Disaster struck at Joyland Theatre
this past weekend, during the midst of
the July 3 centennial celebrations.
A large section of the brick frewall
on the east side of the building col-
lapsed due to high winds. Originally
someone said they thought they might
have seen a twister, said Melissa Crisp-
in-Piche, whose parents own the the-
atre. She said now people are saying it
might have been a microburst, which
is a localized column of sinking air
that produces damaging winds at the
surface, similar to tornadoes, but are
distinguishable from a tornado.
“No one was hurt, which we’re
grateful. The movie theatre was full
of people; we had a matinee that day
of Cars 2. So we’re just really grateful
that the wind actually took it the other
direction instead of into the theatre. It
fell on the green space, and everybody
is fne,” said Crispin-Piche.
“Mom was outside and she was
bringing her fowers in… and knew
the storm was coming, so she thought
that she should bring them in. Then
the next thing you know she heard
like a big bang… she came inside and
she could see daylight in the lobby
and couldn’t fgure out why she could
see light through the ceiling. They
went outside and realized the wall had
fallen down because of the wind.”
“It was so fast… I had trouble com-
prehending what even happened. It
kind of pushed me back in the cub-
byhole, and then I came back into the
theatre and I could see daylight. It
took me forever to fgure out what had
happened, it was unbelievable. There
was no warning - it just came so fast,”
said Sheila Crispin, owner of the Joy-
land Theatre.
The wall that partially collapsed has
been in place since 1912, when Strath-
more town council insisted on build-
ing two frewalls to help protect some
of the businesses.

Joyland Theatre began as Hirtle’s
House in the 1920’s, built intention-
ally on the west side of the frewall by
Manuel Hirtle. In the 1950’s Len Lar-
son bought the theatre. Because the
theatre was still being called Hirtle’s
House, Larson held a contest to re-
name the theatre and so Joyland The-
atre was born. The theatre changed
hands a few more times before being
sold to Bill and Sheila Crispin in 1978.
The Crispin’s have run the theatre
since then, and plan to until they one
day retire.
The engineers and insurance people
were at the theatre on July 4 inspect-
ing the damage. Crispin said the the-
atre should be open in time for the
weekend.

The Harleys and Hotrods poker run
will be taking place on July 9 starting
with breakfast and registration. Any
style of bike or hotrod is welcome, and
everything will begin at Underground
Performance at 8:30 a.m.
“Any type of bike, any kind of hotrod
or street rod, muscle car whatever. Even
if you want to come out in grandma’s
old Volkswagen, it doesn’t matter. It’s
all for charity so we’re not turning any-
body away,” said Vince Orme, president
of the Harleys and Hotrods poker run
board, and owner of Underground Per-
formance.
This year at the end of the run ev-
eryone involved will meet at AAB Steel
located 10 minutes east of Strathmore.
There will be a live and silent auction,
and plenty of entertainment, including
performances by Silo and Big Yellow
Van. One of the items up for auction
is a hand carved mahogany motorbike,
which Orme said is really quite nice.
The bars that will be holding poker
cards this year are Mossleigh, Langdon,
Standard, Rockyford, Cooters and the
Strathmore Hotel. After participants col-
lect all their cards they will head back
to fnd out who has the best hand. Over
$72,000 has been raised in the past for
the Children’s Wish Foundation.
“We’ve kind of been averaging around
the $13,000 to $15,000 mark most years
so I’d like to see it grow and hit that
$100,000 mark this year,” said Orme.
There will be tickets available for
those who only would like to take part
in the events after the run at AAB Steel.
The tickets are selling for $20 at Under-
ground Performance until 3:30 p.m. on
July 9.

