2011 Kentucky Derby Pedigree Analyses
animal kingdom
Trainer: H. Graham Motion Owner: Team Valor International Breeder: Team Valor (KY)
hile no one can question the racetrack abilities of Animal Kingdom, the son of Brazilian-bred champion grass horse Leroidesanimaux and German group III winner Dalicia, some may wonder how he will handle the Churchill Downs dirt on Kentucky Derby Day. Animal Kingdom has had only four starts but has won twice—breaking his maiden over Keeneland’s Polytrack last fall and capturing the Vinery Racing Spiral Stakes (gr. III), also on Polytrack, at Turfway Park March 26. Both races were at 11⁄8 miles, indicating Animal Kingdom is perfectly capable of covering two turns. But what about the dirt factor? Both Animal Kingdom’s dam and sire were terrific racehorses, but neither was ever tested on the dirt. While it’s a gamble as to how Animal Kingdom will handle a surface he’s never tried and one with which his family doesn’t have much experience, one can only hope he is able to add versatility to a resume that already includes a stellar pedigree and inherent talents. Animal Kingdom’s sire Leroidesanimaux, a son of Candy Stripes, loved running around two turns. In fact, some of Leroidesanimaux’ biggest victories came at 11⁄16 miles: The Citation Handicap (gr. IT), the Fourstardave Handicap (gr. IIT, during his championship season in 2005), and the Inglewood Handicap (gr. IIIT). While Leroidesanimaux never competed in the Triple Crown, he did fare well in another highly important race—the 2005 NetJets Breeders’ Cup Mile (gr. IT), in which he missed by just three quarters of a length to Artie Schiller. Leroidesanimaux’s sire, Candy Stripes, also ran a respectable second in another famous one-mile race—the 1985 French Two Thousand Guineas (Fr-I), while Leroidesanimaux’ grandsire, Blushing Groom, won the same contest in 1977. The most promising aspect of Animal Kingdom’s being sired by Leroidesanimaux is the fact the stallion’s best offspring, Always a Princess, has excelled on the dirt. The 4-year-old filly captured the 11⁄16mile Indiana Oaks (gr. II) at Hoosier Park and ran third in the one-mile Chilukki Stakes (gr. II) on the Churchill dirt, giving hope that Animal Kingdom may also like the surface. Always a Princess also has won two grade II contests on Santa Anita’s synthetic Pro-Ride surface this year. In all, Leroidesanimaux, who has three crops of racing age, has sired three stakes winners—allgraded—and his progeny have earned $3.3 million. Out of the Ahonoora mare Dissemble, the stallion is a half brother to Brazilian group winners Uapybo and Disport. Animal Kingdom was bred in Kentucky by Team Valor, which bought the colt’s German-bred dam Dalicia at the end of her 4-year-old season for about $400,000. At the time, that was a record price for a broodmare prospect sold at public auction in Germany, according to Team Valor syndicate founder/owner Barry Irwin. Dalicia had stood out to Irwin because of her impressive physical appearance, as well as the fact that in winning the 2005 Preis der Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe (Ger-III) at Baden Baden, she beat German and Italian Horse of the Year Soldier Hollow. Also worth noting is the fact the Preis der Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe was contested at the Derby distance of 1¼ miles. Dalicia is a daughter of six-time German champion racehorse and four-time leading German sire Acatenango, and her second dam Diasprina is a German stakes winner and German champion producer. Dalicia was resold for $397,316 to Shadai Farm at the 2009 Tattersalls December sale. In foal to Mr. Greely, she was consigned by European Sales Management, agent. That foal, now a 2-year-old colt named Thursby, is her only other named offspring. Esther Marr

anthony’s cross
Trainer: Eoin G. Harty Owner: A D K Racing Breeder: George Strawbridge (PA)
he best trait Anthony’s Cross possesses heading into the Triple Crown is that the son of Indian Charlie was bred to run all day. His female family, bred four generations deep by the highly successful Pennsylvania owner/breeder George Strawbridge, is rich in two-turn stakes horses. Anthony’s Cross’ dam Screening, by Unbridled out of Recording, was unraced but she already has proved her worth as a broodmare by producing two graded stakes winners from her first two foals. Screening’s first foal is Fugitive Angel, by Alphabet Soup, who won the 11⁄16-mile Pin Oak Valley View Stakes by 33⁄4 lengths at Keeneland last fall. Anthony’s Cross broke his maiden at 11⁄16 miles then earned grade-winner status in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes (gr. II) over 11⁄8 miles at Santa Anita Park, defeating favorite Tapizar and Riveting Reason. He is not a lock to be part of the Kentucky Derby presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) field, considering as of April 20 he is 25th on the graded earnings list ($182,000), with horses already declared off the Derby trail excluded. Stranger things have happened throughout the Derby prep season, so Anthony‘s Cross may find his way to the starting gate yet. Anthony’s Cross is owned by Arianne de Kwiatkowski, who bought the colt for $300,000 out of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select yearling sale from Derry Meeting Farm. Anyone looking for a horse to compete in the classic races would have looked hard at this colt. Screening is out of graded stakes winner Recording, who is

also the first foal out of her multiple graded stakes-winning dam Ratings. Recording was lightly raced at 3, having won only three races in nine starts. Her victories, however, include the Sands Point Stakes (gr. IIIT), and she placed in the Lake George Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Saratoga. A daughter of Danzig, she went on to produce nine winners from 16 named foals of racing age. Her winners include two graded stakes winners—Representing and Smart Bid. Representing (by Rahy), who won her grade I in Switzerland, won six times at 11⁄2 miles and three times at 11⁄4 miles in France and Switzerland. Smart Bid (by Smart Strike) won at 11⁄8 miles in taking the Mervin H. Muniz Jr. Memorial Handicap (gr. II). Additional stamina mixed with speed can be found on the sire side. Indian Charlie won the 11⁄8-mile Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) and finished third in the Kentucky Derby by 21⁄2 lengths behind Real Quiet and Victory Gallop. He is by California sire In Excess, who won the 1991 Suburban Handicap (gr. I) at 11⁄4 miles and won five stakes at 11⁄8 miles including the Woodward Stakes and the Whitney Stakes (both grade I). In Excess was also capable of showing brilliance at shorter distances, having won stakes at six furlongs and one at seven furlongs in England before being shipped to the United States in 1990. If Anthony’s Cross doesn’t make it to the Derby, then mark him as one to watch in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I). Eric Mitchell

archarcharch
Trainer: William H. Fires Owner: Robert and Loval Yagos Breeder: Grapestock (KY)
a
rcharcharch’s April 16 victory at 25-1 in the 11⁄8-mile Arkansas Derby (gr. I) was heralded as the latest upset on the 2011 Derby Trail. However, careful observers knew that the dark bay/brown colt has been one of the most consistent performers in this year’s 3-year-old crop. He debuted November 27, finishing a fast-closing second at seven furlongs at Churchill Downs. He then broke his maiden December 18 in the six-furlong Sugar Bowl Stakes at Fair Grounds. This year, all of his starts have been at Oaklawn Park. On January 17, he finished fourth in the mile Smarty Jones Stakes, after uncharacteristically showing early speed. He then won the mile Southwest Stakes (gr. III) and finished third in the Rebel Stakes (gr. II) before his Arkansas Derby heroics. Aboard for all six of Archarcharch’s starts was jockey Jon Court. Court’s father-in-law William “Jinks” Fires, who appears to have his first Derby starter after 50 years in the business, trains the colt. Archarcharch is owned by Robert and Loval Yagos, who purchased the Kentucky-bred at the 2009 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
As his name suggests, Archarcharch is by Arch, a grade I winner who earned $480,969. Arch’s biggest win came in the 1998 Super Derby (gr. I), at the same distance as the Kentucky Derby. He also won the 1998 Fayette Stakes (gr. III) at Keeneland, setting a track record for 13⁄16 miles. In 10 crops of racing age, Arch has sired 29 stakes winners. He has been a versatile sire, with grade I winners on both dirt and turf. However, most of his runners have done best at distances past a mile. Arch is best known as the sire of Blame, 2010 champion older horse and conqueror of Zenyatta. Other prominent offspring by Arch include grade I winner Arravale, who earned $1,129,697, and group I winners Overarching and Les Arcs. His top performers of 2011, in addition to Archarcharch, include Toocleverforwords, winner of the Stage Door Betty (gr. III) at Calder, Inscrutable, who captured the 1¼-mile Prix Policeman in France, and Newsdad, who finished third in the Palm Beach Stakes (gr. III) on the turf at Gulfstream. Archarcharch’s dam is the Woodman mare Woodman’s Dancer. She was a California girl, winning or placing in 16 of 19 starts in the Golden State, while earning $298,486. She earned most of her money at sprint distances, with her longest win at seven furlongs. She failed to win a stakes, but did finish third in both the A Gleam Handicap (gr. II) at Hollywood Park, and the Las Flores Handicap (gr. III) at Santa Anita. From five offspring to race, Woodman’s Dancer has produced four winners. Before Archarcharch, her biggest performer was stakes winner Run Sully Run (by Cherokee Run), who earned $167,069. Run Sully Run won or placed in five stakes, including a victory in the Gilded Time Stakes at 51⁄2 furlongs on the turf at Monmouth. Although Woodman’s Dancer had most of her success at short distances, her sire, Woodman, is best known as a source of stamina. Among his 111 stakes winners were several that had an impact on the Triple Crown, including 1991 Belmont Stakes winner Hansel, and 1995 Preakness winner Timber Country. As a broodmare sire, Woodman is responsible for four champions and 66 graded winners. There is also stamina on Woodman’s Dancer’s distaff side, as her dam, Pattern Step (by Nureyev), won the 11⁄8-mile Hollywood Oaks (gr. I) on the dirt at Hollywood Park, and the Providencia Stakes at that same distance on the turf at Santa Anita. Pattern Step produced eight winners in all, including stakes winners Seattle Pattern and Total Bull. Pattern Step is a half sister to nine winners, including stakes winner Master Ace, grade III winner Fast, and group II winner Motley. Their dam, Tipping Time (by Commanding II), won or placed in nine stakes. Archarcharch, the horse so nice they named him thrice, has the pedigree, the stamina, and the consistency to succeed on the first Saturday in May. All he needs now is a little racing luck. ecently pensioned A.P. Indy is arguably the best stallion never to have sired a winner of the Kentucky Derby (gr. I), YET. But if the stars align as the moon enters Cancer on May 7, 2011, his son Astrology just might rectify that. A.P. Indy has been the go-to guy for stamina and class in American pedigrees since the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) and Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I) winner, champion 3-year-old male, Horse of the Year, and two-time leading sire, retired to Lane’s End Farm in 1993. His 136 stakes comprise 26 grade/group I winners, including Preakness Stakes (gr. I) winner Bernardini and Belmont Stakes winner Rags to Riches. Also sprinkled liberally among the highestlevel are winners of the grade I Kentucky Oaks (Secret Status and Rags to Riches), Coaching Club Oaks (Music Note, Jilbab), and Alabama Stakes (Runup the Colors, Sweet Symphony). But, then again, nothing less could be expected for the son of a Triple Crown winner (Seattle Slew) out of a graded stakes-winning daughter of a Triple Crown winner (Secretariat). Could Astrology’s female family be the genetic elixir needed to prime the pump that will end A.P. Indy’s Derby drought? Astrology’s dam Quiet Eclipse wasn’t much of a racehorse, winning only a 51⁄2-furlong maiden race at Fair Grounds as a 4-yearold, but she did earn $42,405 in her 13-race career. While she may have been short on talent as a racehorse, as a broodmare, she has proved a tightly packaged pedigree powerhouse bursting at the genes. Before she produced grade III-winner Astrology, her first three foals, all by speed-oriented sires, had been stakes winners: Lunarpal, a grade III winner by Successful Appeal; and stakeswinning full sisters Lunargal and Lunarlady, by Yes It’s True. What may very well prove to be the dynamo driving this pedigree is the excellent broodmare sire Quiet American, the sire of Quiet Eclipse—or more specifically, the female family of Quiet American. Sired by the atypical Mr. Prospector son Fappiano, Quiet American is one of those rare stallions whose sire and dam descend from the same strong female, and in this case the descent is only a few steps back. Fappiano’s dam, Killaloe, and Quiet American’s dam, Demure, are very closely related. Both are by Dr. Fager out of daughters of Cequillo. But that’s not all from this female family. Cequillo, who produced four stakes winners for Tartan, is herself a granddaughter of Acorn Stakes winner Hostility, who, in turn, is a granddaughter of the great sire producer Plucky Liege through her daughter Marguerite de Valois, a full sister to leading sires Sir Gallahad III and Bull Dog, both significant components of American classic pedigrees. Being a tail-female descendant of the great mare herself, Astrology’s dam brings a third strain of Plucky Liege, albeit through a less star-studded tribe. Like Cequillo, Quiet Eclipse branches from Hostility through Hostility’s stakes-winning daughter Antagonism, an Eight Thirty half sister to Cequillo’s dam Boldness. With that extra kick, Quiet Eclipse not only has a sire with 4x3 inbreeding to the Tartan Farm foundation mare Cequillo, but she herself is inbred 6x6 to Cequillo’s granddam Hostility. Extrapolating the family further in the pedigree, there are 14 instances of Plucky Liege in Quiet Eclipse’s nine-cross pedigree. The A.P. Indy cross with Quiet American mares has already proved a success, yielding the high-class Preakness winner Bernardini, grade II winner A.P. Warrior, and stakes winner Dance Quietly. Tom Hall

