Repairs are needed on the Aquatic Centre roof after it was discovered that a section of the roof had been damaged and needs to be replaced. Minor repairs were being looked at on the roof where a couple of protrusions around the HVAC/Air conditioning have seen some leaking. “We had secured a contractor to come in and perform those repairs to buy some time in terms of the inevitable replacement of the roof at some point,” said Jesse Parker, director of engineering and operations for the town. Upon looking at the roof with the contractors to figure out an estimate, a major failure of the roof on the west side of the Aquatic Centre was found. A section on the lower area of the roof, above the washrooms in the Civic Centre and the mechanical storage room for the Aquatic Centre, has been damaged and fallen away from the building, leaving the insulation and inside of the building exposed to the elements. Parker said basically water got in and has saturated the drywall and insulation that was in that wall. There is some water that has gotten in beneath the roof, and there is also bowing, warping, of the roof, which indicates water damage in other areas as well. “We’re not overly happy (with) the fact that this has occurred but this part of our original section of roof,” said Parker. “With the water coming in I think it’s best that we open that up and determine what the damage is. This project budget as well as the estimate from the contractor represents worst-case scenario, so full replacement of that roof section. “If we open it up and find it’s not as bad as a full replacement there’s some things we can do to reduce this cost, but we won’t have that information until we actually open it up and do a proper assessment of the roof and what needs to be replaced.” Parker said he didn’t see significant damage below, so they are anticipating that the damage has been somewhat held to the one specific area. There was fun for the whole family at Langdon Days on June 19–21 at the Langdon Community Park. A tradition since 1912, this year’s event featured bouncy houses, wagon rides, a petting zoo, a dog show, sporting events and a vendor’s village. There was also a show and shine Sunday, and of course the annual weekend long baseball tournament. Food trucks come out from Calgary, and there was a beer garden for the hungry and thirsty.

All funds raised will go to the Langdon Community Association. Meetings have already begun for next year.

$60,000 scholarship has Strathmore teen breathing a sigh of relief
Shannon LeClair Times Reporter For some going to college or university can bring with it the fear of how bills will get paid, groceries bought and homework done. Though homework isn’t off the list, Strathmore teen Jonah Zankl can gladly check off the fears of affording university after he was awarded a $60,000 Schulich Leader Scholarship for the University of Calgary. “It’s such a pressure relieved, I think that’s the biggest thing is it opens so many opportunities to keep giving back in the community,” said Zankl. “The best quote I heard through the year was (from) a fifth year engineering student, he was speaking at a dinner I got invited to and he said, don’t think of it as free money, think of it as your paycheque for the year so you can volunteer instead of working.” There are 20 universities in Canada that participate in the Schulich scholarship program, and five in Israel. Every student selected must keep their grades up, and continue to show the ongoing leadership and community involvement that helped them be selected in the first place. “We had about 75 nominees this year and then from that we have a committee that looks at each and every submission,” said Susan Barker Vice-Provost of Students University of Calgary “We have criteria from the Schulich Foundation, we look at academic excellence, community involvement and entrepreneurship. Then from the nominees that we have we decide on two students that we make offers to as a result of the process.” Each high school in Canada is allowed to nominate one student for the scholarship said Barker. The first round of selection is by the high school; at that stage the student must say which university they wish to be considered for. The nominees have to be choosing within a STEM program in order to qualify for the scholarship. STEM programs are science,

Zankl relived the day he got the call that he had been selected as a recipient of the scholarship. “I got a call from the registrar at the University… and he was like ‘well what are your plans for school’, and I was like ‘well I am coming here now aren’t I?’” said Zankl. “This one was definitely crazy because I had gone home sick that afternoon and I was lying on the couch and just got that phone call and he was like, you need to sit down and at that moment I kind of knew that that was what it was going to be about. “I had seen on Facebook that they were announcing their selection that day, so it was unbelievable, I could hardly talk and didn’t even know what to say to him on the phone, it was just unbelievable.” Zankl plans to work on completing a combined degree in economics and applied math. At this point he is not sure where he plans to take his career, but he does have five years to figure it out. “I get $15,000 a year and basically whatever is beyond tuition is mine to use for books and school supplies and to put away a little bit more for my last year,” said Zankl. Montreal billionaire Seymour Schulich, who credits a scholarship with helping him complete his own MBA at McGill University, created the Schulich scholarship. He has been quoted as saying he is trying to create a scholarship in Canada similar to the Rhodes scholarship. In 2011 he announced a gift of $100 million to create the Schulich Leaders Scholarships. This year there were 40 students across the country selected to be 2013 recipients of the award.

Steroids often get bad press but there is a good side to them. Our bodies normally make steroids to build cholesterol which produce hormones like cortisol, made by our adrenal glands and is important in energy and immune functions. Other steroids regulate our fluid and electrolytes. Our sex hormones, like testosterone and estrogen are also steroids. Steroids are also used legitimately to treat diseases like asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis and gout. Short courses of steroids are used to treat allergic reactions that might cause obstruction of the airways and they can bring a quick and dramatic relief of symptoms. It’s the negative sides of steroids that we hear about in the media. Some body builders and athletes use them as performance enhancers and they can cause serious side effects like cataracts, osteoporosis, immune system suppression, confusion and mood changes perhaps with hallucinations. Kidney failure, blood clots, stroke and shrinking of the male testes also can occur. For standard medical problems, doctor oversight of the use and dosage of steroids is very important. However, using them for body enhancement is not a good idea and should definitely be avoided. It takes five years to become a pharmacist. In that time, we learn much about drugs and their uses. We’d be happy to share that knowledge with you.

Dream of policing comes true
Shannon LeClair Times Reporter You often hear that those that get into police work were born knowing they would join the force one day. In the case of one of Strathmore’s newest RCMP constable, Erin Peters, that old stereotype holds true. “It’s always been an option for me, I was that little kid that always wanted to be a police officer, and I don’t really have a rational reason for that, but I was that little kid that always said I want to be a police officer,” said Peters. After high school Peters went to university before moving to New Zealand for a year. Once she came back from her yearlong adventure she immediately applied to RCMP Academy. The toughest thing she found while at the depot was a build up of all the little stuff; she said you are pushed to every capacity while there. She found it was about learning to manage your time and finding balance between having so much to do and sort of maintaining your own personal hobbies as well. “It’s a little bit tough sometimes, but you really have to make a conscious effort. Strathmore is really good because it provides a lot of opportunities with gyms, parks and things to do, it gives you a lot more options of things to do,” said Peters. Fitness is emphasized, but Peters said the Academy offers a balance of training between both academics and fitness. “You have to be able to contribute equally in everything. It’s not just a matter of being able to run eight kilometres the fastest, you have to be able to also learn your laws. Learning other tools like communication and sort of analytical tools to help you as well. They really try and prepare you for every situation.” Being a member of the RCMP was once a career most commonly picked by men, but when Peters was in training she said it was a fairly even mix of men and women. “There’s definitely been a huge shift…not necessarily even (in) attracting women, but women being attracted to the jobs and realizing that there is a lot of potential and opportunity there for them,” said Peters. She graduated from the academy in February, and immediately went home to pack her bags and come to Strathmore. Since being here she has had a number of interesting experiences, but there are some that stand out more than others. “I think one of the more interesting experiences because you sort of see it on TV was participating in locating some individuals with the assistance of the helicopter, the HAWC from Calgary, that was definitely a really good opportunity that a lot of people may not get in other areas if it’s not available to them,” said Peters. “I’d say that’s got to be one of my highlights, sort of like being a kid watching a helicopter chase except you’re in it this time.” Having a chance to grow in her career, and be able to expand on her skills and move into different policing areas are just a few things that attracted Peters to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. “I think for me it’s the level of opportunity that’s available with the RCMP. You sort of have the excitement of general duty policing which you do now and then you can build up to more specialized sections in federal units as well, which isn’t an opportunity that everyone has in this line of wok,” said Peters. “And the red serge is just kind of nice looking.” She said it was funny about the serge because you see it and it’s really cool, but she said once you literally sweat and bleed for it, it’s a really nice feeling to have made it and finally have it on.

