The West Kootenay Permaculture Co-op (WKPC) is a
community based cooperative working to build a healthy
and resilient region through collaboration, education,
media and net positive initiatives. We are the folks behind
Kootenay Food, The Homesteading 101 workshop series
and the founders of the 3rd annual Farm Food Fork
conference.

grow our local food and farming economies by connecting eater to growers and by building communications
between stakeholders invested in our region’s foodshed.

Valley that will serve the needs of
our residents. The Food Centre
will become: a catalyst for driving a food economy; a space for
community to gather and thrive
together; a place for good food;
and an agritourism epicentre.

It’s that time of year again, people are cleaning out closets, garages and sheds as spring comes to the West Kootenay. The Brent Kennedy PAC is inviting all spring cleaners
to our annual Children’s Market fundraiser on Saturday,
April 16, from 9 am to 12 noon, 1092 Highway 6, Crescent Valley.
Families gather in our school gym and bring all their
gently used or new family related items and sell them in
a huge garage sale style gathering. We open the doors to
the community to browse and purchase items from infant
gear and toys, to bigger kid toys, books, clothes, bikes
and scooters, sports equipment, camping gear and even
outdoor play structures. It’s reducing, reusing and recycling in a fine form. We are also inviting family friendly
home businesses to join in the event, giving them a terrific opportunity to showcase their wares and allow the
community to support local home businesses.
We have a few tables left in the market and would love
to have new faces fill those spots. Every space is $10 and
you are welcome to have as many spaces as you like. Each
space comes with a six foot banquet style table and two
chairs. We can arrange floor space for anyone with larger
items.
Looking for some great deals? Come on down and do
some shopping. Doors open at 9 am sharp, absolutely
no early birds and there is always a line up to start the
day. Admission to the market is $2 for anyone over 12
years old. Bring your reusable bags to hold your treasures.
There will also be a donation box for non perishable food

Boots In The Koots

Firefighters in Robson continue to flex their fundraising muscles by filling their boots for Muscular Dystrophy
Canada. The volunteer fire department raised a whopping
$6517 for the organization on Saturday, March 19.
“I’m so proud of our amazing group,” said Jeff Grant, Chief
of the Robson Volunteer Fire Department. “For a community of our size to create results like we did is nothing short
of incredible. Not only did it feel good doing it, but we continued to build on what are truly outstanding benchmarks.”
In 2014, the department raised $6200, a feat which garnered the team the Up and Coming Fire Hall of the Year
Award at Muscular Dystrophy Canada’s annual conference.
The following year the team surpassed that amount by
raising $6400. “From executing calls like the professionals
we are, to taking training deadly serious, to recognizing
our little community of Robson, we can make a big difference if we just decide to do it,” said Grant.
Muscular Dystrophy is a hereditary condition that leads
to the progressive weakening and loss of muscles. For

A Parcel Tax Roll Review Panel has been appointed to deal
with Parcel Tax Rolls pursuant to waterworks improvements and specified area sanitary sewer. The panel shall
hear from property owner(s) and may review and correct

Once again it is time to ask for nominations for Kaslo
Citizen of the Year for 2016. This award is sponsored
by the Kaslo & Area Chamber of Commerce. It is the
Chamber’s way of saying Thank you to good neighbours
for making life better for all of us.
In making a nomination, keep in mind a few simple
guidelines:
1. Recognition should have nothing to do with the
nominee’s occupation.
2. We look for nominees who quietly and
inconspicuously do good deeds for the people
in the community, whether it is involvement in
community organizations, or helping a neighbour
weed the garden. When evaluating the nominations,
thoughtful consideration is given to those whose
good deeds are not necessarily well known.
3. Deadline for submissions is April 15, 2016.
These awards have been presented annually, by the
Chamber of Commerce, since 1986. They were presented

Bill Bourne On Tour

Some great folk music is headed for Kaslo with the
return of Juno award winner, Bill Bourne. Bill will be playing with special guest, Alan Kirk, at the Langham Cultural
Centre, at 7:30 pm on Tuesday April 19.
Known for his electrifying solo performances, Bill has
also participated in some great collaborations with Alan
MacLeod, Lester Quitzau and others. A veteran of the
international blues and roots music scene, life on the road
is reflected in Bill’s music – powerful rhythms and soulful songs, steeped in blues, world beat, cajun, celtic, latin,
funk, poetry and more.
Bill Bourne was raised in a musical family in rural
Alberta. His parents played dance music in community
halls. When he was two years old, he was known to sleep
behind the piano at country dances. The love of nature
and music and of people gathering for celebration has
always been with him.
Enjoying the process of collaboration, Bourne is opening with Nelson resident Alan Kirk who has played
numerous venues and festivals in BC and beyond. He
also performs with the local band Lift, playing in the US,
Canada, New Zealand and Europe. Kirk is the founder of
Phonic Records, a label and publisher devoted to promoting musical talent in the West and East Kootenay region.

The Slocan Valley

The Slocan Community Library’s wants to brighten up
by shining its newly installed energy-efficient lighting on
the Slocan Valley and its local photographers.
The library is looking for 16 photos, preferably in colour,
of landscape or nature and set in the Slocan Valley. The
photos will be displayed in a revolving exhibit in the library
and, possibly, in shared areas of the Wellness Centre.
This is a fame-only opportunity. Photographers will be
asked to let the library print one copy of each photograph
chosen for the exhibit. The library will pay the cost of
printing, matting (if needed) and framing. The photos, to
be displayed in 24˝ by 36˝ frames, need to be of high resolution, so that when enlarged they will be at least 300 dpi.
A card by each photo will note the photographer’s name.
