Hidden Valley Golf Resort Residents were allowed to bus into their cabin sites on Sunday, July 7 to see the damage the floods have done. “Everyone was pretty tearful and emotional,” said Resort Manager Dick Burgess. “But it helped them get a better idea of what we have been telling them.” Burgess said Health and Safety inspectors had reviewed the site last week and classified it as highly dangerous with potential contaminants hazardous to health. There are serious safety issues resulting from the construction-related damages and flood debris in all areas of the resort. “The resort looks a lot like a war zone. There are cottages and sheds strewn all over the place. It is truly devastation. The neighbour’s garage was rammed into our garage and our garage has either wiped out the deck and the hot tub, or become an extra room on the cottage. Only time will tell,” said homeowner Earl Best about what can be done. The Homeowners executive states that RCMP along with Health Canada and the Fire Chief from the Siksika Nation cannot release access to the Resort until Health Canada has made specific tests to ensure the safety of all who enter, which is expected to take several weeks. Until approval is given hands are tied and access is blocked. Neither insurance adjusters nor residents are allowed to enter their home or remove any items from their home or property due to contamination concerns. Contamination concerns also extend to items removed or touched, so items cannot be taken to another location. Burgess said there are about 30 residents that utilize the resort as their primary home. “Yesterday gave some of them a bit of closure, but we are going step by step and day by day,” said Burgess. There are three to four feet of silt in places. Over 15 pumps are being employed to pumping out pockets of water and roadwork has begun to ensure it is safe for the buses. Arborist crews were attempting to take care of some dangerous trees that may fall on the route. The Flood Advisory Team was in again assessing more of the cost of the damage to the infrastructure. Lions help through food
Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Every year Carseland Aggie Days grows a little bit bigger and a little bit better. A big part of the growth and success is the based on the support from the community as a whole. There are always activities for the kids, a car show, tractor pulls and some evening events just for the parents. LDS Consulting has a shop in Carseland. Since 2009 they have donated buns, hamburgers and drinks and staff time for the BBQ and this year the lunch also helped flood relief victims. “We believe that we have been fortunate during the past 13 years while running our business and feel that giving back to the community is the right thing to do considering our circumstances,” said Lisa Sturm of LDS Consulting. “We feel that in conjunction with the Lions Club the donations go to great causes wherever help is required. Quite simply, we enjoy doing it and the people we meet are inspiring.” “This year we put a bucket up that said donations for flood relief. The donation bucket was just over $1,000, so that was really impressive,” said Carseland Lions President Bert Dunsbergen. There was $1,034 raised from the BBQ, $5,000 raised from the sale of beef roasts, and there was a prize giveaway of $1,000 that was won by Strathmore Motor Products (SMP), who then donated the money back to flood relief. “These things happen, and we like to be there to help,” said SMP owner Hal Lust. Dunsbergen and the Carseland Lions wanted to thank everyone who helped them raise just over $6,000, which will be dispersed to flood zones. Approximately $2,000 will go to the Foothills Lions for the Bragg Creek Black Diamond - Turner Valley area. High River and other affected areas will also see a portion of the funds.

On July 7, residents of Hidden Valley Golf Resort located about 65 kilometres southeast of Strathmore, were able to get their first glimpse of damage at the resort caused by flooding in June. Cabin owners met at the Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park where they were loaded onto buses and driven, under escort, through the resort. Due to the dangerous conditions no one was allowed to leave their bus but the view from the bus gave them a clear understanding of the devastation left by the floodwaters. The resort, located on Siksika Nation land leased by cabin owners, was made up 305 cabins, some of which served as primary residences. The resort has existed for 39 years but amid controversial lease negotiations with the Siksika Nation, and now extensive flood damage, the future of the resort is unclear. Doug Taylor Photos

Some homeowners secured the $1,250 disaster funding, but no other assurances or help has been extended by government. “It would be nice to have a Premier who believed her word is her bond, but that not the case,” said Best. The residents are meeting with on July 9 in Milo Community Hall with MLA Jason Hale and other government officials to try and get some concrete answers.

Friends of Wyndham
Shannon LeClair Times Reporter The true western spirit has shone through in the past few weeks as strangers have lent their time to help clean up areas affected by the floods. That spirit has held fast and true in the Carseland area after Wyndham was severely affected. A call for help went out for the Parkside Store on June 25 after they realized the damage was just too much to fix on their own. Global Training Centre was just one of the groups who went out to answer that call, and they haven’t stopped lending a hand since. “Global Training Centre started the ‘Friends of Wyndham’ because we saw firsthand the need for assistance in Wyndham and how these families had been overlooked in the flood relief efforts,” said Angela Beemer Editing Department Supervisor with Global Training. “This area was hit very hard. There was damage to all the properties in the valley, the campgrounds and businesses including the Parkside Store on the campground and the Blue Sky Gardens greenhouse. Water was above our heads in this area and when it receded it left a lot of mud and devastation behind.” One of the Global Training staff members, Jaymee Farthing, whose parents own the Parkside Store, asked her colleagues for help. “While down there we noticed all the other poor folks working alone to try and clean up their property,” said Beemer. “The devastation was heart breaking.” Beemer said Global Training’s Chief Executive Officer Debbie Shelley is an extremely passionate and caring woman. Upon seeing the devastation she committed the training centre’s time and resources to help the families. There have been 40 employees who have been spending their time over the past few weeks in Wyndham helping where they can. They have gone from property to property digging out mud, using equipment to clean the land, hauling garbage, tearing out drywall and insulation, power washing and much more. “We have been very appreciative of the help we have also received from fellow citizens in the area coming down and asking what they can do to help. We have also had help from Rocking Horse Energy Services and the Strathmore Fire Department,” said Beemer. There has been a Facebook page, ‘Friends of Wyndham’ created to help spread awareness about the cleanup efforts, while also looking for more volunteers. “We are still looking for some volunteers to help clean up Penny Reiterer’s house and Parkside Campground. Once we are done there we will be on to Phase Two,” said Beemer. “This is where we will be sending out a cry to the community asking for tradesmen to volunteer and help rebuild these families lives. We are in need of contractors, electricians, plumbers, HVAC/Furnace, well servicing, drywallers, painters et cetera. “We are hoping that we will have enough volunteers in the trades to spread the work out and get this done quickly. These people cannot live in their homes or run their businesses until their homes and properties have been rebuilt.” Beemer said that Global Training Centre will continue to coordinate the efforts. They are also accepting monetary donations which will be given out to the families equally. “We want to send out a big thank you to our amazing community for stepping up and helping out these families. We have been able to get so much accomplished because of so many giving people,” said Beemer. Anyone wishing to help out in any way can call Global Training Centre at 403-934-5046 or visit their website www.globaltrainingcentre.com.

Flood relief efforts ongoing
Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Almost three weeks after the rivers crested and flooded communities across the southern part of the province, Siksika Nation is still in a state of local emergency. Siksika has seen approximately 170 homes in six communities affected by floodwaters that swelled on June 21. “Residents are still being asked to stay out of their damaged homes but were bused out to the communities… to survey the damage. Damage to the homes has been assessed and residents will be notified of the status of their home during the tour. Storage units will be brought into the damaged communities shortly so clean up can begin and recovered items can be stored,” said Siksika Nation Public Relations Representative Wesley Water Chief in a press release. Since the floods, some of the evacuees have been camping on higher ground overlooking their homes. Others have been taken in by relatives or have been staying in hotels in surrounding areas. “The Deerfoot Sportsplex has also been turned into a reception centre where those displaced can find a place to sleep, take a shower, get something to eat and get information,” said Water Chief. Water Chief said that Premier Alison Redford made a visit to the reception centre on Tuesday ( July 2). She surveyed some of the affected communities and was notified of Siksika’s plans to assist evacuees by bringing in ATCO trailers for short term housing. Mobile homes not used in the Slave Lake fire disaster will also be brought in to meet housing demand. Siksika is still under a boil water advisory, and will remain so until cleared by the Environmental Health Officer. There is a water distribution centre set up where water is available for residents until the ban is lifted. On July 9 cleanup began at the north camp area, and cleanup efforts are scheduled to move east daily. The donations department is in need of tarps, tents, new shoes of all sizes, new socks of all sizes, new underwear in all sizes, raincoats and generators. At this time no other donations are being requested other than financial donations to the Siksika Nation Disaster Relief Fund to help meet the ongoing needs of the evacuees. Anyone wishing to help out, or looking for more information can call 403734-5315.

