Kinsmen Park was the place to be on July 1 as Strathmore celebrated Canada Day with style. The park was filled with people, with
many citing it as the best turnout in a long time. Left photo: Liam
Flaws, 4, enjoyed the petting zoo, happily chasing after the goats,
sheep and pigs. Top right photo: Nitika Healy, 4, participated in
the relay race hosted by Hope Community Covenant Church. Bottom right photo: Hope Bridges Society had a station set up where
people could step in paint and then walk along a sheet of paper,
leaving their mark. See Page 3 for more photos of the event.

Wheatland Elementary
School held their end

Family first aid day
The Global Legacy Foundation offered a free family
first aid course on Saturday, June 28 at their training
site in Strathmore. The course was taught by Stefan
Popoff (r) and ran from 8-4:30 p.m. Popoff has 10
years professional experience as an outdoor recreation guide in the mountains. Cassie Greig (l), who is
a gymnastics coach for the Strathmore Silhouettes
and teaches children from 6-12, thought the course
was an invaluable opportunity to get the rescue
knowledge she needs.

said Hubble.
The group looked at the
Muirfield development and
said the wastewater there
could be treated by their
plant and supplement the
needs of Cattleland feedlot
Bio Cluster plant. Similarly
the new housing projects in
Rosebud could utilize such a
system and at the same time
supply nutrients for a Rosebud greenhouse project; and
possibly future agriculture,
or industrial uses could be
developed around Gleichen
and the Wheatland Indus-

trial complex.
The impediment of cost,
delays in Alberta regulation
processes for the smaller
plants, the ability to deal
with population growth and
integration into existing infrastructure were brought
up as problems to be addressed. The group said partnerships could be formed to
overcome some of the barriers and they were meeting
with other municipalities
who were interested in the
systems application for agricultural purposes.

Man turns himself in

On June 28, just before 11
p.m. a pedestrian was hit by
a truck travelling east bound
on Range Rd 252A.
The driver of the truck, a
37-year-old male, is said to
have struck the pedestrian,
21, and then abruptly spun
around and fled the scene
going into the north ditch
between the Range Road
and Hwy #1, which runs
parallel to it. In the rush to
leave the scene, the vehicle
also hit a power pole on the
driver’s side, leaving behind
broken parts by the pole.
The driver then travelled
eastbound in the ditch before returning to the road-

way. Witnesses described the
vehicle as a white, four-door
truck with a drilling company name and logo on the
door.
The victim was sent to
Foothills Hospital in Calgary with serious injuries on
Saturday night, but was released on Sunday.
At approximately 10 a.m.
on June 29, the male driver, who is from Strathmore,
turned himself in to the
Strathmore RCMP detachment. Charges of dangerous
driving and leaving the scene
of an accident are pending.
The vehicle has been
seized for evidence purposes. The name of the 37-yearold male has not been released.

Capsule Comments
As we get older, our bodies break down alcohol
more slowly. If you combine this with the fact
that body water content also goes down, then a set
amount of alcohol affects an older person much
more than a younger one. Seniors must be very
careful of the amount of alcohol they consume
because it does interact with many drugs and can
make some health conditions like diabetes worse.

Students at Wheatland Elementary pose for a photo at the tractor safety station on June 24. The students receive tips on how to be safe with hazardous
water during the Ag for Life Safety Day program.

Ag for Life Safety Day program
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Awareness is important to teach to
the youth so they know how to handle a hazard when one is encountered
upon by a young child. The Ag for Life
organization was on hand at Wheatland Elementary on June 24 to team
up with Progressive Agriculture Safety
to promote farming safety to educate
students in Grades 4-6. The company
could not emphasize enough, not only
to the students but to rural farming
families the importance of how to prevent fatal accidents.
Luree Williamson could not agree
more to educate the kids at a young
age about preventing themselves from
getting seriously injured. The crucial
message is “reiterating safety messaging and how important it is for children
to take a look, stop and access the situation and keep themselves safe,” said
Williamson.
The local organizations are what
makes the programs run efficiently and
make it an enjoyable experience for the
children.
“Including local businesses, para-

medics, first responders, Agri services,
it is very important for these organizations to be involved and safety is a top
priority for them,” said Williamson.
Gayle Sell, who is one of the event
organizers, is really thrilled having
these Agriculture awareness days for
the youth.
“This is a program that Progressive
Agriculture has been doing for over 20
years and they have a real burden for
farm and ranch safety,” said Sell.
The fatality rate for youth across Canada is high as in the last 20 years there
have been 2,000 injuries and 17 percent
are children-related.
“Our goal is to continue to keep the
children safe, to decrease the injuries
and fatalities across the country and 90
per cent of them are males so hopefully
the gals will keep the males safe,” said
Sell.
On teaching the kids, Sell firmly believes that “with the children it is helping them at an early age like this to understand what it is like to be without an
arm or a leg, a finger even so that the
injuries that happen are not necessarily a knock on the head, which could
cause an injury for life.”