Did you know during a mosquito
bite, mosquito saliva is injected into
the bite as a local anesthetic and
anti-coagulant. The female mosquito
then proceeds to feed on the host
blood. This exchange of mosquito
saliva and blood is an excellent
opportunity for pathogens to spread
from mosquitoes to humans, and
from humans to humans using
mosquitoes as an intermediate.
However, getting diseases from
a mosquito bite will depend on
the geographic prevalence of
the disease and the species of
mosquitoes in that area.
Insect repellents;
- Apply insect repellent containing
DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide)
to exposed skin whenever you are
outdoors. The more DEET a repellent
contains the longer time it can
protect you from mosquito bites.
- Repellents may irritate the
eyes and mouth, so avoid applying
repellent to the hands of children.
- Whenever you use an
insecticide or insect repellent,
be sure to read and follow the
manufacturer’s DIRECTIONS FOR
USE, as printed on the product.
- Do not spray repellent
containing DEET on the skin under
your clothing. This is ineffective.
clothIng;
- When possible, wear long-
sleeves, long pants and socks when
outdoors.
- Treating clothes with repellents
containing DEET will give extra
protection, since mosquitoes may
bite through thin clothing.
- Place mosquito netting over
infant carriers when you are
outdoors with infants.
- Avoid wearing dark colored
clothing, as this attracts mosquitoes
- Avoid wearing perfume, as this
also attracts mosquitoes
Around your home;
- Install or repair window and
door screens so that mosquitoes
cannot get indoors.
- Help reduce the number of
mosquitoes in areas outdoors
where you work or play, by draining
sources of standing water. In this
way, you reduce the number of
places mosquitoes can lay their
eggs and breed.
- At least once or twice a week,
empty water from fower pots, pet
food and water dishes, birdbaths,
swimming pool covers, buckets,
barrels, and cans.
- Check for clogged rain gutters
and clean them out.

Parliamentary Report
Members of Parliament arrived home in their
constituencies in time to celebrate Canada’s 144th
Birthday! As always, throughout our large rid-
ing numerous communities organized events to
commemorate Canada Day. My family and I were
scheduled to be in Drumheller, Strathmore, Don-
alda, and spend the evening in Camrose. I bring
greetings and birthday wishes to everyone on be-
half of our Prime Minister, the Right Honourable
Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada.
Since the earliest days of our history, Canada
has been a land of promise. On Canada Day, we
celebrate our country’s achievements.
All across Canada, our celebration brings us to-
gether and strengthens our sense of community.
On Canada Day, Canadians young and old teach
and learn about the signifcance of the citizenship
we all share. In so doing, communities across our
country showcase our symbols; our identities; our
traditions; and, the talent of our local artists. As a
nation, we have good reason to be proud and to
express our pride - loud and clear.
We can be proud of the peaceful way we live.
Citizens of Canada enjoy freedom. We respect
each other - from coast to coast to coast. We ben-
eft from our differences in our large geographic
territory, and when we come together, our differ-
ences bring us strength.
Our great nation was built by previous genera-
tions of Canadians. Together, we try to build on
Canada’s past achievements. We work to protect
Canada’s accomplishments and standards and
provide for future generations of Canadians.
Canada was one of the last nations to be affect-
ed by the recent global recession. Canada was one
of the frst nations to emerge from it. In the midst
of the economic crisis, many nations envied Cana-
da and the strength and integrity of our economy.
In 2011, we have seen Middle Eastern and Af-
rican nations striving to secure the very core val-
ues that Canadians have also fought and died for:
Freedom; Democracy; and the rule of law. Cana-
dians have built on these values and created a
nation that qualifes to be a member of the G-8
group of nations. We embrace our role working
with our allies and partners in the international
community.
On Canada Day, we celebrate our remarkable
history and the bright outlook for our country’s
future. Throughout the country, we have also built
prosperous communities that are enriched by the
hard work and contributions of our citizens who
are ready to meet the challenges of our century.
Canada Day is a memorable occasion for all of us!