RECYCLE FACILITY UPDATE
As a result of the restructuring of the Recycle Facility, which was approved by Council in 2012, users will notice substantial changes and construction at the facility over the next couple of months. As part of this restructuring the new operator will be installing fences, relocating bins and recyclable containment units. Users of the facility are asked to consult with recycle assistants for appropriate placement of recycle materials and to minimize the duration of their use of the facility due to the restricted amount of space for parking. The structure of the Recycle Facility has also changed not only to accommodate the construction but to provide a safe and effective use of space for all users. Users are requested to take time to familiarize themselves with the new layout and location of bins in a safe manner. Operations of the new structure of the facility will be reviewed periodically to ensure operational effectiveness and safety for all users. The Town of Strathmore thanks all users for their patience during this construction

Capsule Comments
Drug resistance is one of the most serious problems developing in healthcare now and into the future. Much of this is due to the overuse of antibiotic drugs in some countries where people expect a pill for every ill they see the doctor about. Often this isn’t needed. Antibiotics are to be used only for true infections. Don’t feel bad if you demand a smoke-free hotel room when you travel. The idea of thirdhand smoke is a real one. The term was coined a few years ago and refers to the residue that smoking leaves on carpets, sofas, walls and clothing. It doesn’t go away easily. The danger is much smaller than secondhand smoke but the exposures are longer. How can you discourage mosquitos from biting? Avoid fragrant soaps and body lotions; avoid bright, floral colours and stick to the dull ones; cover as much of your body as comfortably possible...less area to bite; get rid of body sweat...mosquitos like that. Signing up to be an organ-donor makes good business sense for saving healthcare dollars. For example, it costs over $70,000 per year to maintain one person on kidney dialysis. The initial cost of a kidney transplant is nearly $100,000 then follow-up treatment and medication costs under $22,500 yearly. In the long run, organ transplant saves a lot of money. Have you signed up to be a donor? The people who work in our pharmacy are our greatest asset. Let one of them serve you soon.

Sparks fly at council over procedural issues
Shannon LeClair Times Reporter One Town councillor voiced his concerns at the regular Town council meeting held July 3, after proper procedure wasn’t followed for donating funds. Administration had received a request to provide a donation of $1,000 towards a dinner to be provided to High River residents. It was put to a straw vote, the cheque was written, but voted approval to donate the funds was not held until the July 3 meeting. “I feel that the item on the agenda is moot being that the cheque has already been written and the money has already been spent. The problem arising here is that a councillor has bypassed our local town bylaws and shown blatant disregard for the Municipal Government Act,” said Councillor Earl Best. Best said the first thing done wrong was when the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) was bypassed and the request went directly to the administration staff. He said the second problem was having the Deputy CAO get a cheque cut without a motion from council authorizing it or voting on it. Best feels it is disrespectful to council and administration. He felt a special meeting should have been called, which would have taken 24 hours before it could take place, or an emergency meeting was called which would have taken no time to put together. “It would have had this matter before council with a motion and a vote that would have alleviated this conundrum, it’s for that reason your worship that at this time I would ask for Councillor Sobol resign his position from council and that this motion be dismissed as moot as the cheque has already been written and the money spent,” said Best. Mayor Steve Grajczyk said when Brooks had been faced with the E-Coli outbreak council did that same thing, a cheque was issued and a motion was made after the fact, which he said Best did vote on. Grajczyk said he thinks they can trust the decision about the $1,000 when they all know council is going to vote for it anyway. “I don’t disagree, technically you’re very right and it is an issue, but it’s done let’s work together on it and move forward,” said Grajczyk. Sobol was disappointed to hear the comments, but did say he will not be tendering his resignation. He read from a prepared statement outlining his position on requesting the funds. Sobol also said he did consult with the CAO and Deputy CAO and the Mayor, and that he did ask for a special meeting. “As a councillor, my job is to represent the members of my community. I have little doubt that the vast majority of our citizens feel extremely fortunate to have dodged a bullet, so to speak. Having avoided the terrible floods in our town does not, however, relieve some of the need to help or to deal with, in some cases, tremendous feelings of sorrow and sympathy. It is with those thoughts in mind that I felt that action, rather than talk and rhetoric, was needed,” said Sobol. “The two projects that I requested Council approval were not focused on re-building damaged property. They were, instead, focused on helping our residents help others and to ensure our residents had the means to focus their support. “Feed High River is a project started by the people of this community. Their coordinator is Koreann Bland, a responsible, mature and respected leader in our community. I am closely involved with this project and can attest to everyone that the thousand dollars provided by our municipality will be well spent and will make a difference in peoples’ lives. The money was needed immediately so that the enormous task of preparation could get started.” Sobol continued on to say he will make no apologies for his actions. “As far as your comments that you read Councillor Best I think the word disrespectful is too strong let alone using the word resignation for what Councillor Sobol tried to do to help people,” said Councillor Pat Fule. “If it means we can get money to help people who need it after a flood like that, that hit High River I don’t disagree with what we did, and I don’t disagree with what Councillor Sobol brought forward. You can wrap around policies all you want, but that doesn’t help people who are suffering.” “We needed it so badly that it has been sitting there doing nothing for all this time?” said Best. The money was not used until July 4 when the dinner was held, though initially the plan was to have the dinner on June 29. Because evacuated residents had not been allowed back to their homes by that date, the dinner was postponed. “I want the public to know too that we don’t just do this willy-nilly where we do these straw votes and decide on things like this, but this was a unique situation, we thought the money was going to be needed…last Saturday,” said Fule. “So we did agree to it using a straw pull we didn’t call an emergency meeting, we decided to do it the fastest way we could and if I had to do it again I’d do it again.” Grajczyk said the cost of calling an emergency meeting would have been $500. “I just want to make it clear, I am not against what we’re doing here with this $1,000 and I am certainly not against donating it for this specific purpose it’s obviously needed,” sadi Best. “The devastation that’s happened around Southern Alberta is certainly exactly that, devastation what has happened in High River is nothing short of colossal damage, it’s hard to even explain. I am certainly not against this, what I am against is the procedure.” A motion was made by Councillor John Rempel to approve the donation of $1,000 with the funds drawn from the Financial Stabilization Reserve.