Kevin Sorenson, M.P., Crowfoot Parliamentary Report At the outset of this News Column, I want us all to think about the people of Lac-Mégantic, Quebec following the tragic train derailment and explosion. Our hearts and prayers go out to them following this shocking event. Like many people in our Province affected by flooding, they will be recovering and rebuilding for a long time. As your Member of Parliament for Crowfoot, I have accepted the appointment by The Right Honourable Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada to our Conservative Government’s Cabinet. I want everyone to know that I accepted this appointment on behalf of all of us in our Crowfoot Riding. We have worked hard for many years and we speak with a strong political voice. I renew my pledge to continue to work diligently on behalf of all my constituents, and now, I pledge to do the best I can in service to our nation as a Cabinet Minister. Our Conservative Government will continue to focus on creating jobs, growth and long-term prosperity in all regions of the country. We are delivering on our commitments. We have provided strong, stable government in a time of continuing economic uncertainty, kept taxes low, cut government spending, and put our finances on a sustainable path. We are committed to balancing the federal budget by 2015. I am humbled by the great amount of trust and confidence that our Prime Minister has expressed for my work with this appointment. I am looking forward to fulfilling my new duties and working in my new leadership role with my colleagues in our Conservative National Caucus. Since the ceremony at Rideau Hall on Monday, I have been working in my new office at the Department of Finance about four blocks south of Parliament Hill. In fact, I ‘hit the ground running’ by meeting the Finance Ministers from all provinces and territories in a teleconference my first day on the job. I will be the Minister of Finance’s voice in the House of Commons whenever the Minister of Fi-

nance himself is not in the House. I will be responding to the Opposition Parties during Question Period to finance-related questions. There are government bills to be ‘steered’ through the hearing process in the Chamber. Occasionally, I will be dispatched to appear in place of Canada’s Minister of Finance. My House of Commons office and my Crowfoot Constituency office will operate as usual. I will continue to work from these offices as my ‘base’. Many constituents will remember that in my earlier years as our elected federal representative, I was in the Opposition ‘front benches’ as Critic for portfolios including: Solicitor General; Justice; Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness. I am looking forward to this ‘higher profile’ position where I will be ‘stating our case’ and ‘setting the record straight’ when it comes to our Conservative Government’s actions to create jobs, grow our economy and prepare for Canada’s long term prosperity. Pat Fule Fule for Thought You may have heard of the rabbit problem that the Town of Canmore had to deal with a couple of years ago. Deb and I actually know how it all got started. There was a man we knew who had a lot of rabbits in the 70s, and a bunch of them got loose. It took a while (even though they were rabbits), but eventually Canmore had a real rabbit problem - they were everywhere. They lived in wooded areas, under buildings, and a bunch hung out under the Seniors’ Lodge. I guess if you were Lennie from Of Mice and Men, you’d be in Bunny Heaven! Remember, he wanted to “tend da rabbits?” My son had his own bunny situation, but it turned out to be a help, not a problem. When he was in his rookie basketball season at the U. of C. he and the other rookies had to face the dreaded “Initiation.” The older players basically got the rookies very drunk and shaved their heads to the skin. From what he remembers, the “party” changed locations a few times, and finally a totally bald Brennen was set free! Unfortunately, he had no idea where in Calgary he was, and he was still quite “loaded!” He actually phoned us on his cell in the wee hours, to try and get navigated close to his basement suite. This is where the rabbits came in. A totally bald Brennen found his way close enough to the university and home by noticing rabbits! There are a large number of rabbits near the U. of C. for some reason. Some may actually been set free by students who didn’t want to dissect them in Biology! There was a fellow PE classmate of mine, who actually made a protest sign about this that read: “Frogs Okay - Bunnies NO Way!” Anyway, a very inebriated Brennen found his way home, all because a lot of rabbits lived near his place! They couldn’t help with his shaved head, though. If you know elementary teachers, you know they’re always “on.” Even in Summer Break, they’re always thinking or planning about changing their classrooms, new methods or books to try, even things like class pets. There have been a few summers when the critters wound up at our house, until school resumed. That brings me to this summer. Debbie found a bargain on the “Strathmore Sells” site, and wound up with a small terrarium filled with sand, rocks, and not one, but two Hermit Crabs. First of all, I’m not big on anything that even remotely resembles a reptile, and these crabs are ugly! They actually leave one shell behind, and crawl into a bigger one. Now, you rarely see this happen, because only one crab actually does anything. He crawls around in his shell, with a good head of steam, so my kids named him Turbo. Well, Turbo actually got away while no one noticed, and a massive search was launched. We found him under a big couch, that I had to tip up, so Deb could get him. I thought about the crab, and asked Deb what crab was like barbecued? She did not find this amusing, and put Turbo back in the terrarium. The other one still was in his shell, although I’m still not even sure there are two, because I’ve never seen the one who’s always hiding. Oh yeah, he’s a really fun-filled pet … all you need to do, is watch the shell do absolutely nothing, and imagine what this crab might do! You’d think that would be it for my elementary teacher wife, but you’d be as wrong as me. More bargain Internet shopping, and we welcomed another addition to the family. Deb said he was a hedgehog, and my kids immediately named him “Sonic,” you know, from the Sega video game. I knew we were in for trouble when the lady who delivered him said, “he’s really stinky … we had to roll down the windows!” The cage was pretty dirty, and I was just getting used to this, when the other part of the cage came in! This hedgehog didn’t have just a cage, he had an addition where he could go and exercise! When I saw the hedgehog, I realized why he needed the extra exercise cage! I thought hedgehogs were small enough to fit in your hand … but this one was huge! He snorted a lot, made some gross snuffling noses and waddled into his little house. I told Debbie, “that’s not a hedgehog, that’s a badger!” This thing is a beast … the few times I’ve seen him, he’s a ball of quills, with a long snout, and he makes weird noises! Deb showed this fat rodent to me, while she held him with oven mitts, so she could pet him! “They” say hedgehogs can’t see well, but this one stared me down! I’m even scared to go near him on a “milk and cookie” run at night (you don’t think Deb got him from “Doc,” do you?)! So, now we’ve got new members of the family, we’re moving to another house, and I’m scared to walk near the badger’s cage! I know these guys are leaving when school starts, but it’s the first time I’ve ever wanted the Staples’ Back to School ads to start right now!

