2008 kickoff preview
Warriors hold high aspirations
further this year by winning their first
district title since 2001.
“When you first start off in August,
everyone has high aspirations,” said
Western Coach Mike Zdebski. “Our
kids are no different. You always go in
with a very positive attitude all the
way up until that first game.”
Western will be part of the new
Kensington Lakes Activities
Association (KLAA) North Division,
where the Warriors will be matched
up with their Walled Lake rivals,
Northern and Central, as well as
Lakeland and Waterford Kettering
and Mott.
“It’s a whole different thing for our
community,” Zdebski said. “I think
the new conference is a good thing
and should be very competitive.”
Most of the Warriors’ experience
will be on offense, with eight starters
returning for 2008.
Leading the way will be junior
Sam Welch, who will start at quarter-
back for a third consecutive season.
“He has the potential to be as
good as any high school quarterback
in the state,” Zdebski said. “He’s
intelligent and a hard worker and
makes the most of every ability that
he has.”
Welch’s main target will be slot
receiver Gilvanni Johnson, playing
offense for the first time.
“He’s a very dynamic player, and
he’s the spark plug on the offense
because he’s going to make some
plays,” Zdebski said.
Team captain David Menoian will
also be a key wideout, while Edison
Vushaj will play tight end.
Anchoring the offensive line will
be Alexander Roji, a 6-5, 270-pound
senior.
“We’re a shotgun spread offense,
like you would see at the University of
Western Coach Mike Zdebski has his Warriors striving to make the kind of individual choices that are in the best interest of the team. He said if his play-
ers can achieve that goal, “the wins will follow.” (Spinal Column Newsweekly photo/Amy K. Lockard)
Florida,” Zdebski said.
On defense, Vushaj looks have
another big season at the linebacker
spot, where he has been dominant.
“He’s taken charge of the team, he’s
very vocal and doing a great job, just as
all of our kids are,” Zdebski said.
Joining him will be senior line-
backer Zack Gattan and returning
senior defensive end Brandon Shafou.
Johnson will also play at corner-
back, his primary position.
“We’re a three-deep team on
defense,” Zdebski said. “We’re a
young squad.”
But when it comes to goals for the
season, Zdebski has a clear perspec-
tive.
“Our goal is for players to make
individual choices that are in the best
interest of the team and if they take
care of that, the wins will follow,” he
said. ❏
— Michael Shelton
alled Lake Western’s football
team has made five straight
playoff appearances, but always
seems to run into the wrong team at
the wrong time in the post-season tour-
nament.
The Warriors’ last playoff win came
in 2005 against North Farmington, but
in the last few years they have seen
their quest for a district title end with
losses to South Lyon, Brother Rice,
Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, Walled Lake
Central, and to Huron Valley Lakeland
last season.
Western finished 2007 as the
Western Lakes Activities Association
(WLAA) Western Division champions,
and the Warriors hope to go one step
Western working to
advance beyond
district playoffs

