One lucky Strathmore bull rider had a chance to meet William and Kate, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge when he performed a demonstration for them at the Calgary Stampede on July 7. “There was me, and Jesse Torkelson and Devon Mezei, (we) got to ride three bulls for them,” said Scott Schiffner. The reason they were picked is the million dollar question, said Schiffner. His best guess is the Stampede wanted three Canadians to perform and they were three of the four Canadians who were competing in the first pool, and they have all participated in the Canadian Finals Rodeo, CFR. Torkelson is a reigning Canadian champion and Schiffner himself is a past Canadian champ, which he thinks may have made a difference too. The three of them found out they would be performing for the royal couple about 10 days before the actual event. Schiffner said they didn’t put in any extra practice time. “I got a chance to talk to William there, I probably talked to him for about two or two and a half minutes,” said Schiffner. “(It was) really good, very down to earth guy. He’s pretty interested in rodeo and asked lots of pretty smart questions… most people that aren’t involved in rodeo ask the pretty basic questions, and he was pretty interested in how it worked and very interested in the rodeo stock, especially the bucking bull end of it.” Schiffner said they were kind of joking with William about how it was his turn to ride a bull, and he just kind of laughed and told them he would if there weren’t that many people watching. “I think he was more just having some fun with everybody,” said Schiffner. “It was good, but I think something like that was definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity, so we just kind of jumped all over it and went from there,” said Schiffner. “It was just pretty exciting for people in their stature and well known around the world to take an interest in what we do and in the rodeo world because any publicity definitely helps.”

Local bull rider eyes wild card
Despite being bucked off of ‘In The Mix’ during the July 10 performance of the Calgary Stampede, Strathmore’s own Scott Schiffner still has a chance for $100,000 at the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth. The 31-year-old is one of 12 bull riders looking to shine during the Wild Card Saturday. The top two riders from the July 16 performance will then join the top-four competitors from both Pool A and Pool B at the Showdown Sunday. Mario Prusina Photo

Riding for a cause
The annual Harleys and Hotrods Poker Run took place on July 9. Approximately 170 riders and non-riders came to take part in the event, which raises money for the Children’s Wish Foundation. After the run finished up everyone gathered at AAB Steel just east of Strathmore to have fun, and unwind. There were different games to keep people entertained, including a keg push where people had to push a keg past a hay bail using their motorbike. There was also a mini sort of show and shine to decide who had the best bike overall. The winner of the best bike Guido, was awarded the Davis Cup, which was created for this particular event. Davis Weisner, 14, fought a long five year battle with cancer, and in March the battle ended. His parents said his biggest fear was being forgotten and that was just one of the reasons the Davis Cup was created. Davis’s mom said that without organizations such as the Children’s Wish Foundation and the Kids Cancer Care, she doesn’t know how they would have made it through. The goal this year was to raise enough funds to break the $100,000 mark. The final numbers were not available as of press time.

SFD Calendar launch
Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter The launch of the 2012 firefighters calendar took place during the annual firefighters breakfast on July 1. This year things were done a little differently, and instead of different fire departments around Alberta being showcased, this year’s calendar focuses on the Strathmore Fire Department, SFD. “So basically what we’ve done is we’ve completely internalized the calendar, we kind of created the calendar on our own,” said Ryan Parkins with the SFD. “So it’s fully encompassing of our department…all the pictures in it are of our department, all the elements of it are of our department.” There were three local photographers, and three members of the department who shot photos for the calendar. This year, to help motivate people to support the calendar program, the SFD has put together a raffle that is going to go hand in hand with it. When people purchase a calendar they will be given a free raffle ticket into a draw for over $1,500 in prizes. There is an early bird component too, and people who buy calendars before a certain date will get it. The date for the early bird is the end of July. In the past the SFD has been featured in the calendar produced by the Fire Within. While the department was happy to work with them, it was time to try something new. “One (reason) was to make it more personal so the community could connect with it a little bit better, so that people weren’t struggling just to find a reason to purchase a calendar,” said Parkins, “On top of that, every year the association attempts to reinvigorate the enthusiasm

towards community actions. This was just one of our methods of hoping to reinvigorate not only our members, but the public to be involved with the fire service and with the community.” The SFD printed 1,000 cop-

ies for the first run, and Parkins said they hope to beat a previous record by selling more than 1,200 calendars. The calendars are selling for $20 and can be purchased at the fire hall, or by contacting any independent firefighter.

Gearing up for 18th Annual Show and Shine
Jenna CampbeLL Times Jr. Reporter The Strathmore Fun Runners will be presenting their 18th Annual Show and Shine, an event organized by Muscle Motors, a local Strathmore business. Many classic cars will be given the chance to be put on display at Kinsmen Park July 22-23. Beginning on Friday, at 6 p.m., car enthusiasts will be conducting a cruise throughout Strathmore, beginning the convoy at the local A&W, making way for a short stop at the Strathmore Lodge to visit with the residents and finally circle back to the starting point. The Show and Shine will begin on Saturday at 9 a.m., and includes a $10 fee for anyone who wishes to enter the show. Alongside the exhibition during the day, there will be face painting and activities for the kids, door prizes, beer gardens, a live band, and a concession, where all proceeds are being donated to Strathmore’s Lord of All Lutheran Church. Also, a table set where the chairs are built to resemble car wheels will be raffled off, and tickets can be purchased now or at the event. In addition, a chassis ‘dyno’, a device used to measure a car’s power, will also be brought back this year, given the good response it received after making its first appearance to the show the previous year. As for the number of vehicles to be expected in the show, President of Muscle Motors, Todd Blakney, is hoping this year’s turnout will hit the 200 range. “Unfortunately, Airdrie has a show and Calgary has a big one at the same time, and Vulcan has theirs. There are just so many shows, that’s why we keep our admission ten dollars, we keep it low, and we give a lot of prizes,” said Blakney. In recent years, there has been a significant decline in the number of participants, given that many car shows are using the same date, according to Blakney, who states that numbers used to reach 300 to 350. “For a lot of the shows that people do attend elsewhere, Strathmore probably has one of the finest locations. There are so many other shows that don’t host the event on a grassy area around a lake with lots of trees, where people can set up tents and lawn chairs. There’s just that kind of room versus the pavement where a lot of the shows in Calgary are on concrete and asphalt,” said Blakney. For all the more reason to come out the Show and Shine, compared to other shows, Strathmore has very little traffic and enables a lot of drivers to easily to hit the highway in their supercharged vehicles. “Get out of the city and come to the town! I think we put on a pretty good venue and people do walk out with pretty good stuff for really, only ten bucks,” said Blakney.

