The erstwhile Co-op building, now left vacant in
Strathmore’s downtown core, received new ownership last week, after town council dished out over a
million dollars upon being presented with an offer
they were unable to disregard.
After much negotiation with the Calgary Co-op,
council made an offer of $1.5 million on the 1.742
acres of land - which includes the land and property
but not the liquor store - with possible intentions of
moving the municipal offices to the downtown core
in the future.
When the offer was accepted, with two installments
paid over two years and no interest accumulating,
council voted in favour the recommendation to approve the purchase.
“The financial decision is, I think, a very solid one,
the offer is very good, and it’s one of those deals …
we couldn’t turn down,” said Councillor Pat Fule. “I
think it’s going to be a boon for the downtown and
it’s going to help in a lot of ways. We’re going to see
a huge benefit from this many years down the road.”
The former Co-op building, which was at the centre
of many controversial discussions since the announcement of the conglomerate’s move to a new location
near the highway, was left unoccupied on July 14.
Raising concerns among the senior and low-income
residents living near Strathmore’s downtown, who relied on the grocery store as a lifeline, council had approached other grocery stores to occupy the space.
Without much interest received to take over the space
and aid in the revitalization of the town, council secured the area for the possibility of moving their offices from their current location in the future and support the vitality of the core.
“We’re faced with this situation where the Co-op has
left and we’ve tried various avenues to get another
grocery retail outlet there and to no avail … at least
we have the opportunity not to lose this property and
should we decide that we need to expand our municipal building, then we can do something to really make
an effort to add to the downtown core,” said Fule. “To
have a municipal building possibly, that will be there
so that all town businesses and residents who come
to do town business actually come right downtown,
[then] our municipal building, in a sense, would show
that we believe in our downtown core and we support it.”
Co-op’s corporate decision to relocate to the Ranch
to allow for expansion followed the moves of the
Royal Bank of Canada, the ATB Financial, and Sobeys
(IGA) years earlier.

New initiative to boost hospice project
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

A new approach is aiming to inspire
other businesses and individuals in the
community to think outside of the box
and find a way to contribute to the Cheadle Lions’ hospice project that seeks to
fill a need in keeping the terminally ill
close to home.
Local home-builder Leanne Hilton,
owner of Rich-Lee Custom Homes, will
be donating the proceeds from the sale
of one of her homes in the Hillview community to inflate the fundraising efforts
for a Wheatland County hospice project.
The million-dollar initiative, which is
still in its infancy, already raised a whopping $75,000, with $60,000 accumulated
through the Cheadle Lions’ Feed a Steer
program, over $3,000 through the Cheadle 4-H club lamb sale, and some funds
received from two families who recently
lost a loved one.
Hilton, who had been aware of the importance of such a facility for years, is
optimistic she’ll be able to contribute at
least $25,000 from the sale of the three
bedroom, three bathroom, 1,564 sq. ft.
bungalow-style home.
“I don’t know any one person that has
not been affected by terminal disease,
and if you’ve had that experience where
you’ve been affected by that, you know
how traumatic it is for the whole family,”
said Hilton.
“This is my little piece of the pie to
help and contribute to it. There’s going
to be a whole bunch of other little cuts
of this pie coming together to make it a
whole. It may take time and that’s OK,
but at least we’re on that road, we’re on
that path, and it’s a good path to be on.”
Through more awareness, Hilton is
hoping that more community members
will get involved and create a snowball
effect to move the project further along.
Having had experience with the Chea-

dle Lions Club in the past, when she cofounded Project H.O.P.E – a community-based program providing therapy to
children diagnosed with severe physical,
social, emotional and behavioural challenges - Hilton approached members of
the club and local realtor Katelyn Haffner with Century 21 Real Estate to get
her idea off the ground.
While there is no concrete dollar
amount for the overall cost of the project, the Cheadle Lions Club predicted it
will cost a few million dollars. With fundraising efforts already well underway,
a boost from the sale’s proceeds would
propel their efforts further along.
“Here we have done basically our first
full year of funding and this would be a
30 per cent bump up on what we’ve accomplished so far,” said Sonny Warrack,
member of the Cheadle Lions Club. “Financially this is huge, but even bigger
would be to have the community leaders… that’s the real plug. I think it’s going to help us move even faster to make
it go ahead even better.”
After a successful trial with their Feed
a Steer project, the club is already gearing up for the initiative to launch again
in October - this time with double the
amount of steers, at 40.
The Strathmore home, with its big
windows, breathtaking view, and all the
bells and whistles, is listed for $689,900
with full commission being offered to
the real estate agents bringing a buyer.
The Cheadle Lions Club will be present at their booth during the Strathmore
Stampede this weekend, to provide more
information as well as donation forms.
“It’s important for our residents to
have this as an asset in the community
when that unfortunate time comes that
they require that,” Warrack said. “We feel
it’s horrible that families in our area,
Strathmore, and the county area do not
have this available for them, when that
need is there to keep them closer to their

Q: What happens if a death occurs
away from home?
A: Your local funeral home can assist you

regardless of where the death takes place,
and should be contacted as soon as possible.
They may require the assistance of a funeral
home nearer to the place of death.
Your funeral home will coordinate with
the distant funeral home and arrange for
embalming or cremation, and the transportation
of the deceased back home. It will still be
necessary for the next of kin to come into the
local funeral home to sign paperwork and
provide required information. As the distant
funeral home will have provided part of the
funeral services, your funeral home may deduct
some expenses as duplicate services.
In most cases, your funeral home will take
care of the costs for the distant funeral home,
and simply add those charges to the
final invoice.

Council votes against appointing Mayor to CAO
Succession Planning Committee
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Town council made a bold statement
during the regular council meeting on
July 22, when they unanimously voted
against appointing Mayor Michael Ell
to the newly proposed CAO Succession
Planning Committee.
The ad hoc committee, an initiative to
deal with the current chie=f administrative officer’s retirement announcement,
will serve to gather relevant information for the hire of a new CAO.
While Mayor Ell, who was absent at
last week’s meeting, requested consideration to be appointed as one of two
members from the council to form the
committee, all five councillors voted in
opposition of the request.
“I’m disappointed, but council gets
to make that decision as a group, and
that was the decision of council,” said
Mayor Ell. “I think it’s very important

that we do our ultimate best to attract
the right person to that position in the
future, and the decision has been made
and the people that have been chosen
will have my support where I can support them.”
Shortly after the vote, Councillor Bob
Sobol and Councillor Denise Peterson
were elected to fill the positions, with
Councillor Steve Grajczyk serving as an
alternate.
According to the mandate, the council members will determine where to
advertise, gather the necessary information for the hire of the new employee, put forth plausible candidates for
council approval, and draft and present
a CAO job description for council approval.
“The reason that council is getting involved in this - because council do not
get involved in operations at all - is because the CAO is the only employee of
council,” said Deputy CAO Linda Nel-

son. “That is their role and responsibility to do that. They would recruit and
make a decision.”
The successful candidate will work
on behalf of council to offer council advice and make recommendations. The
committee will remain active until the
position is filled.
Chief Administrative Officer Dwight
Stanford, who served in his position for
the past 23 years, will be retiring early
next year.