2008 kickoff preview
Vikings focused on redemption
terback and team captain Cory Davis,
who started two games last season.
“Cory is cool and calm at all times,
and he keeps the team focused and
centered,” Meyer said.
In front of him in the Wing-T
offense will be Ryan Daul, who will
see some time at running back after
playing primarily as an offensive line-
man last season.
“We had a kid named Brian Stolla
who also switched and ran for 1,200
yards in his senior year of 2006, so
we’ve had a lot of success with that
over the last couple years,” Meyer
said. “Ryan is one of the emotional
leaders on the team and is beloved by
his fellow teammates and coaches.
He gives us an uplift during the hard-
est times.”
Ryan Gregory will be another run-
ning back to watch. Meyer said he
brings speed and a lot of athleticism.
Paving the way on the offensive
line will be guard Kyle Sisler, a 6-4,
250-pound, three-year starter that
Meyer describes as the team’s
strongest player, along with tackle
Andrew Lietke.
On the defensive side, the Vikings
will run an eight-man front, led by
two dangerous cornerbacks in junior
and returning starter Ryan Servello
and senior John Lovelace.
Gregory and Daul will also line up
as linebackers along with senior Alex
Michal.
On special teams, Central will rely
on senior kicker Brad Lyons, who is
also the captain of Central’s soccer
team and kicked a 51-yard field goal
last season. He is also a Division I
recruit, being scouted by schools
such as the University of Kentucky.
This will also be the first year for
the Vikings in the new Kensington
Lakes Activities Association (KLAA).
Walled Lake Central Coach Bob Meyer has his Vikings working hard to get back on track after a frustrating 2-7 finish in 2007. He said the team wants
to return to the playoffs and “cause as much damage as we possibly can.” (Spinal Column Newsweekly photo/Amy K. Lockard)
Central is in the North Division, which
sets the stage for what is sure to be
some intense contests against area
rivals.
“I think it’s great for our kids, since
this is the area in which they live and
they meet the other players in the
community,” Meyer said. “They
always talk about which program is
better and now we have the opportuni-
ty to settle this once and for all.”
The Vikings will once again kickoff
their season at Eastern Michigan
University against a tough South Lyon
team in the Big Day Prep Showdown.
“We want to win, represent, and
have a great game to show every-
body that the KLAA is the best foot-
ball conference in the state,” Meyer
said. “Making the playoffs is always
our focus. Once we get in, we want to
cause as much damage as we possi-
bly .”
— Michael Shelton
he 2007 season was a tough pill
to swallow for Walled Lake
Central football players, coach-
es and fans; and the Vikings are focused
on one thing this year: redemption.
Central finished a disappointing 2-7
last season, one year after winning a
district title and finishing 9-3.
“Getting back to our winning tradi-
tion has been the sole focus for our
team,” said Central Head Coach Bob
Meyer. “We made the playoffs the pre-
vious two years and thought we had
everything going in the right direction
and somewhere along the lines, focus
was lost (in 2007). But not anymore.
We’re working hard to get it back.”
Leading the Vikings’ charge is quar-
Central’s main goal
is returning to its
winning tradition

New era begins for Northern
The Knights of Walled Lake Northern are learning that new Head Coach Brett Moore expects all the little things to
be done right. Moore said his players have been receptive to what he wants from them. (Spinal Column Newsweekly
photo/Amy K. Lockard)
he Brett Moore era has officially
begun at Walled Lake Northern.
After coaching for the past eight
years at Lapeer East, Clio and
Memphis, Moore will now lead the
Knights and looks to start a winning tra-
dition.
“We are basically starting from
ground zero,” he said. “There’s a motto I
use: ‘You crawl before you walk, you
walk before you jog, and you jog before
you sprint,’ and that’s what we’re going
to do.”
Northern’s program began in 2003,
and its best season came in 2005 with a
5-4 record. But, the Knights were win-
less last season and their former head
coach, Mike Fras, resigned at the end of
the year for personal reasons after being
the head coach since the inception of the
program.
Now, Moore has the chance to mold
the Knights with his own vision.
“There’s little battles to fight,” he
said. “Everywhere I’ve ever gone I’ve
had to build, and so far they’ve been
really receptive to what I want and
they’re learning what I expect out of
them.
“I expect to go hard all the time and
jog on and off the practice field — the lit-
tle things,” Moore added. “I expect the
little things to be done right. That’s what
we’re stressing.”
According to Moore, his team will
run a spread offense 100 percent out of
the shotgun, with multiple formations.
At press time there was an ongoing
battle for the quarterback position
between juniors Adam Chuchla and
Jason Tucker, and Moore said there was
no clear-cut starter.
The Knights also have a strong group
of running backs made up of Terrell
Goode, Matt Janas, Aaron Kapeluch and
Jasper Brown.
“Everyone is learning as we’re
going,” Moore said.
On the defensive side, the Knights
will run a 4-4/4-3 hybrid and bring stunts
from different angles to hopefully create
some turnovers, according to Moore.
The defensive line will be led by line-
backers Joey Ventimiglia and Zach
Leinonen.
Goode will also play cornerback,
along with Bo Brown, while junior Jake
Hillenberg is expected to step up as a
defensive tackle.
Another bonus for Moore is that the
Knights will be competing in the new
Kensington Lakes Activities Association

bus trip in the conference is the

think it’s a great opportunity.”
He said he’s also excited about the
community’s support for his team.
“The parents are very supportive,
and they do whatever it takes to get
the job done,” he said.
“We want to get better every week,”
Moore said. “I’m not going to put any-