Grade 5 Wheatland teacher Donna
Carlson is extremely enthused about
the having this event at their school,
as it can be a essential educational tool
outside of the classroom.
“It is extremely well organized, a lot
of planning has gone into this and the
student are getting a ton of information,” said Carlson.
“If they can take back five or 10
things and put it to their lives the next
few months and stay safe during the
summer it will be worth it.”
Emma Van Bussel could not think of
anything better to do on a sunny day
and be out of the classroom, as she was
ecstatic about being in the safety fair.
“I did not know how important it
was to be safe around some particular
things like the sun as you can get cats
eye from that,” said Van Bussel. Many
students were having fun including Van
Bussel. When asked about it being better then being in the classroom, “much
better, heck yeah, it is awesome!”
As for her favorite station, “we’re going to do one that is really good like
you have to walk in a straight line with
crazy vision and I am looking forward
to that.”

When you go for your annual physical, be sure to
ask for one of those occult blood test kits. These
kits will test for blood in the stools and is part of
the screening for colon cancer, the second most
common cause of cancer deaths in Canada.
Many people take drugs that reduce the amount
of stomach acid. Many people also take calcium
supplements. Calcium is better absorbed in an
acidic environment. Calcium carbonate is one of
these. However, if your stomach acid is reduced,
try calcium citrate for better absorption.
By the way, this same consideration should be
given to those who take vitamin B12 orally. This
vitamin also needs stomach acid to absorb well. If
you do take stomach acid-suppressing drugs, you
may be better off with B12 injections.
There is a lot of science that does into your
medications. Knowing when to take the drug,
the drug interactions, the side effects and desired
outcomes….that’s our job to pass that information
on to you. Use our pharmacy. Use our knowledge.

Adventure camps accepting participants
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Strathmore Kids and Next are accepting registration into
the Adventure Camps being held over the summer. The camps
are for kids ages six to 12-years-old and are scheduled to begin on July 7.
The first week is one all kids will love, it’s Adventureland:
Magical Worlds and will be a Harry Potter theme.
“You’re going to be seeing the kids playing Quidditch,
we’re going to be doing potions and spells, we’re going to be
doing a lot of food crafts, we’re going to be doing Hogwarts
acceptance letters, we’re going to be watching the first movie,
and a lot of the things we do on a daily basis are going to be
themed directly towards Harry Potter,” said Courtney Beekman, camp coordinator.
There will also be a triwizard cup where the teams can
compete for prizes.
Week two is Amazing Race: Around the World, July 14-18.
Beekman said she and her fellow camp coordinators have
picked five different countries and each day will do things to
feature that country. There will be a different challenge, either
a puzzle or a dance, the kids have to learn, or a game to learn
from that country.
There will be roadblocks just like in the TV show that the
kids have to do or they won’t be able to move on with their
team. One will be becoming a human Connect 4 game. The
kids will also learn some things about the countries they ‘visit,’ too.
Week three is Artful Antics July 21-25.
“That is one of the most exciting ones I am going to say.
We’re going to use anything from our hands all the way up to
plungers to paint and make art,” said Beekman
“We will be filling water balloons with paint and throwing
them at each other in paint suits. We will be using fly swatters, dinosaurs, trucks, cars, anything we can get our hands
on that you can put paint onto a canvas we’re going to use.”
The kids and staff will be making goo, and slime and things
the kids can take home with them.
Brazilian Carnival is week four, July 28-Aug. 1. The kids will
be learning about the rainforest, rainforest animals and about
the carnival. The kids will be making masks, learning about

the music and the culture.
Beekman is an EMR and for week five, Survivor Outback is Aug. 11-15. She will be teaching
the kids basic skills and how to help someone if
they are hurt. The kids will be making basic first
aid kits to take home and learning how to read
a compass, about different plants in the prairies,
which ones are okay to eat and touch and which
aren’t. There will be a challenge where the kids
have to figure out how to find and help someone
who has been ‘injured.’ Beekman said the kids will
also learn about Australia, the aboriginals there,
things they used to do in terms of old medical supplies they would have used.
Aug. 18-22 is when the Best of the Best week
will take place.
“What that is right now is a blank page, because
what happens is we’re going to go through our
first five weeks of summer camps and the kids are
going to pick their absolute favourite things they
did and every week we’re just going to keep adding it into that planning,” said Beekman.
The final week, Aug. 25-29, is called Imaginarium: What will you Think of Next?
Beekman and fellow staff have been going to the
recycling centre and to craft stores to collect things

for the kids to create different projects with. The
kids will be given the theme, to create the latest
invention and they will then have to make it, pitch
their idea to the staff, and have to be able to show
the invention. It doesn’t have to be working but it
does have to be there. The idea is that it will be
sort of a Dragons Den style for the kids.
Beekman said she and the staff are hoping to
plan one field trip, not sure which week exactly
but it will be to Bassano outdoor pool at either
the end of July or beginning of August. The cost
is $170 per week and there is the option of before
and after care at an additional cost. The regular
hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.
Mondays will be at the Four Sisters Farm or
the NEXT building, doing themed activities and
themed crafts. Tuesdays there is usually a trip to
the splash park, Wednesdays are the same as Mondays in terms of activities, and Thursdays will be
at the farm, with a hot lunch provided. On Fridays
the group will be swimming in the afternoon.

