Where do they live? Prices must be really different where I am. Here, that fridge and stove would be minimum, 800 each. I recently had granite counter tops done. I picked the least expensive color, have less counter top than them. I called 12 places and had written estimates from 6 and still paid 2200. Cabinets and floors we priced out also. Even doing all the work, they got a deal unheard of in my area!!! I believe she got great deals at Home Goods but you should tell us where she got her materials for the major items. Sorry i can't buy the under 5,000 claim. :-(

It's all Ikea... cabinets, appliances.. even those barstools. and the floor looks vinyl. also the granite isn't a seamless L so they most likely used remnant pieces.

Curious. How can you tell from these pics that the granite isn't a seamless L?

you can see the seam on a 45 degree angle in the third picture from the bottom. Look under the blue tray.

I agree. That is impossible. I just used the same Ikea cabinets and actually they are real wood and the most expensive that Ikea sells. My kitchen cost about 6500 on just Ikea alone with a 20% discount. I even have the same handles and they are 7 bucks a pair. No not the thrifty ones that Ikea sells in bundles for 2.99 for 6. My husband works for Sears and we saved money with his discount and

for 6. My husband works for Sears and we saved money with his discount and still spent 5k just on our appliances ALONE. Then they would have needed a dumpster for the reno and that is 300, there are electrical updates (+1000) , plumbing updates and dishwasher and disposal and sink installs (+500) ... The granite we had was 2700 and i shopped around too. I hate to say but this article is a bit of a sham. Oh but she put up a cheap wood blind herself. Oooooo BTW the blind is kind of ugly.

I agree with Jimmy I have watched enough HGTV and blogs to know Ikea is the least expensive for great products and you must do your homework for remnants on all items even granite countertops. I will be doing the same thing upgrading my kitchen in a few years, right now it's okay remodeled in 2003 by the previous owner, not my style but I'm collecting all the data now and this blog about Cyndi's remodel is great. Thank you so much for sharing!

It is too plain! If you are putting that kind of money into a kitchen add more and make it look like attachment below!

Y ou are comparing apples to caviar. The woman in the story updated her whole kitchen, including appliances, for under $5000. The kitchen you posted would cost 40-50 grand. Just the fridge is well over $2000 and the granite at least

cost 40-50 grand. Just the fridge is well over $2000 and the granite at least $5000. Y our post is not helpful to those on a budget. The budget kitchen shown is not plain, it is clean and cheerful and showcases the owner's personality. The kitchen you posted has become ubiquitous and lacks personality and creativity.

Y ou see plain, I see unique and personal. What you posted is cookie-cutter kitchen 101 and cost a tremendous amount more.

I had my kitchen and floors redone in late 2012. I had a leak under the sink, and insurance paid for some of the work. The cabinets, some of the painting and some other work was covered. We upgraded the countertops from the formica which was covered to granite. Our contractor upgraded our cabinets at no charge and we changed the floors from small tile with big grout lines to big porcelain tiles with very thin grout lines. We had a tumbled marble backsplash installed which was done in subway tile style, and while we were at it we replaced the carpet in the living/dining rooms with hardwood. They also made the soffets much smaller which gave me larger cabinets and also room around the fridge to fit a larger model next time we upgrade it.

While I think it looks great, they could have saved even more money by refacing the original cabinets themselves. My cabinets were similar. I used a saw to cut lines and added 1/4 MDF in 2" widths to give them a beadboard look. With updated hardware and paint, I was in to it about $200. The countertops were $675. The stove and micro were $100 (bought from a neigbor who just moved in and wanted a new stove). Because I made the U shape into an L, I had to repair/replace some of the flooring ($80). Diswasher was $300 if I remember correctly. Sink and faucet were $200. Tile backsplash - $200. Kept the fridge. With misc odds and ends, it probably ended up being about $1800-$1900 for a very similar looking kitchen.

Have you ever lived with granite countertops? One large #10 can of peaches falls out of the cabinet and you are done. I was gone one day when a plumbing company did a faucet repair. A week later I discovered a pit in the surface, probably from their wrenches. I find it ludicrous that 20-yr.-olds now expect granite.
