For some time now approximately 30
per cent of the water coming in from Calgary has been getting lost somewhere
once it reaches Strathmore.
One way the town is hoping to determine where at least some of the water
is going is by installing a water meter at
the Strathmore and District Agricultural
Society.
“When we’re paying for a certain
amount, but only collecting for 70 per
cent of what we have to pay the city for,
we want to find out where it’s at,” said
Chief Administrative Officer for the town
Dwight Stanford.
“If you take the water that we’re paying
for coming out of Calgary through the
big meter, we know exactly how much is
coming out, and then take the amount of
water that we sell … we’re short about 30
per cent, and we’re saying ‘where is that
30 per cent? Is it mainly water leaks?’ Part
of it is up at the Ag grounds. We don’t
know what per cent, we want to put the
meter in there so we can find out how
much is really being used up there.”
Councillor Rocky Blokland brought forward the discussion at the July 16 council
meeting, wondering where things stand
since the last fall workshop. Councillor
Brad Walls, who is the acting president of
the Ag Society, excused himself from the
discussion to avoid a conflict of interest.
Stanford said the hope is to install the
meter this September. The new meter will
have to be installed below ground and
will be surrounded by concrete. Quotes
were obtained approximately one year
ago, coming in at the $40,000 range. That
price could change depending on the
bids that come in for the project.
“According to the engineers you can’t
have it above ground where it’s easy to
do,” said Stanford.
“We’re hoping it can be done for cheaper than that price.”
The Ag Society does have a well on the
grounds but it is not tied into the main
water line. The well water is used for
watering the horses, and everything else
is on the potable water lines. The washroom building that has showers also has
a meter attached to it, so the town does
know what is being used there specifically, but not by the Ag Society as a whole.

Strathmore RCMP are currently investigating
a break and enter in the town of Strathmore.
Some time between 7:00 am and 4:00 pm
on July 18th an unknown suspect(s) gained
entry through an open window of a residence
located on Park Road. The suspect(s) left the
residence after stealing some loose change.
If you have any information that could assist
in solving this investigation please contact
the Strathmore RCMP.
Strathmore RCMP are also requesting that
even in this warm weather for residents to
keep the windows of there homes closed and
locked while gone away at work. With the
recent incline of residential break and enters
in Strathmore it appears that the suspects
are gaining entry easily through insecure
windows and doors.

The community of Carseland celebrated 100
years this past weekend, July 18-20, in style. The
festivities kicked off with a ribbon cutting ceremony at Downey Centennial Park. The rest of
weekend was filled with various activities, a community campfire, bouncy houses, face painting,
golf, dinner, a music festival and a special head
shaving where Rita Kruger shaved her head to
help raise funds for a young mom struggling in
the community. The weekend was everything organizers had hoped for, and was a great way to
round out the end of a century.

PORTABLE ISLANDS

The first phase of the Downtown revitalization strategy is well underway. Two
portable islands have been constructed and installed along Second Avenue as
a pilot project. The islands will be removed for the winter season to facilitate
snow removal.
In the future, the islands will be capable of being moved to different locations
in the Downtown Central Zone of the Overlay Bylaw, and will be wheelchair
accessible. For this year, the islands will remain in the current locations for the
entire summer and fall season. This will give the Downtown Design Review
Committee the ability to monitor the pilot project for any issues that need to be
resolved prior to installation next spring.
When the Downtown Design Review Committee selected the locations for the
Portable Islands, it was determined that Second Avenue is currently the most
walkable part of the downtown. The Portable Islands are for sitting, meeting
people and possible enjoying a coffee or lunch, and therefore it was considered
appropriate to locate the islands near eating and drinking establishments. The
island on the north side of Second Avenue is adjacent to a bakery that serves
light lunches and beverages. While there are eating and drinking establishments on the south side of Second Avenue between Lakeside and Second
Street, the Heritage Square currently provides a lovely sitting area, as well
as the green space between the Credit Union and the Theatre on the north
side. The location on Second Avenue between Second and Third Street was
selected due to its proximity to the Co-op, which has a deli, and people could
purchase lunches or beverages and sit on the Portable Island. Sunny locations
were selected to ensure that the islands get the most sun over the May to
October period. In addition, it was determined that since parking stalls would
be eliminated to accommodate the patios, locations that had significant on or
off street parking would be the best options.
This is the first year for the Portable Islands. As previously mentioned, they are
portable and may be sited in different locations next year. It is hoped that the
islands get a lot of use and are enjoyed by all.
We are also looking for feedback and suggestions for improvement from the
public. We are hoping to continuously improve and revitalize the entire Downtown area over the next few years!
Downtown Design Review Committee
The Downtown Design Review Committee consists of two Councillors - Bob Sobol
and Pat Fule, two staff members - Linda Nelson and Betty Ann Fountain, one
member from the Strathmore Regional Arts Collective - Brandy Hebbes, 3 citizens
at large – Glenn Freeland, Robert Breitwieser, Telisa Tebbutt, and the Town’s Planning Consultant - Pat Maloney

Changes at the chamber
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Strathmore and District Chamber of
Commerce Acting President, Joyce Bazant has resigned from the role with
her last day scheduled for August 31.
Initially she took the position of acting
president knowing it was going to be
temporary. Bazant plans to stay on the
board, but is leaving the acting president role for personal reasons.
“It’s a matter of time and the fact I
have a new granddaughter I want to
spend more time with,” said Bazant.
In addition to working with the
chamber, she is the Executive Director
for Wheatland Further Education, Continuing Learning and is a Golden Hills
School Division trustee.
At a recent town council meeting it
was stated the chamber is not doing
well and that memberships are down,
which is really not the case, as there is
continual interest in new memberships.
“We have some excellent board members; although, we are always on the
look-out for new members. If you are
interested in working with the chamber
or feel you have areas of expertise that
would benefit the board please do not
hesitate to contact me or the chamber
office. Remember, we are Strathmore
and District so those from the rural
area are always welcome,” said Bazant.
There are lots of things in store for
the chamber in the upcoming year, including the continuation of the ‘Lunch

“The chamber is the voice of the businesses and through the Alberta and

benefits, especially for the smaller businesses including farmers, like health
and dental insurance,” said Bazant.
The information survey will be on
the chamber website and Bazant asks

Swimmer’s ear is an infection in the outer ear canal
caused by water remaining in the ear after swimming
or bathing. It’s common in the summer months.
Drying the ears well after swimming is part of the
prevention. You can also use a home-made ear drop
of equal parts vinegar and rubbing alcohol to help
the ear dry and the acidity of the vinegar could help
prevent infection.