Project Hope
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Often times Hope Bridges Society (HB) and
Project Hope (PH) are confused as being the same
thing. While they were both started in part by
Sheila Konschuh, the two have different mandates,
goals and demographics.
We asked both organizations a couple of questions to help clear things up.
What does your organization do?
PH- answered by chair Corrine Ball:
Project Hope fundraises in our community to
provide music, art and adapted phys. ed therapy
to children with special needs in the Golden Hills
School Division.
HB- answered by coordinator Wanda Reinholdt:
Hope Bridges is a community-based, not-forprofit organization that works to eliminate segregation through the universal language of art.
We offer arts-based classes and workshops for all
adults that help participants express themselves
and connect with others. At the heart of our organization is the knowledge that everyone belongs
and everyone is welcome.
Who do you help/what’s your focus?
PH- Children ages 3-20 years with severe learning needs including communication, cognitive,
self-help, social-emotional and/or behavioral difficulties.
HB- All adults no matter their ability, age, or
background.
What is your mission statement?
PH- We believe that meaningful learning is
achieved through partnership between family,
school and community. We believe in the value of
every child and in the importance of equal opportunities for meaningful learning.
HB- Vision (Why) - Hope Bridges Society uses
creative expression to foster meaningful relationships and change perception of difference, thereby
eliminating segregation. Rooted in the knowledge
that everyone belongs, we model inclusion and
valued citizenship in everything we do.
Mission (How) - Incorporating a spirit of hospitality and a standard of excellence, Hope Bridges
will facilitate the connection of community mem-

bers through inclusive arts activities where there is
no right or wrong, and where we are all uniquely
valued. Hope Bridges will work to build stronger
community using arts programming that promotes
connection and well-being through participation
and inclusion.
What are your goals?
PH- Our goal is to help these children develop
communication and life skills through group music, art and adapted phys. ed therapies.
HB- Short Term: The facilitation of meaningful
connections between more participants that prevents further isolation and the accompanied ripple
effect that isolation brings. Diverse array of workshop and event opportunities.
Intermediate: To see an increase of individuals giving testimony (spoken and written) of how
their lives have been strengthened through the
relationships and experiences at Hope Bridges.
To see an increase in the number of partnerships
with businesses and organizations. See an increase
of collaborations and community art experiences
with multi-purpose goals.
Long Term: Higher workshop participation that
means greater opportunity for connection in community. Welcoming people of even more diverse
needs because we are increasing our profile and
our support foundation through this project. We
would become a resource for other communities
about valued citizenship and universal effectiveness of the arts.
What is your role in the community?
PH- Our role in the community is to help the
kids become better prepared to integrate into the
community once they are finished high school. The
therapies teach them how to handle and cope with
real life situations through art, music and phys. ed.
Teaching them things like coping skills and helping them to gain confidence.
HB- To provide to all adults a place to belong.
To facilitate meaningful community events/ workshops using the arts that celebrate and encourage
connection and artistic expression. To be a safe
and accessible place for any adult to connect, explore and create. To advocate for any adult who
is unable to advocate for themselves. To support
community growth and community connections.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Keep the party inside please
To the Editor
Hello Strathmorians/Strathmorites … summer is here, yeah!
Backyard BBQ’s are great. Yeah! However, please remember that
‘shutdown’ outside time is 11 p.m., not 1:30 a.m. as was the case
in my neighbourhood last weekend.
Also remember that voices and music carry much further and
louder than in daylight (don’t know why). I’m not saying don’t
have a good time, but take it inside at 11 p.m. please or I might
be forced to call the RCMP and they will shut it down.
Thanking everyone in advance. Have a great summer.

In the good ole summertime
PAT FULE
Fule for Thought
This past winter was a long one. It snowed forever,
and the season itself never seemed to want to end.
Once again, we had a wet spring where we were
blasted with wind, rain, and cool weather. It’s actually gotten many of us down, as the sun doesn’t
seem to want to come out much, or stay a long time.
I actually saw a very cool poster showing a biker
riding his motorbike on a snowy road. The caption
was done like a “break-up letter.”
It read: “Dear Winter, I’m breaking up with you. I
think it’s time I started seeing other seasons. P.S. Summer is way hotter than you.”
That’s how I feel about winter. Our seasons are
weird here. We have long, snowy winters with huge
winds and drifting. Following this “fun” season, we
have cold, wet, springs that seem to give the odd
(hint) day of warmth, just to tease us. Our best summer weather seems to hit in late August, and carry
on into October! How do you plan for summer activities in the fall?!
It’s no wonder so many Strathmore and county residents head south, even in our actual summer. Summer is like a buddy who’s unreliable. You count on
him to help you out, but he doesn’t show up when
you need him the most. Then if he does show up,
he doesn’t stay half as long as you needed him, then
he dusts off without telling you when he’ll be back!
It’s so frustrating! One summer, we actually went to
Vegas for a week. Who goes to Vegas in the summer? The Fules do, and we went only because Brennen had an Alberta Basketball tournament down
there. We were not going to let a 14-year-old kid get
to Vegas before us! Anyway, coming from the cold,
grey summer departure day of Strathmore to the
landing site at Vegas was a huge shock. When we
left, it was a scorching 13 degrees! We landed into
what I felt was a blast oven … 47 degrees. Don’t get
me wrong, I’ve just complained about our cold winters and springs, and our slow summer starts. However, this change was a major shock! Any breeze we
got was like having a blast from a blow dryer … it
literally took away your breath. When we walked
along “The Strip,” I was thankful for the many pa-