Town steps up
for downtown revitalization
Continued from Page 1

Through the efforts of local businesses, various organizations, and the
Downtown Design Review Committee,
small businesses have migrated back
to the downtown area – in part due to
cheaper rent.
While the issue of the Co-op building remained at the forefront, council’s
recent decision aims to aid in its revival.
“I’ve spoken to councillors and members of the council from other municipalities whose town offices are in the
downtown area, and I tell ya, it benefits
the downtown incredibly,” said Councillor Bob Sobol. “It’s very well reported
and makes a big difference, and we do
want to move our downtown forward
and support businesses. The specifics,
in regards to our town office going
down there, are still under review and
in discussions. At the end of the day, I
still think that this is an investment in
our downtown, and I think it’s overall
a wise one.”
Councillor Denise Peterson also
voiced her approval when she said it
will be a saving grace for the community, and Councillor Brad Walls was
pleased a decision is being made to
move forward on the project.
The first of two equal payments is
due Oct. 1, while the second and final
payment will be made on Oct. 1, 2016.

Funds for the purchase will come from
the Financial Stabilization Reserve.
Councillor Steve Grajczyk was also
concerned about a structure attached
to the property that he felt could result in additional costs. Administration
assured council the structure would be
assessed for value and dealt with. However, Grajczyk wanted to assure the
public that the decision to purchase the
property and land will not result in immediate changes.
“We are not building a town house
tomorrow morning or next year,” he
said. “This is just the first small step towards going in that direction.”

One of the ways that antibiotics like penicillin
kill bacteria is by attacking the cell wall of the
infecting organism eliminating its ability to divide
and multiply. The cell walls are like an outer skin
that holds the bacteria together. Because our human
cells don’t have cell walls, so they aren’t affected by
the antibiotic.
If you have diabetes, pay particular attention
to your teeth and gums. If your diabetes is not
controlled well, your saliva may contain more sugar
which is food for bacteria that form that sticky film
called plaque. Keep your blood sugar in check.
Floss your teeth at least once daily and brush often
with a soft toothbrush.
Levothyroxine is one of the top-ten prescribed
drugs in Canada. It replaces what your own thyroid
is not producing. The best time to take it is one
hour before breakfast but this is sometimes difficult
to do all the time. They key is to be consistent and
take it the same time whatever that may be. Since
thyroid levels are based on blood tests, the dose can
be changed according to suit how you take it.
Poison ivy: Even though the rash is not contagious,
it can look terrible and be quite uncomfortable.
Having had poison ivy before does not confer

REMEMBERING OUR ROOTS ~ Don & Florence VanderVelde
JOHN GODSMAN
Times Contributor
Vander Veldes have been traced back
to 1811, in Friesland, Northern Holland.
Don’s great-great-grandfather Martin
Vander Velde came to North America in
the early 1800’s, serving with the Wisconsin Volunteers in the American Civil
War, and later settling in Sheldon, Iowa.
His great-grandfather, Andrew, was
a farmer in Iowa,
where Don’s grandfather Martin was
born. In the early
1900’s, grandfather
Martin and three
brothers came to
the Carseland/Dalemead area where
they purchased land,
as well as northwest
of Strathmore (Ardenode). The Carseland/Dalemead land
is presently farmed
by
Don/Florence
Vander Velde, along
with Neil/Bev Miller of Dalemead, Harley/Glenda Stewart of Dalemead, and
Brian/Judy Bazant. One of the three
original brothers sold his farm and returned to Iowa, and another brother
died.
Don’s father, Gerald, was born in
1916, in the farmhouse grandad Martin
had just completed building. This is the
house Don and Florence live in. Gerald
was well known throughout the area,
as an excellent saxophone player with
a local band.
On Don’s mother’s side, his grandfather Dan Fraser, born in Inverness,
Scotland, came to Alberta in the early
1900’s, where he worked as a “horse
rough string rider” whose job was to
break two- and three-year-old colts for
riding. Don’s grandmother Winnifred
Morrison born in Edinburgh, Scotland
came to Canada in 1912, sailing on
the ship that followed the Titanic. On
reaching the point where the Titanic
had sank, they had to sail through a
large field of debris! Dan and Winnifred met in Calgary, where she was a
secretary to the late R.B. Bennet, who
would become the 15th Prime Minister
of Canada. They were married in 1914,
and farmed a half section of land 12
miles southwest of Strathmore.
Don’s mother Janet Fraser was born
in Calgary and married Gerald Vander
Velde in 1937, living and farming one
mile north of Martin Vander Velde’s
farm, where they raised their two sons
– Allan and Don.

Don had been born in 1945, and
started his education in a one-room
school in Strathmore, before moving to
the newly built Sam Crowther School
in 1951, then to Carseland High School,
followed by Olds College. This is where
he met his future wife Florence McBee.
They advised, there were 200 male
students, and only 22 female students!
Florence’s family on her father’s side,
came from Missouri and travelled to
Springfield, Ore. in
1850, along with
many others on the
Oregon Trail Trek.
There is said to be
a grave marker at
every
milestone!
Her
grand-father
Melvin
McBee,
born in Oregon
in 1889, came to
DeWinton in 1915.
Bought a half section, to farm and
build barns for local farmers, as well
as a half section of
treed land near Priddis, where he operated a sawmill. Her father, Wallace,
was born in Calgary in 1916, and later bought and farmed the half section
of his dad’s. This land needed to be
cleared of trees, before crops could be
grown. Florence’s mother Joan Smith,
born in Somerset, England came to the
Carstairs Area with her family, when
she was three years old. She was the
third of 13 children. She met and married Wallace McBee of DeWinton in
1936. Joan is now 93, still living on her
own at the farm, with one of Florences
sister’s living nearby.
Florence was born in Calgary in 1945,
and had three sisters and one brother,
and lived on the farm near DeWinton
with her family. She started school at
the one-room Alexander School, three
miles away, and rode her horse to/from.
For Grades 5 to 9, she was bused to Red
Deer Lake School, then attended high
school at Henry Wise Wood in Calgary,
before going to Olds College.
Don and Florence were married in
1965, at the Millarville Christ Church –
a unique upright log building, built in
1896. They have three sons – Shaun, Michael and Scott, who have given them
eight grandchildren and two greatgranddaughters. Shaun and his family
are the fifth generation Vander Veldes
living across the road from their parents. Michael lives in Strathmore, and
Scott lives in Calgary. Scott’s daughter
Maddison was the first female Vander
Velde in 80 years, born in 2000.

Following their marriage, Don and
Florence originally rented grandfather
Martin’s farm, and used Gerald’s machinery. When they became a mixed
farm with 50 head of cows and annual crops, they purchased Gerald’s
farm machinery. Gerald bought Don’s
first tractor, which was a Case L.A. and
pulled a 12-foot cultivator, whilst burning 45 gallons of gas per day, and using one gallon of oil! In 1983, they had
a farm auction and followed this by
renting out the cropland, but kept the
pasture, hay land and cattle. This gave
them both more time to pursue other
ventures. Don obtained his Real Estate license, and tried selling farm and
residential land, but, it wasn’t for him,
so he next obtained his Auctioneer License, which he still enjoys today.
His community activities include
working with CPS as an Auxiliary
Member for six years, Carseland Lions
member, President of the Carseland
AG Society, was a Security Specialist at
the Athletes Village at the 1988 Winter
Olympics in Calgary, and is now the
County Councillor for the Carseland
Area.
Florence was a member of the Carseland Public Benefit Club which recently
celebrated its 100th birthday, worked as
the Activity Convenor at The Strathmore
Hospital for 26 years, retiring when the
Long Term Care portion of the hospital
was shut down in 2013.
Changes they’ve seen in the area include: when Hwy 22X/901 was built
in 1983, it divided their farmyard, and
they had to move or rebuild the buildings that were now located on the north
side. The loss of grain elevators that regally announced the location of small
towns and communities, across the
province, and the new farming practices, which give an entirely new meaning
to kids “doing after school chores.”
Not like it was 70 years ago.