Hill takes over Mavericks’ reins
tion and build on it if possible.”
Fox resigned at the end of last sea-
son after eight years, and Hill was
hired as head coach after working as
an assistant during Fox’s tenure.
Hill has the task of turning around
a Milford team that was 4-5 last sea-
son following a two-year period in
which it went 19-5 and won two dis-
trict titles and the 2006 Kensington
Valley Conference (KVC) crown.
“It will take kids having great
team chemistry, working and playing
hard for each other and believing in
the things that we’re doing,” he said.
“If they keep coming together, we
have the possibility of success in front
of us.”
Milford’s main catalyst will be sen-
ior Kyle Podvin, the 2007 KVC special
teams player of the year. He has been
a two-way starter for the last three
years at running back and corner-
back, as well as Milford’s primary
kick returner.
The offensive line will be headed
up by senior guard Jake Thompson
(6-feet, 245 pounds), and linemen
David Owens (senior), James Cote
(junior) and Rocky Mikulec (senior).
They will be protecting senior
quarterback Steve Buglione. His
main target will be senior receiver
Carter Fox, who stands at 6-3.
“We’re a shotgun spread-option
offense,” Hill said. “We spread it out,
we run the ball, we run some options
and we throw some play-action in and
go from there.”
On the defensive squad, playing
outside linebacker will be seniors
Sam Darish and Patrick Niebauer.
They will be joined by senior inside
linebackers Grant VandenBussche
and Joe Grabowski. Podvin will also

“Our defense is an eight-man front

Although the Mavericks are in a
new league this year, there are famil-
iar foes to face, including Brighton,
Hartland and Pinckney. The main
highlight of the schedule is the regu-
lar season finale against bitter rival
Huron Valley Lakeland.
Hill said the coaching transition
has been relatively smooth.
“The kids understand what’s
expected of them and I’ve been very
up front about what I expect,” he said.
“We want our kids to give us their best
effort, compete on and off the field, do
the right thing and be accountable for
their actions. With that we want to
continue the tradition of Milford foot-
ball and pass the torch.” ❏

2008 kickoff preview
Eagles hungry for more success
Association (KLAA) conference and
go further in the playoffs.
“We’re looking forward to (the
KLAA) because all those schools have
great traditions and geographically it
makes sense, where you’re now com-
peting with people that are within a
closer proximity to your school so you
can have more rivalries,” Maltese
said.
The Eagles have seven returning
starters on the 2008 offensive squad,
led by three-year starting quarter-
back Blake Heiman. He passed for
1,340 yards and 15 touchdowns in
2007.
“I believe he’s one of the better
football players in Oakland County,”
Maltese said.
Protecting him on the offensive
line will be Dan Schroeter, a 6-4, 235-
pound senior lineman, and senior
guard Josh Mulligan.
Carrying the rock will be senior
wingback Matt Rall and junior half-
back Jacob Rohde.
“Both have shifty moves and are
very quick,” Maltese said.
Heiman’s main target will be Clint
Penokie, who had 30 receptions for
511 yards and eight touchdowns last
season. He’ll also play cornerback.
According to Maltese, Penokie has a
great pair of hands and speed.
“Our offense operates out of the
Wing-T base and we distribute the ball
equally to our running backs and
quarterback and try to establish the
play-action,” Maltese said.
The defensive line will have six
returning starters, and will be
anchored by Lee Lopez, a 6-3, 230-
pound senior end who had nine sacks
last year.
Also returning are senior inside
linebackers Max Hill and Josh
Mulligan, who combined for 131 tack-
les during the 2007 season.
Huron Valley Lakeland emerged from 13 straight losing seasons to go 6-4 in 2006 and 8-3 in 2007, a run that featured the team’s first playoff victory
since 1982. Coach John Maltese plans to distribute the ball equally under the Wing-T offensive scheme. (Spinal Column Newsweekly photo/Amy K.
Lockard)
Joining the team at outside line-
backer will be Anthony Glass, a senior
transfer student from Garden City.
Before starting KLAA play, the
Eagles have two tough early games,
including the home opener against
Grand Blanc and a trip to Canton.
“I think it’s a very demanding
schedule,” Maltese said. “Grand
Blanc is one of the largest schools in
Michigan so they have a large talent
pool to pull from, and we’re not look-
ing past that game. I know Canton has
been a powerhouse for the last 12
years.”
Maltese said he hopes this is the
year that Lakeland establishes itself
as one of the top teams in the area.
“I’d like to see them continue what
they’ve built upon the last couple
years, and it all starts with taking one
practice and one game at a time,” he
said. ❏

fter posting two consecutive,
impressive winning seasons, it
appears Huron Valley Lake-
land’s varsity football program has
turned the corner.
“It all starts with a great bunch of
seniors and I think we now have that
leadership,” said Lakeland Coach John
Maltese. “They want it more and they
understand it better.”
After 13 years of sub-.500 records,
the Eagles broke through in 2006 with
a 6-4 record and followed that up in
2007 by going 8-3 and posting the
school’s first playoff win since 1982.
Now, Lakeland looks to take the
next step by winning a league title in
the new Kensington Lakes Activities