Have you ever heard of bendopnea? It’s a new
word for a new symptom. Patients with advanced
heart failure often become short of breath when
they bend over. Cardiologists are now looking to
this symptom as a sign the patient needs help soon.
Bendopnea comes from the root word “apnea”
meaning shortness of breath.

Meeting your Wheatland County Reeve
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Reeve has many responsibilities, as he is the president
of Wheatland County and oversees the day-to-day operations
of the area.
Between Koester and his councilors, they want to make the
area a better and safer place to live.
Since being re-elected in 2011, Glenn Koester and his council members are very busy looking for ways to make the county a better place, and voices of community residents are a
crucial part in determining those decisions.
Koester has lived in the county all his life, having grown up
in the Rockyford area on a farm, and still holds the occupation
of a farmer.
He and Lois, his wife of 30 years, have raised their four
children on G&L Koester Farm Limited and really enjoy the
country lifestyle.
“I am still involved in farming … my whole life is (dedicated
to) farming,” said Koester. “We grow wheat, barley, canola and
have a cattle operation and my son wants to continue the
farming operation.”
With all the drier weather that Alberta has seen so far this
summer, the crop situation is stable for Koester’s farm, but
some rain soon would make the situation more favorable.
“So far so good, if we get some moisture (it would be better),” said Koester. “Prices are down on crops and prices are
up on the cattle, so that takes some of the sting off.”
The farm was passed down from Glenn’s uncle to his family.
Lois’ parents also had a farm, so the couple gained a big portion of land that they look after.
Other than being occupied by the farm, Reeve Koester likes
to take his holidays in the winter when it is a slow season
around the acreage.
“In the winter when we had more time (the family) went
skiing up in the mountains to Fairmont and day trips to Sunshine or Lake Louise,” said Koester.
Going down south is always a popular trip, when the snow
starts to fall, to various tropical destinations such as Mexico
and areas in the Caribbean.
In the summer, “I like to go to the Okanagan or someplace
down there that has very little rain and lots of sun. It’s nice to
be by a lake in the summer time,” said Koester. “(As a Reeve)

you get to chair the meetings, signing the papers
(bylaws and cheques), preparing for meetings and
coming in and look at documents.”
Koester had taken interest in the Reeve position
for some time now and knowing the councilors
personally really eased his decision to run.
“I thought I had more time but I really did not
(because of farming) and an opportunity came to
run in a by-election and I took it and got elected,”
said Koester.
As a member of the county, you do not know
what the job entails until the position has started
and do not realize how much work is involved.
To make the transition easier in the office, Koester likes to gather as much information as possible
by going to conferences.
The residents of the towns and surrounding areas are heard and it can be very difficult at times to
meet the demands of the citizens for issues such,
as developments.
For a development to get the go-ahead, the Reeve
has a say in where it goes, along with council because they have to listen to the citizens’ voices.
“I think it depends on the land and where it is

and since I have been in, we have started more
public hearings (which) are more accountable and
open (where the public) can come in and voice
their concerns,” said Koester, who has been a councilor for 11 years and for the last three has been
Reeve.
He likes to see more people moving into the
towns and villages as more growth will result in
the schools and businesses staying open in the
area, and in the future, more development.
For the future of Wheatland County, the Reeve
would like to see more openness and transparency
for residents in the area to voice their concerns.

Summer with
Hope Bridges
WANDA REINHOLDT
Hope Bridges Society Coordinator

There’s singing each week in the park this summer! Each Tuesday from 1-2 p.m., Chuck and Geordie are hosting and leading a Summer Sing-ALong at Lambert Village Park.
It is a free opportunity for all adults in Strathmore and region. You are welcome!
For the past couple of years, Chuck and Geordie have been attending the Hope Bridges Society’s ‘Sing Your High Note’ workshop. And they
love it! They have a great time requesting and
singing their favourite tunes. Sometimes they play
along with their instruments.
‘Sing Your High Note’ is a music therapy workshop facilitated by JB Music Therapy. Multi-generations of adults gather together to share their
favourite songs. It’s not about how well you sing
nor is it about singing a solo. It is about sharing
song requests and singing with others. It is about
connecting in relationship around the music and
with the music in new and different ways. It is a
safe and welcoming place to express and explore.
As there is no music therapy during the summer
and the participants of the weekly music therapy
workshop wanted music to continue during the
summer, Chuck and Geordie offered to host and

lead this summer Sing-A-Long. They are thrilled
to be serving the community in this way, providing a musical enjoyable afternoon in the sun for
all adults and telling the community about Hope
Bridges’ inclusive artistic opportunities.
‘Sing Your High Note’ music therapy returns
to the Strathmore region Sept. 2 (held at Hope
Church on Brentwood Blvd). Registrations are
being accepted now at the Hope Bridges Studio.

Standing up for Israel

KEVIN SORENSON, M.P., CROWFOOT
Parliamentary Report

Canada has always stood up for freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law. Canada is always interested in doing what is right and
just, regardless of whether it is popular, convenient or expedient.
Our Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, has been
very clear when it comes to the current situation
in Israel.
“The indiscriminate rocket attacks from Gaza
on Israel are terrorist acts, for which there is no
justification. Canada is unequivocally behind Israel. We support its right to defend itself, by itself,
against these terror attacks, and urge Hamas to
immediately cease their indiscriminate attacks on
innocent Israeli civilians,” he says. “I’m saddened
to think that human beings are being deliberately
used as shields to further the work of terrorists in
the region.”
As your Member of Parliament, I believe that
our Prime Minister has taken a principled position and is standing up for those suffering from
aggression. Many of our local military veterans
can share with you their personal experiences in
this regard in places far away from our riding and
our nation such as Korea, Cyprus, Bosnia, Kosovo,
Croatia, Somalia, and Afghanistan, among others.