With the growing population of seniors in Strathmore and the surrounding communities, the need for affordable seniors housing and care services had been recognized for several years. The concept was to offer housing and care service options in the same location.

geCare purchased the 10-acre parcel of land on 140 Cambridge Glen Drive in 2008 and began the design of Sagewood Seniors Community. After going through the Land Use change process, construction for Phase 1 was started in 2009. Phase 1 consists of 60 units of supportive living (with 20 memory care units) as well as 42 affordable independent apartments for seniors. The supportive living units are for seniors who require assistance with activities of daily living and personal care. The monthly rent for supportive living is set by the Province of Alberta and is currently $1785 per month which includes room, meals, housekeeping, recreational and social activies as well as maintenance and other costs. Amenities in the facility include a commercial kitchen, dining rooms, a bistro, several lounge areas, recreation room, a wellness club that has a fitness room, spa, hair salon as well as Shaw open internet access in all common areas. Attention has been paid to the design of the building with seniors in mind and includes wide hallways, handrails, wheelchair accessible shower in each suite and emerency-call system. The facility is staffed 24-hours a day. The seniors’ independent self-contained apartments have a 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom floor plans, including 9 barrier free suites. The seniors living in the apartments have access to all the common amenities and services on site, allowing

them to ‘live in place’. If these residents would rather not cook some days, they are able to purchase and have their meal in the main dining room just as you would in a restaurant. They can access housekeeping or laundry services if and when needed on a pay for service basis. The monthly rent for 1-bedroom is $658 and for 2-bedroom is $774. Phase one is about 90,000 square feet, three storey building with brick and vinyl siding exterior. The grounds are professionally landscaped with courtyard, walking trails, benches, street lights and surface parking. Phase 2 of the Facility consisting of 70 additional supportive living units, and 35 long-term care beds was started in June 2012 and is expected to open in October, 2013. Phase 2 offers a Child Day Care as well as an Adult Day Support Program. These programs allow for life-enhancing intergenerational programming. Once phase 2 is opened the Facility will provide a full spectrum of care from independent living, supportive living to long-term care all under one roof. The final phase of the project is building 20 seniors’ bunglows. These are designed for independent seniors. The units vary in size from 1100 sq.ft to 1300 sq.ft. This phase will be condominiumized and will be for sale. Once fully completed Sagewood will employ more than 100 care and support staff as well as offer 227 units of Seniors Housing options for Strathmore.

ntil about 15 years ago, care and housing for the elderly— especially frail elderly needing facility based care was provided in traditional, institutional nursing homes. The approaches to care and the physical environment did not support providing personalized care. More recently, however, a new industry perspective has brought about significant change in both models of care and the way physical environments support staff, residents, and family of residents. AgeCare is working towards creating a culture of aging that supports the care of elders in settings where individual voices are heard and individual choices are respected. We are constantly reviewing evidencebased design criteria for residential care environments, leading to building of new facilities incorporating clientcentered care. New facilities are now part of larger seniors’ community that includes different housing and care options allowing seniors to age in place as they become more frail, couples with different care needs are able to live together. Social and recreational programs are enhanced by including spaces such as child day care, adult day center, wellness center, library, and bistro. Evidence based design concepts is evidenced by:

• The living environment is designed to be a home rather than an institution • Close relationships exist between resident, family members and staff • Facilities are build within new residential sub-divisions or near regional shopping centers, allowing the residents be part of the larger community

Annexation woes

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Council has promised to look into concerns raised by Mr. and Mrs. Simonin, who live on Oxbow Road. The couple spoke to council regarding speeding issues, which occur most frequently between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. People are speeding past their property constantly and to the point of dangerous levels on daily basis, and the couple says there has not been any enforcement during the hour they are most concerned about. Another point brought up by the couple is that they feel like they are not getting the same services as other town residents since the annexation. The couple stated that they have had to come to the town to ask to get the road graded and the grass mowed in the ditches. They wanted to know what they have to do in order to see some changes. Council did express concern about the issues raised and will be looking into the problems presented to see why things are not happening, and what solution there may be.

Kinsmen Park amendments A public hearing was held at the July 3 regular town council meeting to discuss land use amendments to Kinsmen Park. The matter was brought forward to discuss changing the current designations for the area. The Town, with the intent to subdivide and sell a portion, purchased the land in 2011. The sale of the 1.3 acres would help offset the cost of the land purchase and the remaining 9.25 acres will be rezoned as P1 and dedicated as municipal reserve. Flood relief fundraiser A motion was made and approved at council to approve the purchase of 1,000 pins in the amount of $933 plus GST. The flood relief pins are selling for $5 each, and all funds will go into the Red Cross Southern Alberta Flood Relief Fund. The funds to purchase the pins came from the Financial Stabilization Reserve.

The chamber moves forward
Joyce Bazant Strathmore & District Chamber of Commerce The Strathmore & District Chamber of Commerce (“SDCC”) Board, together with newly elected Acting President Joyce Bazant, is pleased to announce the appointment of Cristina Dixon to the position of Administrative Assistant. The SDCC office is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is located at Bay A1, 510 Hwy #1, Country Lane Mall. The board encourages anyone to contact the chamber office at 403-901-3175 or drop in to meet Cristina with suggestions for activities or events. The board thanks past Executive Director, Lin Walker, for all her volunteer time and help in training Cristina. We wish Lin and her husband, Jamie, all the best in their new home in Ontario. The chamber is currently busy organizing the Heritage Day Parade to be held on Saturday, Aug. 3 beginning at 9 a.m. Registration information is available on our website at strathmoredistrictchamber.com. The board appreciates the time that Marcy Field, of Mountain Lion Leadership, a chamber member, is donating in organizing the Heritage Day Parade, as well as, working with the SDCC website after it was regrettably hacked. In response to the recent comment “… where was the Chamber when SpringFest and Farmers’ Market moved from downtown …”, Bazant says she is unaware of why these events moved from the town core. She believes that the Farmers’ Market relocation was a business decision made by their board in the best interest of their members. The chamber has no input as to where the Farmers’ Market or any other business can locate within the Town of Strathmore. Current chamber membership stands 113 members. Although the majority of members are located outside of the downtown core, the board recognizes the importance of having a strong downtown and is committed to encouraging downtown business activity. Focusing on its vision of ‘Empowering members to build a prosperous future for all generations,’ the chamber is working with current members and businesses to that end. The Strathmore and District Chamber of Commerce works to support and represent businesses by building a positive economic environment through advocacy, promotion, education and networking opportunities. More information about the chamber is available at its website at www. strathmoredistrictchamber.com.

Pushing back the flood waters
Kevin Sorenson, M.P., Crowfoot Parliamentary Report Although the recent flood waters directly affected a very small area in our riding of Crowfoot, our hearts and prayers go out to the folks in Calgary and surrounding areas for the challenges they are confronting. Many constituents in our riding are feeling the effects of the flood. Many of us have friends and family in Calgary that were directly affected and many constituents work in Calgary or in the path of the flood. The Province of Alberta is in charge of the coordination of disaster response and relief and after an event, the province seeks reimbursement from the Government of Canada. The Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements provides financial support to provincial and territorial governments to help them respond and recover from natural disasters. We know that this process can take years. The federal government paid $129-million in costs for the Alberta flood of 2005, and the final reimbursement cheque arrived this past April. Premier Redford has already estimated that the costs will be in the billions of dollars. Late last month, in Drumheller (where some residents on the outskirts of town were evacuated), I met with Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Minister Vic Toews who was in our province to inspect the flood damage. “The federal government is committed to doing whatever it can to assist Albertans in rebuilding their communities,” he said. Immigration Minister Jason Kenney has been a key federal spokesman on the scene throughout the crisis, meeting with residents, workers, local officials and keeping the media up to date with information on emergency response procedures. He has advised us that businesses will have a few months longer to file their tax returns, temporary workers will be able to retain their status until paperwork is sorted out, and anyone affected by the flood who has been out of work for five days will be eligible for Employment Insurance. Prime Minister Stephen Harper saw first-hand the impact of the damage in Calgary. The Canadian Armed Forces dispatched 1,300 troops, helicopters, trucks and other vehicles to assist with evacuation, search and rescue and logistics. Our RCMP detachments have also been working very hard. “The people of Central and Southern Alberta are showing tremendous strength, courage and resolve in their reaction to the devastating floods in the Alberta regions,” said Prime Minister Harper. “The federal government is taking swift action to help municipal and provincial authorities meet the needs of those affected. Members of the RCMP and the Canadian Armed Forces are already on the ground helping with search and rescue, evacuation and other logistics and our Government stands ready to provide all the support required.” The Prime Minister also saluted the amazing cooperation, teamwork and humanity being displayed during these very difficult circumstances. Throughout the Canada Day weekend I attended events, celebrations and parades. I also spoke at Rosebud, Alberta’s 130 Anniversary. Rosebud is one of the oldest pioneer communities in Alberta. It was inspirational to think that we, and generations of our ancestors, have been building our local towns, villages and communities for over a century. The trials and tribulations we are currently confronting are not unlike the ones that previous generations overcame. Let’s all work to try and live up to our predecessors legacy of success, cooperation and determination. Harper government extends deadline on “Call for Proposals”
From the Offices of Kevin Sorenson For Projects Led and Inspired by Seniors Kevin Sorenson, Member of Parliament for Crowfoot, is pleased with the extension to July 19, for submission by local seniors to apply for federal government funding through the New Horizons for Seniors Program. Sorenson says, “the Call for Proposals in Alberta has been extended by two weeks in response to significant damages caused by the recent flooding. Eligible organizations in Alberta now have until July 19 to submit applications for New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP) funding. “We have been successful in the past securing federal funding under this program for our local senior citizens and many seniors in all parts of our large riding benefit. There is now some extra time to prepare your ideas that will stimulate senior citizen participation and fill out the application.” Applications should be submitted before July 20, 2013 at www.seniors.gc.ca. Sorenson concludes, “organizations may receive up to $25,000 in grant funding per year on projects that focus on one or more of the following objectives: volunteering, mentoring, expanding awareness of elder abuse, social participation and capital assistance. We have many organizations dedicated to helping seniors maintain a high quality of life and continue to be active, participating members of our communities – let’s utilize the help available from our government.”