Brethren
Trainer: Todd A. Pletcher Owner: WinStar Farm Breeder: WinStar Farm (KY)
n the 136-year history of the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) no single mare has produced two winners. However, judging by the performance of Brethren, the half brother to 2010 Derby hero Super Saver, in the Sam F. Davis Stakes (gr. III) Feb. 12, it is at least a possibility the feat could be achieved this year. Of course, Brethren is going to have to overcome some considerably tougher opposition and run significantly faster than he did in the Sam Davis, if he is to gain classic laurels. It was, however, hard not to be taken with the ease in which he attained his four-length triumph. It should also be remembered that Brethren was making only the third start of his career, and the first of this year, having won a sixfurlong maiden at Belmont Park last October, and a mile allowance at Churchill Downs in November. In addition, it shouldn’t be overlooked that Brethren is a son of Distorted Humor, a horse whose offspring frequently begin to make more than average progress around this time of year. It was just over 12 months ago we featured a group of lightlyraced Distorted Humor prospects we thought had a bright future. One of these, Drosselmeyer, who runs in the same colors as Brethren, subsequently captured the Belmont Stakes (gr. I); two more, Colizeo and Endorsement (another in the same ownership as Brethren) won graded stakes; and Age of Humor, Funny Feeling, and Bank the Eight all took black-type events. Of course, Distorted Humor has been one of the great stallion success stories of the last decade or so, starting at a modest initial stud fee, but siring Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner Funny Cide in his first crop, with his other stars including Flower Alley, Hystericalady, Commentator, Awesome Humor, Fourty Niners Son, Bit of Whimsy, Pathfork (a European classic hopeful for 2011), and Regal Ransom. If it falls to Supercharger, the dam of Super Saver and Brethren, to become a history-making mare, pedigree aficionados will be able to find plenty of satisfaction in both the quality of the bloodlines and the pattern in which they are arranged. Bred by Ogden Mills Phipps, Supersaver won three times, and produced three foals in seven years, before being consigned to the 2006 Keeneland November sale, where she was purchased by WinStar for $160,000, carrying Super Saver. Ironically, for all their long history of success, the Phipps family have never been represented by a Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner, and the horse they bred named Hedge Fund, by Super Saver’s sire Maria’s Mon out of Supercharger, proved to be no better than a hard-knocking runner grinding out $160,699 with five wins from 57 starts between the ages of 4 and 7. A daughter of A.P. Indy, Supercharger is a sister to the 2010 Vosburgh Stakes (gr. I) victor, Girolamo, and to the graded scorers Daydream-

ing and Accelerator, both of whom were also grade I-placed. More significantly as far as the Triple Crown is concerned, Supercharger is also a sister to She’s A Winner, the dam of Bluegrass Cat. A son of Storm Cat, and like Super Saver and Brethren, bred by WinStar and trained by Todd Pletcher, Bluegrass Cat won the Nashua Stakes (gr. III) and Remsen Stakes (gr. II) at 2, and the Sam F. Davis and Haskell Invitational Stakes (gr. I) at 3, and was runner-up in the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes. Now standing at WinStar, Bluegrass Cat has made a promising start to his career and was one of the leading freshman sires of 2010. Supercharger’s dam, Get Lucky, is a graded stakes-winning daughter of Mr. Prospector, and a sister to 1989 champion 2-yearold and Travers Stakes (gr. I) winner Rhythm. She’s also a sister to stakes-placed Not For Love, subsequently an outstanding sire in Maryland, and a half sister to Oscillate (by A.P. Indy’s sire, Seattle Slew), the dam of group winner and useful sire Mutakddim, and granddam of the Suburban Handicap (gr. I) scorer Frost Giant. The second dam of Supercharger is the beautifully bred Dance Number, a daughter of Northern Dancer and Buckpasser’s 1971 champion 2-year-old filly Numbered Account. As we’ve seen, Dance Number was an excellent producer, and earlier she had lived up to her pedigree at the track winning the Beldame Stakes (gr. I), Shuvee Handicap (gr. II)—while equaling a track record for 8½ furlongs—the Dark Mirage Stakes, and the High Voltage Stakes, equaling a track-record for 6½ furlongs. Dance Number was also a half sister to Private Account, winner of the Gulfstream Park Handicap (gr. I) and Widener Handicap (gr. I), and an excellent sire, including of the undefeated champion Personal Ensign. In direct female line, the family traces to perhaps the most revered of all modern taproot mares, La Troienne. However, here the La Troienne influence goes significantly beyond the tail-female line. A look at the pedigree of Numbered Account shows the closely related Busanda (dam of Buckpasser) and Striking—both by War Admiral out of daughters of La Troienne—2 x 3. The next two sires in the female line, Northern Dancer and Mr. Prospector didn’t add to the La Troienne background, but the mating with A.P. Indy certainly did, as he is by Seattle Slew (dam inbred to the sisters Busher and Striking, Striking also being the sixth dam of Supercharger) with a second dam by Buckpasser, and as a consequence Supercharger has War Admiral/La Troienne combinations through Busher, Striking and Busanda 6x6x5x5x6 in her pedigree. It is doubtful it escaped the WinStar team that Maria’s Mon (the sire of Super Saver, who, as we have said, was in utero at the time) was by Wavering Monarch, a horse whose dam is by Buckpasser and also inbred to La Troienne. Additionally, there is little doubt that the mare would also have struck as an ideal mate for WinStar’s lead stallion, Distorted Humor. With Funny Cide (dam by Slewacide, by Seattle Slew out of a Buckpasser mare) in his first crop, Distorted Humor rapidly demonstrated a potential genetic affinity for the influence of Seattle Slew, and events have proved that that was not a false lead. Distorted Humor has sired four stakes winners from 17 starters (23.5%) out of mares by Seattle Slew himself, and nine stakes winners from 57 starters (15.8%) out of mares by sons of Seattle Slew. At the time of Supercharger’s purchase, there had yet to be a stakes winner for the Distorted Humor/A.P. Indy cross, but the merits of the nick have been well-advertised by one of the first runners on the cross, Any Given Saturday, who had recently run a very promising second in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (gr. II). Any Given Saturday didn’t win a classic, but after gaining his first stakes win in the Sam F Davis Stakes—a race that is becoming a recurring theme here—he did add the Dwyer Stakes (gr. II), Brooklyn Handicap (gr. II), and Haskell Invitational Handicap, over Hard Spun and Curlin. The Distorted Humor/A.P. Indy cross has now produced five stakes winners from 27 starters (18.5%), Any Given Saturday and Brethren being joined by Endorsement and Z Humor as graded winners on the cross. In addition to being bred on a proven nick (it rates A+ on TrueNicks), Brethren also has some interesting inbreeding in his pedigree as Distorted Humor is by a son of Mr. Prospector out of a mare by a son of Northern Dancer, and his granddam, Get Lucky, is by Mr. Prospector out of a Northern Dancer mare. olonel E. R. Bradley, the famous gambler and Thoroughbred breeder, has been quoted as saying that he would gladly bet any horse that showed the ability to turn in a final quarter in :24 or less in a route race. If so, he would have loved Brilliant Speed’s finish in the Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I). Unhurried early, the Live Oak Stud homebred ran his final three-eighths in the neighborhood of :343⁄5 to nail Twinspired on the line. Such a turn of foot is not that uncommon among top turfers, and until recently, it seemed as though turf racing would be Brilliant Speed’s forte. After two lackluster efforts in maiden races on dirt at Belmont and Saratoga, Brilliant Speed moved to grass for his next five starts and was not out of the money in any of them. His last two efforts on turf netted him placings in stakes company, both in tight finishes and after less than ideal trips. The Blue Grass, of course, is on Keeneland’s Polytrack surface, so Brilliant Speed’s ability to translate his best form to the dirt at Churchill Downs remains a major question. Still, it is too soon to write Brilliant Speed off as a horse that cannot handle dirt. Both of his dirt starts were at sprint distances, and in both he is noted in the charts as having raced greenly after slow starts. And on pedigree, the colt has at least the possibility of making the transition. Brilliant Speed is the 21st grade/group I winner for Dynaformer, one of the best sires of stamina in the American market and a horse that has gotten top runners on both turf and dirt, with 122 stakes winners to his credit so far. While the big son of Roberto is nearing the end of his stud career, he continues to get classy runners as another member of his 2008 crop is White Moonstone, undefeated winner of the 2010 Meon Valley Stud Fillies’ Mile Stakes (Eng-I) and two other English group events as a juvenile. Brilliant Speed is, in fact, rather similarly bred to White Moonstone, as both are products of mares by sons of Mr. Prospector out of Northern Dancer-line mares. Both dams also feature Buckpasser in the third generations of their pedigrees, though in different positions: The four-time leading broodmare sire appears as the broodmare sire of Seeking the Gold, whose daughter Desert Gold produced White Moonstone, and as

