The Albany County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce the graduation of K‐9 “Moe” from the 20 week New York State Police Academy K‐9 School held in Cooperstown NY. The K‐9 has been named “Moe” in honor of retired Sr. Investigator Maureen McGuire‐Honikel. Maureen was known to most by her nickname, “Moe”. She began her extensive career with the Albany County Sheriff’s Office in the late 1970’s. She served as a Deputy Sheriff, Sergeant, Investigator and Senior Investigator. Sr. Investigator Honikel came from a large family of law enforcement officers. She was highly respected by her peers in Federal, State and local law enforcement communities and was extremely dedicated officer. Sr. Investigator Maureen McGuire‐ Honikel died in November 2011 from brain cancer. K‐9 Moe has been trained specifically in explosive detection and tracking. Moe and his handler will be assigned to the Sheriff’s Headquarters were in addition to patrol work he will be tasked with checking all County owned buildings as well as being made available for area agencies to call on.