Prime Minister Harper is calling on other nations to do the right thing by standing with Israel
in its time of need. He reminds us that the “failure
by the international community to condemn these
reprehensible actions would encourage these terrorists to continue their appalling actions. Canada
calls on its allies and partners to recognize that
these terrorist acts are unacceptable and that solidarity with Israel is the best way of stopping the
conflict. Canada reiterates its call for the Palestinian government to disarm Hamas and other Palestinian terrorist groups operating in Gaza, including the Iranian proxy, Palestinian Islamic Jihad.”
When there is a battle between democracy and
terrorism, where innocent lives are at stake, we
should be proud Canada is not afraid to take the
principled moral high ground and stand up for
what is right. We will continue to stand up for human rights and promote international security by
standing with Israel. We will continue to ensure
that freedom, democracy, human rights and the
rule of law that define this country, are enjoyed in
Israel and around the world.

Raising funds for a good cause
KYLEE HEBBES
Cheadle 4-H Beef Club

My name is Kylee Hebbes and I am a member
of the Cheadle 4-H Beef Club. We are proud to be
putting a steer up for auction to raise money for Alberta Children’s Hospital. A home raised steer will
be sold on Friday, Aug. 1 during the Chuckwagon
races (between heats three and four) at the Strathmore Stampede.
I was thrilled when the club leader Mrs. Patti
Brewin asked me to speak on behalf of the club. I
am no stranger to the Alberta Children’s Hospital.
When I was born on Jan. 11, 1996 doctors discovered that I had four congenital heart defects. This is
news that no parents want to hear. I had a total of
six heart surgeries the first surgery at nine months
of age and the last just a few years ago. In the
midst of my heart issues, I was also diagnosed with
congenital Scoliosis, a curvature of the spine, this
meant more doctors and more visits. I cannot tell
you how much the doctors, nurses and other staff
became family over the years. Their expertise does
not only lie in these areas of care, they are the best

in all areas. Our visits did not stop with me, as my
dad has a neurological disease that is slowly taking his ability to walk away from him. He is lucky
enough to have the great genetics department at
Children’s that is trying to help him.
The hospital is 750,000 square feet and is full of
some of the best doctors and nurses ever made.
There are 133 rooms for both short-term and longterm patients. The emergency department is set up
to handle 60,000 patients a year.
Take a moment as you are reading this to reflect
on how many children you know, whether it is a
niece, nephew, daughter, son, family friend or complete stranger you saw on the evening news. I am
sure there are several you can think of that have
benefitted from the Alberta Children’s Hospital.
I am here today because this amazing facility was
available. Gather some friends, co-workers, or fellow businessmen and come on down to the Strathmore Stampede and put your hearts together and
your hands up for a great cause.
For more information please call Patti Brewin at

The comeback kid (or geriatric!)
PAT FULE
Fule for Thought
I haven’t played SloPitch in many years. Well, I do
play in my Band PE class, but I always pitch, and
I never bat. I pitch so that if any one gets hit by a
line drive, it’s better that it’s me! Actually, I tease
the Band kids that we never play “catch” in this
class … it’s always just “throw” (we don’t always
catch so well)!
Even the “throw” part is touch and go. This past
June, it took four different kids to actually throw
the ball back to me at the pitcher’s mound! The
ball went over, way to the side, even right through
my feet, but never to my glove!
So after many years of pitching to gym classes,
I finally got the call up to “The Show” … the
big leagues (my kids’ SloPitch team in a Calgary
League).
I was a combination of excited and worried …
what if I really bombed in my debut? What if I
couldn’t hit, or worse, struck out? I’m also not at
my “fighting prime” weight! I knew this when my
son told me I’d be playing first base. First, I was
flattered; that’s a pretty important position! You’re
involved in a lot of plays. Then he gave me his reason: “if you play first Dad, you won’t have to run
for balls in the field, and then have to run again
when you bat! Ouch, that hurt … but I guess he
was trying to prevent my stroke or something!
Now, you might think this next part is strange, but
I spent Friday night watching YouTube videos on
“How to Play first base,” and “How to Bat in Softball!”
I decided if I was going to play, I needed some private coaching. I’d been walking lately, ran a basketball camp this week, and even took a hot bath
on Saturday to prepare! I followed this by using
“baseball stretching” videos as well! I was going to
be ready for my debut!
My first at bat was pretty uneventful. I hit a weak
grounder to the infield, and couldn’t beat out the
throw to first. Deb said I slowed down, but I think
you have to be actually running fast, to then slow
down! I now know that my sprinter days are winding down, especially after I saw the cell phone video of myself batting! Here’s helpful hint: if you’ve
put on some weight … don’t wear a bright white
t-shirt on a sunny day! I know they say the camera

adds 10 pounds, but this looked worse!
I batted well Saturday, and went 8 for 9! However,
on one of my “blistering” runs to first base, I felt
it. It was electric … like a shock! It was an instant
shot of pain in my right hip, and I couldn’t even
push off that foot! Luckily, I had time to hobble to
first and get a pinch runner. So, for the rest of the
games, I got to have my son run for me at every
“at bat!”
I felt like a specialist … limp up and bat, then
watch a young guy in shape, sprint the bases. It
was like having a butler … “Jeeves, run and sweat
for me, would you? Oh, and I’d like you to get me
a triple, this time!”
It was pretty cool … I felt like a boss!
The game took me back to my old days on the
Canmore Pistols’ Fastball team. You might remember them from an earlier column as “the worst
team in the history of fastball!”
We finished our first season with an incredible
0-24 record, and as the centre fielder, I never ran
so much in my life! There were regular, towering
hits to the field, or screaming line drives that I’d
have to chase down. It was horrible! In one game,
one of our batters (who had never played baseball
before) was hit by a fastball on the hand. It tore
back the skin on his knuckles, and there was blood
everywhere. After he stopped crying, the umpire
sent him to first. Somehow, he got to second, and
the next batter hit to right field. This guy rifled the
ball to try and get that guy out on third base. He
got him out alright, the ball hit this poor guy right
in the back of the head! He lay there with a bloody
hand, holding his head with the other hand, and
the umpire called him “out!”
So, I’ve now been told I get to play the rest of summer! My baseball dreams are coming true! I get
to play ball with my kids! That is, if I can just get
this ice pack off my hip and suit up again! I hope
Brennen stretches a lot before we play … I’d like
to get another triple, and I sure don’t want to have
to pull another muscle!
(“Fule for Thought” is a slice of life humourous
column that appears in the Strathmore Times, written by long-time resident, town councillor, high
school teacher, coach, husband and father of two –