Be bright and run for a cause
ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Contributor

For the sixth year in a row, the Foothills Advocacy in Motion Society (AIMS) in Strathmore is
hosting their annual run but decided to change
things up a little bit.
This year the run has been called the Chinook
Financial Tight and Bright Family Run and will
take place on August 22.
“We wanted to brighten it up a bit this year,”
said Bev Roppel, the program manager for Strathmore AIMS.
“What we are focusing more on is sunshine, being bright and out there, so people can see us.”
Participants will receive one of five different colour T-shirts with bright colours: yellow, orange,
lime green, blue and pink. The event will consist
of distances of 10 km, five km, or a 2 km option
for participants under the age of 14, starting at
Kinsmen Park and ending at Greys Lake.

The society attracted contributions from their
main sponsors Chinook Financial and the Strathmore and District Agricultural Society, which contributed 75 rodeo tickets.
There were also smaller donations from other
organizations and members of the community.
AIMS is still looking for more runners to take part
in the race, with a goal of 100 runners.
Roppel explained that the money raised from
the run will help to support the society’s program
and the individuals they help in the Strathmore
area. AIMS helps to support adults with disabilities find employment, to contribute to a meaningful day in their lives.
For those interested in taking part in the event
there are many ways to register. There will be late
registration on the morning of the race, online
registration at the Running Room or physical registration at the AIMS office. Entry is $35 per entrant, $30 for 2 km Kids Run, and $30 per entrant
group rate by Aug. 14

what we have
given

Thanks to amazing people
To the Editor
I need to do an incredibly well deserved
shout out to the amazing person who returned
my Visa gift card in the no frills parking lot
three weekends ago. My husband dropped our
$500 card in the parking lot as we were leaving
and heading to Co-op.
When we were paying
at Co-op, we realized the card was missing so
we went back with a sinking feeling it would
be gone.

My husband went up to the till we
had paid at and asked the cashier if they had
seen it and a young man who also worked
there said “ that was your card? Someone found
it in the parking lot and brought it in”.

It takes
a very honest person to return $500 that they
could have easily taken. So thank you from the
bottom of my heart to the amazing person with
the kind heart who found it and turned it in!
Wish I could give you a hug!!

Playground signs needed
To the Editor
Having spent the last six years living on the east side
of Kinsmen Park, I feel it is time to vent my frustrations.
The park is a gem within the confines of Strathmore and
is enjoyed by many residents on a daily basis.
One has to wonder why a few individuals feel they have
to spin circles in the gravel area and throw their beer cans
out their vehicle windows. They also race along the east
service road which is adjacent to a playground area for
small children.
Unfortunately, this is an accident waiting to happen as
vehicles park next to the playground and children dart
onto the road between the parked vehicles. Having spent
29 years in law enforcement, I know that police resources are limited. Perhaps the town would consider placing
playground signs on the east service road in an effort to
slow these offenders down. This would be the first step in
prevention and hopefully prevent a tragic accident.

ARGRA plans for bigger event;
town’s help requested
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Despite coming up short of meeting an expected attendance target, the Alberta Rockies Gay
Rodeo Association (ARGRA) is eager to get back
into the saddle with an even bigger event, one
they hope to partner up on with the town.
While ARGRA was disappointed with the number of patrons attending this year’s Canadian
Rockies International Rodeo and Music Festival,
and rumours circulated that the organization may
relocate their event to another town, ARGRA approached town council for help.
As a non-profit organization, ARGRA’s mandate
states that once the bills are taken care of and
funds are put aside for next year, the remainder
of the proceeds go back into the community.
While the budget suffered this year, the board
members are already looking towards next year,
ambitious to partner with the town on a Canada
Day event that would require financial support.
“We’re looking for help from the town in the
way of a grant or loan to help us move forward,”
said Craig McPhee, events director for ARGRA.
“We unfortunately took a bit of a hit to our budget
this year, because we didn’t get the attendance.
But we want to keep going, we love these rodeo grounds … and we have nothing but respect
for the Strathmore Ag Society and the help that
they’ve given us over the time that we’ve been
here, and we want to keep that relationship going.”
McPhee approached town council on July 22,
with a proposal for a Canada Day concert that
would involve various music genres – country,
old rock, alternative – and feature Terri Clark as
headliner.
While Councillor Brad Walls remarked he heard
rumours that Reba McIntyre would be performing on the Saturday, McPhee teased the performer
they have in mind has an even bigger reputation.
The three-day event, planned for July 1 to July 3,
would also include a rodeo school, and a small
midway to accommodate families on the grounds.
“There’s so much involved in putting this event
together every year, and we have a huge group
of dedicated volunteers … that put on our events
throughout the year,” McPhee said. “This year we
opened ourselves up to the town and Calgary and
southern Alberta like we’ve never had before. So
along with that, of course, we get the negativity
as well. But the one nice thing about Strathmore
and everywhere else, the positives greatly outweigh the negative comments that we got. So that
was good to see.”
ARGRA, an entirely volunteer-based organization, relocated their event, locally known as the
gay rodeo, to Strathmore seven years ago. After
years of introducing the town to eccentric rodeo
contests – wild drag racing, goat dressing, and
steer decorating – the event attracted participation across North America and for the first time
gained media attention internationally this year.
Although the organization took a new approach
and organized a music festival featuring the likes
of LeAnn Rimes and the Village People, the attendance didn’t meet their projected 5,000 patrons.

Yet some local businesses, local officials, Strathmore and District Agriculture Society members,
and the ARGRA board members have noticed significant growth and impact on the town.
“I have a business downtown in Strathmore and
we see lots and lots of people connected with
your rodeo,” said Councillor Rocky Blokland to
McPhee. “I’m pretty sure of my own mind, being here for 15 years, I’ve seen more people with
your rodeo downtown than I do at Heritage Days,
other than the parade, and I really hope that you
guys keep moving forward with this next year.”
Before the rodeo and music festival took place
at the end of June, ARGRA distributed over $3,000
to numerous recipients including the Strathmore
Community Football Association Badgers, the
Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games, the Calgary Regional Child and Family Services office in Strathmore, and to the ladies hockey tournament.
McPhee made an appearance at the regular
council meeting to open up a dialogue with town
council, and was unable to propose a monetary
amount at that time.
“I’m really excited about the opportunity to join
our Canada Day festivities and look for common
ground in terms of being able to provide an enhanced opportunity for entertainment in the community and I like the music festival concept,” said
Councillor Denise Peterson. “I think Strathmore
is ready to have a great music festival and clearly
(they’re) the group to do it. I believe that it will
continue to gain acceptance and appreciation in
the community.”
While all of council praised the organization’s
efforts and successes over the years, some councillors made sure to point out the economic
downturn and strains placed on budgets overall.
As Councillor Sobol commended the ARGRA
representative on their optimism and willingness
to expand the events, he pointed out that entertainment contributions are usually the first ones
to be cut. Councillor Steve Grajczyk echoed Sobol’s remarks.
“We do have a small budget for donations, but
these are tough times for everybody and we have
to watch who we lend money to because of various reasons,” said Grajczyk. “We can’t make a financial decision here tonight.”
Town Councillor and president of the Strathmore and District Agricultural Society Brad Walls,
praised ARGRA on the ease of working together
and their growth – having noticed significant rise
in the number of contestants and spectators in
the stands. Pointing out that the problems are
similar to the Strathmore Stampede rodeo when
they first started out, he encouraged the organization to continue with their efforts.
As council is open to entertaining the idea of
partnering up with ARGRA on a Canada Day
event, McPhee was instructed to send a letter to
administration asking for consideration.
McPhee is confident the future is bright for both
parties: “To build an event that, if we can make it
through these tough economic times because oil
eventually will rebound … then we’ll be in a position to make an even bigger splash on the festival
scene in southern Alberta and help Strathmore
along the lines with that.”