tios that had “spray misters” to spray out onto the
sidewalk. I even leaned in often to get as much mist
as possible. Once I did feel guilty for leaning in on
a guy’s meal … sorry about your salad, buddy, but
I was desperate!
Summer in Strathmore is also a time of gardening.
We have a limited time for vegetable gardens, flowerbeds, and lawns. I’ve wondered lately about the
plant that seems to thrive in our climate, and how
our philosophy toward it has changed. Of course,
I’m speaking about dandelions. There was a time
when it was good and proper to kill these weeds
with as much gusto and chemicals as we could muster! Now, however, these cute, yellow “flowers” are
not seen as weeds anymore, and towns and counties don’t attack them as much anymore. I get that
we don’t want to pollute the ground water, hurt
bees or birds with chemicals, but it really is hard
for me to see dandelions as cute. To me, they’re still
a spreading yellow weed that must be eradicated!
I hate dandelions, I hate their colour, and the way
they change into having puffy balls of seeds that
spread all over! However, I do recall being a kid
and making wishes when we blew on the ball of
thistle seeds, sending them flying off to (probably)
spread to our neighbours’ lawns! Girls used to take
the stems and make bracelets, and kids used to rub
them on each other to see if they loved somebody,
or butter, or some other strange old time belief. I
have a colleague on council, Denise, who told me
that I would change my thoughts on dandelions as
soon as a grandchild came up to me with a bouquet
of them. I’d really like to believe that, but I have a
hard time shaking the whole idea that they’re disgusting weeds!
Maybe it’s a good thing we are changing our views
on dandelions. I have been told they’re great in salads, are a natural laxative (yea!), and even make
for great wine. Heck, if they do make good wine,
that’s one reason alone to treat them with respect! I
found a quote about dandelions that reads: “When
you look at a field of dandelions, you can either see
a hundred weeds, or a hundred wishes.”
I get it, but I think I’d still wish for better summers,
and less dandelions!

headed out on the Lethbridge
Tour on Saturday, June 14 at 8
a.m. from Kinsmen Lake. There
might have only been the three
of us, and it rained on us all day,
but not enough to dampen our
spirits.
Our first stop landed us in
Vulcan because I have never
been there before. We went to
the visitor centre and found out
it was Spock Days. We didn’t
have time to take in the parade,
however we did find out they
make Spock Beer and Grog Ale
very special in Vulcan.
Our next stop took us to the
Japanese Gardens where we

took in the sites. We shared the
park with a mother duck and
her three ducklings, and rang
the bell for peace. We learned
about origami – 1,000 Cranes
story of Peace, and when they
had their Traditional Tea Ceremonies on Sundays.
Next we went to visit a hundred year old poplar tree (the
Fairmont Poplar) and still
couldn’t get all of it in the photo. It was something to see. Our
last two stops were a visit to two
Greenhouses – GreenHaven,
and Country Blooms. To top off
the end of our trip we went to
Tim Horton’s that was overrun
with gophers, then back home
to Strathmore where the sun
was shining. What a welcome
home! Enjoy your gardening.

Town prepared for permit appeal Beware the Zebra, beware the Quagga

What’s
Happening

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Administration for the Town of
Strathmore is anticipating an appeal
to a development permit application
being made for a dog daycare, grooming and training facility. The new
business would be located in the Canal Gardens, which consists of mixed
zoning and is run condominium style,
with several holders.
Half of the owners in the area appear to be okay with the proposed
new business, while it seems as
though the rest are not.
Staff recommended that the application be approved as the applicant has
made a reasonable effort to deal with
some of the issues raised by some of
the co-owners of the property. Some
of the concerns raised include the facility being noticeable from the road,
about barking, and about waste disposal of fecal matter.
The applicant is proposing at the
rear of the building an 8-foot high
chain link fence. On the outside of
that fence would be six foot board
so that fence is opaque, meaning the
dogs won’t be able to see people enter
the site, which should help eliminate
some of the barking. The enclosure
itself is 7.5 metres by 30 metres, half
gravel, half grass, and the applicant
uses an enzyme-based cleaner to deal
with smell and any residual effects of
the waste.
“Our review of the application indicates that given the location it seems
to be reasonable approach to managing the issue,” said Werner Fischer,
with planning and development for
the town.
The owner, who was in attendance
of the June 18 council meeting, said
she will be grooming and running a
doggie daycare, and plans on about
22 dogs in the daycare. It will be a
mix of little and big dogs, with the
two kept in separate rooms. The dogs
will be cycled inside and outside, in
a series of play, rest, feed, and more
play.

Council approved the development
permit.
CONCEPT DESIGN NEEDED
Pat Maloney has done contract
planning and development work with
the town for a number of months. Her
contract is up at the end of August
and she, along with town administration, has identified a few projects that
should go forward in the near future.
One of those is creating a concept
plan for the annexed land to help
give an idea of what the town would
like to see the land used for.
“This allows each individual landowner to come in, make an application, knowing full well what piece of
the puzzle they are and where they fit
in,” said Maloney.
The dollar amount charged for the
plan would be charged back to the
developers on a per acre basis, which
would allow the town to recoup the
costs over time. The plan could be
used by future developers as a guide,
and could be used by the town in
their ongoing water and stormwater
strategy.
Councillor Bob Sobol moved for
council to approve the development
of a basic concept plan for west
Strathmore and that it be returned
to council in regards to appropriate
advice for contracting in one months
time.
GATHERING HOSPITAL INFO
Councillor Bob Sobol mentioned
his disappointment about the meeting with Minister Drysdale on June
11, and asked administration to try
and put together a fact sheet on the
history of what has happened at the
hospital, everything from promises to
any potential improvements that have
been proposed since the hospital was
built in the ‘80s.
Sobol said he has heard about
things that were supposed to happen
in 1997, and then there were talks
again in 2006 and still nothing has
happened.
Council was in favour of Sobol’s request and motion, agreeing with the
importance.