Oh, what a day! (And night!)
On July 30, 2013 – to the organizers delight, 90 people came to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Samuel Crowther School Reunion for the classes of 1962 and 1963, and their classmates from 1950 to 1963. Fifty classmates and two teachers registered for this special occasion held at the Travelodge in Strathmore. The room was decorated with pictures and memorabilia from the years of 1950 to 1963. Many classmates contributed to these displays which were great icebreakers as everyone began arriving for registration. Traveling the farthest to be present at the reunion were: Sarah (Pennant) Gindlestone from England; Lynn (Van Wezel) Schaefer from California, and Charlene (McCallum) Anderson and Judy (Hamilton) Grant from Ontario. All four classmates received a signed copy of Strathmore’s 100th Anniversary History Book for their extraordinary efforts in coming to the reunion. Other out province classmates included from British Columbia: Doug Damen, Ethel ( Jervis) Fraser, and Dan Keeler; and from Saskatchewan: Dick Peterson. Registered but unable to attend was Norman Fergusen from B.C. Group pictures (see above---Graduates are marked with an * following their names), along with many candid photos, were taken by Katherine Winkler who also kindly set up a web site for Classmates to gain access to the pictures. Our dining tables were beautifully decorated with fresh floral bouquets prepared by Ellen (Voutier) Helfrich and by amazing placemats featuring pictures of each group, taken throughout the years from Grade 1 to Graduation. These treasured keepsakes were prepared by Ian Sadler. During the delicious buffet dinner catered by the Strathmore Station, Bruce Klaiber efficiently MC’d the programme for the evening. Our Class Royalty, 1962 Queen of the Green and Gold --- Frances (Chamberlain) Hargrave and the Man of the Hour --- Tom Glendenning, introduced and welcomed Mr. Art Eeles. The Royals for 1963, Queen of the Green and Gold --- Evelyn (Ramsay) Winkler and the Man of the Hour --Wayne Bazant then welcomed Mrs. Rose Setliff. These two teachers along with their spouses: Mrs. Marg Eeles and Mr. Shorty Setliff, were the guests of the organizing committee for the day. It was wonderful to have them present and many classmates reminisced and visited with them throughout the day. MC Bruce then read the list of classmates who were not able to attend the reunion of 2013. The “We Missed You!” listing included 47 classmates and six teachers. Mrs. Betty Castella, although unable to attend, sent special greetings to all attending the Reunion. A moment of silence was observed as MC Bruce read the listing of classmates and teachers “Gone…but not forgotten!” Those classmates and teachers no longer with us included: Sharon (Cassidy) Brain, Fred Coles, Marg (Ewen) Verweire, Brian Giroux, Angela Henke, Henny (Hoogesteger) Schmidt, Gary McDougall, Larry McLauchlin, Doug Slater, Carol (Smith) Gilbertson, Linda (Tiede) Dahm, Miss Margaret Gordon, Mrs. Phyllis Grey, Mrs. Madeline Vermunt, Mrs. Marj (VanderVelde) Parker, Mr. Jack Crellin, Mr. Ian MacKenzie, Miss Genevieve Conaty, Mr. Frank Bazant, Mrs. Naomi Hamilton, Mr. Joe Noviski, Mrs. Ewen, and Miss Viola Meidinger. May they rest in peace. Table introductions introduced everyone present and then Mr. Eeles graciously gave the grace before meals. Answers to different trivia questions earned each table the right to go to the Buffet in order. While we enjoyed the meal, Don Risdon gave a reading entitled “Remembering Strathmore”. If you did recall the events shared by Don, and many classmates did, you could be called a “Strathmoreon”. As we concluded the meal with a decadent dessert buffet, MC Bruce presented a reading entitled: “We Survived!” and then read the toast to the those gathered, bringing a few tears to the eyes of some classmates. The table centrepieces were then given to the oldest classmate at odd numbered tables and to the youngest classmate at even numbered tables. A few fun contests were held with the winners receiving Tim Horton’s gift cards. The evening concluded with an open-mic session where many classmates shared stories from our school years. Sincere thanks is extended to the organizing committee, all of whom contributed great ideas and worked together to make this a memorable 50TH anniversary reunion that will be remembered for many years to come. Ingredients:
1 pkg 1 pkg 1/2 cup 1/2 cup 1/3 cup 2 tbsp (12 oz/340 g) (1 kg/2.2 lb) (125 mL) (125 mL) (75 mL) (30 mL) M&M Garlic Shrimp M&M Rice & Vegetable Medley each: chicken stock, white wine (or all stock) 18% cream grated Parmesan cheese chopped fresh dill or parsley salt and pepper, to taste grated Parmesan cheese
Serves 3 to 4

Directions:
1. Cook M&M Garlic Shrimp according to package directions. Keep warm. If desired, remove shells from cooked shrimp and chop into small pieces. (Or, serve cooked shrimp in shells on top of risotto.) In large Dutch oven, combine M&M Rice & Vegetable Medley, stock and wine. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently, for 3 to 5 minutes, until rice is warmed. Stir shrimp pieces, cream and dill into rice mixture; cook 1 minute. Season with salt and pepper. Serve immediately with additional cheese sprinkled on top.