Summer camp begins
The Youth Club of Strathmore Summer Camp has begun. Part of the Club’s mandate is to give back to the community. On their first week, the group collected numerous food items along with $70, which will be donated to the Alberta Flood Relief for High River and our local food bank to assist those High River residents that are staying within our community.

Girls, girls, girls!
Pat Fule Fule for Thought Now that I have your attention, this article is about the joys, sorrows, and trials of raising teenaged girls! In fact, it specifically deals with the experiences I’ve endured (had?) with my “angelic” daughter Breanne. If you’ve never met Breanne she’s kind of like a Tootsie Pop … she’s got a tougher exterior shell, but she’s soft and sweet inside. When she was a baby, she could be a fussy car rider. We often went to our hometown Canmore on weekends to visit relatives. On these trips, Breanne was a quiet angel for about the distance to Calgary. Now if you remember, “way back when” I told Debbie I wasn’t not all that sure about fatherhood. I can be very patient with other peoples’ kids … not so much my own. So, I was ready for any outburst … I packed extra bottles of formula and juice! As soon as I heard some fussing, I’d reach back with a fully loaded bottle and soon, she’d drunk herself back to sleep. I know, I know, the juice bottle’s not supposed to stay in their mouths too long … we took it out when she was back to a deep sleep. The only problem was when we got to Canmore two hours later, Bree had the biggest, heaviest diaper in Alberta (talk about “Baby’s got back!” (song reference))! As a little girl, she was a tough nut to crack. If she got in trouble, or something hurt her, she rarely cried. She’d put on a stoic, stone-cold face and meet the trouble that way. In fact, once as an eight year old, her punishment was “grounding” to her room while the rest of us “hammed” it up with pop, popcorn, and “The Nutty Professor!” The three of us made it sound like the funniest, best night ever. She snuck out of her room every so often, but her shadow gave her away, and back to “solitary” she went! She’s now 22, and she STILL remembers that evening, so it must have had a strong impact. The ironic thing now, is that she and her pals often “ground” me from my ‘Man Cave’ to watch “The Bachelorette” or “Magic Mike!” Years ago, my dad died suddenly of a heart attack, and Breanne didn’t cry. She loved “Poppa Joe,” and he worshipped her and Brennen. He was always getting them treats, taking them to feed the ducks, and he even bought a bunk bed for them! She faced his death with the face of a tough little girl, again very stoic and serious. It wasn’t until 2.5 months later when one evening, we heard hysterical crying and sobbing. We ran to her room and she sat on her bed shaking with tears, saying, “I miss Poppa Joe!” We don’t know if it was the shock at first, or that she bottled up her grief, but it released that night, and she cried with all her heart. Our house was not a place where we wanted school teens to party. The kids were told that as teachers, we couldn’t have students drinking in our home. Sadly, their 20’s hit, and our house has become the pre-drinking spot. That’s where the “20 somethings” save money by drinking at a house before the bar, so they can save money! We’ve come to know many of both kids’ friends, and I’ve usually been the D.D. on New Year’s Eve. Their friends are great, and Breanne even has two little dainty, hobbit-like friends, named Shelby and Sam. They’re both petite young ladies, who take “no crap” from anyone. Poor Shelby once had her shoe put on the ceiling fan blade by my son, and she could only watch, as it spun around and around on the fan’s blade! Last Christmas, I had watched a Jamie Oliver Yuletide show where he showed a drink where you’d have a jigger of Tequila (bad news to begin with) and add a teaspoon of pomegranate berries. I thought it was great; Bree screamed and cried like, well … a girl. Danielle ran to the bathroom, but Sam was the only one of the girls to tough it out. She “manned up” so to speak! When my son and daughter’s friends come over, they know they’re welcome … one even comes through the back gate and into the kitchen! There’s always a lot of laughter, teasing, and sarcasm flying … just how the Fules like it! Breanne now has a Summer job working as a Youth Leader with the Youth Club of Strathmore. Yesterday, a 12 year old boy told her … you’re 22, you have no boyfriend, and you live at home … wow.” I think she may have been a bit stunned, and didn’t reply. Well, I just want her to know that she’s a beautiful girl, inside and out. Our kids often need to hear that, and Breanne’s no different. Well Breanne, you can steal my Man Cave when you need to … as long as you warn me before I see any Bachelorette images … I don’t want to poke out my eyes! (“Fule for Thought” is a slice of life humourous column that appears in the Strathmore Times, written by long-time resident, town councillor, high school teacher, coach, husband and father of two – Pat Fule. If you would like to get in touch with Pat, you can send him an e-mail at Pat.fule@ shaw.ca)

Pass the Salt
A summer mission in our church vocabulary, we often use the word “mission” to describe something big like a trip to a far away country, to help people with specific needs. We see missions as things that take a lot of resources, or energy, or time commitments, to make a difference. But what if we redefined the word a bit, and made it a personal thing. not a church thing, but a community thing? What if we saw missions in terms of ways that each one of us could make a difference, large or small, wherever we are. in fact, what if each one of us made it our mission, to live our lives in such a way that we were making differences continuously? i was reading the strathmore Times the other day, and smiled to read about how some students had spent a day at Wheatland Lodge having a “Walker Wash.” or about two young girls who, with parents help, had held a lemonade stand to raise funds for the red Cross. Fun, creative, and as an added benefit, made a difference, made people smile. if we see a mission as an action in response to a need, then each one of us have the opportunity to live our lives in missions for others, each and every day. recently there has been a commercial on TV, which shows clips from security cameras which have caught interesting, yet not necessarily security clips … like giving a homeless man a bag of chips, rushing in with a fire extinguisher when a car bursts into flame, helping move a couch … neighborly acts of kindness. Think how much fun we could have, and how our world might be different if we lived our lives out doing things like that, just because we can. As summer unfolds, and we are out and about a bit more, i encourage each of us to watch for times to be in mission, for one another. Help water a garden … help carry a bag of groceries … stop in and see a senior or a shut in ... take your kids and a neighbor kid to the water park ... help with the flood relief ... wash a dog ... do anything for one another ... JusT BeCAuse We CAn!!! Jesus said “i tell you the truth, just as you did it for one of the least of these brothers or sisters, you did it for me ...:” matt 25:40 ... Let us go and do ... And have a great summer doing it ... Amen Pastor Dawn