Recognition for their work within the community
Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter Community Futures Wild Rose was recently awarded the Economic Diversifier Award. The award recognizes Community Futures organizations for their efforts in economic development and innovative business ideas. “It’s a provincial award that’s awarded by our Community Futures Network of Alberta to Community Futures organizations that demonstrate excellence in project activities as well as lending activities that show rural diversification,” said Jennifer Brooks, with Community Futures Wild Rose. “They hand out awards quarterly and we received one for the winter, and of course again focusing on our involvement with the Business Vitality Initiative, BVI, as well as our innovative lending that we did that quarter. We’re a small office, but we do big things to impact our community.”

Courtesy of Community Futures Wild Rose

Community Futures Wild Rose has helped Strathmore and Acme, two communities in its region, facilitate a BVI. As part of a project funded through the provincial Rural Community Adaptation Program, Alberta Urban Municipalities Association and the Centre for Innovative and Entrepreneurial Leadership, Strathmore and Acme were two of only six communities selected for the initiative. Community Futures Wild Rose coordinated the project within its region and assisted the communities in writing applications and reports, and facilitating community input. The BVI included a community consultation process, prioritization of initiatives in each community and $10,000 in seed funding to actually implement the activities. Acme undertook a downtown beautification enhancement project and Strathmore launched a Buy Local campaign and local signage initiative. Community Futures Wild Rose has also helped support small businesses through its lending program.

At Studio 86 Tanning our state of the art equipment, air-conditioned comfort and friendly, knowledgeable staff are just a few reasons why we are the tanning salon of choice in Strathmore.

If you’re feeling light headed and tired or unable to concentrate or are having frequent headaches, this could be a sign you are not drinking enough water and keeping your body hydrated. Sip water throughout the day and have a jug of water in the fridge at all times, toss in a few slices of lemon or lime for flavor. Try to stay away from sodas and high sugar content drinks as they may quench your thirst temporarily, but add lots of extra empty calories. Choose fruits and vegetables such as watermelon and cucumbers that have high water content to satisfy your hydration needs.

July 28 august 1, 2011 Showing their appreciation
What’s one of the best ways to say you appreciate someone? Feed them. That’s exactly what the Ag. Society will be doing to show their appreciation to their sponsors and volunteers, who will be an instrumental part of making the 2011 Heritage Days Stampede a success. The Ag. Society will be putting on an appreciation banquet July 26, as a way to say thank you. The banquet takes place two days before Heritage Days will open its gates. “We kind of have it as the unofficial kick off to Heritage Days,” said Darcy Ledene, general manager for the Ag. Society. The banquet is annual event, but anyone who has gone in previous years will notice things have changed, but only a little. “This year we’ve actually changed up the program just slightly. We’re

bringing in a Yuk Yuk’s comedian by the name of Scott Dumas, and he’s going to provide some comic relief and some entertainment during the supper hour and then we’ll have our traditional live auction and silent auction items.” From 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. there will be time for everyone to mingle before sitting for a roast beef dinner. At 8 p.m. there will be introduction of the committee heads, and thanks will be given to all of the volunteers and sponsors. Ledene said the title sponsor for the banquet is the UFA, and the Ag. Society is happy to have them on board. After dinner people will be able to dance the night away as TC & Company hit the stage to provide entertainment into the evening. Heritage Days is almost here and the Ag. Society could still use more volunteers. To find out how to become a volunteer go to www.strathmorerodeo.com .

Letters to the editor

Fence replacement sparks debate
To the Editor After fighting the good fight, Steve Grajczyk ungraciously informed my wife that we residents of Green Meadows & View Crescents would be losing our beloved fence. We took our fight to town hall on Wednesday, July 6, petitions in hand, 240 some signatures strong, but gained no ground. Though the ‘O mighty dollar was admittedly their main concern, our concerns were met with flimsy excuses and ill thought out rebuttals. My personal favorite was when Mr. Rocky Blokland implied that a $3,000 fence would add more to my property value than our current fence with a $40,000 replacement value. I thought a businessman would have a better grasp on value than that. Council also told us that residents have a problem flipping the bill for our community’s fence, but what about our own tax dollars? I pay a little over $130 a month in property taxes. Assuming that all 29 affected properties on Green Meadows alone pay about the same. Over ten years, we will have paid about $452,400 - nearly half a million dollars! Surely that’s enough for a true investment in our community. But what do our tax dollars get us? Sub par snow removal and slow pothole repairs? A useless Zen garden which no one asked for and an outdoor auditorium to be used three times a year? However, I digress, though I would like to say thank you to Bob Sobol for making it clear which face we were talking to in council. Rest assured gentlemen, your names won’t be forgotten come election time! Jim Higgins Strathmore