Council supports arts festival
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Chair of the Strathmore Regional Arts Collective (SRAC), Brandy Hebbes, came
to town council with a request for continued support of the Arts and Sounds in the
Park Festival at the July 16 meeting.
SRAC has already been out gathering donations and grant funding where they
can for the event, which will be held in September. This year the collective is also
asking artisans to pay a small entry fee to be a part of the event.
“We do wish to keep this fee very nominal so as not want to be prohibitive or
exclusive to any groups or individuals,” said Hebbes.
“In addition to a bigger and better interactive festival on the Saturday, this year
we’ll host a free to the public family friendly concert on Friday evening from 6 p.m.
to 9 p.m.”
The concert, which will be held Sept. 26, will feature two local performers, and
there will be free coffee, hot chocolate and snack for people and $2 hotdogs.
SRAC received an Alberta Cultural Days Grant for $4,000; the grant can only be
used for specific things, such as the supplies for the interactive kids’ and teens’ arts
activities.
The town and Wheatland County will contribute and additional funds raised will
be used to fill in the gaps that the grant doesn’t cover. After the festival an expen-

diture report will be given to both the town and county councils so they can see
where the funds have been spent.
Last year in the park there were approximately 43 visual and performing artists,
and the Art Walk, hosted the Wheatland Society of Arts, saw about 16 artisans. The
Art Walk will not be returning this year, but there are hopes that it will be back in
future years once the event has grown more.
“This year we want to take the gazebo at Kinsmen Park and make an art show
per se for some artists that don’t have whole booth, maybe they just have a few
pieces that way they can get in on it too, and then all around the gazebo will be
working artists painting and doing whatever they are doing,” said Hebbes.
There will be an option for artists to have a full booth at the festival. Hebbes said
they also hope to feature a sign-up centre where kids, teens and adults can go to
sign-up for various classes being offered by some of the artisans.
“There is opportunity for Youth Club and Say and SWAT to join together in terms
of presentation but also in terms of being vendors, SRAC is looking for vendors at
the park so it is an opportunity for other clubs to raise money as well,” said Councillor Denise Peterson.
Including the youth groups in the community is something the SRAC board has
thought of and is excited at the possibility of doing.
A motion was made and approved by council to once again support the Arts and
Sounds in the Park Festival with a monetary contribution of $2,500.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Looking for responsible government
To the Editor
I recently learned about our re-alignment for the
2015 federal election. I took the time to look at it after
being invited to meet with Rob Anders, who is hoping
to raise support to become our MP of the new riding.
I thought maybe the readers would be interested
in this since everything I can find or remember about
Rob Anders leaves much to be desired. Falling asleep

in parliament multiple times is not what I call “responsible” government. His comments regarding veterans are also not indicative of how I want our veterans honored. I for one am not impressed. I have
always been a PC supporter, but I could never vote
for Anders!

ARCHITECT OF YOUR FUTURE
The sign outside the high
school read, “Every person
is the architect of their own
future.”
I saw this message numerous
times and could not help but
think about it.
In many ways it is true; you
are the architect of your
own future. It’s an important
message for people to know especially young people. Your
decisions matter. What courses
you choose, what activities you
decide to partake in, who you
call friends; how you chose to
make a living, how you treat the
environment, how you spend
your money – all matter. These
things not only influence today
but have a bearing on what
tomorrow will look like; the
architect of your own future.
But there is much in life we
have no control over. You have
no control over which family
you are born into. It may be a
loving home; it may be an abusive home. You have no control
over what other people do; if
someone ignores the red light
and hits you mid-intersection
you live with the consequenc-

es. I know of no one who would
chose ALS, or cancer, or lung
disease. Are you the architect
of your future?
Yes, and no. Your decisions
matter and the most important
decision anyone can make is
to follow Jesus. In choosing
Jesus you are anchored in the
past. The biblical story goes
back thousands of years and as
you allow this story to anchor
your life it will inform and animate the present. This story will
allow you to be fully present in
the here and now; fully present
to face current challenges and
opportunities.
This is true because the biblical
story tells us of a just and loving God who is faithful - always.
It tells of a God revealed in
Jesus who surrounds us, and
gives us life, life in abundance.
By focusing your eyes on Jesus
you are equipped to deal with
all life has to offer; all that you
are able to control and all that
you are not.
May you find the blessing of
abundant life; a life lived with
Jesus.

Gearheads gather in Rosebud
The fourth annual Gearheads Custom and Classic Car/Truck show was held at
High Eagle RV Resort just outside of Rosebud on July 20. Along with the many
custom and classic vehicles there was live entertainment, door prizes, a 50/50
draw and plenty of food.
Left photo: High River’s Dan Hawken stands next to his custom 1953 Monarch
two door sedan. It took Dan and his wife Dianne three years and 6,000 hours to
transform this beauty from a rusted shell to its current state. All that work was
nearly washed away during the flood last year as the Hawkens were given about
10 minutes to gather some of their possessions and leave their home. Needless
to say, the car was among the rescued items.