Badlands Motorsport Resort jumps another hurdle
Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Reeve Glenn Koester attended Kneehill County on June 25, to hear the council pass the third reading of approval for the Badlands Motorsport Resort ASP. He said that the vote was split four in support to three against. Koester said that audience members were not encouraged to speak at this meeting. “There was a lot of anxiety on this for sure,” said Koester. Koester said Kneehill County did not ask for any further studies on the project nor did they address the inconsistency of the project with their Municipal Development Plan (MDP). Amendments to the MDP will be discussed in Kneehill Council on July 16. Wheatland council’s concerns were not discussed either. Koester was at a loss as to why their decision making process was so different from Wheatland County proceedings. He recapped the issues of concern, including the road widening on Wheatland County accesses. Wheatland Council approved a motion for staff to draft a letter asking Kneehill County Council representatives to meet with Wheatland County council, to draft an Inter-municipal Development Plan (IDP). “The roads will need serious money to redevelop,” said Koester. “All in all, things seem to have gone downhill and it gives me cause for concern.” He suggested to Council that it was time to formally ask Kneehill County for an IDP, and Councillor Ben Armstrong suggested an IDP might be useful for situations arising in the future. The Badlands Motorsport Resort project comes back to Kneehill council in December, when a re-designation bylaw will be drafted for the land. Koester said that area residents were meeting on July 3, in Rosebud, to discuss if any actions can be taken to save the property from development. Under Division Three of the Municipal Government Act, a person can apply to the Court of Queen’s Bench for an order requiring a council to amend or repeal a bylaw, by a vote of its electors. There must be a registered system of signatures from 10 per cent of the municipalities qualified voting residents, which for Kneehill County would be about 522, on a legal petition to have the judge consider requiring council to amend or repeal the bylaw. The action has to be completed and filed within 60 days of the passing of the bylaw. The area for the proposed track is also a national environmentally sensitive area. Environment Canada has been notified of the plans for the site. Koester said that he had been in Rosebud for the Rosebud School of the Arts celebrations and met with MLA Jason Hale and MP Kevin Sorenson. They toured the site only to find that with recent rains the area was flooded out. He did not know how that may impact the sensitive species at the site, require Environment Canada to do an impact study, or shift the developer’s plans in any way for the area.

Back for the summer!
Morgan Lee Times Reporter Hi Strathmore! My name is Morgan Lee. You may recognize my name from some of the summer papers last year, as well as the 2012 Strathmore Stampede Rodeo Program. I have just completed my third year at McGill University in Montreal, taking English Cultural Studies and minoring in International Development. My degree, as an English major, is heavily dependent on writing, so I write a lot during the school year. The Cultural Studies aspect of my major also enables me to work a lot with film and media sources, and through my international development minor I have become familiar with world politics and economics. All these ingredients seem to point to somehow working in media and because of my love of writing, I thought, why not do it in the summer too? I’ve lived in Strathmore most of my life, participating in clubs and activities like Fun Country Riders and Cheadle 4-H, so I definitely grew up as part of the Strathmore community. Now my lifestyle is a little more urban after living in Montreal for three years, but I always love coming back to my country roots in the summer. I’m a big rodeo fan, so during Strathmore Stampede you’ll probably be able to find me watching from the infield, and maybe even taking pictures for the Strathmore Times’ rodeo issue. Working for the Strathmore Times last summer was such a great experience, I was excited to get back to the team this year. Now, after taking some spring classes, I’m back in Strathmore ready to report on any current events I can. You’ll be hearing from me!

FOIP revamped
Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Anyone who has wrangled with the intricacies of the Freedom of Information and Privacy (FOIP) Act will be glad to hear that the government is going to update the Act to address previous problems and adapt it to a digital world. “The expectation for electronic and immediate access to information is increasing, as is awareness of the need for Albertans to ensure their personal information is protected. Rapidly evolving technologies also pose a new set of questions and parameters,” said Associate Minister Don Scott. To that end, Scott and a team of FOIP staff toured Alberta last week, holding open meetings to hear what Albertans have to say about their experiences with FOIP. An overview of the existing Act was presented by Joanne Gardiner, Manager of FOIP Services, Policy and Governance and then the floor was opened for discussion regarding confusion over the interpretations, administrative complexities, and suggestions for improvements to the Act. They asked for suggestions on what kind of information should be in the Act, and how to deal with the digital aspects of information gathering and how information should be delivered and protected through personal devices. Those who attended the Calgary public meeting, held at the Airport Holiday Inn on June 20, also brought in issues involving the Personal Information and Privacy Act (PIPA) and the Health Information Act (HIA). Some felt the many of the Acts were misused to hide information, rather than leading to open transparency in government, private and health institutions. Educational staff discussed their struggles with delivery of information. They wanted clearer guidelines. They said duplication of requests for the same information increased the man hours and placed a burden on resources. It was suggested that the Act should include a mechanism to preview information and cut down on paper copies delivered. Whether charges should apply to requests for information was discussed. Another person questioned the amount of data that was gathered, with individuals having no knowledge of how it was used. It was suggested that sometimes data presented a bias against individuals, when applying for different services in the government, because the data is allowed to be shared. The subject of increasing government control through digital monitoring was also brought up. Personal information was required before services are rendered, making it almost a type of personal currency. Privacy was discussed and some wanted concrete definitions and commented that private databases were being shared by businesses with no input from the public. Scott said they would like to find ways to make the Act clear and user friendly. They identified that many people misunderstand or misuse the Act. They wanted to make government information transparent and processes for accessing that information less complex. They also want to protect personal information, which some people felt was exchanged and used at the discretion of the government for their purposes, but not accessible to the individuals themselves. “In order for this process to be meaningful, we need a lot of feedback from people,” said Scott. They are taking comments until July 31, at which time the information will be compiled and Scott will take the results to discuss with other officials across Canada. He said the process will not be speedy, but hoped that changes will occur within the next two years. To obtain a questionnaire, go to www.alberta.ca/FOIPReview, or write suggestions and send to FOIP ACT Review, Service Alberta, Policy and Governance, Third Floor, Commerce Place, 10155 -102 Street Edmonton, AB T5J4L4 or email to: foiphelpdesk@gov. ab.ca Help desk: 780-427-7326 For more information on FOIP, see: www.servicealberta.ca/foip . Feedback from the various meetings will be posted on the Service Alberta website.