The Government of Canada Supports Seniors
Crowfoot riding Kevin Sorenson, Member of Parliament for Crowfoot says more than 680,000 of Canada’s lowest income seniors, will soon benefit from the most significant increase to the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) in a quarter century. “Canada’s seniors have worked hard to build a better country for future generations and the Government of Canada has taken significant action to improve their quality of life,” says Sorenson. “In Budget 2011, the Next Phase of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, we have increased financial support for low-income seniors and enhanced the New Horizons for Seniors Program.” Sorenson continues, “starting in July this year, seniors with little or no income other than the Old Age Security (OAS) benefit and the GIS now receive additional benefits up to $600 per year for single seniors and up to $840 per year for couples. The increase represents a $300 million investment per year and is the third GIS increase our government has provided in the last five years. We are helping seniors meet their immediate, basic needs and maintain a minimum standard of living in retirement. This is something to celebrate for many seniors in our riding. “Budget 2011 is also providing an additional $10 million over two years for the New Horizons for Seniors Program. It helps seniors use their leadership, energy and skills to benefit communities across Canada. A call for proposals for this program is now open. I encourage Seniors’ organizations in our riding to visit www.hrsdc. gc.ca/seniors for details,” he concludes.

New resource helps employers understand foreign-earned education
Arno doerksen, MLA Strathmore-Brooks Constituency Alberta is facing a labour shortage of 77,000 workers in the next decade. One of the ways to address the labour shortage is to ensure that newcomers to our province are working in their field of education and experience as soon as possible. A new online tool has been made available to tackle this problem and help employers and human resources professionals understand foreign-earned education. The resource is the Education Overview Guides. The guides provide a breakdown of the education credentials from 10 different countries – Nigeria, Pakistan, China, Colombia, India, South Korea, Philippines, Russia and the former USSR and the United Kingdom. The majority of immigrants in Alberta were educated in these countries. The guides provide placement recommendations, as well as information like prerequisites and length of study that place credentials in context to education in Alberta. This new resource will help employers and human resources professionals understand an applicants’ foreign-earned education. The brief overviews will insure that qualified applicants are considered for positions because the hiring staff better understand their credentials. But employers and human resources professionals are not the only ones who can use the guides. Immigrants, immigrant-serving agencies and Alberta Works offices will also find the new resources a great new asset to find out how credentials generally compare to Alberta standards and identify careers that are suited to the worker’s education. For a list of the 59 Alberta Works offices around the province, visit employment.alberta.ca/ Offices. The Government of Alberta is dedicated to attracting newcomers to Alberta and getting them in their field of education and experience as soon as possible. Initiatives like these new guides demonstrate the government’s commitment to tackling the labour shortage and getting qualified immigrants in the right jobs. Passion play ready for 100th performance
Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter The Canadian Badlands Passion Play will show their 100th performance on July 15 at 6 p.m. The play takes place in Drumheller in the Canadian Badlands Amphitheatre. Passion plays have been going on all over the world for hundreds of years. “Basically what it is, is over different places and times, and cultures will get together and they’ll put together usually the last seven days of Christ’s life. Ours is different in that we do more of the whole life, not emphasizing just the last seven days, so we’re a bit different,” said Vance Neudorf, executive director. “It’s more kind of like a gospel story of who was this person, what were they up to and then seen, usually through the eyes of a narrator, who kind of leads people through and tells them what he saw of the story happening before his eyes” The outdoor amphitheatre is a natural bowl in the valley which seats 2,700 and features a custom set, built to make guests feel as though they are in Jerusalem. If it begins to rain Neudorf said the show still goes on, but if it becomes a storm then they will cancel that day’s performance and give the guests tickets for another day. “We’ve only lost one show to rain in 99 performances,” said Neudorf. The final week to see the performance is coming up, and though this weekend isn’t sold out yet, some of the dates are getting close. Tickets are $32 for an adult at the back to $44 for at the front but Neudorf doesn’t think there are any tickets left for the front rows. “They can buy them right up until the last day of performance as long as there’s still some available at the gate. I don’t always recommend that route because often they aren’t,” said Neudorf. The final dates to see the Passion play are July 15, 16, 21 and 22 at 6 p.m. or July 17, 23 and 24 at 3 p.m. The show runs approximately three hours, with a half hour intermission. On July 11, the marhsman family out of Rockyford was one of 18 families in Alberta to win the 2011 BmO Farm Family Award.

Wheatland County family wins 2011 BMO Family Farm Award
Courtesy of the Calgary stampede After a summer of chemotherapy and a stem cell bone marrow transplant to treat cancer in his colon, Dwayne Marshman has seen some of life’s worst moments. But every morning when he wakes up at the family’s century-old farmhouse, he sees some of life’s best. “There’s nothing I love better than being out on that tractor, and growing a bumper crop,” says Dwayne, who’s been told by doctors that his rare form of cancer, mantle cell lymphoma, is now in remission. “It’s seeing the cows, too . . . watching the calves being born, and grow. It’s the circle of life, I guess, that always amazes me every year. I could be close to the end of mine, or I could go another 20 years. Who knows? But I’m alive, and feeling great.” The Marshman name has been part of the east-central Alberta farming landscape since 1909, when Dwayne’s greatgrandfather brought his family to Canada from Latah, Wash. Dwayne’s wife Mary is a descendant of the Koester clan that also has a long history in the area, having arrived in Rockyford in 1929 from Council Bluffs, Iowa. For their longevity, their perseverance, and their deep love of the land, the Marshmans are Wheatland County’s choice for a 2011 BMO Farm Family Award. The Marshmans run a dryland grain operation about 12 kilometres south of Carbon, seeding about 1,800 acres each year in wheat, canola, and barley. They’ve also got a small cow/calf operation, and run a greenhouse supplying tomatoes and bedding-out plants to customers in the area. In 2005, Dwayne and Mary’s youngest daughter Kimberly and her husband Ben