Act of kindness is overblown
To the Editor I find it interesting that a simple act of kindness has been blown into such a ridiculous issue. First I would like to commend the Mayor and his council for donating money in a timely manner to help out High River; it was an act of kindness in a time of need on behalf of Strathmore. Giving like this is a municipality’s right, one I’m sure many other municipalities have done. There seems to be issue however in the manner in which this was done. Being a town council they do have policy in place to help them act upon ‘special circumstances.’ Using Town issued cell phones there was a 6/7 vote to go ahead and make the donation to High River (Councillor Best voted no). Councillor Sobol then asked if anyone wanted to call a special meeting, and no councillor requested one. Therefore the donation was made. I would like to remind those who are upset by this that we are only talking about a $1,000, which was given to a real life crisis in our own backyard. I don’t believe there is any need to demand a resignation for a gesture that was made with good intentions and followed through using council’s own policy. Councillor Best may not be happy with the outcome, but it did happen with a majority vote, which is what democracy is about. There is paperwork/minutes to prove that the funds were given following proper protocol. I think we need to trust those we have put in charge to do their jobs as best they can as long as they are adhering to their board policy and procedures. After all, that is why we elect a group of people to run our town. If policy and procedure were followed and only one member of council have a problem with what has transpired, then one tends to think a fuss like this is more of a personal issue and does not belong in the board room. Wheatland County council is doing the same type of thing, with public accusations and demands for apology from one councillor to another. Again … if due process was followed, then where’s the problem? I guess the good news is that this whole thing will be sorted out on Election Day in October. Please exercise your right to vote. My Brother, the Mayor of High River
To the Editor I felt it was time to write this letter. Most of us take every day as a normal challenge and take everything for granted. We pretty much follow the same routine day in - day out, without changing too much. I know that I do. June 20-23, 2013, everything changed in High River. Not only changed for 13,000 residents, but also their families and friends outside of town. This was not a normal flood. High River can handle those. They do just about every year. They have the expertise and equipment to deal with those flood issues. I’ve been with the mayor in previous years and seen what they had to deal with - and it was handled extremely well. The High River flood of 2013 has been declared the third worst disaster to hit North America. The flow rates of the Highwood River were indeed greater than Niagara Falls. About all you can do is stand back and watch. In two words - total devastation. With a state of emergency already declared, and the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) in full operation, town officials knew they were in trouble. Panic safety became top priority. As floodwaters continued to rise, within hours a mandatory full evacuation order was issued. By the 2 and 3 day, the entire town was under water; some streets nine feet deep. We’ve all seen pictures over and over. In the meantime, tensions, tempers and stress levels were also starting to rise. My brother called about then and said, “Rocky, you know I’m the mayor of High River but I don’t know if I got a town left.” I replied back to him “Emile, you still have your people. Look after your people!” In the three to four weeks that followed, I absolutely believe he did exactly that. The Mayor and Council working with the EOC, kept public safety and health in mind, kept enforcing the evacuation order in place, and don’t forget; there were no utilities working at all. With increased security, police and army in place, much to some citizen’s unrest, the Mayor kept his line - keeping his population informed of what was happening daily. He took some flack over this (and probably still is) but he stayed the course to make sure his population was safe. His decision to hand over the local state of emergency to the Province was a very wise one, even if it was only for two weeks. High River’s town staff and administration were completely mentally drained and fatigued. Many or all of them were dealing with their own personal flood problems. Even the Mayor didn’t escape unscathed. His house and commercial properties received extensive damage. As High River moves ahead, time will heal. Some of their citizens were more fortunate than others. Some lost a little and others lost a lot. It is very gratifying, to say the least, to see people helping people; communities helping communities. The week of July 8-15, there was in one day, excess of 1,000 volunteers in High River. This is tremendous! It might take 10 years to rebuild High River, but we all know - they will get there. As for my brother, I had lunch with him last week July 17. We’ve never been really emotional, except maybe when mom passed away a few years ago. But I do know, he has full family support behind him, from the Blokland side as well as from his wife, Gail’s side. We all love him very much and we all respect him for the leadership role that he has taken on in this disaster. Even in Strathmore yesterday, people were saying thank you to Emile. Premier Redford told me that Emile was one of the strongest people that she has met. Small town politics can be tough as I have found out, but this is a big time business that has to be dealt with. I have known this man for 60 years and I have never been more proud of him. In his words “inch by inch we will get there.” And you will. Our mother always told us “never give up.” Mayor Emile Blokland is probably the hardest working, and well-known mayor in Canada - for all the wrong reasons. Helping those in need
To the Editor Although I respect a person’s right to disagree with my actions (Letter to the Editor by Cheryl Marshman, Strathmore Times July 18, 2013), I do take exception to having someone misrepresent the facts, and thereby question my integrity. “Mr. Sobol used his position to decide without due process to grant money.” Not true. I did, however, use my position as a councillor and representative of my community (Strathmore) to organize some assistance to our neighbors in Southern Alberta in their time of need. Administration and our Mayor were first approached with my suggestions and were supportive. I then contacted each councillor to determine whether they would support the concept (five out of seven responded affirmatively). On two occasions, I suggested having a special council meeting to approve the funds (the last time on June 24, before any funds were released). No one from council requested a special council meeting to deal with this issue. Sometimes, decisions have to be made quickly – but they have never been made by one person. Whether in a formal or informal setting, this council has always worked on the principal that a quorum (majority) is required to make a decision, and this was no exception. The enormity of this tragedy created abnormal times, and the majority of our council realized this - demonstrating leadership in supporting two proposals to help our neighbors. Councillor Bob Sobol

“If The CrICk Don’T rIse” Ever heard the phrase, “I’ll be there Lord willing and if the crick don’t rise?” It’s an old expression that has been around for decades, but takes on new significance for us these days in Southern Alberta. I have lived here for 25 years and have never seen anything like this in our rivers. Others who have lived here much longer have said the same thing. It got me thinking, if you put enough water together in the same place, going the same direction, its power is amazing. The other day I explored around Wyndham Park and the Caresland Weir. The whole area is changed. The banks of the Bow River that used to be there are simply gone. Picnic tables are resting on fences hundreds of yards from the river. Of course, the damage to homes and businesses is where it is really serious. The losses are in the millions and millions of dollars. So, what are we to make of this? To go back to our old saying, the crick rose, but how does the Lord’s will fit in? I’ll leave sorting that out to someone else who has more smarts and more space than me. But we can remember some things about God and floods. When the Lord regretted what a mess his people made of his creation, he destroyed them with a devastating flood. That’s what Noah and the ark are all about. God expressed his wrath toward rebellion by flooding the earth and effectively starting over. It was like creation and then de-creation. Centuries later things were not much different. This time, however, instead of wiping out all of humanity, the Lord wiped out the representative human, his son, Jesus Christ. Psalm 42:7 can be taken as referring to Jesus when it says “your waves have gone over me.” God, in effect, drowned his own son in a flood of his wrath. The meant we were safe on dry ground, and this is a great grace. This was the beginning of his re-creation. Whatever we might make of the Flood of 2013 and its aftermath, one thing we can say is that God does still love us. He proved that in Jesus Christ. Darrell Young