Feed a Steer
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

The Cheadle Lions Club is initiating a new fundraising
project for the community this fall. The Lions are looking
to purchase one steer from 20 different elite cattle producers. The steers will then be part of the Feed a Steer project.
Funds raised from the project will be donated back into the
community to help families and organizations that need assistance with health related issues.
“We, our Lions Club, are always looking for projects to get
people interested. Years ago we had our Food Grains project
and that brought a lot of interest from the community and it
kind of ran its course there after a while for various reasons,”
said Sonny Warrack, head of the Feed a Steer committee.
“I think this is a good time with cattle prices the way they
are, there’s some new life in the industry and maybe this is
a good time to do this.”
The steers purchased will all also become part of an average daily gain contest, to see which gains the most weight
from October to May. For example if a steer comes in weighing 600 lbs on day one, and weighs 925 on day 100 then
it would have gained 3.25 lbs per day, which will then be
compared to the gain from the other steers to see which
gained the most.
“At the end of the feeding program these will be fat, finished steers,” said Dale Cockx, incoming president for the
Cheadle Lions.
“We have talked to a few people that are producing cattle
and the initial response is very positive, they are very excited
about participating and doing something like that with their
animal.”
Each cattle producer that enters a steer into the project
will be required to pay a fee of $300, and from that the prize
money for the Top 3 weight-gaining steers will be gathered.
Other people in the community will also have a chance to
get in on the project. There are different ‘steaks’ people can
purchase to help sponsor the project and sponsorship levels
range from $50 for the minute steak, up to $1,000 for the
filet mignon.
“The concept here is it is just a little fun. The minute steak
is the cheaper, and a round steak is a little more expensive
and a rib steak and the filet mignon is the ultimate,” said
Cockx.
“We’re (also) going to promote grain companies, fertilizer
companies, implement dealerships and we will hope they
will all be there bidding on these steers to raise the price up
so that we can raise additional money over and above what
we’re going to sell here as individual steaks.”
In the spring of 2015 there will be a big BBQ and a live
video auction at the Cheadle Hall for all of the producers
and sponsors. The idea is to auction off the steers to raise
even more funds.
“We’re just looking for ways to have relative projects that
engage the community, and that’s what we feel we had with

the Food Grains and that’s what we hope we have with this
one,” said Warrack.
The official kick off for the Feed a Steer project will happen during Heritage Days at the Beef on a Bun booth hosted
by the Cheadle Lions.
Anyone who would like to get involved can either find out
more at the booth, or by contacting one of the committee
members. Sonny Warrack can be reached at 403-934-4186,
Dale Cockx at 403-934-3705 or Marlene Risdon at 403-6603650.

REMEMBERING OUR ROOTS ~

Simon Vanderploeg

JOHN GODSMAN
Times Contributor
Simon’s family originated in Freisland, Holland. The name
‘Vanderploeg’ when split into three words means Van - from,
Der - the, Ploeg - plow.
His father came to Southern Alberta in 1911, when the
Canadian Government and CPR were
advertising “Come to Canada, the Land
of Milk and Honey!”
His father spent a year here, then
went back to Holland, got married and
brought his new wife here, in 1913. His
father suffered from asthma, and the
drier climate of Southern Alberta was
good for him, but liver cancer took his
life at age 62. He enjoyed the quality of
life Canada gave him. Simon’s parents
never learned how to drive a vehicle,
but certainly knew how to drive a horse
and buggy.
Simon was born in High River in
March in 1931, the youngest of five
children. He had an older brother and
three sisters. When he was 14 years old,
they lived on a 10 acre parcel of land,
south of High River. One day his mother
needed to be taken to High River hospital, and there was no
one around to drive her except Simon. Their car was a 1927
Pontiac sedan, four door, with 21-inch wooden spokes in
the wheels. Simon drove his mother to the hospital without
incident, but when they got there, he wasn’t allowed to accompany his mother into her room, because he was under
age 16! After a short period of time, a nurse came along and
asked why he wasn’t with his mother. Simon pointed to the
sign on the wall that stated “No one under the age of 16
years could visit” anyone in the hospital. She replied, “well I
saw you drive her here, so on you go!”
Later that year, his father purchased a grain farm east of
Brant, which is in Vulcan County, and they all moved there.
Brant, at that time, had a CPR Station, and nearby was the
Section Foreman’s house; there were five grain elevators, a
combined Pool Hall and Barber Shop, a hotel, a Chinese
restaurant, two grocery stores, a Beaver Lumber yard, where
Simon purchased .22 rifle for $20! Dixon’s Garage was the
Imperial Oil agent, and sold gas; and Scott’s Blacksmith
Shop - rounded out the local businesses.
Simon attended all his schooling through Grade 9 at the
three-room school in Brant. Grades 1-6 were in one room,
Grades 7-9 were in a second room, and Grades 10-12 were in
the third room. Before school, Simon and his sister Elizabeth
peddled fresh milk and cream around town, using a horse
and buggy in the summer, and a cutter in the winter.
He remembers a full size quart cost 10 cents (delivered).
At harvest time, if Simon was at school his Dad would just
go and get him, saying “time for harvest,” and would take
him out of school to drive the tractor, pulling a Holt Combine that his brother operated! He was around 13 years of
age at the time. Simon says he learnt a lot at Brant School
- how to fight, escape from teachers, respect girls, and play
softball, hardball and hockey! The first time he pitched a
baseball game, they won against a strong High River team.
His father arranged with George Gould, that he would teach
Simon to learn carpentry. After school and on Saturdays, he
learned how to build cupboards for their house and neighbours. There was no pay, just the opportunity to learn. His
carpentry skills stood him in good stead throughout his life.
He also attended what is now known as SAIT in 1947/48,
where he took farm construction and mechanics.
In 1948, there was a very heavy snowfall in the late winter, which caused major flooding due to the amount of run
off. CPR culverts and bridges were too small, which caused
the water to run over Hwy 23, four miles north of town,
and filled the big slough, so that the water ran through Ed
Prater’s farm yard.
Simon took a keen interest in everything farming had to
offer, from an early age. He helped to butcher beef, pigs and
chickens. Then in 1950, he rented some of the family land
and started farming. This was a very good year. But, the following year, 1951, was very wet, and few farmers were able
to complete harvesting before winter arrived. Simon remembers combining in April and May 1952, as the ground dried.
There were so many mice! But, it did turn out to be a good
year.
Simon’s wife Welly was born in Bolsward (Fr) the Netherlands, in September 1926. Her parents and nine of their 11
children immigrated to Canada in 1949. Welly and another
sister came to the Picture Butte area in 1950, finding their
family working on a sugar beet farm. For the next few years
her family moved to various areas, and eventually settled in
Vulcan, where Welly and her brother Fred operated the Vulcan Bakery. It was while she was working here that she met

her husband-to-be, Simon. They were married on March 4,
1953 and had five children.
Welly passed away on July 22, 1988 following a battle with
acute leukemia. In 1991, Simon married Elizabeth Friesen,
and they lived in the Namaka area for five years, before moving to Strathmore in 1996.
In the 1960s, Simon attended the Western College of Auctioneering in Billings, Mont. It was a
two-week course, and there was only
room for 30 students. To this day, he still
enjoys auctioneering.
He has led a full life of volunteering. He was Division 9 Councillor in
Vulcan County for 13 years, served on
the School Committee at Brant School
(until it closed) for seven years. Served
for 13 years on the Agricultural committee, served with the Municipal Planning
Committee, the Disaster Committee, and
experienced a Court of Revision, where
landowners could discuss and sometimes receive a deduction in their taxes.
Why would anyone agree to pay taxes
for land that was covered by a slough? Or
where power or railway lines crossed?
He has volunteered at Camp Chestermere for many years, and still serves on
the board, and has worked as a volunteer in the past at
the Strathmore Crisis Shelter, where his carpentry skills have
produced many useful wooden items. He proudly showed
me all the awards and plaques he has received throughout
his lifetime, acknowledging his achievements.