Salt, originally from England, returned to the farm full-time. Dwayne and Mary’s oldest daughter Kathy and husband Lance, along with their young daughters Josie and Jenna, help out when they can, as does son Craig. Eight years ago, Dwayne worked with the Rosebud River Watershed Group to develop an off-stream watering system. With his cattle drinking fresh well water instead of stagnant water in the bottoms, the move has helped to protect riparian areas and resulted in a significant weight gain for the calves. The family has also made every attempt to increase production through modern agronomics, while protecting the land for future generations. “My grandfather always told us that we never really own the land - we just purchased the right to use it,” remarks Dwayne. Off the farm, Mary is the chairman of the Rockyford Library, and has been playing the organ at St. Rita’s Church for 25 years. Dwayne is a director with the Wild Rose Agriculture Producers and is connected with the Rockyford Rural Fire Association. Dwayne also coached hockey for 10 years and ringette for another 20. In May 2010, when his cancer diagnosis prevented him from coaching ringette, his team hosted a Ringers for a Reason fundraiser. The 12-hour game, supper, and concert helped raise $50,000 for patient comfort care in the Bone Marrow Stem Cell Transplant Unit at Calgary’s Foothills Medical Centre. “My son-in-law kept telling me this spring, ‘I’ll do the fertilizing,’ ” recalls Dwayne. “I said, ‘You know, Ben, that’s where I love to be. You guys fill it and calibrate it, and I’ll run the tractor.’ “That’s the best medicine for me.”

RCMP Briefs
Gleichen RCMP report that on July 7, at approximately 4:20 p.m., police received a call of a possible drowning in the Bow River. Police and local EMS services attended and learned that that a group of young adults were swimming in an area of the Bow River when the strong undercurrent caused one of the swimmers to be swept away. Witnesses at the scene attempted to save the swimmer, but were unsuccessful in their efforts. The swimmer is described as a native male, 22 years of age, wearing a green t-shirt and blue shorts. Police believe that the male has drowned. A search for the missing man is still underway with an RCMP boat and helicopter being utilized along with a fire rescue boat from the Siksika First Nations. The name of the man is not being released at this time. It is unknown if alcohol was a factor. On Saturday June 18, the Strathmore RCMP responded to a complaint of mischief to the soccer field behind Ranch Estates in Strathmore. RCMP located tire tracks through the newly opened soccer fields causing damage to the grass. The suspect vehicle is believed to be a front wheel drive. Gleichen RCMP report that on July 9, at approximately 10:30 p.m., police received a call of an armed robbery that had occurred at the Siksika Service Station. Investigation revealed that three victims; a man, woman and 10-year-old child, reported that they were held up at knife-point, had their motor vehicle stolen and that the suspects fled the scene. RCMP located the two suspects after they had crashed the motor vehicle and became stuck in a

Possible drowning

ditch near Highway 547. Siksika Security and civilians who witnessed the robbery, prevented the two suspects from fleeing the crash scene. RCMP arrived shortly after the crash and arrested two suspects. A 29-year-old male and a 27-year-old female are currently in custody and are facing robbery and weapons charges. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this incident. The names of persons involved are not being released at this time. Gleichen RCMP report that on July 10, at 3:44 p.m., police received a call of a single vehicle rollover collision on highway 842, near the Hamlet of Cluny. Police and local EMS services attended and learned that a 49-year-old male was driving his vehicle south bound on secondary highway 842. The vehicle rolled sideways in the East ditch. The lone male occupant was thrown from the vehicle and was pronounced deceased at the scene. It is not believed that alcohol was a factor. The name of the male is not being released at this time. On July 11, at approximately 5 p.m., the Strathmore RCMP received a report of a Break and Enter with theft of firearms in Rockyview County, near the City of Calgary. Unknown suspects had broken into a residence stealing two firearms. The firearms are a Winchester Model 94, lever action 303 and a .22 calibre Winchester bolt Wildcat with a Bushnell scope. If anyone has any information about this or any other criminal offence, they are asked to contact the Strathmore RCMP at 403-934-3968 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Residents upset over proposed new fencing
Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter Residents of Green Meadows gathered in the chamber offices during the regular town council meeting on July 6. Mandy Gillespie spoke on behalf of the residents, who wanted to ask council to reconsider replacing the current wooden fence with a post and cable system. “It makes it unsafe for our children, by not placing a barrier between them and the busy East Lake Road. Automobiles that travel along the East Lake Road don’t currently have the mindset to be alert to looking for our children running out onto the busy roadway, there are pathways that go through, but they are crosswalks,” said Gillespie. “Most of the children that are on our side, are crossing across East Lake to get to any of the schools that are on the opposite side. We’re concerned that the entire street with a pole and cable will turn into a giant crosswalk.” She continued on to say that a post and cable system will reduce property values, and take away from the residents’ privacy by allowing more visibility into their backyards. The existing fence is over 10 years old, is covered in graffiti and has fallen into a state of disrepair. The cost to replace the fence would be approximately $45,000, whereas a post and cable system would cost just over $3,500. Out of the 35 houses directly affected, only 14 of them do not have a fence. “I also have 264 signatures from our petition that has circulated around town the last two weeks,” said Gillespie. Numerous letters have also been sent to council, with arguments for, or against, the possible new fencing system. “There were a couple of reasons that I didn’t necessarily agree with, one was the fence that’s there now is a far better theft, or vandalism deterrent,” said Councillor Pat Fule. “My disagreement with that is basically that if the post and cable fence is there it’s a lot more visible…I don’t necessarily see the solid wood fence preventing theft or vandalism, in fact I think the solid fence could actually encourage that because they are hidden from one whole side of the road.” Fule said the best argument brought up was the fact that kids will be able to cross the road anywhere they want if a post and cable system is put in. “To me, that fence is an eyesore and the sooner we get it out of there the better it’s going to be for you guys,” said Councillor Rocky Blokland, commenting on the possible decreasing of property values. Councillor Bob Sobol said the laneway is a concern for him, and that kids shouldn’t be playing there to begin with because it gives the kids a false sense of security. “I was a strong supporter of the fence and the replacement of the fence at the beginning, and to me it’s not as much the money issue, if we have to find $50,000 to make something safer, than I’ll go to bat for it,” said Sobol. “I’m having a hard time with this one because the problem is not that fence, the problem I think is the laneway, and no matter which way we go, we need those yards fenced. Somehow we have to get them fenced and keep those kids out of the laneway.” Mayor Steve Grajczyk said they are torn, and obviously life and limb come first, but he would like developers to never put that type of fencing in the future. “I would love to protect everybody but there’s just things we can’t do,” said Grajczyk. Fule made a motion to replace the fence on the south side of East Lake Road with a similar style and sized wooden fence. An amendment was made to make the fence plastic, which would last longer. The motion was defeated.