Friends raise money for cancer
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

For the past three years, Strathmoreraised friends Katrina Janzen and
Joanne Hermanson donated their time
and got involved with one big fundraising effort, to raise money for various charity groups. As both women
were affected by cancer through family
members and friends undergoing treatment, they will brace a 200 km bike
ride and push their bodies to their limits to help raise money for the ongoing
battle against Cancer.
With the 2015 Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer quickly approaching in a
week’s time, Janzen and Hermanson
were tasked with raising a minimum of
$2,500 before embarking on the twoday cycling event.
Janzen, who already raised $3,200,
started training on a wind-trainer, a
stationary bike, in August, shortly after signing up to take part in the event.
While participating in charity events
is becoming the norm for Janzen and
Hermanson, who have raised money
for the Children’s Wish Foundation and
a Poker Rally in the past, the decision
to raise money to fight cancer was personal.
Janzen’s father was diagnosed with
prostate cancer in early 2014, and after surgery failed to remove all of it, required hormone therapy and radiation
therapy– a six-week intensive trial.
“Trials like that can’t keep going if
fundraising and the Ride to Conquer
Cancer don’t happen,” said Janzen.
“When dad got diagnosed I thought
I had to try and do something more.
We’ve all been affected by it and we all
know the outcome of cancer if nobody
does anything about it or no research
is being done. The biggest thing is, yes,
we’ve all been affected by it. I can’t
name one person that doesn’t know
somebody or isn’t directly related to
somebody who has passed away or
fought cancer.”
In speaking with friends, family, coworkers, and a sponsorship from the
Fun Country Riding Club – of which
Janzen is a director, she was able to surpass the minimum fundraising requirement. Hermanson, on the other hand,
raised $480 and continues to look for
donations to sponsor her bike ride.
“Together we do some sort of thing
every year, and knowing that there’s a
few more people in my life that are affected, we thought we’d do something
totally different and the bike ride came
into play,” said Hermanson. “When
you think closely about it, somehow,
in some way, it’s there, in family, or
friends. So I really have to get going on
fundraising.”
According to CauseForce, an agency
that helps non-profit organizations raise
money, the ride raised $7.9 million last
year and included 1,768 participants.
The funds that accumulated through
donations during 2014 event fuelled
trial and research programs: clinical trials, the Tomorrow Project, and Alberta
Cancer Research Biorepository. The

ride has raised $46 million since 2009,
with funds allocated to cancer prevention and screening, enhanced care and
research across Alberta.
“At the Alberta Cancer Foundation,
enhancing the lives of patients and
their families is at the core of everything we do,” said Myka Osinchuk, CEO
of the Alberta Cancer Foundation. “The
Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer allows the Alberta Cancer Foundation to
accelerate progress by driving investment in research, prevention, screening
and enhancing care at the Tom Baker
Cancer Centre, Cross Cancer Institute,
and 15 other cancer centres across the
province.”
The ride will begin at Canada Olympic Park, move west into Bragg Creek
and finish the day in Okotoks for a total distance of nearly 120 km. The bikers are then making the same trip back
the following day. Janzen and Hermanson completed an 85-km long training
ride last weekend.
The 2015 Enbridge Ride to Conquer
Cancer will take place August 8-9. To
sponsor Joanne Hermanson you can
find her page on the Enbridge Ride
to Conquer Cancer website by visiting
www.conquercancer.ca.

Monitor your emotions
with HeartMath
ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Contributor

Langdon local Taylor Ferguson found comfort in a
holistic approach to manage his stress, following a
change in his relationship
status last spring. Ferguson
is a participant in the HeartMath program that helps its
patients by teaching them to
control their heart rates, and
thus their emotions, while
getting rid of stress.
Ferguson started the program after he went through
a separation that left him
feeling highly anxious and
stressed out. The program
has helped to keep him
grounded.
“The best way I can describe it is like a eyes-wideopen meditation,” said Ferguson.
“It is a form of meditation
in my eyes that helps to keep
you grounded.”
A small monitoring device
is attached to the ear of the
participant, to help monitor
the heart rate on a sensor.
Depending on the heart rate,
the sensor will light up in
red, blue, or green. Ferguson
explained the red light indicates a lot of cortisol, which
is also known as the stress
hormone. The blue light indicates that the mind is in a
neutral state, and green light
reflects the user in a calm

state, which means there are
hormones in the mind counteracting the cortisol. Once
the person is connected to
the device their eyes have
to follow certain lights that
move in an up-and-down sequence. The user has to inhale when the lights go up
and exhale when the lights
go down. This breathing exercise helps to regulate the
heartbeat and calm the mind
during a stressful situation.
When
Ferguson
first
started with HeartMath he
worked with Yvonne Harris,
a certified instructor from
Chestermere who’s also
an Alberta Health Services
(AHS) mental health outreach worker. They worked
one-on-one for four 45-minute sessions as well as a
two-day workshop. This also
helped to teach him how to
use the HeartMath machine.
The non-profit organization that features the HeartMath has intentions of
getting participants to reconnect with their heart, deal
with stress, and self-regulate
emotions. The AHS was introduced to the program in
2008 and so far have trained
26 staff to be instructors.
Ferguson highly recommends the HeartMath program, and said: “I think it is
a really wonderful program,
that can really steer people
in the right direction.”

Elmer and Leona
Jensen: An
everlasting pair

On Target On Time

ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Contributor

Over a century ago, Standard resident Elmer
Jensen came into the world, and this year, will
watch his wife Leona blow out her 100 birthday
candles next month. Up until last year, the couple, who has been married for a remarkable 75
years, enjoyed driving their truck to the feedlots
to check on cattle, and driving out to Standard for
a cup of coffee with their daughter-in-law.
Since Elmer gave up his driver’s licence on his
milestone birthday last year, the couple have noticed a change in their usually active lifestyle,
which they attribute to their similar interests in
getting involved in the community.
“We are pretty compatible,” said Leona. “We
have agreed on almost everything and we both
came from Christian families.”
The parents of four, who spent most of their
long life as ranchers near Standard, have had a
pretty colourful life.
Although Elmer was born near his childhood
home in Standard in 1914, Leona graced her family with her presence in Ottumwa, Iowa in 1915.
With the families aware of each other, Leona and
Elmer met at his brother’s Iowa graduation, and
their love story began.
When the couple said their vows in 1940, they
had no idea they would one day be celebrating
their 75th year wedding anniversary. Over the
years, the couple has played a big part in Standard’s community life. Not only were they in-

volved in a number of organizations, such as the
Homeschool Association, the Farmers’ Union, and
the Lutheran Church, but Elmer served as mayor
of the village for 13 years.
As the years went on, and Leona lost her mobility, the couple moved to the Sagewood Senior
Community in Strathmore. While Leona is unable
to partake in many activities she was able to actively participate in previously - such as quilting,
sewing, and singing in a choir – the couple still
enjoys each other company by snuggling up in
each others’ rooms to watch the news.
“Considering everything, we’ve had a pretty
good life,” said Elmer. “I feel like it is important
for people to do what they want to do and to have
an occupation that they enjoy doing.”
Leona will celebrate her 100th birthday on Aug.
7 with her family and friends in Standard.