the sire of Passing Mood, third dam of Brilliant Speed. Produced from 1969 Canadian Oaks winner Cool Mood (by Northern Dancer), Passing Mood is part of an important Canadian family that has enjoyed marked success on both sides of the U.S.–Canadian border. She is a half sister to unraced Shy Spirit (by Personality), whose four stakes winners include the ill-fated 1990 Canadian Triple Crown winner Izvestia, a grade II winner in the U.S. before suffering a fatal breakdown as a 4-year-old, and the good Canadian sprinter Key Spirit (by Key to the Mint), winner of the 1991 Philadelphia Park Breeders’ Cup Handicap (gr. III). Shy Spirit also produced stakes-placed Playful Spirit (by Bold Hour), dam of 1992 Mazarine Stakes (gr. III) winner Play All Day (by Steady Growth). Play All Day, in turn, has produced 1998 Santa Anita Oaks (gr. I) winner Hedonist (by Alydeed), 1998 Coronation Futurity winner Zaha (by Kingmambo), and 2002 Brooklyn Handicap (gr. II) winner Seeking Daylight (by Seeking the Gold). A stakes winner at 2, Passing Mood went her half sister one better with five stakes winners, two of very high caliber indeed: 1989 Canadian Triple Crown winner With Approval (by Caro), and 1997 Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Touch Gold (by Deputy Minister). Another of her stakes winners, Touch Gold’s full sister Daijin, is herself the dam of the stakes-winning A.P. Indy fillies Handpainted (whose Seeking the Gold colt Patena won the 2008 Display Stakes) and Serenading, and of unraced Speed Succeeds (by Gone West), dam of Brilliant Speed. Both Izvestia and With Approval showed high-class ability on dirt but were better on the grass, perhaps foreshadowing where Brilliant Speed’s greatest ability lies. On the other hand, Touch Gold was a dual grade I winner on dirt, and both Handpainted and Serenading were stakes winners on that surface. Based on his pedigree, he was sent to stud and has stood his entire career at Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds in Central Florida. His fee for 2011 is $5,000. A son of Storm Cat, With Distinction is out of the unraced Alydar mare Extravagant Woman. Alydar, second to Affirmed in all three legs of the Triple Crown in 1978, instills classic potential to a pedigree, as does a dose of Secretariat, the broodmare sire of Storm Cat. Extravagant Woman is out of Squander, the winner of the 1976 Sorority Stakes (gr. I) for Ogden Mills Phipps. A half sister to Diana Handicap (gr. IIT) winner Duty Dance, Squander is out of Wheatley Stable’s Discipline, winner of three stakes that now have graded status. A catalog page of the Jean Laffite winner won’t have your hands black with ink, but his female family does have a smattering of stakes class, although mainly one-turn successes. Decisive Moment’s second dam, Tell Margie, won the five-furlong Mill Race Handicap in the summer of 1993 at Philadelphia Park. Tell Margie is a daughter of Talc, a long-time leading sire in New York throughout the 1990s. The Maryland-bred son of Rock Talk (a great grandson of Hyperion) won eight stakes including the Cheasapeake Handicap (gr. III) at the old Bowie track and a division of the Kent Stakes (gr. III) at Delaware Park in 1975. He sired 25 stakes winners including early ’90s New York graded stakes winners Argyle Lake, Lottsa Talc, and Farmonthefreeway. Li’l Puss, the fourth dam of Decisive Moment, placed in the Colleen Stakes at 2 at Monmouth Park and is the dam of 1980 San Clemente Stakes winner Plenty O’Toole (by Raise a Cup). Plenty O’Toole ran third going 11⁄4 miles in the 1982 Santa Barbara Handicap (gr. IT). owner William Farish along with Madeleine Pickens and Skara Glen Stables, Dialed In is the second grade I winner for his sire but is very different from the first, Discreetly Mine. Although Discreetly Mine stayed well enough to win the 2010 Risen Star Stakes (gr. II) over 8½ furlongs in a front-running performance, his forte was speed, with his biggest win coming in the seven-furlong King’s Bishop Stakes (gr. I). Dialed In, on the other hand, depends on a strong closing run to get the job done and apparently has more of a liking for distance. The respective aptitudes of the two colts seem a bit surprising, given that Discreetly Mine is out of Alabama Stakes (gr. I) winner Pretty Discreet while Dialed In is out of grade II-placed Miss Doolittle, who raced only in sprints. Pretty Discreet, however, was quick enough to be grade I-placed twice at 2 and benefitted from a sloppy track (which she relished) in the Alabama, rolling to a front-running win in what was by far the best performance of her career. As her other foals include the brilliant miler Discreet Cat, it would seem that her progeny reflected rather than diverged from her true proclivities. Miss Doolittle, on the other hand, was never tried at longer distances, though she had two half siblings (both by the staying Theatrical) who were winners at nine furlongs or more and, indeed, needed a route to win at all. As a daughter of Storm Cat out of 1992 champion juvenile filly Eliza, by the sprinting Mt. Livermore, Miss Doolittle looked like a miler on paper. Eliza, though, was effective enough over nine furlongs to place in the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) behind the high-class filly Dispute and in the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) against males; further, her half brother Dinard (by Strawberry Road) won the 1991 Santa Anita Derby. Nor can Mt. Livermore be dismissed as a pure speed influence as he sired a number of horses that could handle nine or 10 furlongs well, headed by Canadian Horses of the Year Peaks and Valleys (1995) and Mt. Sassafras (1996). Daring Bidder, the dam of Eliza, never raced but is a daughter of 1966 co-champion handicap male Bold Bidder, a winner of several major stakes at 10 furlongs and sire of Kentucky Derby winners Cannonade (1974) and Spectacular Bid (1979). “The Bid,” also the winner of the Preakness Stakes, is still widely regarded as the best horse ever to complete the Derby-Preakness double without sweeping the Triple Crown, winning 26 of his 30 starts and earning championship titles every year he raced. Daring Bidder was produced from the Prince Dare mare Daring Step, one of four stakes winners produced by the Air Hero mare Step Daughter from matings to a series of modest sires. None were top-class runners, but considering that Step Daughter was unraced, that she was by an indifferent sire, and that her dam, her granddam, and her greatgranddam were all undistinguished as both runners and producers, her broodmare career was nothing short of exceptional. In earlier days, Step Daughter’s family (a branch of Bruce Lowe Family 37) had produced 1884 Preakness Stakes winner Knight of Ellerslie and the good handicap horse Eon. While the distaff side of Dialed In’s pedigree can be said to represent a renaissance for his female family, his sire Mineshaft combines some of the most fashionable—and talented—strains of the 20th century. Sired by 1992 Horse of the Year and subsequent leading sire A.P. Indy, Mineshaft is the best of five stakes winners from five named foals produced by multiple grade I winner Prospectors Delite (by Mr. Prospector). Prospectors Delite, in turn, is one of seven stakes winners (three of grade/group I stature) produced from the Hoist the Flag mare Up the Flagpole, a winner of the Delaware Oaks (gr. II). The female line is a flourishing branch of the great La Troienne family descended from Striking, a stakes-winning full sister to 1945 Horse of the Year Busher and to Mr. Busher, rated the second best juvenile male of 1948 in a career cut short by injury. After winning four grade I races and Horse of the Year honors in 2003, Mineshaft got off to a slower than expected start at stud but appears to be gaining momentum, with 20 stakes winners having emerged from the 304 named foals of his first four crops of racing age. While his progeny so far have not stayed quite as well as those of his sire, he is the sire of 2010 Belmont Stakes (gr. I) runner-up Fly Down and Hawthorne Gold Cup Handicap (gr. II) winner Redding Colliery, so he is certainly capable of getting a horse capable of staying 10 furlongs. Whether Dialed In can get that trip has yet to be seen, and his closing style is vulnerable to both lack of pace and traffic problems. But he has developed into a worthy contender for this year’s classics, and that is all anyone can ask at this stage of the game. Avalyn Hunter

Trainer: Bob Baffert Owner: Zayat Stables Breeder: Runnymede Farm Inc. & Catesby W. Clay (KY)
unnymede Farm is one of the country’s oldest Thoroughbred nurseries, and may well be the oldest to remain in the same family throughout its history. Founded by Colonel Ezekiel Clay in 1867 on land purchased for him by his father, Brutus Clay, near Paris, Ky., the farm has been owned by four generations of Clays. It is the birthplace of Kentucky Derby winners Ben Brush (1896), Agile (1905), and Count Turf (1951) (though the last-named was bred while the farm was under lease to Dr. Porter Miller). It is also the birthplace of four members of the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame: the aforementioned Ben Brush, Hanover, Miss Woodford, and Roamer. Current owner Catesby W. Clay is one of the grand old men of Kentucky racing and breeding, having been born in 1923. He has kept up the family tradition of breeding fine horses quite honorably, being responsible (alone or in partnership) for 2001 Japanese champion older male Agnes Digital and grade/group I winners Marylebone, Palace Episode, and Divine Park. But he has never bred a Kentucky Derby winner or a horse considered worthy of the Hall of Fame. Whether Runnymede-bred Jaycito will get so far is anyone’s guess, but after winning October 2 in the Norfolk Stakes (gr. I), he was certain to get a shot at further glory. The runner-up in his first two starts, the Zayat Stables color bearer broke both his maiden and Del Mar Futurity (gr. I) winner J P’s Gusto’s four-race winning streak at the same time, outdueling his rival in the manner of a colt with both heart and stamina. He would later finish second in the San Felipe Stakes (gr. II) at 11⁄16 miles behind Premier Pegasus. Both colts were favorites in the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) but were both scratched due to injury. As a son of 1998 Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Victory Gallop, Jaycito comes by staying power quite honestly. Not only was Victory Gallop also runner-up to Real Quiet in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes (both gr. I), but he earned a title as champion older male the following year with wins in the Whitney Handicap (gr. I) and Stephen Foster Handicap (gr. II) and a third in the Dubai World Cup (UAE-I). Although Victory Gallop is well enough bred, being by Cryptoclearance out of the stakes-winning Vice Regent mare Victorious Lil, he

was never a particularly fashionable stallion and ended up being sent to Turkey in 2008. His eight American-born crops have so far yielded 39 stakes winners from 550 foals aged 3 or older, including graded stakes winners Anak Nakal, Kettleoneup, Rendezvous, Texas Fever, and Victory U. S. A. Jaycito is the second foal and second winner from his dam Night Edition, who was bred by Maria Ann Sansalone in partnership with Canada’s venerable Windfields Farm. Her sire, Ascot Knight (Danzig–Bambee T. T., by Better Bee), was a decent but not outstanding racer, winning the Mecca Bookmakers’ Scottish Derby at 3 and placing in several English group events. His racing ability plus his status as a full brother to 1994 Gran Premio di Milano winner (Ity-I) and multiple Spanish champion Petit Loup and a half brother to 1984 Canadian champion turf horse Bounding Away (by Vice Regent) was enough to earn him a reasonable shot at stud in Ontario. There, he enjoyed a stud career more or less on a par with his racing career until his pensioning in 2008, siring 33 stakes winners so far from 698 foals aged 3-plus. His best runners are 1994 Canadian champion older female Pennyhill Park, Caesars International Handicap and Man o’War Stakes (both gr. IT) winner Influent, and Derby Italiano (Ity-I) winner Bahamian Knight. A half sister to Canadian restricted stakes winner G S T Blues (by the Hold Your Peace stallion Pax Nobiscum), Night Edition is out of Lydia Star, an unraced daughter of the Lyphard horse Lydian. Winner of the 1981 Gran Premio di Milano (Ity-I) and Grosser Preis von Berlin (Ger-I), Lydian was the best of five stakes winners produced from Miss Manon, by 1966 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Bon Mot. He was not a particularly successful sire, getting 11 stakes winners from 199 foals, and has been if anything less effective as a broodmare sire, his daughters so far having produced just 10 stakes winners from 268 foals born in 2007 or earlier. Jaycito’s family traces back to 1925 champion juvenile filly Friar’s Carse through her stakes-winning daughter Speed Boat (by Man o’ War), a full sister to War Relic. The dam of 1940 champion juvenile filly Level Best, winner of the 1941 Coaching Club American Oaks, Speed Boat heads a family that includes 1953 Jockey Club Gold Cup winner Level Lea, 1959 Belmont Stakes winner and Horse of the Year Sword Dancer, 1965 Belmont Stakes winner Hail to All, and 1975 Kentucky Oaks winner Sun and Snow. With multiple stamina sources on the top and bottom, Jaycito appears unlikely to have any trouble getting longer distances. A more immediate question may be how well he handles the transition to the dirt at Churchill Downs, which will host not only this year’s Breeders’ Cup but the colt’s probable long-term target, the 2011 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I). But on pedigree, at least, Jaycito will be one to watch as this crop continues to mature. Avalyn Hunter

J P’s gusto

fter an eighth-place finish in the Arkansas Derby (gr. I), J P’s Gusto still has enough in graded earnings to have a good chance of making the field for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I). The question is whether he actually should go. There is no doubt that the Gem Stable colorbearer has talent, but whether he can carry that talent 10 furlongs seems doubtful after a series of performances that suggest otherwise. On pedigree, it does not seem likely that stamina will magically emerge by Derby Day. Bred by WinStar Farm, J P’s Gusto is by Successful Appeal, a very good sprinter-miler but one with no pretenses of staying beyond a mile despite being out of a full sister to Suave Prospect, who was nipped by inches in Thunder Gulch’s Florida Derby (gr. I). Within his limit, however, the son of Valid Appeal was a game and consistent competitor. His stud career has been equally good without quite reaching the top level since he led the freshman sire list in 2004; from the 379 foals of his first seven crops, he has sired 230 winners (60.1%) and 33 stakes winners (8.7%) to date. Closing Argument, a member of Successful Appeal’s first crop, ran a surprising second in the 2005 Kentucky Derby despite being hung wide for the entire trip, failing to stave off Giacomo’s closing run by just a half-length. Since then, others of Successful Appeal’s progeny have demonstrated the ability to win at nine furlongs or more in stakes company, but most have been sprinter-milers like their sire, a fact reflected in his progeny’s average winning distance of 6.69 furlongs. On the distaff side, J P’s Gusto is descended from Double Time, whose family includes Cryptoclearance, Middle Brother, and Princessnesian, all quite adept over 10 furlongs or more. The branch that produced these horses, however, was repeatedly crossed with stamina-oriented sires such as Hoist the Flag, Hill Prince, and Princequillo. While Great Circle, the sire of the fourth dam of J P’s Gusto, won at up to 13 furlongs, the ancestors closer up on the dam’s side of J P’s Gusto’s pedigree are not of such stout stuff. The dam of J P’s Gusto, Call Her Magic, won at up to a mile but recorded both her stakes wins in fivefurlong turf sprints, while her dam, Malibu Magic, scored both her wins in sprints. The sire of Call Her Magic, Caller I. D., won the one-mile Arlington-Washington Futurity (gr. I) as a juvenile but, like his sire and grandsire (Phone Trick and Clever Trick, respectively) proved mostly an influence for speed as a sire. There is no disgrace at all in being a fine sprinter-miler, and on pedigree and performance to date, this appears to be the likeliest niche for J P’s Gusto. Given his dam’s talent on the grass, it’s also possible that he may have a future on turf as well, which would widen the options for his connections. But if he goes into the starting gate for the Derby, it will be as one of the longshots and for good reason. Avalyn Hunter