The biggest little show Santa Claus is coming back to in Alberta town early
Shannon leClair Times Reporter A love for Christmas has prompted Ribbitz owner Lindsay Mullins to recreate the holiday in July. Mullins co-owns the store with Tammy Goodwin, and on July 23 they will be bringing Christmas in July to Strathmore. “Why? I just love Christmas, and I love Santa Claus,” said Mullins. Mullins came up with the idea from her childhood. Originally from Ontario, she said her family would go to the U.S to go camping in the summer and they would always have Christmas in July. “My step-grandpa used to dress up as

Santa Claus, and so…I just love Christmas and I kind of got the idea from there,” said Mullins. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be at the store from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for photos, which will cost $3 for one child and $5 for more than one in the photo. There will be face painting from 2:30p.m. to 3:30 p.m., balloon twisting from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. From 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. local home businesses, Gold Party, Lia Sophia and Gold Canyon Candles will be showcasing some of their items. The Cub Scouts will also be at the store, hosting a BBQ. The store will also be having hourly sales, something Mullins said the previous owner had done. “So we open at 10 a.m. so

from 10 to 11 a.m. would be one sale, which it’s all a surprise. There will be clothes, toys, it could be whatever per cent off of Roxy or Quicksilver for an hour or it could be off of Melissa and Doug for an hour, or anything that’s not clothes for an hour…it could be anything,” said Mullins. “I’ve got it all planned, but nobody can know.” Mullins said it might be a good time for people to come in to get their back to school shopping done. Mullins said Christmas in July is something she would possibly like to see become an annual event at the store. Ribbitz carries kids clothes sized 0 to 18, and they also have accessories, such as diaper bags, toys, and soothers.

Home improvement tips from pAint experts
iDentiFY CAUses to eAsiLY CorreCt pAintinG proBLems
Many people think of painting as a rather problem-free decorating task - and usually, it is. There are a few simple problems that may come up, however; and if recognized, they are easy to correct. Your applicator is not holding enough coating if an excessive amount of time is spent reloading the roller. Either the roller cover does not contain enough fabric, or the fabric used does not meet the requirements for a particular coating. If you are having trouble with slight ridges in dry paint film, your applicator may be poor quality. If the polyester or nylon filament of a brush is not finished properly, it will leave marks. Other causes include a too-porous surface that absorbs too much coating, excessive brushing, applying too little paint, using the wrong type thinner or not allowing enough drying time between coats. Brush marks will also occur in paint films that dry too rapidly. If you are having trouble with poor hiding of colours, it is most likely that too little paint is being applied. Other causes include a radical colour change from one coat to the next, the underlying surface being too porous, the use of a poor quality applicator, excessive paint thinning and inadequate mixing of the paint. A rough crinkled paint surface usually occurs when there is interference with the normal drying time of the paint. If the surface film dries before the bottom layer, the dry film will mover and wrinkles will form. This will occur when a second coat is applied before the first is dry or when painting in the hot sun or over too cold a surface. When painting, problems should be few, but knowing the cause is the first step toward the solution.

Rosebud Theatre Company’s Prairie Stories Contest
Jenna Campbell Times Jr. Reporter In honour of the Canadian writer W.O. Mitchell, Rosebud’s Theatre Company (RTC) will be hosting a Prairie Stories Contest, where story tellers are encouraged to put their pens to paper and submit their original stories about growing up on the Canadian prairies. The event stemmed from the RTC’s summer production, Jake and the Kid: Prairie Seasons, which is based upon a novel by Mitchell and was adapted to theatre by James B. Douglas. After the RTC received secured rights for the production of ‘Jake’, from the author’s son, Orm Mitchell, he also offered the company a number of his father’s books which could be used as a means of promotion. The suggested idea was perfectly fitting to encourage patronage by having them submit their prairie stories and in exchange, be rewarded with books. Throughout the summer of 2011 and progressing on until Aug. 27, weekly winners will be drawn for a book or an audio book by the author and the grand prize winner for best story will receive a larger package of the many works of W.O. Mitchell. The turnout for incoming stories has been great, according the RTCs’ marketing coordinator, Heather Little. With very little publicity, the theatre received maybe six or seven stories the first week, and as the summer continually progresses, so does the number of stories. “It’s really great to get these stories in and read them, and hear about all the experiences people had growing up on the Canadian prairies, and how they compare to our own experiences here in Rosebud, and the times now too, how things have changed,” said Little. So far, there have been three weekly winners, the most recent winner being Donna Black, who was drawn on July 2. She tells a story of her dad’s recollection of walking on thin ice. The prior winner, Steve Rendall tells an unlikely story of Elvis Presley attending his school at the Bible Institute in Three Hills. Tthe first story being a remembrance of the past and an acknowledgement of that things back then were not quite as easy as they are today. The story written by Jean Dudley (deceased) and was submitted by her daughter, Betty Fourier. All three stories can be found on the RTC’s website, as well as an audio recording of each story, read aloud by one of

the cast members from the production, Jake and the Kid: Prairie Seasons. As to whether or not the Prairie Writing Contest will become a yearly thing, Little says it depends on the show’s success and if the prizes can be made available the following year. But for now, the show in 2011 is the focus. Jake and the Kid: Prairie Seasons started on May 27 and will on until Aug 28, during Wednesdays through Sundays. Matinees as well as evening performances are both available. More information about finding tickets can be found on the RTC’s website, www.rosebudtheatre.com.