The program that runs out of the library most of the year and was initially set up to encourage a life-long love of reading in young children. Shannon LeClair Times Reporter With the donation of a big-ticket item, Bobby Jo Wiebe just knew she had to reopen her online auction for another week. Since hearing the news she has kept her fans in suspense on Facebook, only announcing on July 23 what the secret item is. The auction runs on July 27 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and those interested can bid by going to Facebook and adding BJ Wiebe as a friend, or by going on Twitter and following @bajah21. “The item is a signed guitar from the guys of Nickelback, donated by them personally,” said Wiebe. “When we started the auction online I had a huge dream to have something signed by Nickelback. I have a friend who knew how to get it done but we really didn’t think it would happen because of the scheduling. Needless to say it came to fruition just recently and there was no way I was turning that away. The guys are from Alberta so it is an incredible fit to have this opportunity and I know we will make them proud.” Wiebe and her friends are hoping to see the guitar signed by the Hanna natives bring in thousands of dollars. They’re hoping to hit the $10,000 mark overall for the auction. Wiebe began the auction last month as a way to help raise funds for those affected by the flood in the Carseland-Wyndham area. She began with a goal of raising $300 and quickly realized that she wasn’t dreaming big enough. As of July 16 the auction had raised $5,550, and now with the autographed guitar the goal of $10,000 isn’t so far off. Families in Wyndham have finished cleanup and now have begun assessing what repairs need to be done, and what things are needed to help them get their lives back on track. Continued support is instrumental in making sure that happens, and financial help will go a long way in ensuring those who have lost homes, or parts of their homes, will be able to come out of this on their feet and able to move on. “After this item, it’s time to give some of this money out. We want our Wyndham families to keep progressing with rebuild and this money will hopefully help with whatever is not covered,” said Wiebe. “Having Nickelback’s support is attracting more names wanting to help, so if we need a round two of big ticket items then so be it, we will keep it going for them. The support for this auction and people of Carseland- Wyndham is out of this world amazing and feels so great to be a part of it all.” Another dream of Wiebe’s is finding a business that will match the funds raised through the auction. Racing club hopes to find a new home in Strathmore
Shannon LeClair Times Reporter The Calgary Kart Racing Club (CKRC) made a well-received presentation to Town council on July 17 about the possibility of moving their facility into the town. John Kwong, president of the CKRC club, and secretary Nathan Bartley showed a PowerPoint presentation on who the CKRC is, what they do and why they would be good to have in the community. CKRC has been around since about the 50s, which is approximately when kart racing was first developed. “We started out on parking lots, getting permission to set up and race in empty parking lots prior to when Sunday shopping started. Later we got permanent facilities when they were available, one of those was Kart Gardens by the Calgary Airport,” said Kwong. The present facility is located just southwest of Sheppard (SP) road and 68 St. next to the Calgary Waste and Recycling Landfill. Kwong said the lease is coming to an end and the city wants to reclaim it for waste disposal. The CKRC has been actively seeking a new location to bring their track. They had worked with the City of Calgary for 13 years and hope to build another good relationship wherever they end up. “Traffic and noise concerns are first and foremost sometimes when you let a motorsports facility into the community. Ninety per cent of our facility users are Calgary residents,” said Kwong. “The noise level we abide by right now is the City of Calgary noise bylaw which is 96 decibels, we’re well within those limits.” He said the club is able to stay within the noise restriction without having anything to try and cover the noise, such as berms. There would be about 60 vehicles coming through town to attend the events, which Kwong said would generally arrive at the track before 9 a.m. and leave around 4 or 5 p.m. in the afternoon. The CKRC is not a rental facility; it is by appointment only and is club run. “It’s a summer time only kind of venue. We run 12 one-day events, test and tune access on Tuesday and Thursday evenings typically. Our other user groups also hold one-day events coming in at about nine weekend events and 20 weekday what we call test and tune events,” said Kwong. In the past the CKRC has hosted charitable events, they have donated bottles collected on race day to the Boy Scouts, donated track time to the University of Calgary and more. The CKRC is looking for something like 15-20 acres on reasonably flat land. Some of the concerns they have are storm water management and decent access to main roads. The only utility they need is electricity and an area to can put up porta potties. The CKRC has 150 members in their club. There are 400 in the Alberta mini road-racing club. The Motard club also uses the facilities and has 25 members. The Allen Berg racing schools, and fast track motorcycle safety school also use the track and are partnerships Kwong thinks will come with them to their new location. Kwong said the CKRC only needs the land; they are prepared to incur all expenses to build their track. Kwong said the facility the town would get at no cost to the taxpayers, but with benefits to the community. Right now the big ticket is to get the land, commitment, get the asphalt down and go on from there. “We don’t want to be a burden on anybody, it’s just getting the land, that’s been our biggest obstacle so far,” said Kwong. Council was supportive of the presentation and are looking forward to the possibility of having the CKRC call Strathmore home. “I sure would like to be able to see you guys locate to Strathmore,” said Councillor John Rempel. “I’m excited, I say pursue that with administration and see what we can do,” said Mayor Steve Grajczyk. The CKRC will now have to go through administrative channels to begin the required process to bring their facility to town.

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Councillor John Rempel has been loading up his pickup and delivering truckloads of items to High River every chance he can. He had brought pressure washers, tarps and dollys to help haul out garbage from the homes. Now that much of the clean-up stage is coming to an end residents are now in need of different items. He said the residents of the waterdevastated community are in need of items to help them start putting their lives back together. The clothing donations that have poured in from outlying communities have been greatly appreciated, but as some High River residents are moving back into their homes they need things like furniture, dishes and other everyday household items. “There’s an awful lot of work that needs to be done there,” said Rempel. “Unless you have been there it’s indescribable.” Rempel said he is trying to make himself and his truck available to help bring things to the community. He also wants people to know that he does recognize there are other communities that are also in need, that he has not forgotten them and that he is trying to help out where he can. Rempel suggests that anyone wishing to donate items do so by bringing them to the Salvation Army in Okotoks or in Nanton.

Abraham Heights moves forward
Sharon McLeay Times Contributor The second and third readings of the Abraham Heights Area Service Plan (ASP) passed Wheatland Council with one vote opposed, on July 16. It is a two phase, three-acre development of eight lots and an additional commercial lot, southwest of Strathmore. Gareth Webster, engineering consultant retained by the county, recommended council not accept the ASP, which led to discussion of issues surrounding the plan. Webster indicated the development parameters were not consistent with the Municipal Development Plan (MDP), because it fragmented agricultural land and was not in a designated growth node. He also had other concerns. “I am concerned with the conclusion that the plan theoretically states, the wells will service the area and remaining developments in the area,” said Webster. He suggested a ground water study be done to verify the conclusion. The ASP showed traffic would be pushed over the capacity limit, moving it into a type two category, requiring paving and upkeep of the intersection on Township 240 and RR254. He recommended the developer be responsible for those costs. Councillors also had concerns about storm water management plans for the lots, as there was no centralized plan suggested. Patricia Maloney, planner for the developer, argued that those concerns could be dealt with during the re-designation stage of development, and expensive detailed studies were not required by the county at this stage in the past. “In earlier plans we required them for some and not for others,” said Reeve Glenn Koester. “This is part of the growing pains with our Area Service Plans. We are trying to come up with a more consistent method to make it easier on staff and developers.” Maloney argued they had complied with required studies and previous requests and conditions, which included moving an access road 15 m west of an Encana well easement and a promise to clean up fuel tanks and vehicles on the lots. She pointed out while the development wasn’t in a growth node; it was close to an urban centre, which was indicated as desirable in the MDP. She said the traffic increase would only be four vehicles at peak periods, and the intersection currently serviced county traffic going to the waste transfer site and Global Training. She felt it was unfair to place costs on one party. She felt levies or partnerships could be developed for the intersection later in the process. Landowner Danny Thiessen said they were trying to look to the future for the area and they wanted to be able to set aside property for their children. Thiessen said water issues were important, as it impacted their residence as well. Maloney said that each lot could incorporate a pond that would deal with storm water concerns. There currently were no objections from neighbours for the development.