he dogged determination that Master of Hounds showed through the stretch of the U.A.E. Derby Sponsored by the Saeed & Mohammed Al Naboodah Group (UAE-II) in his first start of the year certainly hints of better things to come. Should his connections decide to ship him to the American classics, he just may very well be in the hunt. While Master of Hounds has yet to find the winner’s circle in stakes competition, he is nevertheless, group I-placed, having finished third in the Racing Post Trophy (Eng-III) as a 2-year-old. With his pedigree and his ability, plus the classic foundation provided by his Ballydoyle upbringing, it’s only a matter of time. Distance, however, may be a problem. Europe has classic races at a mile; the U.S. does not. So will the 10 furlongs of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) be a bit beyond his liking? Will he be more suited to the shorter distance of the Preakness? A review of his pedigree yields some clues. Master of Hounds is by Mr. Prospector’s classic-winning son Kingmambo, who won three group Is at a mile. Nothing out of the ordinary in that as his dam Miesque was champion miler in England and France as well as two-time champion turf female in U.S. thanks to back-to back wins in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (gr. IT). His dam, group II winner Silk And Scarlet, is a Juddmonte-bred daughter of the modern-day icon of classic sires Sadler’s Wells, a classic winner himself having taken the Airlie Coolmore Irish Two Thousand Guineas (Ire-I) at a mile. Kingmambo over Sadler’s Wells, there are miles of history in such a pedigree. Kingmambo has sired 88 stakes winners, nine (10.2%) have been produced from Sadler’s Wells mares, pretty good numbers. But, there’s more than just good quantity. Of those nine, two-thirds are group I winners and one-third, classic winners: Divine Proportions (French One Thousand Guineas and French Oaks), Henrythenavigator (English and Irish Two Thousand Guineas, and Virginia Waters (English One Thousand Guineas). However, of those classic victories, only the French Oaks distance is more than a mile. Silk and Scarlet’s group II win came at 2 in the Robert H. Griffin Debutante Stakes over seven furlongs at The Curragh. Her attempt at the classics resulted in a well-beaten fourth-place finish behind Divine Proportions in the 2005 French One Thousand Guineas. While Silk And Scarlet’s dam, Danilova, was unraced, she is a daughter of champion sire Lyphard, whose best win came in the eight-furlong Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville. While the mile has been the predominant theme in the first two generations of Master of Hound’s pedigree, Danilova’s distance-loving dam Ballinderry provides some female-family stamina. A winner of the Ribblesdale Stakes (Eng.-II) at 12 furlongs during the Royal Ascot meet in 1984, the blazed-faced chestnut daughter of champion miler Irish River also produced Sanglamore, who won the classic French Derby at 12-furlongs. Ballinderry is one of five stakes winners produced by Miss Manon, a stakes-winning daughter of Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Bon Mot and the stakes-placed Miss Molly, a daughter of Arc winner Molvedo whose sire Ribot also won the Arc. he second weekend of April was a bad one for favorites on the Triple Crown trail. In New York, Uncle Mo, long-time market-leader in Derby betting and odds-on for the Resorts World New York Casino Wood Memorial Stakes (gr. I), could do no better than third. Meanwhile on the West Coast, the $1 million Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) lost Premier Pegasus, the early first choice, with a hairline fracture of a cannon bone discovered a couple of days before the race, and then trainer Bob Baffert was forced to scratch morning line favorite Jaycito due to a foot-bruise. However, the Baffert bench is deep this year—he also has a potential Derby Day favorite in The Factor, who was not a final factor in the Arkansas Derby (gr. I), finishing seventh in the nine-furlong race—and he found a capable replacement for Jaycito in the shape of Midnight Interlude. A lightly-raced Arnold Zetcher homebred, Midnight Interlude was making only the fourth start of his career in the Santa Anita Derby. Unraced at 2, he was third in a six-furlong Santa Anita maiden on his debut, then second in a similar event over a mile. On his only other outing prior to the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I), Midnight Interlude gained an impressive 8½-length victory in a one mile maiden run over a wet-fast track. Although Midnight Interlude still showed some signs of greenness in his stakes debut, he was good enough to run down grade I winner Comma to the Top in the final strides after making a four-wide move on the turn. If the day was a bad one for favorites, it was a good one indeed for the Danzig line, which is already well represented this year by secondcrop sire War Front (who has a pair of Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) hopefuls in The Factor and Soldat from his first crop) as the Wood fell to Toby’s Corner, who is from the first crop of Bellamy Road (by Concerto, a son of Danzig’s juvenile champion Chief’s Crown), and Midnight Interlude is by Danzig’s son War Chant. War Chant himself was a one-time classic contender. A winner in his only start at 2, he prepared for the Triple Crown at 3 at Santa Anita. Following a January allowance win, War Chant gained his first graded victory in the San Rafael Stakes (gr. II). Second in his Santa Anita Derby challenge, War Chant took his chance at Churchill Downs but could do no better than ninth behind Fusaichi Pegasus. Following the Derby, War Chant was away from the races until mid-October, when he reappeared on the turf to capture the Oak Tree Mile (gr. IIT), in a quick 1:33.75. He made the final start of his career three weeks later in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (gr. IT) and triumphed over a field that included Affirmed Success, Dansili, North East Bound, Muhtathir, and Forbidden Apple. With looks to match his pedigree—he was not only by Danzig, but also out of champion 3-year-old filly Hollywood Wildcat—and racerecord, War Chant retired to stand at Three Chimneys Farm at an initial

fee of $75,000. War Chant hasn’t quite fulfilled the highest expectations—something borne out by his 2011 stud fee of $12,500—but he has been a steady sire of stakes winners, with 28, including 14 group/graded scorers, from his first seven crops. In addition to Midnight Interlude he has also been most notably represented by Kingsfort, a group I winner in Ireland at 2; last year’s Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (gr. IIT) victor Chamberlain Bridge; and graded or group scorers Brilliant, War Kill, Karen’s Caper, Chattahoochee War, Sea Chanter, Ballymore Lady, Norman Invader, El Roblar, and Asperity. Not only is Midnight Interlude War Chant’s first U.S. grade I scorer (aside from the jumper Pierrot Lunaire), but he is also the sire’s first graded winner on natural dirt, an achievement that couldn’t have been predicted from the distaff side of Midnight Interlude’s pedigree. His dam, Midnight Kiss, is by the European-raced Blushing Groom horse Groom Dancer. Best at around 10 furlongs and blessed with a very sharp turn of foot, Groom Dancer was a black type winner in France at 2, 3, and 4, his most prestigious victory being a Prix Lupin (Fr-I) tally over Trempolino, who was to take the Trusthouse Forte Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Fr-I) later that year. Groom Dancer went on to a solid career as a sire, getting 41 stakes winners, including the Derby Italiano (Ity-I) captor Groom Tesse, other group or grade I winners Lord of Men, Sphenophyta, Deauville, and Le Balafre, and the English sprint highweight Pursuit of Love. He’s broodmare sire of 50 stakes winners, including other group/grade I winners Rouvres, Tout Seul, and Beckett. Midnight Interlude’s dam, Midnight Kiss, was conceived on a shuttle sojourn to New Zealand. She ran just four times, winning a maiden over 9½ furlongs and an allowance race at around 11 furlongs, and ended her career with a good third in the New Zealand Oaks (NZ-I), run over 2,400 meters. the metric equivalent of 1½ miles. Midnight Kiss has spent her entire stud career in the U.S., and has one previous winner, the Point Given filly Prime Kiss, from her first three foals. Midnight Kiss’s dam, Midnight Assembly, is by Night Shift—a brother to Fanfreluche—who stood in the U.S., England, Ireland, and Australia, and was a successful sire especially with his European runners. Midnight Assembly never ran, but was half sister to Or Acier, highweighted 3-year-old sprinter in Italy, and to the dams of the minor stakes winner Fit the Script and Stoneyer, a champion at 2 and 3 in Puerto Rico. The third dam, the unraced Secretariat daughter Secorissa, was a sister to the Bed o’ Roses Handicap (gr. III) winner Who’s to Answer and half sister to Slip Screen, who was successful in the Long Island Handicap (gr. III), and to Bemis Heights, winner of the Ruthless Stakes (gr. III). Bemis Heights’ Nijinsky II daughter, Bemissed, won the Selima Stakes (gr. I) and subsequently produced the Vaguely Noble filly Jet Ski Lady, a runaway 10-length winner of the 1991 Gold Seal Epsom Oaks (Eng-I). Bred to Blushing Groom, the grandsire of Midnight Kiss, Bemis Heights also produced Desert Team, who took the Princess of Wales’s Stakes (Eng-II). Secorissa’s dam, Orissa, had an intriguing pedigree, as she was by juvenile champion First Landing, out of stakes winner Salt Lake, a daughter of Horse the Year Hill Prince, a half brother to First Landing, and thus inbred 2x3 to the notable mare Hildene. Since Hill Prince was by Princequillo, and Salt Lake was out of Yarmouth, Salt Lake was closely related to another Horse of the Year, Round Table, who was by Princequillo out of Yarmouth’s dam, Knight’s Daughter. Midnight Interlude (TrueNicks-rated A++) is bred on a cross that has proved fruitful, that of War Chant over Blushing Groom-line mares. The cross has been represented by only 17 starters but has produced four stakes winners and a total of six stakes horses (better than 35% stakes horses to starters). It’s also worth mentioning that the combination of Northern Dancer through Danzig and Night Shift found here already appears in 23 stakes winners, 10 graded. With a view to Midnight Interlude’s stamina potential, it’s encouraging that the averaging winning distance for colts bred on the War Chant/Blushing Groom cross is in excess of nine furlongs, as shown on the TrueNicks Enhanced report for this cross. Given that Midnight Interlude’s dam was classic-placed over 1½ miles, it would be a surprise if Midnight Interlude has any problems with the Derby trip. In view of his background, it will also be no surprise if he tries the turf at sometime in the future. Alan Porter

y the standards of the modern Triple Crown trail, Mucho Macho Man is already a seasoned veteran. The bay colt has raced seven times so far, four times in stakes company, and has been out of the money only once. He has also proved tough by today’s standards: Just 20 days after finishing fourth in the Holy Bull Stakes (gr. III), he ran a winning race in the Risen Star Stakes (gr. II) to push himself into the classic picture. Whether Mucho Macho Man, who races for Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and Dream Team One Racing Stable, is up to taking on the best of his division is still an open question. Certainly, he has faced off with a couple of tigers—To Honor and Serve and the highly promising Dialed In—in his previous stakes efforts without being disgraced. He may have been facing weaker competition in the Risen Star, but another factor may have been having the blinkers taken off. His performance in the Risen Star was unquestionably his best yet and should set him up well for a crack at the Louisiana Derby (gr. II) or another major Triple Crown prep. Bred by John D. and Carole A. Rio, Mucho Macho Man was foaled in Florida, which has been the primary home of his male line—that of 1898 Kentucky Derby winner Plaudit—since the mid-1950s, when Plaudit’s sixth-generation descendant, Rough’n Tumble, came to Joseph O’Farrell’s Ocala Stud after having served one season in Maryland. The winner of the 1951 Santa Anita Derby, Rough’n Tumble was one of the better-performing young stallions to come to Florida, and he quickly repaid O’Farrell’s faith in him by siring 1959 Kentucky Oaks winner Wedlock in his first Florida-sired crop and 1959 U.S. champion juvenile filly My Dear Girl in his second. My Dear Girl, of course, went on to produce In Reality, another great name in Florida breeding. The horse that really put both Rough’n Tumble and Florida on the map, however, was Rough’n Tumble’s 1964 son out of Aspidistra. Named Dr. Fager, the wickedly fast bay colt earned five American championships including the 1968 Horse of the Year title. Retired to his birthplace, William McKnight’s Tartan Farm, Dr. Fager proved a fine stallion but died at age 12, earning a posthumous title as American champion sire in 1977. None of Dr. Fager’s sons proved able to succeed him, but another Tartan-bred son of Rough’n Tumble, Minnesota Mac, successfully carried on the line through his son Great Above, who was Tartan-bred

on both sides as his dam was Dr. Fager’s champion half sister Ta Wee (by Intentionally). A decent stallion while standing at various Florida farms, Great Above begot 39 stakes winners among his 618 foals, but by far the best as both a runner and a sire is 1994 Horse of the Year Holy Bull. After suffering a career-ending tendon injury in the 1995 Donn Handicap (gr. I), Holy Bull retired to Jonabell Farm near Lexington, making him the first member of his sire line in four generations to stand outside of Florida. (He now stands under the ownership of Darley.) A complete outcross to all the major American sire lines, Holy Bull has not been as brilliant a sire as he was a racehorse but has certainly had his moments. As of April 22, he has sired 44 stakes winners. Among them are 2005 Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner Giacomo and grade I winners Flashy Bull, Confessional, Bishop Court Hill, and Pohave. The best of Holy Bull’s progeny to date has been Macho Uno, the sire of Mucho Macho Man, whose victory by a desperate nose over Point Given in the 2000 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (gr. I) landed him a title as U.S. champion juvenile male. The colt went on to graded stakes wins at both 3 and 4 before retiring to Adena Springs South, once again returning the Plaudit male line to Florida. (Macho Uno moved to Adena Springs Kentucky in 2008.) A half brother to 1998 Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I) winner Awesome Again, Macho Uno has a third-generation cross of Mr. Prospector in his pedigree but is free of Northern Dancer, Seattle Slew, Hail to Reason, and In Reality, making him a potentially valuable outcross sire for most of the American mare population. So far, he has been an inconsistent stallion, getting 145 winners and 14 stakes winners (including grade I winners Macho Again and Wicked Style) from 283 foals of racing age. The distaff side of Mucho Macho Man’s pedigree is perhaps less familiar. He is the second foal and the first winner for the Ponche mare Ponche de Leona, who took the listed Anoakia Stakes as a juvenile in 2001. She is one of just five stakes winners sired by Ponche (by Two Punch, by Mr. Prospector), who won three stakes races as a 6-year-old in 1995 and was graded-placed at 4, and is the first of his daughters to produce a stakes winner. At that, Ponche de Leona is a distinct step up from her dam Perfect and Proud, whose sire Nonparrell (by Hoist the Flag) was a good juvenile in Canada but begot just three stakes winners from 168 foals as a sire. A winner of just one of her 19 starts, Perfect and Proud was produced from the non-winning Proudest Roman mare Proud Sal, whose dam Gal Sal (by Blasting Signal) won the 1975 Clipsetta Stakes at 2. The family traces back to Sun Mixa, also the ancestress of Darby Dan foundation mare Golden Trail and her many excellent descendants, but Mucho Macho Man’s branch of the family has been far less successful. Still, regardless of the class of his immediate antecedents, the colt looks to be a useful sort who is improving at the right time. Whether that improvement will be enough to carry him into the upper echelons of this year’s sophomores is a question only time can answer. Avalyn Hunter

