Red Deer.
One of their main goals is to try to maintain a

strong military family as Calgary no longer has a

base.
They try to achieve this sense of community
through workshops and programs. A children’s
program is one of the programs that the centre
runs with the hopes that the children can meet
with others who have something in common with
them.
There is also a workshop that helps personnel
and their families prepare for the separation of
deployment, and a mental health workshop that
helps prepare families for the changes that will
happen when their family member returns to civilian life.
“Someone said war doesn’t end on the battlefield and we really see it in the MFRC,” she said.
“When a parent goes away – regardless of whether they come back – changes have occurred in the
time they are away.”
Next year will be the 10th annual Shoot for the
Troops, and Schumann is excited that it will be
bigger than this year’s event.

Raising the roof(s) a big success
CAROL B. MUNCHRATH
Raising the Roof

The Raising the Roof(s) dinner and silent auction on Saturday, June 20 in Rockyford successfully raised $7,860 towards Phase 2 of the Vikas
India Village Project.
The amount raised will go towards building
12 new homes for 12 families in Thurakapalem,
Andhra Pradesh State, India.
St. Rita’s, Rockyford Partner Group wishes to
express sincere thanks to all who attended the
fundraising/awareness event. Guests were from
Calgary, Beiseker, Acme, Linden, Standard, Strathmore and Rockyford. Everyone enjoyed an evening of delicious western and East Indian food
and the performances of special guest, East Indian
dancer Tanisha.
The Partner Group especially wishes to say
thank you to all the sponsors for their time, talent
and or treasure. The group would also like to extend and sincere thank you to all the donors and
bidders of the silent auction.
Since the formation of St. Rita’s, Rockyford Partner Group in January of 2015, the Partner Group
has received/raised a total of $21,000 towards the
building of the 12 homes in Thurakapalem – the
childhood home of St. Rita’s Parish Priest, Father
Joseph Nagothu.
Each home costs $12,500 to build, so the Partner Group has provided sufficient funds for one
home and a substantial amount towards a second
home.
Also, one family in the Rockyford Community

has chosen to provide sufficient funds to build
one home in memory of a deceased loved one. A
very sincere thank you is extended to all the very
generous donors in the community of Rockyford
and to all our friends near and far.
At their wind-up meeting and luncheon on Sunday, June 28, the group voted to dissolve the Partner Group upon having successfully fulfilled the
goals formulated at their January organizational
meeting. A sincere thank you is also extended to
the all the members of St. Rita’s, Rockyford Partner Group for volunteering their time, talent and
or treasures the past six months.
Those who still wish to make a contribution to
the Vikas India Village Project: Phase II – the building of 12 new homes for 12 families in Thurakapalem, may do so by mailing their donations directly to the Calgary RC Diocesan Mission Council
at 120-17th Avenue SW, Calgary, Atla., T2S-2TA.
Please make all cheques payable to the Calgary
RC Diocesan Mission Council with memo: Vikas
India Village Project.
One hundred per cent of all donations go
straight to the project. An income tax receipt will
be issued to the donor by the Calgary RC Diocesan Mission Council. Donation envelopes are also
available from Father Joseph Nagothu at 403-5333791.
If you as an interested individual, family, organization, group or business wish to learn more
about the Vikas India Village Project, please contact volunteer project manager Bill Locke, via

Student’s final project
LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor

Brynn Linsey, a final-year student at
Rosebud School of the Arts (RSA), presents Holy Mo as her Final Project, July
23 to 26.
“Holy Mo is the story of Moses as
told by three vagabond clowns named
Follie, Bufoona and Guff,” Linsey said.
“They’re very funny, very
human characters that
absolutely admire the
man that is Moses and
have a deep love for I
AM, which is God. And
they travel the world telling the story of Moses.”
Audience members will
relate to the three clowns
because they’re like people we all know, she said.
Follie (played by Linsey) is a planner, a very
strong personality. Bufoona (Cassia Schramm) is a “goofball”.
Guff (Alix Cowman) doesn’t speak but
makes sure everything else works.
“The three characters ... go right up to
the audience and they ask them questions and they give them things and
they make music together and it’s very
very much interactive,” Linsey said.
Holy Mo “is very deeply playful in so
many ways, and then you’ll have these
moments in the play that are serious,”
she said. “They find themselves wondering how this deep love (they have)
for God and the love that He has for us
works into the story and the challenges
we face as Christians.”
That blend of playfulness and seriousness made Linsey want to do this
play.