Rosebud Chamber Music Festival
kicks off 2015 season
LAUREEN F. GUENTHER

A music reading party on July 27 opened this
year’s Rosebud Chamber Music Festival (RCMF).
The RCMF Ensemble and guest musicians played
hours of unrehearsed music.
This was a much more relaxed event than the
chamber music concerts I’ve attended before. We
– children, teens and adults – sat around tables
in the Haskayne-Kenney Mercantile, enjoying barbecue food and drinks, mingling with musicians
between their sets.
I was glad to see lots of children and teenagers
in the audience, and thought it was a great way
for them to enjoy chamber music in a comfortable environment. I hope it will help to dismantle
some common misconceptions about classical
music.
The RCMF Ensemble – Keith Hamm on viola,
Aaron Schwebel on violin, Sheila Jaffe on violin,
Arnold Choi on cello and Peter Longworth on
piano – opened the party with Schuman’s String
Quintet.
They were later joined, in various groupings, by
Johanne Perron on cello, from Mount Royal University, and Timothy Dawson, who plays double
bass with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

jazz pianist who was born in Alberta, gave us a
foretaste of his July 29 solo concert by playing
‘Circle Dances.’ It was a highlight for me when
he played the keys of the grand piano while also
reaching inside to pluck its strings. It was also a
treat to hear Jaffe and Perron, a mother-daughter duo, play together, with Peter Longworth on
piano. My favorite was Schubert’s Trout Quintet,
featuring Dawson on the double bass.
In this relaxed context, it was fun to watch the
musicians smile and signal each other so they
could keep time, but despite their lack of practice on these pieces, their music was amazing and
impressive.
Dawson, who’s originally from Edmonton, has
also established ‘Beethoven Returns to the Badlands,’ which has a joint performance with the
RCMF in Drumheller on July 30, when he and the
RCMF Ensemble will perform together.
Dawson also hosted a Kids Makin’ Music event
for Rosebud children on July 28, jointly creating a
musical composition, then performing it for family and friends.
The Rosebud Chamber Music Festival will host
a concert at the Three Hills Arts Academy on July
31, and a final performance at Rosebud Church
on Sunday, Aug. 2. Learn more at rosebudchambermusic.com. Tickets are available at rosebudtheatre.com or 403-677-2001.

Amid negotiations between the City
of Calgary and its regional water customers for new Master Servicing Agreements (MSAs), Strathmore residents will
face increased charges over the next few
years – an agreement town council entered into on July 22.
A Strathmore-owned 43 km long pipeline, the East Calgary Regional Water
Line (ECRWL) connecting the town to
the City of Calgary is essential in supplying and delivering potable water. Calgary completed a Cost of Service study
from 2011 to 2014 to determine a fixed
and a usage charge for the cost of water
used. All customers of the City of Calgary participated in the study: Airdrie,
Cochrane, Chestermere, Tsuu T’ina, and
Strathmore.
The study provided an estimated cost,

deemed appropriate, for the city to build
water infrastructure to accommodate
regional water customers and included
transmission as well as Water Treatment
Plant costs.
New fixed charges, based on the projected maximum daily flow to the town
of Strathmore in the MSA – necessary
to determine the amount of infrastructure needed by Calgary to provide the
required amount of water – were proposed. The new fixed charges replace
the Regional Growth Charge, which was
originally agreed upon for 2013 and
2014.
“The fixed cost, the easiest way, it’s the
amount of infrastructure the City of Calgary has to build to deliver the amount
of water we said we need as a maximum
capacity at the end of that contract period,” said Gord Elenko, director of engineering for the Town of Strathmore.
“The Master Servicing Agreement
does require alignment with the City
of Calgary water restrictions if necessary. With those risks, there is also some
offsetting opportunities, and these opportunities would include potential for
improvement and control over metering, improve leak detection that we may
want to do, and emergency response
that’s more closely coordinated with the
City of Calgary than it is now.”
Strathmore will be subject to two
types of increases. The fixed component
rate charge will spike three per cent in
2016, 2017, and 2018. The volume component rate charge, which is based on
consumption, increases by 6.1 per cent
for each of the previously mentioned
years. According to Elenko, the overall
cost, including both usage cost and fixed
cost, increases by 26.7 per cent over the
next three years of the contract. The water increases shown in 2015 are already
included in the rates. The City of Calgary provides only water services to the
Town of Strathmore, who will retain its
water license as part of the agreement.
“It should be added that this was a
very, very long process, that had moved
from much bigger numbers then, to
what we’re looking at today,” said Councillor Bob Sobol. “It’s not a good news
story, but it could’ve been a much worse
story.”
While the regional water service from
Calgary involves some risks that need
addressing, according to town staff, the
town also gains numerous benefits.
Elenko was concerned about the reliance on water quality at the delivery
point, future growth of Calgary that may
demand a revised delivery point, the
requirement to align with the Calgary
water restrictions, and the ECRWL is a
single supply line subject to damage or
failure.
However, council was also made aware
of the benefits, including the security of
supply for potable water, consistency of
quality, reduced capital and operating
cost for the water supply treatment, and

the alignment with water conservation
programs and targets. Elenko advised
that the two specific areas to pay attention to are water conservation and leak
detection.
Although Strathmore consumes nearly
one percent of Calgary’s water supply,
waning infrastructure is resulting in a
30 per cent loss in town that, according
to Chief Administrative Officer Dwight
Stanford, is not being billed.
“If you take the big meter at Calgary…
there’s about 30 percent loss,” said Stanford. “A lot of that, all of that is in town.
We’re looking at various options on how
to improve that.”
Strathmore has received some upgrades to its underground infrastructure over the past few years, and Elenko
assured council that any major leaks
would be detected fairly quickly due to
current monitoring in place. He added
that entering into the agreement provides opportunities for enhanced operational effectiveness of the ECRWL water
supply pipeline. This would allow for
additional control over metering, emergency response agreements with Calgary, and improved leak detection and
monitoring.
“One of the reasons that I would support it in the positive, is that there’s
been a lot of good thought and good
work going into the principles that drive
this,” said Councillor Denise Peterson. “I
feel there’s a certain amount of trust in
this document and all the players that
are in this, and in terms of us supporting the people that will eventually pay
for this service.”
Council passed a motion to enter into
the Master Servicing Agreement between Calgary and the Town of Strathmore for the supply of potable water
through the East Calgary Water Line on
July 22. There will be a final legal review as part of entering into a Master
Servicing Agreement.

Investigation into fatal collision
near Chestermere continues
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Strathmore RCMP attended a serious four-vehicle collision near Chestermere on July 24, that
claimed the lives of two, including a two-monthold child.
An investigation continues into the crash that involved four eastbound-travelling vehicles on HWY
1 and Range Road 285 at approximately 1:30 p.m.
on Friday.
While the male drivers and lone occupants of a
Chevrolet panel van and a truck with a fifth wheel
attached sustained no injuries, a male driver of a
Nissan Frontier suffered from minor injuries. He
has since been released from the hospital.
However, a female passenger travelling with her
two-month-old child, the father of the child, and a
family member was pronounced deceased at the
scene. The male driver was uninjured, while the
infant and the third adult male passenger were

The infant has since succumbed to her injuries.
The investigation is ongoing and RCMP are asking all witnesses to immediately call the Strathmore RCMP at 403-934-3968, their local police service, or Crime Stoppers.