On June 24, the Cheadle Lions
Club and 4-H Alberta partnered
with Wheatland County to bring
the frst grain bag roundup to the
county. Grain bags were collect-
ed at the county yard to later be
shipped off to the Green Acre’s
Hutterite Colony where they start
a recycling process with the bags.
“One of those bags makes over
10,000 garbage bags, after it’s re-
cycled” said Marlene Risdon with
the Cheadle Lions.
Each grain bag weighs any-
where from 330 pounds to 400
plus pounds and all of it is 100
per cent recyclable. The three
popular routes for disposing of
the bags have been to bury them
on farms, burn them or haul
them to the landfll.
At the Green Acre Hutterite
Colony, the plastic is ripped and
shredded, and from there it goes
into the washers where it is fur-
ther refned. The heavier mate-
rial, rocks and grains, sink to the
bottom and the plastic will foat
to the top.
The shredded, cleaned plastic
is then made into round little
black pellets, which will eventu-
ally be turned into garbage bags.
While the process begins at the
Green Acre Colony, the fnal
product is made at the Clearview
Colony, also within Wheatland
County.
“We’re really excited about
this. Our Lions Club and the 4-H
Club, we’re not involved in this
(the garbage bags themselves)
but perhaps the local sport teams
or schools, maybe they want to
sell these for fundraisers,” said
Sonny Warrack, with the Cheadle
Lions Club.
“They would be selling a lo-
cally made product from a lo-
cally recycled waste, so we think
that makes good sense. We feel
there’s probably close to 500 of
these bags in our county and
that’s roughly 200,000 lbs of
plastic… so that’s a potential of a
half a million garbage bags if my
math is right.”
“The Cheadle Lions Club is re-
ally supportive of the community
and small groups like the 4-H
clubs, and they’ve got the food
grains project going too. Chea-
dle is super for that, they’ve got
a real good group,” said Don
Vandervelde, Wheatland County
Councillor.
The project began in 2005
when an outft in Calgary, Spe-
cialty Plastic, approached the
Green Acres Colony to see if they
wanted to buy the business. The
Colony jumped on board and
opened Crowfoot Plastic. After
about a month they received a
call to see if they also wanted to
go into pop container destruc-
tion for Pepsi and Coca Cola.
The Colony eventually found
they didn’t have enough help to
do the whole process, so Green
Acres sold the making of the
bags to the Clearview Colony.
“Grain bags right now, un-
less it will pick up, we’re run-
ning something like four days a
month,” said Henry Hofer, with
Green Acres Colony and an em-
ployee at Crowfoot Plastic.
Using grain bags has been a
growing thing as farm sizes have
grown.
It’s more cost effecient to use
the bags because it’s cheap stor-
age, said Warrack. It costs ap-
proximately .6 cents to .8 cents a
bushel to buy a bag and store the
grain until the farmer can get it
to the market. To build a bin that
size, farmers would be looking at
$2 a bushel.
The other motivation to use
the bags is effciency at harvest
time because the truck can be
parked, farmers can fll the grain
bags with combines if they want
to, but, most farms have grain
wagons which work well, said
Warrack.
“We do have a lot of farmers
involved in our club and we can
just see that this is a proactive
move to do something positive
with these grain bags. We just
wanted to be involved with that
and get the process going,” said
Warrack.
The way the grain bags are
rolled up is very important. They
must be rolled tightly and no
more than 3 ½ to 4 feet wide, and
the more dense the better. They
should be rolled with a machine.
Not many farmers will have a
machine that can roll the bags to
the dimensions Clearview would
like.
Leslie Storch with Greenslades
Northern Welding was at the
grain bag round up promoting
the ‘Poor Boy bag roller.’ The
Poor Boy can be pulled with a
quad, truck or car and will as-
sist with getting the bags the di-
mensions the Colony would like.
More information can be found
at www.greenslades.ca.
Wayne McKinnon with Ken-
wynn Farms Ltd brought in ap-
proximately three years worth of
grain bags to the round up.
“It’s good. Making use of a
product that would otherwise sit
there and do nothing, keeping it
out of the landflls,” said McKin-
non.
Wheatland County loaned the
use of a front-end loader and
tractor, an operator, the yard and
the facility.
“I think it’s great. It’s been a
long time coming. These grain
bags have been in existence for
a while and there hasn’t been a
real good means for farmers be-
ing able to get rid of them,” said
Russel Muenchrath, Agricultural
Fieldman for Wheatland County.
“I think this is the frst step,
getting the farmers used to what
is required as far as the tightness
and the rolling and stuff like that.
Then from our standpoint, I’ll be
bringing it back to our council-
lors to discuss what else the mu-
nicipality can do to assist with
this.”
This year the Wheatland Coun-
ty yard was chosen as the pilot
area because of its proximity to
the plant. There will be another
grain bag round up next year,
though if it will be at the county
yard again or not is still to be de-
termined.
Recycling initiative sweeps

Strathmore teen

After going through the list of usual suspects who

Councillor earl Best, right, decided Strathmore
teen Brooklyn Davidson was the most deserving
in his opinion.