There is something out there waiting
… waiting to let its microscopic larvae creep onto your boots, onto your
swimming suits, into your fishing cooler and they are hiding in the hidden
corners of your boat. It eats plankton;
it eats toxic chemicals and sucks the
nutrients out of its prey or smothers
them to death. Whole zones of waterways have been polluted by their kind;
they destroy habitats in their wake and
clog up sewer and water pipes. They
are moving north and west towards Alberta.
It is not the monster from the latest
summer horror flick; it is the reality of
the invasive species zebra and quagga
mussels.
Jay White an Alberta professional biologist from Aquality Consulting Services came to Wheatland County council on June 17, to advise the county of
the essential actions needed to keep
our waterways clear of invasive species.
“This is one of the biggest threats
facing fresh water economy and ecology,” said White.
He said the infestation of these mussels causes over $75 million in damages
to infrastructure each year. They were
originally found in the Great Lakes;
where the species was brought to Canada from continents overseas, hitchhiking in bilge water and on hulls of ships.
It has made its way down waterways
into the eastern United States (U.S.)
and has now been spotted in lakes
in the western U.S. and California regions. Recently, they have been found
in Lake Winnipeg, and the Energy, Resources and Sustainable Development
officials, along with the federal fisheries department, want to see the spread
contained. Alberta, Saskatchewan and
British Columbia are currently clear of
the threat, but officials want to stop the
spread.
Snowbirds are inadvertently carrying them back on boats purchased in
the U.S., or through cross-border recreational activity. Border patrols have

been set up to pull vehicles over and
conduct inspections, with a requirement the vessels be cleaned and reinspected before entering Canada.
Twelve boats were detained last year
and one, so far this year, had a confirmed infestation.
The battle begins by cleaning and
scrubbing watercraft, trailers and gear
away from storm drains, ditches or
waterways. Drain all the water from
bait pails, ballasts, coolers and internal compartments before you leave
the original water source. Wipe down
and dry out the watercraft and gear between trips. Soak felt waders, gear and
clothing used in foreign water sources,
in hot water for 40 minutes and use
a two percent bleach solution to clean
non-absorbent surfaces. Let everything
dry for at least two days, before you
reuse it in water again.
White said one good indicator to determine if a mussel-like structure is one
of these species is to see if it sticks on
any surface …if it does; it is most likely
a zebra or quagga mussel. The quagga is slightly larger than the smaller
striped zebra cousin. These mussels are
not edible, have no predators except
the round gobi fish, which is also an invasive species. There is no known way
to kill the mussels, short of steaming
all surfaces with 140 degree Fahrenheit
heated water, letting the surfaces dry
and leaving the boat out of the water
for more than 30 days, as they can survive on land for that amount of time.
In a program similar to the rat-free
Alberta program, officials are asking
everyone to be on the lookout for signs
of possible contamination. A hot line
has been set up so reports can be given
24/7 to confirm sightings and eradicate
the threat of their spread into Western
Canada. Call 1-855-336-2628 if you suspect contamination and officials will
investigate.
There are other invasive species; just
a few examples are the Eurasian milfoil, flowering rush and rusty crayfish.

programs to protect our native fish and
ecosystems see www.esrd.alberta.ca.

S’more Paths from time to time. I caught up with
her at Strathmore High School, where she is a career advisor, and asked her the following questions:

I found it to be very smooth and easy to use.
PP: How did Finn enjoy your walk, and did you

KM: Finn is 19 months old and still in a stroller.
He loves seeing all the trees and wildlife. We stop
at the east side park along Kinsmen Circle where
Finn loves the slides.
PP: Did you use the Save Your Path feature?
KM: Yes, I have saved Finn’s pathways and running paths for myself. It is nice that you can reuse

Saying farewell to a familiar face
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

After 43 years a familiar face in the office of
Westmount School is leaving. Pat Irish began
her career at the school just one month after it
opened its doors, and this year she has decided it
is time to retire.
“Because it is time and it felt right,” said Irish
about her decision.
“For me retirement is just to have the time to do
what I want to do.”
She is confident she will be leaving the school
in very capable hands and already has plans to
come back and help work on backdrops for the
annual play and visit from time-to-time.
“The school has been a part of my life for more
than (half) the time I have been on this planet
so far. I will miss the people and I will miss the
school because we have been through a lot this
school and I together,” said Irish.
Technology is catching up, said Irish, and while
she isn’t too bad with it, she thinks the office
needs to be taken further into the technological
age to keep up with the demands as they keep
changing.
Principal Wayne Funk said when you think
back to when Irish first started at the school she
was a stenographer, a letter writer and an attendance taker. Now she manages budgets, high-end
computer systems.