ehro gained supporters on the way to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) when he rallied to finish second in the Arkansas Derby (gr. I) at Oaklawn Park April 16. One person who got an extra special kick out of the performance was William S. Farish, who stands the colt’s sire, Mineshaft, at his Lane’s End Farm near Versailles, Ky. “The way he’s finishing, he’s got a terrific shot in the classics,” Farish said. “He’s running like a Derby horse.” Nehro’s closing effort in the Arkansas Derby was no fluke. In Nehro’s maiden score at Oaklawn Park in February, he trailed by a dozen lengths early on but got up to win the mile race by 41⁄2 lengths. In his next race, the Louisiana Derby (gr. II) at 11⁄8 miles March 26, Nehro showed a new dimension. He raced close to the pace and got up for second, beaten a neck, after trailing by 21⁄4 lengths at the eighth pole. The chances of Nehro extending his speed to the 11⁄4-mile Kentucky Derby distance bodes well. Mineshaft was a major winner at that distance and his sire (A.P. Indy) and grandsire (Seattle Slew) were major winners at that distance and beyond. Mineshaft won the 2003 Jockey Club Gold Cup and the Suburban Handicap (both gr. I), both at 11⁄4 miles, the year he was Horse of the Year and champion older male. A.P. Indy, who was recently pensioned after standing his entire career at Lane’s End, captured the classic Belmont Stakes (gr. I) at 11⁄2 miles and the Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I) at 10 furlongs the year he won 1992 Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old male honors. Seattle Slew, who won the 1977 Triple Crown and Horse of the Year honors, needs no introduction. Mineshaft’s success has carried over to his days at stud. The 12-year-old stallion has sired 20 stakes winners and boasts a 2.20 Average Earnings Index (his Comparable Index is 2.61). He ranks among the leaders on this year’s general sires’ list. “He’s the type of horse who contributes durability, soundness, and versatility to a pedigree,” Farish said. Mineshaft’s success this year is not limited to Nehro. Another son, Dialed In, won the Florida Derby (gr. I) April 3. Nehro carries an interesting A.P. Indy/Mr. Prospector cross. Nehro, who has A.P. Indy as a grandsire, is out of a Mr. Prospector granddaughter. Mineshaft also is bred on that cross, being by A.P. Indy out of a Mr. Prospector mare. Nehro’s female family is a big plus. His fifth dam, Legendra, developed into a foundation mare for Virginia breeder/owner Taylor Hardin. The mare’s descendants include numerous prominent winners such as 1983 Irish Sweeps Derby (Ire-I) winner and champion Shareef Dancer. Nehro also has black-type support in his immediate female family. Out of multiple stakes-placed The Administrator (by Afleet), Nehro is a half brother to graded stakes winner Saint Marden and to addedmoney winner Sweet Lips. David Schmitz

he A.P. Indy line has long been a premier source of classic-distance dirt performance, so it was no surprise to see an A.P. Indy-line horse capture the $1 million Louisiana Derby (gr. II), the richest race run in the U.S. in the last weekend of March. What was more of a surprise is that the sire of the winner of that contest was not one of A.P. Indy’s major Kentucky-based sons, such as Pulpit, Malibu Moon, or Mineshaft, but the northeastern-based Jump Start. A look at Jump Start’s credentials, however, reveals him to be amply qualified to sire top-class runners. Bred by Overbrook Farm, Jump Start is out of the graded stakesplaced Storm Cat mare Steady Cat, and his second dam, Hopespringsforever, is a sister to Miswaki, who was a group I-winning 2-year-old in Europe and a stakes-winning sprinter in the U.S. before becoming an influential international sire. Despite his classic background and substantial build—he is now advertised as standing 16.2—Jump Start’s trainer, D. Wayne Lukas, had him in action relatively early in his 2-yearold season. His debut came in a 5½-furlong maiden at Churchill Downs in June, where he emerged on top of a duel for the lead to score by 2¼ lengths. Jump Start’s second start came in the Saratoga Special (gr. II), where he was again close to the pace throughout before scoring gamely over good juvenile Heavyweight Champ. In the Hopeful Stakes (gr. I), Jump Start came up against two of the fastest juveniles of the crop, Came Home and Mayakovsky, and could do no better than fifth, beaten more than 10 lengths. However, he rebounded from that effort to take second in the Champagne Stakes (gr. I) to Officer. Jump Start’s only other outing came in the Bessemer Trust Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (gr. I), where he was vanned off after suffering a career-ending injury. Retired to Overbrook, Jump Start covered his first mares as a 4-yearold. His first crop of 81 foals yielded no fewer than seven stakes winners, headed by graded winners Sir Whimsey, Jump On In, Bold Start, and Assessment, and the stakes-winning and multiple grade I-placed Copper State. Another seven stakes winners emerged from Jump Start’s second crop, among them the millionaire Rail Trip and Icabad Crane, a stakes winner at 3, 5, and 6 who also took third in the 2008 Preakness Stakes (gr. I). Jump Start was represented by a further five stakes winners from his third crop, foals of 2006. It was the bright start made by Jump Start’s first crop that saw his fee jump to $20,000 for the 2007 breeding season—he was introduced at $7,500—and the Louisana Derby winner Pants On Fire and stakes-placed Spring Jump, Jump Jump, and Prayer for Relief are all members of the resulting 2008 crop. With Overbrook ceasing operations, Jump Start moved to Ghost Ridge Farms in Pennsylvania for 2010. Again standing at $10,000 he was warmly received by breeders in the northeast, covering 115 mares—believed to be a record for the state—and he’s on target for a similar number in 2011.
t
Incidentally, the March 26 weekend was a banner one for Ghost Ridge Farms sires as another resident, E Dubai, was represented by Skysurfers, winner of the Godolphin Mile Sponsored by Etisalat (UAEII) at the Dubai World Cup meet. Pants On Fire began his career with a second in a five-furlong maiden at Philadelphia Park last September, then ran fourth behind the subsequent Louisiana Derby third, Mucho Macho Man, in a maiden at Monmouth. He got off the mark on his third outing, making all to score over a mile in the slop at Delaware Park, then ended the year with a neck second in an Aqueduct allowance event. He kicked off his 2011 campaign with a third in the Count Fleet Stakes at Aqueduct, then missed by just a head to Wilkinson in the LeComte Stakes (gr. III) after try to make all. Taken back off the pace in the Risen Star Stakes (gr. II), Pants On Fire could do no better than sixth, 7¼ lengths behind Mucho Macho Man. Only a second string for the team of trainer Kelly Breen and owners George and Lori Hall in the Louisiana Derby, Pants On Fire pressed the early pace before taking over in the stretch. After turning back the challenge of Mucho Macho Man, Pants On Fire continued in determined fashion to hold the late run of Nehro by a neck. Pants On Fire will head straight to the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) without another outing, and he is one whose pedigree suggests that he has a good chance of getting the trip. Although Jump Start—who was grade I-placed over 8½ furlongs at 2 — never had the opportunity to demonstrate his staying potential at 3, he appears to be a reasonable influence for stamina: Rail Trip (out of a mare by the speedy Carson City), was a grade I winner at 10 furlongs, Sir Whimsey won at grade II level over 8½ furlongs, and Assessment had stakes success at nine furlongs. Pants On Fire’s broodmare sire, Cape Town—another Overbrook runner—scored his most important win in the nine-furlong Florida Derby (gr. I). He is now standing in South America, but while in Kentucky he did sire champion 3-year-old filly Bird Town, winner of the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) at nine furlongs. Pants On Fire’s dam, Cabo De Noche, was a minor winner at 4. Pants On Fire is her second foal, the first being the 2009 2-yearold winner Louderthanthunder. Cabo De Noche is a half sister to Key Hunter (by Jade Hunter, a son of Cape Town’s grandsire, Mr. Prospector), who won the Russian Tango Handicap at Gulfstream Park, but more significantly took second in the CCA Oaks (gr. I). She subsequently produced the Aqueduct Handicap (gr. III) victor Liquor Cabinet (by Hennessy, a son of Jump Start’s broodmare sire, Storm Cat). Cabo De Noche is also half sister to another Mr. Prospector-line stakes winner in the Proud Citizen colt Hatfield, successful in the Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint and graded-placed at Aqueduct. The second dam of Pants On Fire, Key Flight, is a winning daughter of champion older horse Bates Motel (by English Derby winner Sir Ivor), a multiple grade I winner at up to 10 furlongs, and out of the Key to the Mint mare Key to Flight. Key to Flight never produced a black-type winner, but she is very well bred, as she’s a half sister to Irish champion 2-year-old filly Minstrella and multiple graded stakes winner Misty Gallore. Her dam, English stakes-placed Flight Dancer, is also ancestress of Horse of the Year Saint Liam and several generations of graded scorers. A half sister to the outstanding South American stallion Dancing Moss, Flight Dancer is out of the sublimely bred Courbette, an Irish stakes winner who was a daughter of Native Dancer and the great racemare, Gallorette. If Pants On Fire were to be successful at Churchill Downs, it wouldn’t be the first Derby winner for the family, as Gallorette’s dam, Gallete, was by Sir Gallahad II out of Flambette, where the 1935 Triple Crown hero, Omaha, was by a son of Sir Gallahad III out of a daughter of Flambette. Pants On Fire (rated A+ by TrueNicks) is the result of a version of the A.P. Indy/Seeking the Gold cross that has produced 16 stakes winners, including grade I scorer Majestic Warrior. The mating gives 3x4 inbreeding to Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew (grandsire of Jump Start and broodmare sire of Cape Town). There

rom a pedigree perspective, it appears to be a bit of a surprise that Shackleford has been able to find success at the graded stakes level around two turns at 3. The chestnut colt nearly pulled off a major upset as a 68-1 shot April 3 in the Florida Derby (gr. I) but was run down by Dialed In. Shackleford is, after all, a son of Forestry, a horse clearly at his best at seven furlongs to 11⁄16 miles, Forestry’s pedigree has plenty of classic influences. But perhaps there is more stamina buried in his bloodlines that may allow him to shine at 11⁄8 miles and beyond. With the quick Storm Cat on top, Forestry is out of a mare— Shared Interest—who won graded stakes from seven furlongs to 11⁄16 miles. However, Shared Interest is by Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes (both gr. I) winner Pleasant Colony, a grandson of the stamina-rich Ribot. The grandsire of Surgery, the dam of Shared Interest, is the brilliant-classic influence Rough’n Tumble. The bottom half of Shakleford’s pedigree—which is steeped in quality from a family developed and nurtured by the Francis Genter Stable—offers more depth from the stamina well. Oatsee’s sire, Unbridled, was a strong source of stamina in North America prior to his premature death at 14 in 2001. Oatsee’s female line had staying power as well. Her dam, With Every Wish, is a granddaughter of Roberto. Shackleford’s immediate family may offer clues to his prowess beyond 11⁄16 miles in that he’s a half brother to grade III two-turn winner Baghdaria and to Lady Joanne, winner of the 11⁄4-mile Alabama Stakes (gr. I) in 2007. It should be noted that Lady Joanne, winner of the two-turn Golden Rod Stakes (gr. II) as a 2-year-old, is by Orientate, champion sprinter of 2002. Evan Hammonds

