Kohler teen earns
Eagle Scout

Kohler Boy Scout Troop 831 is
pleased to announce the advancement of Hank Biznek to Eagle
Scout.
Aside from living the principles of
the Scout Oath, Hank, who will be
a senior at Kohler Schools, obtained the rank of Eagle by serving
in several Troop leadership positions, earning a total of twentynine merit badges, and planning,
developing, fundraising, and providing leadership to others on an
approved service project.
Biznek lead a team of Troop members and volunteers in over 200
hours of community service to repurpose, paint, and install industrial

cabinets at the concessions stand in
Ebben Field, Kohler Public Schools’ multi-sport complex.
In very recent years, roughly six per cent of scouts have become
Eagle Scouts, yet since the award’s inception in 1912, only two per cent
of all Boy Scouts have achieved the rank.
Hank Biznek’s Court of Honor ceremony was held at the Waelderhaus in Kohler, Wisconsin on June 12, 2015.

Thomas Anthony Gallagher, Jr. (1929-2015)
Thomas Anthony Gallagher, Jr.,
loving husband, father, and grandfather, of Hot Springs Village,
Arkansas, passed away on June 26,
2015 at the age of 85.
Tom was the only child of
Thomas and Anna (Jenks) Gallagher. He was born in Chicago,
Illinois on August 6, 1929. Prior to
moving to Hot Springs Village
Tom spent many years in the
Chicagoland area and Kohler, Wisconsin.
Tom led a very active and fulfilled family, career and community minded life. He was especially
proud of his children, grandchildren and his Irish heritage. He attended Quincy College, in Quincy,
Illinois where he played baseball,
football and studied business. He
met and married Arlene Albrecht
of Chicago, Illinois in 1958 and together they had five wonderful
children.
Over his career Tom held sales
leadership positions at Texaco, Upjohn and North American Urethane. He was extremely proud of
the patent he received for co-inventing an application gun that allowed urethane foam to be applied
commercially by manufacturers as
insulation.
Tom lost Arlene in 1978 after
her 5 year battle with cancer. In
1980 he was blessed to meet Joyce
Achatz of Sheboygan, Wisconsin.
Joyce and Tom were married in
August, 1981. Joyce and Tom

spent 33 wonderful years together
the last 26 in Hot Springs Village.
Tom had many interests and was
very active in religious, political
and social organizations throughout his life. In addition to those
pursuits he also got his private
pilot’s license and his real estate license.
While living in Hot Springs Village, Tom participated in productions with the Village Players, sang
in the Village Men’s Choir, and
was a supporter of the Concert Association, the Arkansas Symphony
and Heifer International.
He enjoyed Hot Springs Village
and supported it by volunteering as
a POA Ambassador, working as a
Golf Marshall at Coronado, at the
Magellan Golf School and even
running for the Justice of Peace of
Saline County, twice! Tom, was
also a member of the Village Wisconsin Picnic Committee and the
Village 40th Anniversary Committee. Tom also worked outside the
Village at the Oak Lawn Race
Track in Security and as a Red
Coat Ambassador.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce
and five children, daughter Kathy
(husband Joseph) Voskuil of
Janesville, Wis.; son Tom (wife
Joan) Gallagher of Farmington,
Minn.; daughter Colleen (companion Josh Powell) Gallagher of
Chicago, Ill.; son Michael (wife
Leanne) Gallagher of Springfield,
Ill.; and son Patrick Gallagher of

Chicago, Ill.; and his 10 grandchildren. (Adam, Leah, Peter, Anne,
Samantha, Christian, Megan, Ellen
(Bina), Tommy and Kate.
Tom was a member of Sacred
Heart Catholic Church and participated in the Men’s Club, Knights
of Columbus, sang in the church
choir and was a cantor. A memorial
service with a reception immediately following celebrating Tom’s
life, will be held at 11a.m. on August 1 at Sacred Heart Catholic
Church located at 295 Balearic
Road, Hot Springs Village,
Arkansas, 71909. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the
Thomas A. Gallagher Family Trust

to create a permanent memorial in
remembrance of Tom to be placed
on one of the golf courses in Hot
Springs Village.

Fondest memories growing up in
Kohler: So many! Hiking in the
woods. Walking or taking my bike
to school. Playing basketball for
Kohler and also so many fun pickup games on the outdoor courts behind school.