The Strathmore Municipal Library has had a huge turnout for their summer reading program this year. The program is available to ages 3-17, and began on July 2. It will be running throughout the summer. The theme this year is “Go!” which focuses on the excitement of escaping into a story that involves travel. The participants take part in crafts, games and of course reading. The program helps students and young children develop a love for reading as well as keeping up their already learned skills throughout the summer.

The winner will receive a “Feature Article” in the Strathmore Times and will be featured on the Town of Strathmore’s website as the Best Hamburger in Strathmore and have 1 year bragging rights and a trophy to display in your establishment. Summer break for Remembering our Roots
John Godsman Times Contributor Effective today, I find it necessary to take a two-month break in the production of the ‘Remembering our Roots’ articles. When I started this project, it was intended to be a winter project only. We like to enjoy the summer, as do many of those I wish to interview. I have projects around my home that need doing, I have relatives and friends visiting, I also work twice a week in Calgary, and try to find time to play golf. I have really enjoyed interviewing and compiling articles on residents of Strathmore and Wheatland County, and fully intend to take up where I left off, in October. As many of my readers know, most of my articles have been written on residents who now live in Strathmore, but many of them started in rural areas like Hussar, Cluny, Gleichen, Nightingale, Rockyford, etcetera. There have to be others living in small communities up to 50 miles radius. Who are you? Where do you live? When did you or your forefathers come here? Why did they come here? Community builds mural and spirit
Morgan Lee Times Contributor The Up-cycling workshop put on by Hope Bridges Society has created a plastic card mural that has brought Strathmore business and individuals together. Hope Bridges is a society formed around the universal desire to belong. Its vision is to strengthen community bonds, using arts to promote connection as well as wellness through participation and inclusion. The society puts on several workshops that go on throughout the year, one of which is called Go Green, Up-cycling. “Up-cycling is taking something recyclable and turning it into something beautiful and useful,” said Wanda Reinholdt, Hope Bridges coordinator. In this workshop, participants have been working on individual projects as well as a community project. The current community project Up-cycles used plastic gift cards from local businesses and has turned them into a mural. The businesses have no use for these cards after they have been turned in, so they are usually thrown away. “(The mural is) like a tile mosaic design,” said Johanna Jackins, Up-cycling Facilitator, “We’re taking the plastic cards and cutting them into two inch squares and gluing them onto the design, so when you look at the whole thing it will be like a mosaic.” The canvas for this mosaic is on old screen door, painted and fitted with plywood, so very few new materials have been used to create this work. As well, the brightness of the gift cards makes for an exciting piece of art. “Some of (the cards) have beautiful graphic designs on them so it makes for a really beautiful colourful design,” said Jackins. The mural depicts a blue sky with white clouds and different coloured kites and is made up of almost 700 squares. The class has been working on this community project since the workshop started in October, and it has taken approximately 70 hours to construct. shop, eight local businesses as well as many other people in the community. “From a coordinators perspective… and from the perspective of the board, what the mural has done is bring community together with individuals,” says Reinholdt, “it’s drawn all sorts of people together that wouldn’t necessarily get together naturally which is our mandate.” On completion, the mural is set to travel from business to business to be displayed in their store for a week to 10 days. “(The businesses are) all really excited about seeing what the end result was with these cards,” said Jackins, “they’re all very willing to have the mural displayed in their store.” The mural will also be visiting places in the community like the Strathmore Public Library, as well as two events: the Strathmore Regional Art Collective Arts and Sounds Festival in September and the Hope Bridges Gala in October. “Our Hope Bridges mandate is to connect people, it’s our top priority and so this mural has done it, because not only is it bringing together the people that come to the Up-cycling workshop on a weekly basis but it’s also bringing together the businesses to help the individuals build the mural,” said Reinholdt. “It’s just developing community spirit, there’s a lot of pride that’s being generated because so many people have contributed to this piece.”

World-class musicians to perform at Rosebud Chamber Music Festival
Laureen F. Guenther Times Contributor Many of us think of chamber music as formal and impersonal, performed by musicians so distant, we’d never recognize them if we met them on the street. But chamber music was originally played in the “chambers” of homes, where musicians and intimate audiences gathered close. In its inaugural season, the Rosebud Chamber Music Festival will bring some of the traditional intimacy of chamber music to southern Alberta, July 29 to August 4. Keith Hamm, 25, the Festival’s artistic director, grew up in Rosebud and lives in Toronto, where he’s principal violist of the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra. The idea of gathering musicians for a chamber music event in his hometown “was always in my head,” he says. But LaVerne Erickson, founder of Rosebud Centre of the Arts, and informal Festival manager, points out that not just any musicians would do. “Just to stand on the stage and play a violin and then walk behind the curtain isn’t going to do it. They have to be a storyteller and a performer,” he says. “And that’s what we’ve managed to find here.” “All the artists that are coming, they’re so warm and they appreciate community,” Hamm says. “They’re eager to meet the locals and get to know them, and build relationships with the community.” Violinists Sheila Jaffe and Aaron Schwebel are “brilliant young musicians,” Hamm says. Jaffe is currently performing and studying in Germany. Schwebel plays with the Montreal Symphony, the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, and the Toronto Symphony. “And he just got a job with the National Ballet,” Hamm says. “He’s just sort of exploded onto the Canadian classical music scene.” Pianist Peter Longworth “was one of my mentors at the Glenn Gould School (of Music), where he’s a professor,” Hamm explains. “He’s a huge name in collaborative piano.” Arnold Choi, cellist, is “a Calgary native, so it was nice to have another Alberta boy in the mix,” Hamm says. “He’ll be playing on a Stradivarius cello and it’s an $11 million instrument.” A later addition is pianist Samuel Deason, a finalist in the Busoni International Piano Competition. Hamm says Deason wrote, saying, “Could I come to Rosebud and do a recital for you guys on a pay-what-you-can basis? … This is a top-level (musician), one of Canada’s finest young pianists, and he wants to come to Rosebud to play. He’s asking me, can I come?” he laughs. “I was like, yeah. Thank you!” They’re some of Canada’s finest musicians, “And it’s just for us,” Hamm says. “The performance venues don’t actually seat that many people. So if you’re (at this festival), you’re really up close and personal with some really great musicians.” It’s chamber music at its best. Strathmore churches offer camp fun
Laureen F. Guenther Times Contributor Strathmore churches are offering summer programs that provide fun times with friends, while teaching values and practical skills. The Strathmore Full Gospel Church held a Vacation Bible School July 22 to 26. Coming up in August two other community churches will be hosting day camps. Strathmore Alliance Church Strathmore Alliance will host a children’s day camp August 19 - 22, 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., on the theme The Word of God. Children entering Kindergarten and Grade One participate in crafts, stories, games, songs and snacks. Grades Two to Six students also do singing and storytelling, then spend 90 minutes of each morning on the activity of their choice: Sewing, Cooking, Art, Science, Sports or Wood-working. “I love teaching kids some practical living skills,” says Donna Fitzgerald, Children’s Ministry Director. Children also learn that “things don’t come from nothing.” In cooking, for instance, children learn how to crack an egg, and to prepare foods they can make at home. Spending 90 minutes daily, for four days, in one activity area also gives children and leaders time to build warm relationships. The program costs $20 per child. Lord of All Lutheran Church Lord of All Lutheran Church hosts a Vacation Bible Camp on the theme God Loves Us, August 19 to 22, 6:30 to 8:15 pm. After crafts, games and storytelling for the children, and a discussion group for the adults, all the “campers” – preschool to senior – gather around a campfire, where they sing silly songs, old and new, and visit over a snack. It’s “a little bit of the old camp tradition,” Nelson says. “The campfire is a big draw because (adults) remember campfires from when they were at camp,” and “it gets the kids ready for going to (overnight) camp.” The program is free and welcomes children, families and individuals of all ages. Venom lose in second tight playoff game
Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter After three very physical periods against Innisfail on July 17, the Strathmore Venom rallied in a 10-minute overtime period to get their first playoff win, by a score of 13-11. Two days later, in Red Deer, the boys were down 8-2 after the first period. “Red Deer is a very good team, they played very well,” said Venom Coach Hal Morris. “We broke down defensively a little bit, but we really picked it up after the first period, and played our normal game.” The Venom fought back in the second, bringing the score to 8-6, and eventually went up 9-8 in the third. Red Deer then snuck two unanswered goals – Strathmore lost 10-9. In comparison to Innisfail, “Red Deer is more balanced, stronger defensively, and have better goaltending,” Morris said. The Strathmore Coach also credited his own team’s goaltending as part of their success in the playoffs. “Once we got the first periods behind us, Lucas Bobbitt, he played fantastic for the last two games,” he said. The Venom still finished at .500 per cent during the season, which is what Morris expected: “I’m just very, very proud of the players, I couldn’t have asked anymore from them. They worked their butts off, in both playoff games.”