“I find myself as a young Christian in
the world wondering about how I integrate my faith - which seems so serious
and solemn and massive - into my daily
life. And how I can enjoy my life knowing that there’s pain in the world,” she
said. “I find myself often forgetting how
important relationship and laughter is.”
Producing the show is pushing Linsey to grow through in some big ways.
“I’m a very shy person,”
she said, so she’s had to
grow in the confidence
to market her show, inviting people to see it. Because of her shyness, “I
(also) really had to learn
and come to terms with
really being vocal about
my faith,” she said.
Beyond the laughter
and the questions, Linsey
wants her Final Project
to be an expression of
gratitude. “Holy Mo, for
me, is a thank you to all of the people
that have come see me in shows and
have been brave enough and heartfelt
enough to approach me and say thank
you,” she said. It’s for people who have
“supported the company and that have
supported the school and donated their
time, their money, their prayer, their
hearts to this organization and to the
students.”
Holy Mo plays in Rosebud’s Akokiniskway Gallery July 23 at 5 p.m.; July
24 at 11:30 a.m.; July 25 at 5 p.m.; and

Times TIDBITS

Did You Know?
According to meteorologists, summer extends for the
whole months of June, July and August in the northern
hemisphere and the whole months of December, January
and February in the southern hemisphere.
This meteorological definition of summer also aligns with
the commonly viewed notion of summer as the season
with the longest (and warmest) days of the year,
in which daylight predominates.

Strathmore Pregnancy Care
network helps expectant moms
ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Contributor

The Strathmore Pregnancy Care Network is
a special centre that helps local women decide
which path to take with their pregnancy, with options of adoption, abortion, and parenthood.
The local network, which opened its doors one
year ago, is run by Jenn Page and her team of welltrained volunteers. By providing advice regarding
pregnancy and motherhood, the team tries to help
Strathmore residents in need of a little bit of help.
“We never refuse or turn anyone away so even if
it is not a specific situation that we generally deal
with then we will still try help them the best we
can,” said Page.
According to research done by the University
of Ottawa, and despite 80 per cent of Canadian
women using some form of birth control, many
pregnancies are unplanned.
Therefore, the centre offers a wide range of services and classes, while focusing mainly on unplanned or crisis pregnancies.
This is why the network is important for Strathmore, as this is the only place in the area that can
deal with the anxiety that these women feel when
it comes to the decision of how they want to proceed. Other than the one in Strathmore the closest
centre like this is in the South West of Calgary,
which for a few women is too far away.
“We give them all the information regarding the
losses, risks as well as the pros and cons,” Page
said
“We don’t push her towards one option or another, we just give her the information and let her
choose what is best for her.”
Regardless of which option is pursued, Page
and her volunteers help out however they can by
providing information, offering classes, and sup-

port groups.
For those that choose parenting there are classes for expecting mothers, as well as classes for
moms and tots. Maternity wear and clothes for
children from newborn to two-years-old are offered to clients in the lower income bracket,
which the clients can access every 30 days.
For the women who feel abortion is best, the
centre provides the information to explain the
process and provide answers to numerous questions. The women can also come back anytime if
they have questions or emotions to work through.
For the adoption option, the centre has pre- and
post-adoption support groups. The pre-adoption
support group helps the birth mother to decide
how she wants the process to go. They also help
the birth mother to decide how she wants the process of the placement ceremony at the hospital to
go. If the mother decides she wants some kind of
connection with the child, the centre helps to get
her in touch with the adoptive parents.
The post-adoption support groups help the
birth mother to deal with the loss and the grieving
process of giving up the child. Page refers to these
meetings as a safe place for the women to talk.
Classes for the moms who choose to keep their
children are offered too. These classes deal with
helping the moms live a better life. The leap class
is all about life skills, boundaries, and relationships, and the money and budgeting class helps
the women manage their finances.
“So that is what we do here,” Page said. “If there
is anything medical or if they have a medical question then we refer them to doctors or clinics who
are taking new inpatients.”
The centre is now open Monday, Tuesday, and
Thursday afternoons and anyone is welcome, including walk-ins. For more information or to book
an appointment contact 587-896-0902.

THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD
My good friend, Ben Peters told
me this story once. There was a
little lamb named James. James
felt that he was very capable
of taking care of himself and
making his own decisions as to
where to graze and how far to
go. He didn’t like the rules that
the shepherd laid down nor did
he want to be under the constant
surveillance of the shepherd. He
knows there is greener grass on
the other side. So, he sneaks off
to greener pastures with a few
friends when no one is looking.
He felt great being away from
that watchful eye. At first, everything seemed so much greener
and the water so much clearer.
When he snuck back to the old
pasture, he began to judge the
shepherd and concluded that
because the water wasn’t so
great and the conditions a little
poorer, the shepherd must not
really care about them at all. He
thought the shepherd was old
anyways, and didn’t understand
young, energetic sheep like him
and never wanted them to have
any real fun. Then one day, when
he snuck out, a pack of wolves
surrounded them and began to
tear into them. The shepherd
shows up with his rod and
rescues them and carries them

back home and cares for their
wounds.
After that, James has a whole
new respect for the shepherd
and learns to trust his wisdom
and how much he loves them.
The bottom line is we cannot
be blessed with the benefits of
walking with the Shepherd, until
we realize we need a shepherd.
So, just like James thought he
didn’t need a shepherd, many of
us conclude that we don’t either
in our lives.
Then somewhere along the way
we find ourselves in trouble and
surrounded by wolves who want
to devour us and we become
desperate and begin to realize
we do need someone to help us,
care for us and watch over us.
Someone who made the ultimate
sacrifice to prove His love to us.
We have all heard Psalm 23. The
Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not
want. He makes me to lie down
in green pastures. He leads
me beside the still waters. He
restores my soul.
We may not like or understand
where we are at all the time, but
it is good to know, if we will trust
in the Great Shepherd, He will
lead us, carry us and guide us
because He truly loves us.

The AIMS societies utilize the gymnastics club once every second week
on Fridays for an hour and think it’s
a great option for their adults to stay
active.
“It’s more essential to us in the winter than in the summer,” said Beverly
Roppel, programs coordinator for the
AIMS Society.
“It’s very essential. We have very
good rapport with Jumphouse and
they have been great for our agency to
utilize.”
The clients are excited every time
they come back from Jumphouse Gymnastics and cannot wait to go back.
“Everybody is always asking ‘is it
Jumphouse this week? Is it Jumphouse
this week?’” said Roppel.
She added the activities they participate in are Zumba classes put on by a
member of the AIMS society, mats and
the trampolines.

Summer fun at Jumphouse
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Jumphouse Gymnastics’ offering of a
variety of activities for youths and kids
resulted in an increase in participation
from Strathmore and surrounding areas.
Co-owner Lori Knopf says it’s a great
way for kids to keep active throughout
the summer and somewhere they can
have fun.
“What’s different for this summer is
that we have a lot more people looking
for regular classes,” said Knopf.
“A weekly class, they’re willing to
commit for the eight weeks, so people
that continue their training year round.”
She added this was a good way for
the cheer and other competitive teams
to train year round while it keeps the
younger groups busy.
In the summer, she knows that there
will be flexibility for kids to still come
in and participate if she is not there.
“It’s a little bit more flexible in the
summer because people like to know
that if I’m gone for a week or two, it’s
still reasonable to make the commitment for the other ones and just knowing we’re here for an option,” said
Knopf.
The main focus for the younger kids
is for them to stay consistent in the
summer sessions, while it is a good