“Her job has changed dramatically in the 43
years and she has managed to stay on top of everything as she’s managed to go through,” said
Funk.
Often there are parents who bring their kids
into the school and say that Irish was there when
they were students. There is nothing about the
history of the school that she doesn’t know.
“We’re going to miss that, that history, that tie
to the start of the school is gone,” said Funk.
“She’s just a recognized part of the school, it’s
going to be hard to imagine she’s gone” said Associate Principal Dana Graff.
On May 30 there was an assembly and the students had a chance to say farewell. The kids put
together a DVD with recommendations on things
Irish should do with her retirement, and the staff
even lip-synced a song, which was shown at the
assembly. On June 13 former and current employees gathered to get together to say their own farewell to Irish.
“I am so happy for her that she can do it, and
she is so excited looking forward to it. I wish her
the best of luck, and we will miss her,” said Karen
Wilkie, who has worked in the office with Irish
over the past 10 years.
Irish isn’t sure what to attribute to her dedication at the school for so long. She said it just happened, one day she turned around and it was 43
years later.
“We are blessed with wonderful parents in

this school and we always have been, so that’s wonderful.
We have kind of gone from the only elementary school in
Strathmore, now we share which is wonderful because the
population has grown so much but we still retain our country roots which is nice,” said Irish.
“I will have my first full summer in 43 years, because I always have to come back like five days before everyone else,
so I am looking forward to my first full summer.”

Becoming
future leaders
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

A recognition ceremony was held
on June 20 at Wheatland Elementary
for the students to recognize global
and community organizations for their
combined efforts to help with less fortunate kids in the Dominican Republic.
A project that was led by Joy Muenchrath’s Grade 3 students contributed
by raising $670 between recycling pop
cans and freezie sales, picking up 6,348
pieces of garbage and a large amount
of donated clothes and school supplies.
The kids in the Dominican Republic will receive “school supplies, we
bought a goat for a family through
Free-the-Children and they will also
get part of the $670,” said Muenchrath.
Programs such as these show that
the students can be leaders of their
schools, and if they put their minds to
it, they will succeed.
“In Social Studies, we do Global Citi-

zenship so it hits both (sides) and we
are leaders of our school and we can
make a difference,” said Muenchrath.
The project was designed to be student-led and provide them with the
opportunity to create a name for their
organization and make a portfolio.
“The students made brochures, letterheads and all have business cards,
so it’s totally student directed,” said
Muenchrath.
The students reached out to community organizations where they could

donate. The associations that the Grade
3 worked with could not have been any
more fortunate. “We had a global (organization), which was Free-the-Children
and then our community which was
the Wish Foundation and the Animal
Control Centre,” said Muenchrath.
Global Citizenship is in the curriculum every year and the students engage in the course with excitement.
This is the fourth year that the program has been held at Wheatland Elementary.

Calgary Co-op broke ground on their new home, located
east of the Ranch Market, on June 23. Mayor Michael Ell,
along with representatives from Co-op, the Town of Strathmore and Elan Construction participated in the ceremony.
“Let’s celebrate what’s to come for the Strathmore community,” said Ken Woo, chief executive officer with Calgary
Co-op in a press release.
“We’ve simply outgrown our current location and will use
this opportunity to develop a convenient shopping destination that includes not only an improved food store, but also
a new wine, spirits and beer location and a second gas bar
location.”
“As a town we know that Co-op needs to be able to grow
with our community. This new facility will allow them to do
so,” said Ell in a press release.

EAGALA a way to healing
SHARON MCLEAY
Times Contributor

Anyone who has spent some time
raising horses will tell you horses have
a sixth sense about people. It is this
sixth sense that comes into play when
equine-assisted psychotherapy meets
equine-assisted learning in the EAGALA training workshops and therapeutic work done in 42 countries worldwide.
Jody Buckle, a local EAGALA certified equine trainer, hosted a workshop
for those wanting to gain certification
at her Love, Laugh, Learn
Equine Assisted Learning
Centre located just south
of Strathmore on June 2628. EAGALA sent certified
Equine Mental Health Trainer Ulla Fredericksen and
Annie Tidmarsh, a certified
Equine Specialist from their
headquarters in Utah to facilitate the sessions.
Buckle said there was a
good group of mental health professionals and educational and horse
specialists signed up for the training.
Some of those with horse experience
had previous certifications in programs
such as the Parelli natural horsemanship training.
“We had covered a lot of material,
and we look up and the horses had
moved away from the people. They
were mirroring what we were feeling.
We as facilitators took the cue from the
horses that we were done,” said Fredericksen, about the dynamics between
horse and participants at the end of
their Friday session. “They (the horses)
survive in their environments by reading the energy of the environment, so
it is not unusual for them to read the
energy of the group and respond accordingly.”
It is these dynamics that allow therapists and clients to look at issues and
challenges in their own lives.
Tidmarsh said she knew fairly early
in her experience raising horses that
there was a significant connection.
“I suppose I thought about the psychotherapeutic use of working with
horses in the early 80’s when we were
working in special education. I took
my ponies to my daughter’s school
and the children just wanted to touch
the ponies and sniff the ponies,” said
Tidmarsh.
The process is not just a glorified
riding academy or petting zoo. Participants may touch and interact with the
horses in an arena setting, but there is
no riding involved. The sessions are
experiential and client based, so the