Co-founders of Crowfoot Ag Solutions Christina and Andy Stender cut the ribbon on the new stateof-the-art Ag cement dome just outside of Strathmore on July 16.

As agriculture increases its growth,
the demand for retail will rise and more
facilities need to be opened.
Crowfoot Ag Solutions has opened
a state-of–the-art cement dome facility
east of Strathmore that will operate to
meet the farmer’s needs in the Wheatland County area.
Co-founders of Crowfoot Ag Solutions, Andy and Christina Stender are
really honoured to open an ag retail
facility like this to be able to meet the
community’s needs.
“The reason we chose the concrete
dome concept is it provides the ability
to have the ultimate product safety for
our customers,” said Stender. “We can
store not only a lot of product, but it
allows us good safe storage so the quality product (on the farmers end) … do
not have any issues with their supply.”
With the concrete dome concept, it
gives a new outlook for farmers and
where they want to receive their product.
“We are not going to run out of product and rely on a truck to come two
(or) three times a day to fill the plant.
The speed of the plant both on receiving the product from the manufacturers
to customers is as fast or twice as fast
as any of (the) competitors,” he said.
Stender and his family started the
company. There is a long-line of farming history in the family.
“My dad came from a farm in Saskatchewan and years ago moved out to
Calgary … we always had the farming
roots in us,” said Stender.
As a result of the farming roots,
Stender met his wife Christina who is
originally from Ontario where she went
to the University of Guelph.
“She moved out to Strathmore and
we ended up meeting and together we
drove the passion and built the idea in
an attempt to provide something to the
local producers,” said Stender.
Strathmore-Brooks MLA Jason Hale,
who is a farmer in the area, could not
have been more amazed by the new
domed facility, as the farmers will benefit from this immensely.
“It is great for the area, and we know
that agriculture is very important … the
more ag business we can develop and
bring into the constituency does nothing but good for the local communities,
” said Hale.
Hale believes that the increased supply will help in the long-term operations of farmers.
“It is good to have some competition
and great to see a small family company develop in something that is great,”
said Hale.
The Stender family is hopeful that
this will be a successful farming operation for many years to come.

Music inspired by Rosebud,
performed for Rosebud
LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor

When Rosebud Chamber Music Festival opened in 2013, the community was
fundraising for their new grand piano.
Samuel Deason, one of the festival
pianists, promised that if sufficient
money was raised during the festival,
he would compose a piece of music in
celebration.
The money was raised, the piano was
paid for, and Deason kept his promise.
On July 30, at the 2014 Rosebud Chamber Music Festival (RCMF), he’ll perform the world premiere of Rosebud
Variations on Rosebud’s grand piano,
dedicating it to the very people who
made the piano possible.
Five other musicians also performed
with Deason in the festival’s opening
season, and Keith Hamm, the festival
director, is pleased they’re all returning
for a second year.
“We had such a wonderful time last
year,” Hamm wrote in an e-mail, “We
can’t wait to share some of our favourite music with this amazing community.”
During the year, Hamm plays viola
with the Canadian Opera Company.
Sheila Jaffe, a violinist, has been completing her master’s degree in Berlin,
Germany, working with a major orchestra there. The other four company
members also perform across the coun-

try and around the world. This summer,
all six are performing together at music
festivals across Canada.
But for all of that, they say, there’s
something special about performing in
Rosebud.
“Just getting to know the town and
the people was ... a truly special experience,” Jaffe said in an e-mail. “All the
other musicians were so inspiring and
it was exciting to have such a happy
audience.”
The musicians “love the chance to get
out of the big city and be creative in
such a special place,” said Hamm. “The
Rosebud community welcomed Rosebud Chamber Music Festival with open
arms and the musicians appreciated the
chance to connect with locals on a personal level.”
And it’s a treat to introduce their music to new audiences.
“For many RCMF audience members,
attending chamber music concerts is
a very new experience,” Hamm said.
“RCMF performers love the chance to
share some of our favourite music with
people who may be experiencing it for
the first time.”
They bring something special to audiences, too.
“Audience (members) loved getting
to know the artists throughout the
week,” said Hamm. “The performances
at RCMF are especially intimate and
audiences appreciate the close connec-

Lift station replacements
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

The Westmount lift station has been in operation since the
1970s and is in desperate need of repairs. EPCOR representatives and Director of Operations and Engineering for the
town, Jesse Parker, spoke to town council on July 16 about
the project.
A lift station is usually the term used in reference to sewage. Because sewage runs downhill, when it gets to a low
point and can’t go down anymore, it is lifted and then will
run downhill again.
“You don’t want it under pressure because if you lose a
pipe you don’t want sewage spraying everywhere, so you
generally let gravity do the work … you have to lift it to
elevations to do that,” said Dillan Buckingham, project manager for EPCOR.
The Westmount lift station services approximately 40
homes and is quickly reaching the end of its life. A lift station consultant came to Strathmore to assess the current station and found many issues.
The most serious concerns are the lid is degraded to the
point it is recommended that no one stand on it, which has
to be done to access areas of the lift station.
Because it is partially above ground there is a ladder to
climb up, which is corroded to the point of falling apart. All
of the electrical is no longer serviceable, with many parts
unavailable if anything were to fail.
The scope of the project is to replace the lid, ladders and
guide rails, PLC, the control panel, starters and SCADA communications.
There will also be the addition of an access platform inside

[email protected]

the wet well for valve maintenance, new piping and valves,
safety rails on top of the wet well as well as an emergency
bypass. Modern instrumentation will be added including
level switches, a level transmitter and flow meter, and a new
back-up generator.
Last fall a capital project was created for the lift station
with $477,000 dedicated to the project. The final estimates
and quotes came in lower than initially thought. The final
estimate for the project, including a 20 per cent contingency,
comes out to $414,914.40.
Buckingham informed council that EPCOR has plans to go
door-to-door to the homes affected to inform them of what’s
happening. A portion of the street will be closed to allow
access to the uphill manhole, but no service interruptions
are expected.
Council approved the project.