Marie Teare
John Godsman Times Contributor Marie’s parents lived in Norway, and knew each other, before moving to North America in the early 1900’s. Her father – Andrew Emile Hildahl, moved to North Dakota, then to what is now known as Wheatland County arriving in 1905. Here he worked for Harry Groves until he could get his own land, and build a house. At the same time her mother Elise moved from Norway to Minnesota. When her father Andrew had acquired his own land, and built a house, he travelled to Minnesota and married Elise in 1917. Then they travelled back to Alberta and took up residence on the farm, nine miles southwest of Strathmore. Marie was born in 1920 at Nurse MacKenzie’s Nursing Home, the second of seven children. She attended a one-room school at Glencairn along with up to 35 other children. Her father Andrew, a Mr. Groves and a Mr. Jackson had been instrumental in getting the school built, because in these three families alone, there were 22 children needing education. Marie left Glencairn, and moved to the Strathmore High School for Grade 12. Unfortunately, her mother became quite ill and had to be hospitalized, so Marie left school to return home and take care of her family, while her father worked the farm. About a year later, she returned to Strathmore, where she obtained work with Mr. & Mrs. Palardy. Mrs Palardy was expecting, and soon gave birth to their only daughter. Mr. Palardy operated Palardy’s Transport, and this is where Marie met Fred Teare, her future husband in the late 1930’s. They were married in 1940, and this marriage produced one daughter and two sons. She now has seven grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren, plus another one due any day, two great-great-grandchildren, and another one coming. This makes five generations. Marie’s husband Fred was a trucker for Palardy’s Transport until it was sold to Ray Snider. He continued to work for the new owner until 1950, when he bought the business and renamed it Freddy’s Transport, which operated between Strathmore and Calgary. When he retired in 1976, he sold his business to Wayne Keeling. Regretfully, Fred passed away from cancer in 1988. Marie’s community activities include being President of the Home and School Association, member of UCW and a Sunday School Teacher. She served in many positions with The Happy Gang which culminated in her becoming President. She was and still is a very good crib player. Ninety-three years have passed since she was born in this area. She comments there have been many changes in that time, too numerous to list here. After her marriage to Fred in 1940, they lived in a house on Third Ave., now known as The Red Carrot! She lived there for 52 years, before moving to Brentwood for nine years, then to Wheatland Lodge in 2001. Yes – there have been many changes.

Rosebud veteran takes on Jesus role in Passion Play
Laureen F. Guenther Times Contributor Aaron Krogman, who’s played in the hit Canadian play She Has a Name, and has been in a number of hits on the Rosebud stage, will play Jesus in the Canadian Badlands Passion Play this year. Krogman understudied the Jesus role for two years, which means he’d learned the role and was prepared to play it if the Jesus actor, Stephen Waldschmidt, had been unable to perform. Studying the role but not performing it was like “making bread but not serving it,” he says. This year, he looks forward to serving that bread. In mid-June, Krogman was still in rehearsals, but he’d already found that rehearsing to perform was quite different than preparing to understudy. He says, however, he won’t know what it’s like to actually “serve bread” until the play opens July 10. “The audience makes the biggest difference,” he says. “They’re such an important part of any production and you don’t really know what the story is until they’re added into the mix.” When he does meet his audience, he wants to portray a likeable Jesus, one whom Krogman and his friends would like. He also wants to bring something fresh to the story. “Keeping it fresh is one of the unique parts of getting to act it out,” Krogman says, “because (that’s) one of the important pieces of bringing it to an audience that’s probably heard the (story) before.” To do that, he has to keep it fresh for himself. “It’s more interesting when I can let go of what I know, and let myself discover it in the moment of the scene as it’s happening all around us,” he says. “It’s alive in the moment for me and for someone who needs to hear it.” Also, Krogman says, the overall goal of any storytelling is for the audience to feel empathy. “Where you step outside your own shoes and put yourself in someone else’s shoes and then imagine what it would be like to be them,” he says. “When (we) engage story in that kind of way, we become bigger human beings, and bigger than just ourselves.” As he’s spent three months preparing, Krogman is experiencing a lot of empathy with Jesus himself. “How frustrated He may have been with the Pharisees that were giving Him such a hard time back then,” he says. “And also how scary death might be. And how much love He can have for specific people.” He imagines Jesus’ victories too. “There’s a (disabled) girl who’s walking with a crutch, and Jesus gets to heal her,” he says. “To be able to give that gift to somebody ... more than anything, wow, that must have been crazy for Jesus.” Whether or not Jesus’ story is part of our own faith backgrounds, “there’s going to be something in (the Passion Play) for everybody,” Krogman says. “It’s so cool it’s in an amphitheatre, and it’s 200 actors, and whatever your worldview ... it’s awesome. The story is important too. It’s a 2,000 year old story. It’s part of our culture, regardless of what your beliefs are.” The Passion Play runs July 10 to 21. Giving back a dime at a time
After hearing of the floods in Siksika one Carseland woman took the initiative to try and raise funds for the community. Teala Quong went door to door in her community asking each person for just a dime to help with flood relief. She asked Strathmore Motor Products (SMP) if they would be willing to do anything. SMP put together $1,200 and bought four pallets of water, approximately 30 cans of bug spray, 12-15 cases of juice and 60 boxes of pasta that they hauled down to Siksika on her behalf.

Local author soon to release second book
Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Strathmore author Kati Ward will soon to releasing the second installment of her Changer Series. Ward released the first book ‘Shifted’ last July and is hoping to see ‘Tamed’ make its debut this summer. Ward has always been an avid reader, but had never really considered writing a novel until her friends kept asking her to write one. “I kind of wrote it for my friends and then they read it and were like it’s really good and so more people read it,” said Ward. “My manuscript made its way around my family and friends and you still kind of think, well they love me so they’re just being kind. So then I sent it off and apparently other people have liked it and it’s going well.” Publishing had been a long tedious process, but with the second book it should be easier and each one should get easier as she goes. She said the publisher does a lot of edits, then they want you to read through it to make sure you’re okay with their edits. Ward published through Xlibris, an American publishing company. She was looking for submission addresses for different publishing companies when she came across Xlibris. She submitted her manuscript and someone contacted her within a couple of weeks and set her up with a team to begin the publishing process. The first book in the trilogy follows the story of Jack and Lily. Lily is attacked one night and left for dead, but little did her attacker know that she would survive. With the help of Jack and his brothers Lily, learns to begin controlling her new shape shifting abilities when she’s abducted. Jack and his brothers go on the hunt to find and rescue her before it is too late. Tamed will leave behind the story of Lily and Jack and will instead follow the tale of Hunter who is mentioned briefly in the first book. “With pretty much all of my characters they’re slightly based off of people I know, even to the point their names are a little bit close. I kind of recycled a bunch of my friend’s names and then I based my characters off my friends I guess,” said Ward. “I think that’s the best way to build a character is if you can familiarize yourself with them. Then they seem I guess more real, to the writer anyway.” When her friends read the manuscript they knew right away that Lily was being referenced after Katie herself, something she hadn’t intentionally done. Ward said Shifted took her about three weeks to write, but she is finding that it is taking more time and more effort to complete her second novel. “I think because I wasn’t stressed out about trying to write it for other people, because it was just for my friends, that made it easier. Because I wasn’t concerned with making it perfect and I think that in the end helped, because it was just for fun,” said Ward. “I’m finding my second book a lot more difficult because there’s more expectations than there was with my first book.” For now Ward is working on seeing Shifted make its way into Wal-Mart and Chapters. Making writing a full time career would be ideal for the budding novelist, but something she deems as unrealistic. “You really see how hard it is to make money selling it, I mean I think I get like 10 per cent from certain places and then I get 50 per cent of e-book sales, but they’re like $3, so you have to really sell a lot of books,” said Ward. “Even just to see my book in print, I didn’t care how many sell, it’s just exciting to see my name and picture on a book and know that there’s a few people out there reading words that I wrote, it’s very surreal I guess.” Once she completes the Changer Trilogy, Ward would like to explore different genres. She is considering writing a historical romance series. She would like to branch out and try a couple of different genres and see where it takes her. Shifted can be purchased through Amazon.ca.

