K&L Gates major practice areas include corporate and transactional; energy, infrastructure, and resources; financial services, intellectual property; litigation and dispute resolution; real estate; and regulatory policy.

K&L Gates was formed in 2007 through the merger of Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Nicholson Graham with Preston Gates & Ellis of Seattle. Since its establishment, the firm has also combined with Hughes & Luce of Dallas, Texas and Kennedy Covington Lobdell & Hickman LLC, which is based in North Carolina. Its latest merger, in 2009, brought the firm together with the Chicago-based Bell, Boyd & Lloyd. The firm’s clients range from major global corporations to educational institutions and individuals. US offices are located in Anchorage, Austin, Boston, Dallas, Chicago, Fort Worth, Harrisburg, Los Angeles, Miami, Newark, New York, Orange County, Palo Alto, Pittsburgh, Portland, Raleigh, Research Triangle Park, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Spokane/ Coeur d’Alene, and Washington. In an effort to promote its attorney’s advancement, K&L Gates has a firm-wide Professional Development Department

that provides associates with formal and informal training opportunities. Informal training opportunities include a mentoring and coaching program, pro bono work, and practice group participation. Associates who are involved in the mentoring program are aided in the development of an associate development plan, or a six-month schedule for reaching specific goals. Associates receive further guidance through the firm’s Annual Review Process, which provides feedback and guidance in a number of professional areas. The K&L Gates Legal Practice Institute draws from the experience and knowledge of partners and senior associates as they present information on specific practice areas through live programs, firm-wide video conferences, online libraries, and more. The institute also supports curriculum in the areas of client development and relationship management, practice management, writing and research, lawyering skills, and professionalism and ethics.