The onus was on Councillor Earl Best
this month to determine whom he thinks
deserves the July Citizen of the Month
Award. After sifting through the usual
suspects in his head, Best fnally settled
on someone out of the ordinary.
He nominated Strathmore teen Brook-
lyn Davidson, who is well known in the
community for helping out with different
events.
“Because it’s interesting to see some-
one, who dedicates their life being as
short as it may be to the Town of Strath-
more, and for someone to be involved in
the town as much as Brooklyn is, it most
impresses me,” said Best, about why he
picked Davidson.
“This decision was made before this
thing at the skateboard park ever hap-
pened.”
Best said he had been thinking of the
people who have been in the town for a
number of years representing the town,
and said a lot of it is because it’s their
job. Best said in Davidson’s case it’s be-
cause she wants to.
“I’m honoured,” said Davidson.
“I just like helping, in church we come
up with service project ideas, so we’re
kind of always thinking of what we can
do to help out.”
While many people have great ideas
about how they can help, most don’t see
the ideas to fruition, which Davidson
said is the best part.
Davidson is a music lover who volun-
teered her time to play piano in Strath-

Expanding his role as an administrator
Westmount Principal
Wayne Funk is a little
nervous, but excited
to be taking on the
principal position at
Trinity Lutheran Chris-
tian Academy. Funk
will be sharing his time
between both of the
schools as an admin-
istrator.

Shannon LeClair Photo
Shannon LeCLair
Times Reporter
Westmount Principal Wayne Funk has
made the decision to add to his daily
administrative duties by taking on the
role of principal of Trinity Lutheran
Christian Academy, TLCA, in the wake
of Harold Warr’s departure.
“The division (Golden Hills) asked
me if I was interested in kind of widen-
ing my scope a little bit,” said Funk.
“After doing some considering with
my family and staff (I) decided it would
be kind of a neat challenge to take on
second school.”
He isn’t quite sure how he will be
able to juggle the two, but is confdent
it will work out in the end. Funk said
there are times he is sure he will be
sprinting across the feld to get from
one school to the other, but it’s some-
thing he is looking forward to.
He said the one thing he is most con-
cerned about is the toll it will take on
his family. Because he will now have
double everything - double the Christ-
mas concerts, double the parent educa-
tion night, double the three-year educa-
tion plans - Funk has given up some of
his volunteer duties in town.
Funk said he knows if TLCA doubles
in size, which it easily could, it would
become too much for one person, and
would likely be split again at that time.
One thing he would like to focus on
is changing the perception. Funk feels
there might be the perception in the
community the TLCA is a closed com-
munity, which it is not.
“It’s an open community, we would
welcome anybody who is interested in
a Christian education for their kids to
come in and be a part of what we think
is pretty exciting,” said Funk.
“For me, I haven’t even been there a
day yet, but it’s still pretty exciting to
see the things that are going on there.
It’s some neat stuff.”
The parents don’t necessarily have to
have a faith base, but do need to un-
derstand that there will be a faith-based
component to the week. Funk said he
has never worked in a Christian school
before and it’s going to be a new learn-
ing experience he is excited about.
Funk said his main focus will prob-
ably be helping the school grow as he
goes into the 2011/2012 year.
Funk has also given up his teaching
duties to focus on the two schools bet-
ter. Warr had spent a good portion of
his day teaching at TLCA, and Kristen
Odegard, who was hired last year in a
maternity leave position, will be staying
on full time, compensating for the loss
of Warr as a teacher.
Arrowwood author Lynne Squire was at the Strathmore library last Thursday, June 30, for an informa-
tion session and book signing. Lynn presents biblical truths through her story Joab’s Fire a distant
hope. The Christian writer along with the cover artist Darlene Crane are very excited about the wonder-
ful reviews the book has been receiving.

Those with a gift for gab will be com-
peting to see who is the best at the 23rd
Annual International Livestock Auction-
eer Championships July 15 and 16.
Contestants will begin the bidding
at the Calgary Stockyards Ltd. here in
Strathmore on July 15 at 10 a.m. The
event, organized by the Calgary Stam-
pede, rotates between Strathmore, Olds
and High River.
“We’ve been doing it for about 30
years. It was always a Calgary Stampede
function and then it grew too big for
them to handle so they started having
preliminary rounds at the satellite mar-
kets,” said Bryan Danard with Calgary
Stockyards.
“Our main auctioneer here, Cliff Pahl,
will be competing this year. He is our
full-time auctioneer here. This will be his
third or fourth time in the competition.”
There will be approximately 30 com-
petitors coming mainly from across Can-
ada and the U.S. Danards expects about
2,000 head of cattle will be sold during
the preliminary round.
“They are all current auctioneers that
sell for a living at different auction mar-
kets. This is just their chance to show-
case their talents,” said Danard.
“To someone that doesn’t know what
an auctioneer sounds like, they all kind
of sound the same. Once you get to
know them, there’s a big difference be-
tween a good one and a bad one.”
There are a number of things the com-
petitors are being judged on including
spotting bids, rhythm, clarity, voice con-