“Our family serving your family!”
REALTY HORIZON

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

What started out as a simple turkey and grain farm
in Wheatland County, has
grown into a big family farming operation over the past
50 years, and earlier this
week was singled out to receive the 2015 BMO Farm
Family of the Year award for
the first time.
The local family was named
the Wheatland County representative for the prestigious
award, which is given yearly
to 17 counties in Southern
Alberta.
Located in Nightingale, just
20 miles outside of Strathmore, the Walker Farm was
established in 1960 with intentions of producing grain
and raising turkeys. While
the family has stayed true to
the original intent, and are
among a handful of farms still
raising turkeys, the family’s
three generations expanded
the business to include cattle,
sheep, broiler chickens, hens
and 1,000 acres of crops –
wheat, barley, and canola.
“It is an honour to be recognized in the community,
and I know with the younger
generation you don’t acknowledge it as much, as
I know my mom and dad
were very impressed with it,
and we were too,” said Dale
Walker, who grew up on the
farm.
“We were surprised … we
thought you’d have to be
a big family, but they were
recognizing even a smaller
farm. That was good to see.
I was really impressed that
they were recognizing the
smaller families and that it
didn’t have to be thousands

of acres.”
Since its original purchase,
Ernest and Joyce’s son Dale
and wife Michelle have taken initiative to expand the
operation in land mass and
product. With the help of one
of their children, who graduated from Olds College, the
farm was brought into the
21st century by incorporating knowledge of the latest
technology and farming techniques.
The nominees were honoured at the Farm Family
Award Ceremonies on July
6 at the Calgary Stampede,
and received a limited edition pin, rodeo tickets, free
admission to the park, professional photographs and a
personalized farm gate sign.
“There are definitely lots of
families around that qualify
for that … and there’s a lot
of good farm families, but I
think a lot of it is volunteering,” said Walker. “My wife
has volunteered with the
school, and my mom is involved with everything when
it comes to volunteering, and
she has done that for years.
I think that’s a big deal to
have the time and effort to
do that.”
The Walker family is quite
visible within Wheatland
County, with Ernest having
been a founding member of
the Rosebud Gas Co-op, his
wife receiving the Queen’s
Jubilee Medal 12 years ago
for volunteer work, and Michelle playing an active role
in school programs in the
area.
The family will continue
to work together moving
forward and plan to expand
their farm further in the future.

Local woman breaks glass ceiling
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Mountainview Colony is implementing some broadminded changes, determined to promote one of their products
more aggressively in the Canadian markets, and in doing so the farmers recently made a couple of radical moves
in hiring their first and only employee
– a woman.
The 103-member strong colony has
been actively producing their nonGMO cold pressed, non-refined canola
oil since 2010. Having managed to get
the oil on the shelves in Safeway and
Co-op, the 2,000-acre operation just
outside Strathmore had no experience
or time to spend on promoting their
goods.
After meeting mother-of-three Dianne
Hunter, who was working for Maryn International at the time and using the oil
for its lubrication properties, the colony
made a unanimous decision.
“Our weak point was our marketing,
like every colony, and we had to do
something,” said Walter Hofer, secretary
for the Mountainview Colony.
“Every other operation when you
can’t get it off the ground, you try different avenues. It’s not something Hutterites do, go out there and market and
do sales calls.”
Hunter came on board only a few
months ago, and already has her sights
set on getting the product into big box
stores such as Costco and Buy-Low.
While the colony has embraced her and
her family, the job itself is accompanied
with its own set of challenges. Although
Mountainview Canola uses no preservatives or chemicals in their processing,
Hunter said much of the marketing focuses around the re-education of canola
oil’s misconceptions and defying social
pressures about the health benefits of
the cold-pressed, non-refined oil.
“From April to now it’s been leaps
and bounds, and they’ve been so great,
they’ve helped the whole way, they’ve
been open-minded, and in every stage
they’ve welcomed that fact that they
have help,” Hunter said.
“The learning curve has definitely
been with finding out the demographic
and who you are in competition with.
Mainly it’s not fighting with farmers or
farmer’s markets, but fighting the original belief that canola is bad. In Europe
they run out of their oil every year. Oil
right now is in demand and for us to be
struggling to get this product going, I’m
very surprised by it.”
With a degree in women’s studies,
Hunter trail-blazed her way into numer-