The pulling team of ‘Rock’em,
Sock’em,’ who have Nightingale’s own
Cody Casebeer on the squad, were successful at the heavy horse pull event at
the Calgary Stampede on July 13.
The horses, which were big beautiful
Belgians, had a weigh-in at 3,573 lbs
combined in the heavyweight division.
Casebeer’s team was up against competing teams that had a total of 4,000
lbs combined weight.
“It was a really good experience
there (the Calgary Stampede) - the
heavy horse pull was something I recently got into and wanted to really try
and go on and do stuff locally with,”
said Casebeer.
Most of the pulls that he does are
around Edmonton and it was a nice
change to have a competition close by.
“And the Stampede being a pretty big
stage, it was really amazing to be able
to get in there,” said Casebeer.
Teamster Casebeer, as he is referred
to by his teammates and in events,
used horses Rocky and Sox, and finished with a 9,000 lbs pull, which was
a personal best for this team. The result

was an exceptional one considering the
team has only been together for three
months.
“I had two months to get them (the
team and horses) together and get
them working - it was a bit of a battle
trying to get them to work together … I
got there and they totally surprised me
how the team worked together in pulling,” said Casebeer.
As for competition in this event at the
Calgary Stampede, it was Casebeer’s
first time there.
“I started doing horse pulls as of last
year and quite new to the sport itself,”
said Casebeer.
His parents are his biggest supporters of where he is today and Casebeer
gives all the credit to them.
“We could not have done this without the support of the evener (the person who hitches up the team to pull),
Eric Casebeer (father), and the handler/
groomer Crystal Casebeer (my mother),” he said. “A special thanks goes to
Alberta Carriage Supply, our auction
buyer and our behind the scenes team.”
Casebeer would also like to extend
the thank you to the other teamsters
and the Calgary Stampede heavy horse
pull committee.

will also learn a few things about being a
good person and a good sport.”
Fule designs the camp so the game can
be taught through concepts and drills that
teach sportsmanship and positive attitude
is beneficial from a young age in sports.
“(In the camp), we try to stress good
sportsmanship as we do not keep score and
if you happen to lose a shooting game, (the
players and I) talk about being a good winner as well as being a good loser,” said Fule.
The JETS camp has some very avid
young athletes attend every year because
the players enjoy shooting the basketball

and Coach Fule’s on-court instruction. The
triplet brothers of Josh, Matthew and Isaac
Dirks have been attending the camp for the
past four years.
“What I like about JETS is that we get
to practice our shots and (when there are
certain shooting games) and (they are) fun
to learn and I like taking shots,” said Isaac
Dirks. Isaac has liked basketball since he
was introduced to the camp four years ago.
As for Matthew, he follows what Fule
stresses about having fun while developing
skills on the court.
“I love going to camp because you make
new friends and learn stuff that you have
not learned before,” said Matthew Dirks.
On Coach Fule, “I like that if you do good
(on the skills) and even if we do bad he still
rewards us,” said Dirks.
Being a basketball fan, the Raptors are
Matthew’s favorite team.
The middle brother of the triplets, Joshua, likes the games the group plays other
than the basketball ones.
“I like the treasure hunt and the basketball shooting and JETS (provides a really
fun atmosphere),” said Joshua. He is also a
soccer and baseball player.
As JETS basketball is wrapping up, the
STARS volleyball camp will be taking place
from Aug. 18-22. You can contact Pat Fule
at 403-934-4599 to register.

The Strathmore Midget triple A Reds baseball club had a memorable
trip in more ways than one when they went to Alaska earlier this
month July 6-16.
Their mission ultimately fell short in the semifinals to Team Tennessee at the Anchorage portion of the tournament.
“Our first tournament was in Kenai, Alaska. (We) opened up against
a travel team from California and we beat them 5-1. They were kids
from all over California and the States and (the team) pays to play in
each tournament that have scouts in it,” said Zane Anderson.
The Reds played a tightly contested game in their second game, but
ended up losing a close one to the Alaska host team 2-1.
“In the semifinal (of the Kenai tournament), we ended up playing
a team from Tennessee but the game got rained out in the second inning,” said Anderson.
“After that we travelled to Anchorage where we made the semifinal
(and) played the exact same team from Tennessee … and lost 2-0 to
them, they had a really good team as (their team consisted of) players
from college.”
That team, according to Anderson, was the best team they had
played all year.
The highlight of the tournament was the composure the Reds
showed when scouts were sitting in the stands watching certain players on the diamond.
“Playing in the Anchorage tournament and making the semifinal
playing against Team Tennessee … scouts were in the stands from colleges and even the professionals and performing under pressure with
people watching was the highlight,” said Anderson.
It was not all about baseball when the Strathmore Reds went to
Alaska as the team wanted to take in as much as they could, with the
scenery and a very successful fishing venture.
“We did a bunch of team events, we went salmon fishing one day
and actually (the team) caught 132 fish,” said Anderson.
“All the boys hiked a glacier which was pretty cool. On the final day
we went white water rafting down a river just outside of Anchorage
and supposed to be some of the best rafting in the world with four
or five rapids.”
Anderson also added that the kids just had an absolute blast out on
those rapids and it was one trip that they will never forget.

Strathmore’s Ramsay relished
Florida tournament
JUSTIN SEWARD

Times Reporter

When Ty Ramsay was completing
his Wheatland Inline Hockey Season
(WIHA) at end of June, he was expecting to start his summer like any other
kid this time of year - hanging out with
his friends in the sun.
All that changed, when the Edmonton
based NARCH (North American Roller
Hockey Championship) Team United approached him about playing with them
in the Florida tournament.
The United had an injury prior to the
tournament and Ramsay got called upon
to join the squad for the tournament
from July 11-27 in Estero, Fla., which is a
two hour drive from Miami. Ramsay had
to drive to Edmonton numerous times to
practice with the team before they departed for the tournament
“It was a really great experience down
there (in Estero),” said Ramsay. “Our
team played really well together and our
team (the United) won bronze.”
Coming from a smaller community
like Strathmore and adjusting to the international stage was a difficult task for
Ramsay.
“It was difficult (playing in a big tournament) as I was (very) nervous” said
Ramsay.