County gets rec assessment update
JUSTIN SEWARD

Times Reporter

Edmonton-based RC Strategies approached Wheatland County Council
with their rec assessment findings for
the area, five months after council requested an assessment to be conducted.
The assessment focused on community engagement, and on how many
of the Wheatland County communities that own their facilities are putting
them to use. The buildings that were
noted were the six community halls
owned and operated by community
associations: one ice arena (Gleichen
and District Agricultural Society), two

curling rinks (Gleichen and Carseland),
Severn Dam that’s owned by the province, and the Gleichen Library. In addition to these facilities there are still
the ones that exist in the villages and
Strathmore.
Marcy Field of the Community Enhancement Regional Board (CERB) was
on hand for the presentation and liked
where the county was heading with the
report.
“They’re looking at the long-range
needs of the community,” said Field.
“So coming in and having that assessment done, really provides the background information that they need, to
determine plans for 10-20 years from

Jessey nominated for
Beta Gamma Sigma Award
JUSTIN SEWARD

Times Reporter

Langdon’s Douglas Jessey was one of
45 business students to be inducted into
the Canisius College chapter of Beta
Gamma Sigma in the business honour
society of the Richard J. Wehle School
of Business.
The Beta Gamma Sigma
is an international honour
society that serves business
programs accredited by the
Associations to Advance Collegiate School’s of Business.
Jessey, who graduated from
the Western New York private
University this past year, was
honoured to receive the nomination.
“I was one of the Top 10 per cent and
there was not that many of us,” said
Jessey.
“It’s quite an honour and really proud
for being able to accomplish that.”
He added that much credit to the
award went to having played NCAA
hockey for the school team and their efforts to keep the student-athletes on a
set schedule.
“I think right off the start, my very
first day of college, coach said ‘compete
in the classroom’ and that kind of stuck
in my head,” said Jessey.

“From then on I was trying to be the
best and the top guy. I think the competitive nature he laid out and I have on
my own, contributed to me receiving it.”
When he first decided to go to Buffalo, he knew he was going to a recognized business school and that it would
pose a challenge but one that he was
willing to accept in order to succeed.
“When I went in there,
they set the tone and showed
you how it was done,” said
Jessey.
He had no idea what the
award meant until he was
told about it and received it
at a special ceremony. The
fact that the society is a big
network made the award that much
more valuable.
“The society, it has some pretty good
perks and it’s a big network and hopefully you can work with other people
and move forward in life,” said Jessey.
As if this award wasn’t exciting,
Jessey took home the Top Finance Student Award.
He just signed a professional contract
to play hockey in France next year and
is going to take it one year at a time.
If that path does not work out he’s going to test the waters with his finance
degree.

now.”
With CERB being in the advisory role,
they can now take that report and bring
back recommendations from their board
meeting that will be held in August.
“One of the wonderful things about
this group is just how they work together and listen to each other,” said Field.
“I think it’ll be a great conversation
and it gives us information that we were
lacking. It will really give us a better
foundation for our discussion.”
Field felt that the needs were noticeable right across the county and not just
limited to one area.
“We see that in the number of applications that are put forward in community
enhancement funding,” said Field.
“We see that we had $1.2 million in
requests for various projects across the
county but we only had approximately
$400,000 to be able to meet those fees.”
The most notable indoor recreational
facilities that could be more available or
upgraded that people were surveyed for

were the walking and running tracks at
44 per cent and gym-type spaces at 30
per cent. The top outdoor facilities were
the walking trails systems at 41 per cent
and campgrounds at 28 per cent.
Wheatland County Communications
Officer Lisa Bastarache said now that
the report is out they will have to clarify
some items in the package, but she feels
they are going in the right direction.
“This is mostly for research so we
know where we’re at with everything
and then we’ll have together and do
some planning,” said Bastarache.
“The next step will be to actually meet
with all these communities associations
that we’re talking about. The individual
groups within the county and see what
they’re looking for in specific, and come
back and figure out what fits into the
budget and what works with our planning.”
She added that some of the information needed to be updated in the report
and RC Strategies is going to revise it.

Cowboys and cowgirls gave the 58th annual Rockyford Rodeo crowd some great entertainment with skilled riding at their outdoor arena. Strathmore’s own Keenan Desmet won the bull riding on the Sunday and pocketed $1,500.

58th annual Rockyford Rodeo a success
JUSTIN SEWARD

Hundreds flocked to Rockyford last
weekend putting on another great
show during the 58th annual Lions
Rockyford Rodeo, making it the largest one yet in the Village of Rockyford’s history.
A record number of participants,
over 500 contestants, took to the arena for a chance to win some money
and entertain the crowd.
Rockyford Rodeo Arena Director,
Warren Kalbhen, said ticket sales
stayed consistent again this year and
the committee is trying to make it a
fairly local family event.
“They were right in line with what
they were last year,” said Kalbhen.

“It’s a small town rodeo and you
have to try to keep it local as you can.
Sheep riding and little kids wild horse
racing help the families through.”
Despite the wet weather on Sunday, the rest of the event was sunny
and ran smoothly.
“Everything turned out excellent,”
said Kalbhen.
“The rodeo contestants got to compete without any rain so that was
excellent. I think they really liked
the grounds, we spend a lot of time
on the grounds. The grounds are in
top shape and we’ll try to keep them
clean.”
The parade was a popular event
again this year with Rockyford’s main
street at almost maximum capacity.
“We seem to get a lot of people

coming in. It’s a good thing to be a
part of with the reputation we have,”
said Kalbhen.
Strathmore’s Keenan Desmet rode
the bull to victory on Sunday and
earned $1,500 for the win.
“I felt pretty good,” said Desmet.
“It’s my first rodeo in two years that
I’ve rode a bull and I had drawn a
pretty good bull and I ended up winning and felt pretty good to ride.”
He added he did not have a strategy going in, but with a little help
from some people in the business
was able to conquer the bull.
“I had some pretty good help with
Guy Johnson, Bob Hartell and my
dad Leonard, just been helping me
get on the bull and telling me what
to do,” said Desmet.

The CFR Chemicals Bisons hockey club
is once again searching for a new head
coach, shortly after Adam Redmond, who
recently filled the position, resigned to
take an associate head-coaching job with
the Calgary Canucks junior team.
The team received the unexpected news
of Redmond’s decision earlier last week
and soon after began looking for a replacement.
Bisons General Manager, Wayne Hansen, said life and business will go on as
usual and there are many candidates still
available for the position.
“We’ll go back to our list and see what’s
in there for a fit,” said Hansen. “If there’s
nothing in there, then we’ll explore numerous other options. We have many resources and many ideas as to what we’re
going to do and over the course of the
next week we’ll deal with that.”
The organization will consider qualified
candidates in order to find the best coach
for the job.
“If there is nobody on that list we’re
comfortable with, then we’ll go to Plan B,”
said Hansen.
Plan B will include talking to coaches in
the industry and seeing if any that did not
apply before would be interested now.
Also if the successful candidate has a
teaching background, there will be a position available through the Bisons connection with the school.
“Being connected with the school, that
opens up a lot of doors,” said Hansen.
“We’ll go back to that well and we’ll see
what’s in there.”
He described Redmond’s resignation as
disappointing, but the organization will
move on and expect to have a replacement
hired in early August.
Redmond would like to thank the Bisons organization for the opportunity, but
felt he could not pass up the job that presented itself with the Canucks.
“This was the hardest decision of my
life and I knew I would be letting down
so many great people,” said Redmond. “It
went against so many of my principles,
loyalty, sacrifice and commitment. In the
end what it came down to was the opportunity to move to the next level.”