ous male-dominated positions. Having
received an opportunity with Strathmore company SND Industrial, she became the first female machinist within
the establishment. Hunter added that
the job provided her with a foot in the
door to understanding extreme pressures, heat, and tolerances and why
certain lubricants work and other don’t.
When she stumbled across the Mountainview canola, she quickly recognized
the properties it contained for lubrication, and developed a biodegradable
saw guide oil for a company named
Maryn International.
“I’ve seen other places where woman
have worked in production environments and even when we go back as
far as World War 1, a lot of the war effort manufacturing was done by women, and it’s just that now our roles are
reversed but I was open to giving her
a try anyway,” said Dave Mackie, shop
manager at SND Industrial. “She’s the
type of person that likes to think of
new ideas. Sometimes you just have
buckle down and do the job instead of
sitting there and thinking of new ways
to do it, but in other ways if you never
think about how to do something you
never come up with a better way to do
things. She is very creative and think
outside the box type of person.”
Despite focusing on marketing and
sales, Hunter said they will also be
starting development and break into
the lubrication market. It took some
convincing, but the colony is now using their own product on many of their
machines. Mountainview Colony Oil is
currently being used by Stella’s Perogies, China Rose restaurant, and the
British Chippy. It is also being carried
in Safeway and can be locally found in
the Co-op.

July is, on average, the warmest month in most of the Northern hemisphere
(where it is the second month of summer) and the coldest month in much of the Southern
hemisphere (where it is the second month of winter). The second half of the year
commences in July. In the Southern hemisphere, July is the seasonal equivalent of
January in the Northern hemisphere.

Community garden
Brentwood Elementary School’s Grade 4 students have been working on a community garden over the past couple of
months at the Four Sisters Farm. The students planted a variety of vegetables that will be donated to the food bank at
the end of the summer. The project was made possible with the help of a grant from the Calgary Educational Partnership
Foundation.

New Kinsmen scoreboard enjoyed by all fans
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The late George Pinchbeck, a former local school
superintendent and avid baseball fan’s legacy will live
on through the brand new state-of-the-art scoreboard
recently installed in Kinsmen Park.
“It makes the kids a little more proud to be playing
at that diamond,” said Terry Desserre, the initiator of
the project and a son-in-law to Pinchbeck. “I think it
enhances the game for everybody. It’s easier for everyone to follow what’s going on with the game.”
The scoreboard has been a huge upgrade compared
to what fans and players were used to for many years
beforehand at the ballpark.
“100 per cent you could never see the score,” said
Desserre. “The only way was the little flipcharts that
were behind the back stop. You’d have to stick your
head around there or ask the score keeper what the
score was.”
Desserre’s mother-in-law, Marianne Pinchbeck,

could not believe the amount of community support
that was put into getting the scoreboard in honour of
her late husband who died a year ago.
“With how they did it, I’m just so impressed that the
town and anyone to do with it that approved it,” said
Pinchbeck.
“They figured out how everything is going to work,
I am just so pleased.”
Pinchbeck and her husband could often be seen at
the diamond both watching their grandkids and often
would watch other teams on the field because of both
of their passions for the game.
“He loved kids, he loved watching sports and I know
he would be pleased that there was something in the
community in his name,” said Pinchbeck.
She is really thrilled with the fact that you now see
the pitch counts and the score all on one board compared to the old system that was very difficult to see
during games.
“It’s really nice to have that information at your fingertips,” she said.

403-874-6486

She added that the main reason she goes to Kinsmen
Park is to watch her grandkids Scott, who is with the
midget triple A Reds, and the younger one Mitchell
who is with the U13 Reds.
Town of Strathmore Councillor Brad Walls, who was
a friend with Pinchbeck’s from their Lions Club days,
could not be more enthused to see recognition of a
guy who made such an impact in this community.
“George did a lot for this community and it’s the
least we could have done,” said Walls. “We want to really thank his family, because his family were the ones
that organized and got it set up. George was the most
community minded individual I know.
“Everything, I believe, he did was for the community
and the betterment of the community. I think he’d be
pretty honoured to have that. Knowing George, he’s
pretty humble, I’m not sure if he would’ve liked, it but
I think it’s a great way for him to be remembered.”
Between the donations and materials that were
bought, the total cost was around $20,000 to complete
the scoreboard.