Calling all talent
Shannon LeClair Times Reporter The Strathmore Talent Show is back, and they are looking for talent of all types to register. The show, which took a hiatus last year, is put on as a way to help raise funds for the Wheatland Cowboys and Cowgirls Rodeo Society. “We’re taking the first 20 eligible entries and they’re not necessarily (from) Strathmore and district. We’ve opened it up, we’ve put our posters up all over Calgary, Red Deer, Ponoka, everywhere,” said Chairperson Judi Wilson. “I would love to see dancers, I would love to see ventriloquists, I would love to see jugglers, acrobatics, that kind of stuff. It’s not a singing (show), even though it seems like that’s all we get.” This year Ranchman’s Cookhouse and Dancehall from Calgary is sponsoring the event, which will begin on August 1. There have been a few changes that are coming for this year’s show. One of the biggest changes is that the panel of judges has been done away with. It will now be up to the audience to vote for who they would like to see move on. The first show, on Aug. 1 with all 20 contestants, will be accompanied by a dinner at the Civic Centre. “Then after the audience votes, the top five acts will continue on and they will perform Friday night on the Encana stage. The audience will vote, and then the top four then will compete Saturday and so on until the final two on Monday, the last day of the Stampede,” said Wilson. “There is a $20 entry fee for all entries. They get to perform and a dinner (on Aug. 1) and they get tickets into the fairgrounds.” Each day after each act from the top five performs on the Encana stage, local songstress Kirstyn Johnson will perform for 20 minutes while the audience deliberates. Wilson said there is no age limit or maximum for contestants, she just hopes to see a wide variety of acts sign up. There is $1,500 in prize money up for grabs. All of the top five will get a portion of the prize money, though exact amounts are to be determined at a later date. Tickets are on sale now for the Aug. 1 show and can purchased through the Ag Society. They are $40 each and sponsor tables are $400. The doors will open at 5 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m. and the show will start shortly after dinner. The entry date deadline for the talent show is July 15. Anyone interested can enter by going online to www.strathmorestampede. com.

SRAC has set a budget of $3,500 and Hebbes said they think they can fundraise the $1,000 through personal donations over the next few months. She then asked council for a commitment of $2,500, and asked them to have the town identified as a partner in the festival. Next year SRAC plans to look for grant funding; they missed the deadline this year by just a few days. Mayor Steve Grajczyk said in his travels to other communities he has seen firsthand how arts and culture are important. “I’m in favour of this, it’s just part of the whole community atmosphere and it brings everybody together,” said Grajczyk. Councillor Pat Fule, who had discussed bringing events into the downtown at the last council meeting, was excited about the proposal. “I really like the sound of it, I think it’s going to be one more thing that will bring the town to that area, it’s a beautiful park, it’s a great idea,” said Fule. A motion was made by council to partner with SRAC on the festival and to provide them with a grant of $2,500.

Bantam Thunder bring home the bronze

sports
Ben Sader was one of 14 Strathmore participants in this past weekend’s Sinister Seven Run, a 148 km trailrun through Crowsnest Pass, Alta. Sader’s team finished the race in just over 16 hours, at 11:35 p.m.

Strathmore bantam Thunder brought home a bronze medal on July 8 after competing all weekend in Wetaskiwin at provincials. The girls work hard all year round and look forward to a month off to enjoy their summer before practice starts up again.

Hayze Stevens (l) and sister Destiny travelled to Gallup, New Mexico from June 23-29 to compete in the National Junior High Finals Rodeo. Hayze was awarded a $1,700 scholarship from a team roping competition. Both ranked within the top five in the province, they will be competing in Canadian Finals in Nanton, Alberta from July 25-27.

Strathmore teams compete in Sinister Seven Race
Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter The Sinister Seven Race consists of 148km in seven stages throughout trails of Crowsnest Pass, Alta. Contestants begin at 7 a.m. and are given until 10 a.m. to finish - the next day. “Everybody was quite happy,” said Ben Sader, part of a fiveman team to compete over the July 6-7 weekend. “A lot of people I think surprised themselves with how it was but how well they did. We had a lot of fun.” Sader himself completed the third leg (35 km) and seventh leg (12.8 km) for his team; he crossed the finish line at 11:35 p.m., giving his team an 18th place finish among 200 in total. He ran in the event last year as well. “The winning time was ludicrous,” Sader said. “They came in at 7:19 p.m.” Two other teams with members from Strathmore finished at 11:45 p.m. and 1:30 a.m. Most had not attempted in trailrunning previously, but had accomplished marathons before. “One of the participants said, I soon learned a few kilometers into the course that hill training around Strathmore did not prepare me for what I was up against,” Sader said. The elevation and drop together range 1670 m, and have stages from dry, hot, and exposed to wet and filthy. The first leg is featured over the debris of the Frank Slide, with boulders and rocks as large as some of the houses buried underneath. There is very little road, but the views (and passing the finish line) are very rewarding. Trailrunners can be part of a same sex team, coed team, or they can run individually. Out of the 200 soloists, only a third actually complete the race. “At one point, you’re just hoping to finish. You’re not even really caring whether you’re going to run across the line, you just want to be done. It’s not only an endurance thing; your legs just hurt differently than when you run for long distances because of the sharp ups and downs,” Sader said. “At some points, you’re just hiking at a slow speed up these hills.”

Stevens kids compete in National Rodeo in New Mexico
Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter The National Junior High Finals Rodeo (NJHFR) in Gallup, New Mexico hosts 940 competitors from 41 states, five provinces, and even as far as Australia. It’s the largest junior high rodeo in the world, awarding $100,000 in college scholarships, and this year, Hayze and Destiny Stevens did Strathmore proud. From June 23-29, the brother-sister pair each competed in breakaway roping; Destiny finished 29th in the average, while Hayze finished in the 30’s, and earned a $1,700 scholarship in a supergoat dummy team roping competition with Crossfield’s Grady Quam. Not only that, but he and Quam also entered a rodeo in Pocatello, Idaho on the way down to Gallup, and beat out 20 teams of all ages for first place in team roping. Hayze previously had only been down to observe at the NJHFR, but said this year it felt much better to compete than to watch. How did it feel competing in a new, large arena? “I was really nervous,” Hayze said. “Yeah, I felt the butterflies.” Hayze, 14, will be heading to the Canadian Finals in Nanton, Alberta with his sister from July 25-27. To improve, he believes he needs to “be a little smarter in the arena I guess, be smart with my rope.” Thirteen-year-old Destiny went to the Canadian Finals in Manitoba last year, as well as Nationals in Gallup. She improved her standing in New Mexico, and hopes to do the same in Nanton this season. “I was probably both nervous and excited, just the fact that you’re competing against so many kids in one of the world’s largest rodeos,” she said. “Next year, for the junior high season, I’d like to make it back to Nationals and Canadians.” In the junior high group (Grades 6 to 8), kids must place in the top four within Alberta to qualify for Gallup, and must place in the top five to represent Alberta at the Canadian Finals. This year, Hayze was ranked second in the province, and Destiny third. The brother-sister team practice a couple times a week, and will be competing in team roping together in Nanton, along with individual breakaway. “I’m proud of both of my kids,” said mother, Crystal Stevens, who’s looking forward to seeing how her children will do on home turf. “After you go through the stresses of being in Gallup, yeah, it’ll be nice to be home, and they’re very familiar with this arena,” she said. “It’s just so comfortable for them.”