2008 kickoff preview
Opportunities excite Captains
to start fresh this year by moving
from the Oakland Activities
Association (OAA) to the new
Kensington Lakes Activities
Association (KLAA) North Division.
There, Kettering will face not only
arch-rival Waterford Mott, but all
three Walled Lake schools and Huron
Valley Lakeland.
“We’re real excited to be in this
league,” Topie said. “There’s good
football and tradition there. The
schools are much closer and there
are opportunities to create rivalries
that will last a long time.”
On offense, the Captains have
eight starters returning, led by senior
quarterback and team captain Kevin
Truitt, who threw for 1,200 yards and
11 touchdowns while starting all nine
games last season.
“Kevin is 6-7, 235 pounds and can
throw the ball,” Topie said.
Truitt will be protected by four
returning starters on the offensive
line: seniors Nick Bohon, Tyler Wade
and John West, and junior Tyler
Bedgood.
“They anchor down a pretty big
offensive line. I think they average
275 pounds between the four of
them,” Topie said.
Running back duties will be split
between seniors Chris Smith and
Josh Reyes and juniors Brandon
Clingan and Ryan Dingman.
Topie added that he’s looking to fill
some holes at the wide receiver slots.
“Our offense is very balanced and
our line is going to allow us to run the
ball very effectively,” he said.

led by linebackers Tyler Wale and
Josh Blowers, along with Derrick
Vickery and Reyes at defensive back.
Smith will also see action as a
defensive lineman, while junior Vince
Murdock is expected to step up at
linebacker.
“We run a very aggressive attack-
ing style defense, with lots of move-
ment and action up front,” Topie said.
“We definitely rely on speed and ath-
leticism over size.”
With the tools in place, the
Captains look to chart a new course
and reach the promised land in 2008,
according to Topie.
“We want to compete for the
league championship, get in the play-
offs, and have a lot of fun,” he said. ❏

aterford Kettering rebounded
from a winless 2006 season with
a 4-5 record last year. Now the
Captains want to improve on that by
simply not thinking about it.
“We were pretty close (to a winning
record) last year and we constantly
improved,” said Kettering Coach Matt
Topie. “I think we’ve got a good group.
We’re just looking to have fun and
improve on a daily basis. Our No. 1
concern isn’t what our record is going
to be. We’re having fun, and as a result
of that I think we’ll be successful.”

enced) kids on defense, so our expec-
tations are higher to continue that
winning we’ve done the past two
years, and we’re excited about the
new league.”
Before 2006, Mott had posted only
three winning seasons in 15 previous
years.
Now in his twelfth year, Schmidt
and his Corsairs are finally starting
to see the light at the end of the tun-
nel.
The Corsairs’ offense will be
anchored by senior running back
Marc Pressley, a three-year starter
who rushed for about 650 yards and
seven touchdowns last season,
according to Schmidt.
Also returning is senior quarter-
back Tyler Bush, who started nine of
the Corsairs’ 10 games last season
and scored seven touchdowns.
“He’s an experienced, smart ath-
lete who makes good choices when on
offense,” Schmidt said.
Bush’s main target at the wide
receiver position will be senior Tony
Romero, while the offensive line will
be helmed by senior center Ben
Lewis and linemen Kyle Kittle and
Kyle Pearson.
“We’re a triple-option offense. We
kind of hunk and chunk it and we
have the capability of breaking the
long runs and passes,” Schmidt said.
On defense, junior Jeff Hudson
will once again start at inside line-
backer, while junior Jake Wardach
will line up as the outside linebacker.
Pearson will also see time at line-
backer and Pressley will be the pri-
mary cornerback.
Also expected to step up on
defense will be junior Mike Kellam at
cornerback and junior safety Darren
Goodman.