Venom prepared for postseason
JUSTIN SEWARD

The Strathmore Venom junior B lacrosse team built some momentum in
the home stretch and capped the regular season off with a hard-fought 13-9
win over the Calgary Axemen on July 5
at the Strathmore Family Centre.
Captain Cody Betterton could not be
more proud of the team in their compete level and is looking forward to seeing what they can do in the postseason.
“This a huge win for us,” said Betterton. “The Axemen, we’ve been having tough games against them, and we
needed this to clinch home floor to start
playoffs and we did that tonight having
a big effort from everybody.”
This being his last junior season, he
hopes the team will transfer their experience and skills from the regular season into the playoffs.
“It’s been awesome, we have a lot of
young kids, so you see a lot of maturity
over the season,” said Betterton. “It’s (a
short season) but guys learn a lot and
we got a good bunch of guys in there
and strong leadership. I think that’s a
winning combo and going on here I’m
excited to see a lot young kids (who)
still have a lot of energy. It’ll be good to
see in the playoffs.”
He said that because the guys give it

a 110 per cent every night, it makes his
job as captain easy.
Head coach Mike Olver praised his
team for playing an all around complete
game and the players who stepped up
when called upon.
“Austin (Allen), our goalie, played
phenomenal today, he was huge,” said
Olver. “Our goal scorers, did what they
needed to do. Our goal now, win one
round of the playoffs and then we’ll see
where that goes.”
Olver is thrilled to have his team back
in the playoffs after a year absence and
will ride the momentum from beating a
tough Axemen squad.
When the Axemen started to become
undisciplined in the game, the Venom
were able to take advantage, and Olver
stated that it will be key to stay disciplined in the playoffs if they are to stay
successful.
“We have to stay out of the penalty
box,” said Olver. “Then we can run with
almost any team five-on-five. When
you’re down a man in lacrosse, these
other teams are good.”
With fourth place locked up, the Venom will tangle with the Red Deer Renegades in a best-of-three series starting
July 10 in Strathmore. Game 2 will be
July 11 in Red Deer, and Game 3, if necessary, will be in Strathmore the following day.

CFR Chemicals Bisons power forward and Regina Pats prospect, Trygve
Many Guns has acquired a trait that is
very rarely heard of at the age of 16
years old.
That trait is his ability to use his 6’3”,
252-pound frame to motor past his opponents and create a path to the net.
His former head coach Dan MacDonald thought he made really big strides
in adjusting to the speed of the game,
and that is what the Pats will be looking for in him if he were to make the
team.
“He improved his speed to turn the
game in terms of understanding how
to play the puck quicker and go to the
net better and all the things that make
him a very good hockey player,” said
MacDonald.
He added that what distinguished
Many Guns from most other players in
the league was his size, which resulted
in his opponents having a difficult time
moving him off the puck.
“He would always keep the puck,
hold it and do what he wanted with it
and make the decision ‘ok I can keep
it and I go get it and fight for it,’ ” said
MacDonald. “That’s really the secret for
him is that he has to keep going to the
net and being that big presence the
way he does, he’s very effective.”
According to MacDonald, if Many
Guns were to be a regular in the Pats
line-up next season, he has to put more
focus into developing more power into
his skating stride and building it to a
respectable level.
“It’s come easy for him up to this