High marks for Classic Communities
mario prusina Times Editor A southern Alberta company with ties to the Strathmore community, has been ranked in Canada’s Profit 200 magazine for the fourth straight year. Classic Construction Limited (CCL) ranked 89th as one of Canada’s fastestgrowing companies after exhibiting a three-year revenue increase of 160 per cent with assets totaling more than $49.5 Million. Over the last few years, the company has joined forces with the Government of Alberta and the Town of Strathmore to create an innovative partnership that will create an affordable housing option in Strathmore. The first phase of the Bayside Villas, located off of Thomas Drive at Bayside Place, is slated to be complete later this summer. To be recognized as one of Canada’s fastest-growing companies was a huge honour for CCL Classic Communities. “This growth was achieved through expansion into the single-family housing market and incorporating Built Green technologies,” said CCL President/CEO Murray Prokosch. “All the while, we’ve continued our long held practice of keeping our homes attainable and within reach of the average homeowner. “We’ve achieved our success by sharing over $37 Million in profits with our homeowners through our unique Mortgage Assistance Plan. By helping households realize their dream of home ownership, with a high quality, attainable product, we’ve realized our goal of corporate success.” If you are interested in the Bayside Villas Project or if you have any questions, visit their website at www.cclhomes.com or call (403) 934-9974.

Mario PruSina Times Editor A former UFA Bison standout is joining the organization he grew up watching as a youngster. Jordan Henry, who toiled with the local triple-A midget team in 2002-2003, was officially traded to the Calgary Flames July 9 and immediately signed to a two-way contract. In return, the Flames sent defenceman Keith Seabrook to the Florida Panthers. “Being from Southern Alberta and everything, it’s definitely exciting and a thrill to be with an organization I grew up watching,” said the 25-yearold. “Most people I know are Flames fans … (so) it’s something special to be part of now.” After a successful season with the Bisons, Henry played five seasons in the WHL with the Moose Jaw Warriors and the Red Deer Rebels. After completing his junior career, Henry signed as a free agent with the Florida Panthers and split his first professional year between the Florida Everblades (ECHL) and Rochester Americans (AHL). During his final campaign with Rochester (2009-10) he recorded 31 points and accumulated 104 penalty minutes in 76 games. Following three seasons in the AHL, Henry signed with Minsk Dynamo of the KHL for the 2010-11 season. However, Henry sees an opportunity to advance his career in the Flames organization. “You saw (early on) in free agency that Florida went out and signed a bunch of guys right away because they have money they have to spend (to reach the salary cap floor),” said Henry. “Calgary is a little tighter to the salary cap, but yet there are a couple of spots open. So that’s where the competition between younger guys like myself starts. There are probably four or five guys (fighting) for one or two spots brOnZe SPOnSOrS

Henry traded to Flames
on the backend, so I’ll definitely be right in that mix. “It’s a matter of playing my game and playing well enough to secure one of those spots.” Calgary General Manager Jay Feaster sees Henry as a valuable piece to the Flames organization. “Jordan Henry is a two-way defenseman who plays with an edge to his game,” said Feaster. “He is a responsible and smart defender, yet he is also adept at joining the rush and pinching down the wall to support the offense. He is still a solid prospect and we viewed this trade as an opportunity to give two young players a new start with different organizations. We look forward to seeing Jordan compete with our other recent depth acquisitions for a spot in our top seven in camp.” Regardless of where he plays next season, either in the NHL with the Flames or in the AHL with the Abbotsford Heat, Henry is much closer to his parents, who live in the Strathmore area. “I know my parents were happy about (the trade) as well,” laughed Henry. “They only got to come over to Russia for a week, so they should be able to catch a few more games. Even if the worst case scenario, I end up in Abbotsford and that’s just a quick flight out.” According to Henry, it would be the first time since toiling for the UFA Bisons that his parents would be able to watch his games with regularity. “Obviously it was a special experience for sure, to play at a high level,” recalled Henry of his days with the herd. “We had a very good team that year and we had a good run at it. “Just to be there – to play at that level, at that age – is definitely a key in my development. I got to play some pretty big minutes there, so it was definitely a stepping stone to the next level.”

The Strathmore Thunder took home yet another victory when they won the gold medal at the Alberta Softball Bantam “B” Girls Provincial which took place July 8 to 10.

Thunder comes out victorious
Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter With 37 games under their belt, the Strathmore Thunder bantam girls team ended the season with the provincial championship, bringing home gold. In the two weeks leading up to the Alberta Softball Bantam “B” Girls Provincial, which took place July 8 to 10, the team played in 15 games, plus practices. “Having that much time on the diamond helps. Scoring 46 runs and allowing only 10 runs in six games demonstrates how it helped,” said coach Lanky Johnson. Johnson said one of the highlights to the weekend, team-wise, was the pre-game meetings. “We could see a look in their faces that said they were ready, seeing the girls have that intensity and focus. Seeing the girls get scrapes and bruises and not wanting to quit,” he said. Megan Lecavalier hit four home runs over the weekend, and in one game had 10 runs batted in. Kirstyn Johnson pitched 32 innings, allowing only nine runs, and she struck out 44 to go with six wins. “Brooke Kennett broke out with strong batting in key situations, and made a great catch in left field to end a potential rally for Lloydminster in a 2-0 Thunder win in round robin that had Jessica Murphy supply the big hit to win the game,” said Johnson.
On behalf of the StrathmOre GOlf Club, to the following who made this years ladies Scramble a huge success! a special thank you to our title sponsor Gregory, harriman & associates!