speed on defense,” Schmidt said. “We

use a pressure-8 defense. We do a lot
of blitzing and stunting.”
Mott kicks off the season with a
couple of tough KLAA crossover con-
tests on the road against Westland
John Glenn and Wayne Memorial.
The Corsairs then will face all
three Walled Lake schools, Huron
Valley Lakeland and arch-rival
Waterford Kettering before wrapping
up the regular season against Grand
Blanc.
“I think it’s going to be a tough
schedule up front, and I don’t see too
many breaks,” Schmidt said.
The Corsairs also have been
shutout the last two years in the first
game of the state playoffs, something
they’re looking to change this season.
“We always want to win the league
championship and get into the play-
offs,” Schmidt said. “That’s always our
front-running goal.” ❏

ver the past couple years,
Waterford Mott’s football pro-
gram has transformed medioc-
rity into consistency. The Corsairs not
only clinched their second straight
winning season (7-3) and a playoff
berth in 2007, but also a share of the
Oakland Activities Association (OAA)
Blue Division championship.
As Mott moves from the OAA to the
Kensington Lakes Activities
Association (KLAA), the Corsairs
intend to firmly establish themselves
as one of the top teams in the area.

Our Lady begins ‘reloading’
Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes Coach Mike Boyd has less than a handful of players returning on both the offen-
sive and defensive squads. He said the Lakers’ bevy of new players will be expected to perform to the best of their
ability and duplicate what their predecessors have achieved. (Spinal Column Newsweekly photo/Amy K. Lockard)
fter finishing 9-3 and winning its
sixth straight district title last
year, Our Lady of the Lakes
Coach Mike Boyd knows his 2008 team
will be hard-pressed to match last sea-
son’s achievements.
“If we could duplicate last year, it
would be a great success,” he said.
“We’re predominately freshmen and
sophomores this year. We lack a whole lot
of experience, size, and speed that we’ve
had in the past. We’re not in a rebuilding,
but a reloading type of situation.”
However, Boyd is also not one for
excuses.
“We have a whole lot of expectations
around here,” he said. “We’ve been
spoiled by success, so we don’t want to
do any worse. Our kids are expected to
perform to the best of their ability and
duplicate what the kids have done in
past years.”
Boyd looks to give the Lakers a
chance in the Catholic League race by
switching things up, starting with his
quarterback. Splitting time under cen-
ter will be sophomore Mike Sullivan and
senior L.J. Stolarski, depending on cer-
tain game situations.
Stolarski will also play mostly at run-
ning back.
Junior Derek Sant, who was the
starting quarterback at the beginning of
the 2007 season, will switch to the wide
receiver position.
On the offensive line, junior Nick
Burnham will be one of the few return-
ing offensive lineman, while Eli Roque
will be the starting center.
On defense, junior John Kroll will
switch from the offensive line to line-
backer, while senior Jamie DiDio
returns at cornerback.
Sophomore Mason Roy is expected
to step up in the secondary, and junior
Adam Beans looks to play both line-
backer and tight end.
“We only have two or three guys
each returning on the offense and
defensive side,” Boyd said.
The Lakers will face some tough
Catholic League competition, including
Allen Park Cabrini and Royal Oak
Shrine, the only two teams to beat Our
Lady in the regular season last year.
But, Our Lady will begin the year
with an annual trip to Chicago to take
on Lutheran South. It’s a tradition that
began in 2001 and the Lakers have won
all seven meetings.
“It’s a good trip for the parents and
ballplayers, and it becomes a social-type
of event,” Boyd said. “It puts the