point in time because he was bigger
and stronger than the guys that he was
playing with,” said McDonald. “He’s got
to bend his knees a little more, push
wider and longer. When he does that,
he really improved in that area of his
skating and that’s what going to keep
him going.”
The Gleichen native knows that hard
work and dedication in the off-season
will allow him to succeed at the next
level.
“We practiced every day, so that
helped to learn what my strengths were
and the coach telling me what to do to
make me better,” said Many Guns.
He saw a lot of improvement in some
areas more than others by practicing
that much in a week.
“I wasn’t doing what I usually did
and I was changing it up a bit, I was
too predictable at the beginning of the
year,” said Many Guns. “As the season went on, I switched my style and
played a bigger game, hit more, used
my body (and) passed more.”
He added that the Pats want him to
lose about 15 pounds or more and get
quicker on his feet.
Regina Pats director of scouting, Dale
McMullin, said that the onus will be on
Many Guns to get in better shape, but
aside from that, he has the potential to
crack the line-up next season.
“He’s a young player that stands the
opportunity to play in Regina,” said McMullin. “He’s a boy in a man’s body. For

Cup with the Bisons in April. The power forward is

Hockey League.

his size, he carries himself pretty well
out there, his conditioning has to get a
little better.”
McMullin added that if they can get
him into the organization, and with the
help of the coaching and training staff,
he could turn into something pretty
special in the future.
“All these other guys have to train
hard too,” said McMullin. “There’s nothing given to the young guys. It’s a great
place to play, and if he does his part,
he’s got an opportunity in front of him
to be developed in Regina and who
knows, maybe if he’s capable on his
part to make another step.”
The Strathmore U12
Spurs put up a fight
against the Calgary
White Eagles during
Tier 5 play on July 5
at the Ranch soccer
fields. The Spurs ultimately fell 5-1 in the
game.

Spurs fall to Eagles
JUSTIN SEWARD

Despite a tough 5-1 loss to the Calgary White Eagles, the Strathmore U12
Spurs battled hard on the pitch.
After starting the season with three
straight losses, the boys reeled off consecutive wins and were really looking
forward to facing the White Eagles,
who provided them with some great
competition.
Head coach Dan Wilchowy knew it
wasn’t going to be an easy feat playing

bench.
“Because we played the top team, we
knew we were in for a bit of a battle,”
said Wilchowy. “We have no spares, so
they gave it their all.”
He felt that his team has found chemistry amongst each other as the season
has worn on, believing that it led to
their success.
“We found strength of the different
players and capitalized on that,” said
Wilchowy.
“I think we’re in a good division for
us. It challenges us and we’re kind of
holding our own.”

U14 Thunder placed fourth
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Strathmore Thunder U14 girls fastpitch team took
provincials by storm and placed fourth overall.
With early success in the Calgary event from July 3-5, the
team dominated the opener. Starting with an 18-3 victory
over St. Albert, they followed up with a 9-4 win over Wetaskiwin.
While the players faced defeat against the Clive Red Sox,
they rebounded 13-1 against Red Deer in the final round
robin game.
“In the games we won, we played well, our defense was
playing really well,” said head coach Vince Olson. “The girls
were hitting the bats pretty good, it was a lot of fun.”
In the game the team lost, they scored early but could not
seem to find their offensive touch after that and watched the
other team come back in the semi-finals.
“We scored four runs in the first inning and couldn’t score
anymore, the other team got six on us,” said Olson.

Upon completing the round robin, the Thunder ended
up placing second in their pool and made a semi-finals appearance where they drew Westaskiwin again, who played a
tighter, defensive game in what turned out to be a pitchers’
duel.
“It was tight, it was exciting,” said Olson. “The pitching
was great on both teams and the defense was great on both
teams. In the end, they were the home team and they got the
one run in extra innings.”
After the semi-final loss, the team played for bronze
against Calgary-based West Valley where they fell short in
the end of medalling.
The girls found the season a real eye-opener as they faced
better pitching and defense, and now know what needs to
be done to become better for next year.
“I think what defined us is our youth,” said Olson. “We
made mistakes that young players make at that level, so you
chalk that up to learning. Hopefully next year, those one
innings that you have that all the mistakes, you get rid of
them.”