Rodeos are still going strong
across the globe, but in order
to keep the tradition alive
younger generations need to
continue participating. This
year at Heritage Days there
will be miniature bulls for kids
aged seven to 14 to ride. All
of the young cowboys and
cowgirls must have rodeo
experience to participate.
The bulls don’t grow any
taller than 48 inches, and
though they are smaller they
still have the same grit as their
big brothers.
“We work with ours quite a
bit because we deal with kids.
If we get ones that just are
always mean and it doesn’t
matter what we do or what we
try to do and they just don’t
change their attitude, then we
get rid of them because we
don’t want any kids getting
hurt,” said Barb Evans with
DEE-AB-LO Miniature Bucking
Bulls.
Evans said it started out as a
hobby, breeding the mini bulls.
Her stepson Kyle Graham was
at a rodeo when he asked if
he could bring a couple of
miniature bulls for the boys
steer riding. The business has
grown from there.
This is the frst year DEE-
AB-LO has come to Heritage
Days, and Evans said they are
excited to have a chance to
take part in it.
“We always want our event
and our show to grow, and by
bringing in new acts and new
entertainment it’s just a way to
show that we’re evolving with
the times,” said Darcy Ledene,
general manager with the Ag.
Society.
“This was a cool opportunity
to bring these guys in and
showcase the young talent
that are up-and-coming in the
rodeo business, and give them
the opportunity to perform (to)
probably their biggest crowd
ever.”
The boys steer riding during
Heritage Days is another
event to show they are trying
to keep the youth involved
in the rodeo and keep the
tradition going for years to
come.
Mini Bulls
The Encana Stage will once again be the place to
be when your favourite rodeo events aren’t taking
place. This year the lineup includes a couple of
old favourites such as Doo Doo the clown, new
favourites and local talent. Throughout Heritage
Days local residents Graydon Pease and Ken
Stobbe will also be performing.
The biggest name coming this year is Hey Romeo
out of Edmonton who will be playing on the stage
July 31.
“They come in being CCMA award nominated
as well as an award-winning band,” said Darcy
Ledene, general manager for the Ag. Society.
Local band Pulse, who recently played during the
Centennial celebrations at Kinsmen Park, will hit the
stage July 28.
On July 29 there will be two bands playing on the
Encana stage, Genuine Cowgirls and TC & Company.
Drew Gregory from Standard, who is also taking
part in the Big Valley Jamboree, will be performing
July 30 in the afternoon.
“I know he just went down to Nashville and
recorded his second CD and he’s really excited.
We’re happy to have him on the stage,” said
Ledene.
Saturday night hypnotist Sebastian Steel will be
performing. He has performed in Strathmore before,
doing a private show for the high school. On Sunday,
July 31 there will be two bands flling the afternoon
and evening again. The Amber Williams Band out of
Rocky Mountain House will be up frst, followed by
Hey Romeo in the evening.
“Then we fnish things off on Monday with Denver
Daines, and Denver comes with a rodeo pedigree.
He’s a competitor in the rodeo, so he’ll be riding
saddle bronc in our rodeo and then coming onto our
stage and playing a good mix of music,” sad Ledene.
Daines has a new band behind him. Ledene said
they are kind of a country/rock band, and they will
be the closing act for this year’s Heritage Days.