Strathmore had a few key players that could not compete due to injury; captain Josh Stolz was not 100 per cent during the playoffs, but still played through the pain. In the first playoff game, Innisfail had three extremely skilled players that the Venom had rarely seen before, as they had been injured during season play as well. Even if players hadn’t been injured prior to that game, they certainly could have been during – there was a very feisty and competitive attitude in the rink. “With Innisfail, we’ve always had quite a rivalry with them, hence all the penalties,” said Coach Morris. “It was a pretty rough game, but I think our boys stayed a little bit more disciplined, and ended up taking fewer penalties than Innisfail.” Morris also felt that playing the first game at home brought an advantage, especially with not having to travel. “We had a great crowd for us. We always like playing in our building because our playing surface is actually bigger than most because of the Olympic-size playing surface,” he said. “We know how to use that to our advantage and we always like playing in front of our own crowd.” The future looks bright for the Junior B team, with only two players leaving the team this year, and possibly adding more from Strathmore’s minor lacrosse divisions. Training will begin next March.

The Strathmore Venom were victorious against the Innisfail Phantoms by a score of 13-11 on July 17. The two teams have a harsh rivalry; this game was one of the most physical of the season. Rockyford Rodeo running into 56th year
Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter The 56th Rockyford Rodeo is back in town, with the same classics and some improvements as well. “We have done a lot of improvements on the rodeo grounds,” said Arena Director, Warren Kalbhen. “We built a new rodeo office, a new eye-in-the-sky, changed a bunch of corrals around, and we built a new beer booth.” Also new this year: flat track races will take place between the chucks and chariots. The full rodeo will take place on the July 27 and 28 beginning 12:30 p.m., but the festivities begin on Friday July 26. Some events include steer riding, steer wrestling, roping, bareback, barrels, bull riding, saddle bronc, and even a miniature wild horse race; kids 12 and under are able to compete. “The horse comes out of the chute— and it’s a wild horse,” said Kalbhen. “Somebody has to jump on and ride them.” With up to 500 to 600 contestants, plenty of assistance is needed. At least 230 volunteers are needed, just in the kitchen! “There’s so many other things; there’s the cabaret, the rodeo committee, the parade,” said Kalbhen. Last year, the Rockyford committee was named Rodeo Committee of the Year. “It’s really good to see how everybody comes together—a huge amount of volunteers to make it work,” said Kalbhen. “It’s impressive how it can keep growing and growing.” Rodeo entertainment includes the likes of Nicki Cammaert and also the TC & Company Band. Friday night is the family dance, followed by the cabaret on Saturday. There will be a free pancake breakfast on Saturday morning from 7-10 followed by the parade. Later on that day, a BBQ beef supper will be held at 5 p.m. (also on Sunday). Rodeo costs are $10 for adults, $6 for ages 6-17 on Friday; $15 for adults, $7 for ages 6-17 on Saturday and Sunday. Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter This is Coach Pat Fule’s 20th year of running the JETS basketball program—a week-long camp of 15 hours dedicated to learning the basic skills of the sport. “We really want them to be strong in their fundamentals, so we really work hard at teaching the proper way to dribble a basketball, the different types of dribbles, jump stops, pivoting,” Fule said. “We really focus on the proper way to shoot a basketball, because there’s definite right ways and wrong ways to shoot. Then we try to teach them man to man defense so when they get in the game, they can feel confident playing against someone.” The two age groups (Grades 1 to 4, and 5 to 9) are full this season with 24 and 28 members respectively. The younger group plays from 9 a.m. to 12 Noon, and the older kids follow in the afternoon from 1p.m. to 4p.m. “We have three hours, and we spend two or so working on drills, skills, and fundamentals,” Fule said. The key to players’ success, he says, is playing 3 on 3 for the last hour each day. “We feel if you play 3 on 3, the players touch the ball more. You can be in a game of 5 on 5 and play for a few minutes, and never even get the ball, so that doesn’t help you progress as a player,” he said. “Whereas when you play 3 on 3, you’re going to touch the ball more, and the more touches you get, we hope and feel and think that they’ll improve that much faster.” Making the kids feel like they’re part of a closer-knit team is integral to building their confidence as well. Fule says that he sees definite improvement in the players’ games from Monday to Friday. It’s purely recreational, and though JETS used to record statistics, they’d much rather provide a fun environment for the athletes. Most of the kids stay within the program for four to six years, and once they get to junior high, if they’ve shown a lot of promise and skill, they can try out for school teams or for the Wheatland Wildfire (run by Kyle Larson, vice principal of Strathmore High, where the camp takes place). Some even come back to coach with Fule. “A lot of the kids have gone on to play club basketball,” he said. “Some have gone on to college basketball, or even university basketball.”

