“Bridge to Nowhere” Excursion for Active Duty
Active Duty service members from stations all around San Diego came together on Saturday, 18 June for an amazing Hiking and Bungee Jump Excursion. The ASYMCA partnered up with NBSD’s Pacific Beacon to provide this great opportunity for military personnel to get out and enjoy San Diego! This past June, one special event took the San Diego Armed Services YMCA all the way down to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico! On June 23rd– 26th, the San Diego ASYMCA was thrilled to participate in the 15th Annual Stars & Stripes Fishing, Golf and Music Festival—a four-day fundraiser benefiting the ASYMCA and four other Southern California charities. ASYMCA Board Members and Wounded Warriors attended the Stars & Stripes Tournament and participated in the golf and fishing tournaments during the weekend. Thank you Stars & Stripes for your support!

Welcome
With summer comes hiking, golfing, fishing, and even some bungee jumping! We hope you enjoy this month’s SNAPSHOT.

The Armed Services YMCA Naval Medical Center had our busiest month all year in June. The community support for our wounded, injured, and ill continues to pour in as summer kicks off! This month, we worked with Clark Hudson and his wonderful team at a local law firm to take a group of wounded warriors to a Padres game for a tailgate and Meet & Greet. We also organized a wonderful steak dinner with sponsorship from the Upchurch Foundation for service members, while giving their caretakers a break and treating them to a pampering Spa Day!

Wounded, Injured and Ill Programs at NMC

The Low Tide Ride and Stride also brought out some patients and staff from NMC to run, walk, or bike in the 8.2 miles along the beach of Silver Strand. ASY also facilitated a visit from Wounded Heroes Fund to serve over 450 steaks to patients, families, and staff. Country singing twins, Nik and Sam, brought a smile to their faces as they visited the hospital and entertained the wounded warriors.

Intercession Day Out
IDO (Intersession Day Out): Summer has begun and 25 military kids, ages 10 to 15, experienced a fun filled day at Petco Park! Everyone enjoyed an afternoon of baseball, cheering on the Padres while making new friends and enjoying the sun!

Operation Hero

The Operation Hero program finished the last session before summer with 2nd and 3rd graders. During the 2010-2012 school year 97 military students from five local schools learned new tools and strategies to handle the challenges associated with being in a military family. Thanks to the American Legion and local Post for donating back packs to all of the graduating Operation Hero students!

Thank you SD Fair!
The San Diego ASYMCA would like to extend a big thank you to the San Diego Fair for donating thousands of tickets for military and their families. On our ticket giveaway days, the ticket line extended well into our parking lot. Thank you for giving MANY military families the opportunity to enjoy the San Diego Fair!

Final thoughts...
From the Desk of Executive Director Paul Steffens:
As you can see, June was a very active month around the San Diego ASYMCA— everything from hiking, bungee jumping, golfing and fishing in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, Trips to Petco Park, participation in the Coronado Low Tide Ride and Stride, and free tickets to the San Diego Fair… and .. the last session of the school year for military students participating in Operation Hero. ……………………………………………………………………………………………. We were most fortunate this year to be selected to be one of the non-profit beneficiaries of the annual Stars and Stripes Fishing, Golf and Music festival in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Included in our representation at the event were three members of our Board of Management and two staff members. We were also pleased to include two Wounded Warriors from the Naval Medical Center. It is noteworthy that the Wounded Warriors set some benchmarks—for (1) hitting the longest tee shots in our foursome and for (2) landing a 200 pound Marlin in the catch and toss fishing tournament. ……………………………………………………………………………………………. I want to take this time to express my personal appreciation, and that of the entire San Diego Armed Services YMCA team, to Captain Rick Williamson, Commanding Officer, Naval Base San Diego, for his outstanding support over the past three years. His heart is truly into doing all he can to assist our military service members and their families. As he departs San Diego for duty in Washington, D.C., we wish him continued success.