55 Plus games experienced influx of participants
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

With less than a week to go before Strathmore hosts the
Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games, the zone results reveal an
influx in participation among local seniors has spiked to
more than 600 per cent of the norm – partially the result of
the event being held locally this year.
Twenty-five seniors, aged 55 and up, that are competing
in a variety of activities are residents of Strathmore, Carseland and Lyalta. Among the athletes is 66-year-old competitive swimmer Susan Lust, who is the only female from the
area to participate in the category. Despite having swum for
Medicine Hat from 1962 to 1965, the former Alberta Marlin
Aquatic Club member hasn’t swam competitively in over 40
years. The announcement of the games heading to Strathmore provided the motivation needed for Lust to get back
into the pool.
“I’m determined to do this for me,” said Lust. “It’s been a
really good opportunity to get back into it again and I’m still
competitive. I’ll be 70 in two-and-a-half years and I get into
the water and I want to win. I really want to make Strathmore proud, that’s probably the biggest thing.”
Lust began training in March and will take on other zone
qualifiers in the 50 meter back, 50 meter breast, 50 meter
free, and the 100 meter freestyle. She added training for the
event has brought back many valuable memories. To fuel
those memories, two teammates from the AMAC team of ’64
will be cheering her on from the sidelines.
As part of an initiative to increase participation, the game’s
Board Chair Donalda Ladene’s goal was to have the games
in Strathmore and encourage participation in zone playoffs.
“It’s really exciting, because Zone 2 participation, particularly our area has generally been quite low, so it’s really nice
to see the increase,” said Colleen Huber, games manager for
the Strathmore 2015 Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games. “We
visited all of the homes around Strathmore … and posted a
lot of information at different areas across town.”

Such advertising attracted 58-year-old Strathmore resident
Theo Owel, who qualified for running and biking at zones.
With limitations of one category per participant, Owel decided on running – an astute decision for the athlete who
just completed the Stampede Road Race half marathon.
Owel, who will run 3,000 meters, 1,500 meters, and 800
meters, is planning on getting in some practice runs around
the track before the events are launched. However, it was
the proximity of the games that played an active motivator
for Owel to participate.
“I have been running and cycling for decades,” said Owel.
“I think it’ll be really interesting in terms of how many participants are there and whether or not the Town of Strathmore and the community have done enough to drum up
some interest. I’m looking forward to it. I think it’ll be a
good event for the town.”
The games provide seniors with an opportunity to show
off their skills through 17 different categories. Such options include the traditional competitive events of athletics,
slo-pitch, tennis, and golf, but also feature arts and crafts,
creative writing, cribbage, military whist and pickleball to
name a few.
Every two years a community within Alberta has the
chance to be awarded the bid to host the winter or summer
games. Strathmore won the bid two years ago. As Strathmore gears up to host the 35th Alberta 55 Plus Summer
Games, the public can expect much entertainment next
week, with opening ceremonies including a torch relay and
various musical talents.
However, for Lust, the games are about more than just
promoting health to the 1,200 expected participants.
“I think, these seniors, the one thing they have in common
is they want to feel alive,” she said. “They want to have fun
and go forward and live long and be healthy and happy.
Whether they play cards or whether they swim, or play bocce, that shows spirit and that’s what people need.”
The Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games will take place from
July 16-19.

1520 sq. ft. fully developed home.
Total five bed, two full bath. Significant renos.
Steel roof, hardy board siding, newer kitchen,
flooring. Large main bathroom also re-done.
Priced to sell. mlsc4018693

$240,000

With all that is going on in the world today the Bank of Canada has lowered its prime lending
rate several times consecuitively. What does this mean for the citizens of Strathmore? Well
now is a great time to buy a new home. When negotiating the purchase price of your new
home people don’t often think about what the real cost of the home is because most people
are so focused on the purchase price they forget about the price to finance. First time home
buyers – the time is now – don’t wait. In todays low interest market the overall price of the
home is effectively reduced by the interest rate itself. Call me today and get preapproved. I will
let you know how much you can afford so that you can go out house hunting
Today is also a great day to refinance your existing home. Even with a
prepayment penalty you can save thousands of dollars off of your mortgage
by refinancing in todays super low interest rate market. Lock in now for
new lower rate and save money. Call me today you’ll be glad you did