The Strathmore Thunder U21 girls
fast pitch team will have to pay attention to the little details on the field if
they hope to medal in the eight-team
Western Junior Canadian Championships in Surrey, B.C. Aug. 6-9.
Head coach Lanky Johnson knows
that what they got away with in provincials a couple of weeks ago will not
work out in the Western Championships.
“The biggest difference is that it’s going to be another level up,” said Johnson. “Even the few mistakes that were
created here, that we got away with,
we won’t be able to make them out
there the same way.”
Whether it’s at the plate or out on
the field, Johnson could not emphasize
enough how the players will have to
communicate on the field and always
be aware what is happening during
the plays.
“When they go to bat, knowing what
the job is and where the runners are,”
said Johnson. “Infield again, focusing
on defense and anticipating the two or
three options before each pitch, what
the play might be depending on how
the ball is hit. The more mentally prepared you are and relaxed doing it, the
better success you’ll have.”
For most of the roster, it will be their
third to fifth time at a post-provincial

tournament, either at Westerns or Nationals, and those players will be relied on to provide a leadership role.
“There is some experience there and
we hope to use that to our advantage
a little bit to help the ones that haven’t
been there before,” said Johnson.
He added that being a youthful
squad and sticking together is where
the girls will see results, but cautioned
that it will be tough with most teams
there being in the 20-21-age range
throughout their line ups.
This will be centre fielder Jordan
Mitchell’s first time at a tournament
of this calibre and she said she really
doesn’t know what to expect, but with
the team’s success as of late, expects
them to be fine.
“We play better as a team when
we’re all playing together and talking
lots,” said Mitchell.
Having won her second provincials
this year, she really enjoyed the experience and is looking forward to the
opportunity at Westerns.
“I’m really excited, lots of hype,” said
Mitchell.
Veteran pitcher Kristyn Johnson
feels that the team made a lot of progression from the thought of not playing this season to winning a provincial
title, and it would be special to cap it
off with a Western Crown.
“For a lot of the girls, a lot of us
didn’t think we were going to be playing this season,” said Johnson. “To
come together again after all these
years and play together one more
time, and win a provincial and go to a
Western (Championship), it’s really exciting, proves we’ve put in some hard
work.”
She added that this team will be able
to rise to the level of play that will be
presented at Westerns.
“We usually do that, we usually
match our competitors really well,”
said Johnson,
She thinks the key to settling in will
be to get to the fields, get rid of the
nerves and prove that they are deserving of a spot in this championships.

Mosquitos battle hard at provincials
JUSTIN SEWARD

The Strathmore Mosquito #2 Reds baseball
team gave it their best shot at Provincials last
weekend in Fort Saskatchewan, where they
placed third.
Team officials felt the Mosquito Reds started
the tournament off nervous which was then
taken advantage of by the co-host Fort Saskatchewan #1 team.
It resulted in the Fort Saskatchewan team gaining seven runs early on without giving the Reds
a chance for a comeback, winning 21-2.
However, the boys quickly recovered from the
loss and showed determination in the second
game, giving them an opportunity to play for a
medal on Sunday.
“The team played their best game of the year,
with great starting pitching from Jared Rilling,
then Luke Aldridge, middle relief, and Asher Rilling to close the game,” said Coach Alan Aldridge.
“We were leading going into the bottom of the
sixth inning, 11-10, but Lacombe was able to get
two runs and win 12-11. Great game with some
timely hits, a few breaks our way, it should have
been a win.”
In the final game, the Reds relied on strong
pitching from Rohdy Yates and Matt Dirks to pro-

pel them to a convincing 22-11 victory over Fort
Saskatchewan #2 to finish off the season.
“Very happy with the way the team played this
year, we were a very young team, five first year,
and five underage players,” said Aldridge “The future of baseball in Strathmore is bright.”

Fargey said that moving forward this will provide girls
some good growth opportunities in lacrosse and he is hopeful to expand the team beyond
the bantam and midget levels
pending the number of players
that come out.
“It strictly comes down to
numbers,” said Fargey.
“If there are enough girls, we
would love to expand. As of
right now we are just scrounging together enough to put together a team at the bantam
and midget level.”
There were a couple of teams
that saw success throughout
the season, and for those teams
that meant winning big tournaments or coming close to making an appearance in the finals.
“We had both peewee ‘B’
teams go with 11-1 records,”
said Fargey.
“One team lost out in the
city semi-finals and then our
combined peewee team won
the Canada Day tournament,
which is one of the largest box
lacrosse tournaments in North

America. Our bantam ‘B’ team
went 10-2 and were the city
champions, they went to the
Provincials and battled hard
but struggled a bit in Grande
Prairie.”
The players were not the only
success stories of the season, as
coaches came a long way with
the help of ELEV8 Lacrosse
and National Lacrosse League
Players (NLL) Geoff and Bobby
Snider who assisted with their
coaching development.
“They ran practices for all
of our teams which was great
for the coaches and players as
they all got to spend a private
practice with NLL players,” said
Fargey.
“We are hoping that this will
bring us all up to the next level to be able to educate our
coaches and players on the
proper way of the game.”
He added the sheer growth
numbers gives the club the encouragement that they can continue to grow from the younger
age categories and build for
years to come.

Strathmore Lacrosse Club
saw a tremendous amount
of improvement and support
throughout the different levels
of teams, and a couple of the
teams having deep runs into
the playoffs bodes well for the
sport for the future.
“We had growth at the younger levels (which is where we
need to grow),” said Vice President Scott Fargey.
“And (we) had lots of parents
who were willing to step up
and learn the game and volunteer.”
A positive sign in the right
direction for the club was the
enthusiasm the girls teams

they wanted to learn the game

“I think the girls were really
enthusiastic about learning the
game and were willing to compete even though they were not

HANDLING DISCOURAGEMENT
I read an illustration about Martin
Luther who was discouraged terribly. His wife went to the bedroom
and came out in a black mourning
outfit. Luther asked her about it
and she said she was going to
a funeral. He asked whose. She
said it was God’s. He replied, “The
Pope’s trying to kill me, my friends
have turned on me and now my
wife is a heretic.” She said, “The
only reason I thought God was
dead was because of the way you
are acting.”
Do people think that God is
dead by the way we are acting
sometimes? Do we allow our
circumstances to take over and
we give up and behave in way that
tells others around us that God is
dead? We live in a world filled with
discouraging situations.
Without question, one of the
reasons why Christians do not
ascend to the highest level of spiritual maturity is discouragement.
When people feel disappointed
they are less likely to love, to give
or to serve, as they should. The
question is, “What do you do when
the conditions in your life change?
What do you do when hard times
come? Do you give up on God,
or you keep praising and serving
Him?
Someone illustrated this truth with
a practical everyday life example.

They asked the question: “Are you
a thermometer or are you a thermostat believer?” A thermometer
is circumstantially led. Depending
on the temperature, the mercury
moves up or down. Everything
around a thermometer controls
how the thermometer works.
A thermostat influences its surroundings. Unlike the thermometer,
the thermostat controls the heat
or coldness around it. So, what
type of believer are you? Do you
influence your surroundings?
Or, are you influenced by your
surroundings?
There is a great example in the
Bible of a person who never let
unfavorable circumstances rule.
His name was Daniel. Daniel could
have given up every time he was
tested, but he chose to continue
serving God no matter what.
Daniel didn’t let his circumstances
rule him, but he became ruler over
his circumstances.
We can have the same victory
over our unfavorable circumstances today only if we continue
praising God through those trials
and don’t allow them to rule over
us. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says,
“Give thanks in all circumstances;
for this is God’s will for you in
Christ Jesus.”