direction of the sessions comes not
from the trainer but the client. However, having trained facilitators on hand
helps the client clarify their experiences and reach solutions that lead to
personal growth and learning.
“Each session is very different. Our
goal is to teach principles of the model. The additional goal is to help each
individual to manage their own stuff
as it comes up. It frees up the process
to be all about the client and promote
self-awareness and self–management,”
said Frederiksen. “This work is appropriate for many populations, for veterans, children with autism,
victims of domestic abuse,
grief, family dynamics, behavioural problems and so
much more.”
In a 2013 EAGALA survey, over 13,143 people had
participated in the sessions
worldwide and over half of
the survey’s treatment population were children age
10-18, 38.1 per cent were
couples and all participants dealt with
a variety of issues.
Both trainers in this process are required to have significant qualifications
prior to their EAGALA certification and
they must abide by a code of ethics set
out by their professions and EAGALA
when working with clients. The Mental
Health trainers must have a collegelevel educational training and degree
in a mental health field, such as social
work, psychology, marriage and family
therapy, or others that include mental
health as its scope of practice. They are
required to stay within their scope of
practice and follow all laws and regulations regarding mental health practice.
The Equine qualifications are just as
extensive. They require 6,000 hours
hands-on work with horses, which
they equate to three years full-time
work. An additional 100 hours of continuing education in the horse ground
work experience, horse psychology
knowledge and reading horse body
language/nonverbal
communication
cues.
The certification is done over two
sessions and includes a professional development portfolio. Advanced
courses are also available.
Being certified gives adds a rewarding dimension for those with equine facilities. Those with horse management
skills and certification, but no horses
or facility - can still work together with
certified Mental Health therapists in
their area, at facilities such as Love,
Laugh Learn.
This model is not all hard work, it
also incorporates fun with the learning

and it is used by corporations looking
to improve team dynamics, and various social groups book weekends for
group development.

The second annual silent auction for
the Strathmore Montessori program
held at Chinook Credit Union wrapped
up on June 13.
“The auction was a great success, we
raised just over $2,000. We are so grateful to the Credit Union, all the generous
companies and individuals that donated the items for auction and of course
the community for their support,” said
Jennifer Ginter, Montessori secretary.
This September will mark the 10th
anniversary for the program, which is
held at Wheatland Elementary School.
The Kindergarten/Grade 1 and the
Grade 2/3 classroom have specially designed manipulative materials to invite
and engage students in learning activities.
A teacher who has been trained in
the Montessori philosophy, which allows students to learn at their own individual pace, guides the students. The
students learn by making discoveries
with the materials, cultivating concentration, motivation, and self-discipline
and create a love of learning.
The Strathmore Montessori Society is
parent run, and a charitable organization. Because it is an alternative program within the Golden Hills School
Division the program receives funding
for teacher salaries, but not for the materials or the Montessori teacher training. The program runs Monday to Friday and will be back in September.

The Alberta Rockies Gay Rodeo

at the Strathmore rodeo grounds.
Along with typical rodeo events
such as bull riding, calf roping and
barrel racing, participants also took
part in events you won’t see at most
rodeos like goat dressing and a wild
drag race. There was also a rodeo
school for new participants, food
vendors, shopping and live entertainment on-site.

Successful rodeo weekend for ARGRA
JUSTIN SEWARD

The 21st Annual Canadian Rockies International Rodeo
and Music Festival, hosted by the Alberta Rockies Gay Rodeo
Association (ARGRA), was a hit again this year, whether it
was through the live entertainment or the rodeo itself.
“Basically this year event-wise everything was pretty much
the same year-to-year, we have our rodeo and there are no
new events added,” said Drew Davidson, events co-ordinator
for the Gay Rodeo. “We have still the favorites like the camp
event such as wild drag, goat dressing as well as our regular
ones.”
The music event was a highlight for many that attended
the rodeo as many musicians this year really showcased their
talents which appealed to a lot of the crowd.
“Our music festival was really well received this year, we
had a lot of really good acts and our Tornado nightclub had

a large turnout which was good to see,” said Davidson.
Considering the rainy and colder weather, the rodeo still
had a great turnout with the conditions. “We had quite a
number of people through our gates. On some days we had
less seats in the stands but we had a busier music festival
and I think that was being able to sit away from the wind,”
said Davidson.
As for participants, “still fairly healthy, we did have a couple of unfortunate competitors that were turned away at the
border due to improper veterinary qualifications to get into
the country,” said Davidson.
“The Rodeo School that we offered on Friday ended up
being the largest number of students in both ARGRA history
and in the International Gay Rodeo Association’s history,”
said Davidson
The capacity was always good for not only the nightclub
but also overall numbers per day.He also noted that the
numbers were above last year’s totals.

Training to be cowboys
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Each year at the Canadian Rockies International Rodeo (CRIR), hosted by the
Alberta Rockies Gay Rodeo Association
(ARGRA), hosts a rodeo school prior to
the actual rodeo events. Anyone and everyone is welcome to take part in the
rodeo school.
For $25 per event you can learn a
number of activities like chute dogging,
steer deco, steer riding, calf roping on
foot and, new this year, goat dressing.
Shannon Rachynski from Calgary and
Gerald Laboucan from Edmonton heard
about the rodeo and decided to come
check things out as volunteers. They
were both easily convinced to try out

the rodeo school.
“I was only signed up for one when
I got here this morning ( June 27) ... it
was the calf roping, and now chute dogging and goat dressing is added,” said
Rachynski.
Laboucan participated in the steer
deco, calf roping, chute dogging and
goat dressing. He had originally been
on his way to Calgary for Color Me Rad
when a friend called and invited him to
the rodeo. It was something new and
fun, and he decided why not.
“I have been having a blast ever since,”
said Laboucan.
“It’s so much fun once you start doing it. I have had three separate people
say ‘oh, you’ve got the bug now.’ I’m totally going to be back next year and I’ll