Rockyford celebrated Canada Day in style
July 1. The fun-flled day began with baseball
games in the morning and hose coupling in the
afternoon. Families gathered at the arena and
campground with their trailers and ffth-wheel-
ers for the day and spent time visiting with their
neighbours. A barbecue and bonfre wrapped
up the day before the spectacular freworks
show at the Rodeo grounds later that night.

trol, livestock knowledge, the ability to
conduct a sale and more. Danard said
the stands will be full, but out of all of
the people at the auction only 20 of
them may be buyers so it is up to the
auctioneers to fgure out who those buy-
ers are and close the sale strong.
Bruce Flewelling has worked at Cal-
gary Stockyards all his life, and is one of
the main auctioneers.
“My dad auctioneered at all them… so-
cials and stuff and when I was a kid I just
kind of took after him and I just prac-
ticed, and practiced and practiced, then I
started selling at the Calgary Stockyards.
I worked here quite a while before I
starting auctioneering,” said Flewelling.
In 1981 and 1982 he competed in the
competition and came away with second
place. Flewelling also competed a third
time, winning third place.
“It was just the thing to do, we all auc-
tioneered, just (to) try to win it,” said
Flewelling.
Danard said they are still looking for
auctioneers to participate. Anyone inter-
ested can go to the Stockyards located
one mile west of Strathmore and they
will be given an entry form. Or interest-
ed parties can call 403-234-7429, and a
form can be e-mailed or faxed.

The votes are in and Strathmore’s
Best Hamburger has been named. The
contest began June 3, and on July 2 the
best burger was announced. The Road-
house took the title with their Smoke-
house Burger.
“That one stood out, because we’ve
got a few other burgers and some of the
girls (said), ‘ah, the chuck wagon’, and
I go, ‘no, the smokehouse.’ I just picked
it - that’s what was in my head, it just
came out,” said Belinda Derraugh, gen-
eral manager for the Roadhouse.
“It was a lot of fun. We got over 300
nominations back and that just tells me
that the people in the Town are inter-
ested, and it’s helping local businesses
by doing this,” said Councillor Earl Best.
Best said they wanted to do some-
thing for Centennial so the Town, the
Strathmore and District Chamber of
Commerce and the Strathmore Times
joined forces to bring Strathmore’s frst
Best Hamburger in Town contest.
They got the criteria together, took it
out to all of the restaurants and then
people from the general public nomi-
nated their favourites. The top three
burgers were tested and then the win-
ner was chosen. Best said he hopes the
contest can become an annual event.
Derraugh said she was at the restau-
rant when judges Earl Best and Mario
Prusina were sampling the smokehouse
burger. After asking them how it was
she decided to leave them alone and
head up to the offce. While working
away she got a call from Best asking
her to come back, and that’s when she
was told the Roadhouse had won the
contest.
Derraugh has been at the restaurant
for 16 years, since it opened. She said
that’s where she eats.
She believes the fact that the burgers
are specially made is why it won.
“We make up our own patties. We
don’t make them at the restaurant, we
have a butcher in Calgary where we get
all our meat from and the owner tells
the butcher what to put in the burgers,
and how much fat to put in the burger,
and they make them up how we want
them,” said Derraugh.
“I think our food is the best. I think
our food is the best overall, because we
do a lot of prep. We don’t open cans, we
don’t open packets. We make our own
soups, our own salsa, our own gravy…
we make everything.”
The smokehouse burger is a regular
item on the menu, so for those who
haven’t tried it yet, there’s still time.

The winner of the best burger contest was announced at Kinsmen Park on July 2, during the centen-

“We’re still hoping to maybe have
kind of an opening with the school
kids on it maybe this fall when they just
get back to school,” said Shorhen.
“We’ll have just (have)… a meet and
greet on the feld with all of the differ-
ent elementary kids. Again everything
sort of depends on the damage to the
feld.”
The feld is now blocked off with ce-
ment barriers so no one else will be
able to get their vehicle onto it.
Anyone with any information about
the vandalism at the soccer feld can

Last summer the work began to bring
two new professional sized soccer
felds to Strathmore. The felds, located
behind Walmart just east of the Ranch
Estates, were almost ready to open
when disaster struck.
“We were just in the works of get-
ting the fence put around and some
nice person decided to pull donuts in
the feld, tear up the sod and put nice
tracks in,” said Mark Shorhen, president
of Strathmore Minor Soccer Association.
“We haven’t got the estimate yet if
they’ve done damage to the irrigation
system. We could possibly be looking
at a $20,000 or $30,000 repair bill for a
feld we still haven’t gotten to use yet,
it’s kind of frustrating.”
The incident took place either late