Blackfoot Rodeo to showcase new facility
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Siksika’s Agricultural Society is gearing up to welcome
cowboys and cowgirls from all over North America to compete in the Siksika Blackfoot Rodeo which will showcase
the brand new indoor rodeo arena over the course of the
four days.
For many of the riders, it will be a chance to compete for
a spot in the championship event in Las Vegas in the fall.
“First Nations contestants can come and qualify for the
finals in Las Vegas in November,” said Jack Royal, board

member with the Siksika Agricultural Society.
“What we’re expecting is professional Indian
cowboys from all over Canada and the USA to
come on the Friday and Saturday and compete in
the tour rodeo.”
The rodeo will include all the major events
such as bareback, breakaway roping, steer wrestling, mutton busting, team roping, steer riding,
bull riding, wild horse races, tie down roping,
ladies barrels, junior barrels and pole bending.
Competitors from the Indian National Finals
Rodeo (INFRT) and the Siksika Rodeo Cowboys
Association (SRCA) will get to participate in a
special rodeo the day before the festivities begin at the rodeo grounds and the Siksika Agra
Centre.
“We’re having a grand opening rodeo in the
new rodeo arena on the Friday,” said Royal.
One of the major reasons that the Siksika Agricultural Society wanted to build this state-of-theart facility was to help the youth and adults in the

riding community and to bring back the horse
culture that the area is known for.
“There’s a lot of young people that want to do
some riding,” said Royal.
“Some have livestock, horses, some just want
to get into it and don’t have anything. They don’t
know where to go and they need some encouragement and somewhere they can hone their
skills.”
The focus will be on the therapeutic aspect of
riding, by assisting youths and adults that need to
deal with issues they may be trying to overcome.
“We’re open to equine therapy,” said Royal.
“Where we actually work with youths who acquire therapeutic treatment on some of the issues
that they’re dealing with in their lives. It’s not
only working with the youths, but also adults in
having various agricultural functions.”
The Summer Series rodeo will take place from
Aug. 6-9 at the Siksika rodeo ground that is just
south of Gleichen.

Johnson hopes to medal
at Parapan Am Games
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Cerebral palsy and a stroke at age 11 aren’t holding
40-year-old Cory Johnson back; who is living the dream by
participating in the Parapan Am Games next weekend.
It took Johnson six years to get to an international competition and his hard work has finally paid off.
“To go in, it’s a real opportunity to fulfill that want to play
for Team Canada,” said Johnson.
He will be participating in the Football 7-a-side as a goalkeeper, which is the type of soccer for players with cerebral
palsy and other neurological disorders.
Johnson set six Canadian records in the three years that

Mortgage Matters by Strathmores Mortgage Specialist
With all that is going on in the world today the Bank of Canada has lowered its prime lending
rate several times consecuitively. What does this mean for the citizens of Strathmore? Well
now is a great time to buy a new home. When negotiating the purchase price of your new
home people don’t often think about what the real cost of the home is because most people
are so focused on the purchase price they forget about the price to finance. First time home
buyers – the time is now – don’t wait. In todays low interest market the overall price of the
home is effectively reduced by the interest rate itself. Call me today and get preapproved. I will
let you know how much you can afford so that you can go out house hunting
Today is also a great day to refinance your existing home. Even with a
prepayment penalty you can save thousands of dollars off of your mortgage
by refinancing in todays super low interest rate market. Lock in now for
new lower rate and save money. Call me today you’ll be glad you did

he competed in competitive Track and
Field, but felt that was the end of the
road for a Paralympic sport, which is
when soccer came into play.
“Soccer Canada came along and the
head coach, Drew Ferguson, asked me
if I would be interested in training to
be a goalkeeper,” said Johnson.
“I hadn’t played soccer since I was
probably 14. I’ve been training for the
last three years two to four times a
week and really focusing.”
His teammates have taken similar
paths to making the team and Johnson, who knows them all, thinks it’s a
privilege to play with all of them.
“It really is a true honour to be
named to this team with 13 other phenomenal people and we all play for
each other,” said Johnson.
“We’re all going into the [Parapan
Am] Games with the goal of that gold
medal and right now we’re ranked
10th in the world.”
Johnson said wearing the Canadian
jersey proudly on their chest will provide inspiration needed to succeed in
the games.
If Canada were to medal or place in
the top eight at the games they will
qualify for the Paralympics in Brazil
next year.
The games go from Aug. 8-15 in Toronto.

Rosebud Lions host
family-friendly car rally
LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor

Rosebud Lions will host a car rally for
friends and family members of all ages,
Saturday, Aug. 8.
Peter Lauridsen of the Rosebud Lions
said everyone – including those who
live outside Rosebud – is welcome. The
Lions’ traditional summertime fundraiser has usually been a golf tournament,
targeted primarily to adults. This year,
he said, they wanted to include people
of all ages, so they decided to host a
car rally.
“We’re trying to tailor it to families
and hoping it will be fun for younger
participants as well as the adults,” he
said.
The day of the car rally begins at 11
a.m. with brunch at Rosebud Memorial Hall. Around 1 p.m., organizers will
begin sending cars out on the three to
four-hour drive through local scenic
sites.
“We’ll hand out instructions to each
participating vehicle and what they
have to do is follow the instructions

which give you the route of the rally.
Along the way there’s questions or little
activities, things you have to do to get
points,” Lauridsen said.
A steak supper, prepared by former Rosebud chef Pat Murphy, will be
served at 6 p.m., followed by live and
silent auctions. Auction items include a
Calgary Stampeders jersey autographed
by Drew Tate, and a Rosebud Getaway
Package with theatre tickets and an
overnight Rosebud stay. Lauridsen said
local artists and businesses have always
been generous in donating small and
large items to Rosebud Lions fundraisers.
The Rosebud Lions will direct the
funds raised to local community projects. In the past, they’ve helped establish and build the Rosebud museum,
raise the fire hall, and install an elevator
in the community hall.
Tickets are $100 per car, which includes two free supper tickets. Supper
tickets alone are $25. Children under 8
eat free. Contact Peter (403-334-2378)
or Pat (403-820-4251) or any Rosebud
Lions member for tickets.

- July 22, 2015

It is with great sadness that we announce the
passing of our dear Mom, grandmother and
great grandmother, Eileen Drummond on July
22, 2015 at Sagewood AgeCare Center. Eileen
was born in Foremost, Alberta on February 23,
1924. She was the fourth of five children born
to George and Mary Adelaide Millar. Her siblings
were Agnes, Helen, Bruce and Grace. She was especially close to Grace as they were 14 months
apart. The family lived on a farm in the Vauxhall
District and the Millar family attended both elementary and high school there. Eileen came to
Strathmore to visit her sister and brother-in-law,
Grace and Girvin Laycraft and decided to stay and
work in the area for a while. She worked for the
Royal Bank for 6 years and attended the young
people’s group at the United Church where she
met Dave Drummond. Dave and Eileen were married at the Strathmore United Church on April 14,
1955. They had four children. She is survived by:
daughter Heather, her husband Andrew, their children Courtney and Craig Gibson, great grandson
Kieran, Stephanie and David, daughter Laura and
her husband Don, Tyler and Bonnie, Brandi and
Andrew Hayman, great grandson David, Drew and
his fiancée Hannah, son Russ and his wife Carol
Ann, their children Kelsey and Cameron, son Neil,
and his wife Julie, Jenn and great granddaughter
Hailee, Leigh, Shane and great grandson Tyson,
Austin and Madison. We would like to thank the
staff at Sagewood Strathmore for the loving care
extended to Eileen. Services were held at Strathmore United Church on July 27, 2015 at 11:00.

of Billie’s illness and after his passing. Thank you for
all the calls, texts, prayers, cards and condolences.
Thank you for all the food and flowers brought to us

easier. The donations were very generous and
there is far too many people to name but once again
we would like to thank you from the bottom of our
hearts for your kindness and generosity. And finally
a special thanks to those who gave up much of
their own time to organize fundraising and day to