Alyssa Lavallee led the club with a .450 batting average over the weekend, while Leah Dahm, Hope Tornberg, Bailee Rieger, Brooke Johansen, Brittany Harrison, Payton Bevill, Kaitlyn Brock and Karly Larson all played very well. Away for provincials were Brooke-Lynn Garrioch and Jessier Rieger, who played in league play. “Winning the Calgary city championship and provincial championship is a nice way (to end the season) for all the players. Some who move out from bantam and may not play next year, and for others who return should be proud,” said Johnson. “I am not sure they realize how high they rank as players/team in the sport of fastball in their age bracket. Comments have been asked as to next year for bantam if an “A” level is possible, the answer is yes that it is possible.” Johnson said they are talking with Drumheller about the possibility of having a competitive midget team formed between the two clubs. He said they also hope that winning this title at home will inspire the players in younger ranks as well. Great season The program itself had a great season this year. Squirt Renegades Div. 1, Pee Wee Heat Div. 2 and Bantam Thunder Div. 1 all won gold in Calgary league finals. Pee Wee Blazers Div. 1 added silver in Calgary finals and Mite’s a bronze in their provincial debut. SIlVer SPOnSOrS

How important is your address?
A man just found out that not telling the truth is more than you would want to pay. An Alberta resident deliberately misled the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) when he repeatedly said he lived in B.C. Between 1997 and 2005 this man had 14 accidents involving seven different autos. Recently the courts found that he was someone that tended to be a bad driver and a dishonest person.

Bantam Venom finishes the year strong
Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter The bantam B Venom lacrosse team got to add one more medal to their collection after spending time in Cranbrook, B.C. over the Canada Day long weekend. There were five teams taking part in the tournament, and the bantam B Venom came home with the silver medal, losing only to the Cranbrook team. “We played well. The Cranbrook team was a very strong team, they won the gold medal and they had 20 runners. We were short players, we finished the game off with 10 runners, so we definitely ran out of steam in the gold medal game,” said coach Stephan LeCavalier. The team was down 6-1 in the first period, then came back to bring it to 9-6 after the second. LeCavalier said it was in the third period the team ran out of steam. “It was a good game, they battled hard. I think most of the games we were all down in the first period, (and) we came back. It was a good tournament, the kids had a blast, they really did,” said LeCavalier. “Overall it was great year, very successful. The kids learned (a lot), I must say I’m really proud of them. They had a lot of challenges throughout the year but they battled through a lot of adversity and even though we had a good solid team, we still had our challenges. When it came down to crunch time, they did really well. “It was a great ending to a strong season and the kids had a blast. They came out with another medal and they gave it 100 per cent…there’s not much more you can ask for.” The Strathmore midget Venom team was also at the tournament, where they capped off their season with a bronze medal.

Strathmore soccer teams to play against Edmonton’s best
Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter Strathmore Minor Soccer has three teams taking part in the Inter-cities tournament July 16 and 17. The U12 boys will play in Calgary, while the U12 and U16 girls will be heading to Edmonton. The Inter-cities takes place annually, and sees the top teams from Calgary pitted against the top teams from Edmonton for each tier. “I’m not really surprised. The U12 I knew was going to go just because we had such a really good season. The U16, we had a rough start but we kind of all pulled together as a team and they started to really pick it up,” said Chantal Smith, assistant coach for the U12 and U16 girls teams. “You could really see a lot of the girls working together and really picking up what Ken (Oliphant) was teaching them, and they were really starting to come along.” Some of the team members won’t be at Inter-cities, and Smith said they had to pull a few players from last year, which will lend a different dynamic to the game. She feels the top things the U16 girls need to focus on is communication, passing and just focusing on the game. Georg Nobiling, the U12 coach, said this is the first year his team has been able to qualify for Inter-cities out of the seven years he has been coaching, and they are excited. For the U12 boys coach Simon Pritchard, the team is sitting right where he wanted them to be. The team he taught in the winter made it into third place in Tier 5, and he wanted to see the same thing happen with this team. The current team made it into second place. “I said to them when we started, ‘I think we’re good enough to be in the top three’, and to get the top two is a big achievement for them,” said Pritchard. “We wanted to match the winter team and we’ve actually excelled by one place which has been really good.” Pritchard said he is trying to raise the ability and skill level in Strathmore. He has a range of players, from higher-level to low-level, and he said by having such a mix on the team he has found it quickly raised the skill of the low level players. “Some of the guys have never played outdoor soccer, or indoor, competitively before. They now understand it’s not just about turning up and running around, it’s actually how you play as a team and how you defend, as well as you attack,” said Pritchard. He said they have the lowest goals conceded in their league and the defensive work has become very good. Though Pritchard wants his team to be competitive, he wants them to play in a positive way. “We don’t commit fouls, we don’t be disrespectful to the opposition or the refs. They go about it through hard work and teamwork as well as individual ability.” One of Pritchard’s goals for the team in Inter-cities is to win against the other Calgary team. The boys had played them a few weeks ago and Pritchard said it was a really wet day. Mix that with a 6:30 p.m. kick off at a field in northwest Calgary, forced some players to struggle to make it in time. Pritchard said the boys started off the game great, then they fell apart. “My main aspiration is to do well against that team. They weren’t particularly magnanimous when they beat us either, they were a bit cocky. It’s not a revenge game but, it would be nice to show them we’re better than that game which I know we are,” said Pritchard. Winning Inter-cities, or at least faring very well could help show that Strathmore teams have the ability to play in high-level competitive soccer. Intercities is set to begin July 16, and each team will play at least three games.