f 10 is perfect, 2011 Triple Crown contender Santiva rates at least an 8.5. It seems the default for classic distances in the U.S. is 10 furlongs as with the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), the Coaching Club American Oaks (gr. I), the Travers Stakes (gr. I), etc. The problem is that at this time of year none of the 3-year-olds have run that far, so the only real way to gauge their abilities (or possibilities) is their past performances and their pedigrees. Given those two criteria, Santiva, a tough, determined Giant’s Causeway colt who seems to have inherited his daddy’s grit, comes in at 8.5. Statistically speaking, the mode is the number that occurs most frequently in a given set of data. For distance preference Santiva ranks an 8.5. Of his five career starts, four have come at that distance, three of them at age 2. Santiva broke his maiden in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (gr. II) at Churchill Downs in November after finishing second in Keeneland’s grade I Dixiana Breeders’ Futurity. While it might not be unusual for a 2-year-old to break his maiden at 8.5 furlongs, to do so in a grade II stakes says something about that juvenile’s class. He opened his sophomore season in February with a second in the 8.5-furlong Risen Star Stakes (gr. II) behind the highly touted Mucho Macho Man. Champion Giant’s Causeway won at distances from six to 10.5 furlongs. His sole start on dirt was a second-place finish to Tiznow by an infinitesimal margin in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I) at Churchill Downs. Giant’s Causeway’s progeny’s average winning distance is 8.55 furlongs. The female side of Santiva’s pedigree is known for speed. His dam, Slide, is an unraced half sister to champion sprinter Safely Kept and to grade II winner Partner’s Hero. Perhaps Slide’s sire Smarten added a bit more endurance to the family as Slide has produced eight winning offspring, six of which have won at 8.5 furlongs, including Santiva’s full sister Her Majesty, whose grade II placing came in the Darley Alcibiades Stakes at, what else, 8.5 furlongs. s of April 21, Silver Medallion ranks 25th on the list of horses most likely still on the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) trail. The favorite for Keeneland’s Coolmore Lexington (gr. III) on the 23rd, Silver Medallion has an opportunity to secure a spot in the starting gate at Churchill Downs two weeks later. The $120,000 winner’s share of the Lexington puts him safely in the race; a second-place finish moves him closer but he still would need a couple of defections from Derby candidates with higher graded earnings. If he does make it to the Derby, Silver Medallion will be competing in his third graded event in a 29-day span. Steve Asmussen probably would have preferred the choice of sending the bay colt directly to Louisville off of the April 9 Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) but his fourth-place finish there did not assure a spot in the classic. Silver Medallion’s only other start this year—and best win to date—was a victory February 12 in the El Camino Real Derby (gr. III). Silver Medallion is one of 101 foals in the first crop of his sire, the Silver Deputy stallion Badge of Silver. Winner every year from 2 to 6, Badge of Silver earned his biggest paychecks with a tally in the 2005 New Orleans Handicap (gr. II) and a third-place effort the following year in the NetJets Breeders’ Cup Mile (gr. IT). Badge of Silver’s five-year racing career was of rather long duration by modern standards, but the Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey colorbearer went to the post only 16 times during the timeframe, winning six and banking a bit more than $1 million, with his best efforts coming at eight and nine furlongs. An early winner himself—Badge of Silver took a Keeneland maiden special weight as an April 2-year-old—he reasonably was expected to sire early maturers. He did not disappoint: 42 of his first-crop juveniles started, with 17 winners emerging from the group. Part of Badge of Silver’s early stud success is attributable to the opportunities he received at Brereton Jones’ Airdrie Stud. His first book had a strong 2.12 Class Performance Index and 1.71 Comparable Index, indicating his mares were both talented runners and proven producers. One of the dams that contributed to the strong CI figure was the Stalwart mare Another Vegetarian, who previously had produced 2005 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes (gr. IT) winner and millionaire filly Sweet Talker. What did Jones gain by sending a grade I-producing mare to an untested sire? It happened by mere hours, but the cross resulted in Badge of Silver’s lone first-crop progeny juvenile stakes victory. Silver Medallion, eighth foal of Another Vegetarian, scored in the Eddie Logan Stakes held December 31 at Santa Anita to earn the distinction. Another Vegetarian was unimpressive as a racefilly, but she has proven to be a solid producer. In addition to Sweet Talker and Silver Medallion, the Stalwart mare produced hard-knocking Fantastic Day, earner of $360,424, and three additional winners. Unfortunately for Silver Medallion’s Triple Crown hopes, his family bloodlines are more likely to add speed than to help stretch out Badge of Silver’s nine-furlong limits. Broodmare sire Stalwart was a precocious miler, while Another Vegetarian’s female line consistently has produced sprint runners. Owners Black Rob Stables and Michael Ryan should hope that being one of the bestconditioned horses in the field makes up for any stamina shortfalls in this pedigree. Scot T. Gillies

he future of the Danzig line in the U.S. looked somewhat shaky not long ago but has experienced a marked turn around recently. Danzig is now represented by second-season sires War Front, Pomeroy, and Bellamy Road, who all have graded winners in their first crops, as well as by Exchange Rate, whose first Kentucky crops are 2-year-olds of 2011; by grade I winner and Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I)-placed Hard Spun, whose first crop are 2-year-olds in 2011; and by champion and dual classic winner,Big Brown, whose first crop are now yearlings. War Front and Pomeroy are currently duking it out at the top of the second-crop sires lists, both having graded stakes-winning colts at the end of February. War Front took command with the victory of Soldat in the Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II), but Pomeroy kept things interesting with an impressive Hutcheson Stakes (gr. II) triumph for Flashpoint. Soldat is one of six stakes winners to represent War Front so far, the others being the lightning fast West Coast colt The Factor, who took the seven-furlong San Vicente Stakes (gr. II) and will attempt to stretch out and flash his classic credentials in the Sunland Park Derby (gr. III); the Louisiana Jewl Stakes victress Tensas Punch; and Warning Flag, who won the Irish Stallion Farms E.B.F. Star Appeal Stake, and took second in the JRA Killavullan Stakes (Ire-III) in Ireland last year. Given that he has already sired a total of 25 individual first-crop winners, it seems clear that the War Fronts are developing faster than did their sire. Unplaced in his only outing at 2, War Front didn’t gain his first victory until taking a six-furlong maiden at Saratoga (which he won by 11½ lengths) in his second start at 3. He continued to develop like a coming star as he added a six-length victory in a six-furlong Belmont allowance race, then took the 8½-furlong Princelet Stakes, an overnight restricted stakes, by eight lengths. Ending his sophomore season against tougher competition in the Discovery Handicap (gr. III)— run over the Princelet Stakes course and distance—War Front faded in the stretch to finish sixth, beaten just over six lengths. This performance appeared to convince War Front’s connections that the horse was a sprinter, and at 4, his seven starts all came at distances between six and seven furlongs. War Front won just one of those starts, taking the Alfred G. Vanderbilt Breeders’ Cup Handicap (gr. II), but did prove himself among the best and most consistent sprinters of the year, with seconds in five other graded contests. As a sprinting son of Danzig out of a mare by champion sprinter Rubiano, War Front was reasonably expected to be a dominant influence for speed. However, War Chant’s dam, Starry Dreamer, was an atypical daughter of Rubiano, both in preferred distance and surface. She was capable on dirt—she ran second in the Gazelle Handicap

(gr. I) on that surface—but was at her best going long on the turf, winning three stakes, including the Palisades Stakes at nine furlongs, and placing in several major events, including seconds in the Long Island and La Prevoyante Handicaps (both gr. II) at 12 furlongs. Turf and stamina are present not only in the distaff side of Rubiano’s pedigree—his dam is by Nijinsky II out of a sister to Relaunch—but also through the sires of War Front’s second and third damsires. Forli won South America’s most important race, the Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini, at 15 furlongs, and Round Table was equally at home on either dirt or turf and set a course record at 13 furlongs. Soldat’s distaff side also includes some stamina. His dam, Le Relais, was unraced but is a daughter of Coronado’s Quest. By the multiple grade I winner and Kentucky Derby runner-up Forty Niner, Coronado’s Quest was saddled with a difficult temperament that led to his connections side-stepping the Derby, but he emulated his sire and proved his ability at 10 furlongs with a win in the Travers Stakes (gr. I). His other victories included the Buick Haskell Invitational Handicap (gr. I) and Wood Memorial Stakes (gr. II). Coronado’s Quest was somewhat disappointing as a sire, but he’s showing considerable promise as a broodmare sire, as with his first daughters only now 11 years old, he’s already broodmare sire of nine stakes winners, including champion sprinter Kodiak Kowboy and grade one winners Mani Bhavan and Boys At Tosconova. The rest of Soldat’s family gives more of a mixed message concerning stamina. His dam is half sister to Mulrainy, a Star de Naskra filly who won up to 8½ furlongs in Canada, taking the Duchess Stakes (gr. III) and La Lorgnette Stakes, and also taking third in the Selene Stakes (gr. I). Malbay, the dam of Le Relais and Mulrainy, was by Apalachee, a champion 2-year-old in Europe by Round Table, and predominantly an influence for speed. Malbay scored her only win as a 2-year-old going 4½ furlongs, but she did take second in Canada’s premier juvenile filly event, the Princess Elizabeth Stakes, at 8½ furlongs. Soldat’s third dam, Sawmill Lady, is an unraced daughter of Marshua’s Dancer, a Raise a Native son bred on the same cross as Mr. Prospector, and primarily an influence for speed. Apart from Malbay, she also produced the Bessarabian Handicap (gr. III) third Lightning Pace and listed-placed Stalled Engine, and is granddam of good Canadian sprint filly,Shilla (by Marquetry out of a sister to Malbay). Sawmill Lady—out of Bobisque, a daughter of John Henry’s sire Ole Bob Bowers who also placed in the Princess Elizabeth Stakes, is half sister to Dancing Affair, dam of the American Derby (gr. IIT) and Pennsylvania Derby (gr. III) winner Pine Dance and granddam of the prolific stakes winner The Happy Hopper. The sixth dam, Risque Blue, is notable as also being ancestress of champions Fort Marcy and Key to the Mint. Soldat, who is TrueNicks rated A++, is the product of the cross of War Front over a Mr. Prospector-line mare, as are War Front’s other three stakes winners to date (The Factor is out of a mare by Miswaki; Tensas Punch out of a daughter of the Two Punch horse Pulling Punches; and Warning Flag from a mare by Unbridled’s Song, and inbred to Fappiano). Here the Mr. Prospector appears 5x4, with Mr. Prospector’s genetic relative Marshua’s Dancer also in the fourth generation. With Danzig over Forty Niner, Soldat is also a reverse cross to Distorted Humor, a sprinter/ miler who sired Kentucky Derby winner Funny Cide in his first crop, and has since added another classic winner, the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) victor Drosselmeyer. Whether these elements will bless Soldat with sufficient stamina for the Derby trip remains to be seen. It is interesting that, to date, his development somewhat parallels that of his aforementioned fellow Danzig-line horse Big Brown: Both are by sprinting sons of Danzig (Big Brown was by Boundary); both impressed on turf at 2, Soldat winning the With Anticipation Stakes (gr. III) and taking seconds in the Pilgrim Stakes (gr. IIIT) and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (gr. IIT); both made the switch to dirt to take wide-margin victories in the slop in Gulfstream Park allowance races; and both impressed with victories in Florida classic trials. Soldat has led throughout in both his dirt victories but proved able to stalk in his turf contests, and should he show the same tactical versatility on dirt, then he can’t be ruled out as a threat at 10 furlongs. f he were in anyone else’s barn but Todd Pletcher’s, Stay Thirsty would be regarded as a top prospect for the American classics. As it is, he has lived in the shadow of his brilliant stablemate, 2010 champion juvenile male Uncle Mo, who is also owned by Mike Repole. But on March 5, Stay Thirsty stepped out of the shadows to take the spotlight for a day, capturing the Gothan Stakes (gr. III) in his season opener. Whether Stay Thirsty will develop far enough and fast enough to mount a serious challenge for leadership of the division is still to be seen, but the pedigree credentials are certainly there. Bred by John D. Gunther and John Darren Gunther, he is the fifth stakes winner and fifth graded stakes winner for Bernardini. The Darley stallion had a good weekend; in addition to Stay Thirsty’s win, Bernardini’s daughter A Z Warrior ran third in the Santa Anita Oaks (gr. I), while his well-bred sons Break Up the Game and Wilburn collected maiden victories. While Bernardini did quite well as a freshman sire of 2010, he is expected to fare even better among second-crop sires as his progeny mature and get more distance under their hooves. Stay Thirsty is one of two sons who would make almost anyone’s list of the top 20 prospects for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I); the other, multiple grade II winner To Honor and Serve, finished third in the Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II) February 26 in his first start of 2011. Stay Thirsty’s female line traces back to royal roots indeed as his eighth dam, Masda, was a stakes-winning full sister to the legendary Man o’ War. A good but not exceptional broodmare, she produced three modest stakes winners, the most important of which was Incandescent. A daughter of 1929 leading sire Chicle, Incandescent produced the stakes winners Flash Burn (by Brazado) and Fuego (by Bim Bam), both better known for durability than raw talent, and Igual, the dam of 1946 Triple Crown winner Assault (by Bold Venture).