Sox get tangled
Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter The Calgary Red Sox finished first in their league play within the Calgary Women’s Softball League - they only lost one game all season. However, at Provincials from July 19 to 21, the Red Sox finished 2-2 in the round robin, and lost to the Strathmore Magic in the playoff round. It was the first time they’ve lost to the Magic all year. “We had the talent, and we had the coaching. I mean, we’ve been so strong all season,” said Red Sox outfielder Katie Coulter, originally from Strathmore. She believes it became more of a head game than a game on the field. “We were strong, we had such a successful year. We thought we were fully prepared. But honestly, we just beat ourselves,” she said. “The teams that beat us this weekend are teams that we have beat all year. There’s no excuses there, we know we’re a stronger team than what we showed up as.” By finishing fourth, Coulter’s team will not advance to Western Finals in Saskatoon. Alberta usually sends their top two teams, but is sending the top three teams this year, as BC did not submit any. The Red Sox missed out just by one spot. “We had goals set out for our whole season,” said Coulter. “One of them was to finish first in our league, which we accomplished. We also had a goal to be in the money, in all tournaments, and we accomplished that goal. Obviously Provincials was another goal, but we failed that one. So now, our last one is to win the league playoffs, so we’re not going to let up. We’re just going to go hard for that, that’s all we can do.” Coulter’s team will have played the semi-finals in their league play by July 23, but results were not available at the time of print. Coulter said this past weekend’s slump will just make the team even more motivated to be successful in the city playoffs. Even with the unexpected finish, Coulter was glad to come home to the field she was raised on. “It’s definitely comfortable. I’ve played so many tournaments here over the years, like we’ve hosted Provincials, when I played with Strathmore we hosted many times, we hosted Westerns here. I grew up on these diamonds,” she said. “I played as hard as I could and laid it all out there, and you just hope for the best.”

Car show tradition going strong
High Eagle R.V. resort hosted their third annual Rosebud car show on Sunday, July 21 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Ed, Jeanne and Lars Sonmor have hosted the car show at their family owned and operated R.V. Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Strathmore’s Senior B Magic finished a respectable third overall in Provincials this past weekend, July 19 to 21, going 3-1 in round robin; in the playoff round, the Magic beat out the Calgary Red Sox 8-3, but lost to the Edmonton Warriors 12-2. The Warriors eventually won first place in the province. “Everybody gave us a run. Everybody that was here in that pool, in the nine teams that were here, were all top Senior B teams. You had to earn your right,” said Magic Coach Jim Songhurst. But the Edmonton Warriors? “They brought everything – all of their cannons with them,” he said. Though Strathmore may have had home diamond advantage, the other teams have all played here so often that Songhurst didn’t believe that gave the Magic an edge, especially in the playoffs against Calgary and Edmonton. “When we stepped on the diamond, we knew who we were going up against, and we knew it was a hard hitting team,” he said. “They just got on our pitchers right off the bat, and we made a change real quick, and then got onto our reliever who pitched good innings before hand, and they just did to her what they did to the starter. They know how to hit the ball and play the game. We’ve seen them before, and our record is close, but they’re now winning the series.”

Strathmore had a few players lost to injuries, and some who were not available at the time. “If we had the additional players, we may not have been as tired as we were, but our girls put out so hard through the round robin, but y’know, that’s the name of the game. Every team has the same issues,” said Songhurst. Alberta sends three teams to Western Canada Finals in Saskatoon from Aug. 15 to 18, and Strathmore, finishing third, earned that last spot. “Our girls played unbelievable. They did excellent and I’m very proud of them,” Coach Songhurst said. “They all did their job out there. You can’t pick out just one. They wanted to impress everybody because they had been told that they’re not good enough to be going to the Western Finals, and they had some points to prove.” Songhurst believes those comments that were made just put a firecracker within his players, and made them play that much harder. “You could tell through the games that they were going to come at you full guns flooring, no matter who they played. Everybody likes to come at us, because two years ago we were the Western Canadian Junior Champions. Good quality players always play at their fullest and it brings the best out in other teams,” he said. The ladies have the rest of their city league play before leaving for Saskatchewan.

Beach volleyball: yea or nay?
Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter The Town of Strathmore and the Kinsmen Club are considering expanding into an area just east of Kinsmen Park (roughly 9.6 acres) for additional recreation opportunity projects. The Town has asked residents to participate in a survey for evaluating whether or not beach volleyball courts would be a smart investment. “Because of the fact (beach volleyball courts) are growing with such popularity in the major centres, they think that they’ll work,” Recreational Events and Communication Coordinator Tracy Simpson said. “Before we spend the money on bringing them in – it’s quite expensive, it’s going to be an investment – if it’s something the community really wants then they’ll do it, but they don’t want to waste their money on something that’s just going to sit empty.” Two to four courts are being proposed; other potential ideas for the future include outdoor exercise equipment along the canal, or a bocce court. “We’re just trying to get an idea of what the community wants and what is going to be best utilized by the most people,” Simpson said. Simpson noted, that while we have plenty of indoor recreation, the only outdoor recreation space Strathmore has are the pathways; this expansion would be a great opportunity to grow on. It is expected they’d be available for play from May to October once up and running. If this were to pass, Simpson said the more sporting events we can host (or festivals or tournaments) the better. “There’s definitely a tourism factor, but there’s also a community factor. The more things we can offer people to do in their free time, makes it more of an attractive place to live. As a community that’s looking to attract young families, more recreational facilities are definitely a good investment,” she said. “We want a healthy town. The more recreational opportunities that are cheap, or free, the better.” The financial backer of the project, the Kinsmen Club, own the park, and are very interested in putting money into the project. Depending on how many took place in the survey, it will be taken into the consideration by those who have the final say – the Town and the Kinsmen Club. The survey closes July 26.

With great sadness we announce the passing of our Great Grampa Gordy. Gordon was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Dorothy and Harold Chapman. As a young man he served as a Merchant Marine from 1943 – 1945. His travels around the world gave us some pretty colourful stories. As his life settled, he was a “bartender” leading to flat roofing upon his retirement. Moving back to Cranbrook, that quiet time turned into full-time volunteering at the local Fraternal Order of Eagles, along with the Legion; too many good friends there to mention. Gordon finished living out his life in Strathmore. He was predeceased by his wife Eileen and his best friend Tanner, the dog. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Patti and Jake Wagler, and their daughters Shawna, and son Lincoln, and Debbie all of Strathmore; daughters Pam and Penny and their children Derek, Leila, Cliff, Karin, four great-grandchildren, and one great-greatgrandchild all near the Vancouver area. A celebration of Gordon’s life will be held on Friday, July 26, 2013 at the Strathmore Royal Canadian Legion Hall at 1:00 p.m. with a luncheon to follow.