What was most memorable
about attending Kohler Schools,
and how did the education at
KHS help this grad attain their
goals?: Such intelligent and literate teachers!
I attended Kohler Kindergarten
through 10th grade so I didn't
graduate there, but I certainly feel
like those years were dear and crucial for me.

for 33 years! Two years in Waupaca, Wis.; five years in Westfield, Wis.; and 26 years in
Blackfoot, Idaho
Retired from teaching in 2008
(same year as Brett Favre was
suppose to!)
Currently work part time in a
wine bar in Blackfoot and love it!
Fondest memories growing up
in Kohler: I loved the Graduation
experience! Walking down the
bowl and signing our names with
a scroll pen on Scroll night was so
fun! I remember, of course, doing
the May Pole dance in fifth grade!
Having the Youth Center was so
much fun and all our friends gathered there a lot! The swimming
pool was wonderful, too, and having that as a part of our P.E.
classes was great! I loved going to
the Kohler Co. Christmas parties
at the auditorium and of course
who could forget the Kohler Co.
summer picnics! What a blast
they were!!
What was most memorable
about attending Kohler Schools,

and how did the education at
KHS help this grad attain their
goals? Growing up in the 60’s
was great! Kohler High School
had such great teachers and small
classes enabled us to get a great
education because we got lots of
attention!! I loved Sharon Lindblad as our choir teacher and she
believed in me and talked me into
going to college to get my teaching degree even though I was not
an honor student! I did get my degree and had 33 wonderful years
teaching kids with disabilities! I
didn't realize what a great place
Kohler was until I moved away! I
was very blessed having been
raised there and my roots are still
there!
I love to travel and see and do
things! I actually had visited all
50 states before I turned 40! That
is the blessing of being a teacher!
Summers off are great! I am also
into fitness and exercise. I was an
aerobic dance instructor for several years and still take classes at
the gym. I love Zumba and Spin
classes. I also walk a lot and love
being outdoors. I am married to a
wonderful man named Alan who
is also a terrific teacher. He is still
teaching eighth grade science here
in Blackfoot. When I tell friends
about Kohler, they are amazed at
what a wonderful place it was and
still is!

support because the dwindling interest made it impractical to continue investing their staff time or
effort. The SCTA then turned to
the Sheboygan YMCA who assisted with the tournament in
2008 through 2010. With participation still low and the tournament still struggling, the SCTA
took a hiatus from 2011 thru
2013. The SCTA approached
Sports Core about resurrecting the
tournament in 2014. It was very
successful

age/ability divisions and more
than 70 players participating. Darren Opel is hoping to see this
year’s tournament host 100+
players, reminiscent of his father’s founding efforts.
The first SCTA junior tennis tournament founded by Dr. Doug Opel in 1991 drew more than 100 participants.

golf team receives
academic honors
The Golf Coaches Association
of Wisconsin (GCAW) is proud to
announce the recipients of the 4th
annual “Team Academic All-State”
award, established to recognize
high school golf teams with the
highest team grade point averages
(“team” is defined as the five designated golfers on the roster for the
spring 2015 WIAA regional tournament).
The three teams with the highest
cumulative team GPA in each division (D1, D2, D3) will be recognized with gold, silver, or bronze

medals for each student-athlete,
and their schools will receive a certificate to note this accomplishment. Schools with at least a 3.25
team GPA will receive a certificate
acknowledging honorable mention
status.
Kohler High School finished
with Honorable Mention recognition. Congratulations to the following team members for their
academic accomplishments: Charlie Twohig, Andrew Bryce,
Amanda Egbert, Brady Stefanczyk, Sam Kohler.

held in the Summer of 1991 at
multiple sites across Sheboygan
with well over 100 players between ages 12 and 18 participating. Community Bank & Trust
was the title sponsor with the Sheboygan Parks and Recreation Department as the major partner.
The tournament grew during
the 90’s until the unexpected passing of Dr. Opel from a heart attack
in January, 1998. The tournament
was renamed The Doug Opel Memorial Sheboygan County Jr. Tennis Tournaments, but due to the
SCTA leadership changing hands
many times over the years partic-

ipation dwindled. The late Dr.
Opel’s son, Darren Opel, moved
back to Sheboygan in 2002 and
was asked to assume leadership of
the organization. “There were a
few volunteers, a few programs,
and the local tennis tournament. I
took over leadership and was in
survival mode!” said Opel. “The
event had to combine age groups
and even boys and girls divisions
in some instances.”
Around 2002 the doubles tournament was cancelled. In 2008,
the major partner in the tournament—The Sheboygan Recreation Department—withdrew all

We are very lucky to have
in our library a rich collection of historic photos dating back to the 1920s.
Unfortunately they are not
organized or labeled with
dates or names.
We would like to fix this
problem but we need your
help. If you can make it in
to the library, we can have
you look through some photos and hopefully put some
names with the faces. If you
can’t make it in, we can certainly make copies for you
(about 24 at a time) and deliver them to you.

Luminescence celebrates three
artists exploring light in their
chosen medium. Watercolor
artist Jean Crane (WI)
masterfully captures the life
source and energy of her
subjects by exploiting the
wonderful transparency of the
medium and the sense of light
it creates. Sculptor c.t.
whitehouse (WI) frees the
viewer to appreciate the
remarkable ways light can play
upon a bronze surface by
creating simple forms and using
minimal finishing techniques.
Jeweler Julie Cohn (TX) marries
old-world casting techniques
with a modern aesthetic
allowing the luster of metal and
semiprecious stones to emerge.
All works in this exhibition are
available for purchase. Arts
Center members receive a 10%
discount. Please call 920-4528602 for more information.