High Eagle Car and Truck Show
Morgan Lee Times Contributor The High River RV Park is hosting Gear Heads Custom and Classic Car and Truck show on Sunday, July 21. This is the event for car and truck enthusiasts who want to admire custom and classic cars in the extraordinary Rosebud Valley. The event is hosted by the Sonmor family, Jeanne, Ed and their son Lars, who have owned and operated the High Eagle RV Park for six years. The family are car aficionados themselves, working on “anything with an engine,” says Ed, so obviously, they’re very enthusiastic about running an event like this. Local cars and trucks are entered as well as entries from as far as Saskatchewan. The event welcomes all car and truck aficionados, both novice and experienced. It’s a day full of cars, trucks and fun with door prizes that are sponsored by local artisans as well as a 50/50 draw. Adding to the excitement is a live band that has been playing the event for three years. “They’re our feature band and they really play the good old stuff and some of the new stuff, some Credence Clearwater Revival and some Rockabilly, something to appeal to everybody,” says Ed. The atmosphere is laid back and “it’s kind of a sock hop on the grass and good burgers and all that stuff,” he said. But it’s not only the relaxing nature of the environment that is special, it’s the venue as well. Located in the Rosebud Valley, the High Eagle RV Park is an oasis in the midst of the badlands. “Just about every site is surrounded by wild roses … they’re in bloom and dogwood trees and the natural prairie habitat,” says Ed. “We’ve had so much rain this year it’s just one big sea of emerald here. As a matter of fact, our clients call it the emerald of the badlands when they camp here.” Ed also notes that despite the heavy rains there are none of those pesky bugs that could dampen a good weekend surrounded by nature. “Our camp is well manicured and green and mosquito free because we take preventative measures,” says Ed. Not only are the sights of the RV Park memorable, but the drive as well. There’s beautiful scenery as well as several paved roads that grant access to this event. “There’s beautiful paved access because a lot of people with high end vehicles don’t want to be driving down the gravel for obvious reasons, they put a lot of time and money into their paint and their chrome,” says Ed He mentions the 564 coming from Calgary or the 840 coming from highway 9 as great option to get there. For more information about High Eagle RV Park, you can go to the website (www. higheaglresort.com). To get more information or to register a vehicle, call Jeanne at (403) 677 2577.

The Strathmore U12 B Thunder baseball team hosted the U12 Fastpitch Provincials July 7 to 9. The girls finished in third out of the nine teams competing, walking away with the bronze medal.

U12B Thunder earn bronze at Provincials
Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Strathmore hosted nine teams and over 130 girls from July 7-9, at the Ag Grounds for Alberta’s U12 Fastpitch Provincials. With a record of 4-2 in the tournament, the Thunder beat out Sherwood Park in the bronze game by a score of 15-8. Coach Vince Olson said finishing third in the province exceeded his expectations. “Our pitchers did really well,” he said. “The girls just staying positive and having fun was the most important.” Each year, the team tiers themselves; this season, they chose to go into B. The U12B girls were also city league champions in Calgary for U12 Division 1, going undefeated in playoff games, and beating West Valley in the final. Provincials were the end to their year; however, roughly 75 per cent of the girls will be on the team again for 2014 - and the season looks very hopeful. “We’re going to look into having a fall ball program once the summer’s over, for practice and development, just to keep them playing,” Coach Olson said. The Calgary West Valley Warriors were Provincial Champions this past weekend, surpassing the Sedgewick Oilers in the final.

Goaltender Koadi Kozma attempts to make a blocker save in a game during the Canada West Cup tournament. His team finished third out of fourth overall this past weekend in Sherwood Park.

Alberta rules
Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Alberta provided two teams in the July 4-7 Canada West Cup tournament, but both fell short to British Columbia and Saskatchewan; Alberta Blue went on to beat Alberta Red for bronze, for third and fourth finishes. “(B.C. and Saskatchewan) play seasonally together all the time,” said Wheatland Inline Hockey Association’s Lynne Kozma. “(Alberta) had practice Thursday, and one Friday, and then they started the games, so they only played a day and a bit together, whereas these teams have played years and years together, right? They’ve grown together.” Kozma’s own son goaltender Koadi

Kozma, and forward/defenseman Matt Holkovic were named to Alberta Blue, while forward/defenseman Chris Rebeyka and centre Tate Barnett played for Alberta Red. All four boys were sponsored by Fuel Automotive and Accu Farm for costs of the event, after qualifying for the tournament which took place in Sherwood Park, featuring players 13 to 15-years-old. “Well, I really wanted to win, but I think it was a good experience,” Koadi Kozma said. “We could have had more practices probably.” Lynne Kozma says the boys made some new good friends and grew as players. “I mean, there’s always a bigger picture than winning,” she said.
Nine-year-old Adam Kirkpatrick will be participating in the AAU Junior Olympics and FIRS Youth World Cup, both in Huntington Beach, California, as part of the U10 inline hockey team. The Wheatland Elementary student is the only player south of Red Deer to be chosen to represent the province and the country.

The Strathmore Times, Town of Strathmore and the Strathmore & District Chamber of Commerce are pleased to bring back the annual “Best Hamburger in Town!”

The winner will receive a “Feature Article” in the Strathmore Times and will be featured on the Town of Strathmore’s website as the Best Hamburger in Strathmore and have 1 year bragging rights and a trophy to display in your establishment. Contest starts on August 16 to SEptember 6, 2013. The deadline to take part in this exciting contest is Thursday, August 8, 2013.

California dreaming
Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Strathmore’s own Adam Kirkpatrick will be representing not only Team Alberta’s inline hockey team, but also Team Canada, in Huntington Beach, as part of the AAU Junior Olympics (July 11-14) and the FIRS Youth World Cup (July 1518). This means that over an eight-day span, the young defenseman could be playing 12-16 games—in California heat. “I’m really excited, it’ll be fun. Like after our games, we get to go to Disneyland and stuff like that,” said Kirkpatrick, who’ll be going into the fourth grade at Wheatland Elementary this fall. Kirkpatrick is the only one from Strathmore to be playing on Team Alberta; that same team has been named to represent Canada in the Youth World Cup, facing off against countries such as Great Britain and Japan.

The Anaheim Ducks will be providing transportation for the team, and they even own the facility where the tournaments will be taking place. Kirkpatrick plays ice hockey in Strathmore during winters, but made the cut for the U10 inline team after playing in Calgary. He previously has competed in provincials for inline. ““He’s always out in the garage,” said mother Kristi of her son. “He’s always out practicing his shot and his stickhandling—having fun.”

Shell-Swa
Female,
Himalayan - Blue&Flame point

Born: February 2002
Shell-Swa was rescued from the Humane Society after she was deemed un-adoptable due to her reaction to being in a stressful environment. She came into our rescue as a scared and pretty grumpy girl. She still has her moments (don’t we all!?) but has really come around. She spends most of her days now quietly sitting in the sun rays through the window or sleeping in her favorite laundry basket. She has the funniest little face with a quirky personality to go with it. She does fine with another quiet cat around but would do best without any young children in the home. Her ideal home is a quiet one with one or two people, she is 8 yrs old and looking for a forever home.

U14 Thunder wrap up their season
Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter This season, Strathmore’s U14 Thunder was divided into two groups: players born in 1999, and 2000. The 1999 girls lost in the finals of league play. The latter had a team record of 6-3, and lost in the semi-finals of the Calgary Minor Softball League, but finished second in the season. In tournaments, the U14 Thunder team was comprised of players from both groups—a team that won bronze at Provincials over Canada Day long weekend against Lacombe. “The provincial team was characterized by determined ball players that chose to excel and proved their ability as good softball players,” Coach Jason Sauve said. Sauve believes his team competed successfully at the B level, beginning with their opening tournament in Strathmore from May 18-19. “That went well for us. That was the first time we played of a lot of the teams that we saw multiple times after that,” he said. The Thunder’s June tournaments proved to be tougher for the girls; they placed third in Red Deer, and faced Division A teams in St. Albert. “It was the top notch teams of Alberta in that age group, and that was a lot more challenging. The girls learned a lot at the tournament, for sure,” Sauve said. He also noted that Strathmore is playing against towns that have 10-15 times the amount of people: “Most of the bigger centres, their best teams (Calgary and Edmonton) would play in the A Division, but Strathmore actually competed very well for the size of the town.” The girls started this season’s training very early indoors during the winter, and Coach Sauve feels that aided their performance. “That made us a lot stronger than a lot of our competition,” he said. “I think all the girls are looking forward to playing next year.”

The Strathmore Thunder U14B group, made up of girls from the 1999 and 2000 teams, finished third in the province this year, beating the Lacombe Matrix. The Thunder began training in the winter, which properly conditioned them for the summer season.