CALLING ALL CREATIVE ARTISTS AND CRAFTERS
Have you been wondering where those entry forms are for the upcoming Heritage Days Creative Arts Show? Are you wondering if your entries will qualify? This year the Creative Arts Committee has decided to change our format a bit to allow better focus on our Heritage. We will be offering the Creative Arts salute to the FIRST HUNDRED YEARS in the Civic Center. There will be four main classes to enter - Original Art (any medium), Photography, Quilting, and Handicrafts (including woodworking). For interest and entertainment we also chose Heritage Cookbooks for an additional display. “It’s interesting to see some of the measurements used to come up with those prize winning creations that Grandma used to make.” commented Lynn Walker, chair of the committee. All items will be for DISPLAY ONLY. We will not have the Department of Agriculture judges critiquing each entry. This expands the opportunity for people to enter items they have submitted in past years as well as items they own that have been crafted by other friends or family members over the past hundred years. New Items entered for display this year will be eligible for judging next year as we once again resume the format previously followed. The PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDSwill offer the only prizes won. Public voting will occur all day Saturday with ballots being handed out as you enter the hall. First, second and third place prizes will be awarded in each of the four classes and prize winners will be announced on the Encana Stage, Sunday morning following Cowboy Church at around 11:00 am. If you have entries you would like to submit for display, forms can be picked up at the Ag Society Office or from any of the committee members. Entries will be accepted on Friday, July 29th from 4:00 to 7:00 pm in the Civic Center. The Creative Arts show will be open to the public as follows: Saturday, July 30 10:00 to 6:00 Sunday, July 31 10:00 to 6:00 In addition to the displays, Saturday will offer a fashion show of clothing over the past millennium. This will begin at 2:00 pm. Sunday will offer spinning demonstrations all afternoon and will take you on the journey from sheep to shawl. Entertainment by the HUGS choir at 2:00 will provide a relaxing ambiance as you are taken on a musical journey through the past hundred years. Come, enjoy and sing along if you are so inclined. Another feature this year will be the Coffee Corral where coffee and cookies will be provided for anyone taking in the craft show. “What a great opportunity to showcase our heritage. The Committee is looking forward to providing a quality show that can be enjoyed by all ages. We hope everyone will take the opportunity to come join us as we salute THE FIRST HUNDRED YEARS ” said Walker. The Strathmore Reds AAA team was up against Sherwood Park Gold on July 9. The Reds were able to pull a victory out of the weekend.

Reds win the weekend
Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter With only 10 games and provincials left to go, the Reds AAA baseball team is working hard to get back to the .500 mark. “The first month and a half we were just a little inconsistent, we were missing a few players that were away at Vauxhall Academy,” said coach Darwin Armitage. “We’ve been doing pretty good once they’ve came back, and it’s kind of turning our season around that’s for sure.” This past weekend, July 9 and 10, the midget boys were up against Sherwood Park. In the first game of the day on the 9th, both teams were playing a tough game, and at the bottom of the sixth they were tied at 3-3. The wind didn’t help things, and there were a

high number of pop flies being hit, but the Reds still came out on top. The Reds finished up with a 3-1 record over the weekend, bringing them closer to .500. Despite only 10 games being left, and the team seeming to finally pull together now, Armitage thinks the timing is right. “I think we’re kind of peaking at the right time, (we’re) just looking forward to good things here down the stretch,” said Armitage. The boys had another crack at bringing their average up on July 13, though the results weren’t available as of press time. July 19 will be the last home game for the boys, beginning at 7 p.m. After that, a majority of the games will be in Sherwood Park, said Armitage. Provincials will take place at the end of July.

Hazel Rita Laycock, age 81 years of Strathmore Alberta, passed away July 6, 2011 surrounded by her immediate family and the compassionate care of the staff of the Acute Care Wing of the Strathmore Hospital. Left to celebrate and remember her smile, laughter and humor are: her husband, Raymond Alexander Laycock; her children, Margaret Anne Moore (husband James M. Robinson) of Cochrane, AB, Theresa Lynn Schwab (husband Larry Schwab) of North Battleford, SK, Rayder Alexander Laycock (wife Jenny Laycock) of Standard, AB; her grandchildren Amanda Weir, Axel Weir, Lillian Laycock and Jarrod Laycock; her siblings John Forsgren of Saskatoon, SK and Janet Schnell (husband Buzz Schnell) of Regina, SK; her longtime family friend Helen Clements and numerous friends and acquaintances who were enchanted by her love of life, wit, and kindness. Our memories of Hazel includes her adventures as a one-room school teacher in the communities of Macrorie, Senlac, and Pinkham in Saskatchewan; her forbearance of a husband whose hobbies included military reserve, motorcycle racing, hunting and competitive shooting; her many years delivering the Calgary Herald which provided her with both the excuse and opportunity to form friendships; her devotion to her family that was expressed in numerous celebrations and festive dinners; her marvellous ‘green thumb’ that produced fairy-like gardens complete with elves; her long conversations that featured a forever flowing coffee pot and homebaked cookies; her genuine interest in other people and her generous attempts to assist them during their times of trouble, and her role as a loving grandmother whose greatest delight was playing with and spoiling her grandchildren. Hazel’s predeceased siblings include: Doug Forsgren, James Forsgren, Marjorie Swannie, and Edna Roberts. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. For Hazel’s friends and acquaintances in Alberta, the family is planning an Open House during which we will share our memories over a cup of coffee and cookies.