Lakers seeking redemption
“We couldn’t get the athletes out
here before, but now we have 20 extra
kids. Even the whole basketball team
is out here,” Jamie said.
The Lakers’ main offensive weapon
will be senior running back Kevin
Davis, who participated in the
University of Michigan football camp
with Wolverines Coach Rich Rodriguez
over the summer and won the camp’s
Most Valuable Running Back Award.
“Kevin is one of the fastest runners
in high school in the state of
Michigan,” Jamie said. “He runs a 10.5
in the 100 and a 4.32 in the 40.”
Taking the snaps will be junior
quarterback Ryan Christenson, who
will be looking to hook up with Chris
Hurst, a 6-5 senior wide receiver.
“Chris is one of those Randy Moss
jump-ball kids,” Jamie said. “When we
get inside the 20 or 30-yard line, we
pretty much feel like we should score
because it’s a mismatch.”
Juniors Cameron Fields and Aaron
White will come up from the undefeat-
ed 2007 JV squad and are expected to
be dangerous receivers, as well.
“We run a spread offense, 4-wide
set,” Jamie said. “It’s like you pick
your poison.”
On special teams, the Lakers have
a sure-fire kicker in Rami Yousif, who
was 23-for-23 on extra points last sea-
son — a school record — and 3-for-5 on
field goals.
The defense is also loaded with tal-
ent, including senior cornerback A.J.
Bolden, who stands 6-1 and had five
interceptions last season. “We go on
different web sites and he’s listed as one
of the top 75 players in the state,” Jamie
said. “We’re proud to have him as a fig-
urehead for our program.”
An intimidating presence for oppo-
nents will be senior nose tackle
West Bloomfield’s returning players remember the sting of missing the 2007 playoffs after a season-ending loss to Lake Orion, and don’t want to be in
that position again. The Lakers will get another crack at Lake Orion in the second week of the 2008 season. (Spinal Column Newsweekly photo/Amy K.
Lockard)
Marcus Judon, who is listed at 6-4 and
330 pounds.
“On defense, nobody can move
him,” Jamie said. “He’s so quick off the
ball for his size that he demands a dou-
ble team. He’s a monster.”
Starting at middle linebacker will be
senior Sam Ockwell, whom Jamie calls
an extension of the coaching staff.
Also expected to contribute will be
senior strong safety Justin Parker, the
Lakers’ leading tackler from last year.
West Bloomfield faces another
tough schedule against Oakland
Activities Association (OAA) Red
Division foes, including a rematch with
Lake Orion in Week 2; and the Lakers
are looking to seize the moment.
“Our seniors are really excited
about redemption,” Jamie said. “We
don’t view our schedule as anything
but going to the playoffs. ❏
— Michael Shelton
fter finishing 5-4 last year and
just missing the playoffs under
first-year head coach Jim
Thomas, it appears the sky is the limit
for the West Bloomfield Lakers in 2008.
“Our theme this year is turn it up a
notch,” said Assistant Coach Jamie
Thomas, Jim’s son. “This is our year. If
we’re going to do it, it’s going to be this
year. We have about seven or eight
starters each returning on offense and
defense and they know the feeling of
that loss against Lake Orion in the final
game. We don’t want to be in that posi-
tion again.”
Following a string of sub-.500 sea-
sons, last season’s success has attract-
ed new players to the program.

Eaglets have shot at revenge
heartbreaking, 49-36 defeat.
Ironically, East Grand Rapids is
where St. Mary’s will open the season
on Aug. 29.
“We had that set up a month
before we even got to the (2007) final
because they were looking for a first
game (in 2008),” Porritt said. “We’re
going to play them the next two years.
There’s a lot of hype already.”
The Eaglets’ 2008 offense will be
led by junior quarterback Robert
Bolden, who threw for 907 yards and
seven touchdowns last season.
“He’s already a great quarterback
and he’s just going to get better,”
Porritt said.
Pounding the rock through defens-
es will be senior running back Sam
Fioroni, who rushed for 473 yards and
nine touchdowns last season.
Senior Dion Sims, the Eaglets’
leading receiver in 2007, will also

and three touchdowns last year, while
senior Justin Semmes will be counted
on at fullback.
Senior Suave Lavallis will be the
team’s primary kickoff and punt
returner, after amassing a total of 684
yards on returns and scoring two
touchdowns last season.
Paving the way will be an offensive
line with only one returning starter,
senior tackle Christian Brandt.
“That’s a little scary going into the
first game, but they mature pretty
fast and by the end of the season they
should be pretty good,” Porritt said.
“We have a little bit of a spread
offense in the shotgun, then we run
what we call our Ace offense with
double wings, and we run a power
game off of that.”
On the defensive side, senior
James Huddleston is expected to
start at defensive end and make a big
impact, according to Porritt.
There’s already been a lot of hype about the season-opening rematch between St. Mary’s and defending Division 3 state champion East Grand Rapids,
according to St. Mary’s Coach George Porritt. The Eaglets battled East Grand Rapids in the 2007 state finals, losing after five overtime sessions. (Spinal

Seniors Devon Shadwick and
De’Andre Perkins will be the primary
defensive tackles.
“We have a lot of kids coming back
on defense so we hope that they will
jump start us and keep us in ball-
games and give us a chance to win,”
Porritt said. “We play a lot of hawk,
and we’ve got a blitz package off that.
Our 4-4 defense is more of an attack
style.”
With a schedule that includes
Detroit Catholic Central, Brother Rice
and Davison, the Eaglets will be put to
the test but they believe they are up
for the challenge.
“Our goal is always the state cham-
pionship, but to win the Catholic
League is important because we know
we play in such a strong league,”
Porritt said. “We probably put a lot of
pressure on ourselves to obtain those
goals.” ❏