A daughter of the great Equipoise, Igual was a lucky mare to ever get to the paddocks, much less produce a champion. A sickly foal, she was slated for humane destruction when the King Ranch’s veterinarian, J. K. Northway, discovered an abscess under her stifle. She recovered after the abscess was lanced and drained but was never trained for racing, going directly to the King Ranch’s broodmare band as a 2-year-old. Igual produced nine full siblings to Assault (as well as three foals by other sires), and two were also stakes winners: 1954 Gazelle and Betsey Ross Stakes winner On Your Own and Postillion, a durable sort who won two stakes races in Canada as a 6-year-old. Sin Igual, another of the siblings, won only one of 11 starts but had some importance as a broodmare, as her daughter Mono (by Better Self) produced the useful racer and sire Rare Performer and his full sister Mine Only, dam of graded stakes winners Academy Award, Good Mood, and Statuette and granddam of Well Chosen (1998 Ashland Stakes, gr. I) and In Contention (1996 Cherry Hill Mile Stakes, gr. III). Equal Venture, another of Assault’s full sisters, never raced but produced the talented stayer Prove Out (by Graustark), best remembered for his conquest of Secretariat in the 1973 Woodward Stakes (gr. I). She also produced 1968 Test Stakes winner Heartland (by Bold Ruler), dam of grade III winner Distant Land (by Graustark), and two-time stakes winner Saidam (by Never Say Die); Country Dream (by Ribot), dam of English group III winner Midyan (by Miswaki); and unraced Fairness (by 1958 Belmont Stakes winner Cavan), dam of 1983 Irish champion miler Solford (by Nijinsky II) and 1975 Vosburgh Handicap (gr. II) winner No Bias (by Jacinto). Equal Change, daughter of Fairness and 1969 Horse of the Year Arts and Letters, was second in the 1975 Coaching Club American Oaks (gr. I). She continued the family line through 1988 Carousel Handicap (gr. III) winner Spur Wing (by Storm Bird), granddam of group stakes winners Highest and Nayyir, and through stakes winner Make Change (by Roberto). Although Make Change never won a graded race, she placed in no fewer than eight grade I events before retiring to the paddocks, where she produced French listed stakes winner Time Changes (by Danzig). More importantly, her winning daughter Marozia (by Storm Bird) has now produced three stakes winners: 2005 Fred W. Hooper Handicap (gr. III) winner and Belmont Stakes (gr. I) runner-up Andromeda’s Hero (by Fusaichi Pegasus), grade I-placed and Whirling Ash Stakes victor Superfly (by Fusaichi Pegasus), and Stay Thirsty. As can be seen from the above, Stay Thirsty’s family has consistently produced quality runners and, occasionally, a racehorse of the highest class. He will have to do quite a bit of developing to reach that level, of course, but while the competition may trip him up on the first Saturday in May, his pedigree certainly won’t. Avalyn Hunter

hose looking for a possible new factor in this year’s Triple Crown hunt need look no further than The Factor. After the colt was seen hanging on to a 3⁄4-length win over Sway Away in the seven-furlong San Vicente Stakes (gr. II) run Feb. 20, many questioned whether The Factor could get a longer trip. On March 19, the brilliantly fast colt provided an emphatic answer, crushing the best-credentialed field seen so far on the Triple Crown trail by 61⁄4 lengths in the 8½-furlong Rebel Stakes (gr. II). A poor showing four weeks later in the Arkansas Derby (gr. I) renewed some of the doubt and probably knocked The Factor from being the favorite for the 2011 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I). The Factor had things his own way in the Rebel, leading comfortably at every call while carving out solid but unspectacular fractions. This was a much different pace scenario than the colt encountered in either the Arkansas Derby, where he was outrun for the early lead and faded in the stretch, and in the San Vicente, in which he had to repel multiple challengers while setting wickedly fast fractions. On paper, The Factor looks more like a miler than a colt likely to stay the 10 furlongs of the Kentucky Derby. Bred in Kentucky by H & W Thoroughbreds, the colt is from the first crop of Claiborne Farm stallion War Front, also the sire of impressive Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II) winner Soldat and three other stakes winners to date. As a racehorse, War Front was very fast, winning the 2006 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Breeders’ Cup Handicap (gr. II) and running second in five other graded sprints, though he did stay well enough to score easily in the restricted Princelet Stakes at 8 ½ furlongs. War Front is by the great sire Danzig, whose line has generally tended towards sprinters and milers but has thrown a number of horses that could get longer distances, especially when bred to staying mares. This would suggest that War Front may have had more aptitude for distance than he had the opportunity to display, for his dam, Starry Dreamer, won the listed Palisades Stakes over nine furlongs and was grade II-placed at up to 12 furlongs. While her sire Rubiano (by Fappiano) was the champion sprinter of 1992, he was better at seven and eight furlongs than at six. He was also a maternal grandson of Nijinsky II, suggesting that Starry Dreamer’s aptitude for turf and distance did not all come by way of her dam, the Forli mare Lara’s Star, or her granddam, the Round Table mare True Reality. In War Front’s brief stud career, he has already shown an enviable versatility, siring stakes winners on turf and dirt and under fast and sloppy conditions. The question now is whether that versatility can stretch itself beyond the nine furlongs that Soldat conquered in his Fountain of Youth victory. While Soldat has a genuine 10-furlong horse as his broodmare sire in Coronado’s Quest, The Factor’s maternal grandsire is Miswaki, whose best win came in the 1,400-meter Prix de la Salamandre (Fr-I) as a juvenile. Miswaki, though, has been more than a pure speed influence—perhaps because his maternal grandsire is the great Buckpasser—and sired such horses as 1991 Horse of the Year Black Tie Affair and 1993 CIGA Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Fr-I) winner Urban Sea. Of course, as is typical for sprinting sires whose backgrounds are a mix of speed and stamina, Miswaki has usually needed some help from his mates in order to sire animals capable of staying much more than a mile. Whether he got that help when he sired The Factor’s dam, Greyciousness, is a bit questionable. A half sister to multiple grade I-placed Chief Seattle (by Seattle Slew), Greyciousness is out of Skatingonthinice (by Icecapade), a listed stakes winner over 8½ furlongs. Perhaps more importantly, Greyciousness is closely related to Skatingonthinice’s half sister Showering (by Miswaki), a sprint stakes winner. Although Showering stayed well enough to be stakes-placed

over 8½ furlongs and is the dam of the 12-furlong stakes winner Perfect Shower (by the Sadler’s Wells horse Perfect Soul), she is another of those horses with a mixed sprinting/staying background that appears to tend more toward speed than stamina. Icecapade, sire of Skatingonthinice, is another question mark. A brilliantly fast but volatile runner who was at his best over intermediate distances, he tended to throw speed but could sire horses that stayed better than he himself did—most notably, the inaugural Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I) winner Wild Again and the ill-fated Canadian Triple Crown winner Izvestia, who suffered a fatal breakdown as a 4-year-old. Rain Shower, the dam of Skatingonthinice, is by Bold Forbes, another horse whose influence for stamina is questionable despite wins in the 1976 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes (gr. I). In truth, the latter race was a masterful piece of grand larceny on the part of Angel Cordero, who used Bold Forbes’ speed to steal a long march on his rivals and had just enough horse left to get home in front of McKenzie Bridge and Great Contractor. Bold Forbes’ best distance was probably nine furlongs rather than 10, and this was reflected by his best runners, champion 3-year-old filly Tiffany Lass and Wood Memorial (gr. I) winner Air Forbes Won. In some ways, The Factor is reminiscent of Smarty Jones, another highly talented colt with unquestioned speed and a highly efficient way of going but a pedigree that at first glance did not promise staying ability. In Smarty’s case, however, the second and third damsires were horses that were unquestionably genuine over 10 furlongs or more: Foolish Pleasure and Herbager. If The Factor is to stay 10 furlongs, he will also have to draw resources from ancestors further back in his pedigree and will have to avoid getting sucked into a duel with other front-runners as well. Nonetheless, he is one of the most exciting colts to emerge on this spring’s Triple Crown trail, and it will be very interesting indeed to see if he can take the next step toward Derby glory. he winter racing seasons in New York and Florida could hardly be further apart. Aqueduct is cold and wet, its inner track hosting mostly hardy locals; Gulfstream Park enjoys the balmy weather of South Florida and the prestige of being the premier Eastern winter/ spring meeting. Races at Aqueduct and Gulfstream February 5 showcased two colts that are as far apart in background as their race venues. At Aqueduct, the winner of the featured Whirlaway Stakes was the modestly pedigreed Toby’s Corner, Florida-bred but apparently right at home in as miserable weather as February in New York can dish out. But farther
t
south, the performance of the day belonged to regally bred Cal Nation, who upstaged a much-ballyhooed allowance race featuring several possible Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) hopefuls on the same card with an impressive 7¾-length score in a seven-furlong maiden event. Toby’s Corner perhaps comes by his liking for Aqueduct honestly, for his sire is Bellamy Road, whose eye-popping score by 17½ lengths in the 2005 Wood Memorial (gr. I) at Aqueduct made him that year’s Kentucky Derby favorite. Seventh in the Derby itself, the colt ran a game second behind Flower Alley in the Travers Stakes (gr. I) before injury ended his attempt at a comeback. Now standing at Pauls Mill, Bellamy Road has sired four stakes winners from his first crop of racing age. Bellamy Road is the best of 24 stakes winners for the Chief’s Crown horse Concerto, who has enjoyed a useful stud career at Ocala Stud. Also the sire of Puerto Rican champions Special Concerto and Concerto’s Crown and multiple Jamaican champion Chadman, Concerto was a good runner in his own right, capturing the 1997 Jim Beam Stakes (gr. II) and three grade III events and nine stakes overall during his 21race career. Toby’s Corner races as a homebred for Dianne Cotter, who also bred Bellamy Road and the colt’s dam, Brandon’s Ride. A winner on the track, Brandon’s Ride is by Mister Frisky, whose Cinderella run to the Derby took him through sixteen straight wins in Puerto Rico and California, culminating with a stylish score in the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I). But midnight tolled in the Kentucky Derby as Mister Frisky ran up the track, and a non-threatening third in the Preakness Stakes (gr. I) did little to recover his reputation. It turned out that Mister Frisky had an excuse for the dull performances, though. Following the Preakness, a large growth was discovered in the colt’s throat. He recovered following surgery but never regained his previous form in two subsequent starts. As a stallion, his indifferent pedigree apparently caught up with him as he sired just two stakes winners, multiple graded stakes winner Frisk Me Now and three-time stakes winner Mister Crafty. The weakest part of Toby’s Corner’s pedigree is the tail-female line, which has little to recommend it until one gets to his fifth dam, Phoenix Girl (by Red Hannigan). The dam of 1975 Michigan Mile and OneEighth Handicap (gr. II) winner Mr. Lucky Phoenix (by Lucky Debonair), Phoenix Girl is out of the high-class Jacola and is, thus, a half sister to 1947 champion 3-year-old male Phalanx. Further back, this stamina-oriented family was one of the pillars of William Woodward’s Belair Stud, its members including the likes of 1935 Triple Crown winner Omaha, 1938 Ascot Gold Cup winner Flares, and 1939 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner Johnstown. Another important member of this clan is the great race mare Gallorette, who was bred by Preston Burch and raced for William Brann. Cal Nation, on the other hand, has as high-quality an immediate female family as anyone would care to see. A WinStar Farm homebred, he is a Distorted Humor half brother to grade I winner and 2006 Derby and Belmont runner-up Bluegrass Cat. Dam She’s a Winner is an unraced full sister to 2010 Vosburgh Stakes (gr. I) winner Girolamo, to graded stakes winners Accelerator and Daydreaming, and to Supercharger, dam of 2010 Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver. Also the dam of multiple graded stakes winner Lord of the Game (by Saint Ballado) and stakes winner Sonoma Cat (by Storm Cat), She’s a Winner is by A.P. Indy out of Get Lucky, a graded stakes-winning full sister to 1989 champion juvenile male Rhythm and to successful sire Not For Love. Get Lucky, in turn, is by Mr. Prospector out of 1983 Beldame Stakes (gr. I) winner Dance Number (by Northern Dancer), a half sister to multiple grade I winner and important sire Private Account (by Damascus) out of 1971 champion juvenile filly Numbered Account. This is, of course, a branch of the great La Troienne family and is a standout line even within that storied clan. Distorted Humor has generally done well with mares packing Buckpasser or Seattle Slew, and his four stakes winners from 54 foals of racing age out of mares by A.P. III) winner Endorsement. Cal Nation has yet to reach that level, of course, but his maiden win promises much bigger things ahead. Trainer Todd Pletcher has already indicated that those bigger things will probably not include the Kentucky Derby—with the early Derby favorite, Uncle Mo, already in his barn, he hardly needs to rush another promising prospect—but it is always possible that the colt may appear later in the Triple Crown series if he develops as well as he has started. Toby’s Corner, on the other hand, appears to be right where he needs to be if a trip to Louisville in May is going to be a possibility. With a listed win over a route under his belt, his next task will be to demonstrate whether he has already expressed his maximum potential or has inherited the racing talent of his sire and maternal grandsire. If the latter, his pedigree may start looking a lot better a little way down the Triple Crown trail. Avalyn Hunter