“We played (teams from) Colombia,
New York, Colorado and Florida.”
In the southern States, ice hockey is
a concept that many are still trying to
grasp. However, inline hockey is renowned down there with rinks dedicated specifically to the sport.
“The (Germaini) arena where we were
at, there was no ice hockey involved …
all year round it was just inline played
there,” said Ramsay.
Off the roller rink, the players were
able to explore the ‘Sunshine State’ and
Ramsay, along with his family took full
advantage of being tourist in Miami.
“Probably (my favorite place) was Miami Beach (which was) very beautiful
and I really (enjoyed) the heat and the
palm trees,” said Ramsay.
“I went air boating (in the Everglades)
which was really fun and (the crocodiles) they were pretty scary.”
Ty’s mom, Cindy, could not be more
proud of what her son has been able to
accomplish thus far in his young inline
career. The other players’ parents welcomed the Ramsays with open arms at
the tournament.
“The parents all welcomed us (and) it
was like we were playing with them all
year,” said Cindy. “The coach was amazing as she is the only female coach in
NARCH. There were some challenges of

STRATHMORE WHEATLAND KINGS JUNIOR HOCKEY

having a female coach from the other
teams but she kept the boys in line,”
said Cindy.
With all the efforts of the players and
WIHA, there will hopefully be more of a
Strathmore presence in the near future
in the tournament.
“We are very fortunate to have Wheatland Inline Hockey Association in
Strathmore for our kids (who through)
hard work and dedication hopefully will
have a team in San Jose next year,” said
Cindy.
Ramsay managed to pick up a goal in
the tournament, and is hopeful to be on
the team next year when the event is
held in San Jose, Ca.

Athletes represent Strathmore in Alberta Summer Games Little rain
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

The Alberta Summer Games are upon
us – running July 24-27 in Airdrie - and
four players from the Strathmore Spartans Football Association will be representing the community.
The four boys, Misi Varga, Garrett Gatto, Kobe Halloway and Chevy Winnipeg
are part of Team Alberta Zone 2.
“We couldn’t be more proud,” says
Dahrlyne Knaus, proud mom of Garrett
Gatto.
This is a great accomplishment as well
as a huge honour, said Knaus. It not only
speaks volumes of the talent and commitment of these athletes, but of what a
great organization the Strathmore Spartans Football Association is.
“The coaching staff is extremely dedicated as is the entire Football Association,” said Knaus.
Because of their field play in the 2013
season, the boys were invited to try out
for Team Alberta. Only after eight intense
practices did they find out they had made
the team.
“When we received the emails that our
athletes made the team it was, like win-

ning the lottery,” said Knaus, who continued on to say they have been working
very hard at each and every practice and
are learning so much.
The boys will come into the 2014 season stronger and better players as a result
of this opportunity. All four of them realize what an incredible opportunity they

have earned; they are grateful for it and
are proud to be representing the Strathmore Spartans Football Association.
If you are taking in any of the Alberta
Summer Games in Airdrie on July 24-27

Their first game is Friday, July 25 at 10:30
a.m. against Zone 7 at the East Lake Field.

Elite Hockey shoots for improving players
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Doug
Raycroft’s
Elite
Hockey Development Camp
has the intentions of teaching hard, fast-paced and aggressive on and off-ice sessions.
As a coach in the camp,
Raycroft wants to see the utmost potential from a player
when they arrive. The most
rewarding aspect for him is
to watch a player over the
next hockey season and really see the dynamics of
what the player developed
from the camp.
“Right now we have a
prospect camp (started June
2 and ends Aug. 15) running
off-ice fitness … for any kids
that want to train for hockey,” said Raycroft.
The age groups who can
train in the hockey camp are
bantam double A’s, triple A’s
midget 15’s and triple A’s.

There are a variety of players who can attend these
summer camps to enhance
their on and off-ice conditioning.
“It (the camp) is meant
for players in this area that
wants to train to become
faster, stronger and work on
their skills,” said Raycroft.
The newest addition to the
Elite Hockey Development
is the off-ice conditioning
which was in high demand.
Raycroft and his staff were
approached from many parents to include it in the program.
“They (the parents) came
to us all the time and told
us that it was too expensive
to go to the city (for off-ice
conditioning) and time (is
limited) as you do not have
a choice and thought we
would offer that this year,”
said Raycroft.
The off-ice component,
according to Raycroft, has

been popular amongst the
first-year camp attendees.
Under Raycroft’s guidance,
it seems like every year
the amount of camps have
gained increased interest.
“About seven years now
we have ran camps (and)
have adapted over time, we
used to have a full week
hockey school but the one
year we had to cancel because the ice was gone (in
the rink) and ran fall camps
that were really well received,” said Raycroft.
On the ice, the players are
being pushed to improve,
and for the camp coaching
staff it takes a little more to
keep the players on track.
“The big thing we try to
emphasize is that it is all
about skill development …
and doing them right,” said
Raycroft. “We try to focus
not just on passing speed
and doing it properly (but
correcting) the kids when

we need to.”
But above all, the camp
gives the kids an opportunity to come out in the summer and learn about the
fundamentals of hockey in
hopes of going to a higher
level with their careers.
“I will see kids play at a
level they were not at before
and (the kids) will come up
to me in the winter and tell
(me) about how great (the
camp) was and thank you
and it is rewarding that way,”
said Raycroft.
Other camps that run
through the summer months
include: the Advantage program which runs from Aug.
5-29; a puck-handling clinic from Aug. 16-17; Tyke
Camp from Aug. 19-30; and
a shooting clinic from Aug.
30-31.

We are sad within our memory,
Lonely are our hearts today;
For the one we loved so dearly
Has forever been called away,
We think of her in silence.
No eye may see us weep,
But many silent tears are shed
While others are asleep.
