Dear fellow members:
I am honored to have been elected to serve as the 61st president of the University Club of Albany.
As I embark on my term, I look forward to carrying on the traditions that my predecessors established before me, while breathing new life into the club and leading it to a long, bright future.
Ensuring the existence of the club for many generations to come will most certainly require collaboration
and vision. I am happy to be surrounded by so many talented, dedicated people on the board of directors.
They each share my, and your, devotion to the club and will work tirelessly to see it succeed.
I cannot discuss the past or future of the club without mentioning Colleen Ryan and the University Club of Albany Foundation. As Board President from 2013-2015, Colleen devoted an incredible amount of time and energy to the club, its programming and its members. I look forward to her continued participation and advice during
my term and beyond.
The University Club Foundation, too, has been an integral part of the club’s success in recent years. They have
been instrumental in raising awareness and funds for numerous maintenance and capital projects for the club
and are, quite literally, responsible for keeping a roof over our heads. Many thanks to their Board - President
Vito Grasso, Vice President Chris Burke, Treasurer Michael Hurt and Secretary Richard Berkley - for their efforts on behalf of the club. I am excited to explore even more opportunities to partner in the future.
And, I would be remiss if I didn’t offer my deepest gratitude to each of you. Without you there would be no
University Club. Your financial and personal support make the UC the warm, friendly place we all love so
much. I hope to see you there sometime soon.
Cordially,
Nate Maloney

The State University of New York, took possession
of the Delaware and Hudson Railroad Building in
downtown Albany as its system headquarters in 1972
and moved to the space in 1977 after interior renovations. Though officially deemed SUNY Plaza since
that time, the building is often referred to by locals
as “The D&H Building” or, affectionately, “The
Castle.”
Though SUNY Plaza presents as a cohesive whole,
the building, or buildings, were actually constructed
in 6 parts between 1914-18. The initial portion of the
complex, built in 1914-15, includes the five-story
block at the north end and the thirteen-story tower,
connected by the long five-story diagonal wing. Another five-story wing was constructed in 1915-18,
south of the central tower. At the same time, at the
south end, a separate but physically connected and
visually compatible building was constructed to
house the headquarters of the Albany Evening Journal, the newspaper of William Barnes, Jr., the powerful Republican political boss of Albany.
As SUNY and the city celebrate the centennial of the
D&H Building, the University is undertaking capital
projects to enhance its accessibility. The construction
project currently taking place on the grounds in front
of the building will create a more welcoming parklike atmosphere to enhance the enjoyment of downtown visitors, workers and residents.

Mayor Kathy Sheehan was there too.

The University Club was founded in 1901, but it wasn’t until 1938 that women were admitted to the Club as “Privilege
Members.” A generation or so later, after four years of intense debate, women were admitted to full membership on
March 24, 1983, by a vote of 223 to 85. In May of that year, Lois Wilson became the first woman elected to full membership and one year later, in 1984, she was the first woman elected to the board.
When Lois received the 3rd Age Award in 2011, Senior Services of Albany described Lois Wilson as “a woman of many
firsts. She was the first woman to be elected to the University Club Board of Directors and was the first woman to serve
as president of the Board of Trustees at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Albany.”
Although she retired in 1997 after 30 years of state service, Lois has continued to work tirelessly to advance social justice
and sound public policy at home and abroad.
In 1998, she co-founded the Capital District Senior Issues Forum (CDSIF), a grassroots, voluntary initiative among faith
communities, organizations and individuals that provide support for seniors in the Capital District through education and
dialogue.
Lois is a driving force behind the Committee on Ghana at Westminster Presbyterian Church. The Committee has raised
money to create scholarships to send children to school, while missionary volunteers have gone to Ghana to help build a
new chapel and plant trees to prevent flooding.
She is also a lead volunteer in the Coalition to Assist in Planning Activities for homeless families and veterans living in a
shelter program at Schuyler Inn in Menands. The community coalition organizes social events, holiday gifts, homework
help, clothing donations and other efforts to support Schuyler Inn clients.
Join your Board as we celebrate the leadership, both in the Club and in the community, of longtime member Lois
Wilson at a luncheon on Thursday, June 25 at noon.
The featured speaker will be Philip McCallion, Ph.D. ACSW, co-director of The Center for Excellence in Aging & Community Wellness (CEACW) of the University at Albany’s School of Social Welfare. The CEACW promotes the adoption
of effective, innovative practices and policies that address the needs of aging persons, their families and caregivers with
an emphasis on vulnerable and oppressed populations.
$25 per person. For more information or to register, please email [email protected] or call 518-463-1151.

Thanks to those who so generously donated to the Raise the Roof Capital Campaign, we
are fully funded and have begun the roof project! Our current roof is tar and gravel, so
the first step was getting the gravel off the roof so our new rubber membrane roof can
be installed. A crew came in to scrape it up and then used the biggest vacuum we’ve
ever seen to remove it. Plumbers, electricians and the cable company have moved
countless wires, cables and HVAC equipment. Once everything has been taken down
and stored and/or temporarily relocated the actual process of installing the roof can take
place. Materials will be delivered on May 30th. We’ll keep you posted!

Summer hours begin Monday, June 29th - lunch Monday-Friday 11:30 a.m. to 3
p.m. and Friday dinner 5:308:30 p.m.

The U Club Foundation is working with a private collector to offer a number of exquisite, signed Waterford
Crystal pieces for sale. The pieces are discounted 20%
off retail and 20% of the price will be donated to the
UCF. Many are currently displayed in the lobby and
we’re planning a Waterford crystal event for the fall.
Stop by and check them out.