Late June 24, or early June 25 the new soccer

years and will be quite extensive, and
expensive. The County is working to-
wards having the study done so it can
be shown to Alberta Environment, to
allow the release of the water into the
Bow River. The county is working un-
der a fve-year timeline to complete the
study and build a plant if need be.
HVAC upgrAdes
The county offces will be upgrading
their HVAC, heating, ventilation and air
conditioning system by adding a re-
mote log-in diagnostics unit. By adding
the unit, technicians will rarely have to
drive out to fx a problem, and instead
will be able to do it from their laptop at
the offce. Service calls in the past have
cost the county approximately $200 per
call. The cost of putting in the unit is
$4,080 with the funds coming out of the
contingency fund.
LeAky roof soon to be fixed
Work will begin soon on repairing the
roof at the county offces. Scott Builders
had assessed the damage and had pre-
sented fve different options to council.
Due to all of the different slopes on
parts of the roof, it was decided the best
way to deal with the repairs is in an
area specifc manner. The cost will be
approximately $65,400.
RFP’s being sent out for Carseland sewage lagoon
June 24, or early June 25. The fence
had been up three quarters of the way
down the feld, said Shorhen. It was just
a small area of access, which is where
the suspects entered the feld.
Strathmore Minor Soccer had been
hoping to have their June 28 wind-up
party at the feld, which they were un-
able to do. Minor Soccer is now work-
ing on getting an assessment on what
sort of repairs they are looking at.
“(It’s) very frustrating that someone
would be so irresponsible that they
would just perform damage to a newly
developed soccer feld,” said Dennis
Klem, vice-president of the association.
Shorhen said the day after fnding
out about the vandalism at the new
felds he went to the Parkwood feld,
where more damage had been done.
While it wasn’t donuts all over the feld,
there was still enough damage to tear
up some of the feld.
Shorhen is convinced there must be
someone who knows something about
what happened. Because of the vandal-
ism, the opening of the feld has been
pushed back until possibly this fall.
Epcor continues to show their support
epcor has been a big supporter of the Strathmore Fire Department for a number of years. every year, for approximately
fve years they have donated a cheque for $1,500 to the department. epcor also has volunteers come out to help with the
frefghters breakfast that takes place every Canada Day. The money donated by epcor goes towards purchasing equipment
and providing specialized training.

It was a tough year for the Ban-
tam girl’s lacrosse team. Coming to-
gether, out of 18 girls, only one had
had experience playing the game
before.
“I feel they did very well this
year” said head coach Todd Better-
ton.
Having many beginners, every-
thing had to be taught fresh from
the start.
“Catching, passing, shooting, ball
control and just the basic funda-
mentals of lacrosse were the big-
gest challenge” said Betterton.
Fundamentals were not the only
thing however. Team building and
how to work well together was a
big aspect as well, and that goes for
any kind of team sport.
“It took a lot of courage for these
girls to come into a game like la-
crosse because it is a contact sport”
said Betterton.
Despite all odds however, the
girls learned to play well together.
They learned the basic rules and
fundamentals of the sport and on
their second last game they took
hold of success.
Winning 3-2 against a Calgary
team, Betterton said “the fans erupt-
ed; it was like winning the Stanley
Cup for them”.
Betterton was quite pleased with
the total outcome of the season. It
was his frst year out of six years
of coaching to have that many be-
ginning the sport. However, he said
they were really a great bunch of
kids and they supported each other
tremendously.
“They tried to execute everything
that I taught them” said Betterton.
Betterton hopes that because of
the great season that the girls had,
that more interest will be gener-
ated. Hopefully by next year there
will be more interest developed and
there could be more girls lacrosse
teams started up in Strathmore.
Betterton who is also President
of the Strathmroe Lacrosse Club,
wanted to thank all the kids in the
lacrosse association for their hard
work this season, all the parent
volunteers that were there to help
throughout, all the coach volun-
teers, the hard working referees,
and to all the arena staff that makes
lacrosse such a special sport.
The outdoor soccer season is now over for another year
and everyone was excited to get together and bounce as
a fnal windup to the season. The U4 to U8 soccer teams
held a huge BBQ on June 28 at Parkwood. The organiz-
ers couldn’t be prouder of all the hard work put in by its
members and coaches and are looking forward to their
new feld that will be ready to play on next year.