in the sales ring. Successful Appeal carries on In Reality’s sire-line legacy of precocity. Of 379 foals from his first seven crops, 189 (49.9%) were 2-year-old starters and 97 (51.3% of runners) were juvenile winners. In fact, 41.9% of Successful Appeal’s stakes winners from the same crops earned that distinction as freshman runners. (While Twice the Appeal did not earn black type as a juvenile, it is notable that his first start came before he reached 27 months old. If he makes it to the starting gates on Derby Day, Twice the Appeal will be one of the youngest contenders for the roses. A May 10 foal, he will be three days shy of his third birthday.) For Triple Crown considerations, trainer Jeff Bonde hopes that Twice the Appeal varies from the Successful Appeal mold of onedimensional early speed. The Walmac Farm stallion’s progeny average winning distance of 6.69 furlongs is only two-thirds of the Derby distance—that final turn and stretch run in front of the Churchill Downs grandstand can seem long indeed for a horse whose pedigree stops at seven furlongs. Elsewhere in the pedigree, stamina is similarly elusive. His dam Double Boarded ran frequently but poorly, finishing with only two thirds from 20 starts, most at sprint distances. Double Boarded’s only other foal of real note was Board Eligible, a two-time stakes winner and placed in the Ladies Handicap (gr. III), who averaged 8.09 furlongs in her eight victories. Broodmare sire Cormorant is another speed influence, his daughter’s foals winning, on average, at only a few ticks above seven furlongs. Some hopeful history is on Twice the Appeal’s side: Successful Appeal did sire Closing Argument, who placed second in the 2005 Kentucky Derby without much infusion of stamina from his dam’s family. And the two sons of Successful Appeal share the accomplishment of winning a grade III Derby prep event over nine furlongs. Scot T. Gillies

wice the Appeal’s 2-year-old campaign was not the stuff of legends. But making seven juvenile starts is itself a noteworthy accomplishment, and Twice the Appeal’s four appearances on the board indicated he had early talent, if not yet the ability to close the deal. Within three weeks, a second victory—this time an easy win in a Santa Anita starter allowance over a mile—to start his sophomore campaign made it clear that Twice the Appeal had come into his own. Running in the Turf Paradise Derby for his next start, Twice the Appeal came in second, two lengths back from fellow Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) candidate Beer Meister, but was disqualified to fourth place after crowding another runner. The effort was strong enough to earn the colt a trip to Sunland Park for the grade III Sunland Derby. There he ran in the middle of the pack to start but closed strongly, finishing 1½ lengths to the good of Triple Crown hopefuls Astrology and Ruler On Ice. Owned by a partnership of Edward J. Brown Jr., Victor Flores, and Henry Hernandez, Twice the Appeal was a $35,000 Barretts May 2-year-old after a disappointing $4,000 RNA as a Keeneland September yearling. The other Successful Appeal juvenile colts auctioned in 2010 averaged $195,000—more than 5½ times his own final price—indicating Twice the Appeal did not earn much respect

ut for a few inches of Brilliant Speed’s nose, Twinspired would now be a grade I winner and guaranteed a starting spot in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I). Instead, his second-place finish in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I) has him on the bubble for one of the 20 slots in the Derby gate. At 24th on the current graded stakes earnings list, he has a fair shot of making the field if owners Alpha Stables, Skychai Racing, and Sand Dollar Stable decide to give the colt a chance at the roses. Triple Crown fans may remember Twinspired’s sire, Harlan’s Holi-

day, as the sire of Denis of Cork, a highly regarded colt who ran third in the 2008 Kentucky Derby and second in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I). The son of 1994 Vosburgh Stakes (gr. I) winner Harlan was himself among the leading Derby contenders of his year after wins in the Florida Derby (gr. I) and Blue Grass Stakes but could do no better than seventh at Churchill Downs. The following year Harlan’s Holiday again showed his best form in the spring, winning the Donn Handicap (gr. I) and running second to Moon Ballad in the Dubai World Cup (UAE-I). His best race following the Dubai trip was a second-place finish to Congaree in the Hollywood Gold Cup (gr. I). Reflecting the mix of speed and stamina in his own pedigree (his dam, Christmas in Aiken, is a daughter of Affirmed), Harlan’s Holiday has sired performers ranging from the staying Denis of Cork to Majesticperfection, one of last year’s best sprinters. His own best performances were at nine furlongs, but with El Prado as his maternal grandsire, Twinspired may be comfortable with a bit more distance. Ability on turf could also be a possibility should the colt’s owners care to experiment. Bred by John Jain, Lawrence Opas, and Frank Sinatra, Twinspired is out of Historic Drive, who showed nothing in two starts on dirt before being retired but has produced two other winners from five foals of racing age. Her dam, the Silent Screen mare Keep It Legal, won once in eight tries before producing nine winners, stakes-placed Decora (by Well Decorated) among them. Twinspired is easily the best runner produced by his damline since 1982 San Antonio Handicap (gr. I) winner Score Twenty Four, a son of Golden Eagle II and Twinspired’s third dam, Adjudicate Miss (by Traffic Judge). The next two dams, Riant (by Roman) and Chuckle (by Haste) were both stakes winners as juveniles but did not train on, probably the reason why Riant was repeatedly bred to sires that had demonstrated both more distance capacity and the ability to race well at three and four. The attempt to infuse more stamina and durability was apparently not successful as none of Riant’s five foals ever earned black type and two—Adjudicate Miss included—never raced. Still, there is at least a little back class to this female line, and it is just possible that the cross back to a classy horse with some speed in his background may have been the spark to produce a good horse. The question now is just how good Twinspired is off synthetics, where he has earned all his black type so far. Avalyn Hunter

paper heading into the 2011 Triple Crown season is a balanced pedigree to boot, one chock full of stamina, classic, and speed influences. In modern pedigrees there is little escape from Northern Dancer’s lineage, and the stallion with brilliant and classic influences appears three times in Uncle Mo’s five-cross pedigree. Northern Dancer runs through both the dam line of Uncle Mo’s sire Indian Charlie, as the great grandsire of Indian Charlie’s dam Soviet Sojourn, and through Uncle Mo’s female family as the grandsire of Dixie Slippers, Uncle Mo’s second dam. Both Uncle Mo’s sire and dam have classic influences running through the top of their respective pedigrees. French Two Thousand Guineas winner Caro is the great grandsire of Indian Charlie, and the classic influence of Epsom Derby winner Roberto runs through Playa Maya’s sireline through Arch and Kris S. Stamina also comes through the Kris S. line (his broodmare sire is Princequillo), and through Soviet Sojourn. Soviet Sojourn’s dam, Political Parfait, adds Princequillo’s blood on her top line and carries a double-dose of stamina through her broodmare sire Crème dela Crème and Round Table on her dam side. A dash of speed for Uncle Mo comes through his direct female line. Third dam Cyane’s Slippers is a daughter of Cyane, the ’61 Belmont Futurity winner. Indian Charlie, the favorite for the 1998 Kentucky Derby (gr. I), has sired 54 stakes winners and four champions. He has also sired top-level 3-year-olds Conveyance and My Pal Charlie. Evan Hammonds

ncle Mo, who ran away with the Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (gr. I) and Eclipse Award balloting as top 2-year-old male, has already shown he has what it takes physically to win going two turns at Churchill Downs. What makes the son of Indian Charlie equally as imposing on
n expectation that the Tampa Bay Derby (gr. II) would see a son of Forty Niner stamp his credentials as a Kentucky Derby prospect was fulfilled, but not in the way most anticipated. The previously undefeated 1-2 favorite Brethren turned for home with the lead. However, he’d been pressed hard for much of the way by the unheralded Crimson Knight—claimed for just $16,000 on his previous out—and with a furlong to run, there was little to choose among Brethren, Crimson Knight, and the looming Watch Me Go. Perhaps due to his early efforts, Brethren was the first to yield, leaving Watch Me Go to wear down a stubborn Crimson Knight in the last few strides. Watch Me Go, who was dispatched at 43-1 for the Tampa Bay Derby, had also faced Brethren on his previous start, finishing third in the Sam F. Davis Stakes (gr. III). This was Watch Me Go’s first try outside of sprint distances, and for a horse who has developed into a classic prospect he’d shown more speed and precocity than the norm, making his debut May 22 in a 4½-furlong maiden at Calder, scoring by 1½ lengths. At that point, his connections felt they might have something special, but Watch Me

Go’s progress was halted by minor shin problems that necessitated some time off at the farm. He returned to action in August, running fourth to Gourmet Dinner in both the Dr. Fager and Affirmed divisions of the Florida Stallion stakes series. Dropped back to 5½ furlongs for a Calder allowance event, Watch Me Go confirmed his speed with a 2½-length win. Returned to stakes company, he was then fourth in the Birdonthewire Stakes and fifth in the Inaugural Stakes. He began this year with an eightlength tally in a 6½-furlong allowance/optional claiming contest at Tampa Bay, his only other outing before the Sam F. Davis. Although he’d been five lengths in arrears of Brethren that day, his connections felt that he would progress a lot from what was his first two-turn effort. The picture was muddied April 9 when Watch Me Go was unable to rally a challenge in the nine-furlong TVG Illinois Derby (gr. III), finishing a well-beaten sixth. Brethren is by Forty Niner’s outstanding sire son Distorted Humor—and as we’ve hinted, Watch Me Go is also by a son of that horse, albeit a somewhat less well-known one. Watch Me Go is owned and bred by Gil Campbell, who stands Watch Me Go’s sire, West Acre, at his Stonehedge Farm South near Ocala. Bred by Claiborne Farm, West Acre was unraced, but his pedigree attracted Campbell. By Forty Niner, West Acre is out of graded stakes winner Narrate, making him a similarly bred half sibling to the Frizette Stakes (gr. I) victress Preach, dam of Pulpit, and to Yarn, the dam of Tale of the Cat and English juvenile highweight Minardi and granddam of Johannesburg, champion 2-year-old in Europe and the U.S. Preach and Yarn are both by Mr. Prospector, the sire of Forty Niner. With relatively little support from outside mares either in quantity or quality, West Acre has sired 11 stakes winners from his first 10 crops. Prior to Watch Me Go, the best have been Ivanavinalot, heroine of the Bonnie Miss Stakes (gr. II) and three other stakes, and Speak Easy Gal, who took the Orchid Stakes (gr. III). In addition to Watch Me Go, West Acre’s current 3-year-old crop includes Cathy’s Crunches, a three-time stakes winner and graded stakes performer who was third March 13 in the China Doll Stakes, and Blue Eyed Sweetie, who took the Lindsay Frolic Stakes and Brave Raj Stakes at Calder. Campbell said that he always had an intuitive feeling that West Acre would be suited by Deputy Minister mares, and that he’d been acquiring them whenever possible. Campbell’s instincts are clearly pretty sharp, as the formula has produced Watch Me Go and Ivanavinalot (also bred by Campbell), while the horse’s other graded scorer, Speak Easy Gal, is out of a mare by Victory Speech, a son of Deputy Minister. Campbell purchased Watch Me Go’s dam, Sabbath Song, for $25,000 at the 2001 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November Adena Springs sales. The unraced mare had previously produced two foals. The first O C’s Legacy, a son of Friendly Lover, failed to place in seven starts, but the second, Sirona Gold, a daughter of Gold Case, proved to be a hard-knocking type, winning six races and $212,550 in Canada and the U.S., but without earning black type. At the time of her purchase, Sabbath Song was carrying Lucky Paco, a son of Lucky Lionel who went on to win three times and place in a Puerto Rican graded contest. After producing a 2003 Golden Missile filly that died before she could start, and missing the following year, Sabbath Song dropped her first West Acre offspring in 2005, a filly named Asgoodasshelooks, who won three times and was third in a turf stakes at Calder. Sabbath Song was barren the next two years before foaling Watch Me Go in 2008. Sabbath Song is a half sister to Eclipse Handicap (gr. III) victress and prolific Canadian stakes winner Blitzer; to Diamonds Galore, a multiple stakes-winning turf sprinter who took third in the Keeneland Nunthorpe Stakes (EngI) on a foray to England; to 2-year-old turf stakes winner Cozy Star; and to winning mare Marfietta, dam of Canadian sprint stakes scorer Marvellous Silver. The second dam, Sirona, who won the Ontario Damsel Stakes and equaled a track-record for 6½ furlongs at Woodbine, was out of Sweet Road, a minor winning daughter of Nearctic (to whom Sabbath Song is inbred 4x3). Sweet Road’s dam, L’Arriviste, set a course record for seven furlongs on turf at Fort Erie. She never produced a winner of note, but daughter Regent’s Honey (by Vice Regent, a grandson of Nearctic and the sire of Deputy Minister), became dam of the stakes winners Mufattish, Regal Dreamer, Three Card Willie, and Shaxi Fortune. Behind this, the female line is a French one, Watch Me Go’s fifth dam being Selina II, an imported daughter of the great sire Sicambre, from a Boussac family that also produced Champion Stakes and Irish Two Thousand Guineas winner Hugh Lupus and outstanding Argentine sire Timor. In addition to being the result of a successful cross, Watch Me Go also has an interesting pedigree pattern here, as West Acre is out of a mare by Honest Pleasure, and Watch Me Go’s second dam is by Irish Stronghold. Both of these horses are products of a cross of the Bold Ruler line over English Derby winner Tulyar, and a similar combination (mostly involving Irish Stronghold’s brother Irish Castle) is found in at least six other stakes winners, including grade I scorer Mi Sueno.