probably take them all next year,” said
Rachynski.
Both agreed there was no negative
energy to be found, everyone was supportive and always clapping and cheering for each participant, no matter how
they did.
The instructor would give lots to
think about, teaching little bits of information, but they are also encouraging
people to participate because they want
you to join in the events of the actual
rodeo, said Rachynski. You’re learning
about paying attention to the flags and
the whistles but, Rachynski said, when
you’re standing there holding this steer
all you can think about is that you just
have to get to the line.
Laboucan said he was a little scared

with the chute dogging, and when
you’re looking down at the other people going and you panic a little looking
at the size of the animal and the horns.
“Then when you get in and you’re just
standing beside it and you get yourself
ready and as soon as you just mentally
yell Go!, everything else just is gone.
You are just purely in that moment, in
the adrenaline,” said Laboucan.
For the chute dogging there was a
woman giving advice to the female participants on how they could get their
calf down, and afterwards she would
give tips on what could be done differently next time for improvement.
“I learned after getting up off the dirt
that I apparently wasn’t running with
it (the steer), I wasn’t moving my legs
at all which would explain why it was
slow mo,” said Rachynski laughing.
“We came out of the gate good together and I remember thinking this was
good and then all of a sudden it was
like ‘oh my God’ he was running and I
was going down to the ground and that
was it, it was over.”
Both have no doubt in their minds
they will be back again next year for
another shot at the rodeo school, and
possibly enter in to some of the events.
“I think it is just fun that you can do
this and while you’re doing this they are
actually encouraging you to just sign up
and try the rodeo, try and compete. I
think that’s awesome,” said Rachynski.
“If you even have the inkling to do
it, just do it, just sign yourself up,” said
Laboucan.
The rodeo returns to Strathmore every Canada Day weekend.

The eighth annual Canada Day Lacrosse Tournament, which was played mainly at the Calgary Soccer Centre and other arenas across the city, was a
great success. Strathmore Minor Lacrosse co-hosted the longest-running box lacrosse tournament
in the world. There was total of 97 teams, which
included five Strathmore Venom teams, who were
thrilled to be the hosts of this massive tournament.
The Venom teams put on a strong performance on
the rink this weekend according to the Strathmore
lacrosse club’s president Todd Betterton.
”I was able to catch a few games and our players
did real well all things considered and there was a
lot of high level lacrosse,” said Betterton.
“It is a huge winning experience for us and I

want to give a shout out to all the volunteers who
really made this happen, we can not do this without them.”
If it were not for the tireless dedication of the
volunteers this weekend the tournament would
not have run as smoothly as it did.
”What they did this weekend will pay huge for
the club in the future years and we are going to
try and do it again next year as the host club,” said
Betterton.
As for any future changes to the tournament, “I
would not change anything, there is a couple small
logistical things we might change and this year every team was able to come through and play at the
Subway Soccer Centre.
”Next year they may have three new fields here
at the Subway Soccer Centre. There is chance that
we can host all the games here.”

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Strathmore Midget AAA Reds men’s baseball team is
getting prepared for the international stage as they are playing
in two tournaments. Both the tournaments are taking place
in Kenai and Anchorage, Ala. respectively between July 6-16.
The squad that formed in October has had many fundraisers
to cover the cost for the team to travel to these tournaments.
“We are a tournament team so we do not play in any leagues
in Alberta, so most of our tournaments are actually in Montana,” said coach Dale Anderson. The Reds travel to Libby,
Mont. a couple of times a year and do two or three tournaments in Alberta.
”We usually do the one feature trip every summer and this
summer we are going to two tournaments in Alaska and try
to get fundraising going as early as possible,” said Anderson.
The fundraising efforts included a New Year’s gathering in
Carbon to fundraise the money and they also had outside
sponsorship that graciously donated to cover the cost for the
trip.
Coach Anderson has not been with the team as much but
his brother has been with the team for a few years and said it
has been the same core group of guys.
“Zane (Anderson) has been coaching for five years and has
been doing it every summer and he coaches a fall ball team
and it is the same group of guys,” said Anderson.
Most of these players came from a small town and grew up
playing baseball in some capacity. Anderson has played ball
from a young age.
“I started back in tee ball here Strathmore and ever since I
could walk I started throwing a baseball. I was always pretty
decent at it and stuck with it and it took me a long way,” said
Anderson. He played every position on the diamond all the
way through. On how excited he is to be going to Alaska,
“It should be great, never actually been to Alaska personally

States from Tennessee, California, Vermont.”
When going to play university baseball south of the border
you always get top-notch talent and competition. Rylan Chin
got to experience that first-hand when he had the opportunity playing for a two different schools in the States. Being able
to play down there has been a highlight of his career so far.
“Played four years of college baseball at Douglas College
for two years and Campbellsville, Ky. for the other two years,”
said Chin.
Coming back out of college and jumping right into the Reds
lineup was quite the achievement in itself.
”Coming back here both first year out of college playing
for the provincial team, the Canada games with Dale is pretty
good to see everything come full circle,” said Chin.
The middle infielder commented on their trip, “Alaska is going be awesome and get to see another part of the world and
compare ourselves to other programs around North America.”
Coach Ryan Kennedy is optimistic about the team they have
and is really looking forward to see his teammates compete
with the ultra competitive opponents.
“I think it is great, you see different styles of coaching, playing, players and talent levels,” said Kennedy.
“It allows us to gauge our ability as a team and where these
guys may fit at the next level of the game.”