The third annual Canadian Rockies In-
ternational Rodeo, CRIR, took place in
Strathmore over the weekend. The rodeo
consisted of representatives from the Al-
berta Rockies Gay Rodeo Association,
ARGRA, and the International Gay Rodeo
Association, IGRA, and saw people come
from all over the country, and the world, to
take part in the fun. There were the usual
rodeo events, and a number of fundrais-
ing events on the midway such as the drag
queen dunk tank.

The Strathmore Thunder bantam B girls softball team is
preparing for the Alberta Softball Bantam B Girls Provin-
cials, which take place at the Ag. diamonds on July 8 - 10.
The girls have had a busy season, competing in 31 games
to date.
The weekend of June 24, the team jumped up to a bantam
A level for a tournament in Calgary, bringing home fourth
place.
“The outfeld play may be our weakest (area), but come
the weekend we will have the players that I am sure will
step up and make the big play in the outfeld,” said coach
Lanky Johnson in a press release.
Most of the 10 teams here for provincials this year have
all played each other throughout the year and results have
gone back and forth.
Red Deer, Camrose, Medicine Hat, Lloydminster, Edmon-
ton, Lacombe and Leduc will all bring very talented teams.
The Thunder will be counting on strong pitching from
Kirstyn Johnson and continued strong batting from Leah
Dahm, Megan Lecavalier and rookie Alyssa Lavallee. Each
team will have a chance to play four games in the round
robin on Friday and Saturday, and the top two teams will
advance to playoffs on Sunday. Results will be updated and
posted throughout the weekend at www.strathmorefast-
pitch.com.

Showering just prior
to tanning will clear
the skin of any potential barriers
that might hinder the tan. Applying
a tanning lotion right after a shower
will help the lotion absorb more
readily into the skin and prepare it
for the tan. The exception is with
lotions that make your skin heat up
and “tingle” - proximity to the tanning
session time is a little more critical
with those lotions. Ideally, you should
wait a few hours after tanning to take
a shower. The reason: Skin takes a
while to process the light that it has
received into a tan. Taking a shower
right after a tan won’t eliminate the
tan altogether, but it will
minimize the total impact of
that individual session.

Have you been wondering where those entry forms are for the upcoming Heritage Days
Creative Arts Show? Are you wondering if your entries will qualify?
This year the Creative Arts Committee has decided to change our format a bit to allow better
focus on our Heritage. We will be offering the Creative Arts salute to the FIRST HUNDRED
YEARS in the Civic Center. There will be four main classes to enter - Original Art (any
medium), Photography, Quilting, and Handicrafts (including woodworking). For interest and
entertainment we also chose Heritage Cookbooks for an additional display. “It’s interesting
to see some of the measurements used to come up with those prize winning creations that
Grandma used to make.” commented Lynn Walker, chair of the committee.
All items will be for DISPLAY ONLY. We will not have the Department of Agriculture judges
critiquing each entry. This expands the opportunity for people to enter items they have
submitted in past years as well as items they own that have been crafted by other friends or
family members over the past hundred years. New Items entered for display this year will be
eligible for judging next year as we once again resume the format previously followed.
The PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDSwill offer the only prizes won. Public voting will occur all day
Saturday with ballots being handed out as you enter the hall. First, second and third place
prizes will be awarded in each of the four classes and prize winners will be announced on the
Encana Stage, Sunday morning following Cowboy Church at around 11:00 am.
If you have entries you would like to submit for display, forms can be picked up at the
Ag Society Offce or from any of the committee members.
Entries will be accepted on Friday, July 29th from 4:00 to 7:00 pm in the Civic Center.
The Creative Arts show will be open to the public as follows:
Saturday, July 30 10:00 to 6:00
Sunday, July 31 10:00 to 6:00
In addition to the displays, Saturday will offer a fashion show of clothing over the past
millennium. This will begin at 2:00 pm. Sunday will offer spinning demonstrations all afternoon
and will take you on the journey from sheep to shawl. Entertainment by the HUGS choir at
2:00 will provide a relaxing ambiance as you are taken on a musical journey through the past
hundred years. Come, enjoy and sing along if you are so inclined.
Another feature this year will be the Coffee Corral where coffee and cookies will be
provided for anyone taking in the craft show.
“What a great opportunity to showcase our heritage. The Committee is looking forward to
providing a quality show that can be enjoyed by all ages. We hope everyone will take the
opportunity to come join us as we salute THE FIRST HUNDRED YEARS ” said Walker.
